Powerbasic produces executables that are extremely small, and have no external dll requirements, and run on all versions of windows from 95 up to 10. Jim's games definitely require external dlls, and sometimes, even need extra libs installed. I'm pretty sure it was visual basic used for their development, not powerbasic, but since I don't play those games, I could be wrong, but regardless, powerbasic has a free classic version of it's compiler available at it's web site, anyone can download the version 9 gui compiler, and version 5 commandline compiler for free, and I strongly urge anyone looking to write windows programs to do so, since there's no other compiler in the industry that produces tighter executables. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games.
If I remember correctly, those games were written using powerbasic. I don't know the status of that development platform nor do I know if it's possible to convert the source code to another basic dialect so those could be compiled. I asked Jim Kitchen what he had used to compile those games while he was still alive and that's what I was told. More specifically I remember him mentioning powerbasic 7. Hope this helps. Re: [Audyssey] The old text game known as adventure or colossal cave
Any of these games can be made easier if you know how to make a mapping deck. A mapping deck starts out with a card documenting the entrance room and its exits. That card gets a number on it too. Each exit on that card gets a number too. So the card number is unique and all exit numbers are unique. So card 1 which would be the entrance room might have hypothetically four exits into other parts of the game say north south east and west. Each of those exits would get a number say from 2-5. Then move through each exit and document the room and put its card number on each of those other cards. Then it's a good idea to put a band around the deck or put the deck in a bag. If useful to document other features of rooms you may need to use 4x6 or 5x8 cards if doing it in braille. Why to use cards and decks and not a single sheet of paper is cards can be added to decks no problem but a single sheet of paper can run out very quickly. I hope this helps. This also means first few times environments get entered and searched you do exploration missions then once you have the lay of the land documented you'll know where to go and what to do so then go in to actually get the quest done or win the game. If you get the right version, yes. There's a thousand point version which was the last expansion of the original game and I enjoyed that one most of all. When I downloaded it I got it off compuserve when compuserve was still a useable place to go. Compuserve is gone as is delphi.com and genie.com too. [Audyssey] alteraeon interesting discovery
I was in the stone dragon earlier today and killed several ochre jellies. Searching corpses got me a silver shield on the first corpse and shabby mail on the third corpse. The second corpse offered up a strange rod I couldn't take because I couldn't carry it at the time. My guess is that was a key to the coffin east of the ampitheater which is why I couldn't open that up. Morticia still lives this time. I may have gone through that coffin or into it with a past character when that character killed her but can't remember now. That character probably had good lockpicking skills. The interesting thing about all of this is that that's the only quest in alteraeon I've found to date that has different kinds of objects on the same kind of monster. Thanks for doing that, it makes the game more interesting. -- --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] alteraeon training suggestion
It shouldn't be possible for players to use practices for spells and skills for which the stats they have won't support. If intelligence or wisdom is too low to use a skill or spell or any other stat the trainer could tell the player what stat or stats need to increase before they can learn that spell or skill. If implemented, this is likely to help players manage practices better. -- --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Question about A Blind Legend
If someone had the steam platform installed on a windows system I wonder if orca would run inside steam. That if it works might open up many games for blind gamers. I know valve hasn't done anything with accessibility and it would take the whole orca dependency stack being installed to enable orca if all of that can work. I don't do windows any more and to try something like that would need a tower with much disk space and a good amount of memory as a starting platform for any such experiment. The chalice for vemarken chapel is in pellam, you just go in there and search for it. The lost ring is in the stream west of vemarken probably guarded by a platypus north in a spring. Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon - Thief
alteraeon has a secure website and logging into that website and doing a credit card transaction is one possibility. If you have paypal set up with a payment method, send payments to s...@xirr.com and include your character's name in the message the fact you want to buy alteraeon credits and the amount of money will already be on the payment message. I think that's all correct. Re: [Audyssey] Door in lava tunnels area on Alteraeon
Maybe you could group with someone who has lockpicking skills and they could open the door for you then recall out of there. That's if lockpicking has a chance of working. I think that's why grouping is possible in alteraeon so those with essential skills can help solve problems like this for people without necessary skills. Re: [Audyssey] good weapons for a thief, warrior, cleric
