Re: [Goanet] Another Goebbelsian lie nailed
Hi guys, We've reached a stage in this debate where it's time for everyone to curse everyone else, to irritate one another, and to make the finer points that assuage our bruised egos but don't shed any more light. I also think that we should be experienced enough not to get irritated when someone tries to irritate you :-) Ignoring someone can sometimes be the best way of topping an insult. Tony and others, let's move on to more substantive topics rather than get caught in flogging different body parts of a dead horse :-) And btw, what's the record for the longest non-stop debate of a Goanet discussion? I personally believe that once you go that way, you're just sparring with one or two other parties. Most Goanetters are hardly bothered with the finer points that each side tries to score. If anything, it has entertainment value. [Goanet] Freedom Fighters in Goa
I concur completely with Rajesh Dessai’s analysis of the situation vis-à-vis Goemcar freedom fighters. I personally knew two in Moira. The first the late Purshottam, fondly called Purso, was the genuine article, actively involved in the struggle. He was a gentleman. He loved singing and always took part in our yuletide ‘serenades’. Unfortunately he was prey to that common Goemcar disease that has taken such a heavy toll in our land. The second is a well known local charlatan who claims his freedom fighters pension even though everyone knows that his opportune incarceration was for some petty swindle and had absolutely nothing to do with the struggle. But I won’t delve in this time worn tale of the good, the bad and the ugly. I’ve only written this post Mr. Dessai to say that it is a pleasure and an honor to hear and read about and from a Goemcar who thought and felt and gave as much for his motherland as you have. Thank you for giving so much of yourself for our beautiful Goem. It is such a pity though that while your bravery and selflessness helped get rid of one colonizer, the aftermath which should have safeguarded Goemcar identity has only resulted in a dilution of Goemcarponn in Goem. If I remember right, age does take its toll, and memory is the first to pay; the owners of Café Prakash in Panjim are niz Goemcars. I remember speaking with the man at the helm, or rather the front desk, long long ago. He told me how his family escaped to Karnataka to escape persecution and conversion. But they had always maintained close ties with their ‘mul ganv’ and had made annual pilgrimages to their village to honour the village deity. It was fascinating listening as he told, how his entire family clan used to come over en masse, traversing hundreds of miles, to sweep and clean the village temple and perform devotional ‘pujas’. [Goanet] The follies of our youth
Dr Anil Desai’s claim of being a saffronite and even the possibility of his having been trained to hate Catholics during his early years comes as no surprise. In the Goem that I grew up, there were two distinct camps. Kokkne and Kristaos or Kirgges. Muslims were considered too insignificant a minority to merit much mention. I remember even on the village playing field, sides being chosen according to one’s religion. Koknne and Kristoas in two different teams. Unfortunately for my then Kristao team, the Koknnes had a player who went on to represent the Indian national squad. But even then, when either of the teams fell short, Kristaos played for the Koknne and vice versa. I also remember stupid rhymes making the rounds. The Kristaos had, “Kokkneancho Dev matiecho, doryian zatta chiklacho”. This referring to the immersion of Ganapati –bappa. Of course the Kokknes were no less poetic and came up with: Kristaoacho Dev lankdacho, ghu khatta makdacho.” Such was the pettiness of the divide. But there were great friendships too. Till her dying day, the mother of my Hindu friend, at every Diwali, made me a dozen ‘besand’ laddoos. I have yet to eat better ones. I recollect talking to a Hindu friend and saying that Goemcar traditions were being destroyed by Indian influences. I can still remember my shock and anger when he turned scornfully to me and asked what was greater; five hundred years of European suzerainty or millennia of Manu? As I grew in age and hopefully wisdom, this divide became increasingly irrelevant. And by the time I left Goem, I had already realized that this senseless rivalry and animosity between Goemcars only increased our vulnerability. Now that I am in full blown exile, albeit a voluntary one, I know that there is no divide. Our religions are important, but Goemcars have a great unifier. The Hindu religion is our ‘mul’ faith. It is the faith of our forefathers. Historic imperatives have bifurcated our community and set us along different religious paths. But almost all of us have common Hindu heritage. So Dotor, don’t worry about the follies of our youth. What matters is that you care for Goem and ALL Goemcars. If that be the case; nothing else matters. Sincererly Xanno Moidecar

