The Mocidade Portuguesa (English: Portuguese Youth) was a Portuguese
youth organization under the right-wing regime of the Estado Novo.
Membership was compulsory between the ages of 7 and 14, and voluntary
until the age of 25.
Founded in 1936 by Tiago Franco, it was originally inspired upon the
model of the Italian Fascist Opera Nazionale Balilla and the Nazi
Hitler Youth. However, in 1940 the Germanophile National Secretary
Francisco Nobre Guedes was replaced by the Anglophile Marcelo Caetano,
who gave the organization a different own orientation, withdrawing
from the Hitler Youth and abandoning its paramilitary feature,
approaching to the Catholic Church and other youth organizations as
the Scout Movement.[1]
It was dissolved in 1974, after the Carnation Revolution, being
considered at that time as a Fascist organization.

[Goanet] Ranes, Alemaos and Monserrates, could control 19 constituencies

2012-02-13 Thread Sandeep Heble
Ranes, Alemaos and Monserrates, could control 19 constituencies

2012-02-13
There are so many disgruntled Congressmen flouncing out, resigning
from the party and standing as Independent candidates. They are doing
this for two reasons. Since the Congress will not be funding their
campaign, all they will do is play spoiler for the Congress. If they
win, they will definitely rejoin the Congress as did Vishwajit Rane,
Churchill Alemao, Reginald Lourenco and Babush Monserrate in the
fullness of time, using the rejoining as an opportunity to drive home
a good bargain. If they stand to lose and only play spoiler, eating
into the votebase of the Congress party, they could bargain with the
Congress to withdraw from the hustings at a price. Right now
everything is in a state of flux, with both Congress and BJP.

Vijay Pai Khot is feeling like all kinds of a fool after leaving the
BJP and joining Congress. The Congress waited till he joined them,
strung him along with the promise of a ticket and then gave it to
Isidore Fernandes who is being promoted by Babush Monserrate. Pai Khot
is now caught between a rock and a hard place.

Vijai Sardesai who was certain he was going to get the Congress ticket
in Fatorda found to his dismay his ticket given to M K Shaikh. Now he
is warning Goans of the dangers of a few families of the Congress
taking over the state. He is going to stand as an Independent.

About the few families taking over the state is a real and present
danger. The Rane duo of Pratapsing and Vishwajit will have control
over 8 constituencies if their protegees win. The Alemaos will have
four constituencies, maybe five is Reginaldo wins. Monserrate will
have Mayem if Rudresh Chodankar wins, Canacona if Isidore Fernandes
wins, Taleigao, if his wife wins, Cumbharjua if Pandurang Madkaikar
wins, Priol if Madkaikar's brother Dhaku wins and the Santa Cruz
constituency if he wins. That is six constituencies. 19 seats between
the Monserrates, Ranes and Alemaos.

Now Goa's fate lies in the hands of the voters. Literally.

Subject: [Goanet] Save Goa from Self-centered Politicians

The Congress High Command has apparently given the 'Supari' of Panjim
constituency seat to Babush. Babush is expected to receive hundreds if
not thousands of crores of rupees as part of the bargain in the
process. Hundreds and thousands of crores because that is the price
Goa will have to pay for the destruction of fields, agriculture,
landscapes, greenery and every square inch of land were he to succeed
in his evil and nefarious designs. Despite being severely indicted in
the IT Report for large scale land conversions, Babush has managed to
have his way with the high command and has secured a sizeable number
of Assembly tickets for himself and his larger family which includes
his wife and quite a few of his other cronies. The Panaji Assembly
ticket has gone to his hand-picked Mayor Yatin Parekh, an elected
representative who in the last 6 years - first as a Deputy and now as
Mayor of the CCP - has allowed a beautiful city to rot and
deteriorate. Who has allowed all sorts of scams and frauds and
illegalities to persist and thrive in the CCP. Who has treated the
city in a step motherly manner by diverting funds meant for the
beautification and development of the capital city for the benefit and
welfare of Taleigao. The Monserrates and the Ranes and the Alemaos are
all set to capture the reigns of our beautiful state and Goa will be
gone forever were we not to vote decisively against them and all their
other cronies in the forthcoming Assembly Elections. Goa must be saved
and your vote can make a difference. Will you?

[Goanet] Why this Kolaveri di on family raj?

2012-02-13 Thread SOTER
Goa's politics lay captured for 50 years by caste dynasty politics that has
only resulted in Goa's decadence while the few raped and looted. These rotten
politicians were groomed by this very caste dynasty that remote controlled
politics in Goa. Now that controls are feared to be slipping out from their
hands they are inciting Goans against the new family raj. It's all about one
beggar envying another. Can Goans not see who has actually looted the state in
proxy by installing thugs and extortionists in power. Why all this Kolaverri di

[Goanet] Goan Character Test - 3rd March 2012

2012-02-13 Thread Arwin Mesquita
3rd March 12 will go down in Goan History as the true character test for
Goans. Will we be true to our respective religious teachings in temples,
churches, mosques and vote out the Anti Goans tainted with corruption, all
sorts of criminality, destruction of environment, smuggling, drugs trade,
prostitution etc. Will we vote and use our vote wisely and not succumb to
money, favours etc from the politicians/families using funds from
corruption? Will we think of the future of our children and our beautiful
land. What do you want to be proud off; Trying to save Goa and our society
or be part of its destruction? Are our votes so cheap that we can be taken
for granted by those politicians, now bringing in their wives, daughters
sons, so as to worsen the pathetic state of Governance in Goa. Goans our
future is in our hands, take a courageous stand on 3rd March 2012. I will
be in Goa specially on this day to Vote for Goa, what will you do?

