[Goanet] Re: REQUIRED FERRY (BOAT):
Dear Joe, In the 1930s the river navigation was handled by lanchas or launches, and gasolinas or sleek, fast smaller boats. Slow moving ferry boats of this type were only introduced at the time of the Second World War, if I remember right. That would make "Sancoale" and "Ponda" considerably less than 100 years old, unless they plied outside Goa? [Goanet] Zudas Konknni play: A cry for forgiveness and justice
News -- Mangalore: Judas Cries out for Forgiveness and Justice, Yet Again Daijiworld News Network - Mangalore (MB) Mangalore, Mar 20: It indeed needs a lot of gumption and grit to stage a play of this kind. The playwright had it all right. The performer who played Judas, Arun Raj Rodrigues, too had it and so did the Mangalore University's Chair in Christianity and Dharma Samanvaya organization who staged the play. A good part of the large crowd that gathered in the amphitheatre of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work in the late evening of Sunday, March 19, 2006 was perhaps greeted and treated by kind of a shock treatment as the play 'Zudas' in Konkani, penned by Dr. Pratap Naik SJ of TSKK, Goa and directed by Denis Monteiro Pai, Kiram-Vamanjoor slowly unfolded. It was a challenge to the thinking minds to ruminate and analyze, to divert from the set theories and dogmas and get into a healthy debate. If the saints-to-be, before their Canonization, could have Devil's Advocates to run them down in every way possible, why couldn't Judas, perhaps, unjustifiably, the most despicable character in the whole universe, have his defenders and defence counsels? It was in this spirit that the audience watched the play avidly and in a pin drop silence. Judas' character is thrown open threadbare to public scrutiny. Several characters from the scriptures are compared and contrasted, to make the viewers think and masticate the thoughts. Was Judas indeed a villain of the piece, or a victim of a smear campaign? At the end of it all, the playwright, the solo artiste and the analytical audience - all come out clean, with a clear mind and judgment. If the play succeeded in keeping the entire audience glued to their seats, the interaction that followed provided even more grist to the thinking minds. It was indeed proof to the fact that the modern society is more open to dialogue and discussion than remaining shackled to perverse theories and thinking. Chair in Christianity head and professor Dr John Fernandes moderated a healthy and thought-provoking discussion on various facets of the theme and dialogues of the play. It was heart-warming to see several scholars, besides Dr Pratap Naik, putting forth their viewpoints in a cordial and accommodating way. It was felt that avenues be explored to stage the play at different venues around town and district to create awareness and tolerance over different shades of opinion. Editor's note: The play had its maiden show in Mangalore almost two years ago. It took more than two years for the play to see its second show. What could have been the reason? Refusal of the people to see beyond the tunnel vision imposed by age-old beliefs? Or is it because any questioning attitude could be looked down upon as kind of heresy? The play was first staged at Kalaangann on March 7, 2004. Daijiworld published a review of the play by Resident Editor Richie Lasrado on March 9. 2004. The review was highly acclaimed by scholars, no less in eminence like former Goa University Vice Chancellor Prof Olivinho Gomes, Mangalore University's Chair of Christianity head and professor Dr John Fernandes and several others. As requested by many of our readers and for the benefit of those who missed reading it the last time, we reproduce the review. Juxtaposition of Judas - Play Reviewed by Richie Lasrado, Daijiworld News Network - Mangalore Name of the play: Zudas Format: Monologue Language: Konkani Playwright: Pratap Naik SJ, Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr, Alto-Porvorim, Goa Duration: An hour and 30 minutes Presented by: Mandd group of Mandd Sobhann, Mangalore Date: Sunday, March 7, 2004 at 6-30 pm Director: Denis Monteiro Pai, Kiram-Vamanjoor Background musical score: Joel Pereira, Bijai Role of Judas played by: Arun Raj Rodrigues, Valencia Judas Iscariot. Son of Simon Iscariot, the slaughterer. A much-abhorred, much-detested man in history. An unforgettable Biblical character, perennially representing perfidy. A full-life manifestation of betrayal and treachery. One who sold his soul for thirty silver. An apostle-turned-apostate who, with his much-debated 'kiss of death', betrayed his Master, which act finally led to the latter's death on the Cross. Judas is generous in a way. Even today, he willingly lends his name to any number of people as long as they qualify by betraying the faith invested in them. But is there a lateral view? Could he only be a much-maligned man? A few novels have been written with stories woven around Judas' character. A best-seller relates the story of an explorer in the Holy Land who chances upon Judas' scrolls, which put the entire picture of Jesus' life and times in a totally different complexion. They explorer takes the scrolls to the Vatican. They create a storm there and things are never the same again for the poor explorer. Similarly, William Klassen's research book 'Judas:Betrayer or friend of Jesus?' sifts the evidence for the relati
[Goanet] SIGNS OF MILITARY 'INTELLIGENCE' IN GOA
Yesterday's HERALD had this short letter by Lt Col Sylvester M.D'Souza (Retd) of Sangolda titled "Airport Debate Needed" which made the eminently sensible suggestion that it is high time there was a round table discussion about the airport situation among key players like the Navy, Airport Authority, Government, Industry etc. Significantly he says, "They must come together to have a reasoned and informed debate on the various issues involved such as lack of upgraded infrastructure like aprons, bays, taxiways, and terminal facilities among other things. These would need to be taken up on a priority basis till Mopa takes shape as Dabolim will still be needed." Here is one person who is talking of ground reality (at Dabolim) and not being fooled by statistical abstractions purportedly about usage levels. Of course, he doesnt seem to have bought into the idea of the need for two airports in Goa -- yet. But that may be understandable for a military person. Also he seems to have overlooked the importance of "airlines" as a key player. One other thing, I dont see the GCCI statement about Mopa he refers to as having appeared on March 19th. In HERALD that day there was only the anti-Mopa statement by HASG. Maybe there was something by GCCI in another newspaper.

