Hello Nikolaus, > The question is if you are searching for the right thing. I already found it. More than 12 years ago by accident in the Nokia 6233. But how can you trigger the modem to make rogue activities to check if they are detected? I completely disagree! The fact that the fundamental nature of rogue activities is that they CANNOT be triggered by you, because the roguishness persist exactly in the fact that it will be triggered by others, consequently results in the NEED for exactly this stuff. The proceeding is quite simple: You claim anything to be weird that you don't understand. Just an ordinary trial-and-error approach. And this stuff is exactly what you need for that! >> It just needs a look behind the big firewall of China. I claim the situation there is already apocalyptic. >> And it's no dream anymore. The book "The Shockwave Rider" meanwhile is more than 40 years old and the described scenario is independent from any concrete political situation. It rather depicts a general interplay between evolution of technology on the one hand and degenerating of freedom of society on the other hand. So there's no reason not to fear that this could also happen to us. In fact it's just a question of time. >>> Therefore we simply must restart with something as a big team. >> >> Yes, indeed. I heavily doubt that a pure materialistic benefit is the reason for the need of a clear outlook. Instead of that I assume that the real need for it is a result out of the individual fun factor of programming: You need a means for synchronizing all the individuals in some way. So you need to place milestones and you need to make transparent if or how much they have been reached in order to prevent exactly that diffusing that you have here in this project. Once again I claim that it was a failure to declare it as an project for arbitrary tinkering on anything that vaguely looks or acts like a phone. > Well, my vision for QtMoko2 would be: > > * modernized base: latest kernels, latest development tools, latest Debian as basis > * remove bugs - just make it work out-of-the-box > * modularized: just apt-get install what you want to have (or even write a GUI app for that - sort of an Appstore) > * runs on different hardware (existing and upcoming) > > IMHO a lot of aspects to work for. +1 > In the early days, the benefit of QtMoko was to get something which did not exist before (besides iOS 1.0 and Android 0.5). [Gta04-owner] QtMoko2
Hello Nicolaus, > So let's people popup here and tell they want to help to continue QtMoko! but the question is: On which hardware? > As far as I know the Neo900 project has starved to death. this is the basic problem. GTA04 cannot work with 4G and we all know that 2G as well as 3G frequencies will be switched off in the next couple of years due to the needs for 5G. So GTA04 has no long-term future anymore. Not to mention all the soldering problems with GTA04A5. Neo900 would have been the consequent successor for the GTA04, because it was the only project that reflected that in order to build a mobile phone that you can trust to the most crucial thing is the modem. This project planned to take precautions for every nastiness of which we know about at least since Edward Snowden for driving its 4G modem. This still wouldn't have been effective against some nastinesses of which even Edward Snowden didn't know about, but that's another theme. In my eyes all other projects like Librem5 are only bullshit. Their only purpose is to cause confusion and to deflect from the basic problem: The modem! But Neo900 died and noone knows to where all the money has gone to that they collected. And meanwhile times have changed to be even worse: Not only that people don't consider about the trustworthiness of their phone. No, they now even buy phones and watches that measure their health state, by constantly transmitting data about heartbeat, temperature, skin resistance and so on to many fancy servers all around the world. Noone of them worries about the possible consequences. So we're consequently walking into scenarios like these: The GPS of your phone transmits that you entered a supermarket. The health sensors suddenly transmit that your heartbeat and your temperature is rising and your skin resistance is falling. Some fancy server transmits an alert message to the security of the supermarket because it assumes that you have stolen something. They come to you in order to search your clothes and don't believe you that you only got a hay fever attac at the flower storage rack. So who wants still support QtMoko2? Perhaps best thing would be to read the book "The Shockwave Rider" from John Brunner (again) and by this time reconsider that mankind manged to organize itself without mobile phone for thousands of years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shockwave_Rider The picture on the cover of the German version already tells everything, so I attached it... Hello Nicolaus, a) I emphasized NeronGPS because I cannot tell you if the associated