Re: [Audyssey] manuals - Re: I give!!!!

2009-03-31 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

I have and had the same problem with programming manuals such as for DirectX.
I just don't understand them at all. Allen Maynard shared some DirectX code
with me, if it weren't for that I probably still would not know how to use
DirectX.

You know I have really never been able to learn from manuals. Well except for
the manual that came with my first computer, the Texas Instruments 99 4A. But
even that was just that I typed in some example source code and experimented
with it. So really example source code from here and there and experimenting
with it is how I have learned to program games.

I didn't get the documentation for the manuals!

Hello everyone. It looks like the move was successful. Since around 5 pm
this afternoon Eastern daylight savings time, the list has been operating
from the new web host. I'd like to take the time now to thank 3 very
special list members who have contributed to the list. It's because of
these 3 members that the list hosting and audyssey.org domain registration
has been paid for to last an additional year.

I will not mention their names because I know of at least one who wanted
to remain anonymous. However if anyone wants to speak up, feel free as I
know who you are *smile*.

Many thanks to all, and happy gaming.

Hi Brandon,

Mach 1 tts is a new version of Mach 1 that I am writing to work specifically
with my Logitech MOMO Racing steering wheel joystick. It should also work ok
with other joysticks slash game controllers, but I don't know about keyboard
support. You know because the steering wheel, gas peddle and brake peddle have
variable input and a key on a keyboard does not. A few other differences as
well, but it is still not going to have all of the features that Top Speed does.

Hi Dragon,
A beer can opener was used to open beer cans before there were pop tops.
It was a metal tool about three forths of an inch wide and about four inches
long and had a curved pointed end and a little curved piece that fit under
the beer can top edge.
The little piece was used as a hinge for the pointed end to pierce the top
of the beer can and make a triangle shaped hole in it.
I would sometimes make a hole on the other side of the top to let the air in
the can.

 Beware the Grue!
Hearing about this group for years, its existence finally peeked its
 nose
from beneath the rock where it was biding its time to strike.
The GREW, or Game Researchers of Unrelenting Excellence, was formed to
 do
away with and discourage those not worthy to play games.
Their Chairman of the Bored, code name Dark, led his minions to
unrelenting messing up the heads of fledgling game enthusiasts.
From suggesting dial up users to download games so large they would tie
their computers up for days, to sending neophyte game players on wild
goose chases after non-existing game sites, the GRUE kept up an
unrelenting pressure to make game play fit only for those worthy to leap
 over their obstacles.
Their time to strike came when Dark released a Beware the Grue! game.
It was truly a game to Beware, as the download was one gigabyte, it had
500 different creatures attacking you, and all you had to defend
 yourself
with, was a rusty pen knife and a beer can opener.

And to discourage all but the most faithful of game players, the game
 was
 voiced entirely by Microsoft Sam.

[Audyssey] Final Conflict Strategies

2009-03-31 Thread kelby carlson
I just downloaded and have begun playing with Star Trek: Final
Conflict. I don't know why, but I'm not always very good at
these particular strategy games. I have a specific strategy in
mind, but can't for the life of me figure how to pul it off.
Here's what it is:

My ships will fly in a rough v-formation. Two sovereign-class
ships will the the points, two will fly close together in the
middle, and the Defiant will be cloaked in the back for surprise
maneuvers. This seems to be a good idea because it would let me
box in opponents, keep my ships together and have decent
maneuverability. But ... how would I do something like this?

every time
I play on expert level. You can kill the cyclop with every of

of course, arrows and the shotgun are most effective. Ok, you

then even jump at him with the combat knife and finish him off.

2009-03-31 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Kelby,
Good question. That particular formation would be fairly tricky to set
up, but can be done with a lot of practice. What I would do is send all
of my ships to a staging area, a place to assemble the fleet, start two
ships out, wait a move, send the second two ships out, wait a move, and
then trail the fleet with the Defiant. Now, if you want to create a v
type for mation you'll have to give the ships different headings for a
couple of moves until they spreed out. For example if you want a wide v
formating and you were heading towards Cardassian Space set one side of
the formation to a heading of 325 and the other to 45. After a move or
so you would get a v style formation, and then you can set all ships to
0 so that they then head straight up the starmap.

Thanks a bunch, Tom. I had part of that worked out, but it was
setting the ship's on the right course that tripped me up. I
have a couple more questions.

1. Is there a way to tell the exact coordinates of a ship? This
would help me immensely to try and get everything into formation.

2. Will the v-formation I'm describing work well for shooting

Re: [Audyssey] Final Conflict Strategies

2009-03-31 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Kelby,

Kelby Said:
1. Is there a way to tell the exact coordinates of a ship? This would
help me immensely

to try and get everything into formation.

Tom Says:
There is no way to get the exact coordinates of the ship. However, you
can use the short range sensors to figure out what ship is where in your
formation. This is how I find out if my ships are in a formation and how
close or far away each ship is from the rear or leading attack elements.

Kelby Said:
2. Will the v-formation I'm describing work well for shooting down the
enemy?

