[ha-Safran] More about mainstream kidlit with Jewish characters

2016-06-12 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
When I asked for titles of kidlit/YA with Jewish characters in non-Jewish
books, I got quite a few answers, listed below. A few of those answers are "too
Jewish" to count IMHO, but mostly they were the kind of thing I was looking
for: characters who happen to be Jewish in a story which does not revolve
around Jewish themes or events. I'm especially interested in really recent
books (published in the last 5 years).

Let me know if you have any other suggestions to add to the list! Thanks, all!

[ha-Safran] Questions about Bibliotech

2016-06-09 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
As you all know, we will be discussing the book Bibliotech: why libraries
matter more than ever in the age of Google during the AJL conference in
Charleston (Monday at 2pm). Whether you will be there or not, we'd love to
include your questions in the discussion. Please email me your comments and
questions about the book. I hope to record this session for my Book of Life
Podcast, as I know there's a lot of interest in it from people who can't
attend.

Looking forward to hearing your questions.

[ha-Safran] Online book "Expect More"

2016-06-09 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Wow. You guys, I just read an entire online book (pdf format) called Expect
More: Demanding Better Libraries for Today's Complex World by David Lankes, and
I kind of wish we'd picked this title for our AJL Reads discussion instead of
BiblioTech. It has similar aims of creating a roadmap for the future of
libraries, but I found it much more inspiring, as well as better written, and
more specific in its suggestions. If you have a chance to read it, I strongly
encourage you to do so.

[ha-Safran] Mainstream Kidlit/YA books with Jewish protagonists

2016-06-11 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Kidlit/YA friends, please help me brainstorm titles of fiction with Jewish
protagonists, in which the story is not about Judaism. Half-Jewish counts. An
example would be Augie in Wonder by RJ Palacio.

[ha-Safran] library services for religious school

[ha-Safran] supportive library article

2016-07-05 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Here is a wonderfully upbeat article about the power of libraries and the love
people have for them. It's about public libraries in New York City, and even
though it doesn't exactly apply to my synagogue library, it's still very
uplifting, and probably worth sharing with your boss and your library's
stakeholders. Thanks for Pnina Moed Kass for sharing it with me. - Heidi

[ha-Safran] library services for religious school

2016-07-05 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Hi Safranim, a few weeks ago I posed a question about library services for
religious school classes, and I’ve compiled below the answers I received. I
thought you might be interested. – Heidi
--

For those of you working with religious school (not day school), what do you do
beyond storytime and discussion when classes come in to visit the library?
Especially looking for thoughts on engaging upper elementary and middle school
kids.

Thanks!
Heidi Rabinowitz
he...@cbiboca.org<mailto:he...@cbiboca.org>

I see preschool through 5th grade classes on Sunday mornings in addition to
monthly preschool storytimes. I do read stories but also sometimes do more
specific curriculum enhancing reading and discussions with students. I often
pull books related to a specific topic they are studying as I have access to
the curriculum and email scheduled teachers each week. Sometimes we have some
“show and tell” with historical books, Talmud, a book with great photos, other
synagogues, etc. I also do book talking for 4th and 5th graders and try to
“auction” off books. I’m trying to encourage students to add their book
reviews and ratings to the catalog; and a couple of teachers have reserved some
class time to follow up and do that with students. Some years, I have tried
Jewish Book Month read-a-thons or reading “contests” but my limited hours
prevent me from really promoting and doing a good job on that kind of
programming. We occasionally have a book author come and selected classes
(grades) get to go. We are gearing up for more programming this year but I’m
not yet sure how I will be able to manage adding that to my plate. Wish I
could see 6th and up, but there is no time in their crunched curriculum to add
library. I am often asking about the possibility of a book club elective.
Also, I would love to have an online book discussion with middle schoolers –
perhaps that is something to try during Jewish Book Month one year.

Toby

Toby Harris, Librarian

I have reading incentive programs for grades 1-6.
Sefer Safari for grades 1-3, which has been in effect here for at least 20
years, (i.e. began before my time..) programs for 4, 5, 6-- at least 2 of them
borrowed from Rachel Kamin.
5th graders do Reading Tic Tac Toe (different genres in each square of the tic
tac toe board. Prizes are coupons to Graeter's Ice Cream); Sydney Taylor Club
for 6th graders (also from Rachel, I think), and my own "Eitz Fun to Read for
Israel" for 4th grade, whose curriculum is Israel -- books read get leaves on
class tree (eitz), plus monthly drawing for Target gift card, plus Sisterhood
gives $5.00 per leaf; students who have leaves on the tree meet w/ me at year
end and choose a tzedakah case in Israel to send the money. storytime and/or
book talks accompany all our reading incentive programs. With tie-ins to
curriculum, our school's "value of the month" or whatever else will work.
Without programming, there'd be almost no circulation these days.

