When in Digest Mode, at the end of each and every message, the Low End Mac Footer has been repeating over and over and over again with the posting and the answer to it. Usually, and in the other LEM Lists I receive (all in Digest Mode), the footer does not carry over into the message to which one is replying. The LEM Footer appears only once at the end of the Digest. On this particular post to which I am replying now, I have deleted the footer, otherwise it'd appear twice in my answer here. Re: Safari unexpected quits on iMac g3
OS X is notoriously picky about RAM. RAM that tests fine in 9 or earlier can still cause problems in X. Even if you buy brand new RAM, though, there's no guarantee you won't still have a problem due to the fussiness of X. The tiniest of flaws that passes the memory manufacturers tests might still cause OS X to crash. RAM is a bit of a crap shoot with OS X. Most of the time you win, but a fair bit of the time you lose and there's nothing you can really do about it. On Apr 18, 5:22 pm, tentengrrl tenteng...@yahoo.com wrote: Hi, I acquired a used g3 600 iMac running Tiger w/256K RAM b/c I took out one 256 stick to test my problem. I want to use it for basic internet, Word docs/Preview, etc and these are generally fine but will crash once in a while. The main problem is I can't get the Safari to stay open, it keeps unexpectedly quitting or freezing but sometimes it's after an hour and other times, 5 min or 10 seconds. After that happens the other programs MIGHT do the same thing. It was like this when I first got it so I did the combo udpate to Tiger 10.4.11 and Safari is version 3.0.4 thinking it would help but no. Like I said, it's mostly Safari but during my testing of the sticks and slots by swapping them around, sometimes other programs will unexpectedly quit, I restart, Safari goes fine, other programs, too, and then a crash. Sometimes, after using only one stick I think the spinning beach ball freeze is due to just not enough RAM to load a page? But then I have enough RAM to run iTunes, Preview, Safari, and stickies all at once. (So I'm not sure. I'm still learning as I go along! When I look at the Problem Report it says Kern_bad_access and Kern-invalid address, or Kern_bad access and Kern_protection failure. I just can't get a definite pattern on it b/c it seems so random but sometimes it does ramp up, crashing quicker and quicker but I can't determine if it's one stick/slot all the way. I have looked online and this seems not uncommon and to be attributed to bad RAM to a preferences file all the way to just totally random. Does anyone have more info on this to shed some light? I was going to buy more RAM anyway soon but any info pertaining to what might be some other cause would help a lot. It's driving me crazy. I don't have any disks to run hardware tests and I don't really care to drop a lot of money into this iMac at this time. Is this a lost cause? Re: So what do you think about the iPad?
I have a phone (not an iPhone). I use it to speak to people. It's not fancy but I like the fact that it is shockproof, dustproof, and waterproof! I've dropped it a couple of times and it's still working. I spilt a cup of coffee on it: it's still working. I have a nice Mac (actually several G4/G5/intel) at home that run Mac OS and do all that I need them too. I also brought a Mac to work that performs better than the company supplied WinXP machine. I have to hide it away from the IT guys, under my desk ;-) For my mobile computing I still have my trusty G4 12 PowerBook. It has been around the world a number of times and given me sterling service since 2003. It has gone from being my primary computer, to being what I bring on vacations. I value portability in a mobile device, which is why I've kept it, but now I believe it is time to replace it with a 3G iPad. I think the iPad WILL fill my gap. If I bought a 13 MacBook Pro (which I was considering) then I suspect all my other machines would become redundant, and that would become my main machine. An iPad compliments and therefore extends the life of my current machines. I think, therefore iPad! --- On Sun, 4/18/10, Mark Sokolovsky coolmar...@gmail.com wrote: Guys and gals, I just want to survey some of you who respond to me by replying to me. Re: So what do you think about the iPad?
