[Goanet] On a loose end in Panjim?
A friend was travelling by Panjim and asked what could be done in a morning. Here are some suggestions. What are yours? In terms of things to do... * Goa museum is at Pato, the very end of Goa's Nariman Point (near the BSNL Building). A bit hidden by the Goan-sized skyscrapers, but maybe worth looking into. * Xavier Centre of Historical Research and Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendra are interesting (both Jesuit-run centres) at Alto Porvorim, along Bakibab Borkar Road (go in at the watertank on midway between Panjim and Margao, towards the east from the watertank, 2 kms). They have fascinating libraries (and XCHR, an art centre, small but coming up... with some Goanetters involved there!) * Architect Gerard da Cunha's Houses of Goa museum (near Nisha's Play School at Alto Torda, about 2 kms from the XCHR/TSKK is worth visiting). * Likewise with the Christian Art Museuem at Old Goa. The museums are kind of 9-5 open. FN PS: There was a museum of goldsmithery due to come up at Sangolda, anyone has an update? Mapusa has its own charms (in a crowdy and unpainted setting). Like the Other India Bookstore bookshop, with its interesting selection. The coastal stretch comes to life only in season. Congratulations, Goanet! I am glad to see Goanet thriving, in spite of all our limitations! It is a platform for news, views, discussion, dialogue. I have learned a lot, I do not know how much I was able to teach, since this is my profession! All topics should have a place in our dialogue. I thank the Founders as well as those who are taking pains to provide us with good reading. Regards. THAT'S DIFFERENT. A nice, calm and respectable lady (Mona) went into the pharmacy, walked up to the Pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said: Mona: I would like to buy some cyanide. Pharmacist: Why in the world do you need cyanide? Mona: I need it to poison my husband. Pharmacist: (Exclaimed with big eyes) Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband. That's against the law! I'll lose my license! Mona: I don't care, but I want to kill my husband. Pharmacist: They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide! The lady (Mona) reached into her purse and pulled out her mobile and showed him the recording/shooting in which her husband hugging and kissing the Pharmacist's wife. [Goanet] COLUMN: Time to boot politicians heading sporting bodies and events
Time to boot politicians heading sporting bodies and events By Nisser Dias nisserdias at gmail.com SMS to 9422437029 At this very moment our country is reeling under a mess conceived and executed by a senior congress Member of Parliament Suresh Kalmadi who got himself nominated as the head of the Commonwealth Games. With less then fifty days to go for the event to unfold, the infrastructure be it directly connected with the sporting events or the state in is total disarray. Almost on every day basis we can see visuals of incomplete works at the venues in New Delhi on our television screens. Here was a golden opportunity of showing India to the world in a new avatar. But no, most of our politicians have proved to be bane for this country and the young citizenry have resigned to their fate that as long as corrupt politicians are allowed to rule the roost, mother India will not march ahead as it should. The allegation of financial mismanagement indicate the depth of level our politicians will stoop to get their pound of flesh, which clear indicates that the welfare of the country is not their prime goal at all, though they might beat their breast in public proclaiming their dedication and love for India. This country boasts of more then a billion population but where are we placed in the sporting world. We are not even in the list of progressing countries, even though India clinched its first gold medal in recent years. Why is this happening, the answer to this question is simple, it is because most of the politicians head the sports associations. For them it is lucrative in every sense, firstly there is huge amount of money involved, (wherever there is a scent of money there has to be politicians) secondly heading the associations give them the clout and command over a large section of population involved with that particular sports, which increases their popularity. But the question is do the boards of these sporting bodies all over the country scrutinize or study the capabilities of that politician in that particular sport. It does not look like because none of the politicians heading the associations or boards have much experience in sports. It seems that they are accepted on boards to curry favours with the governments. Let us take the example of Suresh Kalmadi, who is currently heading the CWG organizing committee. Do we know anything about his sports background like whether he represented his school, college, village or state in any sports? Do we know about his organizational skills and to trust him with organizing something of magnitude of Common Wealth Games? And the result is he has brought disrepute to India. Then lets us take the case of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, he became the president Board of Cricket Council in India (BCCI) and is currently the chief of International Cricket Council (ICC). This Maratha has not even held a bat in his youth, only time he have handled a cricket bat or cricket kit must be when he was distributing it specially during election campaigns. But he still manages to have an iron grip on the BCCI who administration and functioning is encompassed in secrecy. Here I would like to make a mention of Lalit Modi, the creator of T20 cricket format. I will not deny that he organized three Indian Premier Leagues (IPL) to stamp his organizational skill, but to expose his alleged financial fraud an Indian politician who alleged wanted his share of the big biz also got