Thanks aprone, though I have a nasty feeling trans atlantic phone calls to
bavisoft could be rather expensive.

You might send the number to thomas ward if he'd considder phoning them in
his capacity as audeasy co list owner, and as a developer himself.

I have actually phoned those audio games developers in the Uk, I phoned
azabat software to get their demo cd so that I could write game reviews, and

phoned Gamevial just for general discussion of their web based games.

My next targit, is to see if i can eerbash some sense into the rnib and
convince them that there is more to audio games than azabat and their
talking crosswords and board games (which I rather think are somewhat
overpriced), and not all visually impared people are over the age of sixty.

Given that the rnib are intrinsically stupid and my 20 year long war to get
them to record a wider variety of books has not seen too much success, this
is probably a doomed enterprise, but I can at least try.

Oh and yes, I did first phone the rnib with a book request at the age of 7
for Douglas Hill's novel the caves of Klydor a sequal to exiles of colsec
which they'd recorded in 1979 (three years before I was born and ten years
before I phoned them).

they did finally! record the book in 2009. It'll be interesting to see if it

takes them another 20 years to do the last in the trilogy.

Beware the Grue!

Hi Kelly,
To be honest, in my opinion, source code is very scarce, few and far between

as far as audio games are concerned. The source code that generally is
available is coded in Visual Basic 6, most of that is either rather messy or

very simple and in my experience doesn't teach a lot of important concepts,
especially on major projects.
To give you an example, I have the VB6 source code to Danger City, Self
Destruct, Giftanum, Chopper Patrol, and of course my own games. However,
most of them games are demonstrating the same concepts, I.E. how to use
timers and simple sound panning. The really major ones that touch on more
important concepts like environments, sound panning based on the player's
position in relation to other characters and objects within the game world,
level mappings and AI's tend to be the more messy ones.
In my opinion the best resource for open source/example games are currently
those available on the BGT page and forums, and certainly if anybody needs
any BGT help I'm willing to help in whatever ways I can.
Regards,
Damien.

 Hi Tiffany,

 I agree with Dark. I think it's best to learn and experiment with a
 programming language, or anything for that matter, before starting to work

 on a major project. For a long time now, I've been interested in writing
 text adventure games (just for myself), but it took awhile before I found
 a language I liked to code in. With that in mind, I also think it's always

 good to look at as much source code as possible to see how an author
 programs something in a certain way.

 Hope this helps.

 Yours Sincerely,
 Kelly John Sapergia

It is from the same developer as smugglers 3 and 4 and tv manager 2.

Just after smugglers 3, niels baur released a game called empires and
dungeons. This was a mix of rpg and stratogy. you were a lord owning a
castle and had to defeat several other computer controlled lords by
conquering towns, fighting the other lords armies and eventually taking
their castle.

also though, the game had rpg elements. you had a character who levelled up,

could explore dungeons and have adventures, and (as you'll gather from the
post), find magic weapons.

the first empires and dungeons game was sadly not accessible at all, due to
on screen graphics and other things a screen reader couldn't deal with
(unlike in smugglers 3).

However, after including the compatibility mode in S4 to make the game
playable with a screen reader, hopefully a similar mode will be included in
ED 2, the sequal to the first game which is being developed at the moment
and which this message was about.

Hope this explains things.

Beware the Grue!

However, sinse the access features in tv manager two haven't made the game

so, i urge anyone who would be interested in the game to go and post

[Audyssey] score posting problem in pipe2 blast chamber

2010-12-18 Thread NIcol
Hi list
I experience a problem posting my score in pipe version2.
My final score for my most recent game on normal difficulty is 2784571
 I finished the game; i.e I killed the boss.
The only score on the scoreboard for pipe version 2 normal difficulty is
myself. 1 Nicol Oosthuizen, 2701180, level 16, South Africa
I wrote to bsc games support some time ago with a similar situation like
this where my score is higher than that of the number1 on the scoreboard.
They could not explain to me why I am not able to post my score, they only
said they will forward the problem to their technical division.
Has anybody experienced this?
To post my score is nothing major, I enjoy the game although I am not always
able to post my score.
I am just very curious why this happens.
If someone can explain this to me, its much appreciated.
Happy gaming.

