Dear all:

Bookworm [http://goabookworm.wordpress.com/] is a very innovative
children's library, run in Santa Inez, Panjim, by Sujata and Elaine (and
team). Of late, it has run into all kinds of problems, a decline in
membership and difficulties in finding a proper premises where it can carry
on its work unhindered

Question: could we as a group (or some of us, as individuals) do anything
to help the idea grow? We would not be doing a favour to Bookworm, but to
society which needs such ventures so badly In addition, we would be
doing something a great favour in terms of building the reading habit among
the young. And that is what all writers want!

Just a thought. FN

A little bit of Goa in Karachi
October 21st, 2011 | 12 Comments

Pride of Goans. Pride of Karachi. A Vestige of Great Goan
Legacy. Walking past Karachi Goan Association entrance is
like entering a wormhole, jumping into a universe which
is oblivious to cacophony of competing voices out on
Saddar road. Goan Association Hall is a landmark which
still plays an active role in Karachi's social scene.
The entrance opposite Karachi Grammar School is a humble
one and trees, as old as the Gymkhana, shadow the front
facade, or is it the back. Never-mind both are equally
 impressive.

In 1886, Goans started the Goan Portugese Association which was later
renamed as Karachi Goan Association. The task of designing was
entrusted to a relatively unknown architect known as 'Moses Somake'.
The same man went on to make his mark on Karachi the way no one else
did. The hall immediately became a center of social life of Goans in
Karachi. It hosted all kind of events for the community. In the
beginning it did not have a boundary wall and it graced the
sorrounding area. At its peak it held ten days of celebrations where
the top Goan bands performed. During World War II the KGA was turned
into Senior Officers Club for US Army.

On a regular day you will find few janitors moping the floor, which
has characteristic prepartition tiles. The furniture too has been
preserved well. The main hall does not have much of seating area but
special arrangements are made for Tambola nights and other social
events. There is a statue of Mr Cincinattus in the hall. He had been
the President of the KGA for a decade and has a residential
neighbourhood, Cincinattus Town, Now Garden, to his name. To the right
a small part of the hall is used for hosting table tennis tournaments.
there is a small library in the left section which also showcases
trophies from different eras. To the left is the billiard room. The
adjacent room is used for playing cards. Move out and take the
staircase which leads to a big dance floor which has been used for a
variety of purposes. The hall is used for holding Christmas, New year
and Easter gatherings and has been rented members for ceremonies and
commercial shooting. The congregation of the hall has dwindled over
the years but it remains a social hub for the community.

A seperate post is needed for what Goans have done for Karachi.
The thriving community of 1850s has been migrating for pastures
green abroad. There are only about 15,000 goans still living
in Karachi. KGA celebrated 125 years of existence this year.
Mr. Menin of Goans of Pakistan wondered how would it look like
when they celebrate 150 years of its existence in 2036. The
Karachi walla sincerely yearns for a better promise for
KGA and Goans. They make a vital part of pluralistic Karachi
social fabric. The enterprising community has contributed
more than its share and we can't afford to lose them.

A lot of Goans may have left but they have taken a small piece of
Karachi with them. Brian Gonsalves, a Goan from Karachi who now lives
on the Island of Margarita, Venezuela, wrote to Goans of Pakistan, My
House in Venezuela is called 'Pakistan' – how is that for
patriotism!!

COMMENT: KGA still has more than 500 members plus their dependents.
The only difference between the fate of KGA and other buildings is the
sheer activism of the remaining Goan community. Please check

They dared to challenge Goa's mining mafia
Ashwin Aghor
Issue: Oct 28, 2011

The youth of Caurem, a tribal village, fight on despite
threats

PHOTO: Nilesh Gaonkar (his hand
is in plaster) and his friends
have formed a front to fight
for the rights of the 2,000
residents of Caurem (Photos:
Ashwin Aghor)

While the authorities are busy calculating the losses caused
by Goa's mining mafia to the state exchequer, little
attention has been paid to the few people who dared to
challenge the state's mining mafia.

Residents of the tribal village Caurem, situated eight-odd
kilometres from Quepem town, once had everything in abundance
in the village. They rarely had to visit Quepem for any
needs. But the situation has now changed since their paddy
fields, coconut and jackfruit plantations are getting
destroyed. The reason: heavy contamination of ground water
due to five mines operating within a one km radius of the
village.

Five mines are operating within a one km radius of Caurem
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat once visited Caurem to inspect
the extent of damage due to mining

After visiting the area, he assured that all the mines in the
vicinity of the village would be closed immediately. But
nothing concrete has happened

The mines are operated by powerful politicians and
businessmen of the state. The mines which are being operated
in blatant violation of environmental and mining laws have
destroyed groundwater aquifers in the village to the extent
that all the perennial water streams have become dry.

Assaulted with iron rod

Disturbed by the extent of damage to environment and threat
to their very livelihood, Nilesh Gaonkar, a 24-year-old youth
from Caurem, decided to take on the might of powerful mining
mafia. He is supported by Tuslidas Velip, Samir Gaonkar and
several other friends. The youths in the village came
together and formed the Caurem Adivasi Bachao Samiti (CABS)
to save the livelihood of the 2,000-odd residents of the
village. Recipient of news channel CNNIBN's bravery award
this year, Nilesh Gaonkar holds a diploma in mechanical
engineering. He works for a private company in Verna
Industrial Estate, 10 km away near Panjim. He was brutally
assaulted by two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths in
mind-May this year and threatened with dire consequences if
he did not give up his fight against illegal mining.

PHOTO:
Dumpers lined up near the mine operated by Sheikh Mukhtar

I was on my way to work when a person assaulted me with iron
rod from behind. The first blow was on shoulder and before I
could react, came the second blow on my left hand. After
hitting me twice, the youths fled the scene, says Nilesh,
who is now more determined to fight illegal mining. Though
police detained two youths in connection with the assault,
they were let off within a couple of days and the case
remains unsolved till date. The police at Quepem declined to
comment, saying the Centre is probing illegal mining in the area.