Andrea Rapp

Book talks, play reading, reader’s theater, monologue given by librarian,
singing, poetry-all ideas.

Ellen Share, Librarian, Washington Hebrew Congregation

We don't do a whole lot, though someone reads stories to the little guys. But
once a month I meet with the 4th-7th grades separately. My goal in those short
sessions is to introduce the kids to general Jewish literature, so we read
aloud and discuss stories and/or poems by noted authors such as I.L. Peretz and
I.B. Singer, with some info on their lives, the Yiddish language, their themes
and how they relate to Jewish values, etc. I also introduce the kids to stock
characters, such as the fools of Chelm and the righteous man in the guise of a
beggar, and I like to do something on humor. (Whatever engages those rascals!)
Occasionally I'll talk about a contemporary middle grade or Y.A. book to bring
up discussion topics. Oh, and one other thing I do at the beginning of each
school year for the 4th and 5th graders is a "treasure hunt" through the
library. I give them a list of things to find, and they work in pairs to fill
out their list. It's a pretty lively activity! Though I'm a professional
librarian (retired now to write full time), like the rest of our "staff," I'm a
volunteer so I don't get to meet with the kids as often as I'd like to. Still,
we do what we can, eh? Good luck!

Lois Ruby
Congregation Albert - Albuquerque, NM

Please share your treasure hunt with the list. I'm sure I'm not the only one
who would be inspired by what you're doing.

Emily Bergman
Temple Sinai
Glendale, CA

Thanks for asking, Emily. Here's a list I used with 4th grade partners who had
20 minutes to find the treasures, with a couple of "gimme" questions to keep
them interested and to make it fun (while it's also constructive):

 TREASURE HUNT

1. Title of a cookbook for Passover

2. Call numb

[ha-Safran] Shall We Continue AJL READS?

2016-08-19 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Hi AJL-ers.

Last year AJL had a virtual book club called AJL READS. Every few months we had
a conference call to discuss a Jewish novel or memoir. These calls attracted
just a handful of people each time, but they enjoyed it. In June at the AJL
Conference in Charleston we had a live discussion of a librarianship nonfiction
title. We got a good crowd and had a lively discussion.

The goal of AJL READS was to find a way for AJL members to connect and network
outside of conference time.

So my question for you is: would you like to continue the virtual book club?
Would you prefer librarianship books over fiction? Would you prefer a
discussion via Hasafran/Facebook that you can participate in on your own
schedule or a conference call scheduled at a specific time?

Please let me know your thoughts. If there is continuing interest, I will start
planning for a new year of AJL READS!

Thanks,

Heidi

[ha-Safran] Help Wanted: Publications

2016-08-30 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
The AJL Council is seeking to fill the position of Publications Chair. The
Publications Chair oversees sales of existing AJL Publications and looks for
opportunities to create new publications. The Chair also works with related
committees as needed, such as Bibliography Bank, Conference Proceedings, News &
Reviews, and Judaica Librarianship.

The Publications Chair is a Council position with voting rights. The Chair
attends the Council meeting at the annual conference in June and the midwinter
meeting in January (this year being held in New York).

This is a great opportunity to get involved in AJL leadership, influence the
organization, and bolster the profession through timely publications. Past
Chair Joyce Levine will be happy to mentor the incoming Chair.

To learn more, please contact Member Relations Chair Heidi Rabinowitz at
he...@cbiboca.org<mailto:he...@cbiboca.org> or 561-241-8118 ext. 206.

[ha-Safran] AJL Reads Selection

2016-09-13 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Thanks to those who sent in suggestions for the AJL Reads virtual book
discussion. From among all those excellent suggestions, we have chosen Reading
Claudius: A Memoir in Two Parts by Caroline Heller because it's about the power
of literature.

We will hold the book discussion at the beginning of November. You can find a
copy new or used here:
https://www.amazon.com/Reading-Claudius-Memoir-Two-Parts/dp/0385337612/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1473713907=8-1=reading+claudius
You can also buy an e-book from the publisher here:
http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/78135/reading-claudius-by-caroline-heller/

We're going to experiment with a different format for this discussion. Instead
of a conference call, we will use Facebook to discuss the book over a period of
several days. Author Caroline Heller will join our discussion to answer
questions on Facebook. If you have a Facebook account, you can join the
Facebook Group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ajlreads. If you are not a
member of Facebook, you will be able to read the discussion but not participate.

