Moderately, you would still need to grow & shrink the selection because
it's not a 100% even green, so where the fuzzy select has a tolerance
so all the green can be selected, colour to alpha will make partial
transparency in places. Also, there may be tiny dots of green in the
actual coins, which aren't in reach of fuzzy select but select by
colour or colour to alpha would affect them.

Dear Liam,

Yes, the image is in RGB colour 8 bit.
What does it mean?

Colour means as opposed to greyscale (just grey, no colur allowed).

RGB means that any pixel can be in any colour, as opposed to indexed
which would mean a fixed list of colours

8-bit means  each of red,  green, blue (RGB) can take any whole number
value from 0 to 255 - this is appropriate for JPEG images for example.

With the following image I did this:

(1) open the image in gimp
(2) select the Fuzzy Select tool from the toolbox
(3) in Tool Options, make sure the threshold is good - i used 13. The
higher  this number ,the more the Fuzzy Select tool will select colours
that are not quite the one you click on.
(4) i clicked on the green background 9still with fuzzy select). This
selected eveything except the coin.
(5) i used select->grow to increase the selection by 2 pixels. This
makes sure that if e.g. there's a pet hair in the picture, it gets
selected out. But this also selects the edge of the coin, which we
don't  want.
(6) then, i did Select->shrinl and entered 1 pixel, to get back the
edge of the coin.
(7) Probably we don't want an ugly hard edge so i used Select->Feather
by 1.5 pixels to soften the edge of the selection.
(8) i did edit->cut (or Control-X), to remove the green. If you don't
have the default black and white colours selected in the two small
panels  under the toolbox, press d to reset them to defaults and then
do cut.
(9) then i did Image->Crop to Content, to get rid of the extra white
areas.
(10) finally i exported the image.

This is much faster to do than to describe. Maybe ten seconds at most.

Just before exporting ,i actually also used  Colours->Levelsand pressed
Auto Input Levels; you may not want that; it makes the dark  parts of
the image black. You can get a better result by including a photo card
(you can get them on ebay or from any photography shop) in the picture
and using the white and the black as white and black points in Levels.
It's pretty  much instant although then you have to crop the photo card
out of the picture.

Interesting coin.

[Gimp-user] Questions on 2.10.14

2020-11-30 Thread music tom via gimp-user-list
Now using version 2.10.14 on Mac OS 10.15.7.

2 Questions:

Using the Rotate feature, is there a way to automatically "Detach Dialog From
Canvas"? So you don’t have to press the up arrow button every time.

I edit JPEG files and Export them to JPEG. When I close the file it now asks
"If I want to Save the changes". Is there a way to just disable that and just
close the file without clicking "Discard Changes"?

Ok, so I think I finally experienced what you describe.  What I did was
open the image you posted the link to above in GIMP and got the prompt
to rotate or not.  This time, I chose "Keep original" instead of
"Rotate" and the image appeared in portrait orientation.  I then
exported the photo and opened it in Firefox and it appeared landscape.
So then, I opened your image again and chose "Rotate".  This time, the
image appeared in landscape orientation _in_ GIMP.  I manually rotated
it 90-degrees clockwise (I was mistaken by my previous counter-clockwise
comment :) ) and exported it.  When I opened this manually rotated image
in Firefox, it appeared in portrait orientation.

I then opened my manually rotated image in GIMP and viewed the image
metadata and saw a TON of EXIF information, including the Canon EOS
Rebel camera info (I don't have a Canon EOS camera).  You can see the
exported version of the image I manually rotated here:

https://imgur.com/a/Sc4uYU2

In that image, you should be able to see the EXIF data that was
preserved during export.  When I open that image, the one I manually
rotated, in Firefox, it opens in portrait orientation.

Based on what I'm seeing, if I manually rotate the image from landscape
to portrait orientation, everything works as desired.