I used to call it 'Kalimar' because of the 'padding'. Fortunately, I was the only one in the group (of circa 12) GMC chaps dining not so infrequently at Kalimar who did not imbibe the 'amrut'. And I kept a count of the orders of these beverages being consumed at the table. After the first unsuccessful attempt at padding did not happen again with us. Some other group of 'bakras' probably got hit. 3: One lesson I learned at Kalimar .. Someone who can keep a record and count .please stay sober throughout that evening. We had an occasion, a few years ago, to eat out at an Indian restaurant in Croydon (London). Two snippets: (Q1): I thought the order was for Jumbo prawns? ANS: They are jumbo prawns. We cut them into small pieces for better taste. (Q2): You billed us for 3 Kingfisher beers but we have not had any alcohol to drink on this table. ANS : I will check with duty manager. A few minutes later. ANS: So-rrri Sir. Manager said assistant made mistake. He is off-duty now. 4: Now . If I were 'in charge', I would have sent the Kalimar chap and the chap from Croydon ...to the same place i.e. North Kanara. 5: But, I am not 'in charge'. So I will settle for Bangaluru. There, I am advised, a little bit of ghuspott and bakshish is said to be quite OK. jc BTW Rajesh, please remember .it is possible (based on his post) that Tony's relations were incarcerated by the Portuguese at Aguada in 1962. My oh my! So now I am making wild accusations! When does a suggestion of a possibility become an accusation? Anyhow, I think this dicussion has gone far enough, and has started getting personal and being blown out of proportion. I think I'll stop here by stating: 1. I am an AGW sceptic. GW/GC have occurred in the past and will occur in future, but as to GW/GC being the result of human activity, I do have serious doubts, doubts that have been supported in peer-reviewed papers by climatologists. 2. Consensus among scientists is dangerous. It means they have stopped thinking for themselves. Consensus has no place in a scientific research. Finally, all those who believe in AGW should start leading by example, something that I have yet to see among firm believers and promoters of AGW. The Copenhagen summit was the ultimate hyprocrisy in AGW. No more from me on this subject, whatever the outcome of the investigations. Let truth prevail. Gabriel. PS I am not the only one who is questioning the validity of GISS and NOAA data, as a search on the web will indicate. Besides, CRU data is currently under investigation. When Aishwarya Bachan received the prize as Miss world as to what makes someone beautiful She replied that a person becomes beautiful when the heart remains beautiful and has inner beautiful qualities. Let us analyse our selves. We celebrate feasts of Mary by the dozen. But we do not love anyone. Divorces increasing, parents in the homes increasing, children are neglected etc etc. Yet we proudly sing Bhau bhoini in the church. those near the mikes sing the loudest. The word love is in the dictionary. We sing sometimes Ami sogle ek But in reality we are divided by caste, colour and creed. Why do we sing such hymns in the church ? While our lips give all praises our hearts are full of self pride, envy, anger, hatred, greed, What makes us great ? Why do we Roman catholics consider ourselves great, holy and closer to God ? I heard someone saying Jesun amcam apli avoi dilea. I wonder when Jesus passed on his mother to us. I never heard about Jesus donating his mother. why we all have our earthly mothers do we love her ? then how can you love spirtual mother Mary who is not here with us ? Can her statue talk ? answer us ? our mother can talk, she can answer us then why not keep her in your house and talk to her, kiss her etc. We celebrate Mothers day but no mother. we celebrate children's day but no children . we celebrate all sorts of days without paying much attention. Talking about freedom fighters, I recollect my father narrating to us stories of people who were sent to prison for fighting for freedom among whom was Prof James Fernandes (formerly St Xavier's College Mapuca) from my village in Assonora. I believe that not only did he not claim any benefits or pension but completed his studies on his release and earned his living very honourably. Let us not forget such people who made a tremendous sacrifice. Regards, Marshall

Re: [Goanet] Freedom Fighters in Goa