I would love the iPad with blootooth and at least one USB port. I wouldn't want toload it with features, that is what computers are for. To me. It is a great hardware “notebook” and should remain like that. Printing from it is essential, I think. All of them should come with G3 capabilities so you coudl dtsrta without and add that service later. The basic model should not exist. A card reader does not seem like a very expensive feature to add. This said, I think these are basic essentials that should escalate with price for model with additional features. The ultimate iPad should be made of a flexible material not invented yet, so I can roll it and fit in my purse ile a magazine, take to the bathroom, and throw to my dog. I think it is a great gadget and should stick around for many years. Price? I will wait until it is less expensive and it is not a novelty and a necessity. I can still do all of the above with the iPhone, though I wished I had the iPad everytime I have to watch ny videos and e-mails at bedtime. I would also consider having built-in bluetooth so i can connect to wireless printers, and also i would suggest firewire ports, USB ports, a mini-VGA port, a DVI port, and a smart card reader hidden behind a removable cover. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. OT: Why do scanners die with OS upgrades
It seems that I have to replace my scanner every few OS upgrades. My question is why do the upgrades make the scanner a paperweight. So either don't upgrade or buy a b\new scanner. I look more carefully at reports on people who have upgraded. but when I purchase a new computer it has a different (newer) OS running. I understand there are ways around the issue. I think the subject of video formats is somewhat in flux at the moment. Apple is a giant proponent of the H264 codec, but Google and most of the open source crowd don't like H264 because the codec isn't open source. Google owns a similar proprietary codec called VP8 that they acquired when the bought On2 Technologies, and it's rumored that Google will change VP8 to open source as early as this week. If they do this, it's likely that HTML5 will become more of a viable web standard for future video. Unfortunately, VP8 isn't currently supported in iTunes, so if Apple plays hardball with Google like they are with Adobe Flash things will get interesting. For now, the most compressed video codec recognized in iTunes is H264 and the format used by Handbrake (.m4v) will create compressed rips of DVDs in any desired quality that will catalog and play these movies directly from iTunes. The future may be very different, but for now, I think .m4v with H264 is the best format for iTunes compatibility. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: So what do you think about the iPad?
This is the trouble. Most people already have something that overlaps with iPad space: I already have 3G I already have a netbook/laptop I need usb Why? I need BT I think it has that. I need Mac OS mobile I don't. I want something as light as possible that I can pop in my messenger bag and be able to pull out as easily as a phone and get a map, read email, browse the web to look something up, look at pictures of young girls with few clothes on sorry I digress :-) I'm never going to write a novel on it, do Photoshop work, edit my next video. My wife has an Amazon Kindle. She likes books. She describes it a her single favorite possession. I get a lot from the web, and expect that the iPad will become mine. --- On Mon, 4/19/10, Richard Gerome onecoolka...@earthlink.net wrote: So so true about being like a drug and addicted... Are you talking about that wireless network thing they sell??? Where you can link up a few computers to it??? That's more money a month for that, plus I have to buy that thing too... If that is what you are talking about??? Now maybe I can make something to plug that USB card into that would transmit a signal and link up that way??? That's basically what Sprint's MIFI is... Sounds good but I'm tapped out every month being on SS disability only every month, I lost 3 weeks pay every month because of this... Thank God my daughter works for the Feds and gets a discount from Sprint, plus I get a discount on top of it for being a Premier Customer!!! Still can not afford to pay more... If anyone knows what's up with that it would be great!!! But I'm prob going to install it in my Powerbook and put Tiger on it in there, then put it in my Clamshell after... I am still pissed about that iPad and no USB...-Original Message- From: Mark SokolovskySent: Apr 19, 2010 4:29 PM To: g3-5-list@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: So what do you think about the iPad? Richard Gerome I also have a clamshell iBook. It's an original tangerine with 544MB of RAM, and it has jaguar on it. I keep up with it too.a very decent system to use, but mine is 11yrs old not 10. Just to clear out any rumors, the iBook (even the original blueberry and tangerine ones) can house up to 544MB of RAM. just go to:http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iBooks-PowerBooks/G3-iBook/ there you can get yourself a low-profile 512MB module for better "oomph" in your iBook. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: My G5 won't start up