Thanks for the additional information (this message and the other
message).   I actually DID download both images and I opened them in
GIMP 2.10.20 on Ubuntu 20.04 Linux.  I opened the original image in
Firefox and it was rotated by 90-degress counter-clockwise, so it
appeared like this:

https://imgur.com/a/S5RRJE8

Of course, my highlighting in red didn't appear.  :)    So, then I
opened the original photo in GIMP and I was asked if I wanted to rotate
the photo or not, as shown here:

https://imgur.com/a/eICgy7a

When I opened the rotated photo you posted the link to, the "After"
photo, GIMP prompted me to rotate the photo, as shown here:

https://imgur.com/kozuYXt

Are you getting the same prompts from GIMP, when you open the photos?
If so, which option do you choose?

Anyway, when I open the original photo in GIMP and choose "rotate", I
made NO other changes and simply exported the rotated image.  Then, I
opened that image in Firefox and it appeared correct:

https://imgur.com/a/tsgEiGF

I haven't touched ANY EXIF settings at all and when exporting from GIMP,
I used the export defaults, for JPEG, which included EXIF, XMP, and IPTC
information being saved with the file.  I think I understand your issue
with the image getting rotated unexpectedly, but I'm not necessarily
sure GIMP is at fault, at least not based on the steps I followed.

When you load the images, are you getting different results?  Which
version of GIMP are you using and on which operating system?

Thanks!

No such problem for me, and again, there are free tools to remove EXIF

     exiftool -all= {file}

Or it can just be done correctly in the primary image manipulation tool,
within the Gimp

I don't think it is coming from my Cannon Camera.

It was correct in the GIMP and sideway in most of the rest of the

You are not demonstrating anything, we need the before and after images.

the EXIF needs to be fixed..

Thanks for posting the sample images.  Please excuse me but I don't
understand what the problem is.  Is it the "After" image is _not_
supposed to appear 90-degrees rotated?  When I view the "After" image in
Firefox (and Opera), it appears rotated 90-degrees.

Thanks!

Last, the exported image is what you see on the canvas, an dis the size
of the canvas. Out-of-canvas parts are automatically cropped on export,
there is no need to flatten the image first.

That is good. But there is even less need for the crop to be broken
because someone doesn't know how to use CTL Z.

Crop is not broken... for most purposes (especially exporting the
result) it works as before. And if you set the "Delete cropped pixels"
option, just save your tool options to have it become a default for you.

This is doesn't exist in this gimp version, GIMP 2.10.

Actually, I finaly found it, under, of all place, dockable dialogs :(

BTW - what it does, in addition to just being annoying, is it
takes screen space. It is broken. It was working perectly.
This is not trivial word play. It was working. It cropped
perfectly, and now it leaves the canvas too large, produces
a confusing layer, takes up unecessary screen space, and fails
to actually crop because someone didn't know how to use CTL Z

This defines broken
http://www.nylxs.com/images/gimp_broken.jpg

If you don't like the frame of your crop then just CTL Z and recrop

Its not that hard. Even a graphic artist can do it.

My initial reaction to the GIMP 2.10 bugs on Windows vs Linux is: have
many Linux distros started offering GIMP 2.10 as an upgrade/update? I
run Mint 18.3, on my laptop, and GIMP 2.10 isn't available as an update,
yet. I don't have the time to try updating GIMP manually, so I wait for
the distribution to update the software for me. Now that I think about
it, my mom's Ubuntu 16.04 system hasn't received a GIMP 2.10 update either.

Maybe as the distros start making GIMP 2.10 available, more Linux users
will use it. I'm just thinking out loud. :)

In the "mathmap" discussion, someone stated GIMP 2.10 is strictly
64-bit. I was interested in a 32-bit Windows version as well. Oh well,
I'll just have to upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows. :)

Thanks for the sample. The 'Humor Sans' text appeared, just as you
described.

Thanks to everyone for the responses! What I'll do is send her the XCF
file I have now, so she can experiment with moving some parts of the
image around AND I'll help her get the fonts used installed so she can
make actual text changes.

[Gimp-user] Question about fonts and XCF files

Hi! I created some logo samples for a friend using various Google and
other free fonts. I saved all of the samples in an XCF file. If I send
her the XCF file, will the fonts be embedded in it, such that she won't
have to have the fonts actually installed on her system or will the XCF
contain references to the font, requiring her to have them installed on
her system?

