Re: [Goanet] Pursuing Homoeopathy
From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com Here is a link to a nice article on the absurdities of homeopathy by a world-renowned British cancer surgeon and a pre-eminent professor of complementary medicine who has thoroughly reviewed the literature on homeopathy: http://www.spiked-online.com/index.php/site/printable/5100/ Here is the link to the full report: http://www.homeowatch.org/articles/jaroff.html ***I am reading this type of nice articles from 'allopathic' surgeons and physicians, but it is difficult to believe them. Have they studied homeopathy, practised the principles and compared with 'allopathy', as Dr.S.Chander Madan, for example, has done for 30 years? This is not argument of authority, but of scientific evidence. It is not enough to gulp down articles against homeopathy, and try to end the system, which will be impossible for the simple reason that homeopathy is effective with its principles. The wrong statements given about homeopathy as faith-based rituals indicate the bias and the inaccuracy of the articles. A police statement can give a verdict that it was suicide instead of homicide and dump the case into oblivion... The truth remains that it was a homicide. I would accept that homeopathy does not work if it happens in every case that it does not work at all, after having selected the correct medicine. One medicine may not work, the other medicine chosen correctly will surely work... This is our everyday experience. That is the beauty of homeopathy. It is absurd to say that if one takes globules of Lachesis (snake venom) and does not die, that the homeopathic medicine does not act in the living person and through the immune system heal the disease Regards. I know that it cannot be a panacea for all evils. People have wrong impressions about homeopathy... All these inaccurate statements are to be corrected with the genuine scientific evidence which is available today in the 'allopathic' and 'homeopathic' systems. Regards. Fr.Ivo
Re: [Goanet] Foreigners buying properties in Goa
I think this may work. Write to Sonia Gandhi and let her know the situation. Guess you will receive a positive reply action. You have to understand something of the Central Govt power. In the eyes of the powers that hold the reins; Goa is insignificant and not really important unless something drastic happens. If Maharashtra is treated insignificantly what is Goa? The only way to show them is writing to them and agitating on the ground. When I was in Delhi I met one Top Politician at another top persons place. He was discussing how to switch over. I happened to be their because I was a relation at the persons place. I understood one thing, if you want any action in Goa then go to Delhi and start knocking on the doors. If required appoint someone - to do the follow up as it cost money to be a powerful activist. To me it looks like you or your people have been affected by mining, I too have a similar problem and believe me, most people who are not affected care a two hoot about people who are affected, it's only when problems come right upto the door step and engulf you, one does not care to bother, what goes on around even in the neighbourhood. It's your problem, you fight your own battles, and it is because of this attitude that Goa is rapidly approaching doomsday, and that's the sad fact about Goa today. Today we have media that highlights practically every aberration caused, activists and NGO's screaming at the top of their voices but is anyone other than the affected involved ? To make matters worse the same filthy corrupt thrash is elected term after term. The same people who are very much the cause of every possible evil in Goa run our Government, how ironic or idiotic can that be ? Some time back there was a committee that was set up to investigate if there were any mining activities carried out in and around the wild life sanctuaries and reserves, wasn't it a total fiasco when the report was placed before the honourable Chief Minister, couple of weeks back stating that there are no such activities anywhere in Goa. That's called honour among thieves ! I have learnt from personal experience and my advise to you is, do not expect any help physical or moral support from any one other than those affected, if you can get your people together and march on even if you are the only person left walking, do so, let people who are engrossed and enchanted by every thing else other than the problems of Goa and Goans, live and dwell on the past or dream of the future, do so too, because after all who the blip cares about Seby, Venita, Geraldine, you or the people around who suffer due to the atrocities of the police and our elected politicians backed by the powerful miners and mega builders who are trying to shred Goa to pieces. These are our battles, we have to fight them and that's the naked truth Freddy Agnelo Fernandes The content of this electronic communication is intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom it is addressed and any others who are specifically authorized to receive it. [Goanet] Foreigners buying land in Goa and all that trash
Hi Freddy I am affraid I have been living in London for over 40 years and I am neither personally or directly or indirectly affected by the mining in Goa and I do not have property in Goa. I am however deeply concerned about the welbeing of my fellow goans and the land itself which I love and wish to preserve for future generations. I care deeply about any brutality against planet Earth I don't care where it happens. We only have one small planet which we are destroying because of the greed and supidity of a few people. I want to have a go and confront the miners in Goa and try to change the situation, even If I have to do it alone. I don't give up easily! I was hoping for some help and support from fellow goans around the world, I will continue to ask for support. Hope one day you will agree that all of us together perhaps can do something positive for Goa! Best wishes Carmen Miranda

[Goanet] Foreigners buying property in Goa - Whaat ?
