Tony, You are turning out to be a real treasure trove of info on the history of Goans in Tanzania. I remember going with my parents in the 1960's to visit the Demello Brothers at their building in Dar-es-salaam. Since it was their practise night, one of them carried me to their room so that I could watch them practise. I believe that was the first time I decided to be in a band. The Demello Brothers had the best band in town when Goan bands dominated the music scene. Remy led his band which played at the (old) New Africa Hotel. A few of us used to run away from the D.I. on Sunday nights, while our parents were playing tambola, and go over to the hotel were the band played in the open air. If I am not mistaken, George D'souza used to play for them too at that time. For those who are not aware of it, George D'souza went on to have his own 30 minute show on Radio Tanzania on Saturday evenings. He then played at Toronto's premier hotel for about 20 years. Returning to Remy, you are absolutely right about his Louis Amstrong songs. He did such a good rendition that people had goose bumps whenever he played and sang Louie. I know for sure that he was the inspiration for many a Goan musician in that era. Mervyn3.0 PS. Remy's youngest brother, Francis, who is based in Toronto plays both the piano and drums and has a one man band. Last year he performed at the Viva Goa. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [Goanet] Indians in Gulf remit $5 billion a year
Could such figures be estimated for Goa? FN Indians in Gulf remit $5 billion a year Indo-Asian News Service Dubai, Aug 10 (IANS) Over four million Indian workers in the Gulf region remit nearly $5 billion a year, says a report. Foreign workers, mainly from India and Pakistan, send home nearly nine percent of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member nations' gross domestic product (GDP) each year. The largest transfers originate from Saudi Arabia, which accounts for 63 percent of all remittances, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 15 percent, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News. "Close to $413 billion was remitted by expatriates between 1975 and 2002," said Dr N. Janardhan, programme manager, GCC-Asia Relations. "India and Pakistan together received about $60 billion in 10 years between 1993 and 2002, while India presently averages receipts of nearly $5 billion ever year," he told the newspaper. -- --- Frederick Noronha http://fn.goa-india.org 9822122436 +91-832-240-9490 http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

Hi Albert, I tend to agree with you that many people go through the 'motions' of the religion of their indoctrination without really understanding it. This is exactly what the 'God-men' want. Because once you start trying to understand it, it really doesn't make much sense and leaves you wanting more than just to be 'told' how to believe and what you should do to live a good life. All the rest of the dogma of eternal salvation, reincarnation and afterlife are all methods to manipulate pious adherants here on earth. Once you start investigating other religions, and India is a great place to do that because of the richness of the religious culture, you will find that there is much more to spirituality than attending mass once a week and partaking in the Eucharist. However you will have to separate the wheat from the chaff. I wish more people would open their eyes. Until then, I will continue to talk about religion and what it really means to 'BE GOOD'. This is if they are true to their beliefs and are true to themselves. Perhaps we should start a practice. Those writing a post on religion (or take a stand in a controversial field) should first state / define their own position. In fact I compliment the ones who have done so. No long explanations - just the facts and specific label. Don’t you think that would be reasonable and sensible? Dear netters The Bishop of Goa wants the society to be free from corruption. I once wrote to Dr.Babu Joseph spokesperson media input centre CBCI centre New Delhi and brought to his notice that there is bigger corruption in the church which should be first weeded out. Jesus clearly said, Remove the beam from your eye and then try to remove the speck from your brothers eye. I was surprised that he wrote back to me saying that Christs apostles all were not perfect .I was told to refer to the website www.indiancatholic.com. Right enough when I went to that site I found the site was as dry as a stone. There was nothing much to contemplate and be happy but what struck my attention was the write up by one Don Conner giving details of two Marys in the church. The first one was the Mary from the Bible whom God chose for her simplicity and her role was to bring Jesus to the world. Jesus did not make her queen of heaven or earth. The second Mary is The catholic Mary who is made rival of Jesus. She has been elevated so much and the idea is to gain business to the clergy folk. When I drew the attention ofDr. Babu he immediately removed this article from the website and now the website is dead website. Glenda Viegas _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! However Hindus worship Deities whom their statues represent and these are mostly animals like or variations thereof! They consider these deities as superior to the