Are you working with a livecd/codebase/etc that matches your architecture (hint: intel-based live CDs aren't compatable with amd64's)? Sounds like two things aren't on the same wavelength. If you actually use quotes, you don't need the backslash. You can also use tab-completion, if available, by just typing "Program" and hitting tab. Yes, I've noticed that too. Seems to be happening here with gnome 2.10. Previous versions seem to be fine. [digest-mode reply] (and much belated, at that! -- catching up.) From: Christoph Eckert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, 8 Jun 2005 00:51:10 +0200 To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Don't hesitate to ask me . Christoph, A small request, if you would be so kind. (Or anyone else who feels that they have really good knowledge here! :) ) I am trying to -manufacture- the time to get several synths & drum machines & patchbays and other such digital sound equipment, as well as some guitars & basses, mics, line-in, and possibly other stuff, set up with my computer. Target software includes recorders, playback, sound-processing of *all* sorts, mixers, librarians, and so on. Composing music, basically. (Sheet music format preferred as basis, but will eventually need *all* sorts of views, roll, event, &&&c.) And I kind-of expect to also get into video edit/mix/create in the future. What I -don't- expect my computer to be is the home-entertainment system itself -- one, I'm an audiophile (on a budget, alas!!), two, therefrom I do note that CDA does poorly with cymbals, chimes, and all other really high things & overtones -- though it wins *everything* else!, three, obviously, I have little taste for MP3, and four, I like *BIG* screens at a comfortable distance (& sound!). I even have a stereo -right- next to the computer. And then there is just the whole entire everyday world of computer playback, sounds, etc. I can do most of this in MonopleSoft WhinedoZZZe, but I am trying to move to Linux (and after a year and several distros I decided on Gentoo), and I will want better tools for almost everything; heck, just good tools for lots of all this -- only bought a couple of ~expensive WhinedoZZZe packages, and after I find what I need/want, I may give those away... OK!, all that in mind for future-thought reference, the following: OSS seems to be dead, ALSA is said by some to be dying, ARTS looks like a do-(almost)-everything, but a few lacks, DMIX looks like 'almost there, with limits', JACK is a playback(?) enhancer for 1+ of the above, SKYPE looks like a record tool. I know I got at least some of this wrong! So, since I will -- hopefully! -- in the next few weeks start worrying about all this (kde is silent for the last few weeks, but did have sound)... What I am asking for now is the 'everyday' stuff, with some idea of long-term conflicts/issues/pluses/&c. What I need to know is what works-//collides-with what, and the features/abilities of each, so I can decide what I will need, and maybe not fiddle-faddle too much with installing-&-testing-&-removing-&-... to have it right. What are the features & abibities of each of the above, generaly & specifically? More to the point, could you please point me to the best places/docos to find all this out for myself? Maybe the home pages &/or other -definitive- sites? And for any other softwares that you feel I should know about! Environment: Shuttle AN35N/nForce2/400/ultra/MCP mobo, AMD XP 2700+, 1GB, 200GB (plus removables), ATI AIW9600 dually, CL SB Live! in PCI slot, kernel is basically the 2004.3 / 2.6.11-r4 install with PickledOnion for now -- will probably not do over one or two general updates a year, and not too many selected updates; if it works so that I can work & play, leave it alone! WhinedoZZZe has a lotta parts: poor tools means need good organization. For Linux, I use a simplified: BootMagic in MBR (may replace w/grub), hda3 (inside 8GB 1024Cyl) = /boot, hda14 = 2G swap, hda15 = 37+G /, hdb4 (after 8G-limited extended for DOS) = 70+G, to mount as /70g (call it 'work'...). Basically, I keep all data on hdb4. Certainly all massive &/or crucial stuff gets copied there D*** quickly. Before *ANY* OS changes, or almost any installs in WhinedoZZZe, I back the affected part to hdd5, JIC it becomes aflicted. (~114 Actual Gig; hdd1 is tiny, hidden, F16 (bootable JIC hda & hdb get wonked) primary; "that's all, folks!") Bottom line: have 1-or-more DATA parts, best on another hd, keep/copy all -data- there, <8G, <1024Cyl /boot will boot *anywhere*, and back-up affected before lest aflicted by. [gentoo-user] Bad NFS performance
