Moi-mogan, Domnic Fernandes Anjuna/Dhahran, KSA === MODDLELEA KHURSAK RESPET NAM (NO RESPECT FOR A BROKEN CROSS) Our ancestors were not great learned men but they had a lot of experience in their lives which they left behind for us in the form of proverbs. In the past, when a house foundation was laid, they carved out a cross on a stone and it was kept in front of the house until the construction was over. As soon as the house was complete, they raised a small stone pedestal inside the compound, facing the house, and placed the cross-carved stone on it; this system has now diminished. They celebrated a litany to the cross and inaugurated the house. They then placed flowers and adored the cross every day. If one looked around he/she came across and still comes many crosses in a ward. Similarly, whenever a person met with an accident and died on the road, they erected and still erect a cross on the spot so the passers by remember the person and pray for his/her soul. All the crosses which exist in our compounds, chapels and churches are made from stones and yet we pray to them; hence, our ancestors have left us an adage: Mandlear Dev, nam zalear fator

[Goanet] World Goa Day and Konkani
Goanetters visiting Viva Goa 2006 in Toronto, Canada on July 29, can use the BMX booth as a meeting point. Please list your name on the message board that will be provided, courtesy of BMX. http://bmxgoa.com Mogall Goenkar bhav-bhoinnanim, It is that time of the year when Goans worldwide celebrate World Goa Day! Although I don't read every message that is posted on Goan forums, I have recently made an attempt to read messages connected with World Goa Day. What I have learnt is that Goan communities, mainly in Western countries, meet once a year and remind themselves that they are of Goan origin. They do this by interacting among themselves through a dance, picnic, gathering, etc. They also introduce Goan dishes and sweets to give it a Goan taste. Does this really portray us as Goans? Don't you think something is missing here? None of the reports I read mentioned a Konkani word in them other than the playing of Konkani music and the singing of mandos in some cases. So, how can the gathering be identified as Goan? If people in the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, etc. meet and speak in English, how does a non-Goan attending these functions differentiate (him)herself from a Goan? In fact, that person might question the attendee(s): Is this a Goan function? But everybody speaks English/French! Don't you have your own language? By the same token, if Konkani was used at a function that could have made a difference and the outsider might have been forced to ask the host What did he/she say? What language is that? This is where a proud Goan would say: That's my mother tongue the Konkani language! I also understand that August 20 of each year is declared as World Goa Day. August 20 each year is also celebrated in Goa and the Konkani world as Konkani Day. That is the date that our language, Konkani, was included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. As we celebrate World Goa Day this year, my earnest request to Goans worldwide is to introduce our Konkani language in your functions in order to make them more Goa-oriented by speaking our mother tongue. I am not forcing everyone to speak the language but at least the announcers/Emcees should make an effort to welcome/greet the crowd in Konkani. Here are a few sentences which could be used at World Goa Day functions abroad: The announcer/Emcee introduces himself and wishes the crowd thus: Somestank mae-mogacho ievkar (Welcome everybody). Or Somestank Dev bori sanz dium (Good evening everybody). At the end of the program, he/she winds up the function by wishing the folks: Dev boro dis dium (Good morning), if the function ends in the morning Or Dev bori rat dium (Good night), if the function ends at night. Last but not the least; they should not forget to thank the crowd in Konkani by saying Dev borem korum! I am confident these few words will not only add color to the function but will also go a long way to establish the roots of our language in the Diaspora! The attendees may also use the following simple phrases to enquire about each other at a function: Tum kosso asa/Tum koxem asa? (How are you?) Hanv boro asa/Hanv borem asa. (I am fine.) Tum Goyeam kednam gelolo/Tum Goyeam kednam gelelem? (When did you last visit Goa?) Hanv Goyeam porum gelolom/Hanv Goyeam porum gelelem. (I had been to Goa last year.) Tuzo ghorkar koso asa/Tuji ghorkarn koxi asa? (How is your husband/wife?) Mozo ghorkar boro asa/Moji ghorkarn bori asa. (My husband/wife is fine). Tumchim bhurgim koxim asat? (How are your children?) Amchim bhurgim borim asat. (Our children are fine). Aichi manddavoll ani jevonn tumkam koxem laglem? (How did you like today's arrangement and food? Aichi manddavoll ani jevonn amkam ekdom borem laglem. (We liked today's arrangement and food very much.) Borem tor, fuddlea vorsa mellche! (OK then, see you next year!) Let us keep in mind that our language is the key to our identity and distinctiveness that identifies us as Goenkars (Goans) anywhere in the world! Have a wonderful World Goa Day 2006! Mogall Goenkar bhav-bhoinnanim, August 20 is sixteen days away when we will be celebrating World Goa Day. This date also happens to be the 14th anniversary of the inclusion of our Konkani language in the VIII Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This is exactly why Miguel Braganza has suggested that it also be celebrated as the World Konkani Day. This message is to request Goans/Goan Associations all over the world to patronize Konkani by using it in connection with the World Goa Day. From now on, I suggest that the subject line read as World Goa/Konkani Day (Sonvsari Goyem/Konknni Bhas Dis.) The translation of the title will not only lend solidarity but will also announce to the world that we are celebrating a Goan function. I also suggest that World Goa/Konkani Day functions end with the following slogan: Viva World Goa Day - Viva Konkani! Have a wonderful World Goa/Konkani Day 2006! [Goanet] DEVCHAR (Evil Spirit) and the VOIJINN MAIM Part II!