Another Genuine Freedom Fighter and a great benefactor of teachers whom I was closely associated with was the late Ravindranath Pai Raiturkar who for a number of years headed the All Goa Secondary School Teachers Association (AGSSTA). Mr. Ravindra Pai Raiturkar refused to accept the Tamra Patra and a Freedom Fighters Pension. He headed the Teachers Association when the very fact that you joined the Association was enough to give you the pink slip. Those were days in which teachers had no job security - you could have your services terminated with one months notice or a month's salary in lieu of notice without assigning any reason. Some managements used this clause to suppress any organized teachers movement. I know because I started teaching in those days way back in 1969. Raiturkar not only headed the teachers movement, but gave it a firm and fixed direction. He was a tough negotiator and was a great champion of teachers causes. It was under his Presidentship that managements were given 100 percent grant towards teachers salaries. This was achieved not without a tough fight which included a torchlight march to Panjim from all corners of Goa. Later on he fought and succeeded in getting teachers salaries paid through banks. This prevented unscrupulous managements from making illegal deductions from teachers salaries. In one particular incident, Mr. Bonfilho da Cruz was the Director of Education when the Directorate was housed in the Massano de Amorim building. The office bearers and a few selected members of AGSSTA entered the Director's cabin and laid siege to it. This was the first time that teachers in Goa had resorted to a gherao As in the seventies there was a great shortage of teachers, he was responsible for getting teachers trained on deputation. This meant that they would be paid full salaries during their teachers training course. Mr. Ravindranath Pai Raiturkar deserves to be called a worthy son of Goa. -- \\\ Tony de Sa tonyd...@gmail.com M : +91 9975 162 897 Ph. : +91 832 2470 148 ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v
Re: [Goanet] Question about Met(UK) office
Here is why what is written in the post appended below defies reason and reality. None of the claims made by the author Gabriel has any factual basis. 1. Scientific skepticism is supposed to be based on conflicting scientific data. It cannot be based on newspaper columns, sound bites of political journalists, hacking of personal emails or finding of typing errors in governmental policy documents. It cannot be based on wild accusations of global conspiracy theories about falsification of data by all the universities, scientists, scientific organizations and governments of the world. This latter type of skepticism is irrational. It is in the same vein, if not worse, as denial of HIV as the cause of AIDS, 9/11 conspiracy, UFO cover-up conspiracy, etc. 2. There is not a single research paper published by any skeptic that conflicts with the main data and conclusions regarding global warming, or by sound alternative explanations, completely accounts for all the observations made by hundreds of independent researchers across the world. 3. The claim that consensus in science is dangerous is laughable and absurd. Consensus, by definition, comes about because an overwhelming majority of scientists agree about incontrovertible objective facts. Disagreement cannot be for its own sake, or for the sake of some preconceived ideology or dogma. It cannot be based on the possibility of existence of a world-wide conspiracy to fake scientific data, and other speculations or fantasies. For example, there is a scientific consensus regarding all established scientific explanations such as evolution, genetic code, spheroidal earth and heliocentrism. No sane scientist believes that the earth is flat or that the sun revolves around it. Consensus is a natural consequence of the reality that is out there, which can be observed by any sane and rational human being. Without consensus there is no objectivity. 4. The best indication that we are dealing with nonsense here is evident from the following quote: QUOTE I am not the only one who is questioning the validity of GISS and NOAA data, as a search on the web will indicate. Besides, CRU data is currently under investigation. UNQUOTE It is clear that the author Gabriel swallows everything he finds by web searches, as long as, by hook or crook, it expresses skepticism about scientific data on global warming. His skepticism appears to be directed only at the majority of scientists and real scientific data. He is all gullible when it comes to the politicians, journalists and activists who claim to be global warming skeptics. He does not feel the need to be skeptical of the credibility and motives of these political folk whose very purpose is to treat this as a political issue rather than a scientific one. Those of us who are genuinely skeptical of what we read, know that a web search is the last thing that we can uncritically rely on, especially when we are asked to believe crackpot conspiratorial arguments. There are plenty of skeptics on the web who question data supporting every single established scientific consensus statement such as evolution, HIV as the cause of AIDS, heliocentrism, spheroidal earth, etc. Also, please note that investigation at East Anglia is a criminal investigation into the hacking of personal emails. There was no credible allegation of falsification or fabrication of data. The original 1980s data in question has always been available for independent analysis. 