Thanks!

It sound like the project is in an abandoned state.
If even the maintainer can't do nothing, I really don't know what to do,
It seems a rubber wall and the worst thing is that this is ruining the
overall perception of desktop completeness and consistency for my

Sorry for annoying you with this problem again I know it's not strictly

network-manager-applet translations

2018-02-21 Thread Claude Paroz

Hey Lubomir,

The various network-manager-* translations are currently handled through
the GNOME translation project.

However, someone noticed that commit:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/network-manager-applet/commit/?id=0602c3fa6c
which simply overwrite and bypass the work of GNOME translators which is
not nice at all!

If the network manager maintainers decide to not use the GNOME
translation project any longer, that's their choice, but then please
let's communicate that clearly.
If that's not the case, then please do not mix translation sources
without the agreement from the translation coordinators.

Thanks for your understanding!

translation project (Marathi language) for GIMP software.

Dear professors,

I would like to thank you for this nice initiative. It would be so great
to see Marathi translations progressing again for GNOME software!

We have already read about translation information from website
https://developer.gimp.org/README.i18n
. Furthermore, we have
understood the procedural part to add translations for various catalogs
(.po and .pot).

We also have checked team database for Marathi language and status of
the work done for the same. The progress is merely 2% and the existing
members are also tagged as inactive members.

We can work on this project and complete the task soon.

We want to know whether and how these newly created .po and .pot files
would be incorporated into the GIMP distribution?

I would encourage you to use our translation tracking application at
https://l10n.gnome.org/languages/mr/gnome-gimp/ui/ and upload the result
of your work there.
Then, if no Marathi language coordinator is active any longer, you can
write again on this mailing list, pointing to uploaded .po files and
asking for them to be committed. I'm sure other coordinators will be
pleased to help you for that.

Working on the master branch, you will target the GIMP 2.10 release
(seehttps://wiki.gimp.org/wiki/Roadmap). You could always backport some
of those translations to the 2.8 stable release if GIMP 2.10 is delayed
too much.

Happy translating!

Back in the day we could always could on intltool-update to do the

to request that all projects provide a specific command (whether
intl-tool update or not) that updates the messages for a particular
language? That way damned lies won't have to do so much maintenance
work, and the developers are familiar with their own build system
anyway. Also life becomes easy for those who have the habit of
committing to git directly.

I would like to fully support this claim.
Having to use the software build system to update .pot or .po files is a
BIG loss for the translation toolchain.
The patch recently added to Damned-Lies to be able to properly rebuild
pot files for meson-based modules are mainly hacks, not a proper resolution.

Hi Marcus,

I just checked and putting a RLM[1] character when both or one of the
places are written with RTL characters works fine. However when both
are in latin, the arrow looks reverse since the direction is actually
not changed. So my suggestion is to use the ltr arrow when both
places
are in latin and rtl when one of them are in RTL. Other solution
would
be to place each part separately and force their direction. Something
like and float in HTML and CSS, so each place and the arrow
would be in their own container and you don't rely on the free text
and RLM character.

Best Wishes,
Arash

Hi!

Thanks for your answer Arash!
I attached a patch to the aforementioned bug which I think should do
achieve the goal (embedding each component with the RLM or LRM
depending on the locale). From some quick testing it kinda looks right
to me. But it would be great with more testing (I might very well be
missing something obvious here).

What about just offering the whole expression to translate: "%s → %s".
Someone should check that the printf syntax ("%2$s ← %1$s") is properly
handled in JS code.

Hi Fabio,

Note that you should be able to keep your workflow and replace
"intltool-update" by "wget -O po/language.po
https://l10n.gnome.org/POT/module.branch/module.branch.language.po;.
It is more verbose, but you could make some alias. Unfortunately, it
would be a bit more complicated to replace the merge functionaliy of
intltool-update (in the case you already modified your po file).

As the one who have to adapt DL code for various po creation/update
methods, I also agree having a common method would be simpler.

