My comment on that is:
My post was not about being over 50 and casting stones.

It was about an over-50 doing the 100m metre dash and requiring people to pay
to see it being done.

She is free to sing and vow the grassroots crowd. It’s their money. I am free

Unlike Eugene, I have never been closely involved with the G.O.A. And therefore
have no problem with it.

I do however have a problem with a star who has exceeded her ‘best by’ date by
close to 40 years, singing once well-composed songs by a famous Goan composer
since dead, that have also exceeded their ‘best by’ dates.

We had these songs sung by Palomi Ghosh in a previous Viva Goa year and now we
have the much older model with a once-pleasing now rusty voice doing the same
routine again.

A turn-off to Viva Goa in my opinion, not to mention the same old, same old
format (stalls, Indian Ambassador, Mississauga mayor stage routine) that has
endlessly prevailed.

The only thing Viva Goa is useful for, in my opinion, is to meet friends and
other people you have not met over the past year anywhere else.

[Goanet] Escaped Dubai Princess KIDNAPPED in Goa

2018-04-08 Thread Roland Francis
A follow-up to my Oddities Roundup article on the Indian Coastguard claim.

For a democratic govt to behave shamefully like this only goes to their
prevailing mindset. The climax of it is the boast that the Indian coastguard
saved the princess from kidnappers. One has to ask: who turned out to be the
real kidnappers.

Realpolitik dictates that if the Dubai Emir requested India to seize the boat
and return his daughter to the UAE, the request could not be refused in view of
the huge Indian population being employed there.

But to declare they were rescuing the princess from kidnappers is a humiliating
blow to the country’s integrity that calls into question India’s abundance of
‘fake news’.

[Goanet] UK: Fri 6 April Good News Chocolates escape Sugar Tax

2018-04-08 Thread MELVYN FERNANDES
UK: Fri 6 April Good News Chocolates escape Sugar Tax

On Friday 6 April 2018, the UK Government imposed a Tax on all sugary drinks
and juices. This was to tackle the growing obesity in the UK especially among
children and reduce the rise in diabetes and other conditions due to high
consumption of sugary items.

Lucky for us, chocolates were exempt. Chocolates are a high invisible export
from the United Kingdom as they are taken all around the world as presents to
spread happiness.

For us Goans in the UK this is especially good news as for relations and
friends suitcases full of chocolates are taken from here to Goa with goodwill,
a common myth is that they taste better from abroad not because they are given
free purchased from earnings in the UK.

In our FT World , Fotikoros and Toadokis( Liars and Cheats) anything goes. True
a fruit and nut chocolate purchased in Goa may have just one piece of fruit and
half a nut but the taste is, according to my taste buds, no different. Try the
Triangular Toblerore or Ferro Roche let us know the difference if any.

In the UK the Chocolate sizes have got smaller for the same price so this
season even more can fit in a suitcase so you need not miss anyone to share the
happiness. After all who wants to see a sad face during vacation? Cadbury is
still first choice.

[Goanet] Lorna to sing at Viva Goa

2018-04-08 Thread Eugene Correia
Hasn't Lorna Cordeiro come here often? People have heard her numerous
times. A rising star

from Goa or someone Goans here haven't heard before should have been given
ghe stage.

I heard the late tiatrist Opheilia's idaughter, Babli, could have got due
exposure for her new

CD in praise of her parents. Her,father was the late Peter Fernandes,
singer-tiatrist..

Was not the GOA President and the ex-culture director involved in getting

Lorna for a show last year? Wha was the profit? Wasn;t the profit less than
$200?

As I wrote in one Goan magazine, Lorna came to Toronto for a show that was
billed as sponsored by GOA, but it’s alleged it was GOA President Selwyn
Colaco and Marshal Fernandes, then the culture secretary, who jointly
brought Lorna.

Lorna and her music director Norman Cardozo came from New Jersey after a
show put up by Effie Tavares, sister of Goa’s popular writer/director,
Sammy Tavares.

The GOA has decided to give Lorna a LIfetime Award. May I ask is GOA a
“trade body” or an organization totally responsible for promoting tiatr and
khell-tiartr. in Goa, there’s a tiatr association called Tiatr Academy of
Goa (TAG) which gives awards and holds tiatr competition, etc.

This is a recognized body and a Lifetime Award by TAG has a prestigioous
value. Is Lorna going to get the award because her music director Norman
Cardoza is now “closely” to the Goa Amigos, which is led by Selwyn. The
whole thing stinks of favouritism.