I totally agree with Elizabeth Carvalho's message on the topic " Re: HIV test to be made mandatory for marriage.." The government does not have the right to legislate on a personal decision between two individuals. If either of the two parties (in arranged marriages) has any doubt then they can request the other individual to present the report of an HIV test as a condtion of the contract being undertaken. If we allow the Government to enter into the private lives of indiviuals with this proposed legislation .. will there be any way of stemming the invasion? marie d'souza
[Goanet] Re: Atheism
Hi Jerry, Lazy deists look to "a divine source" to make up their moral code. All morality is based on empathy. It can be inculcated into one's emotional intelligence without the dogma of religion. For those unwilling to invest the time and effort to educate themselves, there will always be 'learned' theologists to lead the way. Unfortunately, Slavoj Zizek is misinformed and the quoted portion of his letter is typical of the arguments used by those who have been brainwashed into submission. It did nothing to convince me of the validity of a divine source of morality. However, you shouldn't feel ashamed of your devotion to a supernatural power. Even Moses got it wrong when complaining to God about the headache he had from the lack of morals within his tribe... and was told "take two tablets and call me in the morning" ;-) Sincerely, Kevin Saldanha Mississauga, ON. Mon Mar 20 21:46:49 PST 2006 Hi A few days back, there was an article sent by one goanetter claiming to be an Atheist. which claimed Gabes salutations to be against his ethics. Coincidently, there was another article by a person called Slavoj Zizek who wrote" Atheism is a legacy worth fighting for" on International Herald Tribune Paris edition. What caught my attention was not this article but a letter written by a person called Jacob Smith from Puerto Rico in reference to the article "Atheism is a legacy worth fighting for". I will reproduce the letter for those who think they are atheist. Slavoj Zizek "Atheism is a legacy worth fighting for" makes a flawed assumption when he states that atheists do good deeds "simply because it is the right thing to do". What he fails to grasp is that the concept of a "right" things to do presupposes a universal standard Any attempt to arrive at an idea of "right" and "wrong" independent of an outside or divine source is destined to collapse upon itself. "Moral" atheists do nothing but borrow wholesale from the codes of those they look down on and have not even the courtesy or intellectual consistency to acknowledge the source material for their value judgement. This article appeared in Mumbai Mirror today. www.mumbaimirror.com Ameesha has no time stroll on the beach in Goa, yet she is enjoying her shoot Ram Kamal Mukherjee Goa is beautiful and I can stay here all my life, says Ameesha Patel who is shooting for Reema Kagti's Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. We all are having a blast here, and even before you ask, I am not fighting with any of my co-actors on the sets. Ameesha Patel will be staying In Goa for a month. It is tiring to shoot day and night, but Reema is such a fantastic director that she never lets us feel the stress. She always gives us the space which an actor expects from a director, she says. Since this is for the first time Ameesha is working with a woman director, does she feel any difference in the approach? Yes, she understands a woman's psychology well. Even before we could speak she would understand. That's the fun of working with a woman director. There are so many women in the cast too, she smiles. So are the heroes feeling outnumbered? Not at all, everyone is enjoying themselves. It's not that we women are tyrants on the sets. In fact we were having such a good time on and off the sets that at times Zoya Akhtar (executive producer) feels that we are here for a picnic, she says. Despite the good times Ameesha has not got any time to stroll on the beach. Now that's the last thing we get to do here. We are shooting round the clock and when Reema calls for pack up, we crash. The conversation turns to recent reports in media that Ameesha had a 'cat fight' with Priyanka Chopra during the outdoor in Wales for Dharmesh Darshan's Aap Ke Khatir. I don't know why people love salacious gossip, she says. Priyanka was staying in a different hotel from day one because she was expecting some of her family friends and guests. Why would she have any problem with me? We barely have scenes together and whatever interactions we've had, have been extremely cordial. Ameesha is waiting eagerly for the release of her film Ankahee. I hope people don't write that I had a cat fight with Esha Deol now, she laughs. She is a nice girl and we never had any issues. I am fond of Hemaji and Esha is like family to us. Ameesha plays the role of a gharelu bahu in the film for the first time. Yes, it is true that I am playing a very soft and sweet traditional wife in this film. I would give credit to Vikram (Bhatt) for exploring my talent as an actor. He portrays women characters so well. Her last release Teesri Aankh was a complete wash out. Does such failure bother her? Hits and flops are two sides of the same coin. I don't take success and failure seriously; trust me it's not worth it. I just concentrate on my work and leave the rest to destiny. No one can guarantee a hit, so why get anxious knowing that their is no remedy, she says. It's almost a year since she spoke to her parents. Does she miss them? I think I have moved on in life. I would not like to comment on this any more. I have realised that one should learn to keep quiet. = Cheers Joseph Fernandes Mumbai Jiyo cricket on Yahoo! [Goanet] Man in a boat
This article appeared in todays Mumbai Mirror, www.mumbaimirror.com Goan artist Subodh Kerkar has an interesting take on seafaring Georgina Maddox Messing about in boats is something that almost every Goan loves to do. However not everyone can take it to artistic heights, which is precisely what Subodh Kerkar has done with his latest exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery, with his exhibition Oceanic. This not his first showing in Mumbai either, in 2005 Kerkar created an elaborate natural installation at Priyadarshini Park that stretched over halfakilometre by the sea where he used innovative lighting, mussel shells and sand-dunes to take 'walking by the seashore' to another level. The self-taught artist who quit his career in the medical field 18 years back has been spending a lot of time in old boat sheds, sourcing material for his show. "I have also used old boat made from choir and cashew strap in Goa wooden boats are slowly being replaced with fibre glass ones so it wasn't difficult to get my raw material Earlier I use to see boats in a realistic way but for this exhibition it's just the idea of the boat that has come into play," says Kerkar. This is also the first time the artist is doing sculptures that are not site specific and can be housed within the gallery. "The boats take on a sculptural form and I have used glass sheeting lit from inside, give the effect of water," says the artist. A nature lover Kerkar's exhibition is replete with sly digs at the packaged lifestyle that city slickers live. "I have a special rack with bottled ocean sea water and it's called bottled oceans- a parody on packaging. There are also 15 to 20 paintings with these installations. In its entirety the show celebrates the organic and critiques the manufactured," sums up Kerkar. Show starts today at the auditorium hall, Jehangir Art Gallery and is on till 29 March. Cheers !!! ! [Goanet] Goa's coastline under tourism assault
Goa's coastline under tourism assault DNA Pushpa Iyengar Thursday, March 23, 2006 00:28 IST PANAJI: Goa's famed 105-km long coastline, which brings in lakhs of tourists to its beaches year after year, has resulted in more than 300 blatant violations of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules in the state, according to tourism minister Dr Wilfred De Souza. The CRZ extends to 500 metres from the high-tide line and no construction is allowed inside this zone. Patronage from local politicians - who themselves often own hotels - has led to only 25 to 30 illegal structures being demolished since the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) was set up in 1999 by the union Ministry of Environment and Forests. Authority member Claude Alvares told DNA, "There were two or three cases when a demolition team was recalled after a minister intervened." De Souza told the Goa Legislative Assembly this week that 314 CRZ violations had been 'noted' for 'appropriate action'. While environmentalists blame the government for looking the other way as Goa's coastline is systematically destroyed, the environment ministry too should share the blame. "After the authority's term expired last February, the government has been giving two month extensions," Alvares says. "This hampers its functioning. It seems the authority is low priority for them," he added. But there is an upside. "Earlier hotel owners would challenge - 'Go ahead and give me a show cause notice. You cannot do anything else.' But with the authority demolishing structures that flout the CRZ, the message has gone out loud and clear. At least in areas where demolitions have taken place, you won't see violations," says the legal adviser of the committee. There have been cases where the power and water has been shut off making these hotels/guest houses non-functional. A reflection of how serious the government is can be seen from the fact that cases of violation are referred to the respective panchayats for 'necessary action'. "Panchayats drag their feet and cases go on for years," says the legal adviser. Besides, the authority is dependent on government machinery for demolishing illegal structures which is not always available. As a result, a large number of files are gathering dust in the office of Dr N P S Varde, Director, Environment department. ~(^^)~ Avelino