timer problem might be existent. I can only tell you that the navigation is still working properly. b) I'm still dreaming of having my GTA04A5 working with sound, properly. The descriptions that Andreas Kemnade sent some months ago didn't help me, because I'm not such deeply familiar with all the details and for this reason I simply didn't understand most of what he meant. But if I understand the whole situation correctly, then it's like this: There're exactly three persons still interested in this project: - You, who always release new kernel versions, - Andreas Kemnade, who practically uses the phone at his bicycle, - and me, who uses new software only when presented palatablely (in order to be honest). All other members of this list are tinkering with many other tinkering phones or are waiting for advertised phenomenal completely new phones that will never come (like the Neo900), and for this reason are just diffusing the whole movement in every imaginable direction. That's simply much too little for keeping the project going forward... :-( Best regards Sven Von:"H. [Gta04-owner] Some more trials with QtMoko2
Hello Nikolaus, meanwhile I had the time to play around a little bit more with QtMoko2. Here're my findings: While booting QtMoko v55 from SD card, it shows a nice little SD card with QtMoko logo in the middle of the screen. While booting QtMoko2 from SD card, I'll only get a small blinking cursore at the upper left corner. Why? When I open "Settings"/"Language" in QtMoko v55, I'll get a list with 9 languages. QtMoko2 only shows me "English" and nothing more. Are there some language configuration files missing in the QtMoko2 package? SMS sending as well as receiving works properly. I scp'ed an mp3 to the "/home/root/Documents" folder. When I call "Documents" and select "Rescan system" from the menu, it will appear as expected. But when touching the mp3, the Media Player will hang at 0:00 / 0:00 and will not start to play it. I tried the same mp3 with QtMoko v55. There the Media Player will automatically start and play the file. I guess it's a consecutive fault of this, that indeed I can initiate as well as receive telephone calls, but will neither get a ringtone (vibra works well), nor hear anything from what the other side talks. Interestingly microphone works well. The other side can always hear what I'm talking. We all know that for a smooth motion presentation 20 to 25 Hz are needed at least! Indeed. I did a test to install letux-3.7-neil-plus-plus kernel on the µSD with latest QtMoko and (after haking some boot problems), I could run evtest /dev/input/accel as well. It looks as if it is much more often reporting accelerometer events (ca. 15ms) than the 4.16 kernel (ca. 100-200ms). This means either the chip drivers or the input event system has changed - or both. And I had found a bug in Radek's original GTA04 code which is less a problem for fast accelerometer reports but for those coming more rarely. But neither change has the effect of making the graphics faster and smoother. So there is likely a third factor involved when comparing to GTA02. Hello Nikolaus, my GTA04A5 shows exactly the same behaviour as shown in your videos. My GTA04A4 shows exactly the same behaviour as shown in the Freerunner video. Now gta04-qtmoko has 82679 files and its size is 1 GB. I already assumed that there must be lots of stuff missing... So just for summarizing in case that there are also others in this list who need a "QtMoko sources for bloody Dummies" manual: git clone git://git.goldelico.com/gta04-qtmoko.git cd gta04-qtmoko git submodule init git submodule update does the whole trick! Would be nice if you could put that to your http://projects.goldelico.com/p/gta04-qtmoko/ No need to mention how to build that at this point. Just for beginning to have QtMoko2 pages with current information... ;-) I don't intend to build that whole stuff at this time. I only want to understand what I have under my fingers. Qt was something that again and again crossed my way during my work, and up to now every time I pushed it aside due to other priorities. But there instead of being able to jockey a ball into a hole by nicely tilting the phone, QtMoko hang up completely at once and reliably reproducible . Only removing the battery will be able to wake it up again. Well, it might use the accelerometer chip and the new code may not have been updated to "understand" the different chips or kernel API of the GTA04A5. Should not be very difficult to fix. Maybe you can install: http://git.goldelico.com/?p=gta04-qtmoko.git;a=blob;f=scripts/qpe-debug;h=139441e573ebb6d860f8de8dbc840bbf4a4867d2;hb=407fc14951fb30b9b7b0fb9259efa212c0ce4c09 on the SD card and ssh into the device and then run /root/qpe-debug. Then QtMoko should come up as usual but will not suspend and print more logs. Maybe there is a helpful log entry before/when QtMaze hangs. So now the dump question is: Who will clone some developers who fix such insignificant but aggravating regressions? Might it really be that