exposed. Ultimately sports in India is all about money, cuts and commissions to the politicians, otherwise how does one explain that Suresh Kalmadi and his team alleged tried to get commissions on toilet paper. Coming closer home, former minister and Aldona MLA Dayanand Narvekar continues to rule the roost as the president of Goa Cricket Association even after being charge sheeted for alleged criminal conspiracy in the ticketgate scam. Just to brush the memory of the readers, excessive tickets were allegedly allowed to be printed and sold during an ODI between India and Australia on 6th April 2001 and the result was police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse ticket holders wanting to get into the stadium but even then the Fatorda stadium was overcrowded thereby leading to endangering human life. Dayanand Narvekar who has knowledge of the game and has played club level cricket in Goa went on to become vice-president of BCCI even after the scandal and nine years later has even managed to schedule another ODI in October this year. But besides making this association cash rich, what have they contributed to the sport, besides organizing fifteen days summer camps for kids the contribution is negligible, thus indicating his love for the sport is selective. If at all two young Goan cricketers made it to the IPL for the last three years it is because of their own determination because even today the GCA does not provide much facilities and

The geographic location of the poster should remain private as well, unless the poster wishes to divulge it. The geographic location, the IP address, the time, the PC it was sent from, are all embedded in every message you send. There are other things embedded too. Other interesting things that the authorities find invaluable. Someone suggested the other day that people were saving draft messages on an ID and getting someone else to open it at another address. They claimed that since the message was not sent from one place to another, no one could intercept it. This too is incorrect. The moment anything enters a server, a record is kept and is available. As an example, there are several tools, available for free, where I can check out every website that you have visited in the past ten years. 5. If you happen to use your employer's resources or sending out emails on your employer's time, Helekar could easily figure this out and turn around to screw you if he wants to. Ofcourse, folks who are self-employed and who use their own resources to post, should not have to worry. But rest of the folks ought to be on guard about this. It has got to be a real retarded organization that will bar employees from using the internet. The progressive organization will actually encourage its employees to use the internet to drum up business. In fact, increasing, employers are encouraging their employees to use social networking avenues to spread the message(s) of their firms. At some places, there are entire departments using social networks to spread the message of the organization. As for those who use their employers recourse's illegally, maybe they do deserve what the company promised them. [Goanet] Why Goanet is like a Goan cyber-taverna Re: Goanet 16th Anniversary
There are those 'professional letter writers', who keep writing letters-to-the-editor by the dozen, if not the hundred. Some in Delhi have entered the record books for writing the largest number of letters to the editor and having them published. So, to say that Goanet is a surrogate letters-to-the-editor column when you seldom get rejected is, in my view, untrue! I think it's the closest thing to the Goan cyber-taverna for the following reasons: * You can get into a fight for absolutely no reason, shouting all the time soddat reh maka (leave me, you guys... I'm going to bash him up) and someone will actually come along, massage your ego, hold you needlessly when you don't need to be held, and implore you not to get into cyber-fisticuffs with someone else. * You can drink without ever having to pay. The more you drink, the more someone else pays (by way of spam overload!) * There are no women in the taverna (and almost none have survived on Goanet) * You can make a drunken boast, and nobody will hold you down to it the next morning. * You can curse (in polite language only please, it needs to get past those maderateurs), insult, offend, twist someone else's words... and pretend nothing ever happened the next morning. * You can curse the taverna owner (as long as you pay your bill!) Likewise, you can curse the extremist moderators if they block a post, or even if they release a post... or even if they allow through a certain post on Christmas eve or on Boxing Day! Their sins are anyway many, and their curses are proportionate. * You can gossip, slander (but please do it smartly, it needs to get past the post) and so far nobody has been held up for contempt of court or breach of priviledge by our very honourable judges and politicians. * Even Aires Rodrigues posts on Goanet (and maybe even the spiciest of cyber-chicken dishes is served in this cyber-restaurant). Never mind that Babush's supporters and other finger-cutters haven't found this cyber-address yet. * Every byte you post on Goanet somehow goes to support a good cause (think of 'Goa Sudharop', Goa books, the stray dogs, politicians and their supporters seeking to discredit their rivals, the many attempts to target 'ghantis' and Muslims, etc). Did you even suspect that every peg you drank in a Goan taverna, a tiny micro-paisa worth goes to support some library cess somewhere in the State? And you thought the Portuguese brought in only bad things to Goa like when they imported the cashew some five centuries ago! Mogal Goenkar bhavano ani bhaynano, Amcho Ravindrabab Sonsarak aantaralo, Ravindrabab Gelo! Padmabhushan Ravindra Kelekar breathed his last after a prolonged illness at 11.30 