There are several Jewish versions of the Gingerbread Man: Matzo Ball Boy by Lisa Shulman Runaway Dreidel by Leslea Newman The Runaway Latkes by Leslie Kimmelman There's also The Little Red Hen and the Passover Matzah by Leslie Kimmelman, obviously a take on the old fashioned Little Red Hen. I know this! I do a lot of programs with many versions of the same basic story. Here are some of them: Note that the first set includes a bibliography of retellings of Could Anything Be Worse?, my favorite version of the story because the pictures show the family preparing for Shabbat---which is a spiritual/psychological/perceptual change, but not a physical/actual/real one. Mind over Matter / Nothing Happens The outward situation of the characters is the same at the beginning as at the end, yet something has happened to make this a satisfying story. · Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina A peddler, unable to sell the caps he carries on his head, naps against a tree. When he wakes up, he discovers that monkeys in the tree have taken all but one of his caps. Yelling at them does no good; but when he throws his cap down, they imitate him and he retrieves his caps and returns to town. Nothing happens: his goal was to sell caps and he does not. Note that there are other stories and images about monkeys and peddlers: The Cloisters, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, has a beaker (the Monkey Cup). The Cleveland Museum of Art has the Peddler Goblet(link does not work). · Could Anything Be Worse? by Marilyn Hirsh When a man complains to his rabbi that his house is too noisy and crowded, the rabbi keeps telling him to invite in more animals and people until, at last, when the rabbi tells him to have them all leave the man thanks the rabbi for making his house so quiet and roomy. Re: [ha-Safran] Multicultural stories
Good morning, Eileen, There is also the story where parts of the body argue about which is most important . It appears as The Great Debate in Peninnah Schram's Jewish Stories One Generation Tells Another and in the picture book Milk of a Lionness by I.B. Singer, and then as an African tale (where a stomach also participates in the arguing), What is the most important part of the body?, in Julius Lester's How Many Spots Does a Leopard Have? There are also several versions of The Magic Pomegranate (Jewish, also in Peninnnah's book) which helps to heal the princess. Eric Kimmel has a picture book version from the Middle East called The Three Princes, where the healing fruit is an orange. And then, in working on my new guide to Latin American folklore, I came across another. There's a variant of Howard Schwartz's Cottage of Candles from Mexico, *La Madrina Muerte = Godmother Death,* Olga Loya, *Momentos Mágicos = Magic Moments*. Plus several versions of the youngest brother who brings back healing leaves to cure his father's blindness, but is killed by his jealous brothers. Let me know if that's one you'd like. I know a story, but unfortunately I don't remember the names. There is a story about a person who complained to his rabbi that his house was too small and the rabbi told him to bring in his chickens, his goat, his cow, his horse etc. When the man blew up that now his house was way way way too crowded the rabbi told him to take out the chickens, goat, cow, horse, etc and suddenly the house seemed much bigger! Dear Ellen (and Esteemed Colleagues): If you do not own a copy of Sharon Barcan Elswit's The Jewish Story Finder, run and get one. The 2012 edition includes 668 Tales that are listed by subject and source. In Elswit's 2009 edition, there is a list of several versions of The Dream and the Treasure, where a poor man dreams of a treasure. He goes to seek it out, and some kind of guard is there, who tells the man about HIS dream of a treasure buried in a poor man's house. Some Jewish versions: The Dream - Nina Jaffe - The Mysterious Visitor Reb Eisik's Treasure - Ellen Frankel - The Classic Tales The Treasure - Uri Shulevitz The Treasure - Howard Schwartz - Miriam's Tambourine A Secular version: Gimme Cracked Corn and I Will Share by Kevin O'Malley (Walker and Company, 2007) For the It Could Always Be Worse, I love using Too Much Noise by Ann McGovern. One more: Feathers used to illustrate the harms of gossip Forest, Heather. Feathers. Illustrated by Marcia Cutchin. Little Rock: August House Little Folk, 2005. ISBN: 0-87483-755-3. Rhyming text and colorful illustrations teach that hurtful words cannot be taken back easily once they are spoken. The author credits Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev with this tale. Rothenberg, Joan. Yettele's Feathers. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 1995. ISBN: 0-7868-2081-0. The town gossip learns her lesson when the rabbi tells her to cut open a pillow and bring him all the feathers. Yettele realized that words cannot be taken back. Waldman, Debby. A Sack Full of Feathers. Illustrated by Cindy Revell. Vancouver: Orca Book Publishers, 2006. ISBN: 978-1-55143-332-5. Yankel loves to go around his village of Olkinik telling stories, often about other people. One day the rabbi gives Yankel the job of putting a feather on every doorstep in the village. Yankel completes this task as he thinks of the stories he will tell his schoolmates. When he returns to the rabbi's house, he is instructed to collect all the feathers and bring them back. As hard as he tries, Yankel cannot do it. From this exercise, Yankel learns that you cannot take back a story once it is told - it goes where it goes, and you cannot say where or how or when.