I do have a question about OpenCL support. If it's disabled by default,
how does one enable it?

Hi! I wanted to let you know I've been running GIMP 2.8.22 on my Linux
Mint 18.2 system for a while now and it's been working well! The only
issue I have is I can't get the "Bevel and Emboss" plugin (part of the
FX Foundry) to run. Each time I run it, it crashes. Not a huge problem
as I can use another plugin for that.

On the positive side, I was able to design a business card and an
envelope return label without any issues at all. :)

Sorry for the delayed feedback.

Thanks!

Peace...

I've seen these topics appear every now and then I usually don't
participate, because I don't have the time. However, I wanted to chime
in and write I think GIMP is great software, right now. In fact, I
think it's awesome software. It's not perfect and has its bugs/issues
but I think the things it _can_ do really overshadow its deficiencies.
Here's the thing: from what I've read, over the years, the GIMP
developers aren't trying to create a PhotoShop clone or replacement.
Yes, there are similarities to PhotoShop in its feature set and in the
functions it performs, but GIMP is an image manipulation tool, in its
own right. Clearly, people want it to be a "PhotoShop clone" so they
won't have to pay for PhotoShop (regardless of it not being affordable
or lack of interest in spending the money).

I've used GIMP for years now and haven't tapped into the majority of its
functionality. The functions I have used and tend to use most often
work well, or at least well enough for me. I think if people took the
time to learn how to use GIMP, the experience wouldn't be as bad or
troublesome as many complain about.

I haven't used PhotoShop very often and the few times I have used it, I
felt as completely lost and confused as the first time I tried GIMP.

Peace...

[Gimp-user] Question about RGB to CMYK conversion and print work

2016-11-15 Thread Tom Williams
I'm helping a friend of mine create a business card for a new business.
I created the card in GIMP and it looks great! The plan is to order
cards through VistaPrint. Anyway, according to the VistaPrint website,
they recommend uploading designs in a CMYK mode. Since I created my
card in GIMP, it's in RGB mode.

Would it be safe to convert my image from RGB to CMYK, using ImageMagick
for example, or should I recreate it using a different tool, like
Scribus? I'm a Linux user. Alternatively, I could send the image to a
friend who has PhotoShop and have her convert the image to CYMK mode for me.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

Peace...

I had this issue yesterday and found by converting the PSD file to a
TIFF file, the layers were preserved in a single file. Here is the
command line I used on Linux:

$ convert Business_Card.psd -colorspace rgb Business_Card.tiff

I'm helping a friend create a business card and downloaded a PhotoShop
template from VistaPrint.com. I couldn't open the PSD file, due to it
having a CMYK colormode, but after running the above command, I was able
to open the TIFF file and three layers were preserved.

Re: [Gimp-user] HATE the new save vs. export behavior

2013-08-10 Thread Tom Williams
On 08/10/2013 01:07 AM, Cristian Secară wrote:
În data de Fri, 09 Aug 2013 14:41:01 -0700, Tom Williams a scris:

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a similar behavior in MS Word
2010. I had created a document that I wanted to save as a PDF file.
I used the Save As function to do so. The PDF file got saved and
Adobe Reader was opened to show me the PDF file was properly
created. Cool. So, being happy with my new PDF file, I closed the
Word window because I was done with my task (mission
accomplished!). Low and behold, Word informed me I had unsaved
changes and offered me the chance to save them. At first, I was
surprised since I had _just_ saved the document to PDF format. Then,
 the light bulb went off.

What I learned was this: Word was prompting me to save the unsaved
changes because I had not, yet, saved my document in a file which
Word could readily open for edit such that I could resume my
editing. When I saved another test document in OpenDocument format
and closed the Word window, Word did _not_ prompt me to save the
unsaved changes because Word considers OpenDocument files to be
editable where the PDF file isn't.
This example is not always similar to all situations in GIMP. One of
current scenario in GIMP is this: I take an existing .png or .jpg
picture with a company logo or a happy/interesting face of one of my
friends, crop the part of interest in square aspect ratio, scale down
to 106x106 pixels as this is the native resolution I need for Contacts,
maybe sharpen a bit, export as .png.

