Hi Ari. Sounds like Jim kitchin's win simon game is exactly what your
looking for, it keeps going with as many numbers or sounds as you want, with
lots of different voice and sound samples to choose from.

You can find it at http://www.kitchensinc.net/

Subject: [Audyssey] Number Memory Game

 Hi all,
I know DanZ Memory and some other simon games which use sounds, but I want
 a
memory game, something like Tarzan Junior's, where the thing just uses
numbers or objects. Anything out there? I like the Kim game of 7128, but
what I don't like about it is that it stops and gives you a score, it
 should
just carry on with more objects!
 Thanks
 Ari

Hi Trouble,

Some day when I no longer have any ideas for new games to work on and have
nothing better to do, I might then go back and up date everyone of my games to
use all of the new programming techniques that I have learned over the years.
But when I play the games now they all run bug free when used the way that they
were meant to be used.

Hi Gary,

Ok, I will look into fixing just the alt key thing in Monopoly right after I
get done what I am working on right now.

There is no way that I could write a function for all of my games that would
give them a pause feature that would just trap all keys except for the key to
un pause it. If I had thought of that before I wrote the first game maybe I
could have built that into all of them, but the way that they are written it

  Hi Claudio,
Yes, creating games for the blind is very time consuming. Even with a
fully qualified engine such as the GMA Engine it will take you quite a
long time to produce a game from beginning to end. AGM had potential to
ease this problem, but as several others found out it was no instant
click, click, click game is done thing. I must have spent over a week
reading the docs before I got a grasp of how the thing worked and never
did come up with anything all that interesting.

 Hi all,

I am curious to know if anyone out there would be interested in me
doing a podcast on accessible games, and demonstrating a few? I'll be
using an emulator, and for some reason the nintendo 64 emulator won't
let me use the c button (I may have to experement with other
emulators), so some things I may not be able to do.

 games I may show:
 cruis'n USA
 Cruis'n world and exotica
 sanfransisco rush
 sanfransisco rush 2049
 rush 2: extreme racing
 killer instinct gold
super smash brothers, perhaps, if I can get the c buttons working. Um,

I'm trying to think what else. Not mortal kombat; I can't find it.
hmmm. perhaps MRC racing. gt64 championship addition, perhaps?
uh, what else. pokemon stadium is a maybe, I need to see if I can find
my real copy so I can fool around with it

That there will make a very long podcast, I'm thinking of, perhaps,
doing it in multiple epps, for example, one podcast per game? I also
may throw in a few sness games and sega genisus games; if I can find
 any.

 what yall think?

 Hi Cara,
As far as Raceway goes there are definitly work arounds about what
speech system to use, but each has an advantage/disadvantage. If I
want to completely port Raceway as is from C# .NET to Java there is a
commercial Sapi package, JSapi, put out by Cloud Garden that supports
all the usual Sapi engines like the Scansoft voices, Neospeech voices,
etc. The problem is that it isn't licensed very cheaply, and by using
the JSapi package from Cloud Garden I have to tie Raceway specificly
to the Windows os which defeats the purpose of a multiplatform game.
There is the option of FreeTTS. FreeTTS is a TTS engine written in
pure Java, for Java applications, but isn't exactly very high quality.
The final option is to prerecord the speech. Prerecording all the
voice files using a high quality synth or a human is the best way to
make the game pplatform independant. However, with prerecorded speech
there is less possibility of making the game customisable.

 Cara Quinn wrote:
Ah Thomas, you can see I've visited the website lately! lol!

anyway, very cool and I'd forgotten about SAPI as an issue, but I
too, would think there's got to be some sort of reasonable work
 around as you suggest.

 Hi all,

I am curious to know if anyone out there would be interested in me doing
a podcast on accessible games, and demonstrating a few? I'll be using an
emulator, and for some reason the nintendo 64 emulator won't let me use
the c button (I may have to experement with other emulators), so some
things I may not be able to do.

 games I may show:

I also may
throw in a few sness games and sega genisus games; if I can find any.

 what yall think?

Have a good day from Tyler C. Wood!

