2010-01-22 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Jacob,

It sounds like your computer speakers may be larger than mine. I don't turn
mine up too loud since I live in an apartment building. Plus the building is
built on a cement slab so it takes some to get that to vibrate much. But hey
some of the explosions etc in games are felt at my feet since the sub woofer
speaker is on the floor.

I used to run my computer out through my stereo with it's RTR speakers with their 15
inch woofers. grin But they are not located for a good stereo separation for
my computer desk, so that doesn't work out so well for game play were you need that.

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-22 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for letting me know that. I just really like and am used to and
familiar with VB6, so would very much like to continue using it even when I
need to get a new Windows 7 computer.

TGIF and BFN

- Original Message -
Hi Jim,
No, you don't need the SDK to include the Sapi dll file to a VB 6
orVB .NET project. Like I said before it is a comm component and it is
available for these languages with or without the SDK. All the SDK does
is provides end user documentation, and the C++ headers and libs, plus
the extra Sapi 5 voices. That's all. There is nothing special added for
Visual Basic 6. You might have to browse for the object reference, but
it is still there or can be added without the SDK.
As I mentioned before once the VB 6 runtime is installed your games
seames to work fine with Sapi 5.3 so you already know the basic code
anyway. There are some advanced features in 5.3 you aren't taking
advantage of, but for compatibility sake you know all you need to know
about Sapi for your games.
The one thing I don't know if it is compatible is the VB 6 IDE itself.

According to the Microsoft web site you need Visual Basic 2005 service
pack 1 or higher for Windows 7. Since I already have Visual Basic 2008
I've never tried installing and using anything earlier. So that might or
might not be a problem for you.
As far as voices goes let me just say here are the voices I have and
that work with Windows 7. First, I have all of the Scansoft voices that
shipped with Openbook 8 and Jaws 9 that are Sapi 5.x compatible and I've
had no problems with them. I also own Cepstral Callie 5 and she also
works with Windows 7 so I'd say all of the Cepstral 5 voices will work
equally as well. I also have ATT Mike and Crystal I believe 4.x
something and haven't had the problems others mentioned. The free and
open source Espeak TTS engine works fine on Windows 7 too. Finally, I
have the Acapela Heather and Lucy voices version 2.2, and they work ok
as well. So I don't think there is a lot of room to worry about high
quality voices for Windows 7 as long as they are Sapi 5.x compatible
they should all work fine. If you really have serious concerns I'd
e-mail nextup.com tech support and ask them if they know of any Windows
7 compatibility issues to be aware of. They would know more than me on
this subject since selling these voices are their business.

HTH

Actually Will, yes it does work. When you download the demo you get the
seven levels we've been allowed for the last few Betas. Once you submit your
payment you use that menu option for upgrading to the full version. The game
will contact the server to see if you've made a payment. If you have it'll
find it and do its magic to become the full version. I haven't done so yet
(I'm waiting until some rather serious balance issues are taken care of),
but it'll become registered, meaning you gain access to more dungeon levels,
races and things.

Actually Will, yes it does work. When you download the demo you get the
seven levels we've been allowed for the last few Betas. Once you submit
your

payment you use that menu option for upgrading to the full version. The
game

will contact the server to see if you've made a payment. If you have
it'll

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Well, there is system security to keep in mind. Knock on wood I have not
gotten one virus on my Windows Vista or Windows 7 based systems yet.
However, I've had several virus problems with Windows XP. In fact, the
family computer, running XP, was taken out by a nasty virus a couple of
weeks ago, but the rest of the systems on the network running Linux and
Windows 7 were uneffected. This isn't to say Windows 7 isn't invonerable
to virus attacks, but one reason the virus didn't spread any further is
that User Account Control prompted me to run program x, and when I
realised it was the virus I told it not to run it, and that stopped the
virus cold. So even though some people find UAC a pain to use it is one
more extra layer of security from these kinds of attacks.

about just getting another system, putting xp on there and remaining where I
 am.
Once this last pc thing is sorted there will be no need to upgrade anything.

