Re: [Goanet] Of red flags and football stadiums
George Pinto’s posts on this thread brings to the fore the two types of people we have in Goa. Initially we used to have three, but with the advent of free education we have just the two types: the literate and the educated. Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.
Re: [Goanet] Of red flags and football stadiums
Football (and sports) stadia are one thing... Now, local politicians have got the idea that they can build shopping complexes and call them sporting facilities. See the example of Duler. This trend has started for some time now, which explains why our rulers have got interested in sports. FN On 28 August 2011 00:40, George Pinto georgejpi...@yahoo.com wrote: I thought Sandeep supported a football stadium in Campal but reading his response below I have my doubts of his approach. Not only his anti-aam admi tone in trying to promote the stadium, but the red flags in his email makes one (justifiably) more skeptical and cynical.

[Goanet] Mystery shrouds death of Goan chef visiting Dubai
Mystery shrouds death of Goan chef visiting Dubai Indian visiting Dubai to attend culinary training course found dead near Zabeel Park; family suspects foul play Xpress reportPublished: 00:00 August 25, 2011 Dubai: Mystery shrouds the death of a 40-year-old Indian chef whose body was found near Zabeel Park two days after he went missing on his first visit to Dubai. Pio Cardoza, a chef with a restaurant at a mall in Mobor, Cavellossim in the Indian state of Goa, was sent to Dubai by his employers for a training course in Japanese cuisine on August 9. He was put up at a staff accommodation of the mall's branch in Jumeirah 3. On August 12, Cardoza stepped out of the Jumeirah mall to buy cigarettes from a nearby grocery. He never came back. That was the last he was seen. We thought he had gone to visit his brother-in-law who lives in Dubai. But when we didn't hear from him for two days, we got worried and contacted the police, his colleague told XPRESS on condition of anonymity. Cardoza's body was found near Zabeel Park on August 14. According to his colleague the autopsy said he died of heart failure caused by respiratory problems. But the family suspects foul play. Cardoza called his wife on August 11. He sounded frightened. Surely there's something more to this than meets the eye, Cardoza's brother-in-law Joseph told XPRESS over the phone from Goa on Wednesday evening. It's still a mystery what he was doing near the park, he said. Bad dream Eerily, Cardoza's wife Sunita had a premonition that her husband was in trouble in Dubai. My sister dreamt Cardoza was imprisoned in a warehouse and was crying out for help. She got so worried that she called Cardoza's colleagues in Dubai to check on him, said Joseph. Cardoza's colleague confirmed receiving the call. Yes, she did call me. We had still not found Cardoza, but we assured her that he would be all right. How would we know about the tragic turn of events? On August 12, Sunita filed a missing person complaint at Goa's Colva Police Station. She filed an application with us saying Cardoza was missing. But since the case does not come under our jurisdiction, we forwarded the application to the Crime Branch (in India), an official at the Colva Police Station in South Goa told XPRESS. Not happy with the cold response from Goa police, Sunita contacted her brother Joaquim Fernandes who works in the Sharjah Free Zone. On August 15, Fernandes lodged a missing person complaint with Dubai Police. The following day he was asked to come to the morgue and identify a body. It was Cardoza's. A statement from the Indian Consulate in Dubai said, The Consulate was approached for the repatriation of the mortal remains of Pio Cardozo and completion of death-related formalities. The Consulate is extending all possible assistance in the matter. Cardoza's body will be sent to India on Friday evening. Cardoza is survived by his mother, wife, two daughters, 13 and 11, and a son, 7. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/crime/mystery-shrouds-death-of-goan-chef-visiting-dubai-1.856916 Via Sylvia Coutinho [qatar-goans] Read all Goanet messages at: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/

Re: [Goanet] Of closed minds, and bare intellects, and empty souls
- On Mon, 8/22/11, Gabe Menezes gabe.mene...@gmail.com wrote: RESPONSE: .. When we bow so lowly, we have lost it all and more. Your comments/response would be appreciated, am holding my breath! Dear Gabe I apologize for this late reply. Regarding the original subject How many Goans in your city/country, I must confess the question does not interest me in terms of how many. Whether there are 4,000 or 40,000 UK Goans is irrelevant. What does interest me is an uncompromising indentity census. How many Goans are engaged with Goa in some way to be called Goan? Here too I am more concerned with the emotional investment with Goa, not whether someone physically resides there or claims Goan ancestry (those parameters are for cats and dogs, humans are more complex). The usual census/idenity topics bore me, more so when they are considered in relation to pre-1961, post-1961, Catholic Goans, Hindu Goans, UK Goans, Indian Goans, etc. We Goans have an insecure habit of defining ourselves in relationship to the other (Indian, Portuguese, East-African, Canadian, Australian, etc.). We cannot stand alone. We are not simply afraid to stand alone but any number of invasions, migrations to the West have convinced us of being second-class, a doormat mentality and it shows up often enough. To compensate some say we are special - a fanatasy by any objective account. An honest look in the mirror shows we are at society's fringes, a failed people with few individual successes. Sure we have had CEO's of major international companies and other achievements in various fields but their success is an individual succees, not a shared Goan success. Victor Menezes is a Goan, Citibank is not Goan. Closed minds - Most Goans cannot step outside their narrow religious views and engage the entire Goan community, we still have fractured, communal divides which for one reason or another continue to plague us. But that is not enough, we cannot think big, think of the larger community, participate in worthy endeavours and fight the fight the good fight. In effect, we have reduced ourselves (and no one else to blame) to a parochial, miserable people. Bare intellects - To look at Goan society is to encounter failure. What grand ideas, statespersons have we produced lately? Instead, a patriarchal society (e.g. 39 of 40 Goans MLAs are men) reflect the smallest we have to offer. We are bottom-feeding on the political front and on most fronts. We encourage a dependency state in Goa (every solution is in terms of what the government will do for us), and in the process we have done nothing. With corruption in every pore, we are actually evolving in reverse. But we frequently sing, dance, and picnic, something chimpanzees can do with a little training. Empty souls - But our biggest tragedy is we are adrift to nowhere, weighed down by petty, mean-spirits (how many magnanimous Goans have you met?). To say we are self-centered and a selfish lot is merely to avoid saying much worse. The mirror does not lie. Where is our humanity? - today 14,000 humans died of malnutrition. Any number suffer illiteracy and poverty. But our chimpanzees sang, danced and picnicked. Oh, and they also got on their high-horse and picked a new fight with their neighbor and sabotaged progress across the other fence while not lifting a finger to help a world in desperate need. And what about our children? A confused lot in a challenging world. The best we can say about Goans if took a census is that unlike the Emperor with no clothes, we have our underwear on, but that is only out of modesty. It is not saying much about Goans but why not tell the truth. I know some will protest the above - notice they don't even have their underwear on. I could continue, but you get the idea. George
[Goanet] Westend Seniors Club (Toronto) - Celebrate World Goa Day