Re: [Goanet] The Athletics Drought (V M de Malar)
Are there athletic clubs in Goa that one could sponsor? I think Goa is potentially a great venue for Triathalon type events, specially in the more secluded South Goa area. The relatively calm coves in say the Palolem area would be perfect for a multi kilometer swim and the roads around there would also be ideal for the run and bike segments. A sporting event like this would be a boon to Goa's tourism industry. Events like Hawaii's Ironman attracts thousands of atheletes and tourists, while the Boston Marathon attracts tens of thousands of such visitors. I would like to pay tribute to the exempleary courage exhibited by Heman and Como in pushing for the immediate execution of these alleged criminals. However, as a good hearted and peace loving Goan, I am troubled that we cannot reach a consensus on the means of execution. Como has suggested the we conduct a public stoning and an upside down crucifiction in Margao, while Heman has suggested we hang these guys. Come of folks, cant we all get a long? In my opinion, we need to doze over this a little more deeply before we take any hasty decision. The fundamental issue as implied by Como and Heman is that the nation of Goa is being invaded by these non Goan criminals who are destroying our superior culture. With that in mind, we need to be a little more bold and ambitious in our actions. Why have a limited one off Taliban like stoning, when we can aspire to a grander Nazi style genocide of all the non-Goans who have invaded our land? It is not my intent to question the sincere thoughts of Como and Heman, but rather to open the forum so that they and all like mindless Goans reach a mutual consensus on the best way to accomodate our very good hearted and peace loving attitudes of vengence, revenge and xenophobia. [Goanet] Re: Atheism
Hello Santosh Thanks for the response. But I have a question regarding Buddhism. As you mentioned Buddhism and Jainism are atheistic in nature, it may be true, but did they start as atheistic ism's? As History mentions, Prince Siddarth was unhappy cause of human misery he saw and hence renounced everything and went to the forest. Meditated and got enlightened. It was not an easy task for him to be enlightened. Must have been a long process. He could have avoided all that and started doing good works for his people with the wealth that he had as he was a Prince. What was he enlightened with? Isn't it the same thing that we witness in Judaism and hence Christianity too, where ordinary people were enlightened and become prophets? How Buddhism is portrayed is another matter, but the rules set by Buddha were based on something or the other, weren't they revealed to him? Emperor Ashoka too joined Buddism because of what he saw on the field. All those killings. Well that reminds me of Paul, the chosen one who spread the word of God. Before that he was involved in lots of killings and prosecution of early Christians as Saul. About Jainism, it was just a rebellion on Hinduism by Mahavira. I have no much information on it. But what is Atheism? Who started atheism? What are its principles? Do they believe in life after death as most religions believe? (Either, as heaven or hell, or rebirth)? Or are they believers of Darwin's principle of evolution that man came from monkey? Could you shed some light on it? Cheers Jerry Fernandes Santosh Helekar wrote Utter nonsense. At least two ancient religions which use basic human goodness as the source of their morality, Buddhism and Jainism, are atheistic in nature. Ancient materialistic and atheistic philosophies such as the Lokayata philosophy had a much higher moral standard than the theistic religions that emerged centuries later, namely Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.
[Goanet] NRI Association in Goa
Can someone let me/all of us know the status of the planned NRI Association in Goa ? I attended a meeting of NRIs in February at the Kala Academy, but had to leave early. Later I heard that as an outcome of that meeting, an Association of NRIs in Goa had been formed, with a certain leadership. Then I heard that things had changed and there was a new leadership and the new Association was to be launched at a prominent restaurant in Verna. Then...total SILENCE. - I alerted subscribers to the GOAN-NRI forum that plans were afoot to start an association. I received several positive comments and requests to be signed up as members. Then we had a report from Floriano Lobo alleging yet another (rival) attempt to form an NRI Association. Can we not get our act together. ? Having come to live in Goa I would like to join other "returnees" like me, to network and to assist and inform each other of the problems they have encountered when returning to Goa and how they resolved them. If we are united we can accomplish a lot, including interacting as a group with the new NRI Commissioner. Topics.issues for discussion include but are not limited to the following: PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card vs Dual citizenship, the advantages and disadvantages of one versus the other. How does it affect one's foreign nationality. Retaining your NRI status when you come to Goa Customs regulations when bringing personal effects to Goa Income Tax on foreign income and local income Buying property, holding property through inheritance What is a form I & XIV ? Getting a drivers license in Goa Purchasing a vehicle in Goa Strategies to remove legal or illegal tenants and encroachers from your property Foreigners Registration, who needs to register, and why. Special priveleges accorded to senior citizens in India (discount on air and rail fares for example). Medical and dental treatment in Goa/India, . Working or starting a business or NGO in Goa Establishing a NRI Village or Township in Goa, with amenities that NRIs have gotten used to abroad. (I am not a proponent of such a scheme, but just putting it out for discussion). Clearly, all of the above are important topics. Some of us having lived here for a while may have answers to some of them. Others may not have a clue. Together we can seek answers, invite speakers, professionals to guide us. The first step is to have a viable association. Before someone alleges that I am trying to start a new NRI Association. let me say categorically that I am not, nor do I aspire to leadership in any such association. All I want to see is a functioning NRI Association in Goa that I can join and contribute my two paise worth. Can I have some comments specially from NRI returnees in Goa ? Vivian A. D'Souza

Hi Cornel, Read your post with keen interest, sir! As a professor of post-doctoral studies in Britain, you've given a politically correct definition of nationalilty. I have to concede that my definition of nationality is what you call identity if "nationality" is defined within the narrow parameters of citizenship. In this context, please note a subsequent post from Mario on the topic. You might have heard of Auroville, a commune founded by sage-philosopher Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry, a former French enclave in South India. Talented people from all parts of the world are engaged in spiritual, intellectual and artistic pursuits there, after renouncing their citizenships. They call themselves "world citizens". Please tell us how we determine their nationality, independent of their identity. Regards, RKN Radhakrishnan

Re: [Goanet] Development Plans - Our own fault
This is a very interesting post because Goa's inability to leverage a piece of the Central Budget pie is entirely our fault. If we chose to send Churchill to Delhi to represent us, than all that we can truly hope for is a bounty in smuggled watches. We have Churchill in Delhi, we have Micky (Mouse) Pacheco as Minister of Agriculture, we have the most corrupt Babush Monserrate holding the Town and Country Planning portfolio. How can Goa ever begin to move into the 21st century. Do these people understand fiscal dynamics, do they understand investment functions, multiplier effects, tax subsidies, fiscal discipline. How can one manage an economy and move it ahead when one's credentials are either smuggler or former Tarvotti. Is this line-up the best that Goa has to offer? We have ourselves to blame. [Goanet] Damage to Places of worship
Damage to Places of worship The murder of Fr. Eusebio Ferrao makes it very clear that we need blood to open our eyes. The prayers offered to his soul and other writing about this issue does not solve the root problem; Everything is done by the Government and the associated politicians to drive the minorites into the sea. It is therefore of paramount importance that the public has to come forward em masse to protest in public and only then some sort of action will be taken. It is obvious that our Government only understands issues when there is destruction of property, killings, burnings etc. It is high time that the bishop Rev. Filipe Neri Ferrao has to be more updated on the issues of safety of church property, security, electronic alarms etc. I am definite that the curriculum in the seminary does not include safety and property management which is one of the important functions of today's world. The world is changing but the teachings in the seminary have not changed. I hope a committee is organized so that the issues on safety will be studied and there will be less destruction and murders in the near future. Tom de Sousa in Hong Kong.