Hello all, I am getting quite sick of my self and NFS. I´ve read many posts at forums.gentoo.org, I´ve googled, I´ve tested and tested and tested... No help could be found. The problem is not unique as it seems. I have an r/w speed against the NFS-server going from ~200kb/sec to 2mb/sec. I can´t predict or find a cause for the strange speed changes. I have three computers set up: Aquarius is my main work station (AMD XP 3200+, 1 gig ram) Leo is my file server (AMD 1700+, 630 meg ram) Aries is for TV-out (AMD 1700+, 512 meg ram) All connected via a switched 100mbit network. All have 100mbit NICs. Netperf is telling me this: aquarius hermes # netperf -H leo TCP STREAM TEST to leo Recv SendSend Socket Socket Message Elapsed Size SizeSize Time Throughput bytes bytes bytessecs.10^6bits/sec 87380 16384 1638410.00 89.61 And when I do the same from/to all others the results are quite the same. So, no problem with the network. Next up NFS. I have now tried so many different combinations at my /etc/fstab that I don´t know what is up and down: It currently looks like this: aquarius hermes # cat /etc/fstab | grep nfs leo:/home/files /home/hermes/philez nfs rw,users,auto,hard,intr,tcp,retrans=5,rsize=1024,wsize=1024 I´ve tried rsize and wsize from 1024 up to 32768 (1 through 32 * 1024). I´ve tried it in combination with sync and async. Here I find async working best. The file server (Leo) has a 120 gig HD with DMA enabled: leo linux # hdparm -t /dev/hdc /dev/hdc: Timing buffered disk reads: 88 MB in 3.02 seconds = 29.15 MB/sec So there should not be a I/O related problem either. I also run Samba on it, and when I am in Windows, filetransfers are as expected on 100mbit network (haven´t even mesured them as they work fine). Can anyone please give me any hints or advices on how to proceed with this problem? Best regards, Andreas Karlsson pgprVgpW0Qkn7.pgp Description: PGP signature

If not, then when root logs in (either normally, or via an 'su -'), it looks like the console characteristics are set via /etc/bash/bashrc (but I've just upgraded to bash 3, so this may be a new setup than bash 2.05). Anyway, I notice that the relevant section of this file reads as follows: # Set colorful PS1 only on colorful terminals. # dircolors --print-database uses its own built-in database # instead of using /etc/DIR_COLORS. Try to use the external file # first to take advantage of user additions. use_color=false safe_term=${TERM//[^[:alnum:]]/.} # sanitize TERM if [[ -f /etc/DIR_COLORS ]] ; then grep -q "^TERM ${safe_term}" /etc/DIR_COLORS && use_color=true elif type -p dircolors >/dev/null ; then if dircolors --print-database | grep -q "^TERM ${safe_term}" ; then use_color=true fi fi if ${use_color} ; then if [[ ${EUID} == 0 ]] ; then PS1='\[\033[01;31m\]\h \[\033[01;34m\]\W \$ \[\033[00m\]' else PS1='\[\033[01;[EMAIL PROTECTED] \[\033[01;34m\]\w \$ \[\033[00m\]' fi else if [[ ${EUID} == 0 ]] ; then # show root@ when we don't have colors PS1='[EMAIL PROTECTED] \W \$ ' else PS1='[EMAIL PROTECTED] \w \$ ' fi fi Notice that the first line of this section is usecolor=false? Maybe for some reason /etc/DIR_COLORS is not being recognized (which would then change the setting to use_color=true, or for some other reason your terminal is not being recognized as able to use color. Personally, I would just copy my user's ~/.bashrc to /root/bashrc, make any appropriate changes (I like to distinguish my root colors and prompt from the user's, but they're otherwise the same, mostly). In fact, that's what I pretty much did, because iirc, root didn't have a ~/.bashrc originally. Anyway, then I would just . ~/.bashrc from a root terminal, and get on with my life. I'm sure there's a more elegant way around this, but my geekishness does not extend to futzing around with whether there's a DIR_COLORS, figuring out why the root terminal only won't notice it, and digging through obscure config files to change what's probably a one-line setting. ~/.bashrc trumps all of them, so I just use that. Sorry, no idea, but I would think that you could backup the contents to some removeable media (like a CD or DVD), and *then* delete the directory-- if you wanted to reinstall any of the packages, you could just copy the package from the CD to /usr/portage/distfiles. Go to the NVidia site, download the current release of their drivers, run the driver and follow the instructions of the readme to make it work, I tried NVidia support from portage, but found the installer from NVidia very useful and more easy... It will compile a module for you (if it can't find one). Point the xorg.conf as the readme says and you're done. (I have to do this every time I recompile the kernel, but that's not an operation you do every day). In addition, it puts some extra commented flags at the xorg.conf that may help you. Re: [gentoo-user] What's with all the config file updates???