Global Goemkars !! COURTESY - GOAN VOICE CANADA Photographs : http://www.goanvoice.ca/ Westend Seniors Club (Toronto) Celebrate World Goa Day By Lenny Lopes There seems to be no end in sight for the Toronto Westend Seniors with yet another successful event! This time the event was to celebrate WORLD GOA DAY on Friday, August 12, 2011. The beautifully decorated hall with pictures and posters of Goa and India, including a beautifully modelled ship made of cardboard by “Fisherman Lenny”, coconut trees swaying from the walls and paper boats surfing on each table; were all groomed for the eventful evening and created a true atmosphere of our ancestral roots. The event in the guise of Konkani songs by a group of Seniors and a couple of dance performances namely an Indian traditional dance soloed by Katy Mulla, and the “Bongo Masala” Dancers consisting of six youthful teenage boys and girls with their Bollywood dance, who all showed their talents and hopped, jumped and wiggled, enthralling the audience who thoroughly enjoyed the shows. Another notable observation worth mentioning was the traditional costumes and superb acting by many Seniors. Outstanding was Dolly Braganza as a Goan Widower with a rosary and prayer book. And so was Fred Carvalho who, as a Toddy Tapper, satisfied some of the Seniors’ pallets with his free taste of Goan Feni, leaving an aroma of Goa in the air! Concluding the event was a typical Goan meal of Sorpatel and Pulao, leaving yet another wonderful memory of Goan nostalgia. The very enthusiastic Social Committee together with their many helpers, expended their untiring efforts to make the event a memorial and extremely successful one. Here is what the Spiritans had to write about him:- SHANNON, Fr Thomas 1913-1984 Born 31 May 1913 in the Falls Rd., Belfast, Tommy studied at Blackrock, 1928-34, and was professed at Kilshane in 1935. He did Philosophy at the Castle, Blackrock, and prefected with the Burse, 1937-8. Ordained in 1941 Fr Tommy went to East Africa in 1943. While working on the island of Zanzibar he took a special interest in the Goan people and, because of his work among them, he could be termed their apostle. He was transferred in 1946 to St Peter Claver's Mission, Nairobi, and with Goan help he built a fine large church and two fine schools in the then outstation of Eastleigh. Having developed Eastleigh as a parish he was called on later to replace Bishop Butler as pastor of Parklands parish. Then, after a successful fund-raising tour of the USA on behalf of Archbishop J.J.McCarthy, he was appointed to the Cathedral parish in Nairobi. He returned to Ireland in 1968 as his health gave cause for concern. He worked for some time as chaplain to St John of God Hospital, Stillorgan, as curate in Clogher Rd., Dublin, and later in a Belfast parish. He was appointed chaplain to Cappagh Hospital in 1972 where for 12 years he rendered faithful and cheerful service in spite of failing health. Fr Tommy was seen to be a man of prayer and was remarkably even tempered. Prudent and wise he planned with foresight. He was an understanding and helpful confrere, and his leadership was manifest in his capacity to rally and encourage people. [Goanet] Cardinal Oswald Gracias calls for Anna to end hunger strike
Cardinal Oswald Gracias calls for Anna to end hunger strike August 27, 2011 Anna Hazare’s 11-day public fast that has drawn thousands of supporters across the country, to call for stronger anti-corruption legislation. The government has suffered several corruption-related scandals in recent months, and the economy has long been hampered by endemic graft. The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, the Archbishop of Bombay Cardinal Oswald Gracias, says that although the bishops support the fight against corruption, they want Mr. Hazare to end his hunger strike. “I’m appealing, and the Church has appealed, to Anna Hazare to call of his hunger strike, because we know that only God is the giver of life; only God can take away life,” Cardinal Gracias told Vatican Radio. He also said Hazare has accomplished his main goal. “I mentioned to Anna Hazare that you have succeeded in bringing corruption to centre stage, and making everybody realize, and also the government, that this matter has to be addressed urgently and seriously…but we also have the constitution to follow,” he said. “Within these parameters we should work out a solution,” the Cardinal continued. “I have appealed to all parties –to the government, to Anna Hazare, and to civil society – to be flexible and to work to a solution that will be for the good of the people.” http://thecsf.org/csf/2011/08/27/cardinal-oswald-gracias-calls-for-anna-to-end-hunger-strike-constitutional-resolution-to-bill/

[Goanet] Oheraldo editorial on India is born again
The editorial in today's Oheraldo is nondescript. I don't think Anna Hazare has given the idea of India a whole new meaning but instead he has created a new awareness of what the united might of people can achieve in forcing the hand of the government. It would have been wise on the editorialist's part if he/she had read Sunil Khilani's book, Idea of India. It is rather unfortunate that such editorialists lack the ability to analyze a situation. The idea of India is intact, though fissures may appear now and then. The body politic maybe be maimed but it is still a living organism. India is not born again but, in fact, revitalized. The synergy generated during Anna's fast should be sustained for Indian democracy to move forward in a meaningful way. Hazare's movement is an eye-opener to the elected representatives that there comes a time in history when enough is enough. One of the signboards at the rally was Enough is enough. Bringing Parliament to its knees is a lesson of democracy that won't be easily forgotten. I don't agree with the editorial that cynicism holds India back. Courruption does, and the Anna Hazare fast was to highlight this malaise. That Indian are cynical or even fatalist is a given. The editorial is inconsistent with spellings and also had some grammartical errors. Anna Hazares victory, missing is the apostrophe. In one place Jan Lokpal Bill and elsewhere Lok Pal, and then Lokayukta as one word and later split as Lok Ayukta. Instead of Standing Committees it has been written as Standing Committee's. Same line, t is missing from the and continued with not be forgotten on anybody of the law makers. Who is this anybody of the lawmakers? More confusion follows, India has realized not just the strength of Anna Hazare but the strength of India. Anna Hazare has been the lightning rod to bring most of India together in a fight for a better India, free of corruption and nepotism. India did not discover its own strength by sheer chance. It needed a man of Hazare's integrity and repute to galvanize a nation used to its chalta hai attitude. India's democracy has always been strong but it has been undermined by different negative forces, mainly communalism and political chauvinism. The people's will has been subjugated by the political class. It's happening in your own backyard. The fight by different NGOs in Goa has not made any significant impact on the Goa's ruling class. Now that the Goa government has promised to install an office of Lokayukta, it would remain to be seen what changes comes on Goa's political landscape. Anna Hazare's fight has given Indian democracy a sharp edge. let's wait and see how the fight prolongs and what results it brings in the end. Eugene Correia
[Goanet] MAYEM YET TO BE LIBERATED
-- Samir Umarye *HISTORY* The State may be celebrating 50 years of liberation, but residents of Mayem are yet to get freedom from the Portuguese rule. Mayem, a village in Bicholim taluka and about 30 kms from Panjim, is still a victim of the Portuguese rule as people residing there are controlled by the Custodian Act. The village has been declared as ‘Evacuee Property’, on grounds that it is owned by a Portuguese who fled from Goa and settled in Portugal after Goa’s liberation. The controversy surrounding the ‘Evacuee Property’ begins in 1816, when the colonial rulers confiscated virtually the entire village admeasuring 3,773 hectares from the Mayem Communidade. The land was then handed over to Diogo da Costa Ataide Teive with a decree to look after it for three generations. The third generation died in 1929, but the land was not returned to the Portuguese government. “The lease ended in 1929 when the third generation expired with the death of Jose Jaoquim de Noronha,” informed Mayem Bhuvimmochan Samiti President Kashinath Mayekar. Based on the last will of Jose Joaquim de Noronha, the property was handed over to Dom Eurico Wolfango de Silva. “The will was conditional. The conditions imposed by the will by virtue of which Dom Eurico de Wolfango de Silva was bound to permanently reside in Mayem,” said Mayekar. “De Silva was also bound work towards improvement of the village and was prohibited from transferring or mortgaging in any manner any part of the property allotted to him by the virtue of the will,” added Mayekar. It is said that in 1959, Dom Eurico abandoned Mayem and started