Fine. At closing GIMP asks me save the canges to image ?. Hmm. Save
what ? The original picture is already ruined from its perspective, so
what would be the benefit in save it as .xcf ? The exported .png is
more or less lossless and further lossless editable, assuming the
original was flat anyway and especially if the orignal was still .png.

What realy misses here is some intelligent way in determining the
oportunity of the save the changes to image ? dialog. This dialog (or
the lack of an option to getting rid of it) that pops up in obvious
useless situations is the annoying one, *not* the export thing.

 Cristi

I understand but that's not the point. Your example isn't always
similar to all situations of Gimp usage either. In your example, you
don't need to save any changes that you would want to resume editing
later since you've already exported the PNG file you want. Gimp *can
not know that* since it can't read your mind. :) You could have opened
a JPEG image, performed the same crop, and exported to PNG or vice-versa
or even exported to both formats. Maybe then change the mode from RGB
to indexed and exported to GIF as well. That doesn't change the fact
you haven't saved your work in such a way that it can be easily
resumed later on.

Having Gimp or any other software effectively guess what you want will
only lead to disaster later on. Believe me, I fully understand the old
save behavior and when I encountered the new behavior, I was confused
by it at first. In fact, I used to do this:

 1. Identify an image to edit
 2. Make a copy of it, so I would preserve the original (just in case)
 3. Open the image in Gimp and make my edits
 4. Either save the XCF file, if I wasn't finished with my edits or save
as JPEG or PNG
 5. Close Gimp.

If later on I realized I screwed up the edit and needed to re-edit, I
had to start over again unless I saved in XCF format. Even then, if I

Once I understood the new behavior more and realized it actually helps
me preserve my work, I actually considered it a good change and one that
will help me almost completely eliminate the man, I wish I would have

edit again.

People use Gimp in many different ways. Clearly a lot of people don't
save their work in XCF format and clearly a number of professionals
always save their work in the proprietary image format (XCF, PSD, etc).
I used to be in the camp that never or rarely saved images in XCF
format. With this new behavior, I'm now someone who almost always saves
in XCF format and I consider this a good thing. Of course, none of this
is about *my* specific use of Gimp but it's not about anyone else's
specific use of Gimp either. Fortunately, there are options available
to those who don't like the current behavior. Use a different tool. In
fact, I've read great things about Paint.net for Windows, for the
Windows users out there. Install a Gimp plug-in that restores (or close
to it) the old desired behavior. Use an older version of Gimp.

For me, it seems that there are well-established precedents for this type of
situation, and in general it would be better to follow precedent where
reasonable. It's generally better when tools behave the way you expect.

In the spreadsheet example above, it's absolutely true that if you open a csv,
add some fomulas, and save as a csv you will lose the formulas. Pretty good
analogy to the topic at hand.

The spreadsheets that I'm familiar with all do the same basic thing in this
 situation:

1: They default to saving the file in the same format to the same file name as
you opened in the first place
2: They warn you that if you accept this default behavior, you may lose some
 data

OO also gives you the option to have it remind you every time or not.

From my outsider perspective, that seems like a clean, simple, and logical
approach that would avoid unwanted data loss and conform more closely with the
de facto standard for this situation. Seems obvious to me, and it's baffling
that this has become such a shouting match. Didn't have to be that way.

I know what you mean as I'm picking at that same scab. :) lol

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a similar behavior in MS Word
2010. I had created a document that I wanted to save as a PDF file. I
used the Save As function to do so. The PDF file got saved and Adobe
Reader was opened to show me the PDF file was properly created. Cool.
So, being happy with my new PDF file, I closed the Word window because I
was done with my task (mission accomplished!). Low and behold, Word
informed me I had unsaved changes and offered me the chance to save
them. At first, I was surprised since I had _just_ saved the document
to PDF format. Then, the light bulb went off.

What I learned was this: Word was prompting me to save the unsaved
changes because I had not, yet, saved my document in a file which Word
could readily open for edit such that I could resume my editing. When I
saved another test document in OpenDocument format and closed the Word
window, Word did _not_ prompt me to save the unsaved changes because
Word considers OpenDocument files to be editable where the PDF file
isn't.