even such irrelevant trivia (in regard to their importance, of course not in regard to the time and effort for a developer) will all stick at Nikolaus? Hello Nikolaus, > Phew. Got an even longer answer but I hope it helps all of us to get back patience and enthusiasm. many thanks for all your efforts! Meanwhile I again feel much better. Getting some distance helps very much. Nevertheless I'll answer much more shortly in this mail. Thank you for all the technical hints and aspects. But I need much more time in order to get the head free again to think abaout them (and especially reload much more swap space into my short memory for this purpose...). At this time I can only tell you that I find all your arguments reasonable and traceable. Will focus on much more general things in this mail. > quality (testing) is what you really pay for in commercial software. There you can expect and request that there are no significant faults because you pay for. Ooops! Did you ever use Windows? You'll find very early that Micro$oft uses you as cheap beta tester! > See Windows updates for Meltdown/Spectre patches which freeze the PC. Or MacOS updates which looses the complete mailbox. Exactly this is what I meant...;-) > Yes, this is why I have invested so much personal time to get QtMoko 2 compiling and running again. > Because I think that it may be 8 years old, but it still is the best Phone GUI we have which is completely community driven. > Replicant may be technically much more mature and has Fdroid with many apps, but we are still depending on API definitions set by Google. I fully agree in every aspect!!! As long as you keep Finxi theme alive... ;-) > If you (and others) give more help, documentation and internet pages *can* be improved. If someone takes care of it. My idea some years ago was to create my completely own pages in the internet about the GTA04, which advertise it so that it's really attractive and technically informative. But I never started this project, because more and more I came to the conclusion, that all the people who blame your pages to be "crap", in fact have a completely different or at least much deeper aversion than the look of your internet pages. Meanwhile you can express the situation very clear and easy by just quoting some latest economic values: In Germany every year 24 million smartphones are being sold. The population of Germany is about 80 million people, resulting in the following statistics: - More than 60% own their smartphone less than one year. - Less than 20% own their smartphone more than two years. - Spending money for smartphones and accessories meanwhile will given much more priority than spending money for everything else, including clothes, food, etc. Only spending money for voyages will be seen as similar relevant. You can see the results every day in the pedestrian areas and busses of our cities: People in uncharitable and cheap clothes like jogging pants staying, sitting or walking around without notifying anything else except the displays of their phones and without doing anything else than typing something on them. Meanwhile my opinion to all that is: This is not anymore just a hype. This already is psychopathic! You'll need an army of doctors in order to therapy that heavy addiction! Or alternatively you can just consider all the extremely seldom and hard to get materials that are inside these phones. Materials, where you need to dig over thousands of tons of rocks in order to get some milligrammes of them. Of course by using machines driven by Diesel, not by solar power. And where you need millions of cubic metres of water in order to wash these some few milligrammes out of the rubble. Not to mention all the other highly poisonous and aggressive chemicals. Not to meantion that nearly all of the countries where these materials come from are contries which are affected by war. Then just think about the possibility that mother earth might say "Enough is enough!" and nature modifies the climate some more, so that its voice can finally be heared by all people. In worst case these people are such absorbed in their smartphones, that they first need to die before they notice that facebook (German: "Fratzebuch") is nothing else than a giant gully for energy of live. > Please contribute to that work! You are really welcome. > As soon as you have more time to spend on it. We did wait 5 years so there is no need to hurry. I'm still in love with QtMoko's Finxi theme. And I'm still hoping that Neo900 will be available some day, so that my 450 EUR will not be lost. But perhaps you now got a little impression that my priorieties currently are a little bit different... Nevertheless will reserve some time for you, as soon as you reworked the makesd script. ;-) > BR and sorry again for the trouble. If we meet some time in person, I'll spend you a beer :) Is it naughty to tell you that I don't like beer? I'm not from Bavaria, I'm from Rheingau. So I prefer wine and especially cocktails. [Gta04-owner] Helldriving with basic and essential scripts