Unfortunately, I, for one, has lost confidence in this executive committee.
I wa talking to an ex-president a month or so ago and he too agree that
he’s keep himself at a distance from the current GOA. In the same way, a
former chief o GOA Trustees has lost interest in the GOA and is unhappy
with what is going on.

[Goanet] Development in Goa

2018-04-08 Thread Vivian A. DSouza
In the developed countries of this world, planning takes place at a grass roots
level.  There are residential areas and there are commercial areas and in some
cases mixed development areas. Areas are set aside in the development plans
for schools and places of worship.  When a developer submits his project for
approval,  the planning agency makes an impact study to determine whether there
is or will be sufficient water supply, linkage to sewer systems, electric
supply, access roads etc.  If it is determined that the project is deficient in
the foresaid, an estimate is made of what it will cost to bring all these
systems up to par.  The developer is then required to pay a sum equivalent to
the estimate, before his project is approved.  It then becomes the Government;
responsibility to ensure that all the support systems are developed concurrent
with the building work.
In Goa I have noticed that projects are developed haphazardly, causing a great
deal of problems to neighborhoods, including lack of water supply, deficient
electric current  etc.   Residential homes have been built in areas identified
as "private forest"..  In the absence of an approved Regional Plan  apparently
there are no restrictions on where one is allowed to build.  Consequently,
fields are filled in with what appears to be construction debris, probably late
at night;  Hills in off the beaten path locations are excavated with impunity,
and  new luxury homes are swiftly built and become a "fait accompli".   In one
location which was clearly private forest land  the owner first constructed a
"Gomti"  or shrine.  Then he  constructed a temporary  shelter with tarpaulins,
then  within the temporary shelter, a permanent home was built.  With a "Gomti"
or shrine Goans being  either very spiritual or superstitious keep their hands
off  a site which has a  "Gomti".  A few months later, the house built on this
site got an electric connection and a water connection.How ?  I don't know. I
am told that anything can be done with something called "speed money".
Builders from Mumbai and Delhi with their coffers overflowing with "black
money"  are pushing their way into Goa, to build in locations where they could
not previously build.  Many of these developments  remain half-empty  but it
does not bother the builders as long as their money is laundered and black
money becomes white money.   This is Goa .

[Goanet] VIJAI, MICHAEL HAVE TO STOP PLAYING VILLAINS

2018-04-08 Thread Stephen Dias
VIJAI, MICHAEL HAVE TO
STOP PLAYING VILLAINS

STEPHEN DIAS, Dona Paula

The clamour against the setting up of the Planning and Development
Authorities (PDAs) is getting louder and louder. At last, the people have
organized themselves against the PDAs in Santa Cruz, Kadamba plateau,
Taleigao, St, Andre, Calangute, Candolim and Parra. The congregation at the
Azad Maidan on 6th April, 2018 saw an impressive show of strength by the
people who want to oppose disproportionate so-called development which will
sound the death knell for these areas which are basically villages. The
people this time have made their stand very clear and staged a democratic
and civilized demonstration against the further concretization of Goa. Goa
Foundation director, Claude Alvares, a very prominent activist and
environmentalist as well as many others like famous historian Prajal
Sakhardande and Sabina Martins of the Goa Bachao Abhiyan also attended the
peaceful show of strength and pledged their unstinting support against the
formation of the PDAs. Thanks to their support, the Goa Against Planning
and Development Authorities is now a well organized movement that can take
the matter to the courts, even if need be to the Supreme Court, thus adding
a much needed boost to the popular uprising against the PDAs.

However, two elected representatives of the coalition government -- namely
Town and Country Planning Minister, Vijai Sardessai and Michael Lobo, the
Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the North Goa Planning Development Authority
-- are adamant against bowing to the popular wishes. While Vijai Sardesai
has termed the agitation a ~mobocracy”, which is totally misplaced, since
the demonstration was peaceful and civilized, Michael Lobo stated that come
what may, he would go ahead with the formulation of the Outline Development
Plan (ODP) for Calangute, Candolim and Parra.

These two coalition partners seem to be seeking the destruction of Goa by
allowing the concretization of Goa against the express wishes of the people
with high-rise buildings in paddy fields, orchard land, hills and coastal
areas; which will lead to more traffic snarls and accumulation of garbage
as well as discharge of sewage, in addition to putting pressure on
electricity and water shortages, which is now widespread in the state and
emission of more green house gases leading to global warming and climate
change. People power is paramount and the bed-rock of democracy, and this
time the people are bent on nipping in the bud the devious designs to sell
Goa by resorting to disproportionate concretization.

Sustained pressure should be kept by the Goans who only want to protect
their land from land sharks and mafias and maintain the rustic charm of
these villages, an essential element of Goenkarponn.