2010-12-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ben,

Any time you learn something new like a programming language always
start out small before moving on to bigger projects. For example,
when I was taking C++ in college we didn't start out with something
like a calculator or similar app we started with a simple Hello
World program and went from there. We wrote hundreds of small
practice programs that demonstrated some aspect of the language before
pulling all that together to write something like a simple ATM
machine, calculator, sample Cash Register program, whatever. So
instead of thinking of some big complex game like a real time Star
Wars game or another Shades of Doom think about writing small practice
programs like Guess the Number or an Eight Ball program that
demonstrates some aspect of the language before working your way upt
to that end project. That's the only way you will ever learn to know
when or where to start.

I'll say this. I've been oon the internet for several years and have
shared my insightes with a lot of people. The most common problem I
find with people interested in programming is a distinct lack of
patients. They want to pick up a book like Teach Yourself C++ in 21
Days, and expectt to start writing something as complex as Shades of
Doom the next day. That's just unrealistic. There are so many aspects
of the language they need to master before they get from point A to
point B that it may mean months of practical general purpose
programming, and writing simple programs before they have enough skill
to even attempt at writing anything remotely like Shades of Doom. Even
though BGT shaves lots of time off programming games etc you still
have to spend some time writing simple programs before moving on to
bbigger more complex ones.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] TDV final battle and possible bug

2010-12-18 Thread Chad Fenton
I'm almost at my wit's end in the final battle. I've got Dark Blaze to
the point where the REO says he's been killed for the third time, one
time past where it's announced that his plane can repair in the air,
using mostly guns and almost all my missiles. The refueler is around 27
miles away, and I've saved my game as I've gotten closer to it.
However, I've noticed that if I saved the game where the refueler is 10
miles away, and then load the game to resume, and if I die and then
reload the game again, the refueler starts back at 27 miles away.
Perhaps this is designed to increase the challenge, but it's rather
annoying. To make matters worse, Dark Blaze is less than a mile from me
and I only have one cruise missile and guns. I'm almost ready to ask
for a cheat code, if one exists. I'd hate to start the mission
completely over at this point. Even with hitting Dark Blaze with a
cruise missile and guns for around twelve seconds, he still didn't go
down. I'm all for a challenge, but this is insane.

Re: [Audyssey] Programming Games was Re: Response From Bavisoft To MyInquiry

2010-12-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Hayden,

There is actually a huge difference in object oriented programming in
procedural programming. Unfortunately, this is going to be tough
explaining it in a way that gets the point across without getting too
technical, and I can't explain it without showing you a bit of code
for comparison. So bare with me.

In Procedural programming most of your functions, variables, etc will
be in the public/global scope. For example, at the top of your program
you might declare a number of global variables and then use those
variables in a function something like this.

// Declare global enemy variables
float g_enemyDirection = 0;
int g_enemyHealth = 0;
bool g_enemyKilled = false;
float g_enemyX = 0;
float g_enemyY = 0;
float g_enemyZ = 0;

// Declare global player variables
float g_playerDirection = 0;
int g_playerHealth = 0;
bool g_playerKilled = false;
float g_playerX = 0;
float g_playerY = 0;
float g_playerZ = 0;

// Name: StartGame (void).
// Description: Resets the global variables and
// starts the game.
void StartGame ()
{

// Initialize enemy
g_enemyDirection = 180;
g_enemyHealth = 100;
g_enemyKilled = false;
g_enemyX = 50;
g_enemyY = 1;
g_enemyZ = 75;

// Initialize player
g_playerDirection = 0;
g_playerHealth = 100;
g_playerKilled = false;
g_playerX = 50;
g_playerY = 1;
g_playerZ = 25;
}

What we basically did above is create several global enemy and player
variables and then initialized them in or StartGame() function or
procedure. This style of programming is called procedural programming
because instead of classifying these variables as belonging to a
specific type of person, place, or thing they are simply globally
added to the stack and used free style. For short programs this style
of programming is okay, but it is also very simplistic. There is a
more advanced and better way to design our program, and that is called
object oriented programming.

In object oriented programming we stop thinking of our enemy and
player as a set of global variables and start thinking of them as
specific objects. We begin thinking of our variables and functions as
members belonging to a type of object. In other words we begin
breaking our program down into specific people, places, and things. We
begin to organize both our variables and functions down as to
belonging to these people, places, and things and classifying them
that way. The advantage of doing it this way is we only need do it
once, and regardless how many times you use the class to create a new
object you will use the exact same functions and variables over and
over again. Here is a simple rewrite of the code above using oop.