[Goanet] keith vaz's wrong step

2012-02-13 Thread Eugene Correia
Has the British MP Keith Vaz lost his political bearings? He is in
India to repair the India-Britain relationship and he should be doing
just that. Instead, he is in Goa and unnecessarily getting involved in
local politics. What was the need to go to Valanka Alemao's election
campaign and give his vote for her? I feel Vaz would lose lot of
goodwill that Goans in Goa are having for him.
With so much political knowledge and experience, Keith should have kep
away from playing partisan politics. He has bigger issues to tackle on
the India-Britain front instead of giving his valuable time to support
certain candidates, or perhaps just Valanka. If he is in Goa for a
brief holiday, then he should be resting.
Shocking indeed, to say the least.

[Goanet] Mathany's time to shed religious barriers

2012-02-13 Thread SOTER
What a display from Mathany of political opportunism and selfishness? The
common people have no religious barriers. It is politicians who install
barriers and remove them depending on their politicial convenience and
requirements. Shedding religious barriers is about unconditional respect for
the human rights of citizens from other faiths. It cannot be achieved by covert
manipulations towards one nation with one religion, one language and one
culture. English taught at primary level in Bhatikar's Model English School
cannot be considered patriotic while the same English being taught at primary
level in diocesan schools becomes anti-national. Mathany first needs to uproot
those religious barriers solidly installed within the BJP before advising the
public. Giving party tickets to christians in non-BJP dominated bastions is
about political convenience and opportunism but not necessarily respect for
other faiths.

Re: [Goanet] keith vaz's wrong step

2012-02-13 Thread Eugene Correia
After I posted my view on Keith Vaz, I read his interview on Navhind
Times. Here is one question he answers:
--
Q: Are you aware of the upcoming assembly elections?

A: Yes, but I don’t want to get into it. That is because, as an
individual with links to this place, and also a regular visitor, I
know a lot of people here. The people who are standing in politics are
also known to me personally. So, no getting into that.
---
So my questions to Keith Vaz are

Which devil made you go against your decision and be present at
Valanka's meeting? Does he not seem like you are endorsing her?

Seems like Keith is a true politician who eats his own words.

[Goanet] Goa and the Challenge of the New - Amitav Ghosh

Goa and the Challenge of the New

February 12, 2012

[This is an edited version of an address delivered in Panjim, Goa, on
the 50th anniversary of the events that led to Goa’s incorporation
into the Indian union, in December 1961.]

It is truly an extraordinary privilege for me to be here today, with
so many friends, old and new. It is a privilege particularly because
this is, as we know, a special moment for Goa – the 50th anniversary
of a very significant event in its history, an event that marked the
end of an era that began before the arrival of the Mughals and lasted
until modern times.

As someone who spends a lot of time daydreaming about history I often
wonder about the unrealized possibilities that lie embedded in the
past. What would have happened for example, if the Portuguese
dictator, Salazar, had seen the writing on the wall and granted Goa
its independence in the 1950s? Would that independence have then
become a fait accompli, establishing Goa as in independent nation? Or
was the post-independence euphoria of that time so strong that Goa
would have been pulled into the Indian orbit anyway, either through a
Sikkim-style annexation, or perhaps even by its own accord, through a
popular vote? The latter may seem like an unlikely possibility today,
but the 1950s and 60s were a different moment in time – a moment when
Egypt voted for union with Syria, and Kuwait with Iraq.

Perhaps a better question is: what difference would it have made?
Would there have been less corruption, less construction, less mining
in Goa today if Salazar had taken that fateful step?

In the public commemoration of history certain dates are treated as if
they represented absolute and irreversible breaks with the past. But
history is a mighty river and its course is not easily changed. Within
the Indian subcontinent certain patterns and continuities seem to
persist irrespective of boundaries, dates and disjunctions. I remember
once being taken to a hill above Kathmandu. The valley below was a
vast lake of smog and pollution, filled with the clamour of Tata
trucks, Tempos and three-wheelers. I remember thinking: Nepal didn’t
need to go down this path; it’s a different country isn’t it? Why
didn’t they choose a better way? I remember my first visit to
Pakistan. From the air the outskirts of Lahore looked exactly like the
suburbs of New Delhi. The airport was no different either; the walls
had the same paan-stains and there was the same pervasive smell of
urine. I said to myself: But they embraced free-market capitalism
while in India we were socialists of some kind. Why do so many things
look the same in spite of that?

One thing that unites the Indian subcontinent is that we make many of
the same mistakes: another is that certain traits endure. Our tastes,
our injustices, our eccentricities – they endure in every corner of
this landmass. Yet, even as they endure they are refracted into
startlingly different configurations. There is an analogy here with
Indian classical music. The notes of a raga are always the same, yet
its realization is always unique, unrepeatable: the music exists only
in the moment, in improvisation.

Of no part of the subcontinent is this more true than of Goa. When I
look around me here I see things that are distantly familiar, from
Bengal or Kerala or North India – and yet something is elusive; there
are elements from places far beyond our horizons; there is always
something surprising, something new.

I remember the first time I encountered the familiar Goan gesture of
greeting, where, after shaking your hand people will touch their
fingertips to their hearts. I was astonished – for this seems to me a
quintessentially Arab gesture. And indeed the Arab world is everywhere
in Goa – it is after all, only on the other side of the pond. The taxi
driver who brought me here tonight speaks Arabic; sometimes we use it
as a secret language. In Panjim I have heard young Goans arguing with
each other in Arabic – they had perhaps grown up in the Gulf. Here is
something at once very old and very new.

