[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Goa Uses Anniversary to Reimagine Itself (Naresh Fernandes, in NYT)
http://india.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/16/goa-uses-anniversary-to-reimagine-itself/ Goa Uses Anniversary to Reimagine Itself By NARESH FERNANDES An old stone fort in Goa built by the Portuguese, in this 1927 file photo. Five decades ago on Sunday, India's armed forces marched into Goa to dislodge the Portuguese from the tiny, palm-fringed colony the European power had continued to hold on to 14 years after much of the rest of the subcontinent had been freed from British rule. Starting this week, India's smallest state will mark 50 years of democracy with a series of public concerts, a photo exhibition about its independence struggle, the laying of a foundation stone for a memorial to the 22 Indian soldiers who died in the 36-hour operation and the inauguration of a restored 16th-century fort. -- Associated Press Portuguese prisoners of war, captured during the invasion of Goa by Indian military forces, at the military barracks in Panjim, in this Dec. 28, 1961 file photo. -- The celebrations come at a time when Goa is in another period of transition. I think that there is a new Goa that's emerging, said Peter Ronald deSouza, the director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, who is among the organizers of a conference examining Goa. For 40 years, the idea of Goa was based on its history, its ecology and its diaspora. Now, it's being redefined as a holiday destination for travelers. DeSouza's seminar, which is organized by the Indian Institute for Advanced Study, Goa University and Portugal's Coimbra University, will take a long view of the effects of liberation -- or the Indian invasion, as the event was termed in much of the Western press, including The New York Times. The celebrations will also be given a more serious edge by the Goa Arts and Literary Festival, which will feature several writers of Goan origin from around the world. (Full disclosure: I'm participating in the festival, too.) The program also includes the release of several books relating to Goa's past and future. These rather introspective events are somewhat at odds with the place Goa occupies in the imagination of much of India. During the past decade, fueled by Bollywood films shot in the state, many Indians have come to view Goa as a beach resort sloshing with cheap liquor, where the locals, who always dress sharp because of the legacy of their Portuguese-tinged history, do little more than loll around in the sun all day, looking cool. It's an image that irritates Goans -- and which they are keen to dispel. Many Indians see Goa as a state that's always having fun all the time, but there's much more to it than the postcard impressions, said Nandini Sahai, the director of the International Center Goa, which is hosting the arts and literary festival. People here love to read -- in English, Hindi, Konkani, Marathi and Portuguese. Every second person I meet seems to be a writer, poet or artist. With the 50th year of liberation, we thought it was the perfect time to showcase this aspect of Goa. The state's 451 years of colonial rule -- among the longest anywhere in the world -- have long fascinated social scientists. Goa interests me because its political and cultural history is so radically different from that of British India, said the historian Ramachandra Guha, whose book, India After Gandhi, contains a detailed section about the Goa freedom struggle. The Goan experience of nationalism and colonialism was largely unknown outside Goa, and hence, I thought, worth writing about at some length. That's among the subjects that will be discussed at the conference Mr. deSouza is helping organize, entitled, Goa: 1961 and Beyond. Goa offers social scientists the opportunity to study what happens when the stay of a colonial power is of a huge duration and in such a small geography, Mr. deSouza said. The Portuguese influence was, as can be imagined, incredibly complex. Many scholars have written about the conversions to Catholicism the European nation brought in, and of the horrors of the Inquisition that followed. But the interaction between Portugal and India also produced vibrant cultural hybrids in architecture, music and food. Among the state's most famous dishes is the spicy vindaloo, a curry whose name is thought to be a contraction of the Portuguese phrase vinho de alho, or garlic wine. Besides, as Mr. deSouza pointed out, Goa was where the influence of the Enlightenment and the Renaissance in Europe was felt much before it reached other parts of India. As a result, the practice of sati -- or widows immolating themselves on their husbands' funeral pyres -- was abolished in Goa 200 years before the British banned it in the