on the way to the harvest is the sign of a good yield. The sight of an owl makes childbirth easier. If a woman is pregnant and she alone hears an owl hoot outside her house at night then her child will be blessed. Owl amulets protect women during childbirth. The voijinn maim often handed in such amulets to pregnant women. When a pregnant woman hears an owl it is an omen that her child will be a girl. The owl makes two different sounds; the first means it is safe to go, and the second means it's better to say at home. Before we get on to voijinn maim's next schedule of driving away an evil eye, I shall talk a little on the word nodor (sight): A person's eyes are one of the most precious parts of the body; they are also one of the most dangerous weapons! Some people are born with an attractive pair of eyes so much so that when a boy or a girl looks into each other's eyes, he/she gets kind of hypnotized and falls for the person without even an introduction; that's what is called power of eyes!' Their eyes are so powerful that they can melt people like ice and make them their subordinates. These are the type of people who became a pest to the society because whatever they looked at was destroyed, including human beings, especially children. Those who grew up in Goa in the 1950's/1960's surely remember children wearing a multicolored-beads-necklace around their necks and also around their waist line. This was to ward off an evil eye. Early in the morning, as soon as parents finished combing a child's hair and dressed him/her up, they put a small black tikli (dot) in the center of the forehead and also sometimes in the center of both the cheeks. If they were in a hurry and forgot to do this, they returned home, placed the tikli and then only proceeded on their journey. This also was done to ward off an evil eye. No parents were ready to take the risk and then spend the whole night trying to calm down a crying baby who ultimately would fall sick the next morning. A small pottli (bundle) containing an owl's nail or an eye or a piece of bone was also tied to beads necklace. This served as an effective talisman to avert the evil eye'. Sometimes, a small pottli containing fresh garlic was also tied to the necklace which helped keep the evil spirit away and protected the child. Here is how the voijinn maim drove away evil spirit from a person's body: Continued . a doctor is not enough; he/she should have hath-gunn (power to produce effects) and the voijinn maim possessed it, which is why she was always in high demand. It is also believed that children inherit parents' qualities. None of Morgorit voijinn's seven children carried on their mother's profession. However, her third son, Francis Jose Rosa Fernandes aka Frank Rose, followed medicinal path. He first worked with Cosme Matias Menezes in Panaji as a Pharmacist and then joined the Asilo Hospital in Mapusa where he worked and retired as a Pharmacist. He still serves the Anjunkars by prescribing medicines and helping them with injections; hence, people call him Dotor Francis. Now Margarita's grandson, Caraciolo Nazareth Fernandes, known to all as Dr. Nazareth, has become a doctor and is employed in Goa Medical College as Emergency Trauma In-Charge. Patients from Anjuna and neighboring villages come to consult him at home when he is off duty. After a long time, we now have a resident doctor in Anjuna! Morgorit voijinn maim originally hailed from Calafura (Santa Cruz); she was married in Gaumvaddy, Anjuna. She died of a massive heart attack. She was 71 years old - Born: 08/09/1900; died: 21/07/1971. We have not had a voijinn maim in Anjuna since she passed away. She will always be remembered as a savior of the masses in Anjuna. [Goanet] What is a Christian?
I would like to share the following message with Goanetters: What is a Christian? When I say I am a Christian, Im not shouting Im clean living. Im whispering I was lost; now Im found and forgiven. When I say I am a Christian, I dont speak of this with pride. Im confessing that I stumble and need CHRIST to be my guide. When I say I am a Christian, I am not trying to be strong. Im professing that Im weak and need HIS strength to carry on. When I say I am a Christian, Im not bragging of success. Im admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess. When I say I am a Christian, Im not claiming to be perfect; my flaws are far too visible but, God believes I am worth it. When I say I am a Christian, I still feel the sting of pain, I have my share of heartaches. So, I call upon His name. When I say I am a Christian, Im not holier than thou, Im just a simple sinner who received Gods good grace, somehow. Author Maya Angelou. [Goanet] Lyrics of Konkani song ICE CREAM ani THUMBS UP by the late Rom Tony
The late Rom Tony was one of the best composers of the Konkani stage. He mostly composed and sang duets/duos, trios, quartets, quintets, etc. Besides composing powerful political songs, he also composed double-meaning songs which he mostly sang in the form of a trio with Jr. Rod and his daughter, Felcy, or Josephine. The following trio with double-meaning was sung in a tiatro in Narvemkar mattov in Mapusa in 1980. The composition of the song is superb. I would have liked to give a gist of the song but I wont do that because the charm will be lost. I leave it to readers to figure out the meaning of the title of the song. By the way, there are no vulgar words or expressions in this song; it is just Rom Tonys way of playing with words and presenting his songs with double-meaning: Here are the lyrics of the song: Legend: JR = Jr. Rod; J = Josephine; RT = Rom Tony ICE CREAM ani THUMBS UP Sung by Jr. Rod, Josephine and the late Rom Tony: JRJ: Amkam avoi-bapain College xikonk ghailim Amchi College suttttanch bosir amkam gheilim Mogak amchea forsod asonam, xikop amchea motint vochnam Kamam ami fokot kortat bhailim RT: Hanv jei tea hotelan him dogaim jeilim Picture odezank mhunn dogaim mure him eilim Ievn dogaim boslim kuxik Dovlean falam martalim oxim Hanvem ek bara don pikcheram poilim Chorus J: Mogan bonvchim ami sodankal, JR: College moga amchi poddoum padd J: Kya dekta hai re budde ka bal? [Goanet] Happy Birthday GOANET!
Dear Goanet, There is a saying in Konkani: Khal'leleacho denkor ievnk zai which roughly translated means to belch when one's stomach is full - to be grateful. This message is to express my gratefulness to Goanet for providing me a platform to write from and spread the word on Goa and our mother tongue, Konkani, to Goans across the globe. My special thanks to the Goanet Admin Team for keeping Goanet going all these years. You guys are doing a tremendous job and service to the Goan society. Keep up the good work! I take this opportunity of wishing 'Goanet' Many Happy Returns of the Day and a very Happy 12th Birthday! As Goanet enters its adolescent stage, may it progress by leaps and bounds and make us all feel proud. Remember - 'together we stand, divided we fall.' I dedicate the following Konkani poem to Goanet: G - Goanet tum Goenkaranchem chovis horamchem potr khobranchem (Goanet you're Goans' round-the-clock newspaper) O - Oundum vaddon tum zalem danddgem bara vorsanchem (You grew up into a robust 12-year-old this year) A - Anvdetanv sogott ami tuka lambdig jivit sukhachem (We all wish you a long, prosperous life) N - Niskuchar aiz-kal tum sabar zonnanchem (You are the envy of many these days) E - Ekmeti tum Bardezkaranchem, Saxttikaranchem ani Tiswaddkaranchem (You're the union of people from Bardez, Salcete and Tiswaddi) T - Tankta titli Konknni Goanettar borovn haddunk khaltem magnnem amchem (Our humble request is for you to publish as much Konkani on Goanet as possible.) [Goanet] Happy Birthday Mr. Eduardo Faleiro!