Date: Sun, 12 Jul 2009 09:27:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Vivian A. DSouza socorro...@yahoo.com I would rather see someone who has a genuine love for Goa, buy property and beautify the property they purchase and become law abiding residents. And I dont care where they come from, as long they bring some stability, restore dilapidated properties and help keep the nieghborhood clean. Mario observes: FINALLY, another voice of sanity and common sense among all the chaff and my few grains of wheat:-)) For those who don't know, Vivian has also put his money where his mouth is and actually purchased and beautifully developed a certain corner of Goa, unlike some others who pretend to defend Goa from afar. For anyone interested in doing the same I know Vivian would be only too happy to advise and help them in any way he can. In some cases, they have bought almost entire wards. Thus, they do not only control the place but also the people. Mario observes: Dominic In a civilized society, people who own property have every right to sell it to the highest bidder. Thus these Goan families now have money that they may need to live on rather than vast inherited acres or an old and crumbling house that they would be unable to maintain. BTW, how is what they do with their property any of your business as long as they do it legally? Dominic wrote: Mind you, we are dealing with Russian mafia and international drug lords who are hand in gloves with the local machinery by paying them a very high premium, which the aam admi cannot even dream. The people of Goa have every right to rise up and demand that the local laws be followed. It all starts with electing honest people at all levels of government. Goa still has sovereignty over Morjim, and illegally purchased property can be confiscated under an honest local administration.

I am not certain about the term of Canecos. Here are the technical terms to identify the various cultural / ethnic groups in colonial Goa. Cancanos - Non-Christians born of Goan-Indian parents (Hindus from the Konkan). Canarim - Christians born of Goan-Indian parents (Catholics from Canara). Mestices (mestisos or Mestiz) - those with Portuguese-Goan ancestry. Castees or Castisos - those born in Goa of only Portuguese ancestry. Ferangi - Portuguese settlers in Goa. [Goanet] E Sreedharan resigns as Delhi Metro Chief
E. Sreedharan, known world wide as India's 'Metro man', resigned as the chief of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Sunday, taking moral responsibility for the collapse of an underconstruction span that killed five people in the capital. Sreedharan, who has been the managing director of the DMRC since its inception, announced his resignation at a press conference here and expressed lot of pain and remorse over the pre-dawn accident in south Delhi. Incidentally, Sunday was Sreedharan's birthday and he turned 77. The DMRC chief announced a four-member committee to probe into what caused the accident, claiming five lives, and said the committee has been tasked with giving its report within 10 days. I have been in charge of the Metro since beginning. I take full responsibility for the accident, and having taken the full moral responsibility I resign as the managing director of the Delhi Metro, Sreedharan told reporters. I may not be directly connected with the accident. But I am the head of the organisation and have to take the moral responsibility, Sreedharan said. The 77-year-old, who has come to be known as Metro Man for delivering to the capital a world-class Metro rail system, sent his resignation to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Governor Tejendra Khanna following the accident around 5.00 a.m. Sunday. In one of the worst accidents involving Delhi Metro, a span under construction in a congested area of south Delhi collapsed Sunday morning, killing five people, including an engineer, and injuring 15 others == Comment: Wish there were more people like Sreedharan, in positions of power, who could act as responsibly. Though the fault is probably the contractor's, the onus ultimately falls on the chief. As far as I am concerned, the Delhi Metro could be considered as India's show-piece of today - clean, efficient, and cheap. Yep, I experienced the Delhi Metro last year, though for a short ride spanning 5 stations. But I felt I was in Paris or any other major metro in the world, though the security precautions were almost like being at an airport. Outside the metro, the city was loud and brash, and one had to shout to make oneself heard. So I do understand why Indian new-comers here in Melbourne talk so loudly, especially into their mobile (cell) phones :-) . Gabriel. Access Yahoo!7 Mail on your mobile. Anytime. Anywhere. Late Anton(io) Mari(a) Pereira Khell Tiatr Festival 2009 It seems I don’t remember much of Late Anton Mari Would appreciated if any one could write one or two lines on him or on some of his popular tiatr or just name his tiatr or partio. Perhaps, he was also popular on Akash Vanni Ponnje? 