Re: [Audyssey] Best controller for fighting games on Xbox
Your best option would be the pdp pad then. I personally love playing with a ps3 controller, so if you could find a way to convert the ps3 controller to be usable by the xbox, you're out of luck with that option. - Original Message - From: Karl Belanger k...@belanger.net To: Audyssey discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, April 27, 2013 7:44 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Best controller for fighting games on Xbox Hi all, For those of you who play fighting games, what controller do you use? I've been using the stock Xbox 360 controller for a few days, and am rather unimpressed. I'm currently leaning toward the Versus pad from PDP, because it has great reviews, and is on clearance for cheap. I've also been looking at the Microsoft controller with transforming D-pad, but that one's a bit on the pricey side right now, plus I don't really need the charge and play kit it comes with. I'm at a bit of a double disadvantage because I'm used to playing street fighter with a keyboard, so any controller feels clunky to a degree. Any controller recommendations or other tips in this area would be greatly appreciated. Re: [Audyssey] Ping-Pong Samurai help.
Sorry, thought I explained it in the review. You have to hold the phone with the home button to the right. voiceover will tell you that the home button is to the left, but you have to hold it the opposite way. Turn off VO and start by touching the screen. Horizontal touch doesn't matter. It's all about the vertical. The idea is to touch the screen wherever you hear the tone. The starting tone is halfway between the highest and lowest tones, so you have to touch the screen halfway up. Then just follow the tone with your finger. The higher it goes, the higher your finger goes. It takes a lot of practice to win even a single game, but that's what I like about it. It's a good little challenge, although the continuous tone gets annoying after a while. Re: [Audyssey] Panning stereo sounds, was New Version of Soundscape Explorer
I had actually thought of switching to DX7 for that exact reason. The marching band in mono doesn't sound like much, even with a 3d effect added. It just sounds like a good radio playing the sound. There's no real depth. Then i thought about what i'd lose if I went to DX7. I wouldn't be able to add special effects, such as reverb, chorus, echo and the like. I'd also have to rewrite the whole direct input section. Since I didn't like either of those two ideas, I chose to simply split the stereo sound into two identical wave files, a left mono sound and a right one, and play them simultaneously. If you mess with Soundscape, you'll notice that the marching band is in stereo, just like with DX7--but it's really just two wave files playing. This is all well and good except for two things. First, the waste of CPU resources. This can be negated by checking the player's distance from the object. The sound of the right channel could be stopped until the player is a certain distance from the object. Then, you get the play position of the first file, play the second starting at that position, and move the sounds over to the minimum width and maximum width. I'm not sure how all this would sound, and right now it's purely theoretical. I do intend to give it a go eventually. The other, and more serious problem in our time, since we have a lot more CPU resources than ever, is the doppler problem. With doppler turned on, one of the stereo files is sure to get out of sync with the other, and all you have left is an echo effect. I suppose that in the main program loop I could always get the position of the left channel and reset the right channel accordingly, but I'm still hoping to find a good alternative. Re: [Audyssey] Panning stereo sounds, was New Version of Soundscape Explorer
Hi Ken, I tried something like that with the Sarah game update. I had 2 mono files of crickets chirping to simulate an open window. If I put them at the same location however they sounded like putting both stereo speakers together, no separation. I had to separate the left and right channel mono sound by a ten foot cell before getting real stereo from two mono sources. However this was a static object and not a moving one so with a marching band you would need four mono sounds, front back and left and right to simulate stereo on a moving object, and the location of each would have to be adjusted as the band moved on the map to keep the ten foot spacing between the band object and the four sound locations. However, you can hear the demo at this link as well: http://dracoent.com/audio/ChangeReaction.mp3 Note that the TTS voice in the audio demo is a Mac voice. The game is identical, but it will use whatever TTS voices you have set on your machine. On Apr 29, 2013, at 9:06 AM, Sarah Haake ti...@gmx.net wrote: Hi, great that it's finally out! Re: [Audyssey] Panning stereo sounds, was New Version of Soundscape Explorer