The youths of Caurem village today want only one
thing. Complete closure of all the mines operating
in the vicinity and ecological restoration of the
area. We do not want the ore at the cost of our
lives. Mine operators are earning huge profits by
destroying us and we are left to the mercy of God,
says Tulsidas Velip. Mining has destroyed farming
and blocked the water sources of the village,
including a tributary of the Kushawati River that
  flows through the village.

The road connecting Quepem and Caurem, which is less than 10
metres wide, has become death trap with round the clock
movement of trucks carrying ores from mines to jetties and
loading spots. The uncontrolled movement of overloaded ore
trucks has made it difficult for children and senior citizens
to use the road. Especially, the school going children, who
find it difficult to reach their school right across the
road, says Nilesh.

Nilesh, Tulsidas and others mobilised the villagers and built
a front against the mine operated by one Sheikh Mukhtar.
After several representations to the mining ministry, state
and central governments the villagers have only got
assurances. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat once visited
Caurem to inspect the extent of damage due to the mines.
After visiting the area, he assured that all the mines in the
vicinity of the village would be closed immediately. But
nothing concrete has happened, Nilesh says.

There is plenty of diesel for mining trucks. I wonder why h...
Is it official that Goans are suckers to be conned time and time again? Of
course, many parts of Goa are being liberated from Goa to the benefit of
non-Goans. I never thought I would live to see the day when Vasco was no longer
a part of Goa. A drive through Vasco today, and there are no Goans to be seen.
To a lesser extent parts of Panjim, Margao and Mapusa.

 No petrol in Panjim today.

Complete chaos as tiny amounts of petrol are handed out at
Goa's petrol pumps right now. Long queues snake around
 corners. Short tempers.

One pump owner said that no petrol was coming in from Vasco
(terminal), but was being trucked from outside Goa.

Cashing on the miseries of patients
a number of postings appeared on Goanet, regarding the fleecing of
patients I was rather skeptical at first, till patients pointedly drew my
attention The greed of the specialists Doctors at premier Hosp[ital around
Goa is too common to be dismissed lightly.. Is it that they are forced to
pay for themselves and their services and also support the high maintenance
costs of the establishments ? The medicines they prescribe are also very
expensive, when the same compositions are very much available at much
cheaper costs The rumour that medical companies sponsor
lately foreign travells all found and that there is a percentage paid on
recommended tests is not without foundations Many Govt doctors are attached
to private hospitals The implicit trust in the medical fraternity and the
so called specialists appears to be exploited and abused. It is much better
to consult others, take a second opinion and only in extreme cases seek the
help of the specialists with diagnoses at hand There is no doubt in spite
of the trouble of distances the treatment outside the state is reliable and
cost effective There is urgency created with life threatening reason, which
have not been supported by outside the state consultations across the
borders The supper specialists take less than 5 minutes and 2 minutes to
dispose of the patients, the more the merrier What is the reasonable time
that should be allotted to the patients minim,um 30 minutes? The patients
history is not detailed, in the expensive filed charged ,there is absolute
rush in not allowing the patient to expose his ailments, symptoms ,
no diagnoses and suggested treatment IN half an hour the specialists
attends to 8/10 patients In Mumbai the specialists take a fixed number of
patients at half an hour interval Here the consultations charges for 2
minutes range from Rs200 to Rs 400. They direct you to do a battery
of expensive tests and only then they will give their findings and
prescribe medicines. More charges for merely reading reading the reports
and further charges.
There is a Manager at most of the Hospitals The registrations are done ,
when the doctor is conducting operation for next 2hours or so The patient
are waiting without this information The appointments made earlier at fixed
time are not communicated about the non availability of the said consultant
After the rigours of 2/3 hrs operation the doctor is mentally fagged out
, ill disposed to do justice to the waiting patients and naturally the
hurry to dispose of 15/20 patients as quickly as possible before lunch
break At the registration counter they inform you that there are no
patients, but at the OPD there is a line of 10/15 patients There is plan to
cash on the patients attending, so they may not lose them
A patient was fitted with two stents, after angiography, angioplasty on the
advise of serious consequences other wise The health of the
patient deteriorated within months after shelling out 41/2 llakhs He
referred to outside the stae facility, where in was diagnosed that a faulty
valve was the root cause and the previous treatment was not advised before
attending to the valve
In yet another case the patient was charged for Rs400/ just for noting
blood pressure, no word about the actual immediate ailment or any medicine
prescribed in the interim It took just 2 minutes for the specialist and
further directed for very expensive tests A second consultations with
another Doctor revealed no alarm at all and the cardiogram was normal
In a third case the patient was advised immediate surgery as the the
problem was life threatening The patient got the second opinion
outside state and for the last 4 years is leading healthy
life without any operation whatsoever In yet another case the patient was
asked to transplant a vein , promising all the process of medical claim
.When the patient could not shoulder 60to 70,000, the doctor`s reaction and
arrogance turned 180 degrees The case was treated at the Govt facility for
spine problem and the Doctors are laughing at the the suggested procedure
The patient is rlieved of all associated symptoms, without absolute no need
of vein transplant A doctor took 2 minutes , after being late for one hour
consultations time and with 20 patients waiting The new file was in virgin
state with only the name of the patient, no diagnoses, no prescription and
no time to peruse the previous reports or the visual data. any way the
super specialist has no facility to view such records It

The cash long idling in your bank
accounthttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/search.cms?query=bank%20account
is
due to acquire more value, thanks to a Reserve Bank of India move earlier
this week to free savings bank deposit
rateshttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/search.cms?query=savings%20bank%20deposit%20rates.
Bankers say better returns are in the offing for depositors as competition
will intensify.

This path-breaking regulation will enhance and protect
savingshttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/search.cms?query=savings
returns
from the brunt of persistent inflation, says Rana Kapoor, MD CEO, Yes
Bank. The RBI http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/search.cms?query=RBIhas
said banks will have to offer a uniform interest rate on deposits of up to
Rs 1 lakh. For higher deposits, banks are free to offer differential
interest rates. Experts believe the average interest rate on savings
accounts will increase by 50 to 100 basis points (100 bps equals 1
percentage point) from 4% over the medium term. About 20-25% of total bank
deposits are parked in savings accounts.