Mr. Eduardo Faleiro was born in Raia, Goa on August 30, 1940. He is the only Goan politician to serve in the Union Cabinet for a decade (1986-1996.) Here is a glance at the positions he held from 1971 to date: 1971-1976: Member, Goa Legislative Assembly 1974-1976: Deputy Leader, CLP (I), Goa Legislative Assembly 1977: Elected to the Sixth Lok Sabha 1980: Re-elected to the Seventh Lok Sabha 1982-1986: Chairman, Economic Development Corporation 1984: Elected to the Eighth Lok Sabha for the third consecutive time 1985-1986: Chairman, House Committee May 1986 to February 1988: Union Minister of State, External Affairs February 1988 to December 1989: Union Minister of State, Economic Affairs (Finance) 1989-1990: Elected to the Ninth Lok Sabha for the fourth time 1990: Member, Committee of Privileges; Member, Consultative Committee; Ministry of Planning and Program Implementation 1991: Elected to the Tenth Lok Sabha for the fifth time 1992: Leader of the Indian Delegation to the United Nations June 23, 1991 to January 1993: Union Minister of State, External Affairs January 18, 1993 to April 1996 Union Minister of State, Chemicals Fertilizers, Ocean Development, Electronics, Parliamentary Affairs 1995: Vice Chairperson of Independent World Commission on Oceans July 26, 1999: Elected Member of Rajya Sabha (Council of States.) In March this year, he was appointed as Commissioner for NRI Affairs by the Government of Goa with the rank of a Cabinet Minister. Having assumed his new responsibilities, Mr. Faleiro, has been seen immediately addressing the interests of NRI Goans. Given his experience and mettle, we are confident he will do everything in his power to facilitate and improve the situation for Non-Resident Goans. On behalf of Goans everywhere, I wish Mr. Faleiro Many Happy Returns of the Day and a very Happy Birthday. May the Almighty Lord bestow His choicest blessings on him, grant him good health, fulfill all his wishes and help him in day-to-day affairs so he can serve us better. Here are the lyrics of the song EDUARDO FALEIRO by the living legend of the Konkani stage and Padmashree award winner, M. Boyer, ganv-bhav of Mr. Faleiro. M. Boyer sang this song in the mid 1980s after Eduardo created a hat trick by winning a seat in the eighth Lok Sabha for the third consecutive time: EDUARDO FALEIRO by M. The wrong guy getting executed despite all the precautions: One of the students (a married man with family) who was studying with us in the Non-Degreed Professional English Language Program in 1984, was suddenly absent for about two weeks, which meant he would be dropped from the program due to excessive absences. When we issued the Final Drop Notice, we were informed by his Department that he was behind the bars charged with murder. In those days, capital punishment was applied immediately after one was convicted. The authorities passed the sentence for the man to be beheaded on a Friday. While the man was praying in his cell and preparing himself for the beheading on the next day, a security officer entered the cell and informed him that he was free to go home, as they had caught the real murderer who had confessed to the murder. The man fainted at the news; he was freed the next morning, which otherwise would have been his last day on this planet. As a special case, he was reinstated in the program which is when he told us the whole story. He was thankful to God for giving him a new life. Now that this issue has come up again, there were several points I had made, and for now, want to re-state just two of them: a) Your proposal would require a change in the law in India as far as I can tell but my hunch is that this would be most unlikely; b) Notwithstanding the existence of capital punishment in India, imagine the disgust of the outside world with Goa going back to barbaric times with your gruesome public execution model. Public executions as in Saudi Arabia are viewed with great repugnance. Do you want Goa's favourable image abroad to be so tarnished? So that there is no doubt about my own position on state sanctioned murder, when executions take place, I want to re-state that I am totally opposed to the death penalty as is the case in the European Union. There are many reasons and mine are very much like Aristo's, but one that worries me a lot is the risk of the wrong guy getting executed despite all the precautions taken. Mistakes like this have happened and will continue to happen among humans. See http://funny2.com/bulb.htm At this rate, we will be able, at best, to fix just three or four bulbs as a community. And for some strange reason, the street light in front of my house keeps going bust every few weeks. Given our small population and declining birth rates, we're running out of numbers here. And, we all (or am I wrong) want to bring an end to the meltingpotability of Goa to embrace and extend and make 'outsiders' into its on. On the contrary, we are making 'outsiders' of 'insiders'. Nevertheless, this is not a new phenomenon. Just like all languages, Hindi too is having to face-up and deal with the English language, which IS the language of choice for all communication around the world. Film magazines like Filmfare, Cine Blitz, etc are in the English Language. If the millions of Indians in the Diaspora are going to continue to speak Hindi and not read/write it...why even Roman Hindi may be the necessary evil to turn to. [Goanet] Twinkle Khanna (Akshay Kumar's wife) buys a house in Gaumvaddy, Anjuna
At the end of 2006, my next door neighbor sold her ancestral house and property (around 1,300 sq. meters) to a Delhi party for Rs.20,00,000 - brokers' (local boys') cut was Rs.5,00,000; thus she got Rs.15,00,000 net. By the end of 2007, the whole house was renovated in antique style while maintaining its originality. The party built an exposed masonry front compound wall, created a garden in front of the house, built a swimming pool at the back with an antique style shed or rest place beside the pool, and installed a Jacuzzi. He also furnished the house with antiquities brought in from Kerala. On the whole, he must have spent a little over Rs. one crore on the house and antiquities. He then put up the house for sale – buying, developing plots/houses and selling them seems to be his business. Different quotes were floating ranging from Rs.2-3 crores. Last February, one fine evening Akshay Kumar, the Bollywood actor, arrived in Anjuna and by the next morning a deal was reached - he bought the house for his wife, Twinkle Khanna, for Rupees three crores!!! The house is named TARA. So far, they (Twinkle Khanna and her son, her mother, Dimple Kapadia and Akshay Kumar's sister) paid only one visit to the house. They stay put in the house for four days. When asked if the house was for sale and even when it was sold to the Delhi party, my neighbor always denied the fact and asked Tumkam konnem sanglam hanv ghor vinktam mhunnon? (Who told you I am selling the house?). Current rate in Anjuna is between Rs.6,000-7000 per square meter. The lady now regrets having sold the house so cheap. What’s the use of crying over spilled milk now? Moreover, the norm of the day in Goa is Paisa feko, tamasha dekho. (Spend money and enjoy the show)! [Goanet] ABC Beaches of Goa (Anjuna-Baga-Calangute)