Yeah, agreed here, for that purpose, I'll say here that I am going to try
and do a podcast on rush 2: extreme racing, since I can get the codes in on
the physical console. However, I'm not sure how the quolity will be, and
I'll get a line in cable if possible to hook up to my tv. I'll try it as I
said.

 Hi Josh.

Thanks much for the info. I tend to prefer the physical consoles over
emulators if I can get my hands on them, but yeah the emulators are good
to check a system out and see if it is something you are really
interested in before you actually lay out any money.

 Thanks again.

 Hi,

I think the sega emulator is good especially if you're running an older
computer or if you just want the games to be snappy. either that or
 super
 nintendo console.

Hi Tyler sounds great. I have not gotten into any of the newer game

systems however as a lot of you know my whole initial gaming
experience was on the old Atari computers and systems long before
there was any such thing as accessible games. It's not something that

I am interested in sinking a whole lot of money into or anything but I

may pick up either a Sega or one of the sony consoles if I find one
cheap and can decide which would be best. That might be something
good to include in your podcast which consoles are good to start out
with in your opinion and so forth.

Good luck and keep us posted.

[Audyssey] New portable games break traditional molds

2008-03-03 Thread Everett Elam
New portable games break traditional molds

By Scott Hillis Fri Feb 29, 10:06 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Bizarre little creatures that look like walking
eyeballs and a puzzle-cracking professor may not seem to have much in common at
first glance.

But they are the stars of two new vastly different hand-held video games that
are winning praise for the ways they combine different genres to produce quirky
new experiences.

Patapon, out this week for Sony's PSP, is being hailed as one of the system's
best games. It is perhaps best characterized as a rhythm-based, side-scrolling
real-time strategy game.

Confused? Here's how it works.

You play the god-like leader of the Patapons, an oppressed race who just need a
little rhythmic inspiration to help regain their former glory.

You must build up a Patapon army, which you then command by tapping buttons in
time with a beat, pulling off different combinations to advance, attack and
defend.

You'll collect resources like stone, iron and branches that can be used to
create new soldiers or make your existing ones more powerful.

Patapons and other characters appear as black silhouettes against the game's
vividly colored backgrounds, like paper cutouts held up to a light. The music
is a wild mix of percussion, hypnotic chanting and Celtic influences.

Once you hear the chanting and the 'pata pata pata pon', it kind of gets in
your head, said Christian Hinojosa-Miranda, a producer who worked on the U.S.
version of the game.

'Patapon' really strikes to the heart of the PSP, which is simple, really
addictive gameplay with awesome design, he added.

But it is a fairly tough game that rewards patience and attention to detail.
There are few instructions, and it's often only through trial-and-error that
players will advance through the game.

The game is very deep and sophisticated and if you let it sort of guide you,
the experience is very rewarding, said Jennifer Tsao, group managing editor
for the 1Up Network.

BREAKING TRADITIONAL MOLDS

Professor Layton and the Curious Village, for Nintendo's DS handheld, is as
friendly and welcoming a game as can be imagined.

But it, too, breaks traditional molds, melding a mystery story, point-and-click
adventure, and brain teasers similar to those in Nintendo's hit Brain Age
and Big Brain Academy franchises.

As you explore a town and its strange residents, you'll come across more than
130 puzzles including optical illusions, spatial problems, and geometry
questions.
If you get stuck, you can buy hints with coins found hidden throughout the town.

It's a game no one can feel bad about or condemn. It makes math fun, it makes
word problems fun, it challenges you to think about problems in a new way.
It's got a great story, lovely art, and nice voice acting, Tsao said.

That earnestly friendly approach has helped Nintendo win new customers among
people who would never otherwise glance at a video game.

I'm not a core gamer myself but I'm rapidly becoming one with products like
'Professor Layton', Cammie Dunaway, the new executive vice president of sales
and marketing for Nintendo's U.S. operations who joined the company last
November.

I really think it has the potential to become a very, very nice franchise here
in the U.S., with lots of appeal, Dunaway said in an interview.