The Impact

For starters, interest rates can swing both ways. But experts say rates are
unlikely to fall much because savings deposits offer the cheapest source of
funds for banks and they would not want to lose by lowering rates sharply.
A possible upshot will be product innovations linked to savings accounts
and increase in user charges. In countries such as Canada, Japan,
Australia, New Zealand, the UK and US, where interest rates have been
freed, most savings bank accounts carry charges if the number of
transactions exceeds a permissible level. Similarly, a number of banks in
Hong Kong launched new products such as combined savings and checking
accounts after savings deposit rates was freed in 2001.

The RBI thinks product innovations in India may spill over to operations
such as branches, web-based channels and ATMs. Rates offered may differ
based on the flexibility of operation of savings bank accounts and the
degree of liquidity offered such as notice period for withdrawal, number of
deposits and/or withdrawals allowed per month and percentage of amount that
can be withdrawn in any given month, among others.

Should you Switch Banks?

YES
Bankhttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/yes-bank-ltd/stocks/companyid-16552.cms
was
the first to increase the interest rate offered on savings bank accounts by
2% to 6%. More will follow. But should you switch banks to take advantage
of higher rates? You should not be keeping huge amount of cash in your
bank account in the first place, says financial planner Lovaii Navlakhi.
Most experts advise against switching banks unless you happen to keep a
substantial amount lying idle in a savings account.

If you still go ahead, check the fees. Most analysts believe that banks
would offset higher costs by hiking fees for services. This can be in the
form of higher lending rates for borrowers, transaction charges and
increase in minimum balance requirement. The prudent way is to first gauge
your usage pattern of banking services - do you frequently run out of
cheque books or withdraw cash often. In that case, you need to also check
what kind of charges banks levy for these services.

The second key factor is convenience. Savings deposits tend to be sticky
for most since we use it for loan repayment, utility-bill payments and even
investments. If you have had a long relationship with your bank, changing
the account can be cumbersome. There are also the benefits that come from
the loyalty factor in the form of a free credit card or a faster loan
sanction and one should not ignore this aspect when deciding whether to
shift, says Navlakhi.

The rates will now closely reflect the policy rates. This means like any
other deposit rate, savings rate will also fluctuate and a bank offering a
higher rate today may not be the one always offering the best rate.

U.S. Army and Air Force officers are required to have a bachelor's degree at a
minimum. The physicians are required to have a medical degree and at least 3
years of medical residency training in a hospital. So neither the officers nor

Dear all:

Bookworm [http://goabookworm.wordpress.com/] is a very innovative

Question: could we as a group (or some of us, as individuals) do anything

society which needs such ventures so badly In addition, we would be
doing something a great favour in terms of building the reading habit among
the young. And that is what all writers want!

Amazing, Radha. I too heard (or imagined) the Konkani words you say are there.
At 1:41 to 1:43 of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tESLeLhYg0M  Except that it
sounds more like: Tuje bapaichem castao (with a tilde).

Questions (as JC would put it):

(1) Do you think this is the Jamaican varient of Xashti Konkani?
(2) Do you think some Bardezkar rendered it wrongly for good ol Bob?
(3) Some (cryto Goan) lyricist put it in, knowing well it would pass
uncontested.

Incidently good ol Shouted Marley was a great icon of ours in younger days.
The first music legend from the Third World.

But I think that to translate his name into Konkani is too much of a conspiracy
theory, considering that that would have to be worked out with his Scottish
dad, and his Wailers' colleagues beforehand.

REVOLUTION IN SQUARES AROUND THE WORLD
Goa had its own story At Lohia Maidan Margao and at azad Maidan Panjim , if
they can be called squares It is here the public call was given for
regional plan and MOI , Konkani language ,among many others The symbolic
protests are a signs of times of people`s power on social and political
issues not related to freedom The Anna fast in Delhi is another landmark of
public square and park movement against corruption that received world
coverage Jantar Mantar and Ramlila grounds are the famous hunting grounds
for public protests IN MUMBAI Shivaji park is the focus of all popular
uprising and clarion calls for people dissensions against unpopular
regimes.
The Tiananmen square in China which led to massacre of
young protesters for democracy and was brutally repressed with state power
and force much to the discomfiture of world opinion. The protest in Egypt,
Cairoat Tahrir led to the downfall of Hosni Mubarakh and ushered in new
hope of freedom from the oppressive regime The protests at wall street for
economic advantage, a has spread throughout the Democratic Nations of the
world in an unprecedented peaceful manner Gaddafi the last dictator has
been deposed of after street protests and battles More street portests are
taking shape in Syria ,Turkey and other Arab and African Countries
It is interesting that the battle grounds of to day are the streets and
public squares and parks Democratic and political freedom
are conceptualized on the streets , which so far served the purpose
of transport These spots seem to have acquired new purpose for actions
demands and spontaneous uprising. The politicians in India may bring out a
new legislation reserving parks and squares for purpose other than protests
and uprising

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation is funded by the ROCKFELLER BROTHERS FUND
(RBF) whose byline reads PHILANTROPY FOR AN INTERDEPENDENT WORLD.  The Mission
statement of the RBF reads  advances social change that contributes to a more
just, sustainable and peaceful world. RBF runs a PROJECT ON MIDDLE EAST
DEMOCRACY ,INC.,(POMED) which has admitted funding the LEADING VOICES of the
ARAB SPRING which has caused violent change of Governments in the Middle
East.