residing in Porvorim (Serula). Immediately after Goa’s liberation, he left for Portugal before handing over the property to his wife, Ricardina da Silva. At present, Ricardina’s nephew, Anton Pereira, claims to be the legal heir of the property. In 1960-61, there was widespread agitation against the landowners in Goa, including Mayem. In 1962-63, a petition signed by many Mundkars was forwarded to the Government of India, Delhi, reporting that all landowners of Mayem had abandoned their estate and had fled to Portugal. They had requested the government to take charge of the abandoned properties. The matter was referred by the Central government to the Goa administration. The newly formed government seized the entire property of Mayem and Mayem Evacuee Property and proceeded to enact the Goa Daman, and Diu Evacuee Property Administration Act 6 of 1964. Since then, people from Mayem have no rights to the land and are confined to the Custodian Act. *HARDSHIPS FACED BY THE PEOPLE* Datta Narayan Lamgaonkar (81) from Bhavkai-Mayem, who lives on the custodian land in Mayem, has every reason to be a troubled man at a ripe age. He has a big family of seven members. While one daughter is yet to be married, three sons are unemployed. Besides, there are several cases against him in the court for extending his house without the permission of the custodian. “Being here in Mayem, we are unable to get basic facilities and cannot even extend or repair our houses,” rues Datta. “If we undertake even a minor activity, we get a notice from the custodian and despite residing here for generations, we are still slaves,” Lamgaonkar said. Despite suffering from asthma for some time, Datta has been fighting cases against him since the last 15 years in connection with the illegal house he built on custodian land. “I have spent huge amounts of money to fight the case. With that money, I could easily have constructed a terraced house. Many a times, I have felt like running away from this village, but there is no other option and neither the government is listening to our demands,” he said. Commenting on the situation in the village, Datta says: “There are several problems in the village. I have no toilet facility nor can I construct a shed in front of my house as I will soon get a notice if anything is done,” added Datta. Shankar Hadfadkar, another aged person from the village, expressed similar opinion. “If someone wants electricity or water connection, then they cannot easily get it from the custodian,” said Hadfadkar. Similar is the case with Narsiha S Chodankar, who claims that it is very difficult to live in Mayem, due to the problem of the custodian property. “We have not come from some foreign countries, but are staying here since generations and despite all this, the government is not bothered about us,” lamented Chodankar (65). “The chief minister says that he is all for the common people. Do we not fall under his criteria of common people? For how many years should we suffer on our own land,” asks Chodankar. *GOVERNMENT’S SILENCE* The Mayem Evacuee Property issue has invariably been a major election issue for all politicians in the area, but not a single government in the past five decades has resolved the matter. Despite various promises from politicians, the issue is still pending and villagers cannot
[Goanet] India celebrates people's victory as activist ends fast
India celebrates people's victory as activist ends fast By Annie Banerji NEW DELHI | Sun Aug 28, 2011 2:35am EDT (Reuters) - Sipping coconut water and honey, a self-styled Gandhian anti-corruption reformer ended a 13-day hunger strike on Sunday that had sparked India's biggest protests in decades, besieged the government and ushered in a new middle class political force. It's a proud moment for the country that a mass movement which was carried out for 13 days was peaceful and non-violent, Anna Hazare in a crisp white kurta smock and cap told thousands of cheering supporters from a stage at an open ground in New Delhi that has become the epicenter of a nationwide crusade. The people's parliament is bigger that Delhi's parliament. After initially arresting Hazare and dismissing him as an anarchist, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government caved in to the demands of the 74-year-old veteran activist as parliament backed anti-graft legislation that met many of his demands. Hazare has tapped a groundswell of public anger against endemic corruption, uniting the country's bulging middle-class against a hapless political class and underlining voter anger at Singh and the ruling Congress party. Anna wins it for the people, splashed the front page of India's Sunday Times newspaper, as supporters flocked to Hazare's fast site to revel in victory after parliament gave its support to many of the activist's demands late on Saturday. Tens of thousands of mostly urban and wired voters across India celebrated the achievement of an unprecedented movement that may usher in a new force in Indian politics and damage the ruling Congress party in crucial state elections next year. The veteran activist, whose health has seriously deteriorated, said that he would break his fast after a special session of parliament saw lawmakers backing a resolution by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to push for a law to create an independent ombudsman with wide-ranging power to investigate lawmakers, the judiciary and bureaucrats. Undermined by graft scandals and seen as out-of-touch with voters battling high inflation, Congress' failure to deal with Hazare's campaign before it flared up into a national issue spells danger for the ruling party in state polls next year ahead of the 2014 general election. While protests in India are not uncommon, the sight of many well-off young professionals using Twitter and Facebook taking to the streets of Asia's third-largest economy suggest an awakening of a previously politically-ambivalent middle-class. NATIONWIDE SUPPORT Supporters surged to Hazare's protest site in a sea of saffron, white and green from nearby metro stations on Sunday, as smiling protesters with the national flag painted on their faces chanted long live Anna and victory to mother India. It is a historic day, said Aamir Pratap, 37, who brought his wife and three sons to the site in central New Delhi. Anna and the whole country succeeded in uniting the parliament yesterday for such a crucial bill. Mukherjee announced parliament's support for Hazare's demands after over nine hours of fervent debate in both chambers of parliament that highlighted just how much the activist's campaign had rocked India's political establishment. Hazare's trademark white cap has been sported by thousands of protesters across the country, and the slogan I am Anna has become a rallying cry for a generation of young people disillusioned by their graft-stained politicians. It is a victory for Anna but as he was fighting for the people, this is a victory for the people, Santosh Hegde, former solicitor general and Hazare aide told CNN-IBN. The activist, who lost over 7.5 kgs (16.5 lbs) during his almost fortnight-long hunger strike, will go straight to a hospital outside India's capital after breaking his fast. Hazare is not some out-of-the-blue phenomenon, however. Deep-seated change has been underway for years in India as its once-statist economy globalizes, bolstered by a widely used freedom of information act, aggressive private media and the election of state politicians who have rejected traditional caste-support bases to win on governance issues. After a botched arrest as part of a hardline approach to Hazare, a government U-turn saw ministers praise the activist, suggesting a leadership deficit in Congress without party head Sonia Gandhi, who is recovering after surgery for an undisclosed condition. Congress pledged a slew of economic reforms after winning re-election in 2009 that would have made foreign investment easier and tax collection more effective. But graft and anger over inflation has stymied attempts to debate the legislation. Transparency International rates India in 87th place on the most corrupt countries, according to a 2010 survey. Several scandals linked to the government, including a bribery scam involving the granting of telecom licenses that led to the arrest of

[Goanet] The men and the woman behind Team Anna