Re: [Goanet] International Conference on 'GOA 1961 AND BEYOND' - A Citizen Oriented Report
Citizens of Goa staged a SILENT protest at the Inaugural function of the International Conference on 'Goa 1961 and Beyond' held at the University of Goa today, 18 Dec 2011 to mark the celebrations of 50 years of Goa's so called Liberation from the Portuguese. In all around 20 citizens of Goa wearing black armbands and collar plaques occupied prominent middle row seats of the auditorium and ga...ve standing applause to the various speakers, not for their delivery but to attract attention of the audience. This was noted very well by all and sundry. Later the members of the protest group mixed with the delegates during refreshments and exchanged views and answered questions. The protest was about not having been liberated at all but of one weaker colonial power having been replaced by a stronger colonial power. This fact was admitted by the Director or the Combra University, Portugal himself (photo) when he was talking about colonialism in general and observed that people get to be made fools of in most cases. His was a very eloquent address and was much appreciated by the protesting group. The Director was so happy to note the protest that he took his picture along with the protestors in the auditorium before dispersing after the inaugural session for refreshments. [Goanet] Sonia Gandhi in Goa – Part II (Report with video II)
Sonia Gandhi in Goa – Part II (Report with video II) Updated blog: http://joegoauk-pointofview.blogspot.com/2011/12/sonia-gandhi-in-goa-171211.html The meeting was to start at 4.30pm at Campal grounds but Sonia Gandhi along with the dignitaries arrive at 5.30pm. There were people sitting on the chairs as early as 3.30 pm (hot sun). At 3.45pm, I started taking some pics of the emply or deserted DB road but I was stopped by the police who were in goups on both side of the road. I asked ‘konn Deu or Laxmi eupachi asa re he vatte?” they had no answer. I went little further and started taking pics and no one said anything this time. Saw people walking from St. Inez Fire Service area which was the dropping point (by bus as announced) from there, the distance to the venue is about 1 KM. When approached the Junction opp Bal Bhavan, people had to walk further about 350 meters as the only entry gate was towards Panjim Gymkana. At around 5 pm, saw people coming in large numbers, that is when they changed their ‘dropping point’ plan. People now dropped off right at the Entrance gate (D B ROAD). The Road which was empty all this time, suddenly is full of busses including luxury buses and many ST buses. More and more people coming in around 5.30pm as if they knew Sonia will arrive by an hour late. Sonia Gandhi arrived at 5.30pm at the venue but people continue pouring in. There were upto 10 gates with metal detectors but it seems they could not cope up with the rush. Subash Shirodkar GPCC chief, started his welcome speech at around 5.40pm but more and more people seen coming in (as if they were held up somewhere..). Chief Minister Digambar Kamat Started his speech at around 5.46pm followed by Sonia Gandhi at 5.54pm but people still coming in from the main gate DB Road Side. About 5000-7000 people had to stay out of the barricaded area either beacuse there was no room inside or the security could not cope up with the rush. Sonia finished her speech at 6.07pm which was followed by Mauvin Godinho vote of thanks. The whole Sonia Gandhi event lasted for about 40 minutes only as everything got over at 6.10pm May were hoping High Command Sonia Gandhi would come with some goodies for Goa at least we thought she would announced something on ‘Goa’s special Status’ which is the long pending demand of the Goans. But going by the event proceedings, it appears that Sonia was not aware of it at all as she did say something which was in response to Chief Minister request in his speech. She said, she would put the issue before her government in Delhi. Also, CM requested 3 bridges including Zuari bridge as if this is the only time he meet Sonia Gandhi. And for her mention of Goa elections ‘in couple of months’ many press/media taken it as a hint or Goa declaration, as if we did not know about it earlier. Couple of months could mean anything between 2-5 months. 