[Goanet] Re: HIV test to be made mandatory for marriage
You may have read the post (I think by Gabriel) about Russian women (Russian mafia-prostitutes) bringing HIV to Goa. The blondes spread it to the local population with the help of the Goan motorcycle pilots - perhaps in exchange for a free lift.:=)) Also there was a post about the spread of HIV in Goa's medical facilities by reusing syringes, catheters and unsafe blood. India has the largest number of HIV positive cases in the world - see Bill Clinton's work and Bill Gates work on this front in India. A pre-marital compulsory HIV test may be a deterrent to pre-marital sex. And in today's world, any real or imaginary deterrence can be helpful. Regards, GL Beverley de Sequeira: I do agree with Ms Carvalho that making the HIV Test mandatory is an invasion of one's privacy.. But however, one has seriously consider that in doing so, numerous innocent lives will be spared the anguish unfairly inficted upon them in unwittingly contracting the disease from a infected spouse.. Have personally , in the course of practise, had a few patients who contracted the disease, unsuspectingly from their spouses.. she breast -fed her child, and it was only later that both mother and child tested positive for the HIV virus Social stigma followed and she is now homeless having been thrown out by her in-laws. Despite medical advances and now the free availibility of ART, there is still a lack of a complete cure for AIDS.. Better safe than sorry , right ?? jc: Well said Lawrence! (Rodrigues) Wonder too how mant Goa Doctors who own these pathology labs will go along with this. Lawrence Rodrigues: "We have decided to amend the Goa Public Health Act making HIV test mandatory before registration of marriage," State Health Minister Dayanand Narvekar told reporters after the cabinet meeting. If amendment comes through, Goa would be the first state in the country to have mandatory HIV test before marriage, Narvekar added. Some more nonsense from our Goan politicians!!!
[Goanet] Dempo's performance at the 2006 AFC Cup away matches till date
Match One AFC CUP 2006 Group B - League match Teams: Al-Nasr, Oman v/s Dempo SC, Goa Date: 7th March, 2006 Time: 20.45 IST Venue: Salalah Sports Complex, Salalah, Oman Temp: 81`/70`F. Score: Al-Nasr 3 (2-Mohamed Matoona 57' &83', John Dias - Own Goal 87') - Dempo 1 (Ranty Martins Soleye 73' off pen) Match Report as per AFC: Al Nasrs super subs Mohamed Matoona and Mohamed Mubarak had a field day as the Omani side destroyed Indias Dempo Sporting Club 3-1 in a Group B match of the AFC Cup 2006 here late Tuesday. Three crosses from Mubarak resulted in three goals while Matoona grabbed a second half brace. Nigerian Ranty Martins reduced the deficit for the Indian champions who were outclassed at the Salalah Sports Complex. Dempo did well to hold their own against their strong rivals and the first half ended goalless. Matoona opened the scoring for Al Nasr in the 57th minute after connecting with a Mubarak cross from the right. Parity was restored after a rash foul by Al Nasr goalkeeper Abdul Fael on Martins forced referee Qasem Shaban to point to the spot. Martins himself stepped up and made no mistake in equalising the score on 73 minutes. Matoona and Mubarak again combined six minutes later with the former soaring high to head in a pinpoint cross which re-established Al Nasrs one-goal lead. Another cross from Mubarak was turned into his own goal by under-pressure Dempo defender John Dias four minutes from time. Merv of Turkmenistan are the other team in this group and they open their campaign against Dempo on Match Day 2 on March 21. - Match Two AFC CUP 2006 Group B - League match Teams: Dempo Sports Club, Goa v/s Merv, Turkmenistan Date: 21st March, 2006 Time: 14.30 IST Venue:Olympic Stadium, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan Temp: 58/39'F Score: Dempo 2 (Ranty Martins 13', OG - Mahtumkuli Begendjev 87') - Merv 2 (2-Oleg Yuzbashyan 80' & 90'), Match Report as per AFC: A late own goal saw Merv of Turkmenistan fritter a one-goal advantage and end their opening Group B encounter of the AFC Cup against Dempo Sports Club of India 2-2 on Tuesday here at the Olympic Stadium. The draw left Al Nasr leading the group with three points from two matches, while Merv are second with one point from one match. Dempo bring up the rear with one point from two matches. Merv fell behind on home turf in the 13th minute when Nigerian forward Ranty Martins, who also scored in Dempos opening round defeat to Al Nasr, found the net after a neat exchange. Despite the early goal, the defending league champions from India failed to push home the advantage and came close to conceding the equalizer at least twice in the first period. Merv, who are the Turkmenistan Cup champions, poured forward for the elusive goal upon resumption and hammered away at the Indian defence. One such raid saw Clifford Miranda bringing down Yevginy Tkachenko as he was getting ready to take aim at the goal and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Oleg Yuzbashyan stepped up and sent Dempo goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal the wrong way to restore parity 10 minutes from time. But Mahtumkuli Begendjev undid all the hardwork with an own goal in the 87th minute and it looked like Armando Colacos men would earn their first full points. But Yuzbashyan had other plans and salvaged a draw with a superlative strike, which also brought up his brace, in the final minute. Merv now travel to Oman to play Al Nasr in the next group outing on April 11. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
[Goanet] OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ( AMENDMENT ) BILL - TO BE INTRODUCED?