Nothing is more difficult to recognize than the new; and nowhere is it
more difficult to recognize it than in Goa, where the past has such a
weighty presence. We know very well, from the history of modernism in
the arts, that the challenge of the new is often met with bewilderment
and anger, confusion and outrage. This history is, I think, repeating
itself in relation to Goa: it seems to me that in this instance the
anxiety of the new has given birth to something that might be called a
narrative of dystopia.

There are many strands to this narrative. One is a prelapsarian strand
and it is woven largely by Goans themselves – or at least by those who
look back in longing upon one or the other of many pasts. In
comparison with those lost Edens the Goa of today seems irretrievably
fallen: it is difficult to see anything of value in its present
aspect. Another strand is

[Goanet] British MP (Keith Vaz) Campaigning for Corrupt Congress

2012-02-13 Thread SOTER
Well done Keith! If NRIs who do not understand the real root of the problems in
Goa can insist on promoting a divisive and distractive agenda of casteist and
corporate dynasty, then Keith Vaz is within his right to support the Alemao
family or o called Family dynasty. If some can inist that corruption, family
rule and mining are the major problems, then other Goans are also within their
right to believe that communal and casteist politics is more important. It has
become a business for some to go round in circles and deviate attention from
Goa's real problems to popular propaganda without caring to sit down and
analyse issues closely.

Dear Petronella,

I am shocked that you should write such an inflammatory article about a
state like Delhi ruled by Kangress party. Could you not find a state ruled
by that horrible BJP and claim that all this crime was against minorities.
Have you forgotten that there are elections to be held in goa next month.
Next time you write such non sense, do consult Marshall Mendoza or Teesta.
In Goa, we have Kangress government. We should rejoice and be happy that

[Goanet] Foreigners Not Allowed To Influence Voters

2012-02-13 Thread Freddy Fernandes
Foreigners Not Allowed To Influence Voters

I was shocked to see a British parliamentarian trying to influence voters in
Goa. Does Mr Kieth Vaz hold duel citizenship ? Foreign nationals are not
allowed to influence the out come of election in another country and it is
against the UN mandate for foreigners to get involved in election of another
country. Mr Kieth Vaz has crossed his political and civil borders and should be
arrested for meddling with our election process as an outside force meddling
with our internal politics.

It is no secret that Churchill Alemao and his family has had good relations
with Mr. Kieth Vaz and may have hosted him at his residence in UK but family
relations cannot be used to influence voters of another country. There in one
very interesting common factor in the history of Kieth Vaz and that of
Churchill Alemao, they both attract controversies like fleas to stale dead fish.

British MP Kieth was under investigation for a number of controversial issues,
like the Iraqi Nadhmi Auchi extradition issue, Hinduja brothers passport issue,
the solicitor Sarosh Zaiwalla case, demanding the banning of Satanic Verses
in UK, the controversial statement in the IRA attack. In some of the above
cases he was charged with taking bribes to facilitate work. Does that sound
familiar ?

It is said that birds of the same feathers flock together so could be they are
on the path of sharing strategies of how to hoodwink the general public both in
Goa and UK. It is said that Kieth Vaz was born in Aden but his parents were of
Goan origin who then settled in UK and thank God for that or we might have had
another Churchill to deal with.

Re: [Goanet] British MP (Keith Vaz) Campaigning for Corrupt Congress

2012-02-13 Thread Eugene Correia
I don't think Keith Vaz is supporting corrupt Congress per se, but
must have been requested by Churchill to grace Valanka's meeting.
Whether he suppors family raj or dynasty raj is not known but one
must remember that Keith's sister, Valerie, is an MP too. His mother
too was a municipal councillor. Politics runs in the family. By this
logic, all those families who are in Goan politics can say that
politics run The family raj issue can swing some votes in BJP's
favour. What about BJP's alliance partnerf, MGP which also has members
of same family running in the election?
Only voters can break this trend. We have to wait and see.
Would Keith Vaz have gone to a meeting if invited by the Dr. Hubert Gomes' camp?

Re: [Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India’s temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-13 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Sandesh, I'm not so much concerned about the urge to convert
(because we're always trying to convert to people in our way of
thinking, in religious and non-religious ways -- to vegetarianism,
atheism, Free Software or whatever our cause...). But it is worrying
indeed to see the stereotyped manner in which one religion (and
cultural trend) views another, even in the 21st century.

Needless to say, bigotry is not a monopoly of Christians; but I
disagree strongly with the endeavour to judge someone else's religion
by way of stereotypes and cliches.

The report begins by saying: Prostitution is a serious problem in
India, especially among the poor. Then it talks about devadasis,
which, I suspect must today be at best a tiny part of the larger
prostitution problem in the country. Yet, such aspects are picked on
(as the British and Portuguese sometimes chose to highlight sati in
colonial times) because it suits one's ideology.

In any case, prostitution is as much of a problem (if not more) in
all parts of the globe, regardless of religious differences. Those who
dislike the Catholics will highlight the paedophilia charges against
priests, and the blame-game goes on.

If anything, this problem has not been sorted out in the so-called
Christian West either, but is taking on more modern forms of slavery
for itself FN

PS: I checked the source of the report, and it comes from some place,
if I understood right, calling itself Mission Network News
http://mnnonline.org/ which says it all. Religions have a big job in
the 21st century, of helping to create understanding among diverse
people, not creating more bitterness, as this approach seems to be
doing

PPS: Social problems need working on from within too. In Goa, the
social reform movement among the former devadasis is one of the big
untold stories of our time...

[Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India’s temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-13 Thread Carvalho
Sandesh Anvekar wrote:

Response:
First of all, I find Sandesh Anvekar's remark absolutely loathsome. No doubt,
some Goans are waiting with bated breath for the return of the BJP-ram raj so
that we can look forward to 5 years of hurt sensibilities.

Ignorance about the Church aside, I always find some comments faintly amusing.
In the Christian dominated West, these very people have no problem at all
sending their children to school where they all learn about Christ (yes, even
non-religious state schools), preform in Christmas pageants and cheerfully
dress up as Easter bunnies. It is only in India amidst a population of 1.2
billion, where 2.3% are Christians, that they feel so threatened by the Church
and so-called conversions.

It is attitudes such as these that will effectively assure India's place
perpetually in the Dark Ages. Strangely, no amount of middle-class prosperity
in India seems to be eradicating these attitudes which puts paid to the theory
that affluence and education are the best criteria for progress.

Best,

[Goanet] ST. JOSEPH’S CONVENT SCHOOL, KARACHI RE-UNION

2012-02-13 Thread Michael Ali

ST. JOSEPH’S SCHOOL RE-UNION

As St. Joseph’s School is celebrating its sesquicentennial Anniversary
(1862-1912) in March, the school has had various programmes throughout the year
marking this milestone. St. Joseph’s School Re-union was held at the school
premises on Sat. February 11, 2012 inviting all old –students who completed
school prior to 1995. Around 200 – 250 teachers, nuns and alumni attended.
Ms. Faiza Kazi was the compere for the evening. It started with Sr. Julie
Pacheco, the headmistress saying a short prayer. Sr. Margaret and Sr. Olive
each read out Reflections and then all joined in for a hymn “I thank my God”.

Two young teachers kept us entertained with songs accompanied by musicians on
the tabla, harmonium and violin. A short Power Point presentation on the
school was also presented.

As spouses were invited as well, there were a few gentlemen present, but in all
this was a ladies affair. Everyone was thrilled to meet old classmates and
teachers. Some catching up with each other after 30-40 years. News was
exchanged alongwith telephone nos. email addresses etc. and promises to keep in
touch. The oldest Josephine present was Sr. Dolores Anne who finished school
in 1941. She attended St. Joseph’s from 1932-41, and later went on to serve
many terms as Principal. There was a lucky draw on the invitation cards and a
few lucky ladies walked away with gifts baskets with Ms. Kazi winning the first
prize – dinner for two.

On entering every lady received a gift bag containing a SJC memorial mug,
Vellose’s famous milk toffees (which brought back fond memories), a cloth bag
with SJC monogram, postcards made from the paintings from the art class, a SJC
keychain and pen and the most prized possession was a placemat with the school
picture on it. During dinner one of the senior Cambridge students entertained
us with a very apt song “Yesterday Once More” by the Carpenters.

The evening closed with a prayer and a hymn led by Sr. Margaret. This was
indeed a very joyous evening and our sincere thanks go out to Sr. Julie and the
faculty of St. Josephs for putting together this event.

etc.). Just wanted to make that clear before some sensitive soul with low
self-esteem defensively writes some nonsense about critical NRGs, life in
America, etc. This is a Goa forum, hence the Goa mention.

With that in mind, the upcoming elections mean little since Goa's coffin has
already been nailed shut by the policies of the two national parties in the
last 15 years. Let the Goan corpse lie, we have disrespected the motherland
enough by raping the soil for mining and then urinating and defecating through
mega-project development.

At best now we can hope that a few ethical independents get elected to rattle
the grave and resurrect a new Goa. For some in Goa it will soon be Easter and
a religious resurrection. For all of Goa, we must remain optimistic for a
political resurrection.

George

[Goanet] Raiding priest: Why this Kolaveri..

2012-02-13 Thread JoeGoaUk
Raiding priest: Why this Kolaveri..

Somehow, I feel, the above incidence has unnecessarily blown out of proportion.

Haven’t we read or heard that IT officials or Police officers for that matter,
raided someone’s residence only to find nothing all?

If they didn’t find what they were looking for, all they have to do is say
‘sorry..we were only doing our duty’

We may be lawyers, engineers, teachers, politicians etc but we are ‘Citizens’
first and as such all citizens are subject to the same law.

Let us not make exceptions on the basis of religion, caste, tribe etc.
Or else, there be others who take advantage of the situation and may
use their religious premises as a hub for storing material meant for terrorism
etc

Get on with your work and let them do theirs.
Innocents have nothing to fear.

Extra:
Where is the ‘forgiveness’?
We should be learning about it from the godmen themselves.
But ref.various news items with pics (see blog), it looks like the priest has
firmly put his foot down rather the parishioners as reported.

For more – My point of view..
http://joegoauk-pointofview.blogspot.in/2012/02/raiding-priest-why-this-kolaveri.html

Talking about the priests..

Haven’t we heard or seen some priests known for amassing wealth for themselves,
their families (including mistresses if any)?

Haven’t we heard some priests owning properties, flats, cars, two wheelers etc?

Haven’t we heard some priest lending money?

Haven’t we heard about the 80 lakhs found at one priest’s Church residence?

Haven’t be heard or read of some priests who are into donating (donation out of
donation?)

Haven’t we heard of some priest involved in politics and openly supporting
their favourite political parties and candidates?

So, why this rage?

I mean, why this Kolaveri..?

This incidence should not stop any one from reporting poll related misdeeds in
you area. No matter who the person is, just report it (see 1950 below) but
at the same time let us use the service sensibly i.e. no hoax calls, no peronal
vendetta etc

blog
http://joegoauk-pointofview.blogspot.in/2012/02/raiding-priest-why-this-kolaveri.html

It reminds me of a London incident..