5 months from now i.e. May 2012 when the current tenure of the Goa Assembly comes to an end. After releasing the tricolour balloons in the air, there start Kunbi dace lead by Amelia (see video2) The stage which was situated to the right of the boxed dais (enclosed all 3 sides), I don’t think anyone from the box could see the stage. Check video2. School kid were sitting in the open hot sun forming no. ‘50’ facing the dais or which was meant for the dignitaries only. Media people in the middle also seen out in the sun waiting Sonia Gandhi impatiently from as early as 4pm or even earlier. Free goodies like caps with Sonia-Raul pics on it (see pic), Free Audio CDs with CM pic on it see pic (cd by Sidharnath Buyao of 8 songs. singers also include Nephi Rod, Swapnil Bandodkar), free Congress logo long scarves etc were give to all, plus free water bottles. We did not get no water no meals, we had cold lassie at the nearby kiosk on DB Road, opp entrance gate. Rs.12 each. However, there are unconfirmed reports including on twitter that free money and meals also given per person, not at the venue though or else we would have joined the Q too. If that is true, then I guess it is perfectly normal now a days with all parties. I call it ‘tricks of the trade’ for I know for facts, it happened in the past with other parties including NCP. Konkani songs by Peter-Roshan, Sonia Shirsat etc were also sung before 5.30pm. Added in video2 There was also a folk dance ‘Veer Bhadra’. We had a laugh when CM said ‘ temporary (Beach) shacks’ we thought we heard it as ‘temporary sex’ watch video2 As the whole thing got ever at 6.10pm, firework display which started soon after, did not really look like firework as it was a day time. See video2 Finally, with Congress caps, flags in their hands, scarves around their necks, the speeches etc etc it did look like an election rally, Madam Sonia too in the end solicited support from the people to bring Congress back to power. Again, I would say these are all

Every year about this time we get to witness the ritual of blaming others for our problems and the casting of slurs against India and other Indians. These tired old useless rants are invariably great hits with a significant proportion of the readership, presumably because of ignorance, prejudice or false sense of pride. Neither the factual nor the counter-factual assumption for the argument that we would be better off as an independent enclave in India or as a colony of a foreign country has any basis in reality. Reality for most Goans is that in most respects as they relate to individual lives we are better off today than we were 50 years ago. Reality also is that it is we who have governed ourselves for the last 48 years, and are primarily responsible for all the moral, social and environmental problems that we have created in Goa. Re: [Goanet] Goa - 50 years of colonization (Part II)
To Goanet - For Part 1, go here - For my first post on this topic, see - http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2011-December/216487.html Part II Expectedly, the hogwash about Goa at 50 has started oozing from all quarters of the Indian media. For instance, this by Rajdeep Sardesai - http://ibnlive.in.com/blogs/rajdeepsardesai/1/62999/rajdeep-sardesai-is-goa-losing-its-sheen.html Notice that he starts off with a weasel title. Anybody who knows anything about Goa knows the answer to his question - that Goa is now a slummy swamp, much like the rest of India. But the following brainburp by Rajdeep caught my eye: To see Goa as an unchanging rural idyll would be to do disservice to an increasingly aspirational society. Goa cannot be confined to a picture perfect postcard where 'susegado' (or relaxed, timeless fun in Konkani) remains its calling card. This has now become a standard line, mostly used by outsiders who want to justify their own 'contribution' to Goa's burden. Others will then repeat this nonsense as if it is a piece of insightful wisdom. It is especially sad to see it coming from someone of Goan origin. First of all, why can't Goa continue to be a rural idyll? I can cite several rural idylls around the world that have done well economically, have all the modern conveniences, but continue to retain their past landscape, charm, and culture. The truth is, INDIA WON'T LET GOA REMAIN AN IDYLL, RURAL OR OTHERWISE. But saying this is not politically fruitful, for only the Goans will agree with this sentiment, and who gives a damn about what Goans actually think and want for Goa? All this is, is a clever attempt to discredit those Goans who protest the Indian assault by painting them as romantics living in the past, presumably without any aspirational goals. Furthermore, as I have written in posts past, the Goa must change with the times line is a convenient cliché to mask reality. Goa has changed, yes, but this change is more accurately described by another word: DECAY. Decay is also change. Does this change that you advertise have the consent of the majority of Goans? Where did YOU get the right to impose your version of change on Goa? Oh I get it, Indians always have rights - the right to grab, the right to piss, the right to sh*t anywhere anytime. The other example I have is by Naresh Fernandes. http://india.