Re: [Goanet] Fw: Rosary in Konkani and Ladainha - Toronto

2010-03-28 Thread Sebastian Borges
It appears that JC has confused the meaning of my statement "Ladainha which is
familiar to Goan Catholics" with that of the Portuguese word "ladainha" per
se.  Therefore, in order to avoid further confusion, let me define some terms,
FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS DISCUSSION.  This stipulation, I feel, is necessary to
obviate these definitions being generalized, as is sought to be done by vested
interests wrt the definition of the word 'Konkani' in the Official Language Act.
1. littany = the Litany of Our Lady which in Latin begins with "Kyrie eleison"
and ends with "Agnus Dei.. miserere nobis"
2. rosary = five decades of the Rosary interspersed with the five mysteries
relevant for the day.
3. 'ters' = the whole prayer consisting of the Sotmanitam (Credo), the rosary,
Xoronn-yetam and the litany (in Latin or Konkani) in that order and ending with
"rozar".
4. 'ladainha' = the entire rite IN SONG beginning with the litany (in Latin),
Salve Rainha (in Portuguese), Virgem Mae de Deus (in Portuguese), Hymns to
Saints etc. (in Konkani / Portuguese / Latin) and ending with "rozar".  This is
also the meaning, I believe, in which the word has been used thus far in this
thread.

Some prayers are common to both ters and ladainha.  But there are important
differences:
(a) The 'ters' is largely RECITED whereas the 'ladainha', except for the final
"rozar", is SUNG.
(b) Credo or Sotmanitam, with which 'ters' begins, is not found anywhere in
'ladainha'.
(c) 'Virgem Mae de Deus' and the Hymns are found in the 'ladainha' but not in
'ters'.
(d) Xoronn-yetam is the Konkani translation of the Portuguese 'Salve Rainha'.
But its position wrt the litany differs: in 'ters' it precedes litany whereas
in 'ladainha', 'Salve Rainha' follows the litany.

All the prayers constituting the 'ladainha' were certainly available as
separate entities, but my contention is that their arrangement in a unique
FORMAT called 'ladainha' was done in Goa.  Just because all the constituent
parts were available in - and brought from - Portugal, we cannot claim that the
final product was also imported from there.  When all the ingredients of a dish
are purchased from the market, do we do say that the dish itself was brought
from the market?
JC has sent some links.  I could open the first one which only gives the
history of the litany and the explanation of some selected terms.  This in no
way contradicts my statement.  Being in a cybercafe, I could not open the
youtube links.  But do they contain the entire 'ladainha' format as sung in
Goa?  To simplify the matter, I would request JC to inform us whether the
entire 'ladainha' format, as SUNG in Goa existed in Portugal or elsewhere at
least a couple of centuries ago.  If yes, then we can be certain that it was
brought to Goa by the Portuguese.  Else, I shall have to stick to my original
statement, "it would be a fallacy
to say that Ladainha which is familiar to Goan Catholics was brought
by the Portuguese.  They could not have brought it because it was not
available anywhere; it is entirely home-cooked using ingredients that
were at hand!"

Sincerely,
Sebastian Borges

[Goanet] Fwd: ggrm press release

2010-03-28 Thread Ganv Ghor
-- Forwarded message --
From: Orlimgaum Rakonnmanch
Date: Mar 27, 2010 4:56 PM
Subject: ggrm press release
To: ganvg...@gmail.com

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE.

*GGRM has condemned the repeated attempts by the Chief Minister to hoodwink
the public about the Regional Plan through the medium of various
organizations. GGRM has pointed out that the Government of Goa deserves
nothing short of an ultimatum to put a planning process in place and to give
the process a legitimacy through a legal framework, rather than empty verbal
assurances to people.
*

*GGRM has pointed out that the Government is proceeding apace with projects
that defy all laws and legal norms and is guilty of gross omissions in
translating people’s aspirations into law, as a result of which scarce water
supply, filling of ponds ,and low lying areas, disregard for existing roads
and bridges, while proposing newer and bigger ones that trample on people’s
livelihoods, bad and erratic power supply are the order of the day.
*