Hi folks

I've been playing the shareware version of quake with the Audio quake engine.

Are there any sites around that describe the maps and type of monsters.

The ID Software site is pretty useless.

I'm currently bidding on a full copy of Quake on Ebay and hopefully I'll win
that.

Any other tips or tricks would really be apreciated.

What game are you refering to? I played single race mode, take down. I got

when you had to race to get in first place. Crash mode was easy enough,
 too.
I just couldn't do that world tour.

Yeah they were. I love the ps1's sound when the game starts up. The
 ps2
 was
great, too- it automatically loaded a game- but, the dreamcast, in all
honesty, is the best way to get around menus. If a menu is stil up
 when
 you
put a game in, just press all the shoulder buttons (l and r), and
 you'll
 be
taken out of it, I think. I haven't played mine in a while- but its a
 great
system. I love it. Mortal kombat games rock on there. An oldy but a
 goody,
as they say. I will never sell mine. Only thing that sucks is, instead
 of
the fan giving heat to all the circuits, the dreamcast has a fan
 because
 its
working damn hard (so do! not! cover! the! vents). The PS2 and xbox
 could
live without it for a while, but the dreamcast can't. Covering the fan
 will
result in fire, not could, but will. I had it happen to me. the ps2 is
 fine
for about 5 or 10 minutes, and the xbox about 5. I haven't tested
 this-
 but
people have told me- but it happened with an old dreamcast of mine.
 The
 fan
is absolutely required to keep it cool- oh btw. The dreamcast memory
 card
beeps if its in a controller when you turn on the system. (Don't worry
 about
not knowing where your controllers are!). BUt back to the fan. Notice
 when
you move through selections on the dreamcast, the fan temp changes,
 etc.
 The
ps2's fan is actually quiet- I had my ps2 sitting 5 days non stop,
 because
 I
owned no memory card, and it worked flawlessly. The dreamcast will get
rather hot, but it'll do ok if left for a while. But since memory
 cards
 go
for around five bucks, I can't complain.

USA Games News

Introduction

Greetings gamers,
There is a lot going on here at USA Games Interactive. I can not begin
to tell all of you how stressful and busy life has become for my wife
and I over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, there have been several
disruptions to our current game productions including a vicious hacker
break in on the USA Games web server, and a grievous disagreement over
the copyright issues over Montezuma's Return. As a result I am
attempting to single-handedly get things straitened out. Which isn't an
easy job considering both the web site and games need urgent attention
as well as my daily duties as a husband, parent, contract developer,
etc. Basically, a very busIn addition to the afore mentioned issues I've
been strongly looking at taking USA Games in an entirely different
direction development wise. There are a lot of different factors I need
to look at before I eventually decide one way or the other where to go
with our new development projects. One of the biggest questions I am
personally dealing with is weather or not to remain with C# and use the
XNA Framework, which is not very accessible, or move all our games to
Java. Either way I do feel that a change in direction is necessary in
order to stay on the cutting edge of software development.
One final note before I get down to the real news I'd like to announce
USA Games new developers initiative. On Feb. 22, 2008 USA Games
officially launched
http://developers.usagames.us
which is a wiki specially setup and designed for those of you interested
in learning how to program your own accessible games. As of the time of
this writing there is still a lot of work that needs to be completed
such as a frequently asked questions section, Getting Started Guide, and
of course adding several tutorials and training materials to the web
site to research. Obviously, as strapped as I am with everything else
the site isn't going to be completed soon, but I do hope to have some
definitive guides, tutorials, and articles for accessible game
programming sometime in the future.