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/16/goa-uses-anniversary-to-reimagine-itself/ He gives a quote from one Nandini Sahai about Goans : Every second person I meet seems to be a writer, poet or artist. See what I meant earlier about puffing up the Goans' ego via flattery? Sahai does not even try to be subtle about it. This is what passes for Indian writing today. I am always amused by the gaggle of brown toadies that the Western media unfailingly turns to to explain India (in this instance, Goa). It helps if you have done janitorial duty at one of the Oxbridge campuses (extra points if you have taken a dump on Hindus at some point). Names that come to mind - Rushdie, Amitava Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Pankaj Mishra, and suchlike (*). Folks who have their tongue hanging out to lap up that next crumb tossed by the white master - the Booker, the Nobel (in Rushdie's case), and so on. It is sad to see someone presumably of Goan origin peddle this hogwash. (*) Read Richard Crasta's Impressing the Whites for more on this topic. I now leave you with this video made by Dr. Kamat, that is both a literal and a metaphorical statement on today's Goa. Anybody came come in, pitch his tent, and foul the nest, no questions asked - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jK1UfegecNQlr=1 Regards, r --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Freedom Thoughts
An edited version has appeared on the opinion page of OHeraldo. I am surprised that the column is titled, Impending Gloom. I only asked the question and further stated that Goans are unsure what the dawn of each will bring into their lives. I had also sent the editor a photo, but it didn't appear. eugene - Freedom Thoughts By Eugene Correia If the sunrise over Goa's horizon on December 19, 1961 brought hope and expectations, does the daily sunrise brings in rays of gloom? On the occasion of Goa's 50th year of Liberation, Goans are unsure what the dawn of each day will bring into their lives. Goan society is divided into groups of optimists, pessimists and the unconcerned. Crosswinds are blowing across the land and Goa is in a state of upheaval -- emotionally, politically, culturally and economically. Metaphorically speaking, the land is swaying like its famed coconut trees in storms. Goans are desperately looking for answers that could be blowing in the wind. Just like India made its tryst with destiny in 1947, Goa made its tryst with India 50 years ago. India broke its colonial shackles on the fateful day of August 15, 1947 and Goa woke up to its freedom on December 19, 1961. India was embedded into British colonialism and Goa was an appendice in Portugal's body. Goa, the Portuguese pride called Estado da India, was an illusion for Goan nationalists who saw it as Salazar's strategy to safeguard Goa for Portugal. Freedom came but not how Goans would want it -- peaceful and serene. It also never came as many wished - handed to Goans as their own nation-state. It came with fireworks of Indian army rifles and thunder of Indian Air Force planes. The noise was enough to wake up slumbering Goa to a new day. Goans with Portuguese heartbeats probably felt that the sounds from blazing guns were the death-knells of Goa as they knew it and lived it. Many such Goans still feel the trembling noises in their bones. The very thought of Goa celebrating its freedom makes such Goans go into nostalgic hibernation. They find it hard to shake off their feelings for Portugal, their fatherland, and all things Portuguese, be it food, fado or football. It was an age in which such Goans, especially the elite, enjoyed the privileges that came from their social status. While some still wear their sympathies on their sleeves, many still remain shell-shocked. Those who cry Portuguese tears may be doing so in seeing Goa in a different hue than those with Indian eyes, which probably has tears of joy rolling from them on Goa's celebration of its greatest moment of history. The Goa of pre-liberation days was definitely different than now. During Portuguese regime, Goa remained frozen in time. No doubt the pristine beauty was intact as well as law-and-order conditions strictly enforced, unlike today. Freedom has its price and Goans have paid - and still paying - for being independent of colonialism. Critics may harp that Goa has moved from