*GGRM has repeatedly pointed out that the policy document of the Regional
Plan 2021 has itself acknowledged that as of now, the entire Regional Plan
process is proceeding outside of the space of law, thus leaving scope to act
arbitrarily. GGRM has stated that the Government of the day has not taken
any initiative to revamp/amend the Town and Country Planning Act and the Goa
Panchayat Raj Act, the Municipality Act, the Corporation of the City of
Panaji Act, and other related legislation, in keeping with the right to life
and livelihood enshrined in the Constitution and the 73rd and
74thamendments to the Constitution and in keeping with principles of
fair
hearing and natural justice. GGRM has also pointed out that neither have
the amendments to sections 16 and 16 A of the Town and Country Plannning
Act, the amendments to the Goa Public Health Act permitting health estates,
and the various laws permitting special economic zones in different garbs,
been repealed. GGRM has pointed out that in these circumstances, any
assurances from the Chief Minister at any level can only be empty words
meant to continue putting wool in the eyes of the people in Goa. GGRM has
pointed out that this is reminiscent of similar policies followed by the
present Governments as well as successive Governments in the past, where
assurances were made that actions would not be undertaken under the
oppressive laws, only to quietly retract on its word later.
*

*Further, the GGRM has also stated that the interim measure proposed by it,
pending the adoption of the Regional Plan 2021, of a total and immediate
freeze on the construction of structures in villages, not including
individual houses built for personal occupation, and so also the gram sabha
resolutions regarding VP 3 status and non-construction in eco-sensitive
zone-I have also fallen on deaf ears.
*

*GGRM calls on all people in Goa not to be hoodwinked by the assurances, to
remain ever vigilant and to take all steps necessary at every level to rein
in true democracy and self-determination as a people. *

[Goanet] About Rosary (Teors) and Litany (Ladainha) of our time

2010-03-28 Thread JoeGoaUk
Please find here the popular Ladin or ladainh or Litany both in Latin and

Also, the popular Saints Orasanvam such as St. Sebastiao (5), Sta Cruz (3),
Sam Francis (2) and Sant Anton available in MS word format.

About Rosary (Teors) and Litany (Ladainha) of our time
Gone are the days where we used to pray together as a family in front
of our ‘olotori’ (Altar).
We now have our own ‘oltori’ in each of our room that’s TV

No matter where we were, as soon as we heard the church bell at dawn,
we had to return home and we join together to say the Angelus or Aimori.
Even if we were at a function or a tiatr near the church, the program would
stop immediately on hearing the church bell, the Parish Priest would then come
on to the stage to say the Angelus or Aimori with audience (standing).
Aimorie usually less than 5 minutes duration.

At home,  around 8pm or before dinner, our Teors or Rosary starts..
It started with ‘Sotmantam’ (I believe) (Kneel Down)

There were 15 ‘misters’ of Teors (usually sitting after first khonn)
5 of ‘Sontosache’  - Monday and Thursday + Sunday  during Advent
e.g. 1st: Bodvea Gablielan ankvar Moriek Khobor dili Devacho put
Tiche kuxin etolo and Deu Esprit Santachem kurpen ti gorbet zatoli
5 of ‘Dukhiche’ – Tueday and Friday + Sunday during Lent
e.g. Poilo Mister: Suam Jezu Krist, Jetsemichea molleant orsanv
kortana rogot umelo amchea patkam passun
5 of ‘Horkache’ – Wednesday and Saturday + Sunday from Easter onwards
e.g. Poilo:  Suam Jezu Krist apleach Podven tisrea disak meleleantlo
jivont zalo.

However, when saying ‘Ruzai’ (15 khonnacho teors) all 15 mister can
be said.
(Ruzai usually on 'Alma Dis' (All Souls Day) and when 'Our Lady
(Milagros Saibinn) visits our home' 3 to 4 times a year.

A typical Rosary of 5 ‘Khonn’ has
5 Amche Bapa (and 5 Ani Amcho Dispotto..)
50 Noman Morie (and 50 Santan Morie, 150  in case of Ruzai)
5 Onod Bapak (and 5 Zoso Adim..)

At the end of each khonn i.e. 1 AB 10 NM & 1 OB, we all said..
O MHUJEA JEZUS BHOGOS/ NIVAR  AMKAM EMKOMDDANTLEA
UJEANTLIM, SOGLEA OTMEANT SORGAR VHOR ODHIK KORUN
CHODD GOROZ ASLOLEANK
At this time we often sang a short hymn usually a chorus such as

AVE,  AVE AVE MARIA (2)
Or
LAUDATE, LAUDATE, LAUDATE DOMINUM (2)
Or
SORGAR, SORGAR MHOJE MAIM THAIN VETOLOM (2) etc

at the end of the 5 khonn or the Rosary.. (Kneel Down)
We said (unsung) Litany or Ladin in Latin
Kyrie Eleison etc
Ora Pro Nobis etc

Followed by ‘Soronaetan tuka Rannie..’