Given the fact that there is an immediate need for introducing the Roman script in the official language act merely by a small amendment, this writer has made available a draft Bill which has since been circulated to the ruling and opposition members of the Goa Legislative Assembly, so that the same could be brought in the current Assembly session. The INC MLA's Mr Agnelo Fernandes MLA Calangute and Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Karl Vaz MLA Mormugao Mr Francis D Souza BJP MLA Mapusa and Mr Mathany Saldanha UGDP MLA Cortalim (status subjudice) have evinced keen interest in the same and could be counted to introduce it for admission from the Treasury Benches or as a private members Bill from the Opposition side. What is important is that it should be introduced now lest it becomes an emotive issue at election time. *** The Goa Daman and Diu Official Language (Amendment) Bill 2006 ( Bill No:of 2006) ABill further to amend the Goa, Daman and Diu Official Language Act 1987 Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of Goa in the fifty sixth year of the Republic of India as follows: 1. Short title and commencement:--- (1)This Act may be called the Goa Official Language (Amendment ) Act 2006 2) It shall come into force at once. 2 Amendment of Sections : In section 1 and in all other sections of the Goa Daman and Diu Official Language Act 1987 (Act No:1 of 1987) (hereinafter referred as the Principal Act ) i) in the long and short title where the figure and words Daman and Diu wherever it occurs, shall be omitted ii)for the expression Union Territory and the Union Territory of Goa Daman and Diu wherever they occur , the expression the State of Goa shall be substituted 3. Amendment of section 2. In section 2 of the Principal Act i) clauses (a) and (f) shall be omitted ii) clauses (b) (c) (d) and (e) shall be restructured as clauses (a) (b) (c) and (d) resply. iii)after restructure of clause (c ) of the Principal Act as clause (b) shall be inserted after the words in Devanagari and also Roman script 4 Amendment of section 3 In the section 3 of the Principal Act in the second and third proviso the Gujarati language and Gujarati respectively shall be deleted . In the same provisos for the expression languages the language shall be substituted Statement of Objects and Reasons The Marathi language has been given a certain status under the Official Language Act because Marathi is the language used for religious, cultural and business purposes mainly by the Hindu Community of Goa. Likewise over the past over 495 years Konkani in Roman script is used for all religious cultural and business purposes . The entire liturgy of the Catholic community is in Konkani in Roman script. The teatro Mando Dulpods which are cultural outpourings of the Catholic community is in Konkani in Roman script. The first book printed in the continent of Asia was in the Roman script. In sum and substance the Konkani language in Goa has been sustained and propagated invariably through the Roman script, in which a lot of literature is produced. Hence it is necessary to preserve and ecourage Konkani in the Roman script. This Bill seeks to achieve the above object. Financial Memorandum No financial implications are involved in the Bill Porvorim March,2006 MLA Porvorim Assembly HallSecretary to the Legislative Assembly March, 2006 *** The votaries of Konkani in both scripts in Goa Devanagari and Roman appeal to the Cristao MLAs to take the initiative and rest assured that the Hindu Bahujan Samaj MLA's will extend full support to the same. But only if the Cristao MLA's do their duty. There is no point in being hyporicites as many admit in private that they are totally for Konkani in Roman script but develop cold feet on the issue of admitting the Bill. Since the job has been made easy by drafting one tabling the same should not be difficult. There is a petition signed by several Goans in India and abroad which are supportive of the move and therefore MLA's would do well to introduce the same. The NRI Goans have also been advised to make sure that when the Cristao MLA's or MP's visit the Gulf or USA Canada UK Australia Portugal they should demand in writing from these MLA's MP's on their views on this amendment BEFORE EXTENDING HOSPITALITY TO THEM. Voters in Goa too have been discreetly advised to remind the MLA's about this issue and if they do not introduce the Bill and bring about the amendment before the next hustings they would surely bite the dust. [Goanet] Beware of posting defematory stuff!
http://technology.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,1737001,00.html Expert warns of more chatroom libel awards James Sturcke Wednesday March 22, 2006 Guardian Unlimited A landmark legal ruling ordering a woman to pay £10,000 in damages for defamatory comments posted on an internet chatroom site could trigger a rush of similar lawsuits, a leading libel lawyer warned today. Michael Smith, a Ukip activist who stood for the Portsmouth North seat last year, became the first person to win damages yesterday after being accused of being a "sex offender" and "racist blogger" on a Yahoo! discussion site. Mr Smith, 53, from Fareham in Hampshire, sued Tracy Williams, of Oldham, for comments posted after she joined a rightwing online forum in 2002. Judge Alistair MacDuff said in the high court that Ms Williams was "particularly abusive" and "her statements demonstrated that ... she had no intention of stopping her libellous and defamatory behaviour". The judge ordered Ms Williams never again to repeat the "unfounded" defamatory remarks, which included calling Mr Smith a "nonce" and accusing him of sexual harassment. Although ISPs have paid out for hosting defamatory comments, this case is thought to be the first time an individual has been found to have committed libel on a internet chat site. "The obvious and immediate potential ramification is that there will be more cases like this," said Richard Shillito, a partner at the law firm Farrer & Co. "One sees on these sites particularly unrestrained comments that people make in the heat of the moment without thinking of the legal consequences. "A lot of people post anonymously but it is possible to find out people's identity. I think people should read this judgment as a warning to be more careful about their comments." Mr Smith, a chartered surveyor, said Ms Williams' initially "innocent enough" views hardened after they expressed vastly different opinions over the Iraq war. Together with another chatroom user, who settled for £12,500 out of court with Mr Smith, they began a campaign of words against him and his family. "That is when it started getting out of control. I was called a lard brain and a sex offender and my wife was called a prostitute," Mr Smith said. Believing he had been libelled, Mr Smith and his solicitors obtained a court order to force the telecommunications company NTL to hand over Ms Williams' personal details. When she failed to provide a defence, they obtained a summary judgment. "I'm happy with the judge's ruling, but firms hosting online chat rooms should be prepared to get involved and step in to moderate defamatory statements. I considered suing Yahoo! but their discussion board is hosted in the US and falls outside UK law. "I contacted them many times and all they suggested was that I talk directly with the moderator of the forum. It wasn't until a lot later that they agreed to remove the offending posts from the site. "The best way forward would be to make it possible to sue for small amounts through the county courts. At the moment you end up in the high court and that makes it very expensive." The former Conservative party member said he agreed with the judge that the comments would have been seen only by a restrictive audience, probably just the 100 or so members of the discussion. Despite using the name MikeUKPO53EX, the other debaters logged into the chat room could still discover his profile and details by clicking onto his name. Mr Smith said he would pursue Ms Williams for the damages and to recover his costs, bankrupting her if necessary. The judge said Ms Williams must not repeat the defamatory remarks, or in any way suggest Mr Smith is a sexual offender, a sexual deviant, a Nazi or a racist or having any such tendencies. In 2000, the internet service provider Demon agreed to pay Laurence Godfrey £15,000 plus legal costs after allegedly defamatory postings about him appeared in newsgroups. Dr Godfrey alleged that the company failed to remove defamatory material. Demon argued the case could affect the entire ethos of free speech on the internet. Yahoo! was not immediately able to comment. -- TUMCHER AXIRVAD ASSUM; DEV BOREM KORUM. Gabe Menezes. London, England

-- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help others be BETTER INFORMED, The time is come for the people of Goa to ORGANISE not AGONISE !! -- -- GOA PWD WATER SUPPLY CONSUMERS PROTEST DHARNA Wednesday 22nd March 2006 on the occasion of WORLD WATER DAY at Margao. --- Over the last 3 decades people have developed a dependence on the Public Works Dept. (PWD) for their supply of portable water. Consumers have not really experienced a customer friendly approach from the PWD although it is one of Goa's major service providers. -- SOME OF THE PROBLEMS FACED BY CONSUMERS -- * A large number of meters are declared as "not working" or "damaged". These meters are not being repaired but replaced by the PWD without providing the consumers with a calibration report, guarantee card & instruction manual of the new meters. * Many water meters are now functioning as 'Air meters' as they move due to the momentum of the air gushing through the pipes. * Consumers are being billed with 'minimum charges' + 'meter rent' although they have not received a drop of water. * The map of the network of water pipes in the village is not available in the Panchayat / Municipality resulting in consumers getting sewage water in their PWD pipelines in some case. * There is no transparency with regards to the duties and responsibilities of the PWD officials like those reporting to the Junior Engineer such as the Supervisor, Helper & Valve Operator. * There are no fixed timings wherein the Junior & Assistant Engineer is available to meet up with Consumers to tackle complaints. * Boosters are used by some commercial interests to meet their large water requirements, and the concerned PWD officials have failed to curb the same. * Public taps are being misused and in some cases privatized. No monitoring of the same is being done by the PWD officials neither is the same reviewed at the Village Gram Sabha. * Free Water connections are continuously being released by the PWD although it cannot guarantee water supply to its existing paying commercial & domestic consumers. *Local Panchayats are not being consulted in laying of pipelines passing through the village resulting in waste of tax payer's money. * Senior PWD officials don't organize customer meetings to get feedback from the consumers on their services. * Acceptance of Cash payments of bills by cosumers has been abruptly stopped due to misappropriation of money at these PWD cash counters. * Disconnection of all Public Taps in Village Panchayats & Municipalities being undertaken without conducting a Water Audit which is necessary when dealing with such public utilities. * No action against the PWD contractors and officials who are responsible for constant bursts / breakdowns in the Selaulim Pipeline. *PWD proposes to take a loan of Rs.1,376 crore at 1% interest from the Japan Bank to augment the water supply system based on the Master plan on Water & Sanitation Reforms prepared by the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA) which will be a huge burden on the tax-payer. -- OUR DEMANDS - (*) Immediate program to repair and replace all non-functional water meters. (*) Provide consumers with a calibration report, guarantee card & instruction manual of the new water meters (*) Follow the 1988 circular on REBATE on tariff and rent so NO PAYMENT of minimum charges & meter rent if there is No water supply. (*)Billing format must be revised to include details of current meter reading. (*) Compulsory display of water pipeline network maps in the Panchayats & Municipal Councils. (*) Fix daily/weekly time for redressal of Consumer complaints with Junior & Assistant Engineers. (*) Senior PWD officials must hold consumer Open House / Adalats in all Talukas. (*)Chief Engineer must attend all Goa State Consumer Protection Council meetings to resolve consumer grievances at the State level. (*)An annual status report be prepared on the water supply requirements of domestic & commercial consumers and the same be made available to the Village & Zilla Panchayats and Municipal Councils. (*) A time bound review and monitoring system for "public taps" and "free water connections". (*) Full fledged inquiry by the Vigilance Department of the constant bursts / breakdowns of the Selaulim pipeline. [Goanet] The Priest, the Cook , the Guests & the Alcohol
The Priest, the Cook, the Guests & the Alcohol Now that police nabbed the 2 murderers, the motive behind the murder seems still remains suspicious. Some questions still remain un-answered (and may always remained un-answered due to the special case or treatment as this is a church matter) The priest is 61 The cook is 20 The guests- Manish 20 & Amit 28. The priest meets Manish for the first time at Margao Garden. That's where (whilst we were bachelors) used to go for fun etc as the garden, for us and for many was a 'Cruising spot' Manish visited the Priest at least on 3 other occasions.. and treated him well. Friday the 17th March: The guests visited the priest in the afternoon. The Priest call them back at night Half of my friends abstain from drinking alcohol during lent season. Remaining half would not drink or eat meat on Fridays only. But our two guests were entertained with good meals and beer & whisky too. The guests n the cook are not used to drinking that was offered by the Priest. 'Padri aponn pita ani dusriamkui dita soro ? ani korezmant ? xi baba' After meals and drinks they all go to sleep separately. But the Priest, late in the night goes to check whether they are fine and that's where the trouble started ??? Is the beer in goa is too much of alcohol contents ? or some more dose of whisky added to the beer ? If so, by whom and why ? The cook too had a peg of whisky (with added dose?) and he had a sound sleep that he could not even hear the screaming of the Priest. It reminds me of a Pop Star/Singer who was accused of adding such doses to soft drinks so that his victims get intoxicated.. Some questions may never be answered. Why they will kill some one who is so close to them? Merely not offering a job could not be an excuse.. Why entertain guests at night (and when one was a stranger) ? Why serve alcohol ? (and to those who never had alcohol before). Why visit middle of the night (could be around 2am) ?? Now, Who is to blame ? The Priest, the cook, the guests or the alcohol ?? Whatever may be the case or the motive/outcome, there is always something to learn from.. Church should also make sure that there are no priests living all alone in the church due to health & security reasons and any other temptations that may arise while living all alone (due to frustrations etc.). Now, will I get brickbats or rotten eggs for looking through one of the many possible angles ?? As said earlier, it could be any thing. Because anything is possible now a day. He told the board some of its assumptions looked like a "boosterism effort" and suggested that its authors take his introductory-level economics class. Instead of building a new airport, Carson said, the authority could instead manage future capacity demands at Lindbergh Field by using larger planes and by auctioning landing and takeoff slots to airlines at peak times. But board member Robert Maxwell wasn't buying the idea that airlines would simply buy new fleets to accommodate San Diego's capacity issues. And board member William Lynch questioned Carson's assertion that San Diego could manage growing passenger traffic without building a new airport. --- --- --- --- Young and Carson agree that passenger traffic will continue increasing in San Diego. Hello Everyone! The malicious insinuation by this writer in the below paragraph is unconscionable and tendentious. The writer is earnest in his work (I have read many of his by-lines), however lacks journalistic deonthology and judgment. I knew Fr. Eusebio Ferrao. The writer by introducing and inserting the word -intimacy - into inverted comma, and connecting it with "non Goan" "male youngsters" (all in inverted commas) is attempting to connect to readers' mindset about sexual deviancy portrayed among the clergy. This insinuation is patently false. As a reporter before making these libelous charges one must have good grounding to insinuate anything even remotely. Then this reporter proceeds with this feckless and non-factual statement: given the fact that Goans did not > find favour of employment in the parish house either > for sacristerial functions or domestic chores. I know the reporter lives in Goa. If the reporter has a little awareness (forget about knowledge) of goans, employment and domestic chores, he would not make, in his right sense, this kind of statement. Domestic chores and "scristerial" (whatever that means), in Goa are done by "outsiders" (another pathetic characterization of labor force in Goa). Fr. Eusebio Ferrao was blissfully "notorious" to open his doors to and share his table with anyone who knocked on his doors or arrived at inopportune time. His hospitality, which was his hallmark as a human being and as a priest, which endeared him to anyone who came in contact with him, even for a fleeting moment, became his vulnerability. Please reporter (I know you mean well), do your homework, talk to knowledgeable and reliable sources, and cross reference your information to ascertain veracity of what you are going to write, to the extent possible. What and how you write has consequences to make Goa a harmonious place. By the way, in his previous post on Fr. Eusebio Ferrao this reporter identified the murdered priest as "Eusebio Serrao." There are Serrao in Goa, therefore it matters to have the names correct. Also he said that his body was taken to GMC for "post partum" (no one was pregnant), instead of "post mortem." I commend his earnestness in reporting; however, I would like to urge him to be more thoughtful. [Goanet] Special scheme for Goan film makers
