I am running the AGP, a buddy of mine just upgraded and went over to the PCI
express. Noted the ideo card was running extreemly hotter than his previous
AGP. I would double check on the thermal conditions if making the change.

Currently looking at changing my water cooled system over to a sub freezing

I've built a few desktop machines on the nforce3-based MSI K8N Neo 2
Platinum motherboard lately, very nice board. Great reviews, and
personal experience would agree, great performer. I believe the
nforce4-based Neo 4 Platinum and Neo 4 Platinum SLI are both good
board if you want PCI-Express instead of AGP, too. I've yet to upgrade
my own AthlonXP 3200+ system yet, but it'll be one of those bunch when
I get around to it. Haven't decided yet whether I want to keep my AGP
video card or upgrade to PCI-Express while I'm at it and get a new
card too...

the bus isn't going to affect the thermal characteristics of the card

if you already have a socket939 system it's a little easier choice,
since all you have to do is drop one in. But yeah, if you are
upgrading to a socket939 system it probably makes more sense in the
long run to get a PCI-E board at the same time.

[hlds] VAC2 Beta information

2005-07-06 Thread WayneH
Alfred,
We are currently experiencing issues getting vacbeta to start, it says
in console 'unable to authenticate with vac servers', 'secure mode disabled'.
We currently run 22 CS:S servers @
http://www.gamearena.com.au/games/title/pc_cssource/servers.php, #03 and #17
will not start with vacbeta, even though we run much the same command line as
the other 18 servers, in which vacbeta will start.
Any ideas as to why?
We have had this issue for some time, with various IP's/ports configurations
allowing VAC to start.
Our port numbers are all within the VALVe recommended range.

Interesting, I've been having that problem, have about 12 css servers,
4 won't enable vacbeta, all the others will (spread over a couple of
machines, no direct link as to which won't that I can see).

I tried -steamport (-1 than gameport, and some others). This actually
worked for one that never has before so thought it was looking good
(1st one I tried). Other ones still won't enable though, with the same
unable to connect/authenticate with steam.

I get the feeling somethings clashing somewhere, but no idea what.
Main reason for thinking that is a totally fresh install on same box
will work, but obviously don't want to do that for every server
whenever this crops up (i.e something has caused it in the first place
which is likely to happen again at some point).

Be sure to shutdown all servers first, then start them up again with the

Also ensure no other programs are using the ports around the css gameport.

I am running a CSS 16 player 6 bots, bots are kicked as players enter,
server on win2k sp4 P4 2.4 512 ram.
I have noticed since the last update, that my server starts out using
around 60megs ram 60megs VM.
AS time goes by, it steadily uses more, I always check when there are
just 6 in the server, on a stock map.
After a day its around 150megs ram 150megs VM, it is now 284megs ram
318megs VM, uptime 1:40:52:32
on map cs_compound. I run maxfps 200, tickrate 33 , the only other thing
open is mediaplayer paused in a video.

here is the start up bat file:

start /AboveNormal D:\CS_S_Server\srcds.exe -game cstrike +map de_dust
-port 27015 -ip 192.168.1.102 -vacbeta

I was running -BudgetPanel and stopped thinking that mite be the
problem, but it wasn't.
Does anyone else see this on their servers?

Any constructive ideas welcome,

Ned

[hlds] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2005-07-06 Thread Alfred Reynolds
We have released an update to Counter-Strike: Source. Run the
hldsupdatetool to get this update.

The update adds a new map, cs_assault, to the lineup and also provides a
new Terrorist skin. More details can be found here:
http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=newsid=426

This update also makes all Source servers secure by default. To run an
unprotected server put -insecure on the command line.

You may also be interested in a new command line option, -flushlog
which causes log files to be flushed to disk once per second (rather
than after every 4kbytes of log data).

Interesting as the 1 that appears in the VDF file is clearly wrong anyway.

