yes, we are all entitled to our opinions and to express them. and they
should only be admonished when directly related to *intentionally* causing

it would only be considered discriminatory if presented in a manner to

discriminatory, only distasteful to one who is so narrow of mind to
consider it so.

I believe that would best be accomplished by configuring your desired

usually when a setting is indicated and commented out, means that is
default and is set, ie:

# (snap-to-path no)
snap-to-path is set to "no" and that is default.

gimp creates the directory /tmp/gimp/2.10/ if it does not exist.

I initiated gimp to access a NEF file earlier, 12:19 my time (-5 hrs) and
it has not yet completed converting the file @ 14:18 but cpu usage
continues to decline. that said, I seldom if ever use this approach,
preferring darktable to work photos. I may utilize gimp after the fact
but with a converted jpg or tiff/png.

have no idea what "snap.gimp" is or where it comes from.

I am canceling the process to load sub nef via dt.

gud luk,

why don't you *adjust* your work flow to utilize a local rather than
attached drive and move the files to the attached drive when you have
finished?

yes, you are looking for a drive that cannot mount, not drives that *are*
mounted successfully.

that is not a problem, linux reads and saves to ntfs format fine. I have
external usb drives formatted ntfs by the manufacturer that I use for
backup and/or transport frequently.

look for a remote drive that fails to load, maybe red X on the icon.

as I do not use windows but am somewhat familiar, you have a local windows
config problem with filetypes. maybe open explorer to a directory which
contains images and right click on one. might present you with a config
option to choose.

you have:
  /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/file-darktable/file-darktable

it is provided by the gimp package. I am on openSUSE Tumbleweed:
  gimp-2.10.8-1.46.x86_64.rpm

maybe edit /home//.config/GIMP/2.10/gimprc
 and change import-raw-plug
 to
 (import-raw-plug-in
"${gimp_plug_in_dir}/plug-ins/file-darktable/file-darktable")

you might try moving /home//.config/GIMP
this will effect a clean gimp config as a new install would

maybe you need to completely remove gimp, including

gimp -> edit -> preferences -> Image Import & Export -> Raw Image Importer

it worked previous but seems the darktable importer is broken.

fwiw: I don't either. I just opened gimp. it opened into single window
mode. I unchecked "single window mode", closed and reopened and got
multiple window mode.

gimp-2.10.0 on Tumbleweed openSUSE

be well received. I am sorry your currency was ill spent.

on my openSUSE Tumbleweed gimp 2.10 opens in < 4 seconds and uses < 80 mb

it is available on openSUSE Tumbleweed and I have it installed. for the
small uses I have made, it loads quicker than 2.8 and appears more
responsive. no crashes. some difficulty finding some actions, but
nothing major.

appears a good job was done.

you mis-read or mis-understand. I did not say the "gimp community" did
not care but said that saying the lower case gimp community did not care
for any distro or operating was not applicable. also that the lower case
gimp community did not package gimp for install.

perhaps now you understand.

"The GIMP community" does not care, seem is not applicable, for any distro
or operating system. "The GIMP community" does not package or provide
packages for *any* operating system or distro. individuals donating their
time package gimp for . if gimp

packager for your system and beg him to update his packages, or pay him or
package it yourself, or install via source code, or just do without. it
is free and open source software.

not knowing flatpack, the package was probably installed using root
account and took the installer account perms and file locations. if
installed into root's home, would indeed have root perms, even as
illogical as that would be.

a rather elitist attitude, isn't it?

does a "gimpusers" subscribee have *better* standing or knowledge or
manners than "non-gimpusers-dot-com" scribers? and how would you know
that someone using their own email addr was not a "subscriber" or maybe
even a contributor/developer or someone who wanted to be?

but I may not qualify to even merit a reply :(.

you provide little information, gimp version, operating system, file type,
...

why don't you post the photo to a file sharing service somewhere and
provide a link to it so it can be investigated?

from their printers which *they* control, not you. an image does not
present dots per inch and you cannot give them something not existing. if
you/they are actually referring to pixels, ppi, use the correct term and
use it to describe the crop area of the image. that capability *is*
provided by gimp and will lead you to less confusion.

also when describing a problem, using the wrong terms leads to incorrect
assumptions for those attempting to provide you a solution.

then perhaps you should describe using correct terms so understanding is
more definitive. even adobe now uses the correct terms when describing
cropping on their web-site.

and then users incorrectly describing their problems would have a better
understanding and start providing better descriptions leading to better
and/or more precise solutions.

a white horse is not black even though it is just the hair, or could that
be called splitting

Maybe you should rethink. dpi is a printer term, not a quality term for
an image. dpi represents the number of ink dots a printer places on
paper. pixels per inch would be a measure of quality of an image.