Special scheme for Goan film makers The Hindu Wednesday, March 22, 2006: 1310 Hrs Panaji, March 22 (PTI): The Goa Government has notified special scheme for providing financial assistance to Goan film-makers, who produce films in the state. "This scheme shall be called the Goa Scheme of Financial Assistance for Films 2006 and it will be covering feature film in Konkani and Marathi and non-feature films including tele-films, short films and documentaries in Konkani, Marathi, English and Hindi," a government notification said. According to the notification, the scheme will apply to films originating and produced in Goa by Goan producers and shall be operative annually and remain in force till March 2010, after which it may be reviewed or redesigned as per the need. The scheme aims to give financial assistance to Goan film makers with a view of encouraging production of quality celluloid as well as tele films, short films, documentaries and others to boost the image of the state in the film world, it said. It envisages grant of financial assistance upto 50 per cent of the cost of the production of a film. A producer can claim financial assistance for only one film, notification states. The State Government has clarified that dubbed version of pre-produced film will not be eligible to claim benefit of this scheme. In yet another condition, the producer shall have to do at least 50 per cent of the shooting within Goa and films should have relevance to Goa, the notification said. ~(^^)~ Avelino
[Goanet] *View From The Outer Harbour (13-02-2006)
View From The Outer Harbour By: Thalmann Pradeep Pereira ONE FOR THE ROAD "Death on the Roads" was the evocative title of an essay oft demanded from students answering the Board examinations in standard Tenth or Twelfth. So repetitive was the question in the Board's papers that it was one of those which came to be classified as a hundred per cent "expected" question. Nobody could have accused anybody of "question-paper leakage" if the question eventually appeared in the actual examination question paper. And so well prepared were the students for this particular essay topic, with both a dissecting analysis of all the "causes" of road accidents and a prophetic vision of all the "solutions" needed to be implemented to avoid road accidents, that by now Goa must be full of road accident experts. Indeed, the preparations were done well in advance very meticulously under the watchful eye of the school teacher. The preparations included a thorough classroom discussion of the subject with a clear-headed division of the material into the "introduction" of the essay, the "middle" of the essay and, of course, the "conclusion" of the essay. The essay itself went through many drafts, before the "final product" was ready for being memorised for the forthcoming exams. But the same students forgot every word of their own essay once the exams were over. In fact, if the statistics were to be collated to find out how many rash and negligent drivers have written such essays in their school-days, one would be faced with surprising results. Every time one sees a young student performing acrobatics with his motorbike, one starts wondering whether he never wrote the essay on accidents in his school days. That only underlines the fact that we are teaching our students the all-important issue of road safety through the wrong subject and the wrong method. We tend to think that in issues of road safety, listening to the teacher (preacher?) or writing an essay would suffice to inculcate an accident-avoidance type of driving in the young mind. We forget that modern motor vehicles are designed for high speeds. "From 0 to 80 kmph in 9 seconds flat" is not an advertising copy-writer's idle slogan. But how does our establishment react to this phenomenal increase in machine-power and vehicle-speeds? By erecting speed-breakers! The "voltage-stabiliser" is a typical Indian invention not found anywhere else in the world. The voltage-stabiliser does not address the root cause of the frequent voltage fluctuations which destroy costly household electrical gadgets. Instead it gives us a false sense of complacency of having protected our back-side even while confronting the big, ugly and cruel world which is facing us in the eye. So too the "speed-breaker" is a typical Goan invention of the fertile minds of engineers in the Public Works Department of the Government of Goa. The speed-breaker also does not address the root cause of accidents which have filed the obituary pages of so many newspapers with the photographs of bright, smiling youngsters who "passed away in tragic circumstances". Indeed the speed-breaker is more a bane than a boon. The design of the speed-breaker is sure to break back-bones and necks of even those who are in a vehicle moving slowly over the bumps. The experience of riding over pot-holed roads has already led many a scooterist into the tragedy of spondylitis. Instead of preventing accidents, the speed-breaker itself has been the cause of accidents for unsuspecting drivers and passengers who were not aware of the existence of the speed-breaker. Many a scooterist has literally gone flying into space after hitting the first mound of the speed- breaker on a dark night on an unlighted road. Even occupants of four-wheelers have found themselves thrown off their seats by the bumpy ride over an unexpected speed-breaker. The sudden advent of the speed-breaker leads to sudden braking by the vehicle in front of the convoy and consequently to the ramming of the vehicles at the back into the vehicles in front. And it is not too uncommon a sight to see two-wheeler drivers "cleverly" going off the road into the pedestrian foot-path in order to altogether avoid the bumps, thereby creating a danger to unsuspecting pedestrians walking along the side of the road. Indeed if the medicine was ever worse than the disease, then the speed-breaker fits the bill all too perfectly. The P.W.D. engineers must have gone laughing to the bank every time there has been a tender issued for constructing their pet invention. Indeed local Panchayat members, who are conspicuously absent when there is no electricity or water supply in the village, are in the forefront of Rasta-roko agitations drumming up support for a speed-breaker. [Goanet] CA/PS VI: HOW AIRPORTS DRIVE DEVELOPMENT