Hi Ken, It sounds to me like what you need here is XAudio2. XAudio2 was designed to handle issues precisely like this situation without wasting CPU power or memory in the process. What you would do in XAudio2 to resolve this particular problem is declare a source voice for the marching band, that is kind of like the DirectSound SecondaryBuffer, and then you would pass the source voice to one ore more submix voices. What makes XAudio2 superior to DirectSound in this situation is you can independently control the volumes for each channel for front left, rear left, front right, rear right, and center speakers independently from each other all using the same source voice. So if you want to have a decent stereo sound while the player is facing the marching band you can make the center, front left, and front right volumes equal giving it a stereo type effect. As the player moves into and passed the band you can slowly increase the volume of the rear speakers while reducing the volume to the front and center speakers. So from a purely technical point of view I don't see any good reason to go back to DirectX 7. XAudio2 which is the new API for 9, 10, and11 is far superior when it comes to 3d audio than DirectSound, and I think would do what you want regarding something that sounds like a stereo sound without actually using stereo sounds or wasting memory etc needlessly. Cheers! On 4/29/13, Ken The PionEar kenwdow...@me.com wrote: I had actually thought of switching to DX7 for that exact reason. [Audyssey] My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Hi, Since I enjoy playing the original Change Reaction, I was very excited about this new version of the game, and immediately bought it upon reading the announcement on Draconis's Twitter feed. Actually, I first downloaded the file from their website and installed it after first removing version 1, and discovered, to my surprise, that there's no playable demo! I know there's an audio demo on the site, but I couldn't get it to play using their player, which I believe is Java-based. (I personally don't know why developers have to use these players on their sites. I think it's better to just link to an MP3 file so the visitor can listen to it in their favorite player.) Purchasing and registering the game was simple, but I noticed that the information displayed on the screen when you're presented with the registration dialog wasn't spoken automatically by JFW, or even a TTS engine like it was in the first version. I had to use the JAWS cursor to read it. After getting into the game, I listened to most of the tutorials for the various game types. I personally would've prefered a manual like the previous version had, but the Learn to Play option isn't bad, though I noticed that if you move back a page with the Left Arrow, for example, the speech tends to read something else, or at least doesn't seem to skip to that section right away. Now we come to gameplay, and this is where I'm really having problems. (I should mention that I'm playing this game using Windows XP.) So far, I've just played, or rather tried to play, the Classic mode. Either I'm so used to version 1's gameplay, or I'm not doing something right in version 2, but there are times things don't seem to work propperly. In particular, I've noticed that speech doesn't get interrupted when quickly pressing the Left and Right arrow keys, like in version 1. There are also times when I don't get any speech at all for awhile, or else I'll be on a coin, but the previous one isn't read out. As well, I might press Space when I'm on a Penny, for example, which may be the coin I have to match, and nothing appears to happen. No laughing noise or anything! The first time I started noticing all this behavior, I thought my keyboard was acting up, even though I had unloaded my screen reader completely. I've even noticed that the sound you hear when a lit bomb explodes doesn't play half the time. I might be on a bomb, and then I hear the scream, but no proceeding explosion. In conclusion, Change Reaction 2 might be a good game, but so far I'm beginning to think I should've stuck with version 1 until these bugs were squashed. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Hi Kelly, What are your system specs? The site calls for a 1.9 ghz processor with 1 gb of ram. I just played version 2 on a 2.3 GHZ computer with 4 gb of ram and noticed none of the issues you described with gameplay, except a little sapi sluggishness in the tutorial. Thanks. Kelly, Looks like you may be having a problem that occurs with some audio devices on Windows XP. We have a knowledge base article on our site that I suspect will solve your problems. Try this out and let us know if this helps: http://help.dracoent.com/knowledgebase.php?article=15 For the record, the coins are always read in this version. Re: [Audyssey] Speed of getting keys for Change Reaction?