so called 'low born casteless people! This I cannot stomach! You see the difference? and make your own judgement! Also U should know that some Catholics 'adore' the statues of saints etc, out of ignorance. The religion does not permit this. However Catholicism permits 'veneration' of saints and praying to, asking for 'intercession' thru these saints; this is in the 'I believe' that Catholics recite almost every day; and our George Pinto is actively seeking a canonised Goan/ Indian Saint. Good luck to him!Personally I do not like this belief in saints as for intercession with God; I would like Saints to be emulated for their exemplary lives only, thats all; and the authorities should only highlight these and promote their lives. Prayer etc should be directed wholly and directly to God the Father, the Son in Jesus Christ and above all the Holy Spirit! There is no need for intermedieries like Saints. This way, the Catholics and specially Goan Catholics will have moved, rightly so, and FAR from Hindu practices! This is what I have said and repeated a few times on goanet. Will the Church in Goa enforce some of this, at least? Will the Vatican move to move away from saints and cannonisation etc. Time will tell! [Goanet] SC Ruling On Conversion Not All That Right, Says CCBI Chief (SAR News)
SC Ruling On Conversion Not All That Right, Says CCBI Chief By SAR NEWS BANGALORE, Karnataka (SAR NEWS) -- President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops in India (CCBI), Archbishop Oswald Gracias of Agra, has expressed apprehension about a Supreme Court judgment in the conversion case involving Christian Pastor P. Raju of Channapatna in Karnataka. The Supreme Court of India August 4 pronounced a verdict drawing an important line between courts taking cognizance of the offence pertaining to proselytisation, and the police lodging first information reports (FIRs) and arresting the erring religious figures indulging in the offence. A bench comprising Justices G.P. Mathur and Dalveer Bhandari said the police did not require prior sanction to lodge an FIR, or arrest a religious leader if there is a complaint of proselytisation against him. “This has serious consequences to the religious freedom practised in our country,” said Archbishop Gracias, August 8, in Bangalore. The court ruling is “not that all right, especially in the case of religious minorities”. Even though there is not a single case of forced conversion in India, some people try to make laws and hurt the sentiments and rights of their fellow citizens, he said. Archbishop Gracias is in Bangalore attending the office-bearers meeting of chairpersons and secretaries of the CCBI in Bangalore. Archbishop Vincent Concessao of Delhi, who arrived in the city August 8 morning, commented that the judgment could give way to fabricated stories and anyone could be arrested. The laws are formed based on individual court rulings so there is a need of further reflection on this judgment and take suitable action to claim our rights or freedom of religion, said the archbishop of Delhi. The Apex Court set aside an order of the High Court, which had quashed a case of proselytisation lodged against Pastor P. Raju under Section 153-B of Indian Penal Code (IPC). The complaint accused Raju of appealing to a Sankranthi congregation January 14, 2005, at Ramapura asking the people to convert to Christianity and promising many benefits and facilities not available to them in the Hindu religion. The Karnataka government had appealed against the High Court order. The court explained that absence of prior sanction, a mandatory prerequisite for a court to take cognizance of such offence, would not prevent a magistrate from remanding to police or judicial custody of an accused arrested by the police for the offence of proselytisation. There is no bar against registration of a criminal case or investigation by the police agency or submission of a charge sheet against the accused in such cases, said Justice Mathur writing for the Bench. Mere production of the arrested accused before the magistrate and the latter remanding him to custodial detention does not amount to taking cognizance of the offence, for which alone prior sanction is required, the Bench said. The High Court clearly erred in quashing the proceedings against the pastor on the ground that prior sanction of the Central Government or of the State government or of the district magistrate had not been obtained, it said. This Supreme Court order is bound to have a ripple effect on the Christian community who claim that they exist to evangelise, said a Christian leader. This ruling assumes significance in the wake of serious opposition by secular forces to efforts by some States to enact laws to prevent proselytisation. They had felt that these laws were meant to persecute those arranging legitimate conversions. ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
[Goanet] Goa Health Minister for HIV tests before marriage