I forgot, some weapons when you identify them specifically say thief or warrior. If you can use these you're probably going to be good to go. If you cannot yet and have locker space these may be good storage items for later use. Finally whenever considering leveling use the show cost command first and level the class you get shown with that command since it will be your cheapest class to level in terms of experience points. Why not just have knock blow the hinge pins out of the door? On Tue, 10 Jan 2017, dark wrote: Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2017 06:26:00 From: darkReply-To: Gamers Discussion list To: Gamers@audyssey.org Subject: [Audyssey] Alteraeon knock spell Hi. I've been trying to do the drow city close to fort Magnitia, and ran across a door that was locked. I tried the knock spell a bunch of times, and despite havig 25 int and 18 dex couldn't get through at all. I've neglected learning lock picking since as a druid mage I really should be using magic rather than dex, however it seems that KNock pretty much is just lock picking with a mana cost, which makes it a bit pointless, and also a problem if you don't have high dex, indeed I got killed because I ran out of mana on the bloody door (that and I didn't have a livoak at the time). I was therefore wondering if the knock spell could be made a bit more effective as an alternative tto lock picking given that it costs mana to use. Indeed what might be fun is if the knock spell, instead of simply replicating the lock picking skill with a spell opened the door in a different way, for example with the first casting having the mage concentrate and grasp the tumblers in the lock one by one before turning them, meaning knock would always work, but at an increased mana cost. Heck necromancers could have a versio where they create a literal skeleton key out of harvested bones, which could be more efficient on mana than the mage version, but require teeth. I know the game often has several ways of doing the same thing, for example the spells candle, crystal light and continual light, but it'd be really useful if in this case the spell did a little more than just replicate lock pick and so could be a bit more useful to none thieves. Something out of the Harry Potter books called the hand of glory would solve your problem if it were available in alteraeon. Infravision may be helpful to you if you didn't acquire that yet. It seems like a hard thing to get around, since I cannot sneak or hide without the light either, since I cannot see anything out there without the light. About the only way I can use backstab is to use an invisibility potion or something like that, which seems pretty high cost. Another question, what good is the cloak of darkness? It blocks all vision in the area, so it seems as bad for my character as for anyone he comes across. Really any ideas/suggestions would be helpful. Right now he is a 13 lv Thief, 6 lv Cleric, and 3 lv Mage. I am planning on swapping mage for cleric as we move along, since mage seems to have more useful utility spells for a thief. Re: [Audyssey] accessible games for android tablets
a blind legend is available on both android and iPhone. On android, random roguelike adventure is available. Then there are text fiction games and that should be a search term to locate those games. blindfold games and game hub games are also available. That's what I know about and it's probably a small percentage of what's accessible and available on android. One site to search http://www.inclusiveandroid.com/ is Android's answer to Apple's http://www.appleviz.com/ for finding accessible software of all kinds. [Audyssey] alteraeon; character at crossroads
I'm at a point in the idlewood quests where I got four lifestones released. I've figured out the locations of two more of the stones and both locations have guardians on those stones that overmatch my character. The quests I have been running I've run solo up to this point. With the necromancer and druid it is taking me multiple attack sessions to gain a few percent of experience and I haven't killed either of them just yet. For the other players of alteraeon, how many quests did you get into the game before you figured out the rest of these quests need a group to run with or simply cannot be done by the character you had developed up to that time? I started out as a warrior then started developing each additional class when it got too expensive to continue developing classes already developed. If I restart this character, I'm thinking what I'll try is to develop all stats when opportunity presents itself until there are no complaints about stat levels when I do check and then use any remaining practices to develop skills. In putting my existing character together every so often and apparently not often enough I spent practices on stats then spent remaining practices on skills. -- --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] alteraeon gravekeeper's quest
I got the quest done and did the Ranger's quests and am doing idlewild quests now. The second graveyard maze in the gravekeeper's quest was very puzzling to me for a time. I finally figured it out by writing the maze down and noticed how rooms in it changed and which rooms did not change. First corner rooms do not change and the maze is four columns and two rows of rooms to start out. A room in both rows starts off with east/west as possible passage directions. Then touching stones in those rooms changes the passage directions. When you start the maze you'll be on the bottom row. You want to go east through the east/west passage room each time you get to one of those rooms you'll then get to the top row of the maze and you go east through the second east/west passage room on that row. Once that's done you'll be going through a snake-like passage and whatever you do, do not retrace your steps in that passage always enter a room you were never in before. You'll get to the edge of the graveyard and have to kill a couple monsters then you meet the ferryman and give him the black coin and he takes you across into the gravekeeper's graveyard which is the third graveyard in that quest. Once you kill the gravekeeper and get his hand be sure you're completely healed before meeting the blacksmith again