graduation vote, so there isn't that much to report anymore, but for
the record it would still be nice if you could mention the graduation

Hi Jukka,
I've just added something in this respect to Syncope November report and
also notified our mentors to get it signed off.

apart from the jQuery question it looks fine.
You might btw be carefull with the samples. If we publish a WAR which contains
other libraries, then this might be interpreted as 'distributing' them.

In OpenWebBeans, DeltaSpike and MyFaces we don't deploy them any longer in
binary form. Just the sources. Users can easily build it themselfs. And most of
the times they are only interested in the sample source anyway.

Hi ant,
by taking a look at other ASF projects including JQuery (or similar

should add reference to JQuery / CodeMirror and their MIT license in

Is this correct? If so, I'll open an issue and fix it ASAP.

Do you think this is a blocker for the release?

My perception is that the Syncope guys are trying to cut a 1.0.0,

Indeed, yes.

Done: it seems that ant-driven XSLT transformation has some issues with

Well, the logo actually already *contains* TM, even though it's a bit

it's easier to see it in the big logo version shown in homepage; anyway,
we'll discuss whether it's the case to make it slightly bigger in dev ML.

Only, in home page the first row is shown separately, due to CSS (the
HTML is the same): is this an issue?

Please note that older apache releases usually are removed from the
dist folders. It seems you are not planning this because I see an
older releases section.
By the way, older releases are here:
http://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/syncope/
If you need to distribute old versions, I would drop a note at infra site.

You're right: we'll move the older releases links to point to
http://archive.apache.org/dist/incubator/syncope/, thanks!

- Javadoc got a copyright footer; I am currently not sure if Trademark
team is happy with the old footer or if it should be the same as on
the frontpage:
http://incubator.apache.org/syncope/1.0.0-RC2-incubating/apidocs/index.html

Can you please show me a podling or TLP from which we can borrow the
correct copyright footer? Thanks.

These are all minor issues and can be fixed after this release.

I have not found any other problems so far. Thanks for putting all the
effort with the Licenses.

Thanks for reviewing!

Can you please show me a podling or TLP from which we can borrow the correct
copyright footer? Thanks.

You already have it! :-)

I would the long footer version from the main site:

Copyright © 2010-2012 The Apache Software Foundation. All Rights Reserved.

project logo and the Apache Syncope logo are trademarks of The Apache
Software Foundation. All other marks mentioned may be trademarks or
registered trademarks of their respective owners.

Oh yes, I have the *text*: I was looking for some other podling for
copying the way how this copyright footer is injects (in POM) into
javadocs :-)

This seems pretty powerful! Could you also make the script include not
just the podling names, but also their descriptions, current mentors
and whether a podling is just starting (first three months in
Incubator)? Those are the key details I'm currently using when

I've put the result at [1] for the moment: if this is fine for you, I'll

There seems to be a problem: the report is headed

Apache Incubator Podlings needing to prepare report in June

but all except the first podling are shown as being in:

Group 1 = January, April, July, October

Actually, not: you can also find some Group 2: the point is that the
XSLT [2] takes the current month via EXSLT, than chooses the group to
which next month belongs to and finally outputs the podlings that needs
to report on next month (hence should prepare the report during this
month) + all podlings with report/@monthly = 'true', i.e. the ones
labeled as 'starting0 in the output HTML.

I suspect the report header should be for July.

It would help if the page showed the year as well; also the report
generation date would be useful.

Ok.

Also, I think it would be more useful if the podling names linked to
i.a.o/projects/podling rather than the podling website.
The former has a link to the latter anyway (or should!).

Fine: I've taken [3] as starting point, so each podling's section is
pretty similar.

It is the list of podlings that need to *prepare* their report in July in order

At least, this is how I intended initial Jukka's reqs...

Hum, I've just realized that this wouldn't work: re-generation of this

updated; the ANT-based stuff would be enough for latter but not for

Wait, no, i did not mean installing Cocoon.

Just showing that Seb has already done a simple job which
will keep Jukka going. If people want to add more then
follow Seb/Joe clever example of using the Apache CMS
in conjunction with Ant to do the processing.

I don't know which version to install was meaning between the two
options provided above: don't worry, I didn't mean to install Cocoon
only for this :)

I am not sure whether it is more handy to have the month report produced
based on current date (1) or on provided input parameter, but I
interpreted your initial suggestion to replicate what done by Sebb, i.e.
ANT-based transformation triggered by someone (the CMS?) on podlings.xml
publish.

Re: [VOTE] Apache Syncope 1.0.0-RC1-incubating / 2nd attempt

2012-05-16 Thread Francesco Chicchiriccò
Hi all,
as far as I've understood we are quite in an impasse here: is there any
quick way out?