Hello, Have made some decisions. Have checked out best I can. Burned up Power Supply at least. No discernible coolant leakage damage. Howsomever replacement PS and labor look to run $350 to $450 at best. Best PS replacement for me to do work $225-$275. I don't have the confidence anymore to fiddle with removing and then reinstalling TWO processors. You have to strip a lot of stuff to get to PS. Cost is over to well-over what I paid for this computer. I will scrap it, salvaging whatever I can that can be used on my old but reliable Sawtooth until I save enough out of my pension to buy another Mac with better potential longevity. Thanks and sorry about messing up my earlier attempt to reply. Re: My G5 won't start up
You're right... sawtooth PM g4 is very reliable. I have a 400Mhz PowerPC G4 CPU, 2GB SDRAM, 64MB ATI RADEON 9000 (i pulled the video card as a spare part from a quicksilver). It's running Leopard flawlessly. Front row is great, dashboard is no longer choppy, andi can open stacks without freezing. I thought my PM G4 was really being killed under leopard, because maybe i thought that such an old G4 can't handle it. In reality, Leopard was slow until i trashed that old ATI RAGE 128PRO card with 16MB of VRAM. After i got the new replacement video card, my system ran leopard much faster, and much more efficiently. The system runs great under leopard even though it has less that half the processing power required for leopard because leopard requires 512MB of RAM. 1GB is decent, but i have an extra 1GB to compensate for the missing 467MHz. It works fine. Professional software doesn't have dancing paper clips! -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Generic USB 2 PCI card
Roman said: think the chipset issue may be OK. Vendor ID 0x059b ktilfo...@cox.net : repliedI The chipset is sometimes separate from the reported Vendor ID Device ID. For example, many external enclosure use Oxford FW400 chipsets, and in this case, the chipmaker Oxford provides customer level firmware. However the OEM manufacturers often use custom firmware that identifies the Vender Device as something within their own company rather than Oxford. In your case, this USB-to- SATA bridge board is being identified as Iomega which to my knowledge doesn't manufacture chips, they manufacture enclosures. This means the real chipset would need to be identified by actually inspecting the chip to get the manufacturer model #. A Google search of the Vendor ID Device ID (0x059b0x0370) seems to turn up a litany of crash reports, all on Macs. This is a really bad omen, it appears that this external enclosure seems to be involved somehow in crashes of many applications including Final Cut Pro, FileMaker, HandBrake and others. These applications are all HD intensive applications, so it appears you've been doubly unlucky, you have a VIA chipset PCI card that has issues, and you also have an Iomega external USB enclosure that appears to have Mac specific issues that causes multiple HD intensive applications to crash. Another bothersome aspect is the firmware. Your Iomega drive reports firmware version 1.0f while others having the exact same Vendor ID Device ID are reporting different firmware such as f6.15. Normally identical Vendor ID Device ID would have identical firmware, and these two version #'s don't seemingly come from the same firmware series. It's possible that Iomega is using multiple chipset manufacturers and hiding this by using identical Vendor ID Device ID for very different but similar looking products. I think you've got a double whammy mess, and you probably need both a different PCI USB Card and a different HD enclosure. http://www.google.com/search?q=%220x059b%22%220x0370%22btnG=Search Thank you Kris, for this extra effort. Re: USB 2.0 with OS 9?
Install Tiger on e beige G3? Yeah right... unless you are looking to run into problems with performance, i suggest you go with jaguar. Here is what i suggest for your system to have before you get tiger on it: 300Mhz PowerPC G3 512MB RAM 16MB video RAM 30GB HDD Tiger will work on it for sure, but you really are stepping into the RED ZONE. Be prepared for video issues, KP, and most likely very slow performance. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I have an idea...
I perfectly understand that Snow Leopard is not supported at all under the PowerPC architecture, but what if i modified the code in the system? I do see a way that I can take the code from Leopard and put it in snow leopard. Then integrate Rosetta into the system to run the intel programs. It's a longshot, but it just might work. Would that be illegal? -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