a.m. at Margao. His death would be the biggest news for days and weeks, locally, nationally, internationally-such was his image… He died on a day when we remember blessed Mother Teresa Of Kolkotta, He died in a year when we are celebrating birth centenary of his close friend poet laureate of Goa Bakibab Borkar, He died after having received some of Country's highest literary honours-the fellowship of sahitaya akademy followed by Dnyanpeeth award, we expect nothing less than at least two days state mourning and his final rites with full honours and state salute.. Re-Posting an article on Ravindrabab..written just a month ago…. Ravindra Kelekar: A Cultural Institution Published on: July 25, 2010 - 22:58 BY NANDKUMAR KAMAT (Courtesy, The Navhind Times, Monday 26 July 2010) (http://www.navhindtimes.in/opinion/ravindra-kelekar-cultural-institution) ON July 31, the prestigious Dnyanpeeth Award would be conferred by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Ms Meira Kumar on veteran Konkani writer, scholar and philosopher, Ravindra Kelekar, affectionately called ‘Ravindrabab’. This is also an honour to Goa and the Konkani language which figures in the world’s top 125 living languages. The ceremony would take place at Kala Akademy, Goa. Goan identity, Konkani and Ravindrabab have become synonymous. No writer in the post-liberation era of Goa had been as influential as him in exerting and asserting moral and ideological influence on younger generations. The Dnyanpeeth Award crowns his stellar service of more than 60 years to culture and literature. At the age of 85, Ravindrabab towers in the contemporary Goan society as a guiding light of knowledge and wisdom. He has been a cultural institution himself. He has influenced and moulded at least 3 generations of Konkani writers and set out a clear political, social and cultural agenda for Konkani language and literature. By participating actively in politics and being a torch-bearer of the movement to oppose Goa’s merger with Maharashtra, Ravindrabab carved a separate and exclusive niche for himself distinguishing him from the puritans who considered literature as merely a single-minded apolitical creative activity. His pointed and hard hitting editorials in the literary magazine which he had founded–the ‘Jag’ Konkani monthly made Goans sit up and think. Jag continues to be the only exclusively literary and oldest Konkani monthly in the world today. Ravindrabab offered this literary platform to young writers who then blazed their own trails on Konkani’s literary horizon. Goa’s own Kakasaheb Kalelkar As a great bibliophile and voracious reader of world literature, Ravindrabab set high standards for writers and contemporary Goan thinkers. Four decades ago he said that Konkani would need to promote new subjects like ecology and cosmology. He may be one of the few writers in India possessing an astronomical telescope and spending hours watching the night sky from his courtyard at Priol. Considering the need to present astronomical knowledge scientifically before the Konkani speakers, Ravindrabab came out with a Konkani book on Astronomy–‘Brahmandatale tandav’. He was one of the first writers in India to recognise the need for books on ecology and environment in Indian languages. Exposed to contemporary trends and currents in global and national literature, Ravindrabab’s life was enriched by the great Gandhian scholar, Kakasaheb Kalelkar. Today for the five million strong Konkani speakers scattered in more than 100 nations, Ravindrabab is Goa’s Kakasaheb Kalelkar. His simplicity, non-assuming and affectionate personality, deep humility before the literary greats and above all his almost fanatic single-minded faith in the future of Konkani society, culture, language and literature made him a hero of the Goans during and after the Opinion Poll. Ravindrabab recognised the 3 aspirations of Goans–recognition for Konkani as the official language of Goa, statehood and inclusion of Konkani in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Between 1984-1992, these dreams were realised after a lot of action, advocacy and struggle. Forseer of Problems facing Goa When he appeared on Konkani’s literary horizon, there were only a handful of Konkani books published every year. Since then Konkani has come a long way thanks to all-round efforts of publishers, writers and scholars. Konkani publications are flourishing. Very soon the state of Goa alone would publish more than 100 Konkani books per year. One of largest dictionaries in any Indian language–a 2029-page Konkani illustrated dictionary published by Panaji’s Rajhauns shows the power and potential of the modern Konkani language and its’ linguistic, lexicographic scholarship. Such an effort would not have been possible without Ravindrabab’s moral

[Goanet] Stop glorification
LtE, Gomanatak Times, 27, Aug. 2010 Stop glorification ALL of a sudden there is a break out of a craze to glorify GBA and it's self styled leaders, through the media and for Goa's sake, please stop this fad. GBA and its leaders have only dry sucked the people by holding two public rallies at Panaji and Margao with much funfare. What followed? In the general elections in the year 2007, the same GBA and all-most all its leaders actively canvassed for the same corrupt rulers. What followed this? Wanton destruction and plunder of Goa's environment, which in fact doubled up, What will follow? In the coming elections, the same GBA will run behind the same corrupt leaders ruling Goa today. And then, land conversions of steep slopes and low lying fields and change of zones based on proposed roads will go on with impunity. Then, why hosannas to members of Task Force, supposedly true lovers of Goa and GBA and its leaders. Let us stop glorifying these publicity seeking people. It's not about crab mentality but about bitter truth of vows unkept. Re: [Goanet] On a loose end in Panjim?
