Oracle on z/OS [was: Convert DB2 on z/OS to UDB on z/Linux]

Re: Oracle on z/OS [was: Convert DB2 on z/OS to UDB on z/Linux]
Hi Bill, Thanks for the info. I understand that OAM will continue to be supported, but not enhanced. If a new feature of the Oracle database requires an update to the OAM, it means applications running on z/OS would not be able to use the new Oracle feature. Is that correct? If so, it's hard to imagine that any company using z/OS would consider using Oracle as the database. Oracle obviously knows this, so in essence it seems they've given up on the z/OS platform. Would you agree with this? Out of curiosity, can you shed any light on why this decision was made; e.g. economical, political, technical, etc? Re: Oracle on z/OS [was: Convert DB2 on z/OS to UDB on z/Linux]
I may be misremembering, but when we talked to Oracle about what would and would not be supported I seem to recall that there was no guaruntee that Oracle would support even connecting the z/OS Oracle 10.2 client to more than one version up. In other words, connecting to a version 11 server is supported, but connecting to a version 12 server (whenever that is released) may or may not be supported. Does this sound correct? If so, this means that any Oracle server supporting z/OS clients could not be upgraded beyond version 11. Not a desirable situation, I think. Personally I think a good compromise would be for Oracle to stabilize only the server code, but to keep up with client code (including the batch and online Access Manager components). Unfortunately Oracle appears to have ruled that out... Any help for Oracle on z/OS 1.8?
I'm installing z/OS 1.8 on my sandbox. Our Oracle DBA person is testing it. I know nothing about Oracle. He says it worked fine on z/OS 1.6. He is getting the following: quote * TOP OF DATA ** SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.2.0 - Production on Wed Sep 5 09:50:03 2007 Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All Rights Reserved. SQL SQL Connected to an idle instance. SQL ORA-03135: connection lost contact SQL Disconnected BOTTOM OF DATA The description for the error is as follows, ORA-03135: connection lost contact Either your server connection was terminated unexpectedly or your server timed out the connection. Check if the SQLNET.INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT in sqlnet.ora is not set too low. If this is not a problem, check if you have firewall issues. Some routers are set up to clean up idle TCP connections. We are not using SQLNET.ORA file in our configuration. Infact I am issuing the mount command via JCL which should not use the oracle net services, it should be using the Z/OS XM service (Z/OS cross memory). I have no clue about XM services, Could please take a look at the XM services and see if there is a timeout for connections? Appreciate your help. /quote As best as I can see, there are no error messages in the MVS SYSLOG. I have no idea where to look or what to do to address this. Is anybody else out there running Oracle on z/OS 1.8 (or on z/OS any release)? I'm going to ask that he contact Oracle. I cannot as I don't have any access. -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology The information contained in this e-mail message may be privileged and/or confidential. Re: Any help for Oracle on z/OS 1.8?
Don't you just hate people who answer their own questions? The problem was actually an S0C4-10 in an LE program: EDCEXTVR in module CEEEV003 in CEE.SCEELPA. Then, something clicked that was mentioned here about C programs and XPLINK(ON) now being the default in z/OS 1.8. I put an XPLINK(OFF) in the PARM= on the program and am getting different Oracle errors. Anybody seen anything like: quote SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.2.0 - Production on Wed Sep 5 12:32:03 2007 Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All Rights Reserved. Absolutely not! I hate people who answer their own questions and do not tell us what they found out. At least your findings will keep several of us looking for that default change when silly problems show up. Thanks!