The men and the woman behind Team Anna IANS | Aug 28, 2011, 12.37PM IST NEW DELHI: Anna Hazare has become a powerful brand for people-driven change. But a brand is not built in isolation. It took, amongst others, the father-son due of a former law minister and an activist lawyer, a former police officer and an income tax officer-turned RTI activist to power the 24x7 Anna Hazare show that fired the nation's imagination like no other. These five people were part of his 'inner circle' of advisers: 1) Arvind Kejriwal: Hazare's right-hand man, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur, was additional commissioner of Income Tax, Delhi, at the young age of 27 before he turned against the establishment. Founder of Parivartan, a Delhi-based NGO pushing for transparent governance, the 43-year-old's tireless crusade educating people about the Right to Information Act won him the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emerging Leadership in 2006. 2) Shanti Bhushan: One of the two legal brains behind Anna Hazare's Jan Lokpal campaign, 86-year-old Shanti Bhushan has been in the news for advocating reforms of higher judiciary. He, along with his son Prashant Bhushan, set up Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Judicial Reform (CJAR). As law minister in the Morarji Desai government, he introduced the Lokpal bill in parliament in 1977. He was also co-chairman of the joint committee set in April 2011 for the Jan Lokpal Bill and played a key role in brokering a compromise that led to the parliament agreeing in principle to Hazare's key demands. 3) Prashant Bhushan: Better known for filing public interest litigation (PIL), taking up diverse issues from environmental violations to corruption, the bespectacled lawyer was in the small team that co-drafted the Jan Lokpal bill. Bhushan, 57, shot into the limelight for a PIL filed by him that led to unearthing of the multi-million dollar scandal in the allocation of 2G telecom spectrum. He has been a key confidant of Hazare and part of his negotiating team with the government. 4) Kiran Bedi: India's first female police officer, Bedi hit the headlines in the early 1980s when she got prime minister Indira Gandhi's car towed away for a parking violation. Known as a no-nonsense officer who instilled both fear and discipline in her men, she undertook sweeping reforms in New Delhi's Tihar Jail and is part of the trio, along with Prashant Bhushan and Kejriwal, who have been negotiating with the government over the Lokpal bill. She drew adverse attention by her theatrics on the Ramlila stage and was criticised for mocking MPs and the way they made fool of those who elected them. 5) Medha Patkar: The woman who led the Narmada Bachao Andolan, espousing the rights of those displaced by the construction of the Narmada and other large dams. In 1991, she undertook a three-week fast against the Sardar Sarovar dam that brought her almost close to death. That year, she won the Right Livelihood Award along with Baba Amte. Patkar was a late entrant to the Anna cause. A postgraduate in social work from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Patkar has been an outspoken and hardline member of the movement. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/The-men-and-the-woman-behind-Team-Anna/articleshow/9767845.cms ~Avelino

There is today wide-spread support for the stadium reconstruction, which includes support from our Elected representatives, Sports Clubs, other local bodies, Schools and Colleges, and a vast majority of the locals. Extensive discussions have been held and a broad consensus about the number of matches that can be held here, the capacity of the stadium, etc have been worked out. The CM, the Opposition leader cum Panaji MLA, the City Mayor, the local Councillors and almost all stake holders have given their nod for the project. Barring the few opposing voices which is expected on any given issue, a majority of the Campal/ Miramar and other Panjim city residents have thrown their weight behind the stadium reconstruction. So the overwhelming Public sentiment is in favour of the stadium reconstruction, not against it. Considering the above, it is George who must do a rethink on this. He must be sympathetic to the cause that others hold dearly. Sports persons are a neglected lot. A ground which was once the pride of our city lies in ruins today. The locals do not have a ground to play on. Schools and colleges do not have a ground where they can play or conduct their games on. We have not made demands for a huge ground. [Goanet] India is born again - Herald Editorial
India is born again ANNA HAZARE. For a generation used to a distant idea of Mahatma Gandhi, Google inspired images of Sardar Patel, Subash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh and IPod feeds of India’s freedom movement, Anna Hazare has given not just freedom, but the idea of India a whole new meaning. Anna Hazare has made a child of ten to a middle aged Indian of fifty believe in an old fashioned committed idea of India where passion for the country resulted in great deeds and deliverance. Anna Hazare has made this passion worth it. He, in a span of twelve days cut through the most incisive force that was holding the new India back. Cynicism. Anna Hazare, his principles and his grit has made two kinds of India join hands. The India of a bank clerk and the India of a NRI banker. The India of a retired school teacher and the Indian of an Ivy League professor. The India of the tiller of the land to the India of a Silicon Valley programmer. That has been Anna Hazares victory. The immediate issue of the government finally giving in and agreeing to the three contentious issues which Team Anna included in its Jan Lokpal Bill and treated them an non negotiable, was important. The ramifications of these three issues will make India’s anti corruption base much stronger. A citizen’s charter will basically mean that every time you go to a government office for a grievance reddressal, a babu will not ask you to come back next week. The babus response will no longer be mood or power driven but system driven. You will know how long it will take for each complaint to be addressed. Secondly, the inclusion of the lower bureaucracy is a huge step since most of common India does not deal with deputy Secretary level officers in their day to day work. The common man works with a tehsildar and a BDO and the lower level police officer. It is this level which must become accountable to the people of India. Thirdly, the institution of the Lokayukta at the state level will allow people in the rest of the country a Lok Pal equivalent in the Lok Ayukta with much more teeth. This will obviously not happen soon since the resolution by parliament will be discussed and studied by the standing committee. But unlike the Standing Committee’s of old, this standing committee will be well aware of the circumstances which has brought the Jan Lokpal bill from the drawing board and the drawing rooms of civil society to the halls of parliament. The rigors of this journey will not be forgotten on anybody of law makers. India has realised not just the strength of Anna Hazare but the strength of India. The earlier belief that the government will not be challenged by its people has gone for good. If Parliament is the final bastion for making laws, then the people of India have told parliament that it gets its supremacy from the people it represents. In all these years, this was only a notion. Anna Hazare has made this into a reality. Truly, today is historic. It is a birth of a new India. An India of real hope and of real strength. Anna Hazares movement has given India a democracy it always deserved but never quite had. Source: http://www.heraldgoa.in/newscategory/Edit/15

[Goanet] Violence On The Streets Of Miramar