I believe we will hold the discussion during Tuesday and Wednesday November 1-2
(just confirming with Caroline Heller now). This should make it convenient for
people to participate from different time zones. We will post discussion
questions throughout those days, and I hope you will respond with comments and
opinions, and your questions for the author.

Let me know if you have any questions!

[ha-Safran] Response to "Why Are Jewish Children's Books So Bad?"

2016-11-17 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
The essay in Mosaic decrying the state of Jewish kidlit was ill-informed in my
opinion, and I've written a comprehensive response on my blog, The Book of
Life, at
https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2016/11/response-to-jewish-kidlit-article-in.html.
I hope you will read it and comment on it, and I hope even more that you'll
follow my link to Mosaic and leave comments there.

[ha-Safran] AJL READS - how it went

2016-11-03 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
I am pleased to report that AJL READS took place on Tuesday and Wednesday
November 1-2 via Facebook Group. We discussed Reading Claudius and we were
joined by author Caroline Heller. The group includes 42 members. The author was
joined by twelve participants who posted comments and questions, and the stats
show that many more members read the posts without speaking up themselves. I
was impressed by the thoughtful nature of the questions and answers, and I
enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere created by doing the event over a few days.

I'd like to get feedback from those who participated and those who did not. If
you took part or followed along without commenting, what did you think of
Facebook as a venue? How was the time frame? Did you like having the author
participate or did it hold you back from saying anything critical? How was the
quality of the discussion? Did you prefer it to a conference call? Would you
suggest we use this format again?

I'm also interested to know if using Facebook as the venue prevented people
from participating. If you did not participate but would have liked to, please
let me know what stopped you from joining Facebook for this purpose, and let me
know any suggestions you may have for other discussion formats.

Thanks, everyone!

Subject: [ha-Safran] searching for an article

Sometime over the last month or two I saw an article online about the poor
quality of Jewish children's books. The piece opened with the low-hanging
fruit, blasting SHMELF THE HANUKKAH ELF. A google search indicates criticisms
from a variety of publishers and reviewers on that title, but the article was
about a broader trend.
I'd like to re-read it and discuss the piece with some friends but I'm unable
to find it.
Can anyone direct me to its source?
Many thanks,

[ha-Safran] Simon and Schuster's horrible decision

2016-12-31 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Dear Safranim,
Perhaps you've heard in the news that Simon and Schuster has offered Milo
Yiannopoulos a book deal through their conservative imprint, Threshold. He is
an anti-Semitic, misogynist, bigoted, neo-Nazi "troll" whose goal in life is to
harass people. He was the one who abused black Ghostbusters actress Leslie
Jones so badly that Twitter actually banned him.

While he has a right to free speech, that does not include book deals. In my
opinion, this book deal legitimizes his message of hate and gives him a wider
platform for it. I feel that S should be aware that some of its customers are
disgusted by their poor decision, so I emailed them. If you agree, I encourage
you to email, write, or call to tell them so.

Here's what I sent to Jennifer Robinson, Dir of Publicity at S,
gallerypublic...@simonandschuster.com<mailto:gallerypublic...@simonandschuster.com>

Dear Ms. Robinson,

As a librarian for 20 years and an advocate of free speech, I must nevertheless
protest your rewarding Milo Yiannopoulos's hateful, bigoted, abusive behavior
with a book deal. The public needs to hear less from this horrible man, not
more. I am ashamed of S for helping him to spread his messages of hate. I
certainly will not be purchasing this book, and I'm sure many of my colleagues
feel the same way. I urge you to cancel this book deal. In America's current
atmosphere of divisiveness and emboldened hate speech, it is time to cultivate
an atmosphere of tolerance and kindness rather than fan the flames by
amplifying the voices of the so-called alt right.

I hope you will seriously consider the consequences to our society of giving
hate speech a legitimate platform.
Thank you for your attention,

Heidi Rabinowitz

[ha-Safran] Librarians VS Fake News: Conference Discussion

2017-04-20 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Hi AJL!

Remember last year at the AJL Conference in Charleston, we had an AJL READS
discussion of the book Bibliotech? This year I'm making it easier for you:
instead of reading a whole book, we will just read an article, "Can Librarians
Save Us From Fake News?"