Changes In Development

In January 2007 Microsoft released its latest operating system, Windows
Vista, with many new features, technologies, and has transformed the
industry standards for how game programmers design games for the new
Windows platform. In the past someone with a little C++ or Visual Basic
know-how could create Windows games using the Win32 API as well as the
DirectX SDK.
In 2001 Microsoft introduced the .NET Framework for Windows developers.
Sometime after that Microsoft released DirectX 9.0 with a new technology
called Managed DirectX. Managed DirectX is an optional DirectX upgrade
that allows C++ .NET, C# .NET, and Visual Basic .NET developers to add
DirectX to games and other multimedia applications. In 2006 Microsoft
announced they were going to release Managed DirectX 2, but later
reversed their decision and canceled the release of Managed DirectX 2.
Soon after releasing Windows Vista Microsoft announced the release of
the XNA Framework.
The XNA Framework is a new set of gaming libraries and APIs from
Microsoft specially targeting new games for the XBox 360, Windows XP,
and Windows Vista. Like managed DirectX XNA is based upon the .NET
technology, and is specially designed for C# .NET game developers. That
would be fine except for a big problem. I discovered in order to use the
XNA technology in my future games I would have to pack my game sound
files using a tool named Xact. As luck would have it Xact is very
unaccessible with Jaws, Window Eyes, NVDA, or any other screen reader I
have tried.
To add insult to injury in August 2007 Microsoft announced in their
DirectX release notes that Managed DirectX was to be phased out of the
following DirectX SDK release. True to form the November DirectX SDK had
no official support for .NET developers putting USA Games in a real bind.
The situation is simply this. If USA Games is to continue using C# as
our development language of choice we will either have to stick with the
DirectX August 2007 release, find a way to work with Xact, or find some
alternative language and APIs to use. Luckily, we are not without
options and choices. Just a very time consuming issue when we are
already behind on two games already.
At the time being USA Games is looking at the possibility of moving all
our source code to Java. While it would be a major undertaking there are
several good reasons why USA Games is looking at switching. Those
reasons will briefly be discussed below.
First, Java is one of the most flexible, highly portable, platform
independent languages used by programmers today. Since Java relies on
its own libraries, shipped with the Sun Java runtime environment, a Java
based game can potentially be created on Windows, but be made to run
with very little to no modifications to support Mac, Linux, Sun Solaris,

Audyssey Folks,

Marketing got this idea for a St. Paddy's Day special.
20% off a Game Book that contains Inspector Cyndi in Newport - When Irish
Spies are Smiling.

It's pretty cool. Someone has stolen Mr. Holland's experimental submarine
from the Newport Torpedo Station. You're the Detective. Inspector Cyndi is
there to offer suggestions. You travel around the Newport of the 1890's
questioning folks like Phineus the Fiendish Fenian in order to solve the
crime.

Thanks to Jeremy and Thomas, we've improved the self-voicing and background
sound handling.

BTW. The game's based on an actual incident. The Fenians did steal
Holland's sub, in New Jersey. But they didn't know how to drive it, and ran
it aground.

The Game Book contains 4 puzzle and word games as well.

The coupon code is: DUBLIN.

Check it out at www.7128.com.

[Audyssey] Accessible online blackjack

2008-03-03 Thread Christian
Hi all,
Has anyone found any online blackjack game to be accessible?
I have been able to play one, but I would like to try others as well.
All the best,
Christian

Re: [Audyssey] bug with jim kitchens monopoly

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Gary,
Well, there is no way to create a function that will work with all the
games unless he edits them all by hand coding it 25 or 26 times. I can
understand where he is coming from not wanting to update 26 games at
once perhaps put it in the todo file for each game under consideration
for other updates.
As for Raceway there will be a pause feature for those real pit stops
you mentioned. As well as a save game feature. Grin

Gary Whittington wrote:
 Awh, that's sad to here.
As you said that you don't want to touch this problem even for your most
 popular game to be included.
Still to switch out of the Monopoly game to do something to help others play
in a Voice Chat room, the host still needs not only to save the game but
bring it back up and resume the game.
To leaving the game like that Jimmy is not very user friendly, even if the
 game is free.

My suggestion, is to build a function that could fit all your games.
What I see is a Pause function. Gamers who need to pop out of the game
say to take instant message or what ever can pause the game.
This function usually consists of the keyboard only accepting the toggle
switch to resume the game, while other keystrokes like Alt-tab could be
 invoke.