Violence On The Streets Of Miramar The news about the violence on the streets of Miramar spread like wild fire and as I went through the news, I felt that if choppers and knives were replaced with blazing guns, this act would have been a straight from the famous Mario Puzo best seller, The Godfather, by the Mafiso's on the streets of Sicily, a film directed by none other than the Oscar winning Francis F Coppola. Goans all over are shocked at such violence within the parameters and precincts of the Capital city, which houses the GHQ of the Goa Police. It looks like criminals have neither fear nor respect for the HQ of the law enforcement agency of Goa and it is indeed worrying to note that even though a police van was in the vicinity of the crime scene, the mafia type gang war still erupted in broad day light and on the main road of the posh locality and in this barbaric attack, an innocent bystander was stabbed and is now fighting for her life. Would criminals dare commit this barbaric crime in such close proximity of a police station and more so the Police HQ, if our police were honest, efficient and duty bound ? Any where in the world, criminals would think hundred times before committing a crime in such a close proximity of a police station and more so of the police GHQ. It is very much evident that our system of governance has rendered the Goa Police ineffective and impotent, willingly or unwillingly, or else, how can we explain that our Goa Police are now saluting and protecting the very same person that had attacked the GHQ in broad daylight and few years ago ? In Goa the nexus between criminals, police and the politicians is common knowledge, the political clout and money power of the crooked and corrupt politicians shelters criminals and feeds the police and those that are good enough to refuse handouts become victims of the transfer transgressions in God forsaken places. The hired goons of politicians act as tools to clamp down non-cooperating and non-submitting individuals or parties, especially during elections and in return get protection from anything and everything including murder. Even in this present case it's in the news that a present minister in the Kamat cabinet, went to the hospital to see the criminal who was attacked by a rival gang but unfortunately did not think it prudent to ask about the welfare of the innocent girl with a punctured lung fighting for her life, a victim of collateral damage. Every minister in Goa has his own band of renegades who follow their orders without any questions, faithful dogs ready to pounce even on unsuspecting and peace loving victims. Sometimes it is the members of the security service that carry on atrocities against innocent and peaceful protesters on the behest of miners and politicians. The number of custodial deaths has shown the apathy of our Police for the Rule of Law and justice. Deaths due to criminal negligence are ignored, murder files closed as natural deaths and rapes swept under the carpets. In Goa if you have the money and the hand of a politician over you, you can get away with anything and everything and the apathy of our Police and politicians has overwhelmingly led to the pathetic state of affairs in Goa. We Goans today are not secure in our own streets and in our own homes and this is only because we Goans have sold our self respect and our dignity to the highest bidder and elected the same corrupt and conniving politicians to carry their relentless assault on Goa and Goans, unabated. I only hope and pray that the prevailing mayhem in Goa will make every Goan sit up and take account of our actions and realize our folly, take corrective actions and elect good people who will work for the wellbeing of Goa and Goans and get rid of people who support crime and criminals for their own personal wellbeing. [Goanet] Anna Hazare: A fasting activist turns a national icon
Anna Hazare: A fasting activist turns a national icon 28 AUG, 2011, 12.39PM IST, IANS NEW DELHI: He drove a truck for the army during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, but when Anna Hazare broke his fast on day 13 Sunday after the Indian parliament agreed to his three demands for a stronger anti-graft legislation the school dropout had won for the people a war against the powerful establishment. It was a civic-government standoff, broadcast live to the nation by the incessantly chattering 24x7 TV news channels, and at the centre of this spectacular reality show was a frail and fasting 74-year-old man who became a veritable nightmare for the ruling political class, but a hero of the urban middle class reeling under pervasive corruption and an unresponsive system. Heroes are born in trying times, and in Hazare, who once sold flowers for a living, middle India has found an icon who echoed their growing disgust with scandal after scandal. Filmstar Aamir Khan spoke for many in India when he told Anna supporters amid singing and chanting that Anna is the real hero. Anna has inspired us all. He has acted as a symbol of public aspirations and a bridge between the old and the youth against the increasing corruption, says Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, 84-year-old major general, who took part in the Hazare movement. Hazare, who has deftly deployed Gandhian weapons of fasting to protest against corruption and injustice in his native village of Ralegan Siddhi and in Maharashtra where he has taken up diverse causes, came into the national spotlight in April when he fasted for five days for a strong Lokpal bill. It forced the government to form a 10-member panel to draft the legislation. Four months later, Hazare undertook another fast for the same cause when he saw that the government had not agreed to all their conditions and this time he captured the people's imagination - thanks to 24X7 TV coverage of his movement - like few have in the last few decades. He became a national icon when he was arrested Aug 16 before he began his fast and was put in Tihar jail and was released under mounting public pressure. After 12 days of fasting and sustained media attention, fed astutely by his SMS-wielding tech-savvy minders, Hazare may have got unprecedented national limelight now, but the diminutive activist, clad in the traditional white kurta-pyjama and a Gandhi cap, has been a quiet revolutionary back in his home state Maharashtra for decades. Much like Mahatma Gandhi, Anna Hazare -- born Kisan Baburao Hazare -- began his activist life in a humble way. His first target was his own village, Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district. It was a miserable and drought-prone place with insufficient rainfall and lacking any economic base. In 1975, he launched watershed development programmes and persuaded people to change their ways and managed to transform the barely breathing village to one Mahatma Gandhi would have been proud of. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics/nation/anna-hazare-a-fasting-activist-turns-a-national-icon/articleshow/9767887.cms ~Avelino

Civil society and the people have sought to engage the law-makers. Parliament, politicians and civil society rejected the simple, universal remedy. The middle class' involvement means change is round the corner. The rise of the youth brigade is now irreversible. Accountability is the key to electability. When one institution fails, another steps in. Our political parties are still irresponsible. Our intellectuals and media are simply too shallow and too politically aligned. It is not parliament that is supreme, but the people. ~Avelino

[Goanet] Bad news for Soter
If the Kangress government keeps its word, it will earn our admiration. Only time will tell but it looks as if Kangress has learnt some lessons from Annaji's agitation supported by millions up and down the country. This is what Salman Khurshid, who replaced the dodgy duo of Sibal and Chidambaram in the govt negotiations with Annaji, told TOI: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Civil-society-to-be-engaged-in-legislation-says-Salman-Khurshid/articleshow/9768479.cms This is obviously bad news for Soter who called this remarkably peaceful agitation as the agitation of the anarchists. It would be interesting to hear from him his definition of an anarchist. Anil Desai

Some readers might think that I was bowled a Googly and got stumped, yet some others might think that I was deliberately bowled a slow full toss, to be hit for a six! Nothing of the sort, I was waiting for information pertaining to the whole Convention before commenting. If by unqualified success we mean revenues earned then by all accounts this is correct. Rabi Martins is quoted in the Asian Age The Global Goans Convention ended with a Festival attended by nearly 6,000 people see http://epaper.asian-voice.com/PUBLICATIONS/AV/AV/2011/07/30/ArticleHtmls/Goa-comes-to-London-30072011014007.shtml?Mode=1# Rabi Martins was part and parcel of the 'pulse' of the success. So let me throw in some figures:- I shall err on the side of being conservative and take the attendees as 5,500 which @ £4 per head equates to £22,000. The parking, say 1,000 cars @ £5 each equates to £5,000. Then comes the fees generated by the stall holders and the Sponsorship by Tilda Rice, let's say a total of £5,000. This makes a fine grand total of £32,000. The numbers being bandied about how much was paid by the Govt. of Goa, are from the sublime to the ridiculous, so a fair guesstimate, since this was a showcase event, would be £10,000. So by income, no doubt this was a resounding success - now all that remains to be seen are the actual figures. -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.