Keys are automatically generated and emailed. The person who bought the game should check their spam or junk folders, as keys are sometimes mis-marked as spam. Submit a ticket at the help desk to contact us if you don't have your key, and make sure you let us know who ordered the game, their email address, and approximate date of purchase to speed up the process. [Audyssey] Contacting us and ChangeReaction 2 for WIndows
Hello all, Since some folks seem to be confused, we just wanted to send another message about contacting us. We have a very easy to use Help Desk setup at http://dracoent.com where you can submit support tickets, and where we are adding knowledge base articles as fast as we can regarding common problems or questions. You can check the KB first for a quick answer to something, then you can submit a ticket if you don't find the answer. It is impossible to test for every possible combination of Windows hardware and software, so there are bound to be a few problems on specific configurations. We need you to report it if you do have problems, so we can try to correct or find workarounds for issues that occur under certain circumstances. ChangeReaction 2 was tested on operating systems from XP to Win7, on a variety of different kinds of hardware, not to mention on Mac OS X as well, which is significant since we are using nearly all the same code for both platforms. Thanks all. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Hi, First, thanks to Draconis for the tip on changing sound cards. Turns out it was my RealTech card that was causing the trouble. After I chose my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card, the game played flawlessly, and I got $29.36 in the first game! Before reading the tip though, I thought it might be my computer's memory, but I've got 1.99 GHZ of RAM, and am running the game on a 2.39 GHZ processor. I take back what I said before about this version, it's a lot of fun to play! Thanks again. [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
Hi all, I am slowly but surely nearing the finish line for my current game project, and before I release it I would like to ask the community at large some questions. Your input will greatly help me when deciding what to spend time on before release. Below are four questions that I would very much appreciate your answers to: 1. Would you like the ability to order the game on CD? This would cost something like 10 dollars extra including worldwide shipping. 2. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Is something like 300 MB too large? 3. In what format would you prefer to have the manual? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? 4. If the game contained cheat codes and you had to beat it in order to unlock them, would you want the ability to buy them for something like 5 dollars without having to earn them? This applies to other unlockable content, as well. I do not have a set release date for the game yet, but it will be available in the not too distant future. The game that I am refering to is not Perilous Hearts, but is actually something even larger and, in my opinion, far superior. The state of Perilous Hearts is currently not 100% certain, but I am confident that you'll enjoy this game just as much and hopefully a whole lot more. I cannot give any definite information about the game at present, except that it is a mix between arcade and adventure with a boatload of action thrown on top. Thanks in advance for reading, and taking the time to respond to my questions! As for ordering the game on CD I don't see the need for that. As for cheat codes I like having to beat the game in order to get them. As for the download size I have a fairly fast connection somost downloads don't take very long. I'm looking forward to this game but I also hope to see PH in the future since we got that concept demo. Would you like the ability to order the game on CD? This would cost something like 10 dollars extra including worldwide shipping. No, not really. It would take the CD for ever to arrive, so getting the game via download is much better... and faster. 2. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Is something like 300 MB too large? Not at all. Many audio games are this large (like papa sangre), some are even bigger (the inquisitor is about 600MB). Plus, a lot of other stuff is getting this big like the new voices, wheather vocalizer, ivona or what ever are into the 2 or 300's. Most mainstream games are this big as well (take the injustice demo, which offers only a very, very small ammmount of content from the game, which is 500MB). The only time I could see this being a problem is for people on mobile internet which more often than not is capped, but personally I always wait until I come back home to download this large files. 3. In what format would you prefer to have the manual? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? Don't really have a prefrence there, either way is fine. 4. If the game contained cheat codes and you had to beat it in order to unlock them, would you want the ability to buy them for something like 5 dollars without having to earn them? This applies to other unlockable content, as well. I'd probably just try and unlock everything myself... that said I do know people that might end up buying it instead. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Is something like 300 MB too large? no it would not be to large 3. In what format would you prefer to have the manual? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? both cause then you can have a choice how to read manual 4. If the game contained cheat codes and you had to beat it in order to unlock them, would you want the ability to buy them for something like 5 dollars without having to earn them? This applies to other unlockable content, as well. well if the game had earnable cheat codes it would be a good idea to mention that in documentation. however if option to buy the codes was offered it would defeat the motivation for playing to get them:) - Original Message - From: Philip Bennefall phi...@blastbay.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 2:19 PM Subject: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions Hi all, I am slowly but surely nearing the finish line for my current game project, and before I release it I would like to ask the community at large some questions. Hi Philip, Here are my answers to the questions: 1. no, cd is not necessary for me. 2. 300 mb is fine, quality over size, I say. 3. text is good for the manual. 