Re: [Audyssey] bpc text adventures

Hi Haiden.

I was only going on the basis that LLewie already seems to have done this
with the great escape, making a playable windows version, so possibly
it could be done with the others.

Hi Dark,
Probably. Though someone would have to want to port the code to a language
that will compile an executable. Interestingly enough, the .bas extension
files are used for standard code modules in VB, though methinks it
probably

wouldn't be compilable in that format.

Well, if it takes that sort of trouble, would it be possible to have
them converted to something more playable the way The great escape already

That would be welcome indeed.

No no, GWBASIC was the program they were written in most likely. An
example
of an interpreter would be something like basica.

They are written in basic and you will need an interpreter to run them. I
heard of a program called GWBasic a while back, but not sure if it still

After Michael asked about these it got me curious and I downloaded and
tried
them.

I assumed that sinse they said they ran with doss, there would be a file
I

could run under the console in windows to play the game, such as an exe,
com
or bat file, but there are none of those around in the folders, just a
bas

file which does nothing when I try to open it.

Are these completely un runnable under windows? and if so, any chance of
making them runnable?

I just rather fancy the idea of single player adventure games, -
maybe

lewie could fix these the way he did with the great escape, which is
deffinately fun.

Hi Dark,

Sure its possible. There are plenty of languages we could convert this
to such as Python, Perl, or Ruby which would be a lot more current
and be way more cross-platform to boot.

In fact, I have a number of games written in Apple basic such as
Oregon Trail that I'd love to convert to a more modern programming
language. Python sounds like a good bet since it is simple to code in,
is cross-platform, but then requires that the Python runtime be
installed.

Although, for text adventures I've been thinking of using a scripting
language called Perl. It is C-like, but like Python is an interpreted
language. In a way Perl is like writing in C without all the over head
and complexity attached.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] bpc text adventures

Hi Dark,
Probably. Though someone would have to want to port the code to a
language

that will compile an executable. Interestingly enough, the .bas extension
files are used for standard code modules in VB, though methinks it
probably

wouldn't be compilable in that format.

Best Regards,
Hayden

2010-11-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Well, personally I hate the interactive fiction languages such as
zcode. No doubt my personal bias stems from the fact I am a skilled
programmer and I'm able to see right away how limited those languages
really are. I also know there are better ways of doing the same thing,
but for symplicities sake, symplicity being the word, zcode is popular
with interactive fiction authors, because it doesn' require any actual
programming skill. You are in a big way limited to whatever the zcode
language supports. So for me I wouldn't use zcode for a game like
Oregon Trail personally.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] bpc text adventures

2010-11-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ian,

Have you tried any of the cross-platform interpreters like frobtads,
scare, frotz, etc?

I mean if I can play dozens of text adventures on Linux surely there
are just as many if not more support for Mac OS. Most of the
interpreters I use are open source and can be cross-compiled on any
Unix-compatible OS.

Re: [Audyssey] bpc text adventures

2010-11-13 Thread Thomas Ward

Well, if it takes that sort of trouble, would it be possible to have

 That would be welcome indeed.

Re: [Audyssey] bpc text adventures

2010-11-13 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi folks,
Old basic for dos started with gwBasic.exe
You had to type in on the command line,
c:\gwbasic.exe game.bas
to get the game.bas to run.
A newer version was named basica.exe
and then
qbasic.exe which was what Jim's DOS games used.
All the basic programs could produce a executable if compiled with the
correct switches .

I don't remember what they were.
Phil

They are written in basic and you will need an interpreter to run them. I
heard of a program called GWBasic a while back, but not sure if it still
exists or is being developed.

After Michael asked about these it got me curious and I downloaded and
tried

them.

I assumed that sinse they said they ran with doss, there would be a file I
could run under the console in windows to play the game, such as an exe,
com

or bat file, but there are none of those around in the folders, just a bas
file which does nothing when I try to open it.

Are these completely un runnable under windows? and if so, any chance of
making them runnable?

I just rather fancy the idea of single player adventure games, - maybe
lewie could fix these the way he did with the great escape, which is
deffinately fun.

Beware the Grue!