'Anton Mari' name seems familiar but can’t really recollect now. Kala Academy, this year dedicated Khell Tiatr Festival to Late Antonio Maria Pereira. Senior Tiatrist Ligorio Fernandes and a son (don’t know if he is also a tiatrist) of Late Anton Mari were seen on stage on the inaugural day 13th July 2009. see pics A Khell Tiatr by Pascoal Rodrigues was staged on the first day and there are 6 more till next Tuesday. Auditorium capacity about 1000 Audience about 250-300 Tickets Rs. 30 One of the reason for low turn up is that all tiatr shown on Khell Tiatr Festival are those which are already staged here more than once. All of them staged before as 'tiatr' but now the same changed to 'Khell Tiatr' The main difference between Tiatr and the Khell Tiatr- there are no solos, duo or trio songs in Kell Tiatr which you usually see in popular Tiatr. However, 'cant' are very popular with Khell Tiatr 'Cant' are also songs (sad songs) but necessarily relates to the Khell tiatr story. Opening Chorus song also about the tiatr story. Dear Arwin, Nothing else will work to bring about what you aspire for, except 'iron clad' political will. And if at all this political will must stamp its brand on GOA to achieve all those things Goans long for and desire, they (Goans) cannot sit idle by the wayside and expect it ( the political will) to do the job for them. They themselves must immerse themselves in that political will from head to toe. Your personal established stand of remaining apolitical is a disaster, if I may say so. BTW, for the iron clad political will, we have the 10 year standing recipe. Unfortunately there are no takers. Alas! Mervyn, No doubt about it that McNamara was a very, very sharp cat. The kind of person who would probably be good in the present time, however bizarrely and brutally (I know war is brutal) he conducted the Vietnam war. My culling the excerpt from Andre Breton, the Surrealist alludes to McNamaras's responses as time wore on, which became more and more surreal. Albeit an extrapolation yet helps in a way to see such minds. That's it in a nutshell. Basically, have decided that if I say something then I may at least make analogies as seen through the lens of my visual background. Otherwise its time for me to move on. Nothing against anyone really in this convesation. So nothing against Mario, Marlon and you Mervyn. Goanet can be a good learning and sharing forum but the tone continually veers towards one upmanship and often forced analysis. I do not have interest in everything, nor have the inclination; in any case, very little help is ever forthcoming even on genuine questions, and certainly no substantive /conclusive behind the doors (outside Goanet) interaction. I have no qualms about appearing abusive against the powers that be, although none of it is directed at Goanetters, besides my occasional irate manner. It would be different if politicians and those in power were interacting on Goanet. No fear then, from afar or at close quarters. As one involved in artistic labor, I try my best to bring a perspective concerned with other ways of seeing (see Berger), having not seen Goan artists voice pretty much anything on this forum, other than the cartoonist Alexyz's through his weekly offerings which appear in the media. And as you know in the end its about none of them at all. Its how we learn to see or the path we walk on. This is the information I have regarding cabaia/cabaya.In early 1930's several doctors from Salcete including Baronio Monteiro,Peregrino Costa,Sales de Veiga Coutinho,Jose Filipe Menezes and Constancio Roque Monteiro established Liga Economico -Social da India Portuguesa to combat certain aspects of western culture ,including the trend to wear heavy western clothes in the tropics. The Liga advised people to wear cabaias and sandals (in place of closed shoes and socks) .It condemned also the custom of wearing black for funerals and mourning. Some of the members of the Liga wore cabaias-- considered a practical outfit specially for doctors I have seen a picture of Goan baker wearing a cabaia. Re: [Goanet] The Cabaia.... á là Dr. Bar ónio Monteiro