*yawn* How boring Irmao Fred you are! One wants to do stuff yothe museums have just three or four items decorated in cobwebs and often not worth viewing. And its costs money to enter right? If you cannot touch stuff (or take a free souvenir or two, it ain't worth it- this is India's first failed state after all!!) Here is what yours truly would suggest in Panjim, its all funkot: 1. Enter the police complex, wander around and get lost in there. Rub shoulders with the latest from the over-night catch by the Goa Puli-ce! Some of them are celebs. Watch first-hand the Goa pulice taking 'hafta''. You will likely find files unattended- put them in your 'poti' as a souvenir. They are quiet transparent and open about how they do business. Stay away from any grill-section: that is the prison section yoits difficult to get out once in! 2. Had your fill, you have three choices: I suggest turn left and go to the public libraryits free and smelly. But you need time-pass right? You may bump into some pompous and over bearing librarian- avoid that. You can see first hand how an invaluable treasure of century-old newspapers are rotting. Wander around. Get into an office. If you see something lying around, put it in your 'poti', as a souvenir (they don't allow potis but...). Then get into the library...and ask for a book. Its an experience how a 'eficient' Government of Goa employee shakes itself from slumber and opens their computer, them searches for a book. trust me...you'll never find the book. What do you care? 3. You have had enough, get out and go acrossDepartment of Industries and Mines. That is the cash cow. Pretend to be an out-of-state grease-ball looking to invest in Goa. Thats your morning chaai. While there, do visit the Department of Information (if you manage to jump the puddle of water in front of their door...no, it ain't rain water). Tell them you are jorno from some outstation newspaper- some more chaai. 4. You still want mo? Sure, walk back to across and to the Government Print press. Try and dislodge Asia's first presss (nobody knows for sure)...its antique and quite priceless. If that is difficult, wander up.pretend you are looking for Saku from Peadne. Tell them he is related to a minister (don't say who). Sit down, There are lot of chairs. Try and chat up some of the female employees while they fix their make upshock them and ask them what they do? 5. This would have taken you through an hour or soand all the free chaai you've had. Now its time to relive yourself: walk up to the Mandovi, stand on the banks and let it flow, let it go...aye, make sure Madame Goswamy does not have her magnifying glass out and watching you from across the Mandovi, in Betimoror...Joe Go International is hanging around with his Canon around his neck. Importantly, don't fall over into the river..you may end up at the bottom of a casino! ederick Noronha fredericknoron...@gmail.com wrote: A friend was travelling by Panjim and asked what could be done in a morning. Re: [Goanet] Stop glorification- Comments
I was expecting this post from Soter and therefore I did not take the trouble to type the GT Letter to Editor from Leonard Lobo, which I have appreciated very much. Having said that, Leonard is on track with the title 'Stop Glorification'. Nisser Dias' extra-ordinary glorification of Dr. Oscar Rebello borders on stupidity if nothing else. Nisser must understand that 'one swallow, the summer does not make'. It was I who asked/requested Dr. Oscar to consider contesting from Panjim in 2007. And this was much before the GBA was put together. But the saddest part of all the GBA joke was that it professed Apolitical' stance aka ' Go all out to help the Congress because it, the world, the Church, did not want BJP to romp home'. But this 'apolitical stance' went a little too absurd far. It remained absolutely mum on who should be projected'. And as Leonard rightly says, these jokers (all, not only the gullible GBA) got the same (major) flies who circle around the 'pile' re-elected. However it is note-worthy that the wings of the fattest fly from Saligao were cut, as also the yesterday's birthday-bash boy. Goa does not need a charismatic figure who has the ability to 'lick' the microphone. We had a living, as well as the dead charismatic figure in Bahusaheb Bandokar who, with his screwed-up vision for GOA has impeded its progress and sanity enough. And we are still garlanding the traitor. So much for being GOANS. GOA, on the contrary, needs a charismatic, disciplined, ethically and morally sound and most importantly, a self-sacrificing and written-down SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE which will not be susceptible to amendments at every mile of the walk. Until GOA and GOANS deem it fit to have this SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE instead of glorifying one singular person, Goa will not see the change that it is waiting and looking for. My utmost salute to the Vascokar Leonard Lobo for his frank and valid observations. After all, it takes Vascokar and Moidekar Lobos' to think sensibly. :-) Cheers floriano goasuraj 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org for expanded scrolling party presentation on the Home Page - 'Announcements' Section. http://www.goasu-raj.org/gen/articles/70.asp for stabilizing grass-roots self-governance and redeem it from the Political 'Pariahs' - Original Message - From: soter so...