5. The ultimate farce in this saga, however, is equating the global scientific effort of understanding climate change, involving hundreds of experts, to what goes on in a government department. Climate research is being conducted all over the world in diverse governmental, non-governmental and academic settings, and with diverse funding sources. The claim that funding is only given to people who fake data on a world-wide scale for political reasons is a myth of epic proportions, comparable only to such things as the lie spread by like-minded skeptics that AIDS is caused by modern medical treatments or that autism is caused by childhood vaccination. And BTW, I work for and deal with government departments, both domestic and international, on a regular basis as a grant reviewer, and know exactly how funding for scientific research works. Please take it from me that it is nowhere close to what has been stated in the misleading propaganda of people like Gabriel who do not speak from real knowledge or personal experience. Scientific funding is a highly competitive process characterized by brutal critical inquiry rather than passive agreement. Cutting-edge science is not for the fainthearted. So please ask Gabriel to produce actual scientific data, in the form of graphs and numbers, to support his denial of global warming and/or his alternative explanations for it. I guarantee that he will have nothing to show. Cheers, Santosh --- On Sun,
[Goanet] Selma Carvalho: Who the Bleep cares about Colonial clerks and Goan honour?
Title: Who the Bleep cares about Colonial clerks and Goan honour? By Selma Carvalho. Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter 15 Feb. 2010 at www.goanvoice.org.uk Full text: I have an image of him in my mind, snatched from a black and white photograph. A tall, feeble-looking man, holding a glass of wine at my mothers wedding, edging towards the side as if embarrassed to be in the picture. I never met the man; he died before I was born. I know very little about the life of Conceição Miguel Gomes, my grand-father. Yet his presence looms large in our house. Stories of him permeate my mothers conversations as she resuscitates him with her memories. He had arrived in Kenya as a young man of 17 in the early 1920s and worked as a clerk at a bank in Nairobi. Of his life in Africa, we dont know much; an empty space in our family history filled now with a reconstructed memory of suppositions. At the age of 38 he returned to Goa with a smattering of Swahili in his repertoire and not much else. As was the custom in those days, he took a young bride of sixteen. He never went back to Kenya; instead he worked in Poona as a stores clerk in the British Indian army. His life as a colonial clerk is the life of so many Goan men of the early 20th century. Despite the confines that race wrought upon them, the lack of advancement in employment after a certain level, the racial inequality in the working relationship, it was still a relationship anchored in mutual respect and in the best British tradition marked by a certain paternalistic benevolence. There were deprivations, terrible deprivations especially in the early days and the remote outposts of East Africa, such as Kitui or Isiolo, where they served so loyally. The cotton-trousered clerk endured water scarcity, sitting snakes in the outhouses and other reptilian surprises on the way to work, lions who hunted near-by and thatched houses with decrepit ant-eaten roofs dissolving into their evening meals. Yet they persevered, unfailingly described by Colonial officers as the backbone of the administration and very high-quality people. Young English officers just entering the service were entirely dependent on their district clerks to teach them the ropes; how, to write a letter, to address people, to handle situations without causing too much embarrassment or making undue enemies. The District Commissioner seldom had time to train his district officers in these rudimentary tasks. Perhaps one of most noteworthy accolades paid to the Goan community in Kenya is by Sir Noel Anthony Scaven-Lytton, 4th Earl of Lytton, a descendant of Byron and an author of some note himself. Between 1922-26 he served in the Kings African Rifles, in Kenya. In a taped interview he says: They (Goans) occupy in Africa the small places, the places of respect; a first-class cook, a care-taker on whom you can absolutely rely, a bank cashier upon whom you can absolutely rely .that is the mark of a not ambitious but rather humble status in life, nevertheless one of complete integrity and respect a very good community. They served Kenya very well. The relationship between the Goan