4. cheat codes might be nice to have bought, as I sometimes like playing with them just for the heck of it, and I almost never beat any games just 'cuz I don't play them enough :P. Looking forward to the game! -Michael. -Original Message- From: Philip Bennefall Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 2:19 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions Hi all, I am slowly but surely nearing the finish line for my current game project, and before I release it I would like to ask the community at large some questions. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? -Answer: Text format- the audio format is optional for me since I like to have a document on the side I can check whenever I wish. 4. If the game contained cheat codes and you had to beat it in order to unlock them, would you want the ability to buy them for something like 5 dollars without having to earn them? 1. Would you like the ability to order the game on CD? This would cost something like 10 dollars extra including worldwide shipping. GB: not at all. Download only. 2. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Is something like 300 MB too large? GB: no, 300 MB is downloadable within minute. Large, to me, it would be something over 4 GB. 3. In what format would you prefer to have the manual? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? GB: in text format, especially in HTML with all the titles, capter, section and subsections correctly headed. Bye and have a good job. Re: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
Hi Philip, I'd personally not want to buy the game on cd and have to pay the extra. I've no clue about file sizes, so long as it fits and runs on my computer that's all I'm worried about lol. Let it leave room for other stuff too. :) The instructions I feel would be better done both ways, if possible, to keep everyone happy, or maybe even a small audio tutorial like the ones bsc games did for their products, and the full readme done in text format. As for cheat codes, no, don't make them availible for extra cash, that could lead to people buying them and spreading them around. Make them unlockibles lol. Or on 2nd thoughts, I'll get back to you on that one once I've played the game lol. Finally, no pressure, but do you think it'll come out in July, I only ask because it'd make a great birthday present for me. -Original Message- From: Philip Bennefall Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 8:19 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions Hi all, I am slowly but surely nearing the finish line for my current game project, and before I release it I would like to ask the community at large some questions. Hi Here's my ancers to those questions. 1. Would you like the ability to order the game on CD? This would cost something like 10 dollars extra including worldwide shipping. I prefer to download the game. 2. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Is something like 300 MB too large? no a game that is 300 mb is not large. I am able to download 300 mb just fine. 3. In what format would you prefer to have the manual? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? I would prefer to have both options since that way wile playing if I want to go and check something I wouldn't have to exit the game find the txt file and read it. 4. If the game contained cheat codes and you had to beat it in order to unlock them, would you want the ability to buy them for something like 5 dollars without having to earn them? This applies to other unlock content, as well. I would like this option but only after playing the game for a long time and the only time I would use the cheat coads is if I was really really stuck on a level. I like to play a game with out cheat coads and see how I can do but if I amr eally really stuck then the cheet coads would come in handy. Re: [Audyssey] My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Glad you have it working, Kelly. On an aside, we are not using Java for the audio player, just HTML. There is a problem with some Firefox configurations, and with old versions of Internet Explorer, since IE is horrible about standards and keeping up with the times. We're working on fixing the Firefox issue, but not much we can do for old versions of IE. The reason that many places don't use MP3 downloads much any more is because, for most, they are inconvenient. I, personally, hate sites that still make me download an MP3 that I just want to listen to in the browser. Imagine if YouTube did this for videos! The VI community, in general, is one of the last groups to move, fighting all along the way, with technology as it changes. This is a partial reason why we see issues like the recent BSC situation with games that become obsolete. At some point, we have to draw a line in the sand and say, we just can't support those who choose to lag behind. That being said, we're doing everything we can to support as wide a group as possible. We wanted to drop XP support with the new game engine, but decided not to for now. However, we won't hang on to it forever. We've gotten emails from those upset we're not supporting Windows 98 anymore. We just can't. We'll continue to do our best to make as many gamers happy as we can. Hi Philip Answering the questions you posed. Myself I'm in favour of just a download, but some folks might like to have a backup version. 2 This basically relates to the previous question but with a good connection 300 is easy enough. 3. I'd say txt or html for the ability to quickly find particular points like key commands, scoring and such. 4. Cheat codes, I'd rather unlock them through gameplay. Other folks might want them from the beginning so I'd say offer it as an option. Just my thoughts. And when I read this I thought it was about PH, looking forward to seeing what you've created! Re: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
Answers follow their question: 1. Would you like the ability to order the game on CD? This would cost something like 10 dollars extra including worldwide shipping. Response: I would prefer downloading. A CD would only add expense and could be damaged in shipping as well as increase production cost. 2. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Is something like 300 MB too large? Response: Given the size of a lot of current games, I don't think this should be a problem. 3. In what format would you prefer to have the manual? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? Response: I would prefer both, as browsing the manual is occasionally helpful with specific problems, while the other method is also entertainingly helpful. 4. If the game contained cheat codes and you had to beat it in order to unlock them, would you want the ability to buy them for something like 5 dollars without having to earn them? This applies to other unlockable content, as well. Response: I would prefer not being able to buy them. I think we should have to earn them through skill. This increases replay value as well. Re: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