Talking of Jocu Melo, many were the Loutulim summer dances organized in his vast house that I attended. If one had a wish to meet the lovely belles of Loutulim, that would be the occasion. Provided of course one was hardy enough or filled with enough spirit to face the chaperons of these girls (usually a strict mother or aunt). Not only that, it was the first time I came across the system where when asked a girl for a dance, she would first have to get a nod from her duenna and then you would hear I am free for the fifth dance. Of course after a few Indian Navy rums, it was always difficult to count. In later years our friend the never aging Emiliano Cruz discovered the charms of Lillon, one of the daughters of the house and became the ghor-zavoinn. Jocu Melo must have turned in his grave when Emiliano decided to turn the back-yard into a pig-farm sending powerful stinks wafting over to my grandmother's house across the fields and to the rest of that part of Vanxem. Of course Emiliano must have been a struggling musician then and probably loved by the vaddo, for it resorted to complaining about it only much later. By that time Emiliano probably had no need of supplementary income. Dear Bess, Gabriel... The cartoon is, indeed, grand: Mário did it when the Loutulim (Loutulenses?) league, in Bombay, celebrated a jubilee, (1953?). while he was still (always the precocious) student at the JJ School of Arts. I have a copy but, alás, in Loutulim. Many other old timers will also possess one. But Mário would surely provide one. However, he is one of the few surviving leviathans that disdains computers and, with an utmost assinine stubornness, refuses to have any interaction with IT. Could write him, ie. in case you have an accessible surviving post-office in the area you live in. Mário de Miranda, Loutulim, Goa. What you could also resort to, with possibly a greater measure of success, is apply to Gerard da Cunha. He has, last July, published a block buster of MM's work, and in selecting a fraction thereof, must have perused the entire juggernaut covering all of six decades plus. [Goanet] Homosexuality is not a virtue
Post-Macaulay, Gyles Brandreth (in Sunday Telegraph, November 1999): I had lunch with Quentin Crisp the week before he died. We met in the Bowery Bar in Manhattan on the Lower East Side for crab cakes and whisky, and for two hours I sat in wonder at an old man with mauve hair, the self-styled Stately Homo of England. +++ (appearing as a lead-in to chp 14 (Fingerprints), in Mauve by Simon Garfield. Mauve is the story of William Perkins who discovered the color mauve (mauveine, Perkins mauve --aniline dyes) and with that discovery changed the world of color and furthermore the understanding of chemistry in relationship to disease, and unbelievably much more. Also a small link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauveine PS: Excuse the tangent. This is why I may never earn a Ph.D. (never climb that PahaD(dongor). + venantius From: Dr. U. G. [Goanet] May be Rest in Darkness - Liberation from Evil
Mervyn Lobo mervynalobo at yahoo.ca Sat Jul 11 19:15:27 PDT 2009 I do not know what the fuss is about. Bob McNamara described himself as a war criminal. Here is the link: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/The_Fog_of_War I sure am glad he was in charge of the Bay of Pigs invasion. I am sure El Supreme Commandante is glad too. If we live long enough, we will get to hear George Bush (43) uttering similar words. Mario observes: Those who have a contempt for freedom and democracy and consistently support and show sympathy for some of the worst totalitarian tyrants in the world, it may not be possible to grasp what the fuss is about. The fuss started with the death of Bob McNamara, which led to a furious revisionist assault on his memory by the remnants of the old anti-war left with hopes of condemning his legacy even his very soul. Ironically, the character assassins are those who have shown no compunction in condemning millions of innocent civilians to rot under brutal totalitarian regimes. McNamara was simply one high level official while his political leaders and legislators were making the decisions on prosecuting wars. There are some contemporaries who agree with him and others who don't. The real fuss is about the 3 million innocent Vietnamese and Cambodians who were brutally massacred after the American Democrats forced a withdrawal from Vietnam and the confrontation with the spread of communism in S.E. Asia that their own party's Presidents had initiated and engaged in, just when the Vietcong were on their knees by the admission of their own commanding general. If not for the anti-war wing who forced the politically motivated withdrawal, Vietnam and Cambodia could have been thriving free-market democracies today in the mold of S. Korea and Taiwan, instead of struggling socialist backwaters. In addition, because Democrat John F. Kennedy failed to prosecute the Bay of Pigs military action against Fidel Castro as planned, millions of Cubans have been condemned to struggle under yet another failed and brutal socialist regime where political dissenters are routinely repressed, hounded, jailed or mercilessly executed.