@bsnl.in To: goa...@goanet.org Sent: Friday, August 27, 2010 4:58 PM Subject: [Goanet] Stop glorification LtE, Gomanatak Times, 27, Aug. And then, land conversions of steep slopes and low lying fields and change of zones based on proposed roads will go on with impunity. as well as previous communications to the Members. I had written well in advance of the Association calling a meeting that I would be unavailable, as I had some engagements travelling on the Continent, in and out of the Country and finally culminating in a long stretch holiday in India. The President was well aware of and despite this, called an E.G.M., in effect so that only his side of the story would be listened to. To make matters worse the E.G.M. notice which concerned me was not even sent to me...that is what natural justice means to the President. I even wrote a letter which was to be read to the General Body but the President decided that only his output should be heard. It was a despicable feat of engineering, in which the members were deliberately misled. The President stated that he didn't want to go to litigation; I had warned him in a letter that I would take to task each and every Board Member individually and collectively. Furthermore, the President did not inform the Membership that the G.O.A. Directors were forbidden by the Constitution from embarking on any adventure. They are only permitted to defend a case brought against them and their costs to be paid by the Company, if they are successful. The President declared openly that he wanted me expelled, whatever he told the members was the Gospel truth, after all he is a holy man, brother of the Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay. [Goanet] We Are Mightier Than Death (By Ravindra Kelekar, translated by Augusto Pinto) reposted by Nandkumar Kamat
Goanet Reader: We Are Mightier Than Death (By Ravindra Kelekar, translated by Augusto Pinto) On Monday 24 th September 2007 Augusto Pinto had posted this beautiful translation. It is most appropriate as state of Goa is mourning Kelekar's death...thanks Augustobab I take liberty to post it again considering the fact that Ravindrabab is no more…it sums up TATO's philosophy and his stoic, sthithpradnya attitude towards life, death, everything We Are Mightier Than Death By Ravindra Kelekar I need a siesta of at least half an hour every day, for when I get up I'm so completely refreshed, that I can attack the evening with as much enthusiasm as I did the morning. Yes, I feel it's a new day altogether. Yesterday was Sunday. There were quite a number of guests, and so I missed my afternoon nap. By evening I was dog-tired and so I went to bed at nine -- pretty early for me. As a result I woke up at 4.30 in the morning. I had a wash, and then I thought I'd read, but then I realized that I'd have to put on the lights and wake everyone up, so I went out and sat in our razangovn, which is what we call the quadrangle of our house in Konkani. I said to myself -- let me watch the sun rise. There was dead silence everywhere, a silence which the occasional screechy chirp of an insect or two made more eerie. Slowly the eeriness began to assume a character of its own. I glanced upwards and recognized quite a few constellations and stars. As I gazed at them, I don't know when, but I dozed off to sleep. When I woke up again it was a little later in the morning but still dark. The clock in the sitting room went tick tick tick tick. I've no idea why this sound gripped my attention but I began to feel that this tick tick tick tick was being deliberately directed at me. I shuddered. Somehow a feeling began to creep over me that this sound was the sound of Death, striding purposefully towards me, and every-time I heard it go tick tick tick tick, I felt it had moved that many steps closer to me. I got a start and said, is He coming so soon? Damn it, I've so many tasks left incomplete, I must get them done and owe (over) with or else they'll be left unfinished. I got up and went inside to work. I am quite like anybody else. I know I've got to die some day and I also know that no one but no one can escape death. That even the very greatest have had to suffer this fate -- that too I know but somehow I've always lived my life without ever feeling that I was going to die. Death was what happened to other people. I would accompany them to the crematorium as part of the funeral processions. But I'd never really believed deep down in