I liken the PDF file to a JPEG or PNG image. Gimp will export the
current image to JPEG or PNG formats but once I do so, I will save the
image in a format that Gimp doesn't consider editable. If I open a
JPEG image in Gimp, at some text to it, and export it as a JPEG, I can't
change the text I added to _that_ image. I either have to start over,
if I can, or find creative ways to edit that text.

Once I went through the above experience with MS Word, I got a better
understanding of the new export behavior and I actually like it better
now. Now, my habit will be to simply save the file each time I edit
it and when I need a JPEG or PNG file, I'll export one at that time and
for that specific intended use. If I can train myself in this way,
there won't be any more times when I've saved an image file I can no
longer update or edit in the future, provided the XCF file doesn't get
corrupt. :) lol

On a side note, I conducted another experiment, before my MS Word
experience, in MS Works. I created a document, used Save As to save it
as a Rich Text file and when I closed Works, it prompted me to save my
unsaved changes.

Peace...

Tom

That is a new and unexpected behavior. I used to save png with layers
intact. Now the merge isn't even mentioned.

I don't think this is new. From what I remember, if I had an image
open with multiple layers and I saved it as a PNG file, the *saved* PNG
file wouldn't retain the layer information even though the window title
of the image window would change to the name of the PNG file.

So, if I created a new image with a blue bottom layer and I added a text
layer on top of it, when I saved that image as a PNG file, the image
window would be name {filename}.png and the text layer would still be
shown in the layers dialog window. However, if I closed that image and
opened the *saved* PNG file, the text layer wouldn't be preserved as a
separate layer.

Kasim Ahmic's statement above makes perfect sense. If you save the
image, the layers remain intact because you save in XCF. If you export
the image, the layers are merged and saved in the composite image format.

This change in Gimp behavior took a short time to adjust to but now that
I have, it makes perfect sense to me and as a result, I'm far more
conscious about whether I'm saving a file or exporting to the image file
format of choice.

Hey Eduard, I'm Tom and it's a pleasure to meet you! :)

I've been a long time GIMP user and the new save/export behavior was a
surprise to me as well, but I actually like the new behavior since I
tend to save in XCF format more frequently, which prevents me from
making accidental mistakes. In the past, I would open an image file,
forget to save it as a XCF file first, make some changes to it, save the
file (either clobbering the original or saving it as a new file), and
then later regret NOT saving to XCF format because I would want to make
further modifications later or to find out which font I had used, if I
added text, etc.

The new behavior forces me to be more conscious about my saving action,
which I think is a good thing. I also agree with adding a setting to
control the save behavior, so users can choose which method suits them best.

With regard to all the discussion about Linux in all this, we can't
forget the numbers of people who use GIMP on Windows and the Freedom of
Linux doesn't relate to that platform.

As for Audacity, I'm running Audacity 2.0.3 on Ubuntu 13.04 Linux
(64-bit) right now. I have a MP3 audio file loaded and when I click the
File menu, the save options are Save Project, Save Project As, and
Save Compressed Copy of Project. Then, I have two Export options,
Export and Export Multiple. I made a change to the audio track and
tried to close Audacity and it prompted me to save the project (.AUP)
file and stated if I wanted to save in another audio format, I must use
the File Export function. Maybe Audacity on Windows behaves
differently.

[Gimp-user] from tom chambers re: student GIMP

2013-06-13 Thread Tom Chambers
Dear GIMP:

I've just retired from teaching Technology Applications for middle schoolers
(7,8), and I wanted to share the numerous student projects that involved GIMP.
Various groups of students turned to your product 30 different times to make
things happen:

