[ANNOUNCE] Apache Hivemall 0.6.0-incubating released

2019-12-19 Thread Makoto Yui
Hi all,

The Apache Hivemall (incubating) project team is proud to announce
Apache Hivemall 0.6.0-incubating has been released.

Apache Hivemall is a scalable machine learning library implemented as
Hive UDFs/UDAFs/UDTFs. Hivemall runs on Hadoop-based data processing
frameworks, specifically on Apache Hive, Apache Spark, and Apache Pig.

This is the 3rd Apache release as an Apache Incubator project and a
major feature
introduced in this release includes supports for XGBoost.

The release artifacts and ChangeLog can be found at:

*Disclaimer*
Apache Hivemall (incubating) is an effort undergoing incubation at
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), sponsored by the name of Apache
Incubator PMC. Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects
until a further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications,
and decision making process have stabilized in a manner consistent
with other successful ASF projects. While incubation status is not
necessarily a reflection of the completeness or stability of the code,

Hi,

+1 (binding)

I checked
- incubator in name
- LICENSE and NOTICE are fine
- DISCLAIMER file
- sha512 and asc signature are good
- rat check passed
The following showed some files not including ASF license headers
but they were borrowed codes
$ java -jar apache-rat-0.12/apache-rat-0.12.jar -a -d
apache-doris-0.9.0.rc02-incubating-src -e *.md *.MD .gitignore
.gitmodules .travis.yml manifest **vendor** **licenses** | grep File:
| grep -v "test_data" | grep -v "gutil" | grep -v "json" | grep -v
"patch" | grep -v "xml" | grep -v "conf" | grep -v "svg" | cut -f 3 -d
" " | xargs head -100
- can build from source within the docker image

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Doris 0.9.0-incubating-rc01

2019-01-11 Thread Makoto Yui
I vote with +0 (binding).

Due to source build problems, I cannot vote +1 but not negative to other
three +1 because an IPMC (Dave) was succeeded for src build and other
checkpoints are green.

I checked the following points:
- Are release files in correct location?
 Yes
- Do release files have the word incubating in their name?
 Yes
- Are the digital signature and hashes correct?
 Yes
- Does DISCLAIMER file exist?
 Yes
- Do LICENSE and NOTICE files exists?
 Yes
- Is the LICENSE and NOTICE text correct?
Yes (except issues pointed by Williem)
- Is the NOTICE year correct?
 Yes
- Un-included software dependencies are not mentioned in LICENSE or NOTICE?
 Not checked
- License information is not mentioned in NOTICE?
 Yes
Is there any 3rd party code contained inside the release? If so:
- Does the software have a compatible license?
 Yes (checked LICENSE.txt)
- Are all software licenses mentioned in LICENSE?
 Not checked
- Is the full text of the licenses (or pointers to it) in LICENSE?
 Yes
Is any of this code Apache licensed? Do they have NOTICE files? If so:
- Have relevant parts of those NOTICE files been added to this NOTICE file?
 Yes
- Do all source files have ASF headers?
 Rat check passed successfully

https://github.com/apache/incubator-doris/wiki/How-to-verify-Apache-Release#3-verify-license-header
- Do the contents of the release match with what's tagged in version
control?
 Seems fine
- Are there any unexpected binary files in the release?
 Rat check passed
- Can you compile from source? Are the instruction clear?
Failed to compile. Not sure users can build Doris from src.
 Instruction was clear.
- Is the issue minor?
 Unsure
- Could it possibly be fixed in the next release?
 Yes

Thanks,
Makoto

2019-01-10 Thread Makoto Yui
Reed,

Why not cancel rc1 and create rc2 fixing license header issue that Willem
pointed?
It seems it's better to be fixed.

It also seems that no one from IPMC succeeded to build distribution from
src (no sure for Luke though).

I got the following build error (which might be gcc-5 version issue):

[ 57%] Building CXX object

*Disclaimer*
Apache Hivemall (incubating) is an effort undergoing incubation at
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), sponsored by the name of Apache
Incubator PMC. Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects
until a further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications,
and decision making process have stabilized in a manner consistent
with other successful ASF projects. While incubation status is not
necessarily a reflection of the completeness or stability of the code,
it does indicate that the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF.

Re: [PROPOSAL] Changing requirements for IPMC

2018-11-29 Thread Makoto Yui
Justin,

I think it's a great idea. Podling project leads know the up-to-date
ASF incubation process very well.
It helps finding active mentors.