// Declare a player class structure
// to declare our player type variables
class Player
{

public: // Public class members

float Direction;
int Health;
bool Killed;
float X;
float Y;
float z;
};

// Declare game player objects
Player g_enemy;
Player g_player;

// Name: StartGame (void).
// Description: Initializes the player objects
// and starts a new game.
void StartGame ()
{

// Initialize enemy objects
g_enemy.Direction = 180;
g_enemy.Health = 100;
g_enemy.Killed = false;
g_enemy.X = 50;
g_enemy.Y = 1;
g_enemy.Z = 75;

// Initialize player objects
g_player.Direction = 0;
g_player.Health = 100;
g_player.Killed = false;
g_player.X = 50;
g_player.Y = 1;
g_player.Z = 25;
}

So what is the big deal? Lots of things. For starts as you might have
noticed after I created the player class both the enemy and player
objects shared the same direction, health, killed, x, y, and z
variables. This is possible because when you declare a new object of
type Player it actually creates a new set of variables for that object
on the heap behind the scenes. This means you only have to declare
your variables only once and use them for every object of type Player
that exists in your program. This way you can easily create anything
from a single object of type Player to 100 objects of type Player. It
doesn't really matter because you created a class structure to handle
an unlimited number of game players. With procedural programming if
you want 100 game players you will have to create 100 identical global
variables for 100 players manually, or use a type of structure called
a struct which is something like a class. Which brings us to our
second advantage of object oriented programming.

With a struct it allows C/C++ procedural programmers a type of object
oriented programming, but it is still limited. With structs all of the
variables are public as I did in my sample class as above, and structs
can not be inherited or extended. Both are serious disadvantages that
object oriented programming resolves.

In object oriented programming class members can be either public,
protected, or private. This has huge advantages over a struct or
global variables used in procedural programming because you can set
the access level of a member function or

I've purchased and downloaded Papa Sangre, but am having difficulty
getting past the tutorial. One issue I noticed was that, upon launching

walking. Using my thumbs or any fingers for that matter, it seems like
I have to double tap to step with the left or right foot, even with
Voiceover switched off. I used Voiceover initially to see where the
icons were located, but it's not as easy as the tutorial makes sound
that by touching the bottom half of the left side and right side, you
can walk.

It actually is. Turn off voice over. Just tap left corner then right corner
then left and righ tand so on. I had my phone upside down at first, but once
I got the hang of it it was great. Just completed the game.

Subject: [Audyssey] Papa Sangre tutorial

I've purchased and downloaded Papa Sangre, but am having difficulty getting
past the tutorial. One issue I noticed was that, upon launching the game,
my point of view switched from portrait, my default, to landscape. I turned
the phone to match. My difficulty has been even walking. Using my thumbs
or any fingers for that matter, it seems like I have to double tap to step
with the left or right foot, even with Voiceover switched off. I used
Voiceover initially to see where the icons were located, but it's not as
easy as the tutorial makes sound that by touching the bottom half of the
left side and right side, you can walk.

 I've purchased and downloaded Papa Sangre, but am having difficulty
 getting past the tutorial. One issue I noticed was that, upon
 launching the game, my point of view switched from portrait, my
 default, to landscape. I turned the phone to match. My difficulty
 has been even walking. Using my thumbs or any fingers for that
 matter, it seems like I have to double tap to step with the left or
 right foot, even with Voiceover switched off. I used Voiceover
 initially to see where the icons were located, but it's not as easy as
 the tutorial makes sound that by touching the bottom half of the left
 side
 and right side, you can walk.

Comcast does, in fact, let you forward and use ports. Certain general ones
though are of course limited to certain services but I don't think that's a
comcast issue. If all else fails, DMZ your router and try again, see if it
works. If it does there's a port forwarding issue.

Cheers!

Cheers!