During the AJL Confernce in NYC, on Monday June 19 during dinner, I will
facilitate a discussion on this article. The article also contains a link to a
librarian panel discussion on fake news, which I encourage you to watch. Here's
a link to the article, published at Vice.com in March:
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/can-librarians-save-us-from-fake-news
and here is a link to the panel discussion, held at Gail Borden Public Library
in Elgin, IL this January:
http://gailborden.info/fakenews

I look forward to discussing this timely issue with you!

[ha-Safran] Heidi joining PJ Library

2017-08-07 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Hi Safranim,

After almost 20 terrific years as librarian at Congregation B'nai Israel of
Boca Raton, I am off on a new adventure. I'll be joining the PJ Library team at
their head office in Agawam, MA. I start at the beginning of October, and I'll
be working on book selection and growing content. I hope to stay closely
involved with AJL and I expect to see you all in Boston next year!

If you are interested in a truly amazing synagogue children's librarian
position in Boca, let me know! A job description will be posted soon. FYI, when
I first took on the synagogue job I had a public librarian background and no
formal Judaica experience and it worked out fine. So if you have public youth
services friends seeking employment, this may be a good opportunity for them.

[ha-Safran] Jewish children's art book?

2017-08-16 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Hi everyone,

Someone just walked into the library to make an in-memory donation for someone
who was an artist, and asked that we use the money to buy an art-related Jewish
children's book. I'm thinking this could mean Jewish art history, a biography
of a Jewish artist, or even a how-to book. Any title suggestions?

Thanks! Heidi Rabinowitz

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The synagogue where I am employed has decided to severely cut the librarian
position down to 8 hours a month. Needless to say, I will be leaving by June
15 (maybe June 8). I was informed that they will be planning for a library
commons or educational commons, but as is the case for many a synagogue, it may
not include a librarian - or at least, not me. Like a Hillel sandwich, I've
been feeling the sting of maror but also the sweetness of charoset. The
collection here is full of incredible treasures and I have been privileged to
tend it and share it for 12 years. Its historical legacy has touched many! It
will evolve without me and I will evolve without it. I'm already embracing the
next chapter!

Though I had planned to attend the conference, I have changed my plans and will
not be there this year, sadly. I know that it will be fabulous and I will miss
seeing you all! I hope to show up next year, if only for a day or a meal! It
has been a great ride and I will likely stay involved with AJL for another
year. My home email is toby...@gmail.com<mailto:toby...@gmail.com> in case you
would like to stay in touch.

During the AJL Conference in NYC, on Monday June 19 during dinner, I will
facilitate a discussion about "Librarians Vs. Fake News," based on an article
that appeared in Vice. This will be our AJL READS discussion, and using an
article instead of a book should make it easy for you to participate!

Here is the article:

I look forward to discussing this timely issue with you!

[ha-Safran] Clarification re: fake news discussion

2017-06-04 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
Hi AJL,

As you know, I will be facilitating a discussion on Monday June 19 during
dinner at the AJL conference about "librarians vs fake news." I want to be
clear that this is not going to be a political discussion. The issue of fake
news affects everyone, no matter their political views. We will be approaching
the topic as librarians, as information providers. Please keep that in mind
when you join the discussion.

See you in New York!

[ha-Safran] Cam Jansen books

2017-11-10 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
I know of the early chapter book Cam Jansen mystery series by David Adler
but I've never read any of them. Does anyone know if Cam is identifiably
Jewish? Or is she sort of a "stealth Jew"?

At an event called Jew in the City, Adler said this:

"Esteemed author David Adler commented that the famed Cam Jansen always ate
cream cheese sandwiches and solved mysteries by Thursdays, because eating
kosher and observing the Sabbath was a priority even for his fictitious
storybook character. “I have always tried to infuse my books with as many
Jewish values as I can,” Adler said. Adler dedicated this award to his late
father who had been so proud of him and his success as an author."

Thanks

[ha-Safran] Announcing #Readukkah 2017

2017-12-06 Thread Heidi Rabinowitz
#Readukkah 2017 is the 3rd annual Jewish reading challenge, being
co-sponsored by AJL and the Jewish Book Council, during Hanukkah December
12-19, 2017.

To participate, RSVP to the Facebook online event at
https://www.facebook.com/events/1481728818549386/, then post about any
#JewLit book (any book of Jewish interest) on the event discussion board—or
share a link to your review anywhere online—and use the hashtag #Readukkah
to connect with other readers!

By sharing your Readukkah posts, your participation in this reading
challenge helps spread the word about worthwhile titles, bringing them to
the attention of more readers and supporting the publication of Jewish
books! The books don't have to be Hanukkah-related - choose any
Jewish-interest book, for kids or adults!

Happy Hanukkah and Happy Reading!