there that one day I would be the corpse. Even at my advanced age. So many of my companions have gone: some in the prime of their lives. In that sense death has been my constant companion. Still, I can't quite fathom that death will get me one day. The knowledge that everybody dies is one thing, to actually have death knocking at your door -- that's the kind of intimate experience that's quite something else altogether. At one point of time, a sadhvi named Rehana Tyabjee figured in my life. One day she told me, My brother, there's absolutely no doubt He'll come. Don't waste your time waiting for him. Just think He's already here, right in front of your face and He's going to take you away today itself. Fix this notion in your head, and then go about settling your accounts. Whatever you'd planned for today, do now itself. And, if you can, finish what you'd intended to do tomorrow. Only then shall you learn to live life as it should be lived, not simply pass through it. Unless one lives with the consciousness that Death is going to take you away any moment, life will never have any depth. Life has some value if it has depth; not length in years. The words of Sister Rehana reverberated in my ears. I'd sat down to work, but these musings over Death seemed doggedly determined not let go of me. All of a sudden it struck me, Do I not have to die too one day? Of course I have to. Then why not die today itself? Today, this very moment let me die and be done with it. If Death came what could he take away from me? Nothing. Nothing but my worries, right? Well, why shouldn't I, of my own free will, give them away on my own? Look, they won't be coming along with me when I go, and after I'm gone, they're not going to stay behind to trouble anyone. The second I'm gone they'll vanish too. So why not get rid of them right now itself? For a moment or two this thought gripped my mind my mind and I felt a whole load of worries vanish in a flash. I suddenly felt weightless! And I began to swim in an ecstasy of blissful liberation. Over the last quite a few years, there've been quite a few things I've voluntarily given up. I've stopped taking quite a few responsibilities. And

One of largest dictionaries in any Indian language–a 2029-page Konkani illustrated dictionary published by

[Goanet] Government cannot keep National Highways acquisition on hold
There is no provision in the Land Acquisition Act to keep the acquisition on a temporary hold. Which powers did the govt invoke? Under sect 4(1) of the Act the person nominated to perform the duties of the Collector has full powers to do all deeds including hearing under sect 5(a) and can refuse to accept the instruction of the govt because such an instruction is not as per the Act. The keeping the land acquisition on hold clearly means the government issued sect 4(1) notification in haste without doing proper homework. If that is so the only recource provided by the Act to the government is to de-notify the sect 4(1) notification. Another alternative is to allow the sect 4(1) notification to lapse on completion of one year. But, what seem to have forced the govt to take the step are the Municipal elections scheduled in October. Contestants close to Congress would find it difficult to win if the NH issue hots up. To that extent the Government is trying to fox aam aadmi. This is in response to report in Times of India: On Wednesday the state government decided to temporarily keep on hold land acquisition proceedings for widening of NH 17 and NH 4-A till the alignment issue is sorted out. The decision was communicated to the NHAI which is undertaking the highway broadening. In a letter addressed to the project director, state under secretary (revenue) Pandarinath Naik said, I am directed to convey the government decision that the land acquisition proceedings of NH 17 and NH 4-A shall be temporarily kept on hold till the issue of alignment is sorted out. Officials said that Wednesday's decision means that hearings being held as part of the land acquisition process would be stopped. Alignment work in collaboration with the land settlement and survey department, will continue, sources said. Copies of the letter have been dispatched for information and action to district collectors G P Naik (South) and Mihir Vardhan (North), principal chief engineer J S Rego, and competent authorities for land acquisition Anthony D'Souza (North) and Agnel Fernandes (South) among others. Last month environment minister Aleixo Sequeira had cancelled public hearings on NH 17 widening and had written to chief minister Digambar Kamat and revenue minister Jose Philip D'Souza asking that the land acquisition process be put on hold till the alignment was finalized. To questions in the Goa assembly, he had stated that the NHAI had sent different alignment plans to different government agencies for widening of the national highways running through the state. The NHAI