On 7/5/05, Kevin Ottalini [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I did a detailed test, results are here:
 http://home.covad.net/~k25125/SteamyThings/rate_test.jpg

I did this test on an HLDM (HL1) server (same for CS 1.6) and client, HL2
servers and clients might have different (lower) maxrates.

the information (for HL1) is described here:
 http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=166

sv_maxrate is valid from 0 (which means no set maxrate IE: whatever the
client is set for up to 2)

if you do a find sv_maxrate on a SRCDS server it will return:
(def . 0) - Max bandwidth rate allowed on server, 0 == unlimited

where unlimited means any client rate from sv_minrate to 1 maximum
 (maybe 2?).

 sv_minrate and sv_maxrate are both in bytes/second.

there is also a detailed description of the multiplayer networking here:
 http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_Multiplayer_Networking

for HL2 Servers, I did find these comments in the
 C:\HL2Server\platform\admin\helpfile.vdf

 sv_maxrate
 {
text sv_maxrate:set the max data transfer rate in bytes per second for
any one client on the server.
Setting this to 0 or any value over 1 defaults to 1. Default:0
 {

 sv_minrate
 {
text sv_minrate: set the min data transfer rate in bytes per second for
any one client on the server.
Setting this to 0 or any value under 500 defaults to 500. Default:0
 }

I suggest you do your own test as I did if you still have doubts.

RE: [hlds] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2005-07-06 Thread James Grimstead
Dont forget to add the Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) tickbox in the dedicated
server GUI.

By the way, I think VAC1 shouldnt just fade out of existance. I mean it has
done a good job. I think it should go out in style. Give it a nice update
a week or so before HL1 is updated to disable it to make way for VAC2. It
shouldnt just be chucked aside as if it never existed.
You watch all the cheatsite forums start screaming VAC2 IS RELEASED OMG IM
BANNED yet its just VAC1 going out with a bang. Then they start making
updated cheats and say its VAC2 PROOF then VAC2 comes along and nabs em.

Also, will there still be bugfixes and additions to HL1 + official mods, or
is support like this over?

Just received the e-mail regarding updating problems and I have a question
about this too.
How does steam and/or the update tool select what content server to use?
I ask this because alot of times I will restart steam and I will be on a
content server which is almost max'd out and I get a poor download speed,
yet there are so many unfiltered content servers which I could be using but
willnot goto.

It will cause a higher performance hit (due to it flushing to disk more
often, the OS could cause the program to stall) but programs that
monitor the logs (like stats packages) can get more timely updates. In
general you should not use it unless you have a specific use for it.

[hlds] Setting sv_lan 0 while in offline mode causes crash.

2005-07-06 Thread James Grimstead
I know people will think, why set sv_lan to 0 in offline mode? But I thought
I might aswell post the error I got:

Now, when setting sv_lan 0 on a listen server, vac2 beta will be loaded
automatically and the sv_secure cvar set to 1.
While in offline mode, setting sv_lan causes CSS to crash with this error:

'The instruction at 0x24191035 referenced memory at 0x00b39530. The
memory could not be read.'

Get kicked to desktop.

Just a query... Im guessing the sv_secure command is only a means for
server browsers to detect the presence of VAC?

And will this command be added to HL1?

Correct. There is a mapcycle.txt.steam_bak in your cstrike/ directory
that contains your old mapcycle.

I realized (too late) that I should have made the mapcycle.txt file
read only, but I'm just curious as to why it had to be overwritten?
Was it just to ensure that cs_assault got added into rotations?

You may get this if you have a custom cs_assault in your CS: Source

RE: [hlds] Counter-Strike: Source update released

2005-07-06 Thread stalker333

James,

As for VAC1 just fading away, well thats kinda the point. It hasnt done a 'great' job at all, its
done an ok job at best IMO. In case you are not aware, or have not noticed in-game,
there are plenty of working cheats available online. Also, thats just the nature of
software, it goes out of date pretty fast in many cases. Given the nature of cheating and since it
is an on-going battle, this is certainly one of those cases. Sadly, anti-cheats will seemingly
always be 2 steps behind the cheats.

Updates to VAC1? Well I would bet that wont happen, too much wasted time and
effort. I would think they've done just about all the updating they are going
to do, with VAC2 supposedly so close to release. Also, they may have already
done this, as was pointed out there were many people saying that VAC2 banned
them on the steam forums. That could have been a new cheat detection...

