Boot up Windoze normally, go to Start then Run, and type in the command compmgmt.msc (without the parentheses) and it will mount a hidden utility that would be MS's version of Disk Utility. There the offending 60Gig drive will be seen and able to be re-formatted. Hope this helps. Re: Scanner software works in 10.3 but not 10.4--how come?
I'll check out the SCSI card driver update Kris, thanks. Don't know if that will fix the software, though. Got my fingers crossed. I'll report back when I try it, in a day or so. Too busy to fool with it just at the moment. Thanks Brian, I did buy VueScan, and it will run the scanner, all right, but very slowly, and with a clunky interface. The scanner works so slowly under VueScan that I sometimes think it didn't get a command, it just sits there idle for so long, and I'm about to give up when it finally starts to do something. And VueScan only has a fraction of the controls that the original Minolta software does, for correction of color, gamma, contrast, etc. It's loaded with all sorts of adjustment windows, sliders, and graphs. Best of all, the software runs the scanner really fast compared to VueScan. It responds to commands instantly. I'd sure like to get that Minolta software working in 10.4. John, I'm glad to see others still using these fine Dimage scanners. Do you have any idea where to get replacement lamps for them? They surely can't last forever, and if the lamps can't be bought anymore, there goes the scanner, to the junk pile. I've been worried about that. Minolta has bit the dust, and is out of the camera and scanner business. There is no more support. But surely there are enough of these Minoltas still in use for some manufacturer to stock bulbs for them, wouldn't you think? If you know of any source, please let me know. Re: File Managent Woes
Thanks to Everyone! You're input is very welcome and I'm sincerely grateful :-). I wanted to update what I've done since putting up my original posting. My Original Challenges are Prolific File Duplicates and Setting Up A Filing System (Mainly to ride herd on my photos). Equipment recap: G4 Mini/1g/1.25mhz/40g • 320gig My Book External / 40g 250g partitions • 120gig External (Offline Backup of the Mini ) • External DVD Burner The first 'baseline' decision was to commit to Adobe Lightroom. My second decision was to 'Brute Force' my way through finding 'Duplicates'. I have an inordinate amount of time to fill up anyway. The third was to use the 40gig partition exclusively for Photo Files. I did a fresh clone of the internal drive, copied -essentially- all non-application non-system files to the 250gig partition, and punted large swaths of those files to the trash. I freed up almost half the drive! :-) I copied the 40gig partition's contents to the 250 - After moving my beloved 'Busters 'Bones -n- 'CSI's to Opticals (where they actually ought to have been). I am now in the process of comparing Folders on the 250 using the Find command (set to search only the 250) and trashing the dupes I find (I compare file counts and total folder megabytes to make sure things match). I've tossed about 40gig's of dupes at this point. Once I've narrowed my Dupes via this method, I'll turn to Lightroom to import what's left and weed out the duplicate image files that way. I have lightroom set to 'copy' the originals to organized folders on my 40gig partition. I'll then use that program to weed out the crappy images and screw-ups, bring an order to the library by making collections and sub collections of images, Archive the keepers, then clear out space on the 250. I have a 40gig drive floating around I can use to backup the 40gig partition of the 320 My Book External onto. SuperDuper to the rescue :-). OH! I do know the difference between an archive and backup - I was only keeping 'partial backups' because I didn't know for sure what was archived or even what pictures were on the backups with total certainty. My goal is to have some certainty in my archiving and organization to 'KNOW' my next 'Clone' isn't going to write over a one of a kind file or photo. Anyway, I have hacked together a 'start' to my organizational process. I don't have a 'global' plan for archiving and organization set yet, but I'm thinking hard on it. The others mentioned deal with flash video files (.flv) like those on YouTube. My favorite too for those is cosmopod, a Safari Plugin. Perian also lets you deal with .flv files in QT. Massively useful tool, turns QT pro into a major conversion tool. -- Bruce Johnson U of Az College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions don't have opinions, merely customs --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Opinions on defunct G4 sawtooth
G'day I just been to my neighbours house, where a tricked out G4 Sawtooth is playing up. The computer seems to boot, and the monitor light comes on (green) after a few seconds, but there's no picture. Would it be the radeon 7000 GC, or the monitor?