Dear Joe, Many thanks for posting the clippings on ABC Beaches of Goa - Anjuna-Baga-Calangute. I viewed the clippings of Anjuna beach several times but could not see the shore; there can't be a beach without a shore. Obviously, you did not visit Anjuna beach - you visited Anjuna rocks. Anjuna beach is around three hundred meters from the colorful shops you showed on your clippings. It's not only you but most people who visit Anjuna land on the spot you visited and think it is the Anjuna beach. We have a beautiful beach with a large shore where people bathe freely. The Flea Market takes place adjacent to Anjuna beach shore - not adjacent to the rocks shown on the clippings. Miss Scarlett’s dead body was found on the shore of Anjuna beach – not among rocks. When you are in the North next, please visit actual Anjuna beach and re-post the clippings. When in Anjuna, please call me on my mobile 9420979201 - landline (0832)2274954. You are doing a wonderful service to the Goan community. Please keep up the good work. [Goanet] Sweet Success for Sweet Poison
The following appeared in yesterday’s ‘Herald 2day’: - Sweet Success for Sweet Poison It is not everyday that we watch plays, television shows or movies that do more than just make us laugh; with forgettable characters and themes that seem over-discussed, not to mention shallow. But thank God for productions that do not only entertain but feed the mind, allowing us to ponder on issues that are socially-relevant, enough to make you get up and do something about it albeit in a small way. Such was Monday night’s Sweet Poison at the Kala Academy, written and directed by Tomazinho Cardozo and translated to English by the play’s main character, veteran tiatrist Irene Cardozo. Together, they are the people behind Kala Mogi Productions which was established in 1978 in Candolim. Its Konkani version was first staged in 1989, garnering first-place awards in all major and minor categories at the annual Tiatr Competition organized by the Kala Academy. The story is set in the 1980s when Tourism became a huge business in our state, at a time when there were a few hotels to accommodate tourists thus prompting certain enterprising individuals to open up their houses for paying guests. It brings to focus a simple family in a coastal town in Goa whose head-of-household (played by Manohar Redkar) was an overseas worker in Kuwait. Upon the decision of the mother (played by Irene Cardozo) and swayed by Mr. Tourism (played by Mathias Mascarenhas), this humble residence by the sea is turned into a “commercial guesthouse” for a daily rate that proved to be a good business for a plain housewife. It showed how she had decided to lease the three rooms of their house to local and foreign tourist, exchanging the comfort of her teenage children for more cash. As the play unfolds, two contrasting realities are seen as a result of this venture – that of the family’s earning growing by leaps and bounds versus the decline in family values. This was shown in how the children’s behavior had changed completely, having been influenced by the tourists who brought with them the “ways of the new world” – alcohol and drug addiction. 19 years later, Sweet Poison poses the question “Tourism may bring money to Goa, but at what cost?” Aside from the play being thought-provoking, Sweet Poison was definitely touching, striking a sensitive chord in the hearts of everyone in the audience. The actors were all suited for their roles and looked so real in the portrayal of their respective characters. So intense was the interpretation of disappointment and regret by Redkar and Cardozo respectively, that at the end of the play most of those in the audience had to wipe a tear or two. The poignant moments of the play were of course made lighter by the contrasting characters of Tourism (Mathias Mascarenhas) and Anti-Tourism (played by Tomazinho’s nephew, Assis Cardozo, as well as Comedian 64 who played the German tourist, and Indian drug-peddler Puto-Swami, played by Dyashwar Morajkar; a valuable ingredient in any tiatr. Another important character was that of Bombay journalist played by Larissa D’Souza. Suitably called Sweet Poison, her supposed study on the ill effects of tourism on Goan life paved the way for the resolution of the story. Every element as background music, light and sound effects, stage setting and costumes were all done in an excellent manner, complimenting the story so that applause flooded the auditorium after each scene. From all of us at Herald 2day, congratulations to the entire cast and crew of Sweet Poison, and to Mr. Mrs. Tomazinho Cardozo of Kala Mogi. May you not tire in giving us more of these plays and may your tribe increase! Comments from the audience: Oliver Sylvia Albuquerque “Sweet Poison is definitely an eye-opener! They should do this again and in more venues, especially in the coastal areas of Baga, Calangute and Anjuna.” Leonel Lourdes Rodrigues “It is a very good adaptation of the Konkani version. The end-result is a very good job!” -- Moi-mogan, Domnic Fernandes Gaumvaddy, Anjuna _ Chose your Life Partner? Join MSN Matrimony FREE http://www.shaadi.com/msn/matrimony.php

[Goanet] Sale of bungalow in Anjuna in St. Michael's Church property
Around the beginning of the Eighties, the Confraria was finding it difficult to maintain Anjuna Church and sustain its staff. So, it approached the Bishop’s House and got permission to sell the property behind it which was known to all as “igorjechem bens” (Church property). Here is a brief on how Anjuna Church property came about. Centuries ago, there was a ward known as ‘Dazan’ in Anjuna. The Portuguese changed it to “Grande Chinvar”. Its mahajans belonged to the Vaishya class bearing the name Porbu or Prabhu; later the Portuguese changed it to Porobo. The Porobos are the original ‘ganvkars’ (settlers/free-holders) of Anjuna. Since ganvkars dominated the village at the time, they selected the best elevated sites for residential purposes. The belt of dry uplands was named as ‘Voilo vaddo’ in Gaumvaddy, which is also known as ‘Sonarvaddo’, ‘Fogervaddo’ and ‘Porobo vaddo’ because most Porobos lived there, though they also occupied low land in Gaumvaddy where we had and still have many Porobos, including the living proof of a Hindu convert to Christianity – Francisco Salvador D’Souza, popularly known to all as ‘Salu Porobo’. He was 100+ years old when he died. The Porobos then allotted sectors to various occupational groups in the Gaumvaddy. Finally, the surplus tracts or the no-man’s land in the village were placed under the protection of the temple deity - obviously, there was a temple in place of St. Michael’s church; the “tollem” (pond) attached to the temple still exists. But when the Portuguese built the Church