We just got off the bus and walking in the street leading to our homes (half a
km from bus stop). We were carrying large chained/leather bags. Mine was bigger
than the other neighbour. Suddenly, a speeding police car from behind stopped
right in front of us.
‘Sorry, we need to search your bag (my bag only).. there is theft in the city,
the information we got fitted your description’.
Go on then (I submitted myself, my bag I mean).
It took him only few seconds to search because all he found inside
the bag was grocery items like fruits and vegitables and no shoplifted item
they were looking for. They did apologise..but then I said ‘don't worry, I
understand, you were only doing your job’.
I could moan about them harassing me or discriminating on ethnic grounds though!

thank god, BJP is not ruling or else, 'Raiding priest' would have been
definitely added to the existing infamous list of SFX, Good Friday etc

[Goanet] Matanhy and BJP

2012-02-13 Thread Geraldo Oliveira
Matanhy and BJP As expected, Matanhy’s door to door campaign has been
carefully scrutinized and critics will always see his joining hands with BJP,
an excuse to paint him with the saffron brush.  This is exactly what the so
called ‘secular’  hypocrisy is all about.  Most of the the present Congress
MLAs have at some point in time, had close ties with the BJP, but our
‘secularist’ will choose not to make a mention. They will rather hype on the 10
years old controversial CD and  Good Friday issue,  than the most recent
closing ceremony of IFFI  deliberately scheduled on the feast of Goencho Saib
by ‘secular’ Congress headed by  Digubab.  Interestingly, every scam of the
Congress government whether it is illegal Mining, Regional plan, SEZ, Cidade de
Goa ordinance etc., is brushed under the carpet during elections by the so
called ‘secularist’. It is true that, Matanhy  joining the BJP has sent
shivers in the Congress
ranks and upset the so called secularist, but Goans at large must welcome this
as a very positive and prudent move that can bring about unity between  both
Christian and Hindu communities, which till date remain polarised as a result
of years of Congress misrule.  While the Congress has plundered  and sold Goa,
it’s Party chief Sonia Gandhi has lied to the electorate at the last election
on Special status and now, has unleashed the same bunch of powerful thieves
along with their families to consolidate their territories for the final
assault on mother Goa.   On the other hand, the BJP has atleast acknowledged
mistakes of the past and with more representatives of the Catholic community
joining  its ranks, will have to  rethink  its attitude towards the minority
community, which is positive for Goa. It is stupid to even think that Matanhy
will embrace RSS ideology or blindly follow any ill conceived policies of the
Party as alleged by some.
Matanhy  is a shrewd man  with a strong mind of his own,  capable of
influencing others towards his own vision for Goa.  Goa stands a much better
chance to bring about a Lokayukta and even Special Status under BJP   than
under any Congress Government  which is totally anti Goan. Our good friend
Rupert Coutinho has censured Matanhy, and with a long list of  questions, but
one can condone his ignorance of Matanhy’s achievements, both as an activist
and as a politician over the last 40 years. Just  to point out one example :
SEZ in Goa  was stopped  only when Matanhy gave an ultimatum to the Digamber
Kamat led  Government not so long ago.  It has always been Matanhy’s style not
to trumpet his achievements, but it is time to make known that Matanhy opposed
tooth and nail the idea of cancelation of Good Friday and many other policy
decisions when he was part of the BJP Government.    Mr. Coutinho being in UAE
is unaware that Matanhy has
joined the BJP on the advice of his supporters in Cortalim constituency which
itself speaks volumes of grassroot support and development in the area during
his tenure.  Anybody  can book Matanhy  for sins of omission, but not for
corruption and opportunism as alleged by Rupert Coutinho and if that was the
case, Matanhy could have easily joined the Congress years ago, when then Union
Minister Eduardo Faleiro invited him to join. More recently Matanhy could have
hopped into the Congress Party for plumb post when the last BJP Government was
toppled and become a crorepati like any other Congress MLA.  It surprised me
that Coutinho has not raised any questions of accountability to the Christao
leaders of Salcette who are busy plundering and looting Goa, some for the last
30 odd years, while the city of Margao stinks.  With little choice at the
disposal of electorate at this crucial election, which is ‘make or break’,  and
based on the current
scenario of candidates, one can easily conclude that a Parrikar government
with Matanhy in its ranks will be far better than any Congress combination to
govern Goa for the next 5 years.    Geraldo Oliveira

[Goanet] Pratapsingh Rane campaigns Door to -door for the first time -- From the Oherald online edition

2012-02-13 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar

Will Rane make it again? This time around he's campaigning like never before in
Poirem.Probably this is the first time Speaker Pratapsing Rane has been
compelled to do some campaigning in his bastion Poriem, since he appears to be
taken aback by aggressive campaigning by BJP's youth wing. BJP’s Vishwajit K
Rane has been visiting households in Poriem constituency to unseat Rane Senior
who has remained undefeated for the last 40 years.
Rane senior who was never seen doing door-to-door campaign in the past
elections for a change is also seen these days visiting some houses in his
constituency. Needless to say the humble folks of Poriem are pleasantly
surprised to see Khashe at their door steps.