I'm sure HL1 and mods will still get attention, if not by valve by someone.
However, you can bet as HL2 mods come out, new games, etc that will start to
fade away fast. HL1 has had a damn good run, have to give credit there.
However, soon the only reason to keep playing HL1/mods will either be A)
Nostalgia, B) Crappy Computer, or C) Don't want to shell out the cash for
another game.

Either way, that group is going to get so small after a while, nobody cares
about updates for it. Ask anyone who plays a small MOD, getting updates is
usually like pulling teeth. Basically put yourself in the shoes of the
programmer who will be doing those updates. Should I spend time on something a
handful of people play (relatively) or something that hundreds of thousands of
people will play/use. Hmmm :)

As to the content server question, no bloody idea. Good question though, I have
had similar problems to those stated here, but at times when the content
servers should have been near empty. (i.e. not after a release of any kind,
just setting up a server)

-The Joint Chief
AKA Stoned Smurf

--
Dont forget to add the Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) tickbox in the dedicated
server GUI.

By the way, I think VAC1 shouldnt just fade out of existance. I mean it has
done a good job. I think it should go out in style. Give it a nice update a
week or so before HL1 is updated to disable it to make way for VAC2. It
shouldnt just be chucked aside as if it never existed.
You watch all the cheatsite forums start screaming VAC2 IS RELEASED OMG IM BANNED yet
its just VAC1 going out with a bang. Then they start making updated cheats and say its VAC2
PROOF then VAC2 comes along and nabs em.

Also, will there still be bugfixes and additions to HL1 + official mods, or is
support like this over?

Just received the e-mail regarding updating problems and I have a question
about this too. How does steam and/or the update tool select what content
server to use? I ask this because alot of times I will restart steam and I will
be on a content server which is almost max'd out and I get a poor download
speed, yet there are so many unfiltered content servers which I could be using
but will not goto.

If we leave -vacbeta in the target, will we see any negative effects?

We have released an update to Counter-Strike: Source. Run the
 hldsupdatetool to get this update.

The update adds a new map, cs_assault, to the lineup and also
provides a new Terrorist skin. More details can be found here:
 http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=newsid=426

This update also makes all Source servers secure by default. To run
an unprotected server put -insecure on the command line.

You may also be interested in a new command line option, -flushlog
which causes log files to be flushed to disk once per second (rather
than after every 4kbytes of log data).

okay I forced the issue but noticed that the SRCDS icon was not part of the

Second issue; I did copy off the original server and no issues with Steam
autincating and disoplaying my server. However under the HLDS server I was
no longer on the Steam listing and attempts to locate via the Favorites,
resulted in not being able to find my server... best guess

[hlds] Questions about sv_maxrate for DOD Server

2005-07-06 Thread leo bounds
I have some larger DOD servers that are having some
performance issues.
What is the best sv_maxrate for a 24 player server ?
For source servers I usually set sv_maxrate to 2
or so but I don't think DOD handles that much.

For Day of Defeat 24 player server should it be set to
9000 or a higher number for sv_maxrate ?

Thanks for any info

btw: my source server finally did starting updating
with tonights update after about 40 mins.

[hlds] NeMod broken with update and causes server crash

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Just wanted to report .. NeMod Admin mod seems to be broken after this
update with the following error message ... and it actually causes the
server to crash and not get to the 'map load' point:

[NemoD] WARNING: Couldn't find address for g_pGameRules!

It even causes a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error (abnormal
program termination) under Windows.

I got my server to load fine once I simply renamed the
'serverplugin_nemod.vdf' file to 'serverplugin_nemod.vd' (REMOVED THE 'F'
from the end to disable).

I'm guessing this is some address that was removed in this update ... and
that the plugin creator may need to update something .. but I thought I'd
mention it here so I could get technical info to pass along to the author.
I use his plugin mainly to allow players to /respawn themselves on maps like
'surf' and etc.

Thanks,

Kevin Russell

1 is definitely incorrect.
Any Bandwith Monitoring Program will tell you that you can do in excess of
15KB/s when playing CS:S, so long as the client and server are set up
appropriately.

sv_maxrate is valid from 0 (which means no set maxrate IE: whatever the

if you do a find sv_maxrate on a SRCDS server it will return:

  sv_maxrate
  {