since the blacksmith will lock the door and suddenly turn into the next monster corrick you have to kill. Stuff I didn't figure out on that quest. Could the magic circle at all be used by those doing the quest and if so how? The door going south west of the blacksmith's shop which had a tremendous amount of evil behind it I never did figure a way to enter and don't know if that ought to be done by those doing the quest. Finally the censer; I got the leather bag and used it on the red dust and used the bag on the censer and just summoned a demon who told me I'd pay for my interferrence and the puppetmaster would be responsible. I don't know if the censer which is secured to the floor is meant to do anymore than that for those playing the quest. The black coin you need for the ferryman is in the secret room with the censer. It's not necessary to kill the dark priestess and is very hard to do so but if you can manage it loot her corpse since she has stuff you'll eventually be able to use. -- --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. when you install tintin-alteraeon, you get tintin as a dependency. Re: [Audyssey] alteraeon gravekeepers quest
I got questions answered earlier today. 1) bronze censer is secured to floor of secret room so cannot be moved into magic circle; whatever else summoning the demon accomplishes is unknown to me for now. 2) the silver pen only works with unicorn blood not goblin blood. I did get a very good two-handed iron mace from a barbarian and that helps out lots of my stats and that was near the silver palace though. I recalled and exited the game a few minutes ahead of a reboot to save my character though. -- --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] nethack useful command
To move vertically in nethack k moves one row up and j moves one row down. Nethack usually has one accessibility configuration file in its distributions and that can start a good .nethackrc file. So long as two human or near human characters aren't on a level a search for the @ character will find where you are at. I usually get screen coordinates from the screen reader for special places on any level and store those coordinates and location description in an orgmode database as I play the game. I think once nethack is installed on a machine searching for nhaccess will find you the accessibility defaults file and that can be done with the locate command in linux easily enough. Heh. I've never won a game either, but I had much better luck playing nethack on dos than any other operating system, because of the way cursor tracking and movement is done. I can still play it on linux/bsd/osx, but it's much more of a pain, since (as far as I know) it's not possible to move up/down in those screen readers and stay at the same columnof the screen. Empire is another game similar to nethack in it's movement, that uses symbols to show various game pieces and terrain features, and although I have managed to win that one here and there, it's made harder by the need to determine capital vs. lower case characters, which in itself isn't difficult, but after a while, you assume you know the screen layout, and then the computer sneaks in under your nose, because you didn't check that troop transport, and later discover it belonged to the computer instead of to you. :) I've actually considered making an audio game out of empire, it might be difficult to manage, but I think if it were done, it would make tracking enemy pieces much easier. Re: [Audyssey] fires in the castle fireplaces
A player may need to do divination with a fire in a fireplace. Certain herbs when tossed into a fire when a person inhales the resulting smoke can help with divination. If memory serves bergamot is one of these herbs. Also, fireplaces have been known sometimes to have compartments behind or under certain bricks. I've even played a few games where moving a certain brick would cause the fireplace to turn and reveal a secret passage beyond it. For a player with initiative, a dive into a fountain or pool has sometimes got them into places they couldn't have imagined otherwise. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] newby t-o-m-e question
I'm using speakup on speakup-enabled debian. If you can play nethack, t-o-m-e is similar but way more elaborate. It's an overview game you are most of the time an (@) sign but if your character ever turns into a number usually a single digit, then you were attacked by a monster and the digit lets you know how many hit points you still have. The arrow keys do four direction movement with home end page up and page down getting you diagonals and 5 key on numeric keypad keeps you in the same spot. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Text based games
The text-based games aren't going away anytime soon. Cell phones are likely to keep them alive as will Linux which is replacing the operating systems Microsoft won't support anymore on home-based machines. The if-archive.org site along with supporting usenet newsgroups chronicle the ongoing creative activity and announcements of new games being produced. There's good reason not to attempt graphics-intensive stuff on cell phones primarily due to small screen sizes. Those small screen sizes when presented with graphics-intensive material get slowed down considerably which is why the wap standard had to be developed. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Text based games
For those that are playing agt games have you tried modifying the batch files that start up those games and putting the /v parameter on the line that actually runs the executables right after the name of the executable? I did that awhile back and ffor agt games that made them all work well with what screen readers I was using at that time. ___ Gamers mailing list .. drdos is available and if used screen readers will work on it. If you get the full set, you can even run ethernet cards with it. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] ever quest? was Sryth.