The Ramon Magsasay Award Foundation was formed to honour the memory of Ramon
Fidel Magsaysay by the Rockfeller Brothers Fund with the concurrence of
Phillipines. Phillipines is a country very closely allied to the United States
of America and permits on its soil the erection, operation, and regular
uninterrupted sustenance of  United States Military Bases. The Ramon
Magsaysay  Award Foundation  restricts itself strategically to Asia instead of
spreading itself and its resources thin all over the world. Asia is also home
to China and India , two of the world's most populous countries. In the
economic context ,these two countries are fast growing world economies as also
strategic markets for the growth of American business

The version of the LOKPAL BILL supported by Shri Hazare, Shri Arvind
Kejriwal,Smt. Kiran Bedi, Adv. Prasant Bhushan seeks to compose a LOKPAL
comprising of Ramon Magsaysay Award Winners, Nobel Prize Winners of Indian
origin( not neccessary to hold Indian Citizenship), retired Supreme Court
Judges, and other Eminent people ( How eminenceis to be measured is not
prescribed) which would provide oversight over the Prime Minister, conduct
of Members of Parliament ,both inside and outside Parliament, serving Judges of
the High Courts, serving Judges of the Supreme Court, serving Chief Justices of
the Supreme Court of India and all Government servants. The LOKPAL is to be
armed with an independent , entirely seperate machinery with powers to
investigate, charge, arrest and try cases of corruption in India. No provision
is made for oversight over the LOKPAL. Members of the LOKPAL are not required
to be elected by the citizens of India. It may be noted
that the LEADING VOICES in India of the LOKPAL BILL as proposed by the Team of
Shri Hazare are Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi , who are themselves RAMON
MAGSAYSAY AWARD WINNERS.

Colloquial American writing and wisdom holds that THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A
FREE LUNCH in USA. Current events in contemporary affairs of the world like
in  Afghanistan, Pakistan,Iraq,Tunisia, Egypt,Libya,Syria, the battles of Al
-Shadab organisation involving bombing of its own citizenry( one group of
citizens against other groups of citizens)  are pointers to the applicability
of the American wisdom that holds THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A FREE LUNCH.

IS THERE A FREE LUNCH IN THE RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARD? IS SHRI HAZARE A
FRONTRUNNER TO BE THE RECIPIENT OF THE RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARD IN 2012?

LONG LIVE THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA. MAY HER CITIZENS REMAIN EVER VIGILANT. IS
NOT ETERNAL VIGILANCE THE PRICE OF FREEDOM?

Dear friends/ Editors
I confirm that this incident has taken place in Dabolim airport on Jet
Airways during the checks at their counter . They have objected about these
meat products , including sausages not to carry to Mumbai on domestic
routes. The person who has travel is Marcus Moraes and his wife , they are
my relatives/cousins and I assure that this has taken place in Dabolim Goa.
This airline Jet Airways should be banned in Goa and no Goan should fly in
this Airlines please.
Can the Govt. of Goa take this matter with the Airlines and ask for
explanation, under what rules this product is banned.
I take this opportunity to request the local newspapers to publish this
incident taken place and I am ready for any consequences if they deny that
incident.

need to have a relevant and colourful information source and Bookworm
most certainly provided that space.Thanks. Anita Mathew (Consultant

I was waiting in a queue to fill my tank. the line was snaking from maruti
temple at 3pm. hardly any vehicle was moving. Just as we reached the curve
there was thunder and heavy rain. Many people jumped the Q just as we reached
nbsp;thenbsp;bend every thingnbsp;came to a stand still and we could hear
some argueing the people filling their bottles threatened the pump owner and he
just shut the pump and went of.nbsp; After waiting for 20 minutes I phoned the
police. Very cooperative voice was heard. She said the police were already
sent. But what arrived at the pump was a traffic van to clear up the
congestion. Phoned again she said now what is the problem. I said the pump had
closed because of the people threatening the man to fill petrol in the
vehiclesnbsp;. After another ten minutes another Jeep arrived and the cop
tried to investigate the problem. He ordered the pump man to fill the bottles
and kept two constables to mind the Q. He sat in his jeep and went off. Is it
legal to fill petrol in bottles and gallons I just wondered what law and order
is this?

Angle Higher Secondary School NSS Special Camp – 2011-2012

*Respect is Essence of all Education: Viegas *

*Astitva,* the NSS (National Service Scheme) unit of Shri Nirakar Education
Society’s S S Angle Higher Secondary School concluded its seven day special
camp at Government High School, Sadolxem, Canacona on Monday. The theme of
the camp was ‘Live Safe, Live Long’

Addressing the NSS volunteers, the Chief Guest at the valedictory function
Valerian Viegas popularly known as ‘Anna’ observed that respect is the
essence of all education and the strong foundation for a healthy civil
society. “Respect for the self, respect for others, respect for the
environment, respect for money and respect for everything is a must for a
good life and meaningful education only then we will realize that every job
is special and carries a dignity to it.”

Noted musicologist Gregory D’Sa, who designed custom-made musical
instruments for erstwhile Bollywood directors, was the guest of honour.
Principal of S S Angle Higher Secondary School Mr. Jairam K. Gaonkar,
Manager Mr. Chetan Acharya, Headmaster of Government High School, Sadolxem,
Mr Sudesh Naik, former headmaster Mr Ulhas Pai Bhatikar and PTA President
Mr Theu Velip, Arjun Gaonkar were present on the occasion along with over
50 local people.

Earlier the camp was inaugurated on October 18, 2011 by Mr Satyendra Bale
in the presence of Deputy Sarpanch and local panch Mr Bipin Prabhudesai and
Lions Club of Canacona President Anant G. Sawant.

The campers cleaned the school campus, Mohini Devi Temple premises, and
Rosary Church premises and filled the potholes on the approach roads on
either side of the narrow bailey bridge at Sadolxem. A door-to-door Aadhaar
card awareness campaign covering 76 houses; a mountain trail to Gogel;
designing posters on safety were also a part of the camp schedule. The
campers also prepared about 30 posters with educational quotes and the same
were displayed in the school building.

Various personality development sessions were conducted for the campers.
Head of the Department of English at Shree Mallikarjun College Mr. Vivid
Pawaskar conducted a workshop on teamwork; Rehanna Fondekar conducted a
workshop on craft skills on the theme best out of waste; Biology teacher of
Shree Nirakar High School, Chandralekha Mestri conducted a seminar on
Addictions in adolescence. National Awardee Mr. Chandrakant Pai Kir also
enlightened the campers on the issues of senior citizens.