As a release manager and PPMC of an incubator project, requiring more
active mentor(s),
I would be glad to give help the following podling projects.

> - has been involved in an incubating project from start to finish

BTW, is this (made a TLP project from incubator) a requirement?
Or, on-going incubating project PPMC membe or committers can join to IPMC?

Thanks,
Makoto

Mentors wanted for Apache Hivemall (Incubating)

2018-09-25 Thread Makoto Yui
Hi community,

The Apache Hivemall project has only two active mentors and looking
for new mentors.

We are very appreciated if anyone would like to be a volunteer to help us.

Here below is the brief information about our project:

Apache Hivemall (incubating) is a scalable machine learning library
for Apache Hive, Spark, and Pig.

• Website: http://hivemall.incubator.apache.org/
• Github: https://github.com/apache/incubator-hivemall
• Teams: http://hivemall.incubator.apache.org/team-list.html
• Last podling report: https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/September2018

Recent talks by our PMC members:
•
https://speakerdeck.com/takuti/apache-hivemall-query-based-handy-scalable-machine-learning-on-hive
(OSDC europe)
(ApacheCon North America)

We plan to have two more Apache releases in Incubator and willing
graduate Incubator in 2019.

Last but not least, I'm attending ApacheCon North America and give a
talk on Thursday 16:40 at Ballroom. So, it's welcome to join the
session to discuss about mentoring after the talk.

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Hivemall 0.5.0-incubating released

2018-03-05 Thread Makoto Yui
The Apache Hivemall (incubating) Project Team is proud to announce
Apache Hivemall 0.5.0-incubating has been released.
This is the first Apache release since the project entered Apache Incubator.

Apache Hivemall is a scalable machine learning library implemented as
Hive UDFs/UDAFs/UDTFs. Hivemall runs on Hadoop-based data processing
frameworks, specifically on Apache Hive, Apache Spark, and Apache Pig.

The release is available at:

 https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/incubator/hivemall/0.5.0-incubating/

*Disclaimer*
Apache Hivemall (incubating) is an effort undergoing incubation at
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), sponsored by the name of Apache
Incubator PMC. Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects
until a further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications,
and decision making process have stabilized in a manner consistent
with other successful ASF projects. While incubation status is not
necessarily a reflection of the completeness or stability of the code,
it does indicate that the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Hivemall (Incubating) v0.5.0 Release Candidate 3

2018-03-02 Thread Makoto Yui
Hi IPMC members,

It's already 72 hours passed.

We need two more votes from IPMC members.

Could anyone in IPMC volunteer help verifying our release?

With a prepared docker image, just type the following commands to run Rat check:

  $ docker run -it hivemall/verify:v0.5.0-rc3
  $ wget
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/incubator/hivemall/0.5.0-incubating-rc3/hivemall-0.5.0-incubating-source-release.zip
  $ unzip hivemall-0.5.0-incubating-source-release.zip
  $ cd hivemall-0.5.0-incubating
  $ mvn apache-rat:check

Thanks,
Makoto

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Hivemall (Incubating) v0.5.0 Release Candidate 3

2018-02-26 Thread Makoto Yui
Hi,

I created a docker image [1,2] to verify release artifacts.

Just run the following command to verify a release artifact.

# 1). run a docker image
$ docker run -it hivemall/verify:v0.5.0-rc3

# 2). download Hivemall release artifacts, build, and run unit tests.
$ ./build_from_src.sh

We need votes from IPMC members.

Thanks,
Makoto

[RESULT][VOTE] Release Apache Hivemall (Incubating) v0.5.0-RC2

2018-02-13 Thread Makoto Yui
Hi everyone,

The 0.5.0-RC2 vote failed with -1 binding votes.

-1 votes (binding) and reasons:
Justin Mclean - unexpended binary in source release

Vote thread:
https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/33eed30795cc211791ec93a48786ee3f9d8c0961896b9e731476ee9b@%3Cgeneral.incubator.apache.org%3E

We'll prepare another release candidate (RC3) resolving unexpended binary
and Copyright issues.

Best,
Makoto

I'm currently asking our mentor though not all our mentors would not
be experts of licensing issue.

Again, http://apache.org/legal/src-headers.html#notice says
"The NOTICE file *may* also include copyright notices moved from
source files submitted to the ASF."