One: Bhou Povite Ruzaiche Rannie, amche pasun mag
All: Kristacheo bhasaunnio amkam favo zauncheak

Then come Teors Jezu Kallzacho (Sitting)
5 khonn
One: Eh voronntache kallza Jezuchea (I know I am wrong at the second word)
All: Kor mhojem Kalliz tujea sarkem

One: Duloba Kallza Jesuchea x 10  (Total 10x5)
All: Zaum tum Amcho Mog

One: Duloba kallza ankvar Moriechea
All: Vinonti kor amche passun

Followed by our regular prayers for the family, dead, Saints etc
Usually consist of AB/NM and OB

In the end, we usually sung a hymn in full.
or during the lent or korezm  we sang
Senhor Deus, Misericordia (3)

Whole teors would take about an hour.

(During the hour, we  sometimes dozed (Jemeta ou Ghantt Marta)
and often yawned including the elders)

[Goanet] Last Lecture – monday muse (29Mar ’10)

2010-03-28 Thread Pravin Sabnis

MONDAY MUSE (29 March 2010)

LAST LECTURE

The Carnegie Mellon University had an academic tradition where top academics
were invited to deliver a hypothetical ‘last lecture’. The speaker had to
share the pick of his wisdom with the world as if it was his last chance!
However in 2007, when Randy Pausch stood up to speak, it was no hypothetical
situation as he was actually facing death!

A month before the lecture, Randy’s pancreatic cancer, after a year of surgery
and chemotherapy, was confirmed to be terminal. However, in his ‘last
lecture’, Randy shrugged off pity. He didn’t speak about death; he spoke about
life and of living a more fulfilling life, by simply achieving childhood
dreams. He offered insights from his childhood and important lessons he wanted
his kids to learn. He reiterated the need to enjoy everything we do and to live
life to its fullest before it ends.

On 25 July 2008, Randy succumbed to pancreatic cancer, but his book based on
his last lecture continues to inspire. He said that he would rather have cancer
than be hit by a bus. After all, if he died suddenly, he wouldn't have had the
time to spend as much possible time with his family and getting their life
ready for his death and beyond. Knowing that he was going to die resulted in
enhancing his remaining life.

To be better at living the life that we really want to live, we must put
together our ‘last lecture’... our thoughts if we knew we had few days to live.
We need to reconnect to our childhood dreams that lie hidden in the maze of
complexities that are created by our desperate dash towards materialistic
goals. When we envision our ‘last lecture’ and allow it to align with a
mission, we will find true meaning to our lives.

Our last lecture can truly be our guiding mission...
To BE BETTER at living life in sync with our vision!

Dear Mr. Noronha,

Thanks for your E-mail regarding the launch of Fr. Nascimento's new book

Unfortunately I'm at Delhi from the 5th to the 15th April but hope to

The relationship between Municipalities/Panchayats and their electoral
wards on the one hand and the parishes of the Archdiocese on the other,

[Goanet] THE DESTRUCTION OF GOA

2010-03-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Goa Government’s decision to freeze all new mining proposals has come
very late. It is in connivance with the administration that the authorities
have turned a blind eye to the rampant illegal mining in Goa, especially
over the last five years. Goa’s unparalleled environmental and ecological
damage has occurred during the current Digambar Kamat’s three year regime
and the preceding two years of Pratapsingh Rane’s rule.

How does the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat justify the arbitrary conversions
granted to facilitate selective Mega construction projects while the
Regional plan is yet to be finalized? Chances are that we may not see a
Regional plan even by 2021, before Goa’s forest land, hills and fields are
all converted into concrete jungles. If there was a punishment for the
destroyer of Goa it would unanimously be shared by Digambar Kamat and
Pratapsingh Rane.

One fails to understand how Digambar Kamat has the audacity of seeking
God’s blessings at every religious shrine possible. May be he has been
seeking forgiveness. God may, but the people of Goa and posterity in
particular will never forgive Digambar Kamat and Pratapsingh Rane for
destroying what was once India’s most beautiful state.

Jim F,
I am astounded by the price you have to pay for health insurance for your
family!
This is an extremely heavy burden.

You may be aware that the provinces here in Canada guarantee the health care of
their residents. This weekend, as I was gathering the documents for my tax
returns,
I found a letter from my family doctor informing me that from now on he would be
charging $60.00 for a missed annual check-up. The comprehensive check up is
free but missing it is now going to cost me money.

I guess the govt is serious about cutting costs. They know that the cost of
treating
any medical condition is drastically lower when the disease is identified early.