http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1765165,0006.htm Goa Health Minister for HIV tests before marriage Press Trust of India Panaji, August 10, 2006 Favouring mandatory HIV/AIDS testing before marriage in the state, Goa Health Minister Dayanand Narvekar on Thursday said such a legislation would help curb the spread of the disease. The Minister, participating in a state-level media sensitisation workshop organised by a private NGO 'Community Resource Foundation' in Panaji, said the legislation, making HIV testing mandatory before marriage, would trigger a 'thinking process' in the state. Through a cabinet decision, the Goa government had decided to make HIV test mandatory before marriage and the state health department had initiated a procedure to assess public opinion on the matter. Referring to the state government's recent move to initiate legislation in this regard, which was opposed by Opposition members, Narvekar said "it (legislation) will be the need of the hour in the years to come. Some court may come with directives, making state government's such testing mandatory and then we will think that we should have done it earlier," Narvekar said. The Minister said suggestions to make the testing voluntary or counselling for couples before marriage, would dilute the mandatory provision. Narvekar assured that the state government would procure enough kits to conduct tests. "The tests could be done free in government-run Goa Medical College Hospital or at two district hospitals so that they are accurate." Printed From -- DEV BOREM KORUM. Gabe Menezes. Re: [Goanet] Elizabeth : Western where? and child sacrifices in primitive cultures
In response to this from me: [Many primitive societies 'sacrifice' (= murder) their children. These horrendous sacrifices are known to occur especially during the building of bridges in certain parts of Western India.] Elisabeth Carvalho asked: < I wonder if in the below paragraph, you have inadvertently typed Western India instead of Western Europe.> Dear Elizabeth, Thanks. I meant exactly what I wrote. Western India as in Maharashtra. [Goanet] Attempted murder _ JC is right
JC is right when he says that attempted murder is different from murder In fact the IPC section is different for each offence. Recent example of pravin mahajn shows that he was charged with attempt to murder and after the senior mahjan succumbed to his injuries the section changed to murder. Also the intent to kill is also a crime which comes under conspiracy to commit murder and has to be backed by evidence that the suspct indeed planned to commit murder. My two cents on the Abraham case: he could be tried for attempted murder. -vivek __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [Goanet] 11th August FRIDAY BALCAO: Protecting Breast feeding through the IMS Act
-- Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO -- Dear Cybergaonkars on Goanet, Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 11th August will focus on the need to Protect Breast feeding by making the IMS Act known to people. The discussion is being organised in observance of the World Breast Feeding Week. Every year the first week of August i.e. from August 1-7 is celebrated as World Breast feeding Week. During this time there are efforts to create awareness on the importance of exclusive breast feeding for the first six months and continued breast feeding for two years and beyond, along with adequate and appropriate complementary feeding starting after 6 months, to provide ideal nutrition to infants and young children. So why the The Infant Milk Substitutes, Feeding Bottles and Infant Foods (Regulation of Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 1992 as amended in 2003 (The IMS Act) and how can it protect breast feeding ? With the growth of urbanization and the emergence of the nuclear family people moved away from the traditional foods & diets and practices. This also resulted in the emergence of newer foods like the infant feeds, dehydrated milk powder, infant formulations and of course the bottle feeders. The shift from breast feeding to bottle feeding due to the sheer pressures on working mothers provided the right opportunity to the promoters of infant feed formulations to advertise and aggressively market their packaged products. The result was evident, increased infant malnutrition, morbidity and mortality. In a bid to control this health related problem the Govt. of India enacted the IMS Act but manufacturers of these infant foods found loopholes to market their products by directly approaching breast feeding mothers and even influencing the health professionals. So if breast feeding is to be promoted and protected and the unscrupulous manufacturers are to be checked then the only answer is that the provisions of the IMS Act must be made known to the people. Moreover the behaviour of the various manufacturers must be monitored by the consumers in the market place. What specific role can NGO's, Service Clubs, Mahila Mandals, and heads of religious institutions play in promoting and protecting breast feeding in Goa ? What kind of steps can be taken to implement the IMS Act with the involvement of the Primary Health Centres and the Consumer Forums at the village level? The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue. Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public. We invite you to attend the Friday Balcao event but if you cannot attend, then please send your views by post to FRIDAY BALCAO Post Box 78, Mapusa 403 507 or by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] best wishes, Roland Martins === GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy === ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