one type of colonialism into another, the latter meaning Indian rule or rather rule from New Delhi. In more than one way, Goans are their own masters. Goans choose their own government and how the government behaves and what it achieves or fails to achieve is what the Goans get in return in a democratic setup. At least Goans have a voice, unlike being voiceless under the colonial yoke. Nevertheless, the central or main leaderships of national parties influence their branches in Goa and in other states. Goa came under one of its regional parties, the Maharashtra Gomantak Party (MGP), and the party spurted Goa's economic and social development. In its early stages, Goa progressed marginally from being a import-oriented economy to an export-oriented or manufacturing economy. The economic environment has changed drastically. Whatever progress has been achieved so far should make Goans proud, though Goans would have wanted development at a rapid pace. Goa's steady rise among the smaller states has not gone unnoticed, and it is for reason of its prosperity that Goa enjoys high-capita income among all states. Aligned to this is Goa's trouble-free social landscape that encourages outsiders to set up homes and businesses. No wonder Goa makes it to the top five as the best places in India to live. Tourism, which has helped and shaped Goan economy, should be further promoted. Despite creating some ill-effects, tourism can remain one of the engines that drives Goan economy. But tourism needs to be watched for uncontrolled growth, just as mining is now keenly monitored and action taken, though belated, against erring companies. The Brand Goa slogan should not be over-utilized to market Goa in ways that could be detrimental to Goa's socio-economic health - and image. The Goa Dourado of Portuguese fame is now famously transformed itself into a model of voyeuristic delight, be it through escort services or massage parlours. Exotic Goa should not be end up being sexed-up Goa. No doubt the tourism and

(An extract from my book: “SIMPLY MY WAY”) www.bennetpaes.com Quote: From the days of Mahatma Gandhi’s tryst with freedom, one prerequisite to be a ‘freedom fighter’ came to be accepted as a short adventure in an Indian jail. Critics then called it a ‘picnic inprison’. On the other hand, Portuguese jails were far removed from the romance of a Presley’s ‘Jailhouse Rock’. They were exactly what lawbreakers deserved to be in. Discipline was what they exacted out of an erring ‘rocker’, and the stick did the trick. Nevertheless, having been influenced by Gandhi’s struggle for freedom, a path hugely accentuated by his courtship with prison-cells, some Goan machos also developed an appetite for ‘freedom of sorts’, although what was under suspicion was their determination to fight for it. They tried to emulate the great Mahatma in so far as his sit-in’s were concerned. But his fasts-unto-death dreaded them as death itself. The group that I came to be associated with, would hardly miss a morsel for any cause on earth, least of allfreedom. Much credit goes to those Goans who put their lives on the block in their pursuit of freedom. However, what became debatable to right thinking men and women in Goa was, whether their motive was to oust one occupier and make way for another; or to take over the reins themselves and let the U.N. declare an addition to the family of nations. But soon their intentions were laid bare. Jawaharlal Nehru’s‘Operation Vijay’ sealed the fate of Goans forever. Unquote. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Christmas Day
18-Dec-2011 Dear Friend, We know from experience that we are most relaxed and comfortable when we feel at home with people, situations and events. Christmas is a 'homely' feast, God being at home with us. The name given to him is Emmanuel -God-with-us! Are we 'at home' with God? To be at home with us, God comes to us not in power and glory but in the guise of a frail little child. We can only meet God and enjoy his presence if we approach him as little children - trusting and believing, looking beyond and finding Him! Have a wonderful Christmas being at home with the God of small things and small people! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Christmas Midnight Mass-Looking beyond and finding Him! 25-Dec-2011 Isaiah 9: 2-4, 6-7 Titus 2: 11-14 Luke 2: 1-16 Today's first reading from Isaiah reminds us that Christmas is a feast of light. No matter how dark it is, the darkness cannot shut off the light. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness, on them a light has shone. The way God scatters the darkness is by letting 'a child be born for us, a son is given to us.' God reveals himself as the light not through power but through a small frail weak child. Night time is usually a time of terror, a time of fear, a time of evil, but this night is different. It is a holy night, a night made divine by the presence of God in our midst. May this night be filled with the light of love given and love received, reflecting in our own lives the love of God, who entered our story with the birth of his son Jesus Christ. The Light of Hope The Christmas image of Jesus is that of a light shining in the darkness. This image took on a remarkable meaning for Viktor Frankl, a Nazi prisoner in World War II. One morning, very early, he and some other prisoners were digging in the cold, hard ground. Frankl writes in Man's Search for Meaning: The dawn was gray around us; gray was the sky above; gray the snow in the pale light of dawn; gray the rags in which my fellow prisoners were clad, and gray their faces. I was struggling to find a reason for my sufferings, my slow dying. As Frankl struggled in the miserable cold to make sense of his suffering, suddenly he became totally convinced that there was a reason, even though he didn't fully comprehend it. Frankl describes what happened then: At that moment a light was lit in a distant farmhouse, which stood on the horizon as if it were painted there, in the mist of the miserable gray. At that moment, there flashed into Frankl's mind the words of today's gospel: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out. Frankl says that experience radically changed his entire prison life. It gave him hope, where before he had only despair. Mark Link in 'Sunday Homilies' In today's gospel Luke begins the most sublime story of God's entry into the world with the names of the greatest figures of that time, Emperor Augustus and Governor Quirinius, side by side with two very simple people Joseph and Mary setting out for an insignificant town in Palestine, Bethlehem, in obedience to the decree requiring them to register in their hometown. Mary and Joseph make themselves available for God's coming into the world through their act of obedience though it inconveniences them. So often God's time is not our time and so we miss his coming. The story of Christ's birth started with the high and mighty but the children of Israel who are invited to come to the manger are not the high and mighty but simple shepherds who are summoned from their flocks. The shepherds listen and believe and set out to see for themselves the wonderful event that has taken place. Their faith helps them to believe and journey to the manger. Everyone's life is a journey of faith. We cannot let our faith rest on someone else's life. We have to believe and journey in faith to discover God. Today's message of the birth of Jesus brings about a reversal of the value system of the world. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. God does not come in power and strength but in humility and weakness as a helpless child. God who created this world does not find a home in it. 'He came unto his own and his own received him not'. Mary and Joseph have to leave home and find a place in a stable so that God Emmanuel might be at home with us. Jesus becomes one like us so that we might become like God. Finding Christmas This is the essence of the Christmas message and experience. The almighty God who keeps all creation in the palm of his hand, steps beyond that role and out of love, sends his only Son to share our human life. He does it so that we will experience energizing and reassuring love in the fiber of our beings. Stepping out beyond the expected, love was made real for the whole human race at the first Christmas. So it

[Goanet] We gained liberation but lost our identity (oHERALDO)
* http://74.127.61.178/herald/Details.aspx?id=2953boxid=174850390uid=dat=12/19/2011 * *We gained liberation but lost our identity* Dear Goans and all those who truly love Goa from the bottom of their hearts, a lot has been said, read and heard about our almost 500 year tryst with history. We do salute our freedom fighters and initiate a huge carnival of celebration. But as the Indian Goa turns fifty you can’t help but realise that anyone under fifty in Goa- actually under sixty- wouldn’t have experienced Goa on Portuguese soil. And as the average age of a Goan is going down, we have a majority of us who have little or no experience of living as citizens of the foreign land on what is now our home soil. The Goa of today is not about the past or present. It is a confluence of shared cultures. The chicken cafreal is a good example. Brought from Mozambique – a Portuguese colony, and then spiced up to suit local tastes, it’s a fine