Aditi Prabhu Gaonkar and Mahavir Singh Rathod were adjudged as the best
female and male campers respectively. Ankita Pagi was given a special award
for her impressive dance performance by local investment consultant
Lawrence Barreto. Sheikh Hamza of Government High School was felicitated on
the occasion for his selfless services to the campers.

The campers carried out all the seven day programmes independently with a
sense of social responsibility under the guidance of the camp director
Anthony M Barreto aka Tony Martin and teachers. They shared their learning
experiences at the end of every day. The camp ended with a cultural
programme followed by dinner and camp fire.

Hello?!!

So . WHO decides WHICH life (that of the mother or that of the

Formula 1 in India: exciting Start and Future!

I have been able to watch the F1 Indian Grand Prix LIVE on TV CH TEN here in
Australia. just concluded at around 1630 IST.
5.1 KMs track and allied facilities built in Budd, 15 kms outside Delhi. The
place is very impressive indeed; the drivers say they like the surface of the
track too. The grand stand and the pitts lanes are good and well planned, too.
I saw the lively crowd made up of the Rich and Famous; from India at the Venue.
Sachin T was given the honour of waving the Checkered Flag for the Start.

The view all around was good too, and it was a 'sight to behold' in India.
However soon after the race started, the flaws come to light! All the 'dust' on
the tarmac and around was whipped up into the air, lap after lap, of screeching
rubber! After 25 laps (of 60 in all), the visibility was much down and there
were a few race related incidents; and then only 19 of the 24 cars finished the
Race.
Could not see the opening and closing ceremonies, though I caught glimpses of
beautiful Indian women in the Cheer crowd.
Something should be done to combat the DUST problem in future. This sort of
problem has not been seen in Singapore, Malaysia, Bahrain, and other countries,
with even lesser resources, than India.

Finally why the bloody hell ? everything has to be in and around Delhi??. Is
India only as big as Delhi. What about Kolkotta, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and
Ahmedabad etc?
Is it time to move the Capital of India from Delhi to Nagpur that is in the
centre of India, so to say.
Or else have Delhi only as the Political Govt.Capital, not the sporting capital
too.
Down with North Indian Hegemony!!

Did Bob Marley know
Konkani?

Tujea bapichem kestaum in “Iron
Lion Zion”

Yes, I too heard this song and I know for sure Bob Marley
knew Konkani and was in Goa, and I was not surprised.

Listen to this !

How Bob Marley’s another
hit song came to be known as “No Woman,
No Cry” and it all started in Anjuna, Goa, India.

This was the time when young Bob Marley visited Anjuna, Goa in the
seventies.

All Anjunites came to see this black legend in large numbers.

It seems Idalina, a young deaf-mute girl from Anjuna who regularly
supplied tea and local snacks to hippies on Friday’s Anjuna Flea Market asked
an educated Anjunkarn Matilda, who this attractive
young man was, in sign language.

Matilda did not know how to explain the name “Bob Marley” to Idalina.

So she opened her mouth wide and made a face like she was
creaming her lungs out to express “Bob Marley” in Konkani deaf-mute language.

Since that day as soon as she saw Bob Marley, Idalina
started to scream loudly.

Bob Marley couldn’t take it no more. He took out his pen and
started writing the song titled. “No Woman, No Cry!”

Yes, Bob Marley did know Konkani and “Tujea Bapaichem
kestaum” was inserted in his English lyrics when Idalina’s Pai, Bostulo saw
both Bob and
Idalina entwined in each other’s arms on a Full
Moon Friday Night’s Party at Anjuna Flea Market! And a week later while
relaxing and smoking on the beach, when a local Reddo came lunging at him at
full speed for no apparent reason ,Buffalo Soldier soon followed. And the
rest is history!

Sacred Heart High School

Serving Society Since 1912

Verla-Parra, Bardez, Goa Pin – 403510

APPEAL

100 GLORIOUS YEARS – We at Sacred Heart High School, Parra are overwhelmed
with a sense of joy and pride that our school has withstood the text of
time. Sacred Heart High School, situated in a serene, rustic ambience is
one of the pioneering English Medium Secondary Schools established in 1912.
It is in fact the *2nd oldest recognized English medium schools* in Goa,
imparting sound intellectual and human formation through a value based
system of Education, with the Blessings of the Sacred Heart. The sincere
dedicated efforts of the staff and the students alike and the cooperation
of parents and well-wishers have helped us to have achieved a pass
percentage of 93.6% at the SSC examination of April 2011 besides excelling
in sports and co-curricular activities.

We now enter our Centenary with a vision for the future to scale newer
heights. It is our fervent desire to create an atmosphere and provide
better facilities for imparting education in consonance with the needs of
modern times. Our buildings have braved nature’s onslaught and are in need
of urgent repairs right from the roof to windows and window frames.
Extension of the hall, additional furniture, an AV room with an LCD
projector, improvement of our Library and such other infrastructural
development are some of our needs. The task is daunting and our resources
are simply not enough to meet the renovation costs and hosting of various
activities to commemorate this momentous occasion.

We therefore appeal to your esteemed generosity to support our needs by
placing an advertisement or giving us your message in our souvenir, or by
sponsoring an event or by making a donation. Besides your advertisement,
our souvenir will carry articles from ex-students, ex-staff, students,
teachers’; photographs and memorabilia. So do share memories of your school
life with us.

Advertising in our souvenir will give wide publicity to your organization/

The Indian preacher and the fake orphan scandal
An Indian missionary charity falsely portrayed young Buddhist girls
from Nepal as orphans of murdered Christians in a global
fund-raising operation involving British and American churches.