[Goanet] Registrar`s cautioned
Warning to the registrar`s It is an open secrete about the obnoxious, disgusting happenings at this Govt. facility. They are supposed to keep the records of death, marriage and birth in safe custody with a master copy. Even recent certificates are not available. There is no control on the clerks issuing the records at their own sweet time Even when the duplicate xerox copy is provided, it is not available after ten days and as promised. These endless visits are a nuisance and cause of corrupt practices The out put should be monitored by maintaining daily logs daily There should be provision for obtaining certificates in an emergency by paying extra amount It is not enough to display that years during which birth and death, marriage certificates are not available. The Govt which is at fault should be held accountable. When they cannot service the requests , why does the govt put limits of validity period. ? The process of reconstruction of lost records due to the carelessness of the Department, should be simple and quick For the catholics as i know the records maintained by the church are impeccable and not subject to nay manipuilations Registration of deeds of sales , documents of will, succession certificates, relinquishment , registration of marriagesetc are all at a price for discharging normal duties for , which they are paid salaries They are all used for expectations and gratifications as a matter of right The head has hardly any interest and time to monitor these services as a matter of his charge It may be interesting to find out the truth, that these postings at important talukas, where the land sale transactions are the highest are not by normal process of transfers. It is believed that the registrar`s are obliged to keep the higher ups in a jubilant mood by regularly, forcefully, siphoning off a part of the collection. Hence they are under hidden pressure to be dishonest The land tariffs are not fixed at every Taluka, towns and cities and therefore the discretion of the Registrar`s is indisputable and which means one has to take prior consent, as to the the price to be incorporated In case you choose to disagree, the process of submitting back to the collector for evaluation , estimation is cumbersome , time consuming . The clients are not patience and the lawyers stand to loose business, if they act smart. The Govt. does not want to fix the prices , because they will have to pay higher compensation on acquisitions There is a tentative list, but none refers or adheres to it The warnings are only for public consumption , when there is some expose. Re: [Goanet] Of red flags and football stadiums
Sandeep I am FOR a football stadium, the only issue is what size and where. I do know how Goans love football and youth in the Panjim area need a place to play. If it caters to the right section of the community, fine. But these grandiose glitz and glmaour ideas raise my suspicions, especially after the recent Caculo Mall fiasco for the locals. The bigger the stadium, the bigger the problems. And when the current political and big business class get involved (a la mining, mega-projects), it is ALL problems. Why don't you post a link (since Goanet does not permit attachments) to the stadium plan and the cyber-public can view the detailed proposal. George
[Goanet] A mole in Anna`s inner circle
Swami Agnivesh Govt Mole Agnivesh has breached the trust the Civil society reposed in him He has ac ted in a very treacherous manner betraying the trust of confidence reposed in him It is amounts to back stabbing and appears to be the mole of the Govt. The video displayed does not lie. He is questioning the Govt wisdom of extending unlimited concessions in his conversation with Kapil In his estimation Anna team is becoming desperate and acting mad, hungry and clamouring for more concession The conversation as played out on video is dubbed as concocted and untrue, that is the immediate response of Swami Agnivesh and which is not credible explanation The fact that the fast was allowed to be dragged to 13 days , indicates inside information to the Govt, that enabled them to be adamant and allowed the wounds to fester with gross disregard to well being of Anna. It was not the risk of Anna`s dangerously deteriorating health, but the unrelenting open confrontation by NDA to jettison the toothless Govt Lok Pal bill or face the vote. This would expose the Congress hypocrisy in fighting corruption and give a leverage to the NDA That Swami Agnivesh at this stage of popular uprising of unprecedented magnitude sold the spirit of the movement for thirty pieces of silver, like Judas Escariot It is shocking behaviour on the part of the spiritual guru, who was all this time been a part of the inner circle and enjoyed implicit trust of Anna, must have been constantly feeding the Govt. with vital inputs favourable for the inordinate delay of taking decision The govt was time and again vacillating, perhaps, on the issue with calculated risk on inside trading It is a shame and disgrace to the integrity and character of Agnivesh , which he will find it difficult to redeem to the public at large In stead of being pushed to the corner to offer and justify laboured explanations, it would be wise to offer apology for this aberration and voluntarily opt to dissociate directly with the movement hereafter Never mind the loss of so called one faithful follower, because now the opportunity is widened for numerous sincere and enlightened substitutes Sometimes people and individual loose their soul to the devil by temptations of temporary glory and recognition. The immediate reaction is one of disbelief, least unexpected in the circumstances. Nelson lopes Chinchinim 9850926276
[Goanet] Doctors and corruption
While our Anna Hazare is crusading against corruption one can spot many who want to be their photos taken along with this Ghandian. These photos appear in the first page of the press. Besides the holy men with long beards and safron robes, there also appear politicians. But twice we noticed some doctors, in one case three doctors poking their stethos, on another occasion another three with their stethoscopes handing and smilesthey wanted to show how concerned they were for this brave warrior Anna Hazare. Shame on you docs who are corrupt! Here is what you quacks and qualified alike do! This also goes about in the UK! There must be honest, God fearing doctors, ALL are not rascals. This article will help to be observant: HOW INDIAN DOCTORS LOOT PATIENTS: By Dr. B M Hegde. Most of these observations are either completely or partially true.Corruption has many names, and one of civil society isn't innocent either. Professionals and businessmen of various sorts indulge in unscrupulous practices. I recently had a chat with some doctors, surgeons and owners of nursing homes about the tricks of their trade. Here is what they said 1) 40-60% kickbacks for lab tests. When a doctor (whether family doctor / general physician, consultant or surgeon) prescribes tests - pathology, radiology, X-rays, MRIs etc. - the laboratory conducting those tests gives commissions. In South and Central Mumbai -- 40%. In the suburbs north of Bandra -- a whopping 60 per cent! He probably earns a lot more in this way than the consulting fees that you pay. 2) 30-40% for referring to consultants, specialists surgeons. When your friendly GP refers you to a specialist or surgeon, he gets 30-40%. 3) 30-40% of total hospital charges. If the GP or consultant recommends hospitalization, he will receive kickback from the private nursing home as a percentage of all charges including ICU, bed, nursing care, surgery. 4) Sink tests. Some tests prescribed by doctors are not needed. They are there to inflate bills and commissions. The pathology lab understands what is unnecessary. These are called sink tests; blood, urine, stool samples collected will be thrown. 5) Admitting the patient to /keep him under observation. /People go to cardiologists feeling unwell and anxious. Most of them aren't really having a heart attack, and cardiologists and family doctors are well aware of this. They admit such safe patients, put them on a saline drip with mild sedation, and send them home after 3-4 days after charging them a fat amount for ICU, bed charges, visiting doctors fees. 6) ICU minus intensive care. Nursing homes all over the suburbs are run by doctor couples or as one-man-shows. In such places, nurses and ward boys are 10th class drop-outs in ill-fitting uniforms and bare feet. These nurses sit at the reception counter, give injections and saline drips, perform ECGs, apply dressings and change bandages, and assist in the operation theatre. At night, they even sit outside the Intensive Care Units; there is no resident doctor. In case of a crisis, the doctor -- who usually lives in the same building -- will turn up after 20 minutes, after this nurse calls him. Such ICUs admit safe patients to fill up beds. Genuine patients who require emergency care are sent elsewhere to hospitals having a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) round-the-clock. 7) Unnecessary caesarean surgeries and hysterectomies. Many surgical procedures are done to keep the cash register ringing. Caesarean deliveries and hysterectomy (removal of uterus) are high on the list. While the woman with labour -pains is screaming and panicking, the obstetrician who gently suggests that caesarean is best seems like an angel sent by God! Menopausal women experience bodily changes that make them nervous and gullible. They can be frightened by words like and fibroids that are in almost every normal woman's radiology reports. When a gynaecologist gently suggests womb removal as a precaution, most women and their husbands agree without a second's thought. 8) Cosmetic surgery advertized through newspapers. Liposuction and plastic surgery are not minor procedures. Some are life-threateningly major. But advertisements make them appear as easy as facials and waxing. The Indian medical council has strict rules against such misrepresentation. But nobody is interested in taking action. 9) Indirect kickbacks from doctors to prestigious hospitals. To be on the panel of a prestigious hospital, there is give-and-take involved. The hospital expects the doctor to refer many patients for hospital admission. If he fails to send a certain number of patients, he is quietly dumped. And so he likes to admit patients even when there is no need. 10) Emergency surgery on dead body. If a surgeon hurriedly wheels your patient from the Intensive Care Unit to the operation theater, refuses to let you go inside and see him, and wants your