Re: [Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India’s temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-13 Thread Santosh Helekar
I understand the position of both the so-called Catholic-Christian Secular
Forum (CSF) and Sandesh Anvekar in the following posts in this thread:

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2012-February/218517.html

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2012-February/218523.html

Despite its name, the CSF is not a secular forum. It is a Catholic propaganda
outfit as much as the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti is a Hindu propaganda outfit. So
it is understandable that it would want to point out the flaws in the Hindu
religion, and offer the Christian gospel as the answer. Similarly, Sandesh
appears to be a devout Hindu who is understandably offended by the anti-Hindu
propaganda of CSF. He is lashing out against the CSF in response, and may also
be overly paranoid about his fellow Hindus being converted to Christianity.
Neither the CSF nor Sandesh are a threat to India or to progress, any more than
the religious right in the U.S. and Europe are to their own countries because
of their Islamophobia. I therefore disagree with the one-sided overreaction of
Goanet Administrator Noronha and Goanetter Selma below.

Cheers,

Santosh

Sandesh, I'm not so much concerned about the urge to convert
(because we're always trying to convert to people in our way of
thinking, in religious and non-religious ways -- to vegetarianism,
atheism, Free Software or whatever our cause...). But it is worrying
indeed to see the stereotyped manner in which one religion (and
cultural trend) views another, even in the 21st century.

Needless to say, bigotry is not a monopoly of Christians; but I
disagree strongly with the endeavour to judge someone else's religion
by way of stereotypes and cliches.

Ignorance about the Church aside, I always find some comments faintly
 amusing.
In the Christian dominated West, these very people have no problem at all
sending their children to school where they all learn about Christ (yes, even
non-religious state schools), preform in Christmas pageants and cheerfully
 dress
up as Easter bunnies. It is only in India amidst a population of 1.2 billion,
where 2.3% are Christians, that they feel so threatened by the Church and
 so-called conversions.

It is attitudes such as these that will effectively assure India's place
perpetually in the Dark Ages. Strangely, no amount of middle-class prosperity
 in
India seems to be eradicating these attitudes which puts paid to the theory
 that
affluence and education are the best criteria for progress.

Re: [Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India?s temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-13 Thread Venantius J Pinto
My personal opinion on Anvedka’s response is that its his straightforward
opinion, an not complex analysis. He is saying what he sees fit and should
best and respectfully be accepted at that. Meaning, he shows us what he
believes is the motive of the Church—which I gather to mean the Catholic
Chrch, as in Roman HQ at the Vatican.

If its is worth anyone while: point out what the Church in India is/is
about, as in the differentiation between the Church (as in Catholic) and
other churches which are often seen as the same, and conveniently too. That
there are Baptists, Adventist, Presbyterians, etc. Then there are the
Orthodox Churches. In India the Syrian Church —Malankara Mar Thoma *Syrian
Churc, Jacobites…This has to be made clear. *
*
*
*Then one has to understand what is hope and what it means/implies to
different people--class, religiosity, etc; including even what it is that
ones hopes for, when a child is sent to a Catholic school (Of course all
non-Christians do not send their children to RC schools), then one has to
see what is it about conversion that rankles. Does one believe a forced
conversion to be a true conversion (a turning back on what one believes
holds ones own being together). *
*
*
*Does it dilutes ones spiritual or social inheritance? And is the Catholic
Church in India doing this and even if so what is it that gets into ones
craw.*

**The Catholic Church in India is quite different in that its overarching
trajectory as I see it is does not appear to be conversion. And even if it
was that is a horrific fear to live with at the very least for the balanced
Hindu, one who is also well-off, groomed, successful.

There are entire villages (unless people, her to mean the Christian writers
are unaware of) where not a single inhabitant has got/sought/ or been
converted, but the priests have done shall we say phenomenal community
service in the areas of irrigation, agriculture, schooling (no Hail Mary,
nothing).

Hope is hope and the above is still a story of hope--no conversions.

For the record, I see myself as a Hindu Christian but am not interested in
sharing any insight on my trajectory. The Christ is my opinion is living in
the Hindu, but few Hindus realize this, and very few Christians see the
Christ in their neighbors. This is not some high theological construct; its
simply is a way of living Christian tenets which are available to all, and
having the ability/ concern to see. and seek in the devadasi or anyone
maligned.scorned. The devadasi by any stretch of imagination are hardly
esteemed these days: most see them as fallen person, others do not use
their services (times have changed) and gone is that way of acknowledging
the other as Thou (see Martin Buber).

Best all.

Re: [Goanet] Ranes, Alemaos and Monserrates, could control 19 constituencies

2012-02-13 Thread Nascy Caldeira
Dear all Goans,

Any strategy is valid to keep the saffron Communalists and Fascists out of
power and thus avoid a Third World war, that will be unleashed on India if any
Indian Hindu Fascist (mainly BJP) group ever comes to power.
Corruption is a common factor in Indian Polity and Indian Life; but Communalism
and Fascism (Hitlerism) the worst kind is  a strategic thrust factor for the
BJP. They can only thrive on that. They do NOT have Good Policy for All
Indians, all Indian Cultures. They want only saffron swastika Raj for
themselves, not for all Indians. It is written thus in their constitution!

Communalism and Hitlerism is identifiable only with the BJP, the RSS, the Sangh
Parivar, the Bajrang Dal, the Senas etc. No end to these groups coming up every
day, with their Assault on our modern Culture.
These groups are spoiling the Fair Name of India all over the world. No modern
Indian can walk proud with head held high, because of these saffronite
(bloodied red) colours.

Now is the Time!
Shun them all to Kala Pani, the Andaman Islands, to live and die there. Why?
Because they do not know : How to Live and Let live, in Freedom and Harmony.

Literally.

