Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

2018-08-11 Thread David Carlson
Not quite... If you have a sacrificial computer such as a Virtualbox
machine, try release 3.2 on it first, along with a test copy of your data
file. Then, if you do not like the results you have not corrupted your
main machine.

Before installing 3.2 on a Windows machine, I would suggest making a backup
of all the configuration files including the F:Q related stuff if you use
it before migrating. Once a computer has had GnuCash 3.2 installed on it
it is changed as well as any data file that has been opened by it. Then to
revert you would need to completely remove release 3.2 using the Windows
uninstaller (in my conservative opinion) and install release 2.6.21 to be
able to read files that release 3.2 touched.

On a another side note, I use a free third party program to track my
portfolios in nearly real-time. If you are interested, Google 'Takestock2'
for more info.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

2018-08-11 Thread samsurd2
I'm finding myself going down a similar rabbit hole. After editing my funds
(38 in all) to reflect yahoo_json as had been suggested elsewhere, I still
couldn't get any quotes. I removed Strawberry Perl using both Windows
Control Panel and File Explorer and then, for good measure, did a Registry
scrub using a utility I've used successfully for years. I then reinstalled
Strawberry Perl via the "Install Online Price Retrieval" utility which in
turn installed F::Q 1.47 and tried once more to get quotes. Again, no
success. This morning, I updated all items manually.

Since I've read that GNC 3.2 has the ability to import quotes from a CSV
file, I guess I'll try that now. I've been reluctant to install any 3.x
version because of the bugs that a new major version of any program exhibits
even though I know that the Gnucash developers do a good job of sorting out
such things. At worst, I can always go back to the 2.6.16 version for which
everything I use (except F::Q) works fine.

I am using GnuCash 2.6.18 and I am not sure what version of F:Q I was using

version. Still not getting any quotes at all. Have updated manually but at
more than 50 stocks that is quite arduous. It appears to me that the

income stream that they could use. I already have on line accounts (Bank,

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

2018-08-09 Thread David G Hamblen
I ended switching all 7 of mine to yahoo_json, and it took a variety of
efforts:  updating F:Q from 1.46 to 1.47, closing and opening Gnucash,
making sure I had no AlphaVantage accounts lurking in the securities
editor   Not sure which of those things made it work, but it's
working smoothly now.  My guess is the upgrade to F:Q was the key, but
maybe reopening GnuCash caused it to recognize that update.

BTW, if I do the following for a single fund, I do get a correct quote.

 In a cmd.exe window:

 cd \Program Files (x86)\gnucash\bin\

 echo (yahoo_json "DBEF") | perl gnc-fq-helper

Do I need make some other change other than the one I described (like an
environmental variable) or am I not waiting long enough for quotes via
yahoo_JSON to be generated? Typically, how long is it taking for you to get
25 quotes?

For US stocks/bonds/funds, I’d recommend using yahoo_JSON instead of
alphavantage as the quote source. I haven’t had any trouble getting 25
quotes at a time that way. I think I still get 2 currency quotes via
alphavantage, but that hasn’t been a problem either.

My recollection is that someone reported yahoo_JSON as less than useful
for some non-US stocks/funds. But I can’t remember any specifics.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

2018-08-09 Thread David Reiser via gnucash-user
My 25 quotes takes 10-15 seconds.

Check to see if you are accidentally asking for every currency conversion rate
in the book. I think alphavantage is the default (and only?) source for
currency quotes. If you’re trying to get too many of those, you’ll still be
running into the alphavantage difficulties.

Re: [GNC] Get Quote is Not Working?

2018-08-07 Thread Paul Bates
Did my update on Saturday morning. Sixty stocks took 18 minutes and no
misses. I have no idea how long it would take during a heavy load time.
Their new tiered service rates suggest 12 minutes for 60 free quotes (5
requests per minute). They want $20 for 15 requests per minute. On the
upside it may be possible to adopt the US stocks batch quotes API... but I
had the impression it only operated during trading hours.

columns) are likely either class ?label? or ?GtkLabel? (depending on Gtk
version, 3.20 is the former, 3.18 the latter) but specifying this class