http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/site/apps/nl/content2.asp?c=euLTJbMUKvH&b=412 359&ct=2070029 Put a New Airport in the Desert By PAT SHEA Monday, March 20, 2006 Having attempted to convert the city of San Diego's underused and poorly managed Brown Field municipal airport into a privately financed and managed air-cargo facility, I can share some realities with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, and the public, about airport development. First, regional airports are big economic generators. Really big. All the econo-geeks agree. You pretty much can't do anything more economically stimulating. It allows promising area businesses to become great. It attracts far more new companies than, say, a sports stadium or baseball park. It produces a tsunami of well-paid, career-type jobs, white and blue collar, union and non-union. The whiners don't like that story. But, don't believe the nay-sayers -- most of them already have good jobs and their special interests, not the public's interests, are usually at the heart of the opposition. If you want better jobs in the future and good jobs in your kids' future, it's hard to beat a working airport for sheer economic promise delivered. Airports are really hard to do. Before taking on the Brown Field project in 2001, I was anecdotally told by a government guy that it was easier to invade a foreign country than to franchise a new airport. Seemed like an overstatement at the time. It wasn't. Airports stimulate great visionaries and public leaders, but also breed economic small mindedness and sycophantic civic cowards. You can not avoid either in this quest. So, in the end, that means that you have to really want to go forward enough to stand up the blowback that will occur. Our prior political leaders were certainly not up to it. The airport authority will not find a little safe place where everybody likes what they do. If we do this, history will be our final judge, but there will certainly be some interim judging that will be, well, a bracing experience for the weak of will. Where to put it? Depends on what you are trying to achieve. As a general rule, new big regional airports are usually sited way out there. Couple of reasons for that: First, you want to be able to "grow into" the airport for about the next 100 years. Remember the first rule: Airports are very hard to do. So, do this one like you won't be able to have a do-over for, say, 200 years. When Dulles International was commissioned 50 years ago in 1958, they sought a 10,000-acre site. To get there, they had to cut a four-lane freeway over 40 miles into thick forest. I first landed there many decades ago and rode into D.C. for 60 minutes through forest you could not see through. You also did not see a car, or truck, a yak, or anything. It was like landing on the moon. Today, every foot of that forsaken highway is packed with great corporate and commercial buildings populated by well-paid folks that live in nearby residential areas. You see, you need the open space to fill in over time that generates the jobs, growth and wealth of the area. And, the growth comes. Dulles did 2.5 million passengers in 1975. It's up to 40 million-plus now. In full build-out, it will do 55 million annual passengers (over 150,000 people per day and mega-tons of cargo). How about Denver International in Colorado? It opened in 1995, about 40 miles from downtown Denver, in what was then the middle of the boonies. (Note, it's geographically a bit easier to site airports in places that with land all the way around the center of the city. That's not the case here: we can't go west because it is inconveniently filled with salt water; can't go south due to a foreign flag; can't go north because people got there first and now everybody lives there; so, the only two real options are east, or in the middle of the city.) Denver pitched its airport tent on 53 square miles of property. Yikes! That's five times as large as Manhattan! They now have six runways and did 42.4 million passengers with in year 10 of its existence. It's a big dog. There is no question The San Diego Union-Tribune supports the airport moving from Lindberg to Miramar, even if the Marines do not think that such a good idea. You probably have observed that nobody builds a new regional airport in the middle of an established cityscape, for a couple of good reasons. One, because it is threatening to immediate neighbors (NIMBY's don't just live here). Remember, Lindbergh Field did about 17.4 million passengers last year, or about one air operation (a landing or take off) per minute. Dulles and Denver are at about 42 million passengers (plus cargo, which we don't have). So if you put a major airport like Dulles or Denver at Miramar, you are talking about three or four air operations per minute over Penasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Tierrasanta, UTC and La Jolla. Busy skies forever. And two, because the new economic fizz has no where to go if all the space aroun

But I wonder if these are the reasons to kill in a civilised world. Last week and the day of the killing a co priest conducted a service where the faithful after the services indulged in drinking. After the ensuing consumption the priest was not murdered. Pe. Eusebio is dead but I hope Goans in Goa and the rest of the world who back the new regime and its people open their eyes. BC ___ Yahoo! [Goanet] MAINTAIN PARLIAMENTARY STANDARDS
Though Parliament was firm in expelling the 11 MPs involved in the cash for questions scam, it showed dubious questionable standards in spinelessly dealing with the other batch of 7 MPs caught negotiating cuts in the MPLAD scheme. This offence is in fact much more serious and the MPs caught red-handed deserve to be ruthlessly hounded out of Parliament. The seven includes our South Goa MP, Churchill Alemao, whose versions of facts mysteriously kept changing by the day. He shamelessly got away with a mere suspension and a reprimand. It is accepted that the Goa MP was not caught in the act of accepting money but the glaring fact that he was filmed negotiating a cut of the MPLAD pie was serious enough not only to expel him from Parliament but to initiate criminal charges and prosecute him in accordance with law. Such MP's should be debarred for life from holding any public office. This may be a small step in trying to clear the stinking rot that has clogged the Indian political spectrum. [Goanet] RE: Memories of another Panjim... [Re-post]
I was greatly interested to read this account of Panjim by one who I have been fortunate to have as a then-unknown guest a few years ago in my pre-Goa home a thousand kilometres away along with a Panjimite whom I knew. After reading the article I cannot help feeling that as a "word picture" it beautifully complements Mario Miranda's sketches of Goan scenes. The cute factor is really very high. There is no guile whatsoever in evidence anywhere. No doubt it helps evoke nostalgia perhaps as intended. But the downside may be that it would reinforce a tendency to regard Goa as a place which need not be treated very seriously. That is a big mistake, I feel. Anyway, I very much hope I can renew my acquaintance in person with Isabel de Santa Rita Vaz at an early date.
[Goanet] Fr Ferrao Killing - DIG Mishra Gives Details of Crime
News -- Goa: Fr Ferrao Killing - DIG Mishra Gives Details of Crime from Daijiworld's special correspondent Panaji, Mar 21 (Tuesday, 10-00 pm): Following the arrest of the two persons hailing from UP, who have been accused of killing Fr Eusebio Ferrao at Macasana, DIG Ujwal Mishra addressed a press conference on Tuesday evening to brief the media on how the crime took place and how the duo was nabbed. The following information has been revealed by the duo to the police during the interrogation, which is yet to be confirmed. Manish Dubey has been in Goa since September 2005, on the lookout for a job. He got a job of a helper in a transport firm, but he was not happy with it. He had a chance meeting with Fr Eusebio in a garden one day. On hearing his sob story, the priest promised to find a job for him. Manish met him about 3 or 4 times ever since but Fr Eusebio could not fulfil his promise. On the night of the crime, Manish came to visit the priest along with his friend Amit. The priest offered them beer. Since they did not have the habit of drinking, they are said to have gone high with the consumption of beer. They also shared food with the priest. And then they went to bed. After about two hours, the priest is said to have come to them to enquire if they were feeling comfortable. Within minutes, somehow, there was an argument and Manish started attacking the priest, while the latter started yelling at them. To stop him from yelling, Manish is said to have held the pillow on the priest's face and suffocated him. In self-defence, the priest held out a small kitchen-knife, which they snatched from him and started attacking him with it. He was reportedly stabbed 27 times with the knife, following which the priest died. Around 4 am they are said to have taken a lift from Macasana to Margao in a vehicle which is yet to be identified. They took a train to Allahabad, their native place. However, apprehending that the police would follow them there, they got down at Nagpur, where a brother of Manish is said to be studying medicine. Since the police enquiries failed to get any information about them in Allahabad, the team went to Nagpur guessing that Manish's brother would know his whereabouts. Their guess was on the dot. Both Manish and Amit were picked up from Nagpur at 8-45 am on Tuesday. The time of arrest is said to be 12-00 on record. They were flown to Goa by a domestic flight and the team landed here around 5 pm. The soon after, DIG Mishra addressed the press meet to brief the media. The public of Goa are all praise for the quick police action and hot pursuit. Forwarded by Edward Verdes