and assumed control, these no-man’s lands were passed on to the Church and were called “igorjechem bens” (Church property). A plan to sell the Church property was drawn up, which was approved by the Bishop’s House and respective government authorities and small plots of 250 square meters each were arranged with road access, etc. One of the conditions at the time of purchase was that these plots should be sold to Christians, preferably Anjunkars, and that they could not be resold. However, rules in Goa change overnight – just like our governments - “rul bul geli dobeant” (to hell with rules). Initially, the plots were sold at Rs.500 per square meter. Some plots were gradually resold to non-Goans at a much higher rate – the rate for these plots in 2006 was Rs.2,000 per square meter – the plot in question in Anjuna Church property where a replica of an old bungalow has been built is one of them. I called up the builder to find out the name of the buyer and the price but he flatly refused saying that he is not allowed to divert that information to anybody. It seems the buyer wants to remain anonymous, though rumor has it that it is one of the sons of the famous Mahendra Mahendra, the makers of “Scorpio” - a car many Goans proudly own! As for the price of the bungalow, when Twinkle Khanna bought the house in Gaumvaddy for three crores, the builder was quoting Rs.2.4 crores. Since the total area of the plot is only 250 sq. meters, without an extra inch on all four sides, nobody came forward to buy it. Moreover, it’s not an antique house but built in antique style. But still there are people around who throw money and have fun. Just today I learned through a reliable source that the bungalow was sold for Rupees 1.8 crores. Since buying the house last month, the new owner has made many changes to the exterior of the bungalow. “From rags to riches” - that’s the story of Anjuna. Welcome to modern Anjuna – the village of Bollywood stars and tycoons! [Goanet] Carlito's Way
The following write-up appeared in yesterday’s Herald 2day supplement: Carlito’s Way Playing a trumpet passionately for a span of more than 30 years is an extraordinary feat. And he being a Goan makes it all the more a big difference. Carlito Fernandes knows everything from the minute to the melodious details of a trumpet, writes Dolcy D’Cruz. Carlito Fernandes has made a name for Goa by playing the trumpet for the Indian Navy Band as well as the Bahrain Police Band. He rendered 30 years of service to the Bahrain Band and was awarded a Special medal embossed with ‘Shaikh ISSA Medal’. As a young boy, he was inspired by watching the Hollywood flick ‘Seven Brothers’ in which he noticed a young girl playing the trumpet. Determined to learn playing the trumpet perfectly, he enrolled under Roque Jacinto Fernandes. Through his first teacher, Carlito learnt the first steps of music and to sing songs, solfam. After this, Luis Henrick Rebello taught him the natural scale of the trumpet. At age 17, and with some assistance from Baltazar Carvalho (a musician in the Air Force Band), he was enrolled in the Indian Navy Band. He was designated as Leading Band Man after completing 10 years with them. He then joined Chris Perry after completing his ten years of service to the Indian Navy Band who in turn helped Carlito improvise on Jazz music, Blues and Foxtrot. They played at the Hotel Venice along with the world renowned Goan singer, Lorna. Carlito then applied to the Bahrain Police Band, the band master of which enquired about Carlito’s skills. He was informed that ‘Carlito is far more experienced and has the knowledge of classical music reading than anyone in the band’ at that time. He was appointed without even an interview to the Bahrain Police Band. There he was first given a rank by the Bahrain Government as ‘Reserved Officer’ and later was granted a special medal with the embarkation endorsed ‘Shaikh ISSA Medal’ after completing of 30 years of service. Carlito, who is a resident of Navelim passed the violin music examination and the trumpet music exam of 5th grade from St. Christopher Senior School, Academic Royal College Music (A.R.C.M.), London with flying colors. He was awarded the ‘Gulab’ award for Classical and Jazz music on 20th June, 2008. Currently, he can be spotted playing for our famous tiatrs, the more recent ones being Tony Dias’ Chint Chedva Chint, Milagres de Chandor’s Mhozo Ugdas Korat and Minnie Mario’s Ho Bazar Kiteak Cholta. He has also played for the Indian Film Industry. A dignified musician, Carlito feels that Goans should give support to their children when they show interest in learning a musical instrument. He says that there is no much scope for the profession of a musician in Goa or even India but abroad there is a huge demand. “It really takes talent and passion to pursue your goal”, exclaims Carlito. His 3-year old daughter loves playing the organ and hopes to teach her the trumpet when she grows up. He even teaches children who come to learn the trumpet at his place. “I feel proud to impart my knowledge of the trumpet to these young kids”, adds Carlito. So the next time you watch drama, do pay little attention to the musicians playing those melodious tunes. --- I had the opportunity of working with Carlito when I acted in Konkani Tiatros in Bahrain from 1972-1980. Goan musicians from the Bahrain Police Band, headed by the late Custodio Fernandes (guitar), Carlito (trumpet), late Cajy or Cajetan (drum) and others played for our tiatros in Bahrain. Custodio did not write solfas; so, he depended on Carlito and Cajy. Carlito is a very nice, quiet and down-to-earth person. The last time I saw him was when he played for “Padr Agnel” tiatro in Gaumvaddy in March 2008. I wish Carlito all the best in his life and in his career as a musician. [Goanet] GHANTTI
Today, we use the word ‘ghantti’ to refer to the migrants who arrive in Goa in search of work. According to our elders, the word “ghantti” meant ‘traveling carrier from the Ghats’. In those days goods also came from across the border via the land route. The ghantti often arrived at dusk with their bullocks, bells strung round their necks and loaded with bulging sacks on either side. The tinkling of the bells and group barking of dogs usually announced their arrival. When heard, one of the locals would say: “Ar’re ghatta voilo bapui eilo”, and the whole ward would wake up to greet the tired travelers. There were hardly any roads then; they mostly traveled through jungles. Thus, they would come across wild animals like tigers, leopards, wild boars, etc. Sometimes, they would have a narrow escape from wild animals, which they would narrate to the locals. The only weapon they carried with them was a “koito” (machete). They would unload their bullocks, bathe at natural springs, sit and relax under the trees and smoke and crack jokes. Sometimes they sought locals’ permission and spent nights in their verandahs, but they woke up at the first light of dawn, reloaded their bullocks and moved off in groups via