1)  Raul Yzaguirre School For Success [RYSS] - Harmony Hills Elementary School
Mentorship Workshop: Twenty-one students [eighth grade] from RYSS traveled to
Harmony Hills Elementary School to mentor twenty third grade students in the
use of graphics software. This mentorship process involved an intensive
session of learning/practicing, and project application to make digital art:

http://tomrchambers.com/h_8_h.html

2)  Raul Yzaguirre School For Success (RYSS) - Houston Coalition for the
Homeless (HCH) Three Decades of Achievement Event [April 5, 2013] : A core
group of eighth grade students attended the Houston Coalition for the Homeless
(HCH) Three Decades of Achievement event downtown Houston, April 5, 2013.
They displayed a selection of the eighth grade class Digital Art about the
homeless to not only call attention to this social issue, but also celebrate
their humanity. They explained their (and classmates') multifaceted project
that involved Word, PowerPoint and GIMP (graphic arts software):

http://tomrchambers.com/hch.html

3)  Homelessness Digital Art (GIMP) : Eighth grade students used GIMP
(Photoshop equivalent freeware) to create Digital Art about homelessness. The
art online is a selection from the 8th grade class. They used images of
homelessness situations to manipulate in GIMP for the art work. Not only did
the students call attention to the plight of the homeless, but also celebrate
their humanity through the Digital Art treatment of the images. This activity
was in response to a learning service (campaign) initiative by the National
Council of La Raza (NCLR):

4)  Raul Yzaguirre School For Success [RYSS] - Harmony Hills Elementary School
Mentorship Workshop: Twenty-two students [seventh grade] from RYSS traveled
to Harmony Hills Elementary School to mentor twenty-one second grade students
in the use of graphics software. This mentorship process involved an intensive
session of learning/practicing, and project application to make digital art:

7)  My World Transformed: This project is a culmination of middle school
students [Enrichment Class] at Raul Yzaguirre School For Success (Houston,
Texas) working to explore their personal environment [bedroom at home] to
provide photo documentation for the making of Digital Art. During the process,
a greater awareness of self through possessions came to the forefront:

the body becomes fluid. The problem with that is the images (the
browser icons on the page) and the text end up too far apart on the body.

This is the exact reason why I chose to go for a static design. The
mockup that Mike made doesn't exactly work with a fluid
design unfortunately. Unless we come up with something different, I'm
afraid we'll be stuck with a static design.

This should actually be fairly easy to deal with. Either use the
max-width property to keep the content from getting spread out too
much and for browsers or user agents that display the page on a screen
that's not very wide, the content can scale down to fit that size. The
benefits of a fluid layout are worth the relatively little effort to
make it work.

You're making great progress!

Subject: [Gimp-user] Tablet

I downloaded Gimp and have a tablet plugged it, but anytime I try to make say
a line using the tablet, nothing appears. The tablet is on and working. The
only way now I can make a line is by using the mouse. Please help.

How do I get Gimp 2.6.11 to work w/my SCSI scanner? I am
presently running Xubuntu 11.10 Live CD. CentOS 5 s
installed on my HDD. It's version of Gimp runs my SCSI
 scanner.

Do I need to download XSANE?

FWIW: I do not think you will get it working from a live
 CD.

First stop is to check the sane database

 http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=model=bus=scsiv=p=

If your scanner is supported then you will need to
install xsane from your distribution repo.

Next step, Gimp needs a xsane-gimp plugin. Seems to be
one for CentOS, bound to be one for Ubuntu.

 http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/8078537/com/xsane-gimp-0.991-5.el5.i386.rpm.html

All being well, there is a menu entry in Gimp: 'File' -
'Create' - 'Xsane' which calls xsane for scanning and
passes the result back to Gimp.

Hi

XSane, comes installed w/Xubuntu 11.10. The problem is that
Gimp 2.6.11 does not refer to it from it's menu as it used
to do. I found it has to be accessed via the command line:

sane-find-scanner

Might be because as I already stated that I am running Live

I am loath to install just to find it no workie.

Will look for a throw down HDD to install on for a test to
see if XSane appears under create. I suspect it will appear
in the blank space noted above.

My sister is a professional graphis person. Has been for
many years. She uses Photoshop on Mac.

I let her run Gimp (not 2.6.11) on one of my Linux boxes.
She was very impressed. She saw a lot of features she did
not expect to see. Said that you could actually do
professional work that would be aceptable to print shops.