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 23rd Sunday of the Year
28-Aug-2011 Dear Friend, We often notice things that we disapprove of around us. We sometimes witness evil blatantly done and we don't raise a voice against it. Our justification: It's none of my business! Why should I be the person to take a stand against evil? Let others do the unpleasant job! Evil happens because good people don't speak out! Today, we are reminded that we are responsible for our brothers and sisters before God and human beings! Have a courageous weekend confronting evil with truth and love! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Twenty-third Sunday-Our obligation -Guarding the faith! 4-Sep-2011 Ezekiel 33: 7-9; Romans 13: 8-10; Matthew 18: 15-20; In today's first reading from the prophet Ezekiel, he reminds us that the Lord had called him to be a sentinel of the house of Israel. He has to watch every move of Israel and if they are going astray, or indulge in anything bad, he has to speak up and let them hear the voice of God. If he does not warn them he, Ezekiel, will be held guilty for the sins and offenses of the people. Every believer has an obligation to God for the people with whom he lives. All of us form one body and we will be held accountable for any action of the community that is not in keeping with God's law. We often shirk this responsibility. Won't you tell him so yourself? Wilhelminer Schroder, a famous actress and singer, was already past her prime. One day she was travelling from Hamburg to Frankfurt in a first-class carriage. The conversation turned on herself. A lady declared that Ms. Schroder's voice had much gone off, her future as a star was over. She had gone as podgy as a fatted goose. A gentleman besides her overhearing this criticism, suggested with a smile: You can say that to the singer herself because she happens to be sitting opposite to you. The lady paled and stammered a string of apologies. At last she came upon a saving excuse. My stupid remarks madam, she said to the actress, are certainly the fault of the journalist in the evening paper. One can never trust in his poisonous theatre reviews. A dreadful man that journalist! The actress replied sweetly: Won't you tell him so yourself? He is sitting right besides you. Pierre Lefevre -'One Hundred Stories to Change your Life' In the Gospel firstly, Jesus points out, If your brother or sister sins against you go and point out the error when you are alone with him or her. The primary purpose of correction is not fault finding but reconciliation, which is best done on a one-to-one basis and not as a public tribunal. Jesus is inviting us to find time to sort things out as soon as they happen or at least as soon as we find the opportunity. Jesus is not merely giving practical or psychological advice about how to get along with others, but is reminding us that the Christian life is a life lived with others and for others. The second step Jesus points out is to ask for the assistance of one or two witnesses so that things become more objective and we can see the other's point of view. When we gather in the name of Jesus, then we are not looking for strength in numbers or for winning approval but we are searching for what is the most just, right and loving thing to be done in the given circumstances. It is only in the case of stubbornness and a refusal to change and see what the witnesses point out that the third option comes into force: bringing it to the community, to the church. Hence, in a faith community with Jesus and in his name, we have to be responsible to and for one another. We have to constantly redress the wrongs done around us before it is too late. Confront to convert The gap between rich and poor widens at every level, not only in our own country but between ourselves and Third World countries. The E.U. accumulates Food Mountains and millions die of starvation, some even within the E.U. itself. Political institutions are unwilling or unable to redress the situation. Goodwill is strangled by the economic establishment. On many fronts, evil seems to thrive and indeed to have the upper hand. Violence is on the increase. Financial self-protection is the pervasive culture. Self-righteousness is fashionable. Where wrong is condemned, few convince the wrongdoer of the evil of his ways or enable him to make a new beginning. Being the easier option, condemnation has replaced conversion. Of course, conversion is a dangerous process. It frequently demands changes in oneself as well as in the one who has listened to the suggested better option. Conversion of another always involves high risk of rejection because few welcome a challenge to their complacency. Yet this weekend's gospel is a clarion call to awaken each other's conscience to an awareness of right and wrong and to do it in a way that invites commitment rather than creates alienation. This is the crunch. Condemnation is merely human. Conversion always involves collaboration with the Spirit of God which Jesus assures us

[Goanet] A strong Jan Lokpal Bill is the only way to fight corruption in this country
A strong Jan Lokpal Bill is the only way to fight corruption in this country By Nisser Dias nisserdias at gmail.com SMS to 9422437029 The countrymen led by Anna Hazare and his team are up in arms against the UPA government for drafting what they termed a weak Jan Lokpal Bill – a weapon that is foreseen to fight or rather curb corruption. Tens of thousands of people are participating in rallies, marches, demonstrations in almost all the states in support of Anna’s demand for a stringent bill wherein even the prime minister of the country will be held accountable for any form of corruption. Undoubtedly such a bill was long overdue and it is indeed the need of the hour because of rampant corruption in all the spheres of governance and administration be it at the central or state level. In the two five year term of the UPA governance the scale of corruption has been astronomical whereby the country has lost tremendous revenue at the same time has brought a bad name to the country wherein India is featured in the list of top ten as most corrupt countries. Cabinet colleagues in the Dr. Manmohan Singh government are presently locked in the Tihar jail and many more are being investigated for amassing huge wealth disproportionate to their known source of income or currying favours to corporate houses and industrialists for personal gains. This is the reason we need a strong Lokpal bill to curb the menace of corruption in its various forms. Six decades have passed since Independence but none of the governments during this period did anything concrete to wholeheartedly and sincerely introduce a full-proof Bill in the parliament to fight corruption. Every time it was introduced there was opposition to certain clauses and was conveniently shelved. It was only in April this year when 74 year old anti corruption crusader upped his ante and undertook a fast unto death making citizens of this country to support him to fight corruption that the government realized that the suppressed anger of the people was turning into a tsunami. They had no option but to introduce it. But Anna and his team contemplated their moves well. Knowing very well that any government not necessarily UPA would not draft an effective Lokpal Bill demanded that members of the civilian society be included on the drafting committee. The UPA government realized escape routes for corrupt politicians, judiciary, and other government employees were sought to be shut, they refused to incorporate recommendation of the civilian society members in the Bill. The politicians or rather some of the parliamentarians feel that the civilian should not usurp the duties or privileges of the parliament. My question is if these members of the Lok Sabha and Raja Sabha are so conscious of maintaining the sanctity of the august House, why did it take more than 60 long years to formulate a bill to curb corruption. Secondly if in a democracy the government is “of the people”, “for the people” and “by the people” why should the elected representative raise a hue and cry of including civilian society on the drafting committee and incorporating their recommendation in the bill?. Do we forfeit our rights as citizens of this country after we cast our ballot? Constitution of India gives us the right to freedom of speech and expression at the same time it endorses our right to protest and demonstrate peacefully. And Anna’s protest through indefinite hunger strike defines people’s power. For the parliamentarians on the Bill drafting committee, inclusion of the Prime minister, judiciary and certain grade officers under the ambit of Bill is not acceptable. Does not the prime minister and judiciary come under laws like the Income Tax or Indian Penal Code? Just a week ago both houses of parliament impeached a High Court judge misappropriating money deposited with the court and also for amassing wealth. Therefore earlier laws were made to include everybody. It is said, nobody can be above the law however high or low. Why should there be an exception in the Jan Lokpal Bill especially when there are plenty of allegations of corruption against the judiciary and when fingers are being pointed at prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the 2G scandal. Can we forget Bofors scandal where former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi was accused of receiving kickbacks. At the same time the country is proud to have Dr. Manmohan Singh at the helm of affairs and is projected to be Mr. Clean, so what is the fear and why is the resistance to include prime minister and judiciary under the Lokpal Bill. This resistance has given the BJP and its allies reason to go hammer and tongs at the union government. The UPA should use this tacit support of the NDA to the Anna’s protest and pass the Bill. Of course BJP is also using this opportunity to come back to power. Though there has been overwhelming support to Anna Hazare’s protest
[Goanet] Is GOA NIWAS in Delhi Privatised?