Gaumvaddy, Anjuna on their journey into Maharashtra/Karnataka. They took with them coconuts, rice, salt fish, “maddanchem godd” (coconut jaggery), seasonal fruits like mangoes, etc. and local drinks. Once upon a time, not too long ago, we welcomed these traveling carriers from the Ghats but today we despise and label them as “ghantti”. Why? Do you know who is handling Goa’s manpower requirement today? I am currently building a house. Do you know who the workers are? With the exception of the contractor, Agnelo Britto, from Grande Peddem in Anjuna and his “mukhi gonvlli” (main mason), a Hindu from Morjim, the rest are all migrants. We have to think twice before we open a door – once opened; it’s difficult to close it. Some of the first post-liberation migrants to arrive in Goa were Keralite teachers, as we didn’t have enough teachers to teach in schools. We then had officers on deputation, mainly from Maharashtra State, who exercised nepotism and brought in as many relatives as they could and filled offices. And now we have construction workers in every field, including wood carvers, who arrive in Goa in hordes from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, etc. They have established themselves in Goa; so much so the manpower market is governed by them. Until last month, a laborer charged Rs.150 per day but now he charges Rs.200/day – a 25% increase, which has been accepted across the board in Goa! You now know who is ruling our state, but it is we who gave them that power. Let us not forget that when we point a finger at others three fingers point at us! I hope better sense will prevail among those who keep blowing their out of tune “pemprem” and they will stop propagating “aplench tambddem”! We started the mess and we are trying our best to fix it. “Sat somdir pois ravon fozne marinakat ani amkam formainakat”. (Don’t fire mortar from thousands of miles away and dictate us). If you want to improve the situation in Goa, come here and help us or else hold your peace and keep the pride for yourself. [Goanet] GHANTTI
Most readers understood my message except you because you are obsessed with 1961 and the previous regime! What the Portuguese could not do for us in 451 years, we Goans have achieved in the last 47 years, especially education and freedom. Did you ever write anything positive about Goa or India on this forum? You may be a Goan-Portuguese by birth but you have abrogated your birth right to another country by acquiring its citizenship. You may despise India and love your new country but we love our India. I once again repeat: If you want to improve the situation in Goa, India, come here and help us or stay wherever you are and enjoy your greener pastures; you have no right to meddle with us Indians. The readers will judge whether what I wrote in my previous post is childish. A child grows up and accepts the new world but you still behave like a child! I have not forgotten about toothpaste and toothbrushes - I use them regularly because I know how valuable they are to me! [Goanet] Fined for speaking Konkani
Fr. Ephraim was the Boarding Headmaster of St. Anthony’s High School in Monte de Guirim. He was the one who always strolled up and down the corridors of the school with a book in one hand and a cane in the other. It is true, we were not allowed to speak in Konkani and those who were caught were given cane-beating. Fr. Ephraim was a lefty. As soon as one was caught, he would ask him to stretch out his hand. He would then cane the student according to his mood. He mostly gave one cane on each hand, but if you moved away your hand and if he missed his shot, there was no count of canes – he would beat you everywhere! I was caught speaking Konkani only once. At around 8:00 pm, we were chatting in Konkani at the urinals which were quite far away from main corridors. We never expected Fr. Ephraim to come to that spot but there he was like a devil standing before us; his spectacles shining with reflection of light bulb. He looked at us and said: ‘Come on; come on; show me your hand’. He gave two canes to Michael Botelho but only one for me; maybe because I was caught for the first time. I am a great lover of Konkani. I was very sad when I was not allowed to speak or read Konkani novels in the school. When I was a boarder, I had to eagerly wait for the holidays to read Konkani “Romansi”. Contrary to what some have commented on this forum, I always felt the ban on Konkani was for our own good. No wonder, Monte de Guirim was the best school then in the whole of Goa! Sometime in the late Eighties, while I was employed with Aramco, one of the American colleagues showed me a Table of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results in which Goa had topped the list. He congratulated me on behalf of Goans on achieving the highest score, especially because it (the highest score) came from the smallest state in India. A decade ago, the minimum required TOEFL score at the end of the College Preparatory Program (CPP) in Saudi Aramco was 450. It was then changed to 500. Just before I left the CPP in last October, it was increased to 550. Besides other subjects - Algebra, Trigonometry, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, etc. getting the required score in TOEFL is a must or else one is not selected to go to the US to continue further studies. English instructors at the CPP are mostly Americans followed by British and Irish. However, we also have Arabic-speaking teachers who hail from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, etc. These Arabic-speaking teachers are strictly instructed at the initial orientation program not to speak Arabic to students or explain lessons in Arabic. They are also forbidden from chatting with students in Arabic during intervals. The students are required to speak English at all times – no Arabic within the faculty. If any student is found violating the rules, he is pulled up and sent to the Academic Counselor/Advisor Trainees, who explains him the benefit of speaking in English only and the repercussions otherwise. He is also warned and the meeting documented. If a teacher is found explaining in Arabic, he too is pulled up by the Principal and issued a warning notice. All this in the interest of the student! The Saudi students respect their teachers very much even if they have been harsh with them in the classroom. When they return to Saudi Arabia after their graduation in the States, they pay a special visit to the CPP faculty, ask for their teachers, meet with them and thank them individually for their guidance. Even when they get employed in the Company, they never call their teachers by their names; they just say: ‘Hi teacher!’ Today happens to be the Teachers’ Day. It’s all about expressing your gratitude towards your guide and to the person who prepared you for the world. On the occasion of the Teachers’ Day, I extend my greetings and best wishes to the teaching fraternity of Goa. Happy Teachers’ Day! [Goanet] Orissa attacks: What our fellow brethren say?
