conversion
hi all some days ago there was a discussion about generating/converting different formats on this list. so i thought i might ask this off topic question: does anybody knows a tool running on linux or better solaris, that converts hpgl2 files into eps? thanx for any suggestion robert
Re: Speed of Gimp
hi i'm wondering if jean-louis meant that he compiled his LINUX system for multiprozessor support or GIMP. if he meant his system i think he couldd have 10 processors in his machine and it wouldn't change anything on gimp. only if he would start working on two images at the same time the system will use the power off the two processors. gimp has no tools to use the strenght of both. am i wrong? please tell me, cause i also use a multiprocessor machine (perfect with radiance for rendering, but this soft implements some routines to use multiprocessor power). Did you have lots of I/O yourself? That would explain the difference. I have a tile cache size of 128MB. 8000x2000 image at 4 bytes/pixel is 64MB. I did load the image it into a fresh gimp and just did a gaussian blur and an undo: # ps avx|grep gimp 2952 pts/3S 0:26 108640 1702 167093 166460 64.7 gimp # ls -l /localvol/root/.gimp/gimpswap.2952 -rw--- 1 root root 191926272 Nov 28 14:26 /localvol/root/.gimp/gimpswap.2952 What on earth requires MORE than 320MB to store a 64MB image + 1 undo step? That makes 5 copies of the image (1 image, 1 undo, 3 projection buffers or what is wrong here?) Mo and 2 processors. So my question is : What can i do to have better results with Gimp ? more memory probably ;) can you verify that (most) of the speed penalty comes from added i/o due to bad memory usage? -- -==- | ==-- _ | ---==---(_)__ __ __ Marc Lehmann +-- --==---/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / [EMAIL PROTECTED] |e| -=/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ XX11-RIPE --+ The choice of a GNU generation | |
Re: Impossible to move the layer
hi there you have to add an alpha channel (layer - add alpha channel) to the basic layer in order to change its position. regards robert COUTIER Eric wrote: Hello everybody, I've noted that the original layer is impossible to move. When you click on the layer in the layers window, the "bottom" and "top" arrow are grayed (even if you've created another layer in the image after). The only way i've found to can move this layer is to duplicate it then delete it. The same thing occur in Paint Shop Pro but when you rename the original layer (for example from "background" to "toto layer"), then you can move this layer. Perhaps it's a good idea, no ?
Re: True Space
beside blender you might have a look at : radiance for professional/realistic light simulation (you need to "code" and/or have a look at OCTREE ( www.octree.de )to build the 3D data - export to radiance file format) : http://radsite.lbl.gov/radiance/HOME.html another choice could be povray, but i have no experience with that tool. regards robert p.s.: i thought i send this information yesterday, but i didn't get the message back through the mailing list. so sorry if this is double information. Re: Pdf, eps, ps? (Was: xcf -- eps)
hi there don't know what kind of data you want to add to your pdf files, but what about Ghostscript? it hink it does a good job in converting *.ps into a lot of formats, includiding pdf. robert Ok, my point seemingly didn't make it through...when saying "portable documents", I was more aiming for the pdf graphically-, layout-portable than a multiplatform-, readable-on-all-platforms-portable. You get my point? How can I in a good way under linux (with gimp?) create portable text/graphical productions? /Carl-Johan
Re: Pdf, eps, ps? (Was: xcf -- eps)
searching in the direction of illustrator i would like to promote "sketch" again. it's certainly not the perfect tool with all functions like some of the classic window/mac stuff, but it's quit promissing. it can combine pixel/vector graphics with simple text etc. it uses layers and it has an pdf export filter. perhaps that's what your looking for? http://sketch.sourceforge.net/ have fun with linux robert Carl-Johan Sveningsson wrote: I'm looking for _is_ something like Illustrator/PageMaker/Distiller...It's aiming very high, but sad as it is, from your replies, nothing such seems to be present under linux (for free at least), only hard-to-use, crappy, half-way solutions are? I *can* live with that, don't misinterpret me, I was just pushing it to see if maybe someone maybe knew better than me and could give us all some hope. Thank you all. /Carl-Johan