I don't know about there being a manual but one way is to have etc-update show you the differences - that shows what's being taken out and what's added. Second look through the files in /etc/conf.d of which there are many new ones. In etc-update you can do an interactive merge which lets you choose whether you want the new or old stuff. I did that and didn't loose anything. Although etc-update seems like a kludge it's still one of the better ways to handle updating and not - as in some distros - a) blow away all the users changes for the new or b) don't add any of the changes some of which may be desired. The etc-update seems to make the best of something that's tough to do - automate as much as possible updates to user changed config files. It's better than manual editing and copy and paste. Is there a description somewhere that I can read? I don't want to dump *ALL* my old rc.conf settings before I know what they're being replaced with. On my system it takes a bit longer, I think maybe 20 seconds, and I didn't notice any difference between calling it immediately after a boot or after that. My machine is quiet old, though (800Mhz Duron with with 128MB RAM). I agree it's not much after emerging openoffice or mozilla, but it is much if you need to install ten perl modules, which consists basically of copying some files, and ldconfig is run after every one of them for nothing. [gentoo-user] xorg load module error
Hi all, Can anyone give me a hand with this? I did an emerge update and kernel recompile the other day and since then I cant run xorg. I've changed a few things in the xorg.conf file but nothing seems to help. I've even tried some different use flags to see if that was it, but so far I've got nothing. The only things I changed in the kernel was add a few modules for iptables so I could run snort. I did my `emerge nvidia-kernel madwifi-driver` after the kernel compile so it shouldn't be missing the nvidia driver. Here's the output for merge --pretend -v xorg-x11: [ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1 -3dfx -3dnow +bitmap-fonts -cjk +debug -dlloader -dmx -doc -font-server +hardened -inscure-drivers -ipv6 -minimal +mmx -nls +opengl +pam -sdk -sse -static +truetype-fonts +type1-fonts (-uclibc) +xprint +xv I noticed that the changelog said something about sse no longer being blocked, and I use to have that as a use flag, but I took it out to see if it files anything. I also noticed that google brought up a couple issues with +hardened, but I removed it without any change. I still get the same error. Anyone got any ideas? I took another look at the /etc/pcmcia/network script, and it seems that it will run a the '/etc/pcmcia/wireless' script if it exists first, which will try to set the channel if you have one specified in /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts. So, there seems to be a disconnect between the pcmcia-cs scripts and the baselayout scripts on how the wireless options should be specified and loaded. >>Ok, this message happens if "iwlist eth1 scanning" doesn't produce any >>output on stdout. So, as the message says, the 'official' ways to get around this is to set: essid_eth1="any" or: prefered_aps_eth1=( "Speeder" ) associate_order_eth1="forcepreferredonly" or a couple of other methods that don't sound as interesting. The comments in wireless.example have the full documentation. There is also the brute-force method, which is to remove the iwconfig module from the eth1 module list, and create a preup function in /etc/conf.d/net that associates the wireless before ifconfig or the dhcp client runs. -Richard -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Well, regarding when ldconfig should be run, the answer is after anything that installs libraries or updates /etc/ld.so.conf. As to when portage runs ldconfig, well, it seems it will run it in the following circumstances: 1. If an ebuild specifically calls out env-update. 2. After each ebuild, unless the package has been downgraded, in which case makelinks is set to 'False'. I'm not sure I understand this logic... 3. After packages are unmerged 4. In a very specific case after all packages are emerged...the logic is a bit too much for me to decipher without stepping through with a debugger, or adding a bunch of print statements. In a terminal, do an la /path/to/ut2004 and look at the permissions of the folder and the files. Obviously, owned by root (normal, since root probably installed it), but who is the group owner? That should usually be 'games'. If the group owner is not the 'games' group, change the folder's ownership recursively so that the 'games' group rather than the 'root' group owns the folder as well as the files it contains. If the group owner is the 'games' group, you should verify that your user is a member of that group, and if not, add your user to the 'games' group, which should solve the issue. If the group owner is the 'games' group, and the user is a member of the 'games' group, make sure that the group has rights to read, write, and execute the files in the folder. Sometimes games install with the right ownership, but the wrong permissions. Hope this helps. Holly -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] revdep-rebuild badness
I'm trying to do a revdep-rebuild -pv (pretend, verbose) however I get errors, and I can't complete it. What should I do? # revdep-rebuild -pv Checking reverse dependencies... Packages containing binaries and libraries broken by any package update, will be recompiled. Collecting system binaries and libraries... using existing /root/.revdep-rebuild.1_files. Collecting complete LD_LIBRARY_PATH... using existing /root/.revdep-rebuild.2_ldpath. Checking dynamic linking consistency... using existing /root/.revdep-rebuild.3_rebuild. Starting rebuild... emerge --oneshot --nodeps -pv =app-office/openoffice-bin-1.9.104 =media-sound/timidity++-2.13.0-r1 =media-video/xine-ui-0.99.3 =net-im/centericq-4.20.0-r1 =xfce-extra/xfce4-showdesktop-0.3.0 .. These are the packages that I would merge, in order: Calculating dependencies - emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "=media-sound/timidity ++-2.13.0-r1". Result is not OK, you have following choices: - if emerge failed during build, fix the problems and re-run revdep-rebuild or - use -X or --package-names as first argument (try to rebuild package, not exact ebuild - ignores SLOT!) or - set ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~" and/or /etc/portage/package.unmask (and remove /root/.revdep-rebuild.5_order to be evaluated again) or - modify the above emerge command and run it manually or - compile or unmerge unsatisfied packages manually, remove temporary files and try again (you can edit package/ebuild list first) To remove temporary files, please run: rm /root/.revdep-rebuild*.?_* -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