SGA providers would expect copyright are left in somewhere.
https://github.com/myui/hivemall/blob/v0.4.2-rc.2/NOTICE#L8 (before
entering Incubator)

I'll ask about this issue to confirm about the above guidance in legal-discuss@.

I put License file of OFL 1.1 in the distribution and put link to it
in the LICENSE.
https://github.com/apache/incubator-hivemall/commit/446eac6703270aa00c8cb00dd115e7500faf6518

Font-awesome v4.6.3 uses SIL OFL 1.1 for it's License.
https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/blob/v4.6.3/css/font-awesome.css#L3

I assume we do not need to put Apache LICENSE v2 file for
https://github.com/apache/incubator-hivemall/blob/v0.5.0/LICENSE#L216

For other licenses, full texts of licenses are included.

Update the NOTICE file.
https://github.com/apache/incubator-hivemall/blob/v0.5.0/NOTICE

[1] http://apache.org/legal/src-headers.html#notice
says "The NOTICE file may also include copyright notices moved from
source files submitted to the ASF."

Tomcat states "Copyright 2014 The Netty Project" and "Copyright 2014
Twitter" following [1].
https://github.com/apache/tomcat/blob/trunk/NOTICE#L28

For our case, copyright before entering incubators are L10-13.
The three copyright holders sent SGA when entering Incubator.

You concern cleared?

To clear discussion, the missing license body is specifically for
https://github.com/apache/incubator-hivemall/blob/v0.5.0/LICENSE#L315

font-awesome does not include license body just use link to OFL 1.1
for Font license.
https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/blob/master/LICENSE.txt#L13

We need to fill copyrights of OFL 1.1 [2] but copyright of
font-awesome is unclear.
OFL 1.1 copyright form is not willed.
https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/issues/5281

Font-awesome uses github mention for Copyright (unclear).
https://github.com/apache/incubator-hivemall/blob/master/src/site/resources/css/font-awesome.css#L2

BTW, font-awesome is widely used in many ASF projects.
https://github.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93=org%3Aapache+SIL+Open+Font+License+filename%3ALICENSE=Code

So, I would like to follow the other TLP project passing ASF legal
checks for this incubator release.
https://github.com/apache/flink/blob/34e106f63c9dcd2673d66b47fda1555b7dced770/LICENSE#L301

https://github.com/apache/phoenix/blob/ee4355791acf3f31568fcd8c43367947d25a1386/LICENSE#L233

Isn't it acceptable?

Made NOTICE clean and revised License headers following [1] with the
following commit:

https://github.com/apache/incubator-hivemall/commit/147f26fa25bacb4134256a01f6ff84e14a505b7a

On publishing artifacts to Maven, pom versions are written and thus
signature change is actually happening in other release, I think.
Signature of XXX.src.zip can be unchanged though.

IMO, adding license information along with copyrights in NOTICE sounds
reasonable because comparing LICENSE with NOTICE is hard when divided
while it may be redundant.

Not yet. I'm asking our mentors to join this vote, expecting some of them joins.

BTW, can we remove "rcX" from "x.y.z-rcX" on releasing "x.y.z" without
voting when IPMC vote passed?
Some of other incubator projects do so but I don't have confidence
whether it's okay or not.

Hi Justin,

Thank you for a careful verification.

[1] is not used anymore and should be removed.

I'll discuss with PPMC members about LICENSE/NOTICE file format.
I'll add appendix to LICENSE file about other license headers.

I used NOTICE file of Hadoop/Spark project as a reference.
https://github.com/apache/hadoop/blob/trunk/NOTICE.txt
https://github.com/apache/spark/blob/master/NOTICE#L2

In your opinion, Hadoop/Spark's NOTICE file is wrong as well.

I'll cancel this release and do release process again but wait for
other IPMC's comment for a while to find other glitches.

Thanks,

[VOTE] Release Apache Hivemall (Incubating) v0.5.0-RC2

Got it.

Will collect a CLA for a non-trivial contribution and invite a contributor
who made such large contributions to the project as a committer.

Contributions during incubation

2016-11-16 Thread Makoto Yui
I have a newbie question about incubation process.

Is there any guide for accepting patches from non-committers during incubation.
Do we need a CLA sign for each contributor?