GOA NIWAS in Delhi is privatised? Or it is for non-Goans rather than Goans? It appeared more like a private hotel then Goa Govt. run Goa Niwas. Repeated here with pics video http://joegoauk-pointofview.blogspot.com/2011/08/is-goa-niwas-in-delhi-privatised.html At the reception counter, there were two ladies (not Goan but Nepalis?) as if it was a pvt. Hotel. Few Indian (non-Goan) guests were booking the rooms, once they finished, one of us very politely explained in Konkani ‘Ami Goem son aileat..’ No, they won’t understand a word. Then we tried to explain the same in English that we have come from Goa..Our visit was planned overnight (to join Anna Hazare) and took the first available flight to Delhi and hence could not pre-book from Goa Secretariat, Porvorim. (In the past, without pre-booking, we did manage to get accommodation both at Goa Sadan and Goa Bhavan (Bombay) as we were mostly accommodated indormitory) ‘Sorry, we can’t help you’ was their answer. They even talked about privatisation which we did not understand much. Then we asked if we can see the Manager (if any). They pointed out a cabin opp. Front office. We explained the same thing to the man and even showed our Ids such as election Photo Cards but no help as if we were at the wrong place . He then suggested that we should go to old GOA Sadan (18 Amrita Shergil Marg) to see if they can accommodate us there. There too we were treated like aliens by the two non-Goans. We then headed to Pahar Ganj, where we booked decent a/c room for Rs.1,200 each Much talked about Rs. 18.7 crore GOA NIWAS with 20 rooms, 4 suits, 4 dormitories, plus conference room, Swimming pool, Library, Gymkana etc was inaugurated in June 2010 by almost all the cabinet ministers including CM, speakers, MLAs, MP, CS, PWD engineers, UPA Chair person etc etc Is this GOA NIWAS not for us? I mean, not for Goans? Not a single bed out of 100 beds available for Goans? There is something going on there, perhaps, it is outsourced or privatised? Can someone pass this on to Diggu please? Re: [Goanet] Herald Editorial [28/8/11] India is born Again - Commentary
COMMENTARY: [Re: 28/Aug Herald Edit India is Born Again] We have never doubted Anna Hazare's integrity or his commitment towards clean administration. We have in fact been praising his edicated work and his fight in Maharashtra/Pune toward...s this end for many many years. He had become an Icon in our minds and perhaps our small fights in Goa against corruption in government administration had much inspiration from his dedicated work and stand. And we were happy, nay overjoyed, when Anna Hazare took the steps to TEAM up with persons like Arvind Kejrival and Kiran Bedi who too, for us were Icons of straight talk and clean intentions. BUT as the anti corruption campaign heightened with Anna going national, all of a sudden we were shell-shocked into numbness when Anna preferred to praise the development work of the Indian Hitler, Narendra Modi. For us, anyone who even wished 'good morning' or 'good evening' to this cold-blooded killer of Muslims in Godhra was a traitor with RSS-connections. Therefore, we stood back to watch and see, if the RSS-BJP was in fact backing up Anna Hazare to take him 'national' with this anti-corruption campaign in order to ride this universal wave against India's deeply rooted corrupted government administration which was increasing in leaps and bounds in recent years even with an honest to the core ' Joe ' heading India's administration as it's Prime Minister. The RSS-BJP had done it before by inflaming the 'Hindu' sentiments to no end towards building of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya which resulted in the demolition of India's prized monument, the Babri Masjid. Could it be the RSS-BJP's mastermind at work to convert this universal anti-corruption sentiments that Anna Hazare had ignited within the hearts of every Indian to their advantage and come riding to power once again to the chagrin of the Congress? Anna's taking back his statement of praising Narendra Modi did not convince us much. It could be a ploy to fool the serious minded people. We watched the 'who is who' of the RSS-BJP dancing around organizing Anti-Corruption and pro Hazare meetings and rally's in Goa. And we got more and more convinced that the RSS-BJP was indeed taking advantage of this universal anti-corruption campaign to malign the already maligned Congress and to come Robin Riding Hood to take the throne that it did not deserve. For us, neither the Congress nor the RSS-BJP deserved the throne ever, until a chance is given to other deserving elements to show us their intentions over really cleaning-up the stink of CORRUPTION. It took young Varun Gandhi as well as several RSS-BJP leaders to try to dispel this fear from the hearts and minds of people across India about their plans, being aware that their plot of clandestine take-over was exposed. People from all walks of life had joined in this 'super-anti-corruption campaign' whole-heartedly and spontaneously whether they were congress loving, BJP kissing or whatever. They wanted only one thing, That corruption be buried once and for all which was suddenly seen as hurting too much as also holding back the superpowerdom of this nation. It took the RSS-BJP to accommodate many things within the parliament which earlier they were not ready to do so. It took the RSS-BJP to climb-down from a superior stand they had taken over the Congress realizing that they couldn't fool the people of India once again that they were really against corruption. Nothing that they had done so far has given any indication that they were. At times, they were the worst off when their Mascot [L K Advini] who they planned to put on the throne failed miserably having to forcibly side-line him from prominence. How could the nation see the man who deserved to be locked-up in Tihar Jail for masterminding the Babri demolition seated on the throne of India as it's KING? How could this nation even bear to think that the RSS-BJP wanted the monster killer of thousands from Gujarat put second in line for the throne after the jail-bird Advani?? Anna Hazare and his Team must have realized this late into the campaign and have done much to dispel these doubts from the minds of the people. Were the Team Anna members too willingly wanted to see the Congress out and the RSS-BJP in?? If they were thinking on these lines, they were forced to abandon these thoughts. And this is good for India. India is cheesed off with both, the Congress and the RSS-BJP. They must be put out of circulation for a long long time so that they can forget that the coats of fatty layers that they have accumulated in all these years will not last the ouster. The thought that 'WE ARE THE KING AND THE KING MAKERS combined must be banished from their minds once and for all. Time has come to say 'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH' We are now particularly happy that Anna Hazare has broken his fast. We are particularly happy that he maintained his stand until the last. We shall want to see