For Tom I do hope you have a pause feature in Raceway, when one really needs
 a real Pit stop. Wink.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
Well, not exactly. Using Java to wrap software not in the native
language is still a bit of a pain for me, and ESpeak does have a
different type of license. ESpeak is licensed as open source which
probably prevents it as being shipped with a commercial product, but I'd
have to check on its specific open source license agreement. Each open
source license is a tad bit different.

 Hi thomas,

you could maybe modify ESpeak and use it?

Hi,
Yeah, tell me about it. I know why they used Flash, because it is a
quick and easy language, but Flash isn't exactly known for blazing
speed. The exicution times of the AGM games down right sucked eggs.

Easy. Most Windows screen readers support the dos window called the

Re: [Audyssey] GMA Game Engine?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
The GMA Game Engine doesn't require programming. Most of it is using
check boxes, edit boxes, and you put some stuff in text files. Yes, you
can distribute a *.exe file with your game, but it is mute at the moment
since GMA currently isn't releasing the engine.

josh wrote:
now that sounds cool. and will you need programming to make games with it?
or is it like some kind of scripting language? also will i make .exe files?

Re: [Audyssey] GMA Game Engine?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,
True, but then again the GMA Engine was designed with the intent you
would be selling your games. If you were selling your games you would
probably be able to pay those prices and still make enough off the games
to do something useful with your earnings. The GMA Game Engine was never
designed with the idea of making a bunch of freebies to hand out.

Bryan wrote:
I would assume it would create an exe file. That's what we install on our

 we average blindies can afford.

Hi Gary,
Lol! Yeah, big crash. Though, it is very true. The older a program gets
it needs to be updated if the developer wishes it to remain with current
technology trends. Though, we have been down this road before and I
don't have any plans of venturing down it again.

Re: [Audyssey] Creating Games was X-Sight news

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, I am honestly not too surprised. We are actually talking about
students that just want to get the course work finished, get their
grades, and get on with life. The AGM for all intents and purposes was a
sample application that shows how accessible games can quickly be built
and redistributed using an engine like AGM.
What is useful to know about this is that USA Games or anyone else can
use the AGM example to make a similar product, commercially, which would
be far better and mor stable than AGM.

Trouble wrote:
maybe doomed for us on usage, but bet it got them some good
grades. They showed a game engine for those with disabilities could be
done. Would of ben nice if finished, but noticed a tren going with
schools and projects. A while back it came across list of a flight
sim and now a game engine. It looks like as long as the grade ain't
in. The work keeps going and does turn into something possibly
useable. Once grade is in, the project dropped and forgotten.

Hi,
Right. And you can bet your best horse that Raceway isn't going open

At worst I will dig someone up to record the game announcements, menus,

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tyler,
Well, you can't actually create your own stock car, but Raceway will
allow you to select the type of stock car from a list of options. For
example, you will be prompted when starting a new season if you want to
have a Chevy, Dodge, Ford, or Toyoda stock car. Beyond that I haven't
actually come up with more customization between those, but perhaps some
Nascar fans out there can help shake out some more specifics on the
available stock cars.
There is still going to be a list of sponsors, but if i use pre-recorded
speech you will only have the stock list to choose from. You won't be
able to add new sponsors to the list which may or may not be a big deal
with some folks.

Re: [Audyssey] writing a text adventure

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi all,

Ok, it looks as though it is time to stick my big fat foot in my mouth.
I went over to blindprogramming.com and read the home page. That happens
to be Droople's unexciting default home page with absolutely no content
on the web site. Basicly, a dead site.
I then, just attempted to subscribe manually based on my last known
blind programming subscription addresses and again no show. It looks as
though the site is really and truly gone unless there is something we
are all missing.
Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] bug with jim kitchens monopoly

2008-03-03 Thread Gary Whittington
I was thinking of an external pause function. Where each game then would
only have a line or two of code that executes the external program.
Just looking a way to solve Jimmy need to improve all his games.

Those who wanted to upgrade to those improved games could.
Do the games that have the bigger demand like Monopoly, which takes a long
time to play. Small games that
don't can be bypass- Original Message -ed. MOnopoly with its
multiplayers certain is a must as any other Jim's game that may be played by
more then one players.
Playing a game with friends or family members and you as a host of the game
then by mistake you Tab out of the game, it don't look good for you as if
you were trying to abort the game or just could not handle the game
correctly.

