Merry Christmas!! Great Christmas present for Friends of Wilber & Company.

I've got a question: can anyone tell me what the story is with Guash?

I'm running a dual boot system (aren't we all...) with w98se and
Mdk7.1, and so have the Gimp on both systems. As I have an old UMAX 1200S
w/fauxSCSI, I use the twain app with the Windoz Gimp 1.1.28, which has the
Guash, dunno whether earlier versions did. Very convenient and useful.

Didn't have occasion to look for it in the linux version, even though I've
puttered around with several versions, but I did notice it was not there in
1.1.30. I guess I assumed it would be there in 1.2.0, but it's not. So now
I'm curious, what's the situation? I know there's been some discussion, but
I suppose I'm asking for current plans, views, etc.

I didn't have a couple of things that the configure file looked for, one of
which was the Perl include (the other was the gtkxhtml which means I have no
help file...). Is that why I don't have Guash? If so, I'll round up all
that stuff and recompile 1.2.0, 'cause it's a neat thing to have.

Also, I don't know whether it's just me, but it certainly seems that the
last few patches have made the Gimp noticeably faster. In any case, it's
impressive!!

Thanks in advance,

Bill Tallman

My first question to this list (also about gifs and transparency) was
stupid as well. People here were very kind.

As others have mentioned, you need to convert to an indexed format before
saving as gif. But as your later message shows, you seem to be running a
version of the GIMP which has very few formats compiled in. Did you
compile yourself, or did you download the binary? Were there notes about
that binary where you got it that covered this?

What really supprised me was that I didn't see XCF among the list of
options posted.

Anyway, just in case you are going to ask the question I first asked
(though it doesn't sound like it) you can't "feather to transparent" with
a GIF because a GIF only has one bit for transparency, JPEGs don't have
transparency at all, so that leaves either for web documents

  (1) Using PNGs
  (2) Using non-transparent GIFs, but with different backgrounds
  for each potential page.

Of course, if you are not trying to feather to transparency, then this is
all moot advice.

Hi,

Depending on how you installed GIMP you may need to install a 'gimp-nonfree' deb, rpm,
etc. This is the case for any Debian ( or Debian based ) system.
If you installed from source then it is possible that you do not have the required
libs for gif support on your system.

Thanks for the help about rgb - I didn't know that. Problem is, even after
I've indexed it, and kept it below a palette of 255 colors, I'm still
getting "unknown file type" when I try to save it as a gif. The only options
available are CEL, PNG, PSD, AND TGA (ugh!) It simply won't open and files
with a .gif extension.

Thank you again for putting up with me

Re: Gifs and transparency

2000-12-25 Thread Carol Spears

I think that you are trying to save an RGBed image as a gif. Gimp will
not do that.

Work with the image in RGB. When you are ready to save it, use
Image>Mode>Indexed. That will give you some interesting
possiblilities. Once the image is indexed, it will save as a gif.

If I am not reading your problem right, you will need to send more
details about the conditions that made you think that gif format doesn't
work on the Gimp.

The Gimp doesn't have a problem with gifs. Gifs have problems.

Gifs and transparency

2000-12-25 Thread Zoe Mamalingas

Hi,

Kinda new to Gimp since I only downloaded it a few days ago, and I know this
is probably a stupid question but...

I'm trying to make transparent gifs for my page, and it doesn't seem to
support gif format at all. RGB mode is also out, and I heard that Gimp is
having trouble with gifs or something? Anyways, if that is the problem
and there's no way of making it support gifs, are there and other file
formats that support transparency?