Tom Says:
Hard to say. There are a lot of random elements in STFC such as enemy
formation, what style of attack the enemy will choose, whatever. In one
game that formation you described will work well. In antoerh game that
same strategy or technique will fail miserably. You will never know what
trick or tricks the enemy has up their sleaves.
Here is a case in point. One time I gathered all my ships at Earth
Station McKinley. Then, I launched them into Klingon space. The Klingons
ameet me head on and and blasted all five Klingon ships into dust and
lost no ships in the encounter. I thought I was doing pretty good,
patted myself on the back for a job well done, and thought i could head
back tot he station for resupplies. No such luck. The Romulans sprang an
attack from my rear and blew away two ships before I knew they were
there. I was low on firepower so I was basically throwing what i could
at them to try and escape. No Such luck. They were fresh, my ships were
not, and I lost everything except the Defiant in that Romulan attack. It
then became a very difficult challenge using the Defiant to perform hit
and run attacks to even the score. I took several enemies with me before
i was finally over run.
The moral of the story is I started out with a grand strategy. It was
working well until the Romulans pulled a fast one on me. I hadn't
expected an all out attack on my rear flank. I figured based on passed
experience, and having written the enemy AI, that the Romulans would try
and take out the stations while they were undeffended. I wasn't
expecting the AI to come up with such a briliant counter strategy. It
does that some times and it amazes even me.Rule of thumb watch out for
the unexpected to happen from time to time.

Smile.

Greetings, All inPlayers,

We're happy to announce that our fifth game, Loco Locution, is officially
gold. Our diligent beta testers have helped us make Loco the best it can
be, and we thank all of you.

The launch of Loco also heralds the start of fifteen days of free access!
That's right, in keeping with our tradition of opening the site after we
release a title, we're busting open the doors of Allinplay.com for a
fifteen-day free period starting today. Anyone can jump on and play free
through April 15, so tell your friends!

Not only that, get ready for a Loco weekend! We'll host two tournaments as
follows:
On Friday April 10, starting at 3 pm U.S. eastern, 2000 GMT, everyone is
invited to play in the Loco Draw Poker tournament. Get back to the basics
with 24 hours of five-card fun.

On Saturday April 11, immediately following the conclusion of the Draw Poker
tourney, we'll up the ante with 24 hours of Hold'em hysteria.

But don't worry, we won't be celebrating long. We'll be right back to work
on our sixth game. And sorry, we can't tell you what it is yet, but we
*can* say it's the game we get the most requests for, so keep your ears
pealed!

Cheers,

The All inPlay Team

[Audyssey] Sarah game infringes J.K. Rowling ’s copyright

2009-03-31 Thread Phil Vlasak
Just in: After four months of deliberating, Judge Robert Patterson has ruled
that the Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry game infringes J.K.
Rowling’s copyright in the Harry Potter series.

According to the AP, Judge Patterson granted an injunction, ruling that
Rowling had proven that PCS Game’s “Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry” would cause her irreparable harm as a writer.

The suit, filed late last year against PCS Games, an independent game
developing company in Michigan, alleged that plans by Michigan-based game
developer PCS Games to sell a game, Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry, who's Web site that serves as a rather daunting compendium of all
games for the blind, violated Warner and Rowling’s copyright and takes away
the future market for a similar game that Rowling and Electronic Arts plans
to develop.

Here’s the opinion.

Judge Patterson ruled in Rowling’s favor because the “Sarah game
appropriates too much of Rowling’s creative work for its purposes.” He also
wrote that, “While the Sarah game, in its current state, is not a fair use
of the Harry Potter works, games that share the Sarah game’s purpose of
aiding blind game players of being able to play a Harry Potter game
generally should be encouraged rather than stifled.”

Ethan Horwitz, an IP lawyer at King Spalding, told the Law Blog: “What
Judge Patterson is saying is that when you look at fair use, one of the
dominant issues is, are you providing commentary or taking the value of the
work and selling it as your own? He decided that the value of the work was
being taken, that [Rowling] had the ability to develop the kind of game that
PCS Games was putting out, and that she’d indicated an intent to do so.”

April Fool!
smiles,
Phil

Subject: [Audyssey] Sarah game infringes J.K. Rowling’s copyright

[Audyssey] Lone Wolf update

2009-03-31 Thread Bryan Peterson
Well I've made it to mission 4 and sent the last few days getting pounded to
bits by one or more of the destroyer escorts. I downloaded Raul's walkthroughs
but I've bee trying to resort to those as little as possible. The key seems to
be finding a way to get near the destroyers without immediatelybeing detected.
As it is by the time I detect one, open the torpedo doors and begin tracking
I've missed my chance to fire on them. I don't dare trying the deck gun given
how long it takes to target anything. So at the moment my seafaring is
at...well maybe not a standstill but certainly a crawl.

Re: [Audyssey] Changes in MOTA Beta 4

2009-03-31 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Michael,
At this point in time I really don't know when I'll be able to support
64 byt versions of XP, Vista, and Windows 7. As I mentioned before I am
currently using Visual Studio Express which doesn't allow the developer
to recompile for other target platforms. To solve this I'll likely have
to purchase Visual Studio Pro, or compile using the 60 day trial
release. So I plan to try and make a 64 byt compatible version after
the game source is stable, runs well, and can be ported to Windows 64
using the trial release of Visual Studio Pro.

HTH