Salutations Philip. Awesome to hear that you've got yet another project on the way. Below are my answers to your project survey: 1. Game on CD: With the proliferation of broadband access methods to the Internet, I sincerely believe that the era of physical media for content has gone by the wayside. Rarely is it necessary to delivery content on such platforms anymore; they were mostly used in the past to subvert the tedium of downloading via cumbersome download methods such as low-grade DSL or dial-up. While I can see the merit of having a physical copy of a product, most of these products require a license key of some sort to unlock them, requiring the original software distributor to keep records of some form. By that reasoning, a distributor may as well just keep records of purchasers (perhaps via an account system), and allow people to redownload and reauthorize purchased applications. In conclusion, I personally believe that physical media is no longer necessary for content below 4 GB, since even a 2 GB file can be downloaded much more quickly than it can be shipped. This also relieves a lot of the burden from the developer, since they no longer have to maintain a physical storehouse or master copy of the physical content to duplicate. I believe an online download and management system would be sufficient for the majority of customers. 2. Content Size: From my personal experience working on Swamp, the size of the content is less of an issue now than it has been in the past. What with the aforementioned higher speed Internet access methods and the plethora of large hard drives available to the average consumer, the size of a game download becomes fairly inconsequential. Indeed, since many mainstream games often exceed the 1 GB limit by a fairly significant margin, I believe that even 300 MB would be fairly light-weight for a well-developed and executed game. Swamp itself has jumped from being 45 MB in its beginnings to now being roughly 400 MB, and people still download it without issue. That being the case, I doubt size limitations should be of much concern to you or any other developer in your field of expertise. 3. Documentation Format: While I can understand and appreciate the desire for an audio manual, I don't personally feel that it's so important as to invest the time and resources for such a production. there is scarcely much of a difference between digesting material via text form than via audio narration, particularly with people who are already accessing their computers via speech synthesis methods. I'd rather lessen the demands on you the developer and not require you to produce such a demanding accompanying project to go with the main content, especially if that same content could be delivered in a much smaller, much more quickly accessible, and much more easily organizable package such as in an HTML, CHM, or indeed text file. 4. Purchasable Unlockables. I actually can agree with this particular marketing method. Proof is in the Sony and other online gaming stores; people are willing to buy upgrades, packages, and unlockables for their games, if the price is done correctly. I, for example, wouldn't expect to pay 10 dollars for unlockables, if the initial price of the product was, say, 20 to 25 dollars, since that 10 dollars is roughly one half to one third the price of the original product. Furthermore, if such unlockables are available as rewards for effort, there should be no negatives to offering such an unlocking service; you'd be allowing two methods to achieve the same ends. In short, I approve of such a marketing model for a product, and it does ensure that your initial selling point is not the only method of profit. Re: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
Hi, Here are my answers. 1. Would you like the ability to order the game on CD? This would cost something like 10 dollars extra including worldwide shipping. No, that won't be necessary. Very few games are sold on CD nowadays. 2. How much does the size of the game matter when it comes to the downloadable version? Is something like 300 MB too large? Not at all. If a game is large, it probably means that it's high quality, at least in terms of audio games. I'm on a DSL connection, but I wouldn't mind at all having to wait a little extra time to get a quality game to play. 3. In what format would you prefer to have the manual? Narrated inside the game, available in text format, or both? I would like text. I retain information more easily that way, and I prefer to read a text manual before beginning a game. 4. If the game contained cheat codes and you had to beat it in order to unlock them, would you want the ability to buy them for something like 5 dollars without having to earn them? This applies to other unlockable content, as well. If we're talking other unlockable content, such as expansion packs or bonus levels, I think $5 is more than a reasonable price. however, just for cheat codes, I'd say no. part of the fun, for me at least, is trying to beat the game just so I can get access to those codes. Hi. 1. No. 2. Doesn't matter. 3. I'd use text but both would probably be better. 4. Playing to unlock is fine. However, would there be a way to save them? If my computer died, I'd want to have the option to play your game on my new computer with any items I already unlocked. I look forward to playing. Re: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