The time I really get annoyed is when I read about people with insurance who
wind up
with horrendous bills when their health insurer refuses to pay. I guess you
have seen plenty
such stories on 60 minutes about people who had to sue before their insurance
company
paid for their treatment. This is a uniquely American problem, driven by the
need for
profits, I guess.

A few days ago, I was reading about this car manufacturer who decided to locate
its factory
in Canada, rather than in the USA, because the local govt would bear the cost
of health
expenses. They would be saving $600 on the costs of each car by locating in
Canada.

Once again, I must congratulate President Obama and the democrats for the super
work
done on this new health plan. However, without universal health care, US
residents are
nowhere close to receiving the health care that the residents of all other
western
democracies enjoy.

[Goanet] "Colonialism" versus "liberation"

2010-03-28 Thread john menezes

"Colonialism" versus "liberation"

Goans born post 18 December 1961 and educated on make-believe history
that Goa (used generically to include Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar
Haveli) had been "reeling" under Portuguese "colonialism" may be very
surprised when told by their generational predecessors that, except for
the Governor General and the Chefe do Gabinete, the Secretary General
and all departmental heads, indeed all civilian administrative
personnel, were Goan and men of high integrity, that 99 percent of the
police was Goan, and 100 percent judges were also Goan with no back-logs
in Goan courts, and that Goa was represented in the Portuguese
Parliament in Lisbon. A former Portuguese President, General António
Ramalho Eanes, has recalled recently how in Goa he had served under a
Goan military officer and that it was more like a family than a military
unit (Expresso, Lisbon, 27 January 2007).

Very similar was the position of the French possessions in India.
If the reader wishes to seek documented evidence of the "liberation" of
Pondicherry - indeed the same may be the case in Goa where today the
administrative chief and departmental secretaries, collectors, and a
portion of the mamlatdars, judges and a substantial portion of the
police are non-Goan - he/she is referred to " Imperial Burdens:
Countercolonialism in Former French India" by William F.S. Miles
(Publisher: Lynne Rienner, USA/UK, 1995) where, on pages 46 and 47, "One
former freedom fighter, a defector from the French Indian police,
describes the general post-merger mentality of (anglophone) Indian
discrimination:
"The public have regard for the services I rendered to the nation. But
not the officers of the Indian Bureaucracy who consider themselves to be
the sons of Gods..The Indian bureaucracy are still behaving, even
after 27 years of the British withdrawal, as the Imperial agents, and do
not treat our people with fraternity. The Bureaucracy of the Union
Territory of Pondicherry recruited from all parts of India do not treat
the local people and officials as brothers. There is general complaint
in Pondicherry that these Indian officials look down [on] the people and
local officials and behave themselves as conquerors." (Dadala circa 1974).

Earlier, on page 34 in the same book, the view is expressed of a French
Indian veteran L.S.R. as follows:
"Were there a referendum today you would have at least 50,000
Pondichérians opting to become French...The Indian regime was more
tyrannical than the French ever were..So severe were the Indians
that those in the youth movement were the first ones to opt, in 1962,
for French citizenship."

This book is indeed a sound investment for the Goan as well.

out the lights at 8.30 PM at the Earth Hour.

Unfortunately the Accompanist on the Guitar didnt have the right Chords.

As far as your million dollar question is concerned, my view i.e. from Canada,
is that not only do
the residents of Goa seem inactive but they also seem unwilling to support

Mervyn,

I am serious about the cost of insurance here in the US, my man. The cost is
ridiculously high and out of line! The plan I got, is sold by Oxford (Freedom
Plan). You can probably go online and request for a quote yourself. If you
still don't believe me, I'll show you my cancelled checks, if we happened to
meet down the line ... and beer is on me.

Don't get me wrong ... one could get cheaper plans. I could get one for about
$10,000 - if you call that cheap, but none of our existing doctors - whether my
kids pediatricians or the primay care physicians would accept the cheaper plan.
I asked the pediatrician why would he not accept it and the answer he gave me
was that, the insurance punks would pay him hardly any money on the cheaper
plan. So he told the cheapo insurance guys to take a hike.

I am sure Dr J Colaco and the other physicians on GoaNet are fully aware of
what's happening with the healthcare cost in the US. Its high time that
everybody share the cost of healthcare - the individuals who can afford it and
the corporations who want healthy workers.

Jim, you have explained the whole concept of Health Insurance in the US
perfectly. The Insurance Companies are only interested in enhancing their
profits so that their top Execs can be paid fantastic bonuses. They do not care

I am truly delighted to know that my very good friend and debating
opponent (during college days in Goa) Michael Pinto has embarked on
this project from the very cold climes of Winnipeg, Canada.