[Goanet] two in the family

2012-02-13 Thread Nelson Lopes
Family members as representatives
Is it the policy of every National or regional political party to
limit representations to two members in the family ? why do we hold
only Congress to this self imposed norm, to be used at their
discretion? . Is it binding legally on the people to demand
enforcement and hold against them? Does the norm applicable to the
immediate family or to the extended family? One does not hear about
Sonia Ghandi and Rahul Gandhi flouting this norm. If it does not apply
to the leaders of the Party, why should we complain about others
Every individual has the democratic right to aspire ,be it daughter ,
son, wife. All those who have been officially granted party tickets
will be successful winners?Do we have only and exclusively have the
right to criticise such an exercise? Who will finally vote them in
office once, twice, thrice and for years to gether as the
representatives of the people? How can the candidates force any one to
vote for them, except persuade the voters.? If the voters do not
reject them are the candidates presenting themselves to be blamed ?
what prevents vocal votaries in presenting themselves as potential
candidates , enter the fray, a la Fr Bismark, if they consider
themselves as worthy, then please enter the field. The election of
independents is an indicator, that the party label is not the sure
bet. We understand that party supports candidates in election
campaign, but we also know that they buy their tickets, contribute to
party funds and have money and muscle power to conduct the campaign
costing a bomb and assure their party of win ability to contribute to
the numbers needed to form the govt. The management of election
process needs experience and workers and they are demanding a stiff
price for their services. Let us not forget the the roleof the money
power favouring election outcomes Those who can beat the frugal
expenditure can be counted. Sitting candidates have the advantage of
cultivating throughout, their constituencies interests and others are
at a clear disadvantage at his juncture, as the indebted voters would
like to gratefully redeem their debts and will not be swayed by
propaganda and change goal posts by promises and intelligent thinking.
What is the reason then of most unworthy candidates with criminal
records, illiterates making it to the finish line with great vote
difference? One example that comes to my mind is the election of Adv,
Uday Bembre based on merit alone and such an exercise is not repeated
even by himself subsequently
PATRICK FRENCH recent book India ,A Portrait offers statistical
,startling revelation of family representatives in Indian parliament
We must congratulate those who have the courage and conviction to
offer themselves as an alternative choice, knowing the limitations and
uncertainty and taking risks to enforce their Democratic right Those
arm chair specialists ensconced in their ivory towers, suggesting
high sounding theories are left licking their wounds of their
intellectual pride , as contrary results have stared at us in the
face, all the while The hope to make a difference depends on the
freedom of the voters to be realistic of the reality that will unfold
much to our disappointments Blame not the party but ourselves, who
vote them to power for one reason or the other, unable to see below
their noses and grasp the economics or the impact of magnitude of
monumental scams Political education is a long term goal to achieve
desirable goals It must begin even though the results are in the
distant

COMMENT:

Preface: I believe that Manohar Parrikar (never mind his asinine silly
doing porn' remark) is the best individual among the present lot in the
Goa Assembly. There is NO contest about that.

Unfortunately, Manohar Parrikar has his apron strings tied to the RSS and
BJP. I trust those two outfits as much as I trust the Kangress.

I also believe that Matanhy Saldanha has every right to choose which party
he wishes to join. Personally - for the past 10 years - I strongly believed
that he was a BJP. I am glad that he has finally been honest enough to come
out of the closet.

a: I am not sure HOW Gerald Oliveira comes to the conclusion in #1.
Better based on what? Past record or present mouthings?

b: re #2, I do not know the meanings of the partisan talking point i.e.
Secularist .and its cousin pseudo-secularistbut I'd say this to
Gerald . The VideoCD stuff was NO simple matter. If you have seen the
CD like I have, you (possibly) would have been aghast at the vicious
(albeit clever) attack on Christianity and Christians contained therein.

The 'Good Friday' issue IMHO is a non-issue.

Religion has NO place in public service. If the Church wishes to have a
service for Govt workers during working days, it should do so after working
hours. The Govt is NOT obligated to declare holidays when Govt work is
yet to be done. Those who want to attend religious functions on working
days, should take Vacation or Unpaid leave on those days. What is the sense
of giving Holidays to a set of people who are perpetually on Holiday
anyway? I would support Parrikar if he cancelled ALL religious holidays for
Govt servants.

The Good Friday issue (a personal worship issue) is quite different from
the disgustingly devious and communally divisive issue created by the VCD.
Let us not even begin to confuse the two.

Apologies would be a good start but not really enough. There must be a
firm commitment NEVER to repeat that nonsense again. AND, none of the stuff
seen in the attached URLs 1 2 (See foot of this post)

re #3: This article makes interesting reading. What Geraldo Oliveira is
suggesting, I believe, that One set of Delhi controls be replaced by
another.

Wonder what Gerald Oliveira has to say about that.

When I have written Goa, RIP, in the past on this forum, it is clear that
I am referring to the political set-up in Goa and not to the rest of Goan
society which is generally wonderful (food, music, culture, art, music,
literature, etc.). Just wanted to make that clear before some sensitive
soul with low self-esteem defensively writes some nonsense about critical
NRGs, life in America, etc. This is a Goa forum, hence the Goa mention.

With that in mind, the upcoming elections mean little since Goa's coffin
has already been nailed shut by the policies of the two national parties
in the last 15 years. Let the Goan corpse lie, we have disrespected the
motherland enough by raping the soil for mining and then urinating and
defecating through mega-project development.

At best now we can hope that a few ethical independents get elected to
rattle the grave and resurrect a new Goa. For some in Goa it will soon be
Easter and a religious resurrection. For all of Goa, we must remain
optimistic for a political resurrection.

George

First of all, I find Sandesh Anvekar's remark absolutely loathsome. No
doubt, some Goans are waiting with bated breath for the return of the
BJP-ram raj so that we can look forward to 5 years of hurt
sensibilities.

