Re: [Audyssey] Organizing the Audyssey Database
Hi Phil, That's a good question and one I've been doing some thinking about. I think what I will do is create a section called Multiplatform Games and under that include Muds, browser based games, interactive fiction, etc since they can't be assigned to any specific OS and can be played using Mac, Linux, Windows, whatever. As for handheld games like BopIt as well as brailed board and card games I'm still thinking of where to put those, but I'm sure I'll figure that out given enough time. :D Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Organizing the Audyssey Database
Hi Shaun, Well, for one thing Open CMS, (Content Management System,) is written in Java, and I don't think is very accessible. Even if it were I am running Audyssey on a server running Red Hat Enterprise, and I don't really want to install and run the Open JRE for Linux on there given that there are better alternatives to Open CMS. So no I wouldn't use that as my first choice. However, if people are concerned about editable content etc I have thought about using a Wiki like Wikimedia which would allow me to create the site, and allow people to edit the pages for reviews, post walkthroughs, and all kinds of things just like on Wiki sites such as Wikipedia, but that is down the road. At the moment I am looking for a simple straight forward solution that works. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated, and I don't want to spend a lot of time writing an SQL database in MySQL and using php or perl scripting the database. That stuff can wait until I have the time and energy to work on it. Cheers! [Audyssey] Organizing teh Audyssey Database
Hello all, Today or tomorrow I want to begin working on the Audyssey games database, and I was wondering how you all think I should organize and arrange the games and developers. There are many ways to do this so I thought I would throw a few suggestions out here and gather your input. The first way I could organize the database is by developer. I could have a list of developers such as BSC Software, GMA Games, PCs Games, Blind Adrenaline, etc and below that heading all the games they have produced. Of course, the problem with that method is if you are looking for a certain type of game it is difficult to find or locate without going through and each and every game on the site. The second method is to organize games by type or genre. I could have various categories such as action, strategy, card games, puzzle games, etc. I think this would be a more acceptable method for organizing the games on the site as you could go directly to the section that was of interest and skip those sections that weren't of any interest. The third option is similar to the second accept instead of just being divided by genre they could also be divided up by platform such as Mac OS, Windows, Linux, and iOS. Under those headings would be subheadings such as action, strategy, card, puzzle, whatever. Any thoughts here? Are you planning to store the data/content in actual database, or just lay it out on pages in a structured arrangement? Asking since, if in database, you could then let guys search, or request different sort orders, categorisations, etc. etc. using data queries generated by page controls, etc., easily enough? As in wouldn't think it was necessarily necessary to sort of hard-code layout options/arrangement/ordering/categorisation as such - if that makes sense? Hi Jacob, For the moment its just going to be laid out on a page or pages in a well organized structural arrangement. I don't have much time right now to design a fully operational database per say, but I do want to get something functional up and running for now. The easiest way to do that would be to layout the site and page structure and add to it as I have time. I can always go back and change it later as needed. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Organizing the Audyssey Database
This would be the approach I would find most useful. Games that would run on my system, that are the genre I am looking for, and the developer I prefer (if there is a preference), would be easily found. Those that won't work on my system could easily be skipped. Re: [Audyssey] Organizing teh Audyssey Database
Hello, I like either options 2 or 3. Option 2 would be good for what I think of as a general search like if I wanted to find all games in a particular genre that would work. Option 3 I kind of think of it as being more specific, like if I'm looking for specifically windows games, or Linux games, or Android games, and then can take it by game type. I'm also in favor of a database-driven query approach, takes out the hard coding and lets the end user search per their own preference. Hth Dave. In that case, I'd generally agree with other guys - group by genre, but, maybe also split up per platform/operating system, etc., so that if wasn't interested in/able to use an iPhone/windows game, wouldn't need to look through them, etc.? Hi Ron and all, I like that option myself. As it happens I just started putting together the framework for option three since that seems to be where everyone is heading with this line of questioning. There isn't anything of substance there yet but you can go to http://www.audyssey.org/games.php to view what I'm currently doing with organizing the games. Right now I have individual pages for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, etc and plan to then arrange games for that platform by genre such as arcade, action, card, puzzle, whatever. Re: [Audyssey] Organizing the Audyssey Database
Hi Dave, Eventually, we might get there, but I really don't want to take the time and effort to develop a database driven query right now. Unless you are volunteering to write one for the site right now I'm going to keep it simple stupid. Basically, just a few links to games and the developers. Besides Audiogames.net has a more advanced system in place for those people who want a full database etc for the moment. My concern is just to get the framework of the site in place for now and build on to it as I have time. Cheers! Hi Jacob, Hmm..That works. Although, I was thinking of just using a list of the various games of a particular type. For example, for FPS I could have Teraformers, Shades of Doom, Monkey Business, and clicking on the link for that game takes you to a page more about that game. Although, I suppose if people like the idea of having subheadings for games that works just as well. Hi Jacob, Yes, exactly. The one thing I want to do here is keep it simple stupid. I don't want to give the end user too much content per page when I can break it up into smaller chunks or modules per say. I haven't decided on the actual genres but I suspect it will work like this. You will go to the main games page, select Windows, find action games, and click on Shades of Doom which brings up a page for that particular game. That page will have the developer's name, developers site, cost of the game, and other details about the game. To go bak to the list of Windows games just hit the back button on your web browser.