For those who may wish to know, Michael (aka Mingloo) was my mentor in
the field of debating. Those days, the debating field had some very
strong contenders including Michael Pinto, Pandurang Ginde, Yadunath
Joshi and Santosh Lad. And then there were the impostors e.g. Wilfred
Mesquita and Jawaharlal Henriques. No prizes for guessing that Michael
and yours truly, wiped out the opposition. The impostors, as we had
predicted, joined (successfully or otherwise) the field of politics.

BTW: If anyone has any contact with Pandurang Ginde, would you please
advise? It would be nice for Michael and me to renew contact.

Michael and I have been talking about this project for some time. The
initial plan was to get it videotaped in Goa ...but it was kind of
difficult to organise. So, it appears that the "Canadian" production
will go.

At least, there will be none of this divisive nonsense of What is
Konkani, Devanagri/Antruzi/Romi etc etc. It is best to leave that
nonsense to the weirdos.

That brings me to this point which I read a couple of minutes ago:

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Eastern immigrants steeped in Western mores (Armand Rodrigues)

2010-03-28 Thread Goanet Reader
EASTERN IMMIGRANTS STEEPED IN WESTERN MORES

By Armand Rodrigues
arod...@pathcom.com

In the assimilation process, most immigrants to Canada, from
the Eastern hemisphere, have had to adapt rapidly to societal
norms within codes of conduct, language nuances and social
interaction, somewhat dissimilar from those they left behind.
Hardly so, for those from the former Portuguese colony of
GOA, in India -- a mere dot on the map of the world.

At first blush, Goans abroad have to be perceived
as an enigma by an anthropologist or by their
neighbours and peers. They hail from the East, have
the same pigmentation and attributes as one from
the East, yet are distinctly Western in deportment.
To understand this seeming paradox, it is necessary
to cast a backward glance in time at the
evolutionary process that brought about this unique
  condition.

The moulding process commenced with the Portuguese gaining a
foothold in Goa, in 1510 (they held sway until 1961). They
came with a sword in one hand and a crucifix in the other.
Mass conversions to Catholicism followed. With conversion,
came a sea-change in eating habits. The cow may have been
holy to the Hindu, and the pig unholy to the Muslim, but to
the omnivorous newly-minted Catholic, nothing was anathema.
'Demon' alcohol came with the territory.

Other factors were also conducive to the
re-orientation phase. The first printing press in
all of India, came to Goa in 1556, and gave Goans
an edge in Western education. The first Jesuit
college was established in 1574, followed by a
secular school in 1773. English schools commenced
in the 18th century. Steamships made their debut in
1870, and the railroad in 1886, thus putting things
on a faster track and opening up opportunities
  farther afield.

Before long, the Portuguese declared Goans -- regardless of
denomination -- as legally equal to themselves. The
cross-fertilization of cultures had long before that earned
Goans the sobriquet of 'Romans of the East'. Catholics ate,
drank, dressed, worshipped, engaged in sports and behaved
like their Western counterparts throughout. In this
crucible, everything seemed to coalesce for the Goan, making
him or her the complete package. Women were being accorded
parity with men.

With the advantage of a Western background superimposed on
their Eastern ethos, Goans could readily make themselves at
home in any new environment. The commonality was not lost on
the British and the Portuguese, who treated Goans as
preferred recruits for their colonies. Sporting and social
interaction with their recruiters helped polish any rough
edges the Goans may have had.

In the 1960s, political changes in emerging Third
World countries certainly jolted the Goans from
their complacent stomping grounds. They got
propelled into repositories of Western culture,
such as England, America, Canada and Australia in
the South. Hardly a ripple of cultural shock was
evidenced by them in their new environment. The
antecedent metamorphosis had groomed them for
receptivity and a soft landing. It was easier for
them to burn their boats behind them and come
without any real cultural baggage to weigh them
  down.

The majority of Goan immigrants to Canada fell into the
domain of the white-collar worker, with no major disparity in
education between men and women, or in self-confidence. (Of
course, like most other immigrants, Goans had to endure the
humiliating Canadian affront to their education and work
experience). Noteworthy is the fact that Goan women were able
to make a valuable contribution to the family income and
expedite home ownership.

Goans are not found living in concentrations or enclaves in
Canada. This diffusion has perhaps helped congruity with
their neighbours and made for better inter-personal
chemistry, specially when the Goans' unmistakable occidental
orientation becomes manifest. Integration and putting down
roots came about rapidly.