Ancy D'Souza ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote: I can remember when I volunteered (NSS) for a school ground construction somewherenear Venur, Moodabidri we used to stay in a Convent. There was one Father called Fr.William (if my memory was right), he used to play hindu suprabhatams in church justkeeping in mind there were hindu volunteers. Ancy, his name is Fr. William Martis. He is from Malpe. He was an LIC Manager. He joined priesthood at the age of 38. He is a close friend of mine. He sports a long white beard. He spent seven years in Venur parish. He was their father, brother, friend, lawyer, guide, and judge. In short, he was everything to his parishioners regardless whether they were Christians, Hindu or Muslims. They took their troubles to him and he sorted them out for them. He even marched to the police station to demand justice for his parishioners, and he succeeded: Why, because they were all united, regardless of their religion. When he was transferred from Venur to Mulky, parishioners arranged a big farewell reception for him. The Bishop of Mangalore was present for the reception. I was one of the invited guests for the event. Fifteen minutes before the mass could commence, I saw a large procession head towards the church preceded by a brass band. As the procession approached the church, I saw three separate processions with three separate brass bands. When I asked why there were three processions, I was told they represented the three communities of the parish – Christians, Hindus and Muslims. All of them entered the church, attended the mass and ate lunch, which was served on the floor of the church on banana leaves. Fr. Martis was so overwhelmed with their presence that he cried when he gave the farewell speech. You won’t believe he received one truck-load of gifts, which he distributed to the poor. I never saw such religious harmony anywhere in my lifetime and perhaps will never see. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Kuttombachem Zhadd ... what does one call one's sister-in-law's husband? Dear Miguel, Thanks for your kind words on my book. The answer to your question is ‘saddu’. Here is an excerpt from the article: The saddu (wife's sister's husband) relationship is usually neutral, unless there is a tug of war between the two due to wealth, status, or some such factor. In such a case, if anyone asks: Arre Forsu, tuzo saddu kosso assa? (Hey Francis, how is your wife's sister's husband,) the well-to-do saddu could reply sarcastically: Mozo saddu atam marta zaddu! (My saddu now sweeps the floor!) If the public knows of the rift between the two, they comment: Dogui saddu atam zaleat koddu. (Brother-in-laws have now turned embittered.) [Goanet] Lyrics of Konkani song Dadar sung by late Jacinto Vaz and Sucurrine

(Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Sucurrine has been around for almost four decades now. She is a class stage artist. She is one of the gutsiest actresses of the Konkani stage. She imitated M. Boyer and went on to become the top comedienne of the Konkani stage, which ultimately resulted in a bitter rivalry between the two so much so M. Boyer would refuse to act in a tiatro if Sucurrine participated in it. One person’s loss is other person’s gain – the late Jacinto Vaz grabbed the opportunity and paired with Sucurrine. Although she is much younger to him, she acted with him quite often; they made a good comedy pair. The following lyrics of the song “Dadar” taken from the audio cassette “GOENCHO AVAZ” is a love song between Jacinto Vaz and Succurrine, which originates at the famous Dadar (Railway) station. “DADAR” sung by the late Jacinto Vaz Sucurrine Legend: Sucurrine = S; Jacinto = J I S: Moga tum Goeam vetai, kalliz mojem dukoitai Rokddoch ieo, chodd teomp ravonakai J Sodd dasti bhienakai, tunch vortovta suropai Ekuch mhuino rojea mevlea bai S: Goeam vetuch tum konnamcheai mogan poddxi Inocent kalliz mojem moga tum roddoixi J: Tunvuim bore baxen rav dusreak vengent dhorxi Mogacho Jacint mhunnon tum mhaka fottoixi Chorus SJ:Kalliz moga zata hem abalar Kednam zatelim sang ami kazar Dogaim goribponnamchea nadar Mog kelo ami ixttixinar Dadar II S: Moga tum atam vetai tor, sanglam tem ghott motin dhor Hanvui ietam mhakai vhor barabor J: Motin muzo niall kor, visorchonam morosor Hanv tuzo, dogaim sonvsarant asosor J: Goeam vetoch moga kitem haddum tem sang tuka S: Kaim ek naka moga fokot tunch zavo mhaka J: Kiteak moga oxem suskar soddun bexttench roddta S: Goeam vetoch tum bodolxi mhunn bhirant dista Chorus SJ:Ghevnakai tum mathear chintnancho bhar Mogak amchea dusman asat sabar Devan bhesanv ghalchem hea ekvottar Mog kelo dekun ixttixinar Dadar III S: Fottoixi moga mog korun, roddoixi dusreak dhorun Sarkem sang kednam ieta to portun J: Roddonakai suskar soddun, rokddoch ietam mudans korun Mogachem dor uddonvchonam katrun S: Hanv gorib mhunnon moga tum mhaka visorxi Ozaranim doth mevta Goeam dothik bhulxi Anik tuka kaim sangonam tujich khoxi J: Kiteak bextench tum ulas soddtai mojea Lucy Chorus SJ:Rat-dis moga chintnancho bhar Kednam ugoddttelem mogachem dar Novembrachea mhuinean amchem kazar Poiloch mog amcho ixttixinar Dadar From Dom’s antique shelf! [Goanet] Konkani joke CHOPKO BHOR CHONNEM (Handful of grams)
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Somehow the last line of the joke went missing; hence, posted again. CHOPKO BHOR CHONNEM (Handful of grams) Khornan bazlele chonnem (oven-fried grams) are Goans' favorite. As children, we always carried them in our pockets on our way to playfield. We eat them while we relax and chat, and with afternoon tea. Drinkers eat them as chakna with their drinks. Like nuts, they taste very good in the monsoon season. Anyone who visited Friday Mapusa bazaar would not and does not return home without buying at least one podd (a wooden measure) bazlele chonnem. Similarly, it's a must purchase at every feast fair in Goa. In the past, we usually stored them in a glass bottle, which was closed with a “guddi” (cork) so they remained sealed and fresh/crispy. These days, people store them in tins or plastic containers; thus, “kednaim te xelletat” (sometimes they become stale/soft). One day a mother went to Mapusa Friday bazaar with her young son. She decided to buy four “poddi” oven-fried grams. Since she was buying quite a big quantity, the “chonnekar” (grams vendor) kept on asking her son to take a handful of grams from the pile but the boy wouldn't. We know children are very clever so much so sometimes they outsmart their parents. No wonder they say “ek aikonchem khuim lhan-hachem nam zalear vhodd-hachem” (you listen either to a junior or senior). The following Konkani joke taken from Joe Rose’s audio cassette “Kantaram ani katkutleo” tells us why the boy wouldn’t take a handful of grams despite being forced: CHOPKO BHOR CHONNEM (Handful of grams) Ek bail aplea dakttea putak ghevn Mapxeam bazaran geli. Tinnem evzilem chear poddi chonnem ghevnk mhunnon. Itle sogott chonnem gheta mhunnon, tea chonnekaran tichea putak oxem mhuttlem: Chonnekar: Ar’re! Ek chopko mar’re, tuka thodde kadd re! Music streams through the blood of every Goan and this seed is planted from a young age. In schools, music is encouraged whether it be singing, playing an instrument or creating beats. Goans’ love for music can be heard both day and night, not only in the houses but also at social occasions. In the past, no wedding reception was complete without young local singers singing a “Saud” song. One of the Konkani stage artists who rose to fame by singing “Saud” songs at weddings was the Guirim boy - Young Chico. Here are the lyrics of a Konkani song “SAUD” taken from the audio cassette “GOENCHO AVAZ”. These are the last lyrics of Jacinto Vaz’s songs I have with me. If anyone has more, please post them on this forum. “SAUD” - Composed and sung by the late Jacinto Vaz Dialog: Aiz zoddlo tumi kazaracho satvo sacrament. Half a century ago, females could befriend females but