Re: [Goanet] Canecos
2009/7/14 Mario Goveia mgov...@sbcglobal.net Mario responds: Like Jane Gillian, Gabe seems scared to mention my name even though I am always very civil with even the most uninformed posters which is what makes me the only voice on Goanet for reason, truth and peace. Gabe could have had this role because he has been on Goanet far longer than I have, but has obviously decided not to be and for good reason. Thus we see him once again, as he has done before, cast aspersions on an anecdote I have related which included an Air India hostess friend who flew in to Mumbai from Singapore with Louie Armstrong's band. For some reason, Gabe thinks that there were no Air India flights from Singapore in the mid-60s. Unfortunately for him and his memory, he is wrong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_India Excerpt: On 1 August 1953, the Government of India exercised its option to purchase a majority stake in the carrier and Air India International Limited was born as one of the fruits of the Air Corporations Act that nationalised the air transportation industry. At the same time all domestic services were transferred to Indian Airlines. In 1954, the airline took delivery of its first L-1049 Super Constellations and inaugurated services to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore. [end of excerpt] I hope this is the last we will hear from Gabe on this issue. RESPONSE: They might have entered into and flew into Singapore in 1954 but they certainly weren't 10 years later - please show me the proof! Mario is the most abusive person on Goanet, casually calling people dolts, half brain, dim wits and what have you. Interspersed with how he has no intention of getting involved with Goa affairs, which of course he does. He also stated to Samir Kelekar that he had no intention for any input into Goa coffers, then in the next email he stated that he of course pays taxes! Paying 100/200 Rs per year in hosue tax does not qualify as any input as far as I am concerned. I lived in Singapore for a good number of years, the only Indian Airline operating out of Singapore was Indian Airlines on a direct flight to Madras. Furthermore does the Wiki state that the A.I. flight to Singapore was out of Bombay? Indian Airlines out of Singapore contradicts Wiki's, which stated indirectly that Indian Airlines only operated domestically. I suggest: Mario should go back to the drawing board; I really don't know why we suffer fools on this forumnow that is the type of remark that would come from Mario's end. At least, I don't brag that I am one who inputs and helps in Goa. It is for others to remark on it, the taxes I pay in Goa, are small change. The tips I leave at one particular place in Margao make up more than two months wages for most - still I don't think that I am inputting anything of significance. If I move back to Goa and build a business employing a few people then I could crow out and crow out aloud. Buying take away food and from the Bhel Puri Gada, is really helping the Goa economy in a big way? The Domestic Tourists, of whom many Goans are complaining, spend much, much more! If you ask me, our expat Goans are more of a hinderance and burden, with their insightful adviceunless this is followed by constructive fund raising and lobbying in the right places. In short Goa does not need us expats, those of us who have strong affiliations, we need Goa. Finally could Mario please inform us which mighty Industrialist married an Air India hostess? -- DEV BOREM KORUM. Gabe Menezes. London.

Re: [Goanet] Goanet Reader: The Inquisition, a beating stick?