Dr PP Job, a well-known evangelist, admitted that many of the girls
were not orphans
By Dean Nelson, New Delhi4:23PM BST 28 Oct 2011 4 Comments
Parents paid a child-trafficker more than £100 to take their daughters
to good schools in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, but instead they were
taken more than 1,200 miles to Tamil Nadu, southern India.
At the Michael Job Centre, a Christian orphanage and school in
Coimbatore, they were converted to Christianity, given western names
and told that its charismatic founder, Dr PP Job, was now their
father.
On websites, the children were given serial numbers and profiles. The
charity claimed they had been either abandoned by their parents who
did not want the financial burden of raising girls, or orphaned after
their Christian parents were murdered by Nepal's Maoist insurgents.
The profiles were used to attract financial sponsors from around the world.
Many of the donors were in the United States, Holland and Britain,
where Dr Jobs's sister organisation, Love in Action, is run from St
Mary's C of E Church in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset.

Orphanage attack 'sin against God' 26 Aug 2008
An anti-trafficking charity run by Lt Col Philip Holmes, a retired
British Army officer, assisted Indian officials in a raid on the
Coimbatore centre last month, when 23 children were rescued.
His group, the Esther Benjamins Trust, discovered that none of the
children were from Christian families, very few were, in fact, orphans
and some of the girls had been kept apart from their families for up
to 10 years. Among those rescued were six girls from one extended
Buddhist family in Humla district in northern Nepal who were all
renamed on their first day at the Michael Job Centre.
One 17 year-old, Daniele, whose real name is Tara, told The Daily
Telegraph yesterday she was seven when she was taken from her village
with her five-year-old sister, Anna Bella, whose real name is Upaal.
On the charity's website, Daniele is presented as an orphan girl
from the area bordering India and Nepal, while her sister is
described as an orphan whose parents were killed by Maoists.
There was nobody to take care of her. Our Nepal missionary brought
her to the Michael Job Centre, her profile reads. Anna Bella is
listed as child number 146, and Daniele 148, part of a batch of six
girls including their four cousins who were renamed Tryphosa (143),
Tryphena (150), Jael, and Persis (144).
Daniele said: My mother and father couldn't afford our education
and food. There was no threat from the Maoists. We are all Buddhists
but now we have two religions.
Our parents thought girl children should get married, and that if we
got an education we would get money. They thought we were going to
Kathmandu. They did not know it was a Christian school.
Dr Job, the orphanage founder, has left India for the United States,
where he did not respond to enquiries. But in a letter to the Indian
child welfare authority in Coimbatore last month, he admitted many of
the Nepalese children were not orphans and blamed Dal Bahadur Phadera,
the alleged trafficker who brought the girls to India, for misleading
him.
Most of the children mentioned were brought by Himalayan Orphanage
Development Centre, Humla, run by Mr Dal Bahadur Phadera ... atthe
time of admission it was brought to attention that the children are
uncared [for] and that they are living within India. The children were
neglected by the society and [were] in [the] orphanage. Till today we
are taking care of children properly, he wrote.
The charity Love in Action raised around £18,000 for the Michael Job
Centre between 2007 and 2010, but Tom Reeves, churchwarden at St
Mary's, declined to comment on whether he and his colleagues had been
duped.
Mr Phadera was unavailable for comment. A 2006 Unicef report said his
organisation was acting in direct violation of the international
convention of children's rights.
In an interview with Avenues TV, a Nepalese channel, he denounced Lt
Col Holmes's

[Goanet] IS CHIEF MINISTER DIGAMBAR KAMAT LOOSING HIS MARBLES?

Mr. Chief Minister, your wife Asha has stood by you as a rock. But in the
current scenario Truth and Sincerity may be your only Asha (hope). Why are
you pretending not to see something that even the blind can see and feel
all around? The devastation and degradation of once our beautiful Goa.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who is otherwise known for his cool and
tranquil composure seems to have of late started losing his cool. Is it the
disintegration of the cool cucumber, now falling apart? Ironically it comes
with the winter round the corner and the summer a long way off. So one
wonders whether it is the mountain of illegal mining that is taking the
toll or whether it is the Regional Plan 2021 that is just putting him out
of gear.

His two recent statements are symptomatic of a very rattled and defensive
Chief Minister. Something we have not seen in Digambar Kamat for years as
the Power Minister and over the last four and a half years as Chief
Minister.

His statement that he has been able to give Goa stable and good governance
is far from true. What he has only achieved is to keep his chair secure at
all costs. But in that process Goa and Goans have been paying a
catastrophic price. The damage he has done to Goa is irreparable and
irreversible. His cabinet has been incohesive to say the least with every
Minister a law to himself and with his own personal agenda. He has not been
able to lead and command respect while his ministers and MLA’s have been
kicking him all around to have their way.

Mr. Chief Minister even a peon at the Secretariat will vouch that there is
a total collapse in the administration. Decisions taken are stayed or
reversed within minutes due to vested political compulsions. The State
Exchequer is on the brink if not already in a state of bankruptcy. There
have been agitations and public outcry on a day to day basis. Almost every
issue remains unresolved if not shelved. By now the Chief Minister himself
must have lost track of the number of committees he has appointed to study
even trivial issues that have arisen and he has been unable to resolve.
Unable to handle any issue he has always looked to the High Command in
Delhi for succor. In his tenure he has spent more time in Delhi then being
here on ground attending and resolving issues.

His other statement now that he is only unanswerable to the people of
Margao is ridiculous and in poor taste. As Chief Minister of the State he
is answerable to all. Margao may be his constituency which by all means he
needs to nurse but he leads the State and that he could not have lost sight
of.

While clinging to his chair the Chief Minister has failed to take tough
decisions to protect Goa’s interests and on this I would dare the Chief
Minister to an open debate in any forum. He now needs to take overall
responsibility for all the mess that he has left this state in. After being
Minister for Mines for over a decade his claim that there has been no
illegal mining only goes to prove the insincerity and deceptiveness of the
person holding the reins of the State.

While Goa is being ravaged by illegal mining on one hand and also by
unsustainable and unplanned development without enhancing the basic
infrastructure, the Chief Minister has conveniently chosen to look the
other way. But Mr. Chief Minister, much as you would like us to be, Goans
are not donkeys. Goa is in a very precarious State and needs to be now
de-wormed. The coming Assembly elections may be the last opportunity to
administer that strong bitter dose to save Goa from slipping into a Coma. A
point of no return.

