[h-cost] pseudo historic costume

2010-08-01 Thread landofoz

the only costume sewing I've done this year is for my daughter's 4H costume.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/21642...@n06/4833605329/

She fit the costume and made the armor and accessories and cut out all the
silver fabric applique. I had to iron it on because she melted the first
one, and I sewed the seams just to save needles and/or a trip to the repair
shop. (she's a rather careless seamstress)

Sadly (for us), the girl behind her won the class

Re: [h-cost] Reviving the crispness of silk

2010-06-01 Thread landofoz
Spritzing it with water and ironing fairly hot will bring back a lot of the
shine and a little of the crispness, but I think the residual sericin in the
fiber contributes to the stiffness and when you wash or dye more of it gets
removed.

Denise

I have some lovely embroidered silk that was crisp and shiny, and
nearly white that I purchased some time ago. After much
consideration, I dyed it another cloth because the color was not
suitable to me. Of course, now I have a not so shiny, and soft, almost
a crepe texture to the silk. I haven't tried to do anything with it
yet, but are there any suggestions of getting at least the crispness
back? My first thought is to gently press and starch, but I don't
know how silk and starch deal with each other over time...

Any help greatly appreciated

Just judged a history event last weekend, and I'm surprised that students
no longer seem to know about print sources. Could she get some of what
she

needs from them? Examples--Time-Life Books did a series a while ago about
life in different decades, and I would be surprised if they weren't in
your

public library. And, if you are anywhere near a large city public library
or university/college library, you should be able to access original
magazines and newspapers on microfilm. Most university/college libraries
allow

access for library use only.

Teachers encourage them to find everything on the web. The assignment is
created on the laptop provided by the school, submitted electronically, etc.
If they were to use a book source, they would have to find a scanner to
capture the image, save the file, etc. before using it in their assignment.
You know how all that extra clicking with the mouse can wear a person
out...:-/

As for the public library, I'd be surprised if they *were* there - even in
the larger public library in the university town. Public libraries spend
very little of their budget on non-fiction these days. Computers, computer
programs, computer upkeep, and dvd titles take up much of the budget after
popular fiction and children's books.

Re: [h-cost] Washing linen trousers

2010-01-25 Thread landofoz
Dry cleaning is a process that maintains all/most of the finishes put on
the

fabric during the mfg process; this is the answer I got form our regional
manger after I asked why linen/wool/silk (which all existed for centuries
before drycleaning was invented) were always so marked on the bolts. The
fabric -will- change when you wash it- shrink/get fuzzy/twist etc; which
is

why all the books tell you to pre wash fabric before cutting- I usually
advise washing a piece to see if you can live with the change, but it is
too
late for you to do that. So, if you like them the way they are, I am
afraid

the Dry Cleaner is in your future; if you want to gamble on the result you
can wash them, but they will not come out the same.

I disagree. Manufacturers are required by law to state a washing method on
the care label. They are also required to provide documentation that the
stated method will not harm the clothing over the expected lifetime of the
garment. If they chose to state dry clean only they are not required to
do the extensive (or *as* extensive) testing necessary to prove the method
is suitable.

Often companies choose dry clean only as a cost/time saving choice for
them, not because it's the only or best way to clean the garment. I also
suspect that many high end lines recommend that method as an indicator of
quality (right or wrong) as perceived by their intended customer base. There
are *many* people who dry clean EVERYTHING except socks and underwear.

I would venture that handwashing the trousers in cold water would cause no
damage, especially since the owner is willing to press/starch as needed.

Re: [h-cost] laundry implements was RE: OT regional English for mangle

I think our laundry sprinkler came from Tupperware.

My mom used to always tell a story about her friend who went to Catholic
school - she was the only girl in a large family and was responsible for all
the ironing. She would dampen all the boy's shirts, then keep them in the
freezer. She would always leave the ironing till the last minute, so she
only dampened the collar, front facing and cuffs and those were the only
parts she would iron. The brothers would get mad because they couldn't take
their jackets or sweaters off.

My aunt still irons all the sheets and bedding, and all clothing including
boxers, tee shirts - everything! ugh.