For Goans, the umbilical cord has been severed and any
residual Eastern tug of the past no longer competes with the
Western pull of the present. They are here to stay and to
leave behind a favourable imprint on their adoptive country.

[Goanet] Fw: Rosary in Konkani and Ladainha - Toronto

2010-03-28 Thread Sebastian Borges
It is gratifying to note that some Catholic Goans in far away Canada are trying
to keep a purely Goan rite alive among their brethren settled there.  This at a
time when the recitation of the Rosary in Konbkani has all but disappeared in
Mumbai.  There was a time when the Rosary was a regular activity in Catholic
homes there every evening, especially in the clubs or kudds where it was not
only compulsory for the residents but also began at 8 pm sharp.  Later, in Goan
Catholic families it became a bilingual affair with the children reciting in
English while the elders said their prayers in Konkani.  Today, everyone says
the prayers in English, the grannies who never went to any school saying, "Ah
father, fourteen heaven "   The Toronto Goans seem to attempt a reversal of
this trend.  My congratulations and all luck to them!

However, it would be a fallacy to say that Ladainha which is familiar to Goan
Catholics was brought by the Portuguese.  They could not have brought it
because it was not available anywhere; it is entirely home-cooked using
ingredients that were at hand!  Even today, it is found only in Goa and
wherever Goan Catholics have taken it along.  Ithink it is not found in any
other language or culture, anywhere in the world.  How come?

Like the Intruz and KristaPuranna, the Ladainha too was a device to replace
something that the converts were habituated to, before their conversion to
Christianity.  [Christmas came to be celebrated post-Winter solstice, for an
analogous reason.]

The Goan Hindus have a rite called Satyanarayana Puja which is performed for
almost all the reasons that the Catholics celebrate the Ladainha.  In this puja
too the prayers are sung.  Therefore, as a substitute, we have a conglomeration
of the Litany of Our Lady in Latin, Salve Rainha and Virgem Mae de Deus in
Portuguese all set to music. (Are the different music scores for these
prevalent anywhere else? I doubt it.) This is followed by the singing the
hymns or 'orasanvam' in honour of the saints of the family (whose images are
present in the oratory).

I would be happy to learn of any parallels elsewhere.

One of the age old traditions in Goa is the celebration of the ladainha, which
was brought to Goa by the Portuguese. The ladainha is a form of worship that
includes singing and recitation of hymns and prayers in both Konkani and Latin.

Ladainhas take place all year round to celebrate a birthday, anniversary,
christening or a devotion to a particular saint. At the end of the ladainha,
boiled grams and snacks are served to the participating devotees.

Michael Pinto of Winnipeg is heading an initiative to video tape the ladainha
and the reciting of the Rosary in Konkani. It will be available on the internet
on May 1st, 2010, the beginning of the month of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The idea is to preserve and promote our language and culture so that the
younger generations can continue this tradition. This event will take place on
Sunday, April 11th 2010 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church at 2950 Midland Avenue
(Midland and Finch) in Scarborough from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Light
refreshments will be served in the church hall immediately following the rosary
and the ladainha.

For this event to be a success, Michael is looking for members of the Goan
community who can recite the Rosary in Konkani, for singers to join the choir,
any donations to help defray the cost of this project and for volunteers.
Everybody is welcome, hymn and prayer sheets will be provided.

Please see flyer (PDF) on this event. More details can be found at
www.konkanirosary.org. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Pinto
directly at konkaniros...@hotmail.com.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Article 19 And All That Jazz (Dr Oscar Rebello, Herald)

2010-03-28 Thread Goanet Reader
Article 19 And All That Jazz

We can get our act together and
demonstrate that we're
completely committed to stem
the rot, writes DR. OSCAR
REBELLO docosca...@rediffmail.com

Shantaram Naik is a decent, honorable man. Importantly, he is
a true blooded, loyal congressman (an endangered species,
almost a kin to an Eskimo in Africa). As Rajya Sabha M.P he
has passionately argued a lot of issues affecting Goa and
occasionally has got a rap(e) on his knuckles for some foot
in the mouth comments.

Recently, he opened a Pandora's box, when he made a forceful
plea on the floor of parliament, that Article 19, Section 5
needs to be debated and applied to Goa.

What does Article 19 Section say? Part III, Article 19
Section 5 of the Constitution of India states: (d) Any Indian
citizen can freely travel throughout India (e) Reside or
settle in any part of the territory of India.

Interestingly it also states that

  (5) Nothing in sub clause (d) and (e) of the said
clause shall affect the operation of any existing
law in so far as it imposes or prevents the state
from making any law imposing reasonable
restrictions or exercise of any of the rights
conferred by said sub clause either in interest of
the general public or for protection of interests
  of any scheduled tribe.