Re: Welcome to CubicDesign.com
I dunno.. I looked at the page in netscape and it looked very good to me. Lenka. same for me (linux, "old" netscape 4.7) i think this discussion will never find to an end, cause unfortunatly there is no perfect solution for each browser and by far not for each user. but i would be glad if anybody on this list could enlighten me and give me a way to create text content wich shows up the same size in all browsers. i'm not a person demanding "standards", but i think in this case i would love it. regards robert -- Robert SchiffersPartner of GbR hns [EMAIL PROTECTED] GbR hns Digital Architecturehttp://www.h-n-s.de OCTREE CAD for Linux, Win,etc. http://www.octree.de
blur similar to layer mask
hi is there a possibility to influence a filter (e.g. blur) with a black and white gradient similar to the layer mask? i would like to blur an image so that the border gets unsharp but the center doesn't change. thanx for any help robert schiffers p.s.: this list is great. i learn every day new stuff. thanx a lot :-) -- Robert SchiffersPartner of GbR hns [EMAIL PROTECTED] GbR hns Digital Architecturehttp://www.h-n-s.de OCTREE CAD for Linux, Win,etc. http://www.octree.de
Re: new user
hi kompukit work...it keeps saying unable to load script-fu fonts...or can't find fontsI thought gimp was installed with everything working...? the problem is, that the fonts which have been predefined in the script-fu menus, must not be part of your Linux installation. to test the scripts, check the available fonts on your system and change the font type in the script-fu menu. to get more fonts (if you've got windows installed on your machine, all true type fonts you've got there) check out the Xfstt True-Type Font Server: http://www.linuxdoc.org/LDP/LG/issue28/ayers1.html http://filewatcher.org/sec/xfstt.html hope it helps robert -- Robert SchiffersPartner of GbR hns [EMAIL PROTECTED] GbR hns Digital simulation http://www.h-n-s.de of architecture OCTREE CAD for Linux, Win,etc. http://www.octree.de
Re: Oval Boards
i would do it with the "path tool". first make a selection of your oval. choose "to path" in the selection menu. it will create a path of the actual selection. you can find the "path menu" in the "layer and channel" menu. now you have created a path, you can stroke it with the brush, color and mode you want. hope that helps regards robert p.s. : -perhaps you should create a new layer to put the boarder on. -you can use the path several times with differnt brush-types and colors to create some nice effects like neon etc. -this works in gimp 1.1.11, don't know about older versions. Re: selection+-
hello hago, hi friends of gimp, just a last appendix to this theme: Perhaps I should append that I use KDE and I originally had set in the "Window Configurations": "Focus follows mouse" . With this configuration and with "Classic sloppy focus" it still doesn't work. It only works with : "Click to focus". in the new KDE 1.1.2 you´ll find in the Control Center - Windows - Properties supplementary to the setting "focus follows etc..." a radio button that says something like "fix window focus" (sorry, i´ve got the german version). if you enable this setting, you can also choose "focus follows mouse" and the selection mode in gimp works fine. excuse my amateurish attempt i suggested in a previouse mail (reinstall...). but finally it showed me that the problem was related to the wm and not to gimp. thanx to jakub steiner who showed up the right way ;-) have fun with gimp robert -- Robert SchiffersPartner of GbR hns [EMAIL PROTECTED] GbR hns Digital visualisation of architecture http://h-n-s.de OCTREE CAD software for Linux,Win,etc. http://www.octree.de begin:vcard n:Schiffers;Robert x-mozilla-html:FALSE GbR hns -architectural graphics and digital visualisation http://www.h-n-s.de org:GbR hns adr:;; version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] note;quoted-printable:OCTREE -cad system for Linux,Windows, etc. http://www.octree.de=0D=0A= x-mozilla-cpt:;0 fn:Robert Schiffers end:vcard

hi alex, hago, friends of gimp i know perfectly how the selection add/substract works, but like hago ziegler i´ve got the problem with the new version 1.11. two friends of mine are running the same version on nearly the same system and there it works perfectly. so i thought it may be a setting like those made in the "menurc" or "gimprc" files. it makes me mad, please help! regards robert