Ignorance about the Church aside, I always find some comments faintly
amusing. In the Christian dominated West, these very people have no
problem at all sending their children to school where they all learn about
Christ (yes, even non-religious state schools), preform in Christmas
pageants and cheerfully dress up as Easter bunnies. It is only in India
amidst a population of 1.2 billion, where 2.3% are Christians, that they
feel so threatened by the Church and so-called conversions.

It is attitudes such as these that will effectively assure India's place
perpetually in the Dark Ages. Strangely, no amount of middle-class
prosperity in India seems to be eradicating these attitudes which puts
paid to the theory that affluence and education are the best criteria for
progress.

Best,
selma

The motives of the Church have always been to Uplift, the thinking, the

Re: [Goanet] The Gospel provides powerful hope for India?s temple prostitutes | The CSF

2012-02-13 Thread Venantius J Pinto
REPOST.
Apologies on misspelling name. (vjp)

My personal opinion on Anvekar’s response is that its his is a
straightforward opinion, and not complex analysis. He is saying what he
sees fit, which should best and respectfully be accepted at that. Meaning,
he shows us what he believes to be the motive of the Church—which I gather
to mean the Catholic Church, as in Roman Catholic Church HQ at the
Vatican.

Church, Jacobites…Then there are all the evangelical churches. Evangelizing
is not the focus of the RCC, but being Christlike should be. That is a
whole different way of being. This has to be made clear. *
*
*
*Then one has to understand what hope is about, what it entails, and where
the hunger for it comes from. Accordingly, what does it means/imply to
different people--class, religiosity, etc; including what it is that ones
hopes for, when one sends ones child to a Catholic school, as also when
schools have been stormed at admission time (Of course all non-Christians
do not send their children to RC schools), then one has to see what is it
about conversion that rankles. Does one believe a forced conversion to be a
true conversion--that the knowledge that someone got converted: in that
turning away--is it that certain beliefs which have held ones own being
together get torn asunder?!*
*
*
*To be free and revel in liberty, one simply must consider such things.*
*
*
*Does it dilutes ones spiritual or social inheritance? And is the Catholic
Church in India doing this? And even if so what is it that gets into ones
craw. We are of course talking about us being a part of the 5,000 year and
counting civilization. *

**The Catholic Church in India is quite different in that its overarching
trajectory as I see it is does not appear to be conversion. And even if it
was, is that possibility truly a horrific fear to live with--at the very
least for the balanced Hindu, one who is also well-off, groomed,
successful.

For the record, I see myself as a Hindu Christian (A Christian living in
Santhan awareness, aware of other paths, and Ko Shinto via Shodo), but am
not interested in sharing any insight on my trajectory. The Christ is my
opinion is living in the Hindu, but few Hindus realize this, and very few
Christians see the Christ in their neighbors. This is not some high
theological construct; its simply is a way of living Christian tenets which
are available to all, and having the ability/ concern to see. and seek in
the devadasi or anyone maligned.scorned. The devadasi by any stretch of
imagination are hardly esteemed these days: most see them as fallen person,
others do not use their services (times have changed) and gone is that way
of acknowledging the other as Thou (see Martin Buber).

Best all.

[Goanet] Fw: We are among an union of dacoits and bullies

2012-02-13 Thread Bernado Colaco

In these past few weeks three incidents or more marked the daily lives of Goans
not only in Goa but also world wide. One was the Musuem dacoity, the other, the
institutionalized dacoity ie the case of corruption with the monster rat
involved and the third, the case of bullying by the indian navy in not allowing
Goans to participate in religious festivities on Anjediva.

But this is how it all began ... Ugly looking bearded sikhs and uglier
looking marathas and madrassis went about turning the place upside down,
looting houses and ransacking churches, despoiling shops of their stocks and
generally behaving very much like barbarians of thirteenth century whenever
they swooped down from their mountain lairs on the lush fields and rich cities
of their more civilized neighbours. They robbed and devastated where they could
and exacted purchases at a ridiculously low price where they could not,
removing everything to the illegal black markets maintained by their relations
back in the indian union, where huge ungodly profits would be the order of the
day Page 205. - December 1961. - Nehru Sezies Goa - L. Lourenço.

[Goanet] Stop the Family Raj!

2012-02-13 Thread Sandeep Heble
The 70s and the 80s saw a phenomenal rise in the growth of the Mumbai
Underworld. Haji Mastan, Dawood Ibrahim, Arun Gawli, Chota Rajan,
Mudaliar, Karim Lala and so many others became household names in the
area of of terror and fear. By adopting two simple techniques  -  1.
Mutually agreeing to operate from within their own territories and 2.
Wearing the mask of Robin Hood and distributing a part of their
ill-gotten wealth among the people -these petty criminals rose to
become huge Gang-lords and Extortionists and Mafia Dons and Smugglers.
This all happened 'Once upon a time in Mumbai', a price which the city
has been paying for till now. There is now an attempt to replicate
this model of horror and destruction in Goa. The Congress High command
has gifted one territory to the Ranes. Another one to the Alemaos. A
third to the Monserrates. And these three or four families, along with
their commanders and chiefs and lieutenants - the Madkaikars and
Parekh and Patnekar and a few others - will be vying to control the
destiny and future of our beloved state. If they manage to succeed in
their designs, even God will not be able to save Goa. Hence, Goans
must unite. We must not allow Goa to get into the hands of these three
or four families. The need to come together to prevent this 'horror
model' from becoming a reality is now. Behind the masks of Robin Hood
are individuals who are all out to destroy Goa. Let us not be fooled
by their chicanery, antics and tricks!
