Re: [gentoo-ppc-user] emerge kde
Hi Mark, On a G3 700MHz 256MB, before they modularize, it took about 9 hours for base system: 3h QT 3h kdelibs 3h kdebase If you have a faster machine, I would suggest using it to build packages with distcc and, if necessary, cross-compilers. [gentoo-user] Change in kernel netfilter config causes an error
Hi All, I just compiled kernel-2.6.16-gentoo-r3 and it now causes an iptables error when the machine boots. Any ideas how I can fix it? Here is some supporting information. Boot error looks like this: = # /etc/init.d/iptables restart * Loading iptables state and starting firewall ... iptables-restore v1.3.4: iptables-restore: unable to initializetable 'nat' Error occurred at line: 8 Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information. = Assuming that line 8 above is from the /etc/init.d/iptables script, this is what line 8 says: = iptables_name=${SVCNAME} = Thanks in advance for any suggestions. -- Regards, Mick -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Hello list: I decided to get sound working on this box yesterday. Everything seemed to be working fine until I decided to update alsa. I updated all alsa components I could find. This is always a risk when using make oldconfig, and it's why the docs advise you to avoid using it between major kernel version bumps (2.4 to 2.6). In practice, I find it useful even in that case, so long as you then make menuconfig to check through the options, and add missing ones. [gentoo-user] Sound problems on catherine.espersunited.com
The sound stopped working on my wife's computer about a week ago. I've run every test I can think of and can't seem to track the problem down. /etc/init.d/alsasound starts up fine. I can run alsamixer on her computer just fine (on my computer, when ALSA isn't working I can't open alsamixer); she has the volume control applet running on her panel, but there simply is no sound. I looked over dmesg, but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Generally I would answer 'no', but this depends upon how much debugging you want to do. The splitdebug setting is sufficient to get good stack traces in the event of a program crash. The debug USE flag will do different things for different packages. But it generally falls into one of two categories: 1. Enable extra logging of the package. For example, emerging wine without debug will disable call tracing, making it difficult to file bug reports or figure out what native vs windows dlls you should be using for a particular program. 2. Enable extra checks in the code. Things like assertions, type checks, and array boundary checks. These extra checks can have a significant impact on performance. The glib and gtk packages fall into this category. -Richard -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Something's amiss with the script then, given the latest kernel chages. Bingo! Your fw_script.sh contains (line 72): iptables -t nat -F POSTROUTING which fails because you haven't compiled NAT into your kernel. Comment it out and hopefully your script will work. You probably know this already, but once you've set up your rules (using your script), and gentoo's init script has saved them, there's no need to run your script again. The rules will be reloaded from the saved file by the init script whenever it's restarted. However, the init script also saves the rules when it's stopped, e.g. on reboot, overwriting previously saved rules. It's easy while setting things up to accidentally save the wrong rule set. Second: How can I specifically re-build a package with changed USE flags? [gentoo-user] nvidia-kernel vs. gentoo-sources
Hi, I'm having a problem using nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r5 after the my recent kernel-update from gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r1 to gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r3. The few things, that are compiled when emerging nvidia-kernel, compile successfully but emerge complains about missing symboles (remap_page_range and pci_find_class). Via Google I found out that nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-rX had similar problems with pci_find_class, which was fixed eventually (that function seems to have been renamed to pci_get_class). That one seems to be back along with a new friend (the function remap_page_range has been renamed to remap_pfn_range and expects a different number of parameters I think). During emerge the script conftest.sh from the nvidia-kernel-package should take care of at least remap_page_range, but calling this script fails. I found heavy differences between conftest.sh-scripts from the currend nvidia-kernel and from older versions. To me it seems, the patching in the current version is not done properly. Still I'm too unexperienced with patching in order to do it myself. Does anyone experience same problems or know about a solution to that? I tried all newer versions of nvidia-kernel. Some didn't compile or didn't load afterwards while one of them did both successfully but seriously crashed when starting X (luckily remote-login still worked). [gentoo-user] Summer of code!
Hi potential students! I wanted to give you all a heads up, as of today we are accepting student applications for Summer of Code. So if you are a student and you fancy writing some code this summer you should go check out Google's Student FAQ[1], Gentoo's project ideas[2] (keep in mind that you can come up with your own idea, if it's great then we'll dance with joy and accept it!) and if you are eligible and keen, you should head over to http://code.google.com/soc/student.html and apply! I hope to see plenty of new applications filling up our mentor interface! I can promise that it will be a fun and worthwhile experience for all who participate! Are you already a Gentoo developer but want to participate as a student? Don't be discouraged, you can apply and be accepted as long as you are not mentoring for any organisation (including Gentoo) and as long as you work on a project different to what you normally do (ie. if you normally work on portage, don't apply for a portage project during SoC). If you have any questions, drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or stop by #gentoo-soc on irc.freenode.net Cheers, Christel Dahlskjaer [1]http://code.google.com/soc/studentfaq.html [2]http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/devrel/user-relations/summerofcode/index.xml -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