and British in Africa was marked not just by a utilitarian, symbiotic co-dependence. It was that rare relationship based on the sort of unquestioning trust shared between a parent and favourite child, diminished only by the child forever being an unequal in the partnership. Michael George Power, who served as a District Officer at Kilifi and Taita Hills, talks of how the Secretariat in Kenya would have collapsed without Goan clerks. Why? Because they were meticulous and they were honest. And because the British couldnt bring themselves to trust Africans with their money, their land and their lives. Ultimately Goans were the buffer between Africans and the British and between Indians and the British. My grandfather returned from Africa in no way prosperous. My mother tells me he had an unwavering belief in the virtue of righteousness. Like so many men of his generation, he upheld that Goan tradition of firm loyalty, integrity and honesty in his dealings at work. Words which are disappearing from our Goan vocabularies. [Goanet] History on The Birth Of The Church
I am currently reading the first volume of The Baker History of the Church. The first volume published recently (in 2004) is authored by Ivor J. Davidson. It covers The Birth of the Church from 30 AD to 312 AD. This subject has been on interest to some goanetters. As expected the first few chapters refers to the work of the Apostles, Paul and their helpers. I have yet to get to the post-apostle period. There is an extensive writing about the women surrounding Christ and his ministry to women - the widows, sinners and ethnic outsiders. Yet, there was only one mention of Mary Magdalene or the stuff one may read in Dan Brown's novel. Regards, GL

[Goanet] Re. MIGRANT COMMISSIONER
For all those who are quoting the Constitution as an excuse to flood Goa with un-controlled migrant influx!! Were these people or their forefathers actually made part of formulating the constitution; or is there any official acceptance by Goans of this constitution. It is a fair legal document but with respect the Constitution has serious flaws; as it does not take into account the genuine concerns of smaller states/populations!! After all, is it not also part of Indian terrritory? -Soter D'Souza -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. Re: [Goanet] Carnival in Goa
The Gorment does a shoddy job with the Intruz. Its almost like they are playing m*tka with some spare change: keep a few people happy, get a few tourist in, everyone is happy. Strangely, in their ads, they have pinched pictures of the Venice intruz (shameless since they up there put up a classy performance). And one other comment after wandering through crowded Margao this afternoon: where is the creativity? We had a fantastic trend-setter in Senor Martins... what a showman ! What do we have now? Pure Goichi hoch-poch! Some unimaginative commercial floats (if you have a firang doll up on the truck, you are ahead in the float world), the kunbi display are so overdone with the exception of the real thing from Quepem. And what about the Gorilla floats...or were they monkeys ? I didn't get that. To compound my misery, a fat auntie shamelessly blocked my view! Just as well. In the days of U-tube, one would think all the Bostiaos and Pedros would do a bit of research, get a little imaginative etc Na re baba. Nothing like that. Lets stick to tradition and dish the same ole Goichi peez. We are lucky, these tourists are on their first trip from gaauwait till they afford Rio. And the resort/Klub from some place in Bardez that had a yellow Por*he as their float. I really didn't get that. I mean, what was I supposed to think.speeding to the resort (or was that a klub) out of sheer thirst for a drink ? Or zipping past the potholes or speed bumps. Or was that to make me feel bad for having gotten to Ponji on a vibrating Kadamba? Never mind. As a consolation, my attention was fixed on the doll in white on the float (she had her behind to the P*rche) was having a serious wardrobe malfunction. Saarkem tension zaleem. Kitem sangchem re tumkaslits were on all sides, no maan. Saarkem mo-re, inside-outside zaupache. Saang-che mutlar, the lovely held upjust wondering, who could the dorji be of this ventilated kaabai? I worry about such things! On Sun, Feb 14, 2010 at 5:35 AM, Antonio Menezes ac.mene...@gmail.com wrote: ''' O Carnaval e uma porcaria dos mestisos de Goa. So why does the Govt of Goa encourage it ? [Goanet] Freedom fighters in Goa
I think the act below is that of goondagiri probably imported from the bharat union or east africa. BC In one particular incident, Mr. Bonfilho da Cruz was the Director of Education when the Directorate was housed in the Massano de Amorim building. The office bearers and a few selected members of AGSSTA entered the Director's cabin and laid siege to it. This was the first time that teachers in Goa had resorted to a gherao