consultant has also come under criticism for errors in drawing up the alignment at various stretches. As reported earlier, hundreds of structures face demolition if the NHAI plan of 60 metres width or up to 40 metres wherever possible, was to be retained. When the issue was raised in the Goa assembly, a house committee was set up to go into the imbroglio. Last week, the chief minister who heads the house panel announced that a re-survey of NH 17 and NH 4-A would be conducted while trying to reduce the width of the road where structures stand, to 35 metres. In view of the indecision on the part of the state government to either stop the land acquisition or take a different alignment, citizens' groups were planning to intensify their agitations. NH 4-A diversion action committee has planned a public meeting on Friday to garner support against the NHAI project. var zz=0;var sldsh=0;var bellyaddiv = ' '; var stindex=100; var stp=150; var taglen=0; var tmp; var tagcheck = new Array(div,span,br,font,a); var storycontent = document.getElementById(storydiv).innerHTML; var firstpara = storycontent.substring(0,storycontent.toLowerCase().indexOf()).toLowerCase(); function findptt(cnt){ zz++; if(zz == 10)return;

[Goanet] Subject: We Are Mightier Than Death (By Ravindra Kelekar, translated by Augusto Pinto) reposted by Nandkumar Kamat
Dear Nandakumar, I thank you for posting again Ravindra Kelekar's ruminations about death which I had translated with the help of Padma Shri Suresh Amonkar. A few days ago I was about to translate Ravindra Kelekar's tribute to the great Konkani short story writer Chandrakant Keni In the Diwali - Christmas mega-issue of Jaag 2009 which is the journal from where Ravindra commented upon Konkani movement and of course encouraged and promoted many many writers. I wanted to do this more because it revealed not only much about Keni, and also about those times, but also about Kelekar and his friends, such as Vaman Sardessai's lives. In his tribute to Chandrakant Keni, Kelekar writes like an old man. I say this because he does not have the energy to source the information that he has, he does not have the time to figure out the years and dates of the incidents he speaks about. And yet even before he speaks about Chandrakant Keni, he alludes to the environment in which he was part of - and that swirls from a censorious Portuguese regime, of the 40's to living with Mahatma Gandhi, to ... Here are the sections which I have already translated. Chandrakant By Ravindra Kelekar. Once upon a time a troika haunted Panjim: Dattaram Sukhtankar, Vaman Sardessai and Ravindra Kelekar. They were gluttons for good literature - in Marathi and in Portuguese (the languages through which most world literature came to us.) We used to read all this great stuff and discuss it till the cocks came home to roost, and then say, Damn it - all this should have been in Konkani! Really it was our desire to have all that writing in our own language, and we used to go around propagating this idea. Among us Vaman was the dreamer, the idealist, while Dattaram was the hard headed realist with feet always on the ground. And among them I think I was the golden mean, neither leaning to this extreme nor the other. Although we all had strikingly different personalities, we somehow got along extremely well. One day Vaman started to say,We keep babbling 'Konkani' 'Konkani' ... but we never really do anything about it... We never write a word in Konkani. Until and unless we begin to publish in Konkani, we will have to put up with the slurs of those who describe our language as a 'boli' - a dialect. Why don't we start a periodical in Konkani? I expected Dattaram to object,To start a periodical is not child's play! But to my astonishment he said,Let's do it! Frankly in those days, thinking of running a periodical was no child's play. To start with, we had to get the Portuguese government's permission to begin publication. Anyway, we wrote to the government saying we wished to start a literary journal named 'Mirg'. After a few days, the government wrote back saying that we could start our journal, after depositing a sum of ten thousand rupees. Ten thousand rupees!!? Our faces turned small. No doubt we were frustrated. Then it so happened that we bumped into Amadeus Prazeres Da Costa. Looking at our disgruntled selves he remarked,How is it that you chaps are looking so sour? Amadeus was also the editor/publisher of 'O Heraldo' - the Portuguese daily and he happened to be a good friend of Dattaram. When he learnt about our problem, he said, Why do you want to publish a new journal with a new name? Why don't you publish it under the banner of 'O Heraldo'? We already have sanction to publish in Konkani. You could make it a Sunday special supplement. Excited we straight away decided to start the Konkani supplement of O Heraldo. The entire responsibility of producing this supplement Vaman, Dattaram and I decided we should take on ourselves. And it started. After about 7 or 8 issues Vaman remarked, :Look here - this publication helps to satisfy our lust to be seen in print. Should we not be inviting aspiring Konkani writers to display their talents in this journal? I said,Let's have a short story competition. Then we can publish the best stories we receive. That should unearth new writers. We announced a competition. We expected a huge number of entries. Listen to this joke: we got just one, yes, just one entry. Sad. Just one person, a youngster from Cansaulim named Chandrakant Keni had very sweetly had sent in an entry even as our periodical faced closure... -- Augusto Pinto 40, Novo Portugal, Moira, Bardez, Goa, India E pinto...