I've performed some more analysis and I've come to the following findings:

1. XPP3 is pulled in by XStream (syncope-core and syncope-console WAR files)

[INFO] +- com.thoughtworks.xstream:xstream:jar:1.4.2:compile
[INFO] | \- xpp3:xpp3_min:jar:1.1.4c:compile

and by ApacheDS (syncope-build-tools WAR file)

[INFO] +- org.apache.directory.server:apacheds-all:jar:1.5.7:compile
[INFO] | +- org.apache.directory.shared:shared-ldif:jar:0.9.19:compile
[INFO] | \-
org.apache.directory.shared:shared-dsml-parser:jar:0.9.19:compile
[INFO] | \- xpp3:xpp3:jar:1.1.4c:compile

XStream says that other XML parsers can be used (
http://xstream.codehaus.org/download.html#optional-deps), I don't know
about ApacheDS - but guess Emmanuel does.

2. The following are all the transitive dependencies currently not
mentioned in LN files:

org.livetribe:livetribe-jsr223:jar:2.0.6
org.mybatis:mybatis:jar:3.0.6
xmlpull:xmlpull:jar:1.1.3.1
xpp3:xpp3_min:jar:1.1.4c / xpp3:xpp3:jar:1.1.4c
aopalliance:aopalliance:jar:1.0
asm:asm:jar:3.3.1
antlr:antlr:jar:2.7.7
dom4j:dom4j:jar:1.6.1
joda-time:joda-time:jar:2.0

Can we found a simple and shared way to assess what is the legal,
correct and complete, content of Syncope LN files?
Is there any other ASF project distributing WAR files we can check?

If not: what if just include in LN files all the deps reported above?
Is this harmful in any way?

Please help: we'd really like to cut out first release...

Best regards.

which does not change anything imho

Now, I do think that we should include into the NL files the licenses for
3rd parties we *directly* include, but not those that are transivitely
included. I may be wrong though. I understand your position, too.

It may be worthful to ask beside this thread what is the correct way to
 refer those transitive dependencies...
 +1

Did not know there were other positions actually.

 http://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html#best-practice-license
All the licenses on all the files to be included within a package
should be included in the LICENSE document.
But as soon as we include the deps' licenses we include, even if they
themselves include some 3rd party licenses, my understanding is that they
 already have done the job...
If they did it it. I have not opened all the files to be honest, but
is this something we can rely on (that they have done their job
 proberly)?

It says to me, it does not matter who depends on what, it does only
 matter whats inside your war.

Btw, I am still unsure which license XPP has. This is worse, because:
 http://www.apache.org/dev/release.html#distribute-other-artifacts
Again, these artifacts may be distributed only if they contain
 LICENSE and NOTICE files

 See on
 http://www.extreme.indiana.edu/dist/java-repository/xpp3/distributions/,
 unzip the
 http://www.extreme.indiana.edu/dist/java-repository/xpp3/distributions/xpp3-1.1.4c_src.tgz
tarball and check the included license.
Thanks! I opened the jar from the Syncope war, there was no info included.

Is that compatible? Indiana University Extreme! Lab Software License
I think its fine, but I am not very good with that boring stuff:
 http://apache.org/legal/3party.html

 Btw, this phrase is interesting:
Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright notice

This includes the provided war file. There is no copyright notice of
XPP and my guess is the license holders are not interested if we are
having it as transitive lib or not.

that as xpp3 is in the war file release. Once you told me, I will give my +1

Clearly missing in the NL files.

OK. Guess this should be fixed with a new attempt then.

Will do ASAP - guess we are trying to beat some record at Syncope: I
know that Flex made it in seven attempts, we are approaching... ;-)

Jokes apart, we are talking here about XPP3, a transitive dependency of
XStream which is instead a declared dependency of Syncope (core).
We honestly did not consider at all such dependencies in LN files, and
there are quite some: what's the best practice for such cases? I see no
option but using the maven dependency plugin in order to find all
transitive dependencies and update LN files consequently.

Is this correct? Basically, I feel this like breaking the Maven
dependency resolution...

Release looks ok so far.

I have found files like that:
syncope-build-tools-1.0.0-RC1-incubating-classes.jar.asc.md5

This is a maven bug. The signature plugin does sign everything, including
the .asc file, AFAIK.

At Commons usually we delete these files manually. If you don't mind,
its really not an issue. Just wanted to mention it.

Other question: the projects I know vote upon a website too. Is this
not the case with Syncope?

Hmmm... Good question. I never voted against any web site on the various
projects I worked or mentored. Where does it come from ?

We include a link to the staged website at Commons and I have done so for log4j.
I just checked the latest Struts vote, we don't include the site there.
Guess its just matter of taste.

Nice suggestion: we'll take into account for (hopefully) next releases.

Thanks for your support.

If this is the second attempt, why is it called RC1 ?

