This is supposed to happen (one GIMP instance only). What operating
system are you using? Where did you get your GIMP binary from?

I am using the stable downloaded version from gimp.org, and I am using winxp
If I select multiple files it opens one instance only(my mistake
earlier), but if GIMP is already open and then I rightclick and open
another file with gimp it opens up a new gimp instance.

I'll chime in here regarding my situation...

Windows XP. GIMP 2.4.5. Binary is Jernej's
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gimp-2.4.5-i686-setup.exe
Windows file association (for .bmp for my tests) is to gimp-2.4
(C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin\gimp-2.4.exe).
Multiple instances of GIMP arise.

If I associate to gimpwin-remote (C:\Program
Files\GIMP-2.0\bin\gimp-win-remote.exe) then only one instance of GIMP
appears. However, there also appears a message in its own window: GIMP
Message Opening 'C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin\gimp-2.4.exe' failed:
unknown file type (which can be closed without harm).

I don't select multiple images to open at once, but open one image from the
file manager, then click on another image to open it. Interestingly, the
GIMP Message error appears only when the first image is opened. If I close
the error window and open subsequent images, the error does not appear again
(unless I close GIMP completely, and then it appears again for the first
image opened).

[Gimp-user] Gimp possibilities

2008-03-25 Thread Lap1994
Gimp is a very good image editor. It can edit scaned image, eg photos.
Paint scaned drawings, manga skecths or inked drawings. Or simply create a
image from the nothing.

Gimp have very good filters created by very good developers, and very good
tools. Have blur, motion blur, noise, each filter can be used for
diferrents things, depending of the wanted result. Have pencil, brush and
a spray for paint, each can be used, too, for diferrents things.

Some techniques can be used to improve your images using Gimp resources,
eg yellow supernova + blur = sun or white spray + cian background = sky
with clouds. Using some of these you can create images from nothing.

You can use layers to add nice effects to your image or organize diferrent
things, such as house and scenary.

A good and simple recourse is the text with effect. You draw a WHITE text,
click in it layer, cut, paste in the MASK of other layer. Finished, text
with effect.

Yes, is really a very good image editor and manipulator. But only work
when you know what you are doing. If do not know, just train until know.

It looks interesting. It appears on the surface to be based on some version of
GIMP but they seem to have made some substantial changes behind the scenes.

It is only for the Mac, has a number of UI tweaks (ie. icon for active tool
larger than the other tool icons), uses something called Core Image (their
version of a GEGL type library), makes use of a GPU, and they have done a nice
job on the manual.

Other versions of GIMP for sale are mostly just repackaged or rebranded
versions with little (if any) changes. This does not appear to be the case
with this version.

My opinion is that if you can get it on sale, get it. I got mine in a
macheist bundle, which cost me something like $50 total and included
pixelmator, vector designer (another interesting yet young graphic
program) and a bunch of other stuff. Would I pay full price for it?
No. I hate to say that because I'm sure the guys that are working on
it could sure use the money - but it's just not ready. If I could get
a native OS X version of GIMP, I'd pay $60 for it in a heartbeat.