I would say that download size shouldn't be any kind of an issue, especially if the game is that good. I don't see a reason not to make it available on cd, though I'm skeptical as to how many orders you'd get if it were downloadable. I would personally really like to see a text manual, I vastly prefer browsing through it to listening to an audio version. - Original Message - From: Philip Bennefall phi...@blastbay.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Date sent: Mon, 29 Apr 2013 21:19:46 +0200 Subject: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions Hi all, I am slowly but surely nearing the finish line for my current game project, and before I release it I would like to ask the community at large some questions. [Audyssey] Playing MP3 files in a browser Was: My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Hi, just a quick note about playing MP3 files in a browser. The difference to Youtube videos is, that I can see how long a video is, I can pause and resume the playback and fast forward it, etc. Usually when a MP3 starts playing in Firefox, I just get a blank page and can just sit there and listen to the file, hoping it doesn't last too long for my time right now. Seeing this, I find it much more convenient to just download the file and play it in my own player, so that I have some kind of control over the playback and the time I spend with it. This of course would be something different if sites which play files directly in a browser would provide a reasonable player, just like Youtube does. Re: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
Hi Philip. Sounds fun, here are my answers to your questions: 1: the only time I can see myself using cd ordering is if there was something you got on the cd that you didn't get with the downloadable version. One graphical indi game I ordered for instance had no music in the downloadable version, but music on cd in the cd version hence why I ordered that. If however the content were exactly the same, I'd choose download every time hands down. No physical disks to keep, easy to backup, I get it immediately etc. All things being equal, i don't really see the need for cd ordering myself. 2: size of the download file doesn't matter a bit to me. I've just upgraded to a bdsl fiberoptic connection at my flat, so I have uba fast speed there anyway, but even in other places I never mind waiting, heck I recently downloaded one of the darker projects free audio dramas on a free 56 kbps connection I was forced to use. It was about 300 mb and took two hours, but I just let it run. 3: I personally like reading manuals before I play the game, or alternately flicking out of the game to check stuff in the manual (supernova can be flicked on and off), therefore I tend to prefer text copies of manuals, particularly since often in game manuals don't have the same review commands as a screen reader if say I wanted to view a table of information slowly line by line, or read the hole thing start to finish, or check a specific fact by hitting ctrl f and finding a word. In game tutorials that play at specific points, or help messages for set aspects of the game can be useful as an on the spot guide, but for an entire manual, especially in a complex game, I do like a text copy to brouse as I want. 4: I tend to like earning unlockables in game since it gives me something to try for, I would not however be beyond paying for some special extra premium content to change the game if it were available to buy, indeed I've done this in brouser games, this is the reason I bought the addon for smugglers 3 which added the side quests, extra ship content etc, and if a similar addon came out for smugglers 5 I'd pay for it too. Indeed, I always think this is a nice way for a dev to get more out of their game by selling extra content, such as extra levels, situations or characters for an existing one at a reduced price, and for players to get more to play out of a single game if they wish. If however content were also unlockable, odds ae I'd prefer to unlock it myself, or at the least try to since that gives me a challenge in the game. I personally for example loved getting the Q9 cheat codes for completing the game and likely would only have considdered buying them if there was absolutely no other way to get them. Re: [Audyssey] News from Blastbay Studios, and a call for opinions
Hi, great to hear that something is on the way, this sounds really cool. Here are my answers to your questions: 1. I personally don't need a CD. If I wanted to backup the file, I could just as easily create a CD with the setup file myself. Besides, it would take ages to get to me due to distance. Download is just so much quicker. 2. 300 MB is perfectly fine, I often download files which are a lot bigger than that. I gladly take better sound quality for a larger file. 3. For the manual it would be great to have both HTML and a kind of audio tutorial with example sounds etc. This way, everyone can use the prefered method and I myself get a new game better when I have an audio example. On the other side though, I like to have a list of keystrokes which I can look up in a text file. 4. I don't think it should be possible to buy cheats, maybe just expansions for the game which may come later. As long as the game gives some kind of hint what I have to do to get the cheats or unlockables, I'm perfectly fine with getting these things by playing the game. I'm really looking forward to this new project, and thanks for letting us give our input on things beforehand. *smiles* Best regards Sarah --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Playing MP3 files in a browser Was: My First Impressions of Change Reaction 2 for Windows
Hi Sarah, Thanks for your note. We could actually very easily offer the same kind of playback controls in the browser as YouTube does for MP3's, as that kind of control is now standard in HTML5. However, it becomes very difficult to do so and support older browsers, which we are stuck doing since so many people choose to use older ones. It's a trade-off, as so many things are. This is also one of many reasons why we're releasing for Mac first and Windows second now. Mac users tend to stay up-to-date, because it is very easy, and very inexpensive, to do so, compared to Windows. It is getting more and more difficult all the time to support Windows users, especially the more fragmented the Windows base becomes. We only launched our new site last week, so we'll try to refine things like this to accommodate as many users as we can. We really do appreciate the feedback! Seeing this, I find it much more convenient to just download the file and play it in my own player, so that I have some kind of control over the playback and the time I spend with it. This of course would be something different if sites which play files directly in a browser would provide a reasonable player, just like Youtube does. Re: [Audyssey] ChangeReaction 2 -- High Scores
Don't feel too bad, Charles. I think my best Classic score is around $100. *grin* I am the proud owner of the $479.22 score on PayDay, though, and I don't think anyone has topped that yet. [Audyssey] Change reaction podcast?