Giving Constitutional status to Lokpal and Lokayuktas is the best solution

Mr Shantaram Naik M.P. and a member of Standing Committee of Parliament
on Personnel, Public Grievances and Law and Justice said that giving
constitutional status to Lokpal and Lokayuktas would be the best way of
creating these institutions.

Mr Naik said he was of the strong view that concept put forth by
Congress General Secretary Shri Rahul Gandhi, during his speech in the
Lok Sabha, in the last monsoon session, would be the ideal solution and,
those who wish that these institutions should be strong, effective and
independent, have to welcome Mr Rahul Gandhi’s idea as, it gives more
than what they are asking for.

Under this concept, basic law will be laid down in the Constitution,
and, the Parliament and State Legislatures, will thereafter, pass
appropriate legislations.

Mr Naik said Lokpal and Lokayuktas enacted in this manner will place
these institutions on high pedestal, which should be welcomed by all
those who, genuinely, want these institutions to be free from any
influence, whatsoever.

Mr Naik said as to what type of bill , the Legislative Assembly of Goa
should take for consideration, is left to the wisdom of the members of
the assembly but, it is strange that when Shri Anna Hazare is strongly
opposed to the State Assemblies enacting Lokayukta bills, his supporters
in Goa, insist on Goa Assembly enacting such a bill.

Mr Naik further said that when a Central legislation is taking shape
and since the concerned Standing Committee of Parliament is discussing
all the drafts, suggestions, points of view of various NGOs, eminent
social workers and legal luminaries, it would have been prudent if Goa
Government too, had waited for the outcome of the exercise carried on
by Parliament of India, rather than falling pray to some sections of the
people in the State, who have already ditched Anna Hazare by demanding
enactment of Lokayukta bill by Goa

Assembly.

Idea: start an online library. Home delivery within 24hrs and pick up in
the next 24hrs. The website should have all the books one can choose
from. You can also start annual unlimited membership where people can
rent out any no of books sitting at home. Off course the ticket value

We would not be doing a favour to Bookworm, but to society which needs

Using a cleaned up digitized version of the original track, I tried toanalyze
that line in Bob Marley's Iron Lion Zion, which sounds likeTujea bapaichem
kestao, acoustically, by identifying similar soundselsewhere in the track, and
by asking two people who are not veryfamiliar with Konknni to identify the
words, without giving them anyhints. What I found is the following.

That line is Till I bypass and take a stop, which makes sense in thecontext.
Two fragments of this line are sung elsewhere in the track. The first one at the
beginning is Then I take a stop and the secondone is Till I bypass route. I
provide some evidence in support of myanalysis in the zipped folder at the
following link:

http://www.tinyurl.com/IronLionZion1

Please download the zipped folder, and unzip it. Then open thepowerpoint file

Since my turning into an adult, I have had a nagging feeling that there is
something wrong with 'God' as projected.
And as I am getting much much older, I believe that if at all a CURSE has
decended on this beautiful EARTH,
it is that GOD which has been associated with all these curseful so called '
RELIGIONS'.
I wonder if it is possible for HISTORY to find out who it is that
INVENTED this GOD OF DESTRUCTION,

Is Team-Anna going the GBA way?
By Nisser Dias
nisserdias at gmail.com
SMS to 9422437029

In the current week we are hearing on the television and reading on the
newspapers that there has been a lot of mix-up and misunderstanding
between the members of Team Anna. Two prominent personalities like noted
lawyer Prashant Bhushan and RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal were assaulted.
Another two members quit core committee of 22. Then there is confusion
between Anna Hazare and Prashant Bushan over the latter’s comment on
Kashmir.

What Team Anna was for the entire country, Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA) was
for Goa. Sadly though as both the movements grew and received immense
support from the citizens of the country and the state, believing that
these groups would catapult us into a new era or rather a new India,
where corruption at all levels would be curtailed and destruction of our
hills and fields and shoreline and our countryside would be stopped.
Instead cracks developed in the groups. Some personalities who came into
limelight because of the movement, carved a lifesize image of themselves
and became despotic. They started considering themselves bigger than the
issue and the entire structure started crumbling and finally bit the
dust. It happened to GBA and similar situation is unfolding in Team Anna.

The reason being each core member wanted his will to be adopted, each
core member wanted to be the spokesperson of the movement, each of them
had their own opinions on the issue and instead of coming to a consensus
within the core group, they publicly voiced their opinions even going to
the extent of indulging in character assasination thereby creating a
divide among themselves. Some members in the GBA became so addicted to
being in the public eye that they did not want to resolve issues but
wanted, ‘The mess to continue’.

Team Anna is going through a similar crisis that GBA has already
experienced. Can we forget that after the massive GBA rally at Azad
Maidan in December 2006, some miscreants had vandalized Patricia Pinto’s
house at Campal in a bid to dissuade her, many other members had
received threatening calls to disassociate themselves from GBA, but the
movement carried on for some time with vigour and enthusiasm because of
collective decision making. However when the movement slowed down, some
publicity hungry members felt like fish out of water due to lack of
being seen on television or news dailies. Similar situation seems to
have developed in the Anna Team with eminent lawyer being manhandled and
a shoe being thrown at Kejriwal. Then Prashant Bhushan making a public
statement on Kashmir and the media aligning the same as the stand
adopted by Team Anna thereby creating differences between prominent
members of Team Anna.

Another parallel that can be drawn from Team Anna and GBA is that both
the movement had managed to put the governments in power be it at the
Union or state level in the dock and forcing them to retract from its
stand and follow the dictum of the people of this country and state.
Team Anna and GBA tasted success at every stage with great difficulty
though. It is at a crucial stage like this that either members of the
group or people at large start expecting more. They view activist as an
aspirant to contest the election and being their voice in assembly or
Parliament. But when the person who is seen as their choice outright
rejects the proposal then the masses feel betrayed. And Dr.Oscar Rebello
a victim of such a campaign. He led the GBA movement from the front. He
was seen as a new avatar to replace our corrupt elected representatives
but when he refused he was painted as a traitor.