I am not quite sure what this devil's advocacy of Noronha is all about. Rather, it appears to me that he is trying to paint the Goan historian Anant Priolkar as the devil incarnate. It sure looks like he is doing a shabby hit and run job on this scholar without doing the hard work, himself, of critically reading and reviewing his book on the Goan inquisition, and examining the original sources on which his compilation was based. Using a tactic we are now quite accustomed to in Goan forums Noronha is smearing this man as a Hindu extremist by placing a few choice code words such as Marathi and Hindutva-oriented in his drivel. I wish a genuine historian or student of the inquisition would provide us with a balanced and dispassionate analysis of Priolkar's account and the secondary sources that were available to him, so the readers would have real substance to consider rather than be beguiled by superficial smear tactics. In the absence of such an unbiased thoughtful treatment, let me show you how highly regarded Priolkar's book was among his peers when it first appeared in the early 1960's. Let me quote from two independent scholarly reviews of his book, written by real historians in high profile academic journals. Those who want copies of these reviews can send me private requests for them. EXCERPT from Review #1 QUOTE On the whole his account is objective and restrained. He devotes three chapters to the intolerance towards Hindus. In one he traces the evolution of religious persecution as a policy prior to the establishment of the Inquisition in Goa (1561). In another he examines the methods of conversion, asking rhetorically whether conversions were obtained from conviction, for convenience or by force?.. In the absence of the trial records, Priolkar reprints the French physician C. Dellon's classical account of his imprisonment and trial by the In- quisition in Goa in the XVllth century (using an English translation published in Hull, 1812) and the less known but perhaps more effective Ac- count of the Inquisition at Goa in 1808 inserted by the British Dr. Claudius Buchanan in his Christian Researches in India (London, 1812, 5th ed.).. Priolkar does not exaggerate the intolerant zeal of the Christian missionaries, neither does he try to understand it. For the late XVIth century his thesis is confirmed by other material which had not been available to him. A good example of it is a Franciscan chronicle, Conquista espiritual do Oriente, written by Fr. Paulo da Trindade between 1630 and 1636 and being published only now by Fr. Felix Lopes, O. F. M. (Vol. I, Lisbon, 1962.) UNQUOTE -Review by Gerald M. Moser of “The Goa Inquisition. Being a Quatercentenary Commemoration Study of the Inquisition in Goa by Anant Kakba Priolkar”; Source: Journal of the American Oriental Society, Vol. 84, No. 4 (Oct. - Dec., 1964), pp. 483-484; Published by: American Oriental Society. EXCERPT from Review #2 QUOTE Despite the catchpenny title of The terrible tribunal of the East which the wrapper of this book bears, the book itself is what it purports to be: a dispassionate and objective account of the Goa Inquisition from 1560 until its final abolition in 1812. It is difficult for a non- Roman Catholic to write with restraint about the so-called and self-styled 'Holy Office of the Inquisition', and indeed there is no particular reason why he should, but Dr. Priolkar has certainly achieved this feat. Perhaps he devotes too much space to Drs. Dellon and Buchanan, for the former escaped comparatively lightly, and the Goa Inquisition was a mere shadow of its former self in Buchanan's day, but the author has made excellent use of all the relevant Portuguese material which is available in print. He has rightly relied heavily on the documents from the Goa archives published by J. H. da Cunha Rivara a century ago, and on the more recent archival publications by A. Baiao and Panduronga Pissurlencar Dr. Priolkar has performed a valuable service in combing these works for the facts and presenting them in reliable and readable form. UNQUOTE - Review by C. R. Boxer of “The Goa Inquisition; Being a Quatercentenary Commemoration Study of the Inquisition in India by Anant Kakba Priolkar”; Source: Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Vol. 27, No. 1 (1964), pp. 233-234; Published by: Cambridge University Press on behalf of School of Oriental and African Studies Cheers, Santosh --- On Tue, 7/14/09, Goanet Reader goanetrea...@gmail.com wrote: DEVIL's ADVOCATE/Frederick Noronha There's no point getting defensive about the realities of the past. The Poor Christians Liberation Movement (PCLM) condemns the judgment and calls for a boycott of such priests who support such move as this sinful practice is against the teaching of the Bible and humanity. In a statement issued today Mr. R.L. Francis, president of PCLM stated that perhaps the Diocese of Delhi has forgetton the classical incident narrated in the Bible that God destroyed cities of ‘Sodom and Gomorra’ for this sinful activities.” So it is surprising that the church leadership is supporting this judgment”. The PCLM hails the stand taken by the protestant churches against this judgement. Several Christian leaders have expressed their shock over the judgment. In an interview to PCLM Joseph Gathia, well known child’s rights activist, said that any dilution of IPC 377 would open flood gates for the sexual exploitation of children. “Let us not forget what happened in Thailand 20 years back. This judgment is satanic verses and would pave way for making India as world centre of gay sex trade”, Mr. Gathia stated further. The PCLM urges Christian intellectuals and laity leaders to come forward and defend the teaching of the Bible and oppose any legalization of gay relations. R.L.Francis President - PCLM