example of what culture confluence does. This is simplistic but this is what it is. The Goa- Portuguese experience is that of seamless confluence and that still lasts. It’s unfortunate that our real area of concern lies elsewhere and that hasn’t been addressed with any degree of seriousness. It lies in the loss of our identity as Goans, as different from Portuguese Goans or Indian Goans. The Goan model or way of life was ingrained in the DNA of every Goan and this goes beyond conquest, invasion or liberation Former Portuguese President General Ramalho Eanes, who served in Goa as a lieutenant, in an interview to a Portuguese periodical three years ago said “ Goa was an historic and political micro cosmos, distinguished and different. Goa had its own cultural personality. Goa could have been not the Portuguese State of India but The State of Goa ( independent)” This conclusion was reached, because of the Goan way of life, its community system, it’s principle of sharing of resources and the role of the communidade to preside over and deal with all matters of land. Every- one knew each other far more than what they do now. There were no gated communities, there was just one community of brotherhood in a village. In Calangute, if there was a fire noticed on a coconut tree, people from far would know, whose tree it was and run to douse it. There was honesty and openness. Homes would always be open and children were brought up by the village. Most of the agitations of today have their roots in the issue if identity, about the losing character of the villages. The Portuguese may be blamed on various counts, genuinely or otherwise, but what their greatest gift to Goa, was that they let the essence of Goa be, at least far as living memory goes. And the Indian of today which is also the Goa of today is letting that essence rot. Goa now needs to be liberated from a trap which has caged its identity to the point of making it disappear. Fifty years later, liberation may be just a dot in the collective consciousness of those who live then. There won’t be fist hand accounts anymore, not even second hand accounts perhaps. But if we get back the Goa that once was, we would have done much good to our land and its culture which we are ravaging by the Day. [Goanet] MANY REASONS WHY GOANS FEEL GOA IS NOT LIBERATED BUT RE-COLONIZED BY INDIA
THIS MAY BE CONSIDERED AS THE RAISING OF THE MANY BLACK FLAGS ON THIS GOA'S 19TH. DAY OF DECEMBER, 2011 Apart from the promises of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru since 1954 that Goans shall not be 'coerced to join the Indian Union against their wishes, the following many reasons support the feelings of Goans that Goa has never been liberated on 19th December, 1961, the way they are made to believe but re-colonized by India, being the stronger colonizer than the erstwhile Portuguese. Goa would have been truly LIBERATED IF:- 1. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had kept his solemn promise as given in 1954/1956 in Kanpur/Mumbai Quote I want to explain myself. If the people of Goa, that is, minus the Portuguese Government - if and when the Portuguese go and the people of Goa deliberately wish to retain their separate identity - I am not going to bring them by force or compulsion or coercion into the Indian Union. I merely say that my national interest involves the removal of the Portuguese from Goa, not coercion being used in bringing about the union of Goa with India, although I wish it, I desire it and it is the only solution. That is a matter ultimately for the people of Goa to decide. I want to make it perfectly clear that I have no desire to coerce Goa to join India against the wishes of the people of Goa. But the point is that we feel that Goa's individuality should remain and that whenever the time comes for any changes, internal or other, it will be for the people of Goa acting freely to decide upon them. Unquote 2. Plebiscite was ordered soon after the Portuguese were taken off from Goa for Goans to decide what they wanted. 3. The Indian Navy had handed-over the Dabolim civilian airport to Goa's civilian authorities and left. 4. The many Portuguese mining leases were cancelled. 5. Goa was extended the real 'Special Status' on the lines of Nagaland and other smaller States. 6. Indira Gandhi had remembered her father's promises to Goa and Goans and not sanctioned the Opinion Poll of 1967 for Goa's Merger with Maharashtra. 7. Goa's fake freedom fighters like Naguesh Karmali were struck off the FF's list to save tax-payer's hard-earned money going down the drain to support thugs and thugery. Conscious Goans may add more to the above list at will Floriano Lobo Gen.
