I have DIMAGE SCAN DUAL III, Mac Version 1.0.0 that works well on my
QuickSilver (2002) w/ OS 10.4.11. My scanner is USB ported which may
account for the difference. As I'm sure, you no doubt already know,
Minolta sold out to Sony and you can go to the Sony site for info,
although very little of it. Not much help I guess.

Hi Glen,
Yes, formatting an additional drive on a PC is pretty goofy; it is not hard
once you know where to go, but even a modest search of format hard drive
at the Microsoft website gives a one a very quick trip to the Twilight Zone
- it's like MS does not want a novice to know this.

Boot up Windoze normally, go to Start then Run, and type in the command
compmgmt.msc (without the parentheses) and it will mount a hidden utility
that would be MS's version of Disk Utility. There the offending 60Gig drive
will be seen and able to be re-formatted.

Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Dana

Re: Scanner software works in 10.3 but not 10.4--how come?

2008-10-15 Thread Tom

I'll check out the SCSI card driver update Kris, thanks. Don't know if
that will fix the software, though. Got my fingers crossed. I'll
report back when I try it, in a day or so. Too busy to fool with it
just at the moment.

Thanks Brian, I did buy VueScan, and it will run the scanner, all
right, but very slowly, and with a clunky interface. The scanner works
so slowly under VueScan that I sometimes think it didn't get a
command, it just sits there idle for so long, and I'm about to give up
when it finally starts to do something. And VueScan only has a
fraction of the controls that the original Minolta software does, for
correction of color, gamma, contrast, etc. It's loaded with all sorts
of adjustment windows, sliders, and graphs. Best of all, the software
runs the scanner really fast compared to VueScan. It responds to
commands instantly. I'd sure like to get that Minolta software working
in 10.4.

John, I'm glad to see others still using these fine Dimage scanners.
Do you have any idea where to get replacement lamps for them? They
surely can't last forever, and if the lamps can't be bought anymore,
there goes the scanner, to the junk pile. I've been worried about
that. Minolta has bit the dust, and is out of the camera and scanner
business. There is no more support. But surely there are enough of
these Minoltas still in use for some manufacturer to stock bulbs for
them, wouldn't you think? If you know of any source, please let me
know.

Thanks to all for the help!

Tom, no idea concerning replacement lamps unless you could identify
the original lamp manufacturer. I've scanned over six thousand slides
with mine and still have another three thousand to go. Works
flawlessly. If you are interested I would be happy to let you use
mine when I'm done with my slides. My first SLR was a Minolta and I
was surprised and saddened when they went out of business. I've
noticed a number of Minolta scanners on e-bay and at reasonable
prices. I got mine on the LEM swap list and have been very pleased
with it. Good luck.

Re: File Managent Woes

2008-10-15 Thread aussieshepsrock

Thanks to Everyone!
You're input is very welcome and I'm sincerely grateful :-).
I wanted to update what I've done since putting up my original
posting.

My Original Challenges are Prolific File Duplicates and Setting Up A
Filing System (Mainly to ride herd on my photos).

Equipment recap:
G4 Mini/1g/1.25mhz/40g • 320gig My Book External / 40g 250g
partitions • 120gig External (Offline Backup of the Mini ) • External
DVD Burner

The first 'baseline' decision was to commit to Adobe Lightroom.

My second decision was to 'Brute Force' my way through finding
'Duplicates'. I have an inordinate amount of time to fill up anyway.

The third was to use the 40gig partition exclusively for Photo Files.

I did a fresh clone of the internal drive, copied -essentially- all
non-application non-system files to the 250gig partition, and punted
large swaths of those files to the trash. I freed up almost half the
drive! :-)

I copied the 40gig partition's contents to the 250 - After moving my
beloved 'Busters 'Bones -n- 'CSI's to Opticals (where they actually
ought to have been).

I am now in the process of comparing Folders on the 250 using the Find
command (set to search only the 250) and trashing the dupes I find (I
compare file counts and total folder megabytes to make sure things
match). I've tossed about 40gig's of dupes at this point.

Once I've narrowed my Dupes via this method, I'll turn to Lightroom to
import what's left and weed out the duplicate image files that way. I
have lightroom set to 'copy' the originals to organized folders on my
40gig partition. I'll then use that program to weed out the crappy
images and screw-ups, bring an order to the library by making
collections and sub collections of images, Archive the keepers, then
clear out space on the 250.

I have a 40gig drive floating around I can use to backup the 40gig
partition of the 320 My Book External onto. SuperDuper to the
rescue :-).

OH! I do know the difference between an archive and backup - I was
only keeping 'partial backups' because I didn't know for sure what was
archived or even what pictures were on the backups with total
certainty. My goal is to have some certainty in my archiving and
organization to 'KNOW' my next 'Clone' isn't going to write over a one
of a kind file or photo.

Anyway, I have hacked together a 'start' to my organizational process.
I don't have a 'global' plan for archiving and organization set yet,
but I'm thinking hard on it.

Richard

specific questione you have asked.
Yes, this is ADSL I can use the internet and talk on the telephome at

 things have slowed way down.

We're going to need specifics. things covers a lot. Does the
problem occur with other applications, or just Safari? What about
 with Firefox?

The problem seems to occur with with anything I try to do. It does it
with both Safari and Firefos.
By the way, I seem to have done something I should't have because all
the words I am now typing appear with a red line under them.
When I open Safari I have to wait 20 or more seconds for the home
page to open. When I try to open any other page, the blue ribbon at
the top of the page takes 20 to 60 seconds to cross from left to
right to reach a point that activates any movement.

Have you tried clearing Safari's cache and website icons?

I have cleared the cache. I'm not sure about how to clear the website
icons.

Does this delay seem to be while the browser is trying to find the
site, or while it's obtaining data from it? Look at the bottom of
the window - is it stuck saying contacting or connecting or ...?

I would say mostly both, trying to find the site and while obtaining
data from it. For example, if I click on Bookmarks, the window opens
immediately but trying to open Banking takes time.

Run a speed test here and tell us the results:
 http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

This speed test says 731/128. I called Verizon and had them check my
spees. They said it was 864/160.

I will send some more answere as soon as possible.

Launch Terminal.app and issue these two commands, then copy the full
results and paste 'em into a reply here:

Is there a way to get this to stop?
Also, I did some of the steps I have found online to speed up Firefox
(these involve Adblock Plus, FireFTP, Forecastfox 10n) and have to do
with optimizing FF, disclosing memory leaks (the Forecastfox fix is
 one), etc.

First off, I'd update to Firefox 3.0.3 to see if that would solve your
problem.

I believe that's only for 10.4 and above. He must be using Panther
as I just booted up in 10.3.9 and my Firefox is also 2.0.0.17. I
think this thread is related to the one previously about Gmail. If
so, then perhaps the problem is he is using an older OS than everyone
who is trying to help him. Maybe that has something to do with his
original problem. Just a thought.

Just a message from Doug...

QT Pro (possibly with Perian installed) will deal with SWF files, and
let you convert them. The others mentioned deal with flash video files
(.flv) like those on YouTube. My favorite too for those is cosmopod, a
Safari Plugin. Perian also lets you deal with .flv files in QT.
Massively useful tool, turns QT pro into a major conversion tool.

Opinions on defunct G4 sawtooth

2008-10-15 Thread Brian Christmas

G'day

I just been to my neighbours house, where a tricked out G4 Sawtooth is
playing up.

The computer seems to boot, and the monitor light comes on (green)
after a few seconds, but there's no picture.

Would it be the radeon 7000 GC, or the monitor?

Regards