Similar situation is likely to arise in Team Anna, citizens of this
country will expect Team Anna to form a party and contest elections and
if that does not happen, Anna’s fight against corruption will be termed
as a farce and maybe a show to collect money from people.

Then just as GBA initiated a programme by organizing public meetings all
over the state to educate voters on whom to vote, how to vote and why to
vote, Team Anna also started such a programme but the difference was
they visited places where by-polls were being held and urged voters not
to cast their ballot in favour of the Congress party and it did have the
required effect, Congress candidates in four different states were
defeated. Nevertheless Team Anna also suffered a setback as two of its
members Rajendra Singh and P V

Dear Anil,

I agree that this incident seems to be a case of forced conversions and
fraud perpetrated on little girls for whose parents sending them away from
homes in Nepal seemed to be the best choice for their future.

There are many Christian Evangelists in India, some genuine most others
fake. The genuine ones mistakenly or not, take the Bible at its literal
direction Go forth and spread the good news of the Gospel to every
creature. The fake ones do it for the money. Getting money from Protestant
Christians in the West is like taking candy from a small child. As long as
they are told that X number of people have come to Christ in India, the
taps will keep on gushing from their generosity.

But seriously Anil, let's take a slightly deeper look at this issue. There
is a lot of poverty in India and the girl-children are the first ones to
suffer as a consequence. They are treated as a burden on their families as
everyone knows. How many Hindu organizations are taking in such children and
helping to bring them to decent adulthood? Has the Indian state succeeded
where Hindu organizations have failed. No, again. If that were the case such
Christian organizations would have no raison d'être. Missionaries, however
misleading the word, take in these children, given them necessities of life,
an education and let them go when they are ready to work and make a life for
themselves. What do you see wrong in this? If they make them Christians in
the bargain they could always leave their new-found faith if and whenever
they wanted. If I were a child and abandoned, it would matter little if I
was taken in and cared for and even converted to a Hindu or Muslim, Jain,
Parsi Sikh or whatever.

True, the most selfless way to do this would have been to take in these
children for their own sake and not to convert them. But this cannot happen
unless someone gives money which when from abroad, seems to come with a
string attached. And Indians unfortunately don't cover this gap. Sorry Desai
saheb, your Jan Sanghis, RSS, BJPs, Shiv Senas and whatever names you choose
to call those fanatics and zealots, are greedy little parochial and selfish
buggers who cannot see beyond their grubby little pork barrels and that,
except for the Arya Samajites and the few genuine charitable Hindu
individuals, has always been the case. They would rather put hundreds of
thousands of crores of gold in some temple handis or build some
earth-shattering Antillias as one of the Ambanis did, than give that
equivalent to their poor, here and now. Not to talk of their entire wealth
like Bill Gates has done to solve problems in some rich but destitute
country eight thousand miles from his own shores.

So before you venture to criticize the P P Jobs and their undeniably sordid
ilk, look into your own Hindu souls to change the way you look at India's
poor and helpless children.

Charity, as you quite rightly said, does begin at home.

Roland.

The 17th Century Chapel of Our Lady of TODO O BEM, Verem, Goa

Believe me or not, every time I saw that sign board (on Betim-Verem Road), I
said to myself ‘I must visit the Chapel soon’
but it took me about 5 years to actually visit the beautiful 17th Century
Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Todo-o-Ben (All that is Good).

Although, it says built in late 1700s, it looks lot older than that as if built
in1600s

The chapel has characteristics like that of a Church.

It has ‘Malloy’ (Choir upstairs) and sacristy too.

Main altar is of fully carved wood ( reminds me of the chapel at Maquinez
Palace)

The chapel facade niche holds two large statues of saints on both sides –see pic

The chapel is recently (1998) renovated/Restored with the help of the villagers
and Fundação Oriente

Currently it is maintained with whatever received in the donation Box provided
for the purpose.

Looks like it was once, located at the Mandovi river bank now there are
houses/road infront.

There is also a large abandoned Portuguese house nearby.

How to get here:
After disembarking the Panjim-Betim Ferry, take road towards left to
Verem/Candolim
Just before Verem junction, you will see a sign board ‘XVII Century Chapel’
(see pic /Clip) take inside road as directed and
the Chapel is about 150mtrs from here (Main road)

The house in front (Gonsalves) holds the keys and he will show you around, make
sure you put something in the donation box
or else you will be reminded.

Also, understand there is a monthly Mass service on every 3rd Wednesday of the
month at 6pm.
The chapel worth visiting

As the World's Population crosses 7 Billion, it is evident that our planet
is finding it increasingly difficult to support our increasing population.
But the point to be made here, is that the latter is mainly due to the
exploitation of the world’s resources and destruction of its environment by
the privileged few. Just take the case of Goa, where in addition to mining
devastating the state, we have un-necessary mega housing and other
destructive projects which are destroying our environment, reducing
farmland, polluting land/water etc. But what is more unfortunate is that
this is happening with in called EDUCATED/Literate Goa; Goans in
general have given Goa away to the corrupt and uneducated set of
Pathetic/Destructive MLA's. Education is supposed to take the society/area
forward but in Goa, I think Goans have actually taken it backwards. If
educated/literate people can let their community/land down, what hope do we
have for the other regions on our planet where illiteracy is very high?

Hi
I'd take the prior poster's idea of increasing distribution and visibility
further.

There's a very healthy segment of young readers amongst the tourist,
itinerant and mid-term residents of the state, who live and collect in
concentrated areas. They might not make the trip to Bookworm either because
they don't travel to Panjim, or because they are unaware. There are simple
ways to get to them.

You could, for instance, set up a pop-up library at the weekly markets, or
in a more sustained fashion at popular eateries.
If you have access to it, I know there's a [govt funded?] traveling library
bus somewhere in the state.
Collecting adequate cash deposits for books would keep the system safe.

Wider access would grow the remit of the library, through Second hand book
collection drives, reading events, etc

Best