[Goanet] Over 40,000 Goans return home on job losses in Gulf
Over 40,000 Goans return home on job losses in Gulf PANAJI: The large number of Goans returning home following job losses in the Gulf countries, mainly Dubai, has the state government worried. It has now initiated efforts to create a special corpus to help such non-resident Goans (NRGs). The state government has put in place a mechanism to create such a fund along with a pension scheme, if possible, for the NRGs. Our aim is to create a financial corpus which will be self-sufficient to aid the NRGs, said Eduardo Faleiro, former external affairs minister and the commissioner of NRI Affairs, Goa. A bill in this regard will be tabled in the state's assembly session this month. The welfare fund, to be based on the contributions made by NRGs, aims to provide financial relief to Goan expats in these times of financial turmoil. The level of relief to be given will depend on the expats' contributions to the fund along with other criteria like experience, qualification and their levels of designation, adds Mr Faleiro. The data available in this regard suggests that over 40,000 NRGs have returned to Goa in the past 10 months as a result of the global financial meltdown. Considering Goa's size, 40,000 is a large number. The state already has over one lakh registered unemployed. It's a major loss for the state. The NRGs are adding to the state's burden. Their return also means the remittances coming from them would stop. It's a double whammy of sorts, a state government official said. According to the Goa Migration Study 2008, nearly 12% of Goa's 14 lakh population has members living and working abroad. Of this, nearly 60% are in the Gulf region. I have reports that many from Dubai are returning home. This is a major cause for our concern, admitted Mr Faleiro. Goa enjoyed a remittance of nearly Rs 700 crore from NRGs, equivalent to 6.3% of the state domestic product. Any dent in this can significantly impact the state's economy. The state is badly hit by the world crisis, the state official said. The influx of NRGs is bound to strain the state's resources further. Coming in after a weak tourist season and depleting mining revenue, the state government needs to address the issue of NRGs with urgency. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Features/Layoffs-around-the-world/Ov er-4-Goans-return-home-on-job-loses-in-Gulf/articleshow/4774429.cms ~(^^)~ Avelino
[Goanet] Influx of migrants manageable, says ex-union home secy
Influx of migrants manageable, says ex-union home secy HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JULY 14 Even as the people across the State are up in their arms against the influx of migrants, the Commission on the State-Centre Relations New Delhi today claimed that the issue was not very serious and is manageable. There has been migration from the places like Bihar or other eastern non-developed states towards Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab and Goa, Dhirendra Singh, the former union home secretary and the member of the Commission said while interacting with media-persons at the end of the Western region consultation on State Centre relations today. Singh said this problem is witnessed mainly by the developed part of the country or a place which in several parameters a better place than the non-developed State. There are many infrastructure projects which are taken up in Goa post colonial phase and they required labour to develop the mining infrastructure or even to the different services provided to the tourists and hence they were brought in here, he said. Singh claimed that the people who come to Goa are really because they are extremely poor and really don't snatch away the higher level of the jobs. They are basically poor people who are doing jobs, same as in the developed countries where most of the Indians go and do jobs, Singh explained adding that the migrants are mainly in the unorganized sector. He said migration, which occurs due to lack of development in certain part of the country, can be tackled constitutionally and administratively. The tensions that are supposed to arise are not at that level which cannot be managed in Goa but the issue can be managed, he said adding it is not such a serious issue which cannot be tackled by the co-operation of the States. MHADEI: Singh said that the issue of great concern like Mhadei water dispute between Goa and Karnataka can be resolved through the inter-state commission. Inter state council can be involved in to resolved the Mhadei dispute if it cannot be politically resolved, he said adding that Inter-State commission is an institutional mechanism is provided by the constitution of India, which can be invoked resolving such inter-state disputes, with inputs from the Central Government. SPECIAL STATUS: Replying to a query on the Special for Goa, Singh said that the demand for special status comes practically from all States. Each state demands a special status based on its strength, he said adding it is for the Centre to take a decision. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=24553cid=26