Like I said all of the ATT voices that are Sapi 5 compatible work fine
on Vista and Windows 7. The only thing I can think of that would have

hmmm.
right now the rc versions are fased.
every new release or so we will get more levels.
The issue is that all the new stuff needs to be debugged and ballanced.
right now for instance its hell out there.
though I don't have the full product yet a thing I will do soon I hope.
This may be delayed as I try to sort another major upgrade for the main user

but I should still be able to do that.

well it also depends on what you have.
I have a headphone, and subs which if I set them right and the computer volume
the software controled control on the hd card works quite well.
however on the amp i use.
I need to turn the computer speakers to full, plug in the amp then run it that
way.
this suggests the sub has a preeamp of some kind because I don't need to boost
imput to much or output on the system.

I used to run my computer out through my stereo with it's RTR speakers with
their 15 inch woofers. grin But they are not located for a good stereo
separation for my computer desk, so that doesn't work out so well for game
play were you need that.

[Audyssey] Fighting Games (Number Notation?)

2010-01-22 Thread Orin
Hey all,

I was looking at a move list, and as well as standard notation, it had number
notation as well like with the buttons being represented as 1-9.

I guess this is for the people who have the fighting joysticks? Was trying to
understand it and well I knew that forward is 6, 2 is down, but I'm wondering
what 1-3 and 7-9 are?

Re: [Audyssey] Fighting Games (Number Notation?)

2010-01-22 Thread Brice Mellen
Well, it depends on what fighting game your looking up moves for, usually 2
is down 4 is back up is 8 and forward is 6, and then it usually works the
same for the other side of the controller, but if it's a fighting game for
the computer, then I couldn't help you their, this is for console fighters.

Re: [Audyssey] Elite was RE: classic games

2010-01-22 Thread Jacob Kruger
The speakers are around 2 feet tall - maybe just under, but only around 6
inches wide, but it's that bass box that's largeish.

I also have a set of full 5.1 PC speakers in my dining room that I make use
of along with MP3 players etc. for entertaining etc., but while they are the
full 5.1, they're honestly not as loud as the others by my PC desk.

I live in my house here in SA, where almost all of our real buildings are
concrete/bricks and mortar, so also have a solid floor, and, fortunately, I
live in a corner property house, so people don't seem to moan about my
music/sounds, drum playing, etc. etc. - LOL!

Hi Jacob,

It sounds like your computer speakers may be larger than mine. I don't
turn mine up too loud since I live in an apartment building. Plus the
building is built on a cement slab so it takes some to get that to vibrate
much. But hey some of the explosions etc in games are felt at my feet
since the sub woofer speaker is on the floor.

I used to run my computer out through my stereo with it's RTR speakers
with their 15 inch woofers. grin But they are not located for a good
stereo separation for my computer desk, so that doesn't work out so well
for game play were you need that.

[Audyssey] InclusivePlanet.com - possible game channel?

2010-01-22 Thread Jacob Kruger
I have just created my own InspectorGadget channel on inclusiveplanet.com,
and me and one of the guys involved there were talking about some form of
games/gaming 'channel'.

Anyway, see info about this place below.

The following is a short description taken off their about page:
---about---
inclusive planet is a platform that enables visually impaired readers from
across the world to connect and share accessible content. Lack of accessible
materials and content is a major problem amongst the visually impaired and
is a community-driven solution to resolve that precise problem. By using ,
users can create geographically, culturally and topically relevant
communities around accessible content and overcome the barriers they face.
---end of about---

Here's a link to the actual page for my inspectorGadget 'channel', which I
reckon is a

form of blogg, and I sort of plan to put up sort of reviews, possible
alternatives for certain types of gadgets, and mention other things/methods
I make use of for sort of day to day tasks:
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/group/449018

FWIW, when I talk about alternatives, things like Jim Kitchen's eggTimer
etc. is one of them...smile