they couldn’t befriend men – not at least publicly. Today, women are equal to men in every respect. Barring a few states, men and women mix freely without any restrictions. Of course, freedom comes with a price tag attached to it and this is why we have more problems today like eloping, committing suicide, etc than in the past when lovers kept up their promises and stuck to each other till the end. At one time, the good old saying 'variety is the spice of life', was applied to men only but now it is applicable to women as well. The following short Konkani joke taken from Joe Rose’s audio cassette “Kantaram ani Katkutleo” talks about Julius’ girlfriend who probably had more boyfriends than she could count: “POILOCH MOGI” (First lover) Julius ek tornatto zavn aslo. To poiloch mogan poddlo, tednam tannem aple voklek vincharlem: Julius: Mojea moga, tum khorench sangtai ki hanv tuzo poiloch mogi mhunnon? Vokol: Hoi! Julius: Khorench! Vokol: Hoi; khorench! Dear netters, At the very outset, I thank you all for your warm greetings and good wishes on my 60th birthday. After spending 35 years in the Gulf region (8 years in Bahrain and 27 in Saudi Arabia), it’s time for me to bid adieu to the place. Having joined the Senior Citizens’ Club on October 4, 2007, I am retiring from the job and leaving the KSA for good at the end of this month, and proceeding to settle down in my beloved native place – Anjuna, Bardez, Goa. I joined Goanet four years ago and I must say it was a thrilling experience; I enjoyed it thoroughly - I came, I saw and I definitely learned a lot. I shared my life experiences with fellow Goans through my writings, which eventually were captured into a book – “Domnic’s Goa – A nostalgic romp through a bygone era”. It was your love and confidence that made it happen. I take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to my readers and well-wishers who have been my constant support and without whom the book would be meaningless. I hope the sale of my book picks up so I can look forward to publish a sequel of more reminiscences – a trilogy! I am grateful to Goanet, which served me as a platform from which I e-published my thoughts - be they in English or Konkani. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Herman Carneiro and the Admin team. My special thanks go to Bosco D’Mello who was always there for me when I needed him to assist and guide me through. Since October 2004, my writings appeared on the Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gulf-goans and http://www.goa-worldcom) which is run by Goa-World. I thank Gaspar Almeida for his continued support and for decorating my articles with pictures. Before I conclude, I humbly request that we support each other and work as one Goan community and not partisan groups - united we stand; divided we fall. Let our writings be Goa-centered/related and let our discussion/participation be value-based rather than flippant. Let us learn to respect each other. Remember, we cannot command respect – we have to earn it. Let us think twice before we hit the keyboard and create a furor on the net. We, as people, have much to be proud of, in our rich cultural heritage which we must preserve. The Internet is a good tool which connects people throughout the globe. Let us use this tool to spread our culture to the world and not to destroy each other. Likewise, let us utilize the forum to promote our beloved mother tongue – the Konkani language. I shall be shuttling between Goa and Karnataka and will be available at the following two addresses: GAUMCHI-ARADDI ANJUNA BARDEZ GOA-403 509 Tel: 0091-832-2273922 Mobile: 9448261599 (Temporary) “VALDEN” NH 17, KAPPETTU P.O. [Goanet] Good-bye my friend, Sanny
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened my email today and read that our mogacho Sanny de Quepem was no more. Although I never met Sanny, we exchanged a couple of messages and he had agreed to meet with me in Goa on his next vacation, but alas that will never happen now. Sanny’s death is a great loss to the Goan community all over the world, as he kept us informed of the day-to-day happenings in Goa through his continuous postings. Sanny’s image and his outstanding work will remain with us for a long time. My family and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May Sanny’s soul rest in eternal peace. Checking every now and then the details of your property on On-Line Form I XIV or obtaining a computerized Form I XIV from a 'Mahiti Ghar' is not enough. You must also obtain a hand-written Form I XIV from your concerned Talathi; it is one of the requirements when applying for deletion of previous owner's name. If you don't do that, you could be in for a surprise, as there is every possibility the Talathi may have been bribed and he may have added new name(s) or even entered deceased party's siblings' name(s) on the Form, in case of an 'Inventario'! [Goanet] CHRISTMAS IN ANJUNA IN THE 1950's!
that word was fulfilled on that day. That very cold night, while the shepherds were grazing their sheep, all of a sudden they heard a sweet voice from far afar and with it the whole sky was filled with light and they heard the angels sing a song: Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to all persons of goodwill. That very midnight, three wise men who were traveling on their camels towards the east, suddenly noticed a strange star which would halt at times and then advance. They continued to look at it with awe; the star wanted to convey some message to them. As forecasted by the prophets, the shepherds carried gifts with them and proceeded towards Bethlehem. On the other hand, that star, which the three wise men had been following, halted exactly above a stable in Bethlehem city. So, what did they see in that stable? The Son of God was lying on straw in the manger wrapped in papers with a smile on his face; he was surrounded by animals and by his adopted father and mother Mary. God sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to this world to redeem us from sin. Yes, he is the King of Kings and shelter of sinners who was born in a manger without a single piece of cloth on his body and yet he was smiling. The King of Kings humbled himself for our sake. He requests us to lead a humble life and to follow Him. When we say Happy Birthday to Jesus, let us try to bring about a change and improve our lives. Let us adore Jesus and promise him to purify ourselves by singing the following Konkani devotional song: Ontroll pettlam noketranim Uzvadd atvech torecho Boddve gaitat gaionnam Sorv thavn sorgincho Sondes dita sogott munxeak Sondes khuxealkaiecho Moronn nhoi amcho xevott Punn oromb sasnnanchea jivitacho Glo-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ria In excelcis Deo Glo-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ria In excelcis Deo Here is a beautiful Christmas Carol in which the late Jim Reeves explains the meaning of each of the letters of the word Christmas: CHRISTMAS by the late Jim Reeves C is for the Christ child, born upon this day H is for Herald angels in the night R is our Redeemer I means Israel S is for the star that shone so bright T is for three wise men, they who traveled far M is for the manger where he lay A is for all he stands for S means shepherds came And thats why there is a Christmas day T is for three wise men, they who traveled far M is for the manger where he lay A is for all he stands for S means shepherds came And thats why there is a Christmas day And thats why there is a Christmas day Let us in a simple way distribute Christmas gift of love with our families and enjoy the true happiness. Let us also share our love with fellow neighbors, especially with the poor and the downtrodden, partake in their worries and sorrows and show our brotherly love towards them. Let this be our gift to the Infant Jesus; Mother Mary will definitely be pleased with us. I wish one and all a Joyous Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year!