Hello Wendell, May be the Goa Govt should learn from the Thane Central Prison. Here they have to work in sections of their choice e.g. Bakery, Flour Milling, Textile Dept, Carpentry, Jail Kitchen, Housekeeping within the Jails, Administration etc. Only Under Trials are not given that much of work. Regarding the food, there are laid down defined quantities of food [in grams] that they are entitled to as specified in the Jail Manuel. I met one Sr. Jane who is working with prisoners many years back at a prison ministry seminar in Pune. The ones at Aguada Jail, do have a good time; is what she also said. Regards Ashley

It is quite interesting to see for what CM is asking for aid. Will any of these money create any jobs for Goan youth ? It is quite interesting that National Games is more of a one time party just as celebration of 50 years of liberation. The Spectacled Cobra Venomous Average length: 4-5 feet. India's most famous snake is also one of the commonest species that is found in Goa. I have caught at least 300 cobras in the twelve years I've been working as a snake rescuer. Of the Big Four venomous snakes, the Spectacled Cobra is the easiest to handle, one reason being its fairly predictable nature: sway any object some distance in front of a poised cobra and it will immediately start swaying its head to follow the motion. So engrossed will the snake be in the moving object that should you put your hand behind the snake's head and touch it on the hood, the creature will not react at all. In fact, it will actually allow you to push its head all the way to the ground and pin it before it figures out what happened! Now you know how snake show performers are able to kiss cobras on the top of their hoods and get away with impunity, leaving you completely awed. Another reason why cobras make for easy snakes to handle is due to the innately non-aggressive nature of this species. The snake expert Irula tribe from Tamilnadu commonly refers to this species as Nalla Pambu, meaning good snake, since it always dishes out ample warnings to its would-be aggressors before actually making a strike. In fact, the whole idea of the snake flaring its signature hood is to warn its enemies to stay away. The stretched skin of the hood is held open by the elongated ribs of the third and following 27 vertebrae and the action serves to make the snake appear larger than it is. When coupled with a few mock strikes and loud hissing noises, the demo will keep even the most ardent of predators (or trouble-making humans) at bay! Funnily, almost the entire Indian population believes otherwise and remains mired in the belief that cobras open and sway their hoods in response to music! The fact of the matter is that cobras (like all other snakes) are tone deaf. When a snake charmer plays his bheen (or flute), the cobra is merely following his swaying movements, totally oblivious all the while of the music emanating from the instrument. Being one of the most famous of snakes in the world, it is no surprise that the cobra should have a host of myths associated with it. Most people, for example, are terrified of cobras as they believe these snakes seek revenge. Other myths would have you believe that if you kill a cobra, its dying eyes invariably capture an image of your face. The surviving mate arrives later, takes a look at the picture of the murderer and carries it with it till the opportunity arrives for payback. I have no problems with people believing these myths since they make people think twice before they think of killing a cobra and saves, in the bargain, a decent number of other species that might also be mistaken for cobras. Here are some more tall stories: 1. Cobras carry a diamond on their heads. 2. Old male cobras are supposed to have long whiskers, like cats. 3. Cobras mate with ratsnakes and beware the person who witnesses the mating: he or she will go blind instantly! Wish the real world of cobras would be as enchanting as that. On Tuesday, CBI officials raided the IT official’s cabin at Panjim and his residence at Porvorim. The raids continued until late Tuesday evening, as jewellery, valuables and other assets worth several lakhs of rupees disproportionate to his known sources of income have been recovered, sources confirmed. Your Excellency is normally used to address Senior Members of the Diplomatic Corps- mainly the Chief of Mission in ambassadors, and for Heads of State and government like Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Prime Ministers and Cabinet Ministers. The following titles are used to address leaders in the Catholic Church:- Reverend Father - for priests His Lordship - for Bishops His Grace for Archbishops His Eminence for Cardinals And the icing on the cake- His Holiness for Popes. His Lordship is also used to address Mayors of large cities.. I stand to be corrected. Thanks. Tony Barros. Union, New Jersey.