Hi. I was wondering if someone would considder creating a podcast about change reaction explaining some of the game and showing some of the different modes. While I understand the reason for their not bieng a demo, with an arcade game such as this it is difficult for me to evaluate whether or not I wish to buy the game without playing it first. With rpgs, adventure games and such like I tend to be willing to take chances, but with arcade style games I've noticed myself that it depends heavily upon the design, soundscape etc, indeed I have recently found that my interest in arcade style games is not what it used to be mostly because there are now far more adventure and rpg games which are more my sort of thing that I can spend my time on. I would however like to give this game a chance since I know what work has gone into it's developement, therefore if anyone is inclined to reccord a review discussing the game that would be great. Re: [Audyssey] Change reaction podcast?
Several have been done for the Mac version, which is essentially identical to the Windows version. The only significant differences are the need to register the game on Windows, and that it will use whatever TTS voice is the system default on your Windows machine. One of these podcasts was done by Vision Australia for the AppleVis website, and is available here: http://www.applevis.com/podcast/episodes/changereaction-classic-audio-puzzle-game-comes-mac If I recall correctly, they only demo the Classic game, not the two variations, but I could be mistaken. Re: [Audyssey] Change reaction podcast?
We are working on a solution to the demo problem, but it won't be ready for a while yet. The difference in the mindset between Mac and Windows users on this point is rather fascinating. We opted for a much lower price, and not having an unlockable demo, similar to the iOS model. I still find it surprising that, we have heard nothing about the lower-price, and much about the lack of a demo, from Windows users. Re: [Audyssey] Change reaction podcast?
Hi Josh. Myself, I understand the reasons for not having a demo, however I would therefore like as much info as possible to help me make up my mind regarding the game. This is partly for purely personal reasons. I have noticed recently that my interest in arcade games has not been what it was. Take super egg hunt from Lworks. it's a very well designed game, with unlockables, scores, many different modes etc, however after trying the demo I just felt it wasn't what I wanted to play. This isn't a reflection upon Liam's work, it's simply the fact that now there are more complex rpg and adventure games out there, I generally feel more inclined to spend my time playing those than an arcade title. action/Adventure games I'd likely hazard money on demo or no demo. I did this with King of Dragon pass on the Iphone, not to mention papasangre, and haven't been disappointed, and will likely buy The Inquisitor at some stage, however thus far the closest thing to an arcade title I have on my Iphone is sixth sense, and I possibly wouldn't have got that if it weren't free, (though I did contribute a pound for the in game weapons because I liked the game once I had played it and wanted to support the devs). i also remember that when trying the previous versions, change reaction wasn't a game I took to particularly the way I did the Pinball titles (which I'm very fond of), dynaman or Alien outback, thus meaning I would like to know a little more about the new version. I would certainly agree that having to spend six pounds rather than the 18 or so I might have previously is a plus point, and likely will factor into my decision to buy the game, however equally lack of a demo is another factor as well, indeed that is the same reason I do not! buy arcade games for ios as I said. Re: [Audyssey] Change reaction podcast?