So, Eureka, we have hit the proverbial pot of gold at the end
of the rainbow. Our Holy Grail, the key to special status. We
can stem the deluge. Our State Government can seek to enact a
law to prevent "outsiders" buying Goa.

However, according to many lawyers I spoke to, they are
unanimous that this Act is a near impossibility under the
present circumstances. For two reasons:

(i) India, as a Union, already faces a severe threat to
almost being torn asunder by a million mutinies everywhere.
Mumbai, the Naxal belt; the north east; J & K. So this
insular "Keep Indians out of Goa" war cry will never resonate
in our temple of democracy (and morally, do we have the right
to make this demand when Goans settle and thrive everywhere).

(ii) Goans are by and large a peaceful, accommodating
malleable people hardly reputed for any violent insurgencies.
And it is only through a barrel of a gun, when thrust into
the Indian state, that talks of autonomy etc. are actually
entertained by the Indian Government.

Hence, Article 19 though a palpably enticing panacea for our
ills, will always remain a distant mirage for the foreseeable
future.

So, does this mean that Goa allows herself to skid down this
disastrous road to perdition. Can our land still be salvaged?
Can sanity shine like daylight through this maddening
darkness?

Yes! Yes! A Resounding Yes ! But for this your focus and
efforts Mr. Naik must not be at the centre. You need to
squarely set your targets on the Goa Assembly, your hideously
corrupt Government and the people of Goa.

Unless, we can get our Act together and demonstrate to a man
(and woman) that we are completely committed to stem the
rot, the rest of the country will care fiddle sticks for us,
and the land mafia will continue to treat us like a bunch of
chorus girls and boys, happy with a few dollars thrust into
our panties.

My 10 suggestions, for us to get going.

(1) Along with the top brass in your Government (if they are
not busy waltzing with G7) evolve a consensus along with all
Opposition parties and NGOs and other stakeholders on the way
forward. Saving Goa is in everyone's interest. And there are
equally committed, passionate leaders who love Goa, who will
play ball only if you guys in Government are deadly serious
about saving Goa.

  (2) You will need to evolve a water tight mechanism
to scrutinize and accordingly reject outright all
giant land deals that take place in Goa. The State
level Committee (SLC) can be packed with more
honourable men and women with impeccable
credentials to monitor these GIGA land
transactions. The SLC must have the statutory
backing of your government to achieve this
objective. No one can buy Goan land if Goan land is
not allowed to be sold on a gigantic scale.

(3) Your Government must devise ways to make alternative use
of this land, to profit the owner. If every Goan, thinks that
the only passport to happiness is to palm off his ancestral
property to a seedy land shark for peanuts we are in deep,
deep trouble. For example: Why can't we pay an environment
tax to a bhatcar who has a huge orchard, forest or
eco-sensitive zone piece of land? If there is a monetary
reward to keep your property in a virgin state, people will
buy your argument.

(4) Sincerely engage industry and housing bigwigs, economists
and environmentalists to draft the alternate economic model
for Goa. But then for this alternative, sustainable,
pollution free economy to flourish, beady-eyed, 10 percent
extortionist ministers must be kept at a huge distance and

To Goanet -

Dr. Anil Desai has accurately summed up the deceit of the
ex-Convener of GBA Dr. Oscar Rebello here -

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-March/191418.html

It is curious that Herald would not publish Dr. Desai's column.
It was in Herald that Dr. Rebello first revealed that he had
"danced footsie" with Digambar Kamat. Yet Ashwin Tombat,
the Editor, strangely has nothing to say on this important
matter, this betrayal of the Goa Bachao movement by its
then-convener.

This same Tombat had no qualms raising questions when
Soter & I organized the Goa People's Assembly, hiding behind
the veneer of "Tomkat." He did not bother to contact me for my
side of the story. The super journo that he is, he simply divined
his gossip and promptly pee'ed in his rag.

(Tombat and his cohorts are miscalculating here. The
days of suppressing information and ideas are long gone. Goans
find out what's what and who's who one way or the other.)

Editors and journos in Goa know which side of their bread is buttered.
Another bhailo editor-defender of Dr. Rebello was allegedly rewarded
with lakhs of rupees for being the faithful lapdog and dutifully
barking at Manohar Parrikar from behind his tipple-washed desk.
Admin Noronha can perhaps present us his droppings on
this topic of bread, butter & Digu (Go for it, Noronha!).