I played everquest a few years ago when I think compuserve was still text-based. If you have no problem playing nethack then everquest though it differs from nethack in one important respect should be possible. With nethack many characters get used to define any given room or location; in everquest, only a single character defines any given location and is where your cursor is placed. Another game where multi-player groups was possible was gemstone3 that used to be available on genie and later compuserve but now probably only on aol. It used to have two interfaces one was text and the other was gui and the gui interface experience had sounds that would play as you moved through different locations. I can't say that the gui interface is or was ever accessible on gemstone3 because I didn't have any windows capable equipment or enough money for the screen reader before the game venu access went away. Jen K --- MissWings [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Now that would be neat ... is there a way you can interact with other characters, or is it a one on one type game? It would be neat if you could join up with other characters and go through the game as a group, but I don't think you can do that yet. I'm still trying to finish the main adventure before I start on any of the other adventures they offer in each location. I'd get confused otherwise and wonder what I'd done and hadn't done, so I figure stick to one thing at a time and do all you can, and then go on to something else. Someone gave a link to this game yesterday and I signed up for it and really like it so far. I was just wondering, how would go about getting magical powers to use? I didn't see an option for that when I set up my character. I was kind of wondering if joining the adventurer's guild is worth the money too ... if anyone's done that and can give what the difference is between that and regular playing I wouldn't mind knowing about it. Re: [Audyssey] eamon
eamon is available to work on dos and the mac. I first had it on the mac and later found it on line on genie which no longer exists and may have it on a floppy somewhere. It came with a dungeon designer's kit where if you wanted to you could roll your own games too. I think there was even a version you could run using gwbasic too. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Linux Games.
Another tip I've read for grml is to use swspeak as a boot parameter. If the computer has a sound card grml can find and talk to properly be prepared for speech to also come out on the sound card. On Wed, 19 Apr 2006, shaun everiss wrote: never heard of this. Damn well wish I did. I ran from university fedora with speakup. The external fuzzing synth kept fuzzing failing. Depending on what I need to do to get grml working maybe all I need to do is script the stupid thing. At 03:03 PM 4/19/2006, you wrote: Hi, Use GRML. http://www.grml.org It has speakup as soon as you get it from the site. What you should do, is just make a boot CD of it, then install it to a hard drive (witch is easy or you can get help from your teacher, how ever, using speakup, it is possible to do it by your self). Then go to the accessible wiki page for GRML at http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=accessibility and do what it says to get speakup running when it is on the hard drive (yes, it is not as easy to get speakup to run the first time when it is on a hard drive, and you will need sited assistance for it(at least I did).). And, what is great is you don't need a hardware sinth. It is completely compatible with Debian Linux, because it is based on it. I love GRML, and have it right beside my Windows machine. What I thought was funny, was when I even upgraded from GRML 6 to GRML 7, I still did not have to restart Linux. Hahaha, just try to think of not restarting windows after a major update like that.