Hi Dark, Well, besides the issue of arcade games I seem to recall one of your issues with the game had to do with the coins themselves. It still uses American coins like pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, etc and if you are still going to take issue with the coins then perhaps you should consider skipping this one. :D Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Change reaction podcast?
Hi Josh, Personally, I think what you are doing is more than fair. The price of the game is fairly priced for a title like Change Reaction, and really is about what I would spend for an arcade game like this. I wouldn't pay $20 for a game like this but I am sure I can come up with $9 demo or no demo. The audio demo you posted is good enough to give a basic idea of the game in action, and I think I would be willing to risk $9 on a game. As you say though the attitudes of Windows users is most interesting. I know that many shareware and independent game developers offer demos, but that is not generally true for the entire game industry. I can remember back in the 80's and 90's buying Nintendo games that cost $40 or so with no demo and perhaps nothing more than a recommendation from a friend or classmate that such and such game was good. Even today when my wife and I buy games for our Wii some times we throw down $19 on a game or games based on nothing more than the description of the game on the box. So $9 is beyond fair in retrospect. Cheers! On 4/29/13, Draconis i...@dracoent.com wrote: We are working on a solution to the demo problem, but it won't be ready for a while yet. Re: [Audyssey] Change reaction podcast?
Hi tom. I'm aware of that, however again this is why I want more information on the game and why I'd play a demo if there was one, since while i wasn't keen on the american coins, mostly because they have no particular meaning or validity to me, I'm quite prepared to give the game the bennifit of the doubt and see what it's like on it's own merrits since that is still fundamentally an aesthetic point and it is possible if the gameplay and design were good enough it wouldn't ultimately matter. This however is again why a demo would be nice, since frequently I've tried demos for games that I wouldn't normally and found them to be quite astounding, railracer being a prime example. Since there isn't a demo, I will listen to podcasts and other material and make as much of a judgement as I can based on those. beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Chain Reaction
Hi Nicole, Let's be clear on this point. Steeling is by definition taking something without paying for it or taking something that does not belong to you. Just because you can't physically pick it up and take it does not mean you can't steel it. There are multiple forms of steeling. For example, if a game developer has an audio game for sale for $20 and you get it from someone else for free you have stolen it. The reason is that developer has spent time working on that game, has probably paid for sounds and music, and perhaps has paid a voice actor or actress to voice various characters in the game. Therefore that developer should be financially compensated for his/her time, the money spent on development, etc. When you just take a game for free without paying for it you in effect steel both their time and labor without properly paying for them. You can also steel ideas. The reason copyright laws exist is to protect people's rights to what are known as intellectual property rights. I.E. their ideas. You can't just read a good book, watch a movie, or whatever and use those characters etc in your own product and sell it because that would be steeling that person's ideas. Does that make sense? Bottom line, it is pretty simple. If you don't pay for it and it doesn't belong to you then you have stolen it. It doesn't matter if it is an idea, a piece of software, or something physical like a DVD or CD steeling is steeling. It is for that reason if anyone, and I mean anyone, is caught pirating a game on this list they will not only be moderated but banned from this list forever. Keep that in mind before casually asking someone to Dropbox a game to you because that will not be allowed. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Chain Reaction
Hi Dark, Agreed. I just issued such a stern warning in my last post, and frankly I hate insensitive and blatant remarks like those Nicole gave. Just because she or someone else doesn't have the money for a game doesn't give her or anyone else the right to just take it without paying for it. That's pretty insensitive and to do it on a list like this of all places is a good way to get herself banned from the community. Most decent people have zero toleration for piracy, and she could find herself being alienated by other gamers for that reason. I remember many years ago on the Zone BBS someone named Kyle casually got on the forum and asked for a crack for Super Liam. The general reaction wasn't what he was expecting. Everyone basically chewed him out, put him down, and he got the equal of virtual tomatoes thrown at him. By the time everything was all said and done he was very sorry he opened that thread, and I think was embarrassed by all the negative comments thrown at him. So it is just an example of how angry decent paying customers get when these pirates come out asking for cracks, product keys, or free downloads for a commercial game. Cheers! As to game piracy nicole, well if this was audiogames.net you'd get one stern warning for a comment like that then on a second offence be banned. Telling someone who has just spent several months making a game well it's okay for me to steal it then is not only very insensative but also counter productive to the community, and people who cannot support developers don't deserve to be part of the community. If you can't afford the game, save your money until you can. Beware the grue!
