Maybe. There are two ways to download and import data: The easier one is if
your bank provides a download option on its website to download transactions as
OFX, QFX, or QIF. Do that and then use File>Import>OFX/QFX or File>Import>QIF
to import the downloaded file into GnuCash. The other method is to use
OnlineBanking, which is provided by a separately-developed facility called
AQBanking. In order for that to work your bank must support a protocol called
OFX-DirectConnect and you must be able to obtain the necessary information and
credentials to tell GnuCash how to connect. More information on the latter
method may be found at
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Setting_up_OFXDirectConnect_in_GnuCash_2
.

Re: Error in Finance:Quote

2017-08-12 Thread rs
Thanks, Frank.
1. You were absolutely right in pointing that the URL on the IndiaMutual.pm
was outdated. I changed it to the correct one, which is already listed as a
reserve in the next line of .pm
http://portal.amfiindia.com/spages/NAV0.txt
& it works as a charm now! I have placed a record of this change in GitHub
source of this module
https://github.com/finance-quote/finance-quote/blob/master/lib/Finance/Quote/IndiaMutual.pm

2. I still have issues with yahoo_json which does not return any value for
Indian stocks using the symbols on https://in.finance.yahoo.com/lookup
for example:=
rs@debian:~/Documents$ gnc-fq-dump yahoo_json SBIN.NS
Finance::Quote fields Gnucash uses:
symbol: SBIN.NS  <=== required
  date: ** missing **<=== recommended
  currency: ** missing **<=== required
  last:  <=\
   nav:  <=== one of these
 price:  <=/
  timezone:  <=== optional

** This stock quote cannot be used by GnuCash!
===
Any ideas as to how to resolve this ?

File not ZEROED, what went wrong?

2017-08-12 Thread Jay Ridgley

Good Morning,

I just discovered that my Income:Wages entry was NOT processed when my
books were closed for 2913!

I have had no reason to examine this entry (I retired in June 2013) but
noticed it was not zero when I was looking at my accounts recently.

I have two questions, 1. - Why was it not cleared in the first place, it
was handled properly in prior years and 2. - What is the best way to
correct the problem?

Reopening 2013 is not an answer! That was over 2 YEARS ago and a couple
of TAX RETURNS as well! I can think of a journal entry that will do it
but wonder whether the accounts I would use are the correct ones:

Income:Wagescharge amt
Equity:Increased Equity  income amt
JE001 Failed closing 2013

Cheers,
Jay

It depends on your tax jurisdiction and the exact legal status of your
non profit organization.

I am treasurer or a Quaker Meeting in New Jersey, USA. We are considered
a non-profit organization by both the Internal Revenue Service and the
State of New Jersey. We are also considered to be a religious
organization. We have no employees. A consequence is that we need file
no income tax returns.

We do keep books of income and expense because I must write
acknowledgement letters to donors so they can claim income tax
deductions. We also need to keep good records because some organizations
contribute money to us and they need to know aspects of our finances.

I do use GnuCash for this.

Long ago, I used Quicken and TurboTax for my accounts, but TurboTax did
not communicate well with Quicken one year, and I got rid of Windows for
almost all my computing work, so I switched to GnuCash for my personal
accounting. When I was made treasurer, I naturally used it for that too.
(Separate files; in fact a separate user account on my machine.)

QuickBooks Pro for Non-profits did not contain any of the special things
accounting for non-profits calls for. In other words, you still have to
set that up manually. It is why after a 2006 fire, I chose not to
replace Quickbooks. Since some of the organizations for which I am not
treasurer but do serve on the finance committee use QuickBooks Pro for
Non-profits I can tell you that as of 2017 it STILL has none of the
special non-profit features.

Michael D Novack

just a few examples a non-profit might need the usual "business"
categories of "vendor" and "customer" but it also would have the
category "donor". Pledges are receivables but only according to the
terms of the pledge << a pledge of $1000/year for the next ten years is
NOT an immediate receivable of $10,000 >> Membership dues (if any) are
NOT a receivable while pledges are, but members usually want some sort
of unified statement.

PLEASE -- I am NOT saying that gnucash has these features, just that you
will have to improvises just as much using QuickBooks so why pay.

A perhaps more useful suggestion?

Always prepare in advance to back out changes.
   In other words, before any major software change (in this case
an update) which I will call a "build" you make a full back up, one of
"system" (software) and one of "data". You then do the build and test
that all of your critical software is still working with the new
"system". If not, you have an easy path to restore to the pre-build version.

Downloading Financial Information from Canadian Financial Institutions

2017-08-12 Thread Fred Weihs
I have just installed GnuCash as a replacement in Linux for Quick Cash
Manager which I used under Windows. I will need to download transactions
from my Canadian financial institution. When I check the process for
downloading into GnuCash, the directory of financial institutions to
connect with are all American. Can I download from a Canadian institution?

Thanks.

Sounds like you're on a Mac. There are two ways to get an app to stay in the
dock: You can drag it there from Finder or while it's running you can
control-click and select "Options>Keep in Dock".

If neither of those is working for you then there's something wrong with your
mac. You should do the usual recovery tricks (restart, clear NVRAM, run
DiskUtility's First Aid, etc.) and if it still fails schedule a visit to your
nearest Genius Bar.