Surely it should be called RC2 ?
Depends. As the first vote has been canceled, there was nothing like an
 official RC1.
RC means Release candidate; if the vote passes, it becomes the release.
As noted in the subject, this is the 2nd attempt for RC1.
 Does not make sense.

The second attempt is the second release candidate, i.e. RC2.

We agreed on a version scheme where RCi are full releases (from release
process point of view) while not including everything planned on JIRA
for the corresponding version: hence, our 1.0.0-RC1-incubating doesn't
have all fixes planned for 1.0.0-incubating.

In other words, RC1 is referring to the completeness of the code against
the issues, not to the completeness of the release against the release
requirements.

At least, this is how we defined Syncope release numbering scheme;
moreover, it seems to me that every project is defining its own
versioning ([1] [2] [3] for example), and I personally think it's correct.

Release numbers are just labels, after all, isn't it?

Anyway, is there also other IPMC available to check the release to bind
his vote? Thanks!

There must be an Incubator DISCLAIMER.
This is required in all distributions (and on the web-site, which has been
done).

Please add the DISCLAIMER file to SVN and make sure it gets added to all
archives.

Understood.

The NOTICE file is very long; I suspect that not all of the entries are
*required*.

The LICENSE and NOTICE files were written against the parent POM: all
the dependencies with scope != test were considered, then.

For example, cglib is available under AL 2.0, so I don't think it needs to be
mentioned in the NOTICE file.

All the AL 2.0 dependencies not from ASF were added anyway to the
LICENSE and NOTICE files; we preferred to have these two files with the
same entries, even though for different purposes.

The LICENSE file should mention all software included in the release.

In both cases, the NL files should only mention software that is actually
included in the release.

The LICENSE file misspells Javassist.

Already fixed in trunk: thanks for reporting!

Maven staging repo:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachesyncope-034/

The syncope-root POM does not use the Apache POM as parent.
ASF product Poms should normally chain back to a version of the Apache
pom to ensure that the correct settings are established.
[the other poms do chain back to the Apache pom]

If there is a good reason for not doing so, it should be documented in
the pom, and care must be taken to ensure that the required elements
are copied from the Apache pom.

As you might have noticed, the root POM is not the parent POM, and
parent POM does extend Apache POM 10.
The root POM is only functional to perform some actions: anyway we'll
try to make it extend Apache POM as well.

FYI, we have already planned to normalize POM structure in next major
release (see SYNCOPE-79 on JIRA)

possible spread across multiple heterogeneous systems. This would
involve: creating / updating / deleting /moving user credentials and
attributes via LDAP / Active Directory / RDMS and so on.

An Identity Manager - like Syncope - is usually working together with an
Access Manager in order to provide a complete IAM (=Identity and Access
Management) solution.

Syncope does not provide yet a connector for interoperating with Shiro,
but this looks like a nice feature to put somewhere in the roadmap.

Regards.

Subject: [DISCUSS] Syncope to Join the Apache Incubator

 Hi all guys,

I would like to propose Syncope, an Open Source system for managing
identities in enterprise environments, implemented in JEE technology,
originally developed by Tirasa, an Italian IT company, to be an Apache
 Incubator project.
The goal for Syncope is to become the reference implementation for
Open Source Identity Management, a middleware area in which there are
very few and not yet mature Open Source solutions available.

Here's a link to the proposal in the Incubator wiki[1] where we
 started collecting all needed info.

As you will note, the list of mentors is in need of some volunteers,
so if you find this interesting, feel free to sign up or let us know
 you are interested :).

Hope to read from you soon, thanks in advance and have a nice day!
 All the best,
 Simo

 Hi Simo!

Sounds like a really nice project.

 Sounds nice, yes.

But I wonder if there is some overlap with the Apache Shiro project [1]?

IMO, Syncope spectra is wider than Shiro. Actually, Syncope *could*
 use Shiro.

Correct.

I have a Q : Can't it be a bit larger than just JEE based ? Many would
like a solution which extends to tomcat only...

Syncope officially supports Apache Tomcat 7 as first option [1],
Glassfish 3.1.1 (recently, on trunk) [2] and JBoss 7 (ongoing work, on
trunk) [3].

+1 for the proposal otherwise, I can help mentoring the project to
 some extent.

Does this mean that we can put your name on the proposal? ;-)

 Hi Francesco and Simo,

 it looks interesting.

As an Identity Manager, I wonder if we can't extend it to OSGi, in
 addition of JEE.

Hi,
I must admit that I am not very deep in OSGi stuff, but there shouldn't
be nothing against making Syncope core work in - say ;-) - Karaf, due to
its dependencies (see the proposal for more details).

We will need an OSGi helping hand for this, of course...

 Hi Mark,
 first of all, thanks.

Apache Shiro is a powerful and easy-to-use Java security framework
that performs authentication, authorization, cryptography, and session
management. - this means that Shiro is an Access Manager.