Hello Nikolaus and Andreas, > sudo does not pass the variables on (security reasons, you could do funny things). > So makesd did not know about your DEV=/dev/sdg indeed I aghastly realized that this was the mistake I made. Admittedly a stupid oversight. But easily to understand: sudo is a command that if you use it at all, you'll ever use it in the most restrictively way possible! So of course especially if you're in a hurry or stupid (or both) you don't think about sudo'ing a whole command line but only a single command! > makesd should simply have no default for DEV and not do anything if not set. To tell it in clear words: NEVER NEVER NEVER a script should access any path that the user never had provided by himself except "." !!! It's in no way acceptable that a script - especially if it's such basic and essential - contains hardcoded paths that are valid on no other machine than the one of the developer!!! Especially not for doing actions like deleting and/or formatting!!! It was an incredible luck that my now erased harddisc /dev/sdc mostly had been backuped. But still it contained some data that are lost now! By a hair it could have affected another external harddisc of mine that I need for my daily work. It would have been an horrific catastrophe if this would have been affected!!! I currently don't have time left over to we wasted for doing huge recovery cycles!!! > do not automatically use /dev/sdc if no device is specified > instead print usage and an error message. I would even accept if in such a case the script would use ".", resulting in writing the rootfs into the local directory from where the script had been called, because this would just follow the principle GIGO: Garbage in - garbage out! But why does it want to have such an essential parameter like the path to be erased and formatted as environment variable at all??? Why not pass it as commandline parameter? You can easily also pass an environment variable by that way! > Well, it has to have some default because if you make 20 sd cards > per day, every keystroke counts. And in 19 times you type > /dev/sdg correctly and then you mistype /dev/sdh + Enter. > > So it needs some default you do not have to think about too much. Ok, I understand. But then I strongly suggest a parameter like "--hell" for activating such hardcoded values that are valid on your machine only!!! > There is already a secondary default which reads the file ~/.makesd.conf > to set such a default. And the /dev/sdc is only used if that file > does not exist or is empty. > > I have already updated the documentation page because that > feature is available for a while. Sorry Nikolaus, but for using a command that had been suggested per mail as a quick hack, I don't expect to be expected to read a documentation first. I already hesitated several days before I decided to overcome my doubts and just try it, although already at the first glance I could see that the line was suspicious. Then I did one small step after the other in order to avoid exactly such disasters! > Well, it is impossible to perfectly prevent erasing the wrong device, because only the user can know what the SD card reader with an SD really is. Exactly because of that a script never should dare to fool you!!! > I usually use an SD card reader of some SBC where I did ssh root access to so I never thought > about needing sudo. Ok, that explains many things. Especially it confirms that my decision was right to first get a night of sleep before I tell you how exorbitant furious I am currently be. Seems to need the whole weekend in order to come down again! > Maybe we should add a check that you really have write access to the specified device. As a Linux user you don't expect such actually self-evident things anymore, especially not on the raw developer's side. But meanwhile you can expect Linux to reliably act in the already mentioned way GIGO: Stupid users will get stupid results. But normally no disasters anymore like in early days. > There is at least one protection: you can't overwrite /dev/sda. Under Linux indeed this can already be seen as luxury. Every other user would expect this as minimum safety. > So it is equally risky as calling fdisk directly. The risk here is a completely other: From experience the parameters of fdisk are highly dependent on the Linux version that you're using. So my first question was: Will the script work properly on my system? But once again: Never you would expect to get devices accessed that you never specified!!! >> Why "fsck.ext2"? My QtMoko v55 and v57 SD cards had already been formatted with "fsck.ext4". So even "fsck.ext3" would have been outdated. > > No idea. The script only calls fsck.ext3. For me your one simple makesd-line resulted in the following: 1.) Assumed that my some years old makesd is completely outdated. So searched for a current one and found: http://projects.goldelico.com/p/gta04-makesd/ Thus did the folowing actions: wget -O makesd " http://git.goldelico.com/?p=gta04-makesd.git;a=blob_plain;hb=HEAD;f=makesd " chmod a+x makesd ./makesd -u Success! Ok, that was easy. 2.) Clean the SD card with the v55 clone completely: sudo dd of=/dev/sdg if=/dev/zero bs=1M conv=fsync After that all the partitions have been gone. Again easy success. 