// Declare global enemy variables
float g_enemyDirection = 0;
int g_enemyHealth = 0;
bool g_enemyKilled = false;
float g_enemyX = 0;
float g_enemyY = 0;
float g_enemyZ = 0;

// Declare global player variables
float g_playerDirection = 0;
int g_playerHealth = 0;
bool g_playerKilled = false;
float g_playerX = 0;
float g_playerY = 0;
float g_playerZ = 0;

// Name: StartGame (void).
// Description: Resets the global variables and
// starts the game.
void StartGame ()
{

// Initialize enemy
g_enemyDirection = 180;
g_enemyHealth = 100;
g_enemyKilled = false;
g_enemyX = 50;
g_enemyY = 1;
g_enemyZ = 75;

// Initialize player
g_playerDirection = 0;
g_playerHealth = 100;
g_playerKilled = false;
g_playerX = 50;
g_playerY = 1;
g_playerZ = 25;
}

// to declare our player type variables
class Player
{

public: // Public class members

float Direction;
int Health;
bool Killed;
float X;
float Y;
float z;
};

// Declare game player objects
Player g_enemy;
Player g_player;

// Name: StartGame (void).
// Description: Initializes the player objects
// and starts a new game.
void StartGame ()
{

// Initialize enemy objects
g_enemy.Direction = 180;
g_enemy.Health = 100;
g_enemy.Killed = false;
g_enemy.X = 50;
g_enemy.Y = 1;
g_enemy.Z = 75;

// Initialize player objects
g_player.Direction = 0;
g_player.Health = 100;
g_player.Killed = false;
g_player.X = 50;
g_player.Y = 1;
g_player.Z = 25;
}

With a struct it allows C/C++ procedural programmers a type of object
oriented

Something of that equivalent on the computer would cost at least 10 times

Comcast does, in fact, let you forward and use ports. Certain general ones

a comcast issue. If all else fails, DMZ your router and try again, see if
it works. If it does there's a port forwarding issue.

Hi Muhammed,
Yes, that's a lot. Let me explain. You can buy a game like Aurifi for $1.99.
Something of that equivalent on the computer would cost at least 10 times
that. Now I've heard from someone that there isa program that llows access
to a kind of MicrosoftWord andExcel; that program is just under $5. So this
is a bit more than usual; aps for the I-products are remarkably cheep.
Still, I haven't completely thrownaway the idea of buying it.

Hayden

 considering the price of other iPhone games?

for those wondewring, despite the developer's warning sand despite the game
giving you an initial warning at startup it has no issues with the iPod

Comcast does, in fact, let you forward and use ports. Certain general ones
though are of course limited to certain services but I don't think that's
a comcast issue. If all else fails, DMZ your router and try again, see if
it works. If it does there's a port forwarding issue.

[Audyssey] some problems related to games in java

2010-12-18 Thread Hayden Presley
Hi Hi  List,

I'd like to report a problem I've been having; I'd like to see if any of you
have some tips as to how to resolve this. I first noticed this when I got
ScienceInvasion; the sound of the Cyclist just sounded weird; it wasn't
looping, there was a most definitely noticeable break from one loop to the
next. Then I heard Muhammed playing it, and it sounded right as rain. ThenI
tried Showdown. What do you know? Same problem. Just a few minutes ago I
tried Dark Destroyer; same problem. It would appear that only games written
in java are giving me this problem. Anyone have a possible solution to
this?

Best Regards,

Hayden

 Comcast does, in fact, let you forward and use ports. Certain general
 ones

 though are of course limited to certain services but I don't think
 that's
 a comcast issue. If all else fails, DMZ your router and try again, see
 if
 it works. If it does there's a port forwarding issue.

 Do you know what binaural sound is? The game is using a binaural 3d engine.
 It's one of the best audio games I've ever played! Especially for the I

 for those wondewring, despite the developer's warning sand despite the game
 giving you an initial warning at startup it has no issues with the iPod
 touch 3g. it's just they don't have a way to tell if it's the 8 gig model
 which does indeed have less memory, hence all the warnings. but for us
 voiceover users with touches it'll work just fine, and imho it's a worthwile
 purchase.

[Audyssey] Registration features of BGT

2010-12-18 Thread Philip Bennefall
Hi all,

The release of BGT 1.0 is drawing near, and I am currently working on the
registration functionality that will be available to game writers. I have
written an article on the subject which I was wondering if you could all give
me your opinions on, or at least those of you interested in game creation.
Smile.

The article can be found at:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5121962/Registration.txt

Your thoughts and feedback would be very much appreciated!

Kind regards,