My point is not to do the face left on all the games all at once.
But give improvements to the games that really could use a pause feature, so
it don't crash and make the game look shabby workmenship.

There's game again that take time to play and changing windoes is so a
natural thing to do with out thinking, its just easy to tab out of the game
with out saveing.

Jim's older games for DOS may not have the problem and it onlly looks to be
the games for windoes that usings the menu system to play them.
It may be this menu system that is causing the crashes, and if so its the
menu system may be the program only needs to be improved.

This no flare just a friendly suggestions to improve upon will built games.

The worst feeling besides losing a game is winning one and then it crashes
with a lot of time invested.

 Hi Gary,
Well, there is no way to create a function that will work with all the
games unless he edits them all by hand coding it 25 or 26 times. I can
understand where he is coming from not wanting to update 26 games at
once perhaps put it in the todo file for each game under consideration
 for other updates.
As for Raceway there will be a pause feature for those real pit stops
you mentioned. As well as a save game feature. Grin

 Awh, that's sad to here.
As you said that you don't want to touch this problem even for your most
 popular game to be included.
Still to switch out of the Monopoly game to do something to help others
 play
in a Voice Chat room, the host still needs not only to save the game but
bring it back up and resume the game.
To leaving the game like that Jimmy is not very user friendly, even if
 the
 game is free.

My suggestion, is to build a function that could fit all your games.
What I see is a Pause function. Gamers who need to pop out of the game
say to take instant message or what ever can pause the game.
This function usually consists of the keyboard only accepting the toggle
switch to resume the game, while other keystrokes like Alt-tab could be
 invoke.

For Tom I do hope you have a pause feature in Raceway, when one really
 needs
 a real Pit stop. Wink.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Geremy,
Agreed. I am not as interested in so much the full custom driver, car,
and track thing is making the game more authentic to true Nascar driving
and racing. In this respect having a human doing announcements is much
better. Especially, when there needs to be some excitement in the
announcement.
For example, you are on the final lap you are the leader. You want the
announcement to say something in an excited sportsmans voice, One more
lap until victory lain!
Other senarios require equal emotion to make the game feel real. Like
Thomas Ward has just put on a huge burst of spead and now is in the
lead. Geremy Gilley is now in second place. Ron is still trailing the
pack, and needs 5 more laps to complete this race.
Of course, if we wanted to be totally authentic it would be sort of
funny to include some loud, upset, ticked, off cussing at some choice
moments. Where in h*** did he come from? Oh s***, his front tire just
blew itself to h*** and back. Though, since this is a G rated game I
won't have any of that, but it would be funny.

 Hi Gary,

Ok, I will look into fixing just the alt key thing in Monopoly
 right after
I get done what I am working on right now.

There is no way that I could write a function for all of my games
 that
would give them a pause feature that would just trap all keys
 except for
the key to un pause it. If I had thought of that before I wrote
 the first
game maybe I could have built that into all of them, but the way
 that they
are written it just simply would not work at all.

Yeah, I'd find it hard to believe if they perished, but it seems
so. -Or at least the addie seems to have changed.

There was actually quite a bit of intelligence on that list, with
various peeps being involved in some pretty heady projects. lol!

Very fun list at times.

Anyway, thanks, and have an awesome evening!…

[Audyssey] JAVA SWT - Was USA Games News 3/3/2008

2008-03-03 Thread John Bannick
Thomas,

You just gave me the first good reason to learn SWT.
I've been doing Java Swing since it was in Beta.

But I hate having to deal with the Java Access Bridge.
And being able to get our stuff to work with WindowEyes and NVDA, not just
JAWS and HAL, would be great.
I use Eclipse every day and have done a little SWT, which is a clone of
Swing anyway.
Not to say that we'll convert everything today.
But your information is extremely interesting and I gotta think seriously
about this.

Thanks for being a great resource,