@gmail.com or ypinto...@yahoo.co.in P 0832-2470336 M 9881126350 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. [Goanet] Gyanpeeth award winner Ravindra Kelekar no more: Goa loses its soul
Posting with Samir's permission. George --- On Fri, 8/27/10, Samir Kelekar samir_kele...@yahoo.com wrote: I am first a fighter; that is why I became a writer Ravindra Kelekar, who happens to be my uncle used to say. He passed away at 85 today at 11.30 AM in Goa. Ravindrakaka was more of a Lohiate than a Nehruvian. At age 21, he decided to dedicate his life to konkani, Goa and the nation and did so till his last moment. He was decorated with Padma Bhushan, and was a fellow of the Sahitya Academy besides winning the Gyanpeeth. Always frank and straightforward, someone who never minced any words, political correctness was not in his vocabulary itself. But he did'nt hate anyone. He told me in one conversation --- don't blame the Portuguese who ruled Goa for over 450 years, even they had a dictator ruling them, so their citizens' position was no different from ours. As his nephew (Ravindrabab was my father's second cousin) I was in awe of this man. In his last speech accepting the Gyanpeeth award for which he was taken in an ambulance on a wheel chair, he made a fervent appeal to people to write in Indian languages saying that English has only given us 'bonsai' intellectuals. Bonsai' plants are short and cant reproduce. Most loved by Goans, Ravindrabab's influence made many of my uncles, and father also plunge into the freedom movement. Indeed, the Kelekar family today is associated with social work in Goa and Ravindrabab was the tallest of them all. He fought for the Konkani language when Konkani wasn't even recognized as a language and people were ashamed to speak it. From one and two people, today Konkani is an official language of Goa, and is in the eighth schedule of the Indian constitution. [Goanet] Konkan Railway - A dream derailed!
The Editor “Herald” Panjim Sir, After reading the latest article “ A Dream Derailed” H. 24 Aug by Anthony J. Simoes about the status of Konkan Railway and also earlier news about robberies during Festive Season during the nights as well as during the days and also news about recent and past robberies at the Holy Temples and also the other news about landslides on the KR tracks and of collapsed tunnels every year during monsoons, besides the exodus of migrants that carried among them thieves, beggars, anti-socials, criminals, wanted and unwanted lot, it reminds me of an MLA who said years back in the State Assembly that KONKAN RAILWAY IS A CURSE ON GOANS. However, he was not spared by the then MGP Party members and other stalwarts from North Goa is another matter. Although the above mentioned article did not carry many more other problems being caused till date due to KR project it is really an eye opener to us. The loss that in fact caused to maintain this unviable project is huge and enormous, besides the countless loss caused to people while laying the tracks through their fertile lands perhaps will never ever be able to recover. What else could one say of this Konkan Railway if not a CURSE ON GOAN PEOPLE? Indeed the KR dream has become a nightmare and National Project is now a National disaster. Thanks. [Goanet] COLUMN: Dr. Oscar Rebello! Goa needs you
Yet another casualty in our quest to rid ourselves of Corrupt and greedy politicians. Dr Oscar Rebello seems to be a victim of our usual sinister attitude as Goans to pull other Goans down just for the sake of it. This is why we Goans cannot compete with others who instead of pulling their people down, encourage them to even higher achievement by supporting them to the fullest. May I appeal to Dr Oscar to reconsider his resignation and take up the challenge. You have our complete support. We are behind you and we will be there to support you in your quest to make Goa a place which every Goan can be proud to call his motherland a place for Goans with a Government of Goans and of Goans. A true democracy in an India which boasts of it but in true fact, have ceded their rights to corrupt politicians who buy and sell them down the river for twelve pieces of silver. Regards...