3.) Execute your suggestion: DEV=/dev/sdg makesd qtmoko -r http://download.goldelico.com/letux-debian-rootfs/20180224-wheezy-7.11-armhf-qtmoko.tbz Result: "Command makesd not found". Ok, that's understandable. So modify your suggestion to: DEV=/dev/sdg ./makesd qtmoko -r http://download.goldelico.com/letux-debian-rootfs/20180224-wheezy-7.11-armhf-qtmoko.tbz Result: unknown option: -r http://download.goldelico.com/letux-debian-rootfs/20180224-wheezy-7.11-armhf-qtmoko.tbz useage:... ... root file system (OS): -r ... -r qtmoko ... macros for single partition cards: ... qtmoko = -f ext4 -r qtmoko -d all -k latest (does not need config) ... Hello Andreas, thank you for your offer. But I think the most easy way would be to boot the complete system (including current bootloader) from SD card with just having switched off the auto-flash option for the bootloader. As far as I remember this auto-flash option is coded somewhere in the additional scripts around the bootloader. So I don't want to bother you with my extremely short memory. One of the reasons why studied computer science is that it allows me to outsource my memory into the machine. So everything has been archived well by me. I just need the time to reload that swap space into my memory again by combing through that stuff. But it's a question of time... Hello Nikolaus, > Well, we also don't have too much spare time to hand it on a silver platter :) Please don't misunderstand me. I never expected a silver platter. I just tried a first naive test with minimal effort. I understand very well that I failed and thus need to reconsider much stuff, that has been well archived by me, but simply never used again for several years, now. I'm also willing to think about kernel versions by myself. All the according previous mails from you have been archived by me. Now it seems to be the time that I begin to read them again, at least the last ones. But I need to beg you to understand that for the moment having a well working GTA04 is more important for me than trying out new things. Due to the lack of time I need to avoid everything that could brick the well running v55 system. So I need to go one small step after the other. First step would be to update the bootloader. Will do that not before I'm sure to know again how to reflash the old one in case that the new one will cause problems with v55. What means that unfortunately it might take weeks or months until I can tell you some test results... Best regards Sven Von:"H. I can remember that after changing the build sequence to use hardflow toolchain, Finxi theme was disfunctional for some time and required Radek to do some magic in order to get it running again in a later release. But never the theme was lost completely. Well, the issue was that the theme .deb files were built but they were lost on the multi-stage journey from the SBC (where they were compiled) to the download server... They ended up in the wrong directory and did not become visible/accessible. I have not yet checked if they work, but "apt-get install qtmoko-theme-finximod" does succeed (you may need "apt-get update" first). I'm asking because without Finxi theme I rather will keep going on with the pretty and stable v55 for now. I would enjoy to support you again with some testing and I'm also willing to risc some regressions, as long as a) I can be sure that after replacing the old v55 SD card my system behaves like usual again and b) I can do the testing with Finxi theme... ;-) That is difficult to answer since I have no v55 system running and have not yet tried the Finxi theme. Hello Nikolaus, I did good old and _reliable_ bank transfer to Neo900 UG _after_ all the trouble with separating them from GD. I don't want to recall money as long as I can down-to-earth expect to get a NEO900 within a reasonable time, because I pay much respect to all of you guys. Well, I can't say much on this since i am no longer directly involved in the Neo900 project. I do only irregularily follow neo900.org (which is indeed not updated often), the maemo forums and IRC. Therefore I do only know that the Neo900 core team has found someone to work on the prototype PCB layout. Did you pay directly to Neo900 UG since I can't find you on the original Neo900 orders in my shop? Then you should negotiate with them about a (partial?) refund first. We will produce 20 units in a first step (to verify that production and A5 hardware and layout changes work) and then another run (hoping that it does not need anything to be redone). Another good news is that we can offer a new camera module that appears to be compatible. Will be made available soon in our shop. Finally, our workshop last weekend was successful and is a basis that we will see new software (QtMoko2) soon.