And, reply as one would read, not *only* at the top before questions are

how did you save the file? if you wrote a jpg or png ... you have lost
your layers, they are merged, ie: you don't have a text layer to edit.

JEM stated he was using OS 10.12.2

OS != OSX
OS could be openSUSE

gimp-2.8.18-2.22.x86_64
ghostscript-9.20-2.1.x86_64
openSUSE Tumbleweed

currently published gimp is 8-bit, not 16 and does not operate/save except
8-bit. I believe unstable 2.9+ (or 2.10) does 16-bit.

maybe, appears from what information you gave that the plug-in is not
where gimp expects it to be. Move the plug-in or tell gimp where to find

No, one *should* reply to the list rather than sending multiple copies to

You may very well copy and paste from a browser, BUT, if that copy/paste
is dragging the mouse across an area to select the copy, you are ONLY
copying at screen resolution and WILL LOOSE RESOLUTION from the displayed
image. If you are copying the web address of the image and using that,
you retain the displayed image's resolution.

In order to retain the image's resolution provided it is greater than your
screen, you *must* download subj image or use it's web address with
amounts to the same.

Usually one can discern the web address of an image by right clicking upon
it, unless it is displayed by flash and then digging into the flash source
is necessary. There are apps available that will provide flash hidden
addresses.

your mail, the mail in question, was not cc'd "back to the list". It was

if I was interested, and found it necessary, I would, but not so. The OP
was and it is a simple test and really not deserving of list traffic,
imnsho.

Would YOU post that type of question here? If the OP was capable of
installing the software on his computer, *should* he not be capable of
answering his own question? Is *no-one* capable or responsible any more?

just a guess, perhaps you have a bad brush. Try removing half, if doesn't
crash, add another 1/4 (half of what is left) until you determine which is

ufraw is not a gimp program, it was originally produced by Udi Fuchs. If
you have found a problem with it, you should report it on sourceforge
where it is hosted. You should find it, google..., and follow the
instruction for windows as provided. It works on my wife's w10. I have
to problem with it as I do not run *any* version of windows.

You may wonder for a long time, but it is simple to start,
  1. from cl, gimp
  2. click on icon
  3. initiate from menu
  4. open image when gimp is set a viewer

But it *really* is heard to figure out.

There is *not* a "NEF issue" as .nef is a nikon proprietary file which
need dcraw or ufraw front end to open and pass to gimp. gimp by itself
cannot open a nef file. I don't work on windows, but linux. Partha may
have added something to his gimp packages to facilitate opening non-open
format files, but to my knowledge, gimp must call an external program to
pass nef files to it. gimp is *not* photoshop.

"nef" is a proprietary format used by Nikon and maybe other I don't know,
but gimp cannot read it. What you see the the thumbnail contained withing
the closed format file. You need to use ufraw to open an pass the file to
gimp. You didn't say what operating system you use, but instructions are
easily found using google search.

You need to use your operating system's file handling applications. Gimp

Everybody who prefers to lose information when exporting the work to jpg
instead of saving it and posesses the skill of reading could find in the
manual the way to remap the hotleys. No problem to discuss.

There's only one problem with the current model: I, for one, would love an
option to suppress the unsaved changes prompt in the event that I'm working
on a simple image file that is exported to a standard file format and has no
XCF associated with it. Such as when I'm downscaling digital photos for
 uploading to the Internet.

BUT, you are using a tool which is not build nor intended for that
audience, so you adjust or use a different tool.

I /hate/ the new Save vs. Export behavior. It is completely
non-intuitive to me, it makes my brain stumble every time I try to do
just about any of the things that I do in GIMP on a regular basis, and
it makes most of my workflows take more thought and more button clicks

I love the Gimp and have been a very happy Gimp user since 2004's v 2.0 when I
changed to Ubuntu 4.10. So with over 10 years experience as a Gimp user behind
me I too am completely frustrated and perplexed by these changes. Similarly, I
face the same workflow problems as Jonathan Kamens' 2012-05-03 00:45:16
 posting
and find that what was once pleasureable and easy job of creating and editing
png files is now an arduous task. I've been battling with 2.8 for over a year
and things are not getting any easier.

So my question to the developers is:
Has there been any futher developments to remedy this issue?

Do you really read the list, or just this one time?