I think unless you had a very large concentration
of fustic in relation to the concentration of kermes you'd get orange
rather than yolk yellow.

over-dyeing fustic with even a weak concentration of kermes would give
yolk yellow. I agree that orange would be much more likely.

The problem is your comparisons of color are in the wrong time frame! At
any time in history, up to maybe 1950 or so, the majority of eggs eaten were
locally produced from chickens who ate a natural diet supplemented with corn
or other grains.

As anyone who has bought eggs fresh off the farm from free range chickens
can tell you -- the yolk is most definitely orange. The pale yellow of
today's mass-produced grocery store egg is a completely different color.

Re: [h-cost] Query on sewing machines

If you have a repair shop that is *not* a dealer - go there first. Ask what
models they recommend based on what they see in their shop. Then look
around at thrift stores, garage sales, etc.

I have a Morris (singer look-a-like) that sews straight stitch only (forward
and back), but it has a ton of extra feet for piping, ruffles, etc. It
doesn't zigzag, but it also never needs repair. It has extremely even
stitches and it's easy to use. It cost me $5 at a church rumage sale, and I
spent about $35 at the repair shop for cleaning/adjusting, and about $20 for
an old blonde drop down cabinet. It came with the instruction book and the
owner's notes (purchased new in 1955 for 89.00, IIRC) and the repair shop
said it was a great machine that will probably never need a thing. I have a
newer (1968) Viking that does some embroidery stitches, etc, but it's more
fussy, and parts are no longer made. I bought another one on ebay for parts.

Denise

Just thought I'd tell you what I did try with this lovely bit of wool
that was too pink... I had attempted overdying this piece of fabric
several years ago, with what I don't remember now with the only result
was the fulling of the fabric.

Therefore I started with a dye remover. I suspect that I didn't have
enough to do much for the yardage, but since I saw NO color seepage
into the water, I doubt it would have mattered if I'd had more.

I had the brown dye on hand and I'm not likely to use brown dye
anytime soon, so I went ahead and did the dye bath. It did not take,
at all.

In the end, I turned the fabric over to the friend who owns it and I
believe she is planning to have a lovely fucshia viking
caftan/overcoat of this wonderfully fulled wool. She will be warm,
dry and highly visible when wearing it.

The other thing that was big in my high school in the late 1960s was the
London Fog yellow poplin zip-front jacket. They were really
ubiquitous--looking out at a school assembly,. one saw a sea of light
yellow. And, rumor
had it that they were stolen from our gym locker room. (I never had one
of

these, either--pricey and not very practical for Missouri winters.) But
I'm curious if this fad was wide-spread during the late '60s at high
schools

in other parts of the country.

How funny! I never new that was a large trend. I didn't have a london fog
jacket, but I do remember a dearly loved pale yellow, zip front, hooded
jacket. I'm pretty sure it was OshKosh, and it was made from what I'd call
light weight canvas, or maybe denim, unlined. I LOVED that jacket and I was
so sad when I outgrew it. I'm pretty sure it was second hand and I have no
idea where it came from. I had that jacket in the mid 70s in Iowa.

Whoops--sorry for the blank post. Yes, Villager was a brand. A
shirtwaist, at least in 1960s terminology, is a dress with a fitted
bodice--bust and

waist darts--and buttons down the center front--attached to a skirt. It
could be full in the 1950s or early 1960s, but by the late '60s was often
A-line. The fabric was often a cotton with a floral sort of serpentine
print. To make the style work with a full skirt, there was a slit placket
opening at center front, or, sometimes, an underarm zipper. I never had
an
authentic Villager dress, but merely homemade styles (that I made
myself.) I
still have the pattern I used, Simplity 8296 from 1969. The A-line view
had

the underarm zipper. I think I used another pattern for the full-skirted
view, which had a slit placket but no underarm zipper.

Dresses could have short sleeves with a turned up cuff, or long sleeves
with a button cuff, and a convertible collar.

Would this be similar to the day dresses worn on shows like Leave it to
Beaver and I Love Lucy?