Now we hear that Dr. Rebello wants to erect high rise buildings
for ghatis in Goa. I mean, why not? Goan roads are
overflowing with milk and honey (thanks MARG!). So who
will get the contract for this bee in Dr. Rebello;s bonnet?
Perhaps the secular builder from Margao? Well, why not?
He made the cut in Dr. Rebello's 10 great Goans didn't he?

Dr. Rebello weekly exertions in the Herald to resurrect his
footsie-tainted credibility have been noted. But as we say in
America - not happenin' dude.

Modi's appearance a victory: BJP
TOI - 28 Mar. 2010

New Delhi
Modi answered over 60 questions
Ahmedabad: Deputy inspector general of police (retd) AK Malhortra, of the
SC-appointed SIT, questioned Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for his
possible
role i the post-Godhra Gujarat riots for five long hours beginning Saturday
noon, with a half-hour break at 2 pm. He is said to have answered 50 of some
63 questions in the first session after which he addressed the media right
outside the SIT. Soon after he was criticized for not turning up for
questioning on March 21, Modi had written a letter addressed to "my beloved
countrymen" where he said that rumours were being spread about him to
defame Gujarat. TNN

Comments:
If the 5 hour questioning by the SC appointed SIT of the master criminal
conspirator, the CM of Gujarat state, becomes a VICTORY for this debased
party called the BJP, it only goes to show that this shameless BJP is trying
to shovel out victories from stinking gutters of shame. That Modi was not
hand-cuffed and taken for questioning should be the biggest favour that the
SIT has done to this master criminal, where next to Germany's Hitler, he has
overseen the bloody massacre of more than 60 people, including a
Parliamentarian, just because they were Muslims, when they were begging him
for help, let alone the thousands of other men women and children done to
merciless death. Is this any matter of pride???

This is the lowest that the BJP has sunk to. The sub-lowest will be when
Advani along with Modi are lodged in the darkest cell of the Tihar Jail,
together, for the rest of their miserable lives. And, it is coming to that
with Anju Gupta and Jakia Jafri, adamantly working towards this. The
nation should give these two ladies the highest merit awards possible.

What a lovely and unique way of adding significance to the World Earth Day.

My loss that I missed out attending, but somehow was not aware of the
activity at Saligaon. Next time. But just to let you know, did turn
out the lights at 8.30 PM at the Earth Hour.

Dear Mervyn,

Where is the joke in what Jim has written?

The only part Jim has inadvertently (perhaps) missed out is the following:

After the $3000 deductible is met, the insurance companies (depending
upon the network policies) will cover 60-80% of what they term as
reasonable charges.

A particular health insurance company's version of 'what is
reasonable' has zip to do with what has been agreed as reasonable by
the AMA.

And -never mind what Viviana writes- (and I believe both Marlon and
Jim have alluded to this) There is NO such thing as "free" health
care. Somebody (else) is paying for the free-ER care which is mandated
by law.

Dear Rajan-bab,

Thanks for the courtesy of your reply.

If one understands 'religion' in the context of power and control, the
way I do, one will come to the same conclusion as I have personally
reached i.e. those in quest of power will destroy any symbol or centre
which does not submit to it. Those that submit are absorbed within the
power structure, albeit at varying levels on the power-ladder.

This would not be a novel idea. And no one people has been immune from
this effect of power + land grab. It is my believe that no one
dispossess another of land and power - by peaceful means. It is always
a concoction of Machiavellian treachery, misrepresentation, and (if
necessary) brute force.

As far as the magnitude of the problem, it is possible for it to be
debatable. Personally, I am not sure if ALL the events were recorded,
and that too recorded in a non-partisan fashion. For, those who record
history, tend to glorify their own and demonify the other side. As the
saying goes: One side's terrorists become another side's freedom
fighters.and glorious one's at that.

So, one has to fall back on a reasonable explanation as to why the
Buddhist shrines almost disappeared from the subcontinent; that too,
before the arrival of the Muslims. (I also have a Nepali friend who
has promised to allow me access to jpeg images of Nepali documents
which will support the view that (at least in the northernmost part of
the subcontinent) Buddhism was suppressed by the pro-Brahman forces.

I will believe it when/if I get to see the jpeg images my next
challenge will be to have them translated into Hindi or English.

Accordingly, I disagree with you but I accept that the past is what
one learns from - so that one does not repeat the evils of our
forebears.

good wishes

jc

BTW: I do not personally know Pravin Sabnis but I know individuals
(whom I trust) of differing faiths and even one who has no faith.
Their opinion of Pravin Sabnis, uniformly, is diametrically opposite