However, the "intltool to pure gettext" current transition is probably
unavoidable, as intltool is mostly unmaintained these days and gettext
made real progress wrt extracting strings from various formats.

I don't doubt it's possible, as I did something like that for the Django
project.

However, the question is more: are we going to spend time to
develop specific toolchains for every docs techology in the wild?
Those developments take time, and there is a reason why most GNOME
packages use similar tools when possible. That does not mean tools
cannot be changed, but still we should aim to have and follow some
standards.

My two cents on this is that it doesn't really make sense to keep the
bad string just because there are already some translations. Instead
of making “less work” for translators, you're actually making more
work for them. You will have more translators translate the bad
string, and then you will have all translator translate the fixed
string. If this was during the GNOME cycle and you'd be asking for a
freeze break for this, given the context and given the remaining time
till release, I'd grant 1 of 2 needed approvals.

You can wait for someone else from the i18n to confirm this if you're not sure.

Same for Basque lang:

For example, gsettings-desktop-schemas module's UI should be appear as

I just updated that module manually.

But there is indeed an issue.

Apparently, the l10n.gnome.org server is not receiving all commit mail

The doc/Makefile.am defines balsa_help_files and balsa_spell_extra as
space-separated lists of files, and then sets:

So apparently $(HELP_FILES) is being used literally, without replacing
$(balsa_help_files) and $(balsa_spell_extra) by their definitions. Is
that not the correct way to concatenate two lists of files? (FWIW, "cd
doc && make pot" makes balsa.pot with no errors.)

Hi Peter,

The problem is that Damned-Lies is running on pure static sources, to
read configurations and to extract strings.

I tried to make the variable reading code a little bit smarter to be
able to read included variables. Now it still fails as the code returns
after finding the first occurrence of the variable in the file (which is
empty).
It's still a bit hackish, but what about inverting the "if
BUILD_WITH_SPELL_CHECKER" condition in your file?

Just use the "Join a team" link on your profile page.

Yes, in GNOME (and in most other translation projects, we always
privilege the two-letter code when possible. With the fallback mecanism
of much i18n infrastructures, when a longer language code is not found,
it should use the shorter one (pt_PT -> pt). Hopefully this works also
for Chrome.

The process is a bit more complicated as you have to learn how to
translate a po file. However, you can use dedicated software for that
and it's not so difficult to grasp. And we are there to help :-)

As a first step, could you pick a (possibly small) package on
https://l10n.gnome.org/languages/C/gnome-3-22/ui/, download the po file
for the package and send the translated file back to me?

I'll then do the necessary steps to setup a team page for Akan.

However, I couldn't complete it via DL - it just stays waiting
for an answer after pressing Submit to repository.

Then I pushed my file directly to git, but web interface
is not updated with that change. In past it was updated
almost immediately.

Could someone please check? Thanks

https://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/epiphany/master/po/kk

Should be fixed now. I had to force some processes to shutdown the other
day and one lock file was not properly removed.

Thanks for noticing.

Hi Daniel,

Each repo whose po directories don't match the default locations have to
be configured with git config keys (hooks.po-directories,
hooks.help-directories). This is then checked by this script [1].

So you have to find someone who can update those variables. Or commit

Hello Rafael,

Unfortunately not, once a commit has been pushed to a public repository,
you cannot amend it any longer. It is technically possible, but that
would mean rewriting repo history, which would then corrupt all existing
checkouts in the wild. I'm quite sure that the GNOME git repository is
preventing that.

by all means go ahead and add the GIMP master stats. That policy to

We usually change the statistics at the last minute - which is why a
variable is used in the markup for this.

We do the same for supported languages, by commenting out unsupported
 languages.

It was a clever idea. Unfortunately, the variables are expanded *before*
producing the POT file, so the intent of easing translation is defeated.

The addition of Bosniac is an issue for this - I can add it

Sure.