I saw discussion in [1] but little bit confused.
[1] http://markmail.org/message/3gqadtky66yttfe6

The conclusion is CLA is not mandatory for accepting contributions but
better to take explicit ICLA before accepting a large/important contribution (?)

Thanks,
Makoto

John,

As you mentioned, we (hivemall) did not get "Reporting reminder emails".
Hivemall entered Incubation on Sept 13.

I refer this file for monthly reports duty.
http://incubator.apache.org/report-groups.txt

Should Hivemall (and Spot) be nominated for monthly report
for the first three months of Incubation? (not listed though).

Okey. It's to be done after entering Incubator.

BTW, do you have in mind any good example/project following the

2016-08-24 Thread Makoto Yui
Roman, Justin, and Marvin,

Thank you for the comments.
I could make sure what we should do during the Incubation process for IP issues.

Those five guys are not AIST employees but individuals who sent
patches to Hivemall.
So, we need to get SGA from them accroding to
http://incubator.apache.org/guides/mentor.html#initial-import-code-dump

Some of them made very small patches (e.g., fixing typo or so).
We would like to discuss about it in the Incubation process, later.

Sure. I'll list all copyrights and licenses in NOTICE file and LICENSE
file respectively, following the way in
https://github.com/apache/spark/blob/master/NOTICE#L86
https://github.com/apache/spark/blob/master/LICENSE#L232

Just in case, I'll clarify in the goal section of our Incubation proposal:
 - get I-CLA from the initial committers
 - get SGA from other individuals not listed in the initial committers and AIST.
 - list all copyrights and licenses in NOTICE file and LICENSE file,
respectively.

The above tasks are to be done during the incubation.

Any other concerns to be discussed?

Thanks,
Makoto

There are 5 individuals, excluding project committers, sent pull requests
to the project before moving to ALv2: smly, y-tag, ryukobayashi,
spiritloose, and takahi-i.

All of contributions are recorded in github and there are no other contributions
that are not listed in github.

So, I can try to get I-CLA from them, in addition to committer's I-CLA sign,
in the incubation process. I think I can get permissions from them.

Is I-CLA adequate or e-mail based confirmation is enough?

I think what we have to do is listing Copyrights and Licenses in NOTICE file
as seen in
https://github.com/apache/spark/blob/master/NOTICE#L86

Is my understanding right?

All copyrights are left in the code and borrowed codes are licensed
MIT/BSD/Apache licenses only. We can list them to NOTICE file.

I never borrowed or used GPL/LGPL/MPL licensed codes, always taking care of it.

To summarize your concern, we have three things to do during the
incubation process:
1) getting SGA from AIST,
2) getting I-CLA from contributors/committers, and
3) listing dependencies in the NOTICE file.

We can remove or rewrite if there are some codes that should not be used
in the Apache project, e.g., GPL licensed one.
I think there are not such code in Hivemall though.

Thanks,
Makoto

Hi Marvin,

I'm going to answer your two questions.

> 1) Who were the copyright holders at the time of relicensing?

At the time of re-licensing, the copyright holder was AIST,
my employer at that time.

> 2) How was their permission secured?

Hivemall was at that time my solo research project at AIST.
I took a permission to change the license to ALv2 from AIST then.

I did some paper works and I'm still holding it.
Unfortunately, it's written in Japanese.

They also agreed to move Hivemall to Apache Incubator.

I'm considering to take Software Grant Agreement sign from them
in the incubation process.

Does it wipe out your concerns?

Thanks,
Makoto

The initial release was LGPL v2.1 but I changed the project license
to APL v2 on Mar 16, 2015.
The current codebase does not have dependencies to LGPL.

I guess there are some other projects migrated from LGPL to ALv2
before becoming to Apache projects.

For example, Apache OpenOffice was LGPL in the past release
before joining to Apache.
https://www.openoffice.org/license.html

> 2. whether the 5 initial committers make sense given that
> there's a total of 15 contributors as per GitHub stats.

The current 5 initial committers are who made significant feature improvements
(e.g., pig/spark support) or continuously contributing patches to Hivemall.

Some of intern students of my company are contributed significantly to
the project
but they are not contributing continuously after the intern period.
So, I'm not selecting them as initial committers.

Our intent of this incubator proposal is building a diverse developer community
following the Apache meritocracy model.

We welcome external contributions (including past intern students) and
plan to elect committers from those who contributed significantly to the project
during and/or after the incubation process.

Thanks,
Makoto
