Re: What happens with no working SE?

2016-04-19 Thread Rob Schramm
Ok.. So how many people leave their "l am down to one SE z machine" powered
down for lengthy periods of time that is not a DR machine? Or is running
production on a single SE machine for a long time using STP?

I am hoping that my questions are somewhat rhetorical or humorous and
completely lacking in the "Homer Simpson duooh!!" head slap.

It would be like running an older multi-CEC sysplex with a single ETR
expecting no single point of failure.

Yeah, that's an option, but it's a lot more work and has other possible
impacts. Given the relatively low uptake of Java on z, we'd rather isolate
the changes to Java-land.

Andrew Rowley suggested:

>NewDirectByteBuffer looks like it would allow you to allocate buffers from
the JNI side (and therefore control the location in storage) and use them
from Java. I don't know what the performance implications are.

Not sure this helps, as the Java side has no relationship with the JNI other
than calling it atomically. This seems more like it's for use in a
cooperative/persistent environment, where the Java side is going to know
more about the JNI side.

But I'm no Java programmer (I don't even drink coffee), so maybe? Thanks.

Re: Java on z bitness

2016-04-19 Thread Andrew Rowley

I haven't done it yet, but I have been researching similar issues.

NewDirectByteBuffer looks like it would allow you to allocate buffers
from the JNI side (and therefore control the location in storage) and
use them from Java. I don't know what the performance implications are.

I would be very interested to hear what you find out.

Andrew Rowley

We have a JNI for our product. It lets a 31-bit Java application call into
our started task, which uses cross-memory services to fetch data from the
caller's address space. Our STC is 31-bit.

Now a customer wants to use it in 64-bit Java. I'd'a thunk [PUN INTENDED]
that this would Just Work, but no. And I'm told that this is a peculiarity
of z, since other platforms don't have Program Call and Started Tasks and
XMS.

It seems to me that there are two main possible solutions:

1) A full 64-bit version of the JNI.

2) A 64-bit "shim" that just copies the buffers to 31-bit storage and
then calls the 31-bit JNI. This obviously adds some overhead, but reduces
maintenance etc.

For either of these, the question then is, can the 64-bit part create
below-the-line copies of the data (it does know where they are, at least!)?
Obviously if so, we'd like to know how!

Anyone ever done anything like this? If not, can you suggest someone who
might have done enough Java on z to understand what we're trying to do?

Thanks,

So the Java application calls your JNI, which in turn issues a space switching
PC
to call your started task?

Why not make your STC run AMODE 64, at least part of the time? It is easy
to switch modes, but you do have to be careful that those programs that run
AMODE 64 save and restore the 64-bit registers. The same with your JNI. It
doesn't have to be "Full 64-bit".

Hello, all usually we open PBM's and Service requests online using SR or
IBMLINK, however sometime we have to call IBMSERV because we hac as DS8800 or
TS7700 issue. It sure is a lot easier using the online. Is there by chance a
website we can go to a an IBMSERV request?

Thanks in advance.

Java on z bitness

2016-04-19 Thread Phil Smith III
(Cross-posted to IBM-MAIN and MVS-OE.)

Thanks,

.phsiii

I've been doing the same but from my .profile. Working in Switzerland, my
emulator is has long been setup to run with CP IBM-500, which has some
essential characters mapped to different code points. So I learnt some 20 years
ago that using square bracket [] and curly braces {} in shell scripts is not a
good idea. Therefore, I'm always using the test command instead of [] in shell
scripts.

So this:
UID=`id -u `
if [ "$UID" = "0" ]
then...

becomes this:

if test $(id -u) = 0
then...

And there are other characters like the pipe symbol which can cause troubles.

In Setup->View Settings... enter C/370 in the search field. Set the "C/370

Which emulator? Others in IBM-MAIN might know how to change the character
set in it. I use "Host Explorer" for "Open Text", was Hummingbird.

If you want, you could edit the file and do:

c x'bb' x'bd' all

to make the code points be correct.

Your answer was what I was expecting. I think John is on the right track that
this must be some code page issue. What emulator are you using and how

Ok. Thanks. Seemed we are all reading between the lines. ;-D

I think many people are seeing 'shell' as the environment which you enter the
OMVS on z/OS and then use the binaries and data. This is based on IBM knowledge
centre, book 'z/OS Basic Skills' - 'The OMVS command is used to invoke the z/OS
UNIX shell'.

True, perhaps Lionel can chime in on what he is using and most importantly,
whether he has customized that and the code pages or not.

Your answer was what I was expecting. I think John is on the right track that
this must be some code page issue. What emulator are you using and how
is it set? If you are using Vista TN3270 (like many of us do) set the option
to "US-C Programming".

tcsh (the C shell)

Yes, I keep forgetting that point. I use ssh from a Linux/Intel desktop. I
also use telnet. But most people seem to use TSO OMVS or, at least, use
ISPF option 2 to edit UNIX files.

I have set my ISPF terminal type up as a 3278A to have ISPF use IBM-1047.
The 3278L1 terminal type is probably what I should use.

That _looks_ correct. But I'm wondering if you're using CP-037 encoding
rather than IBM-1047 encoding for the [ and ] symbols. [ needs to be 0xAD
and ] needs to be 0xBD

. What do you get with the command:

echo '[]' | od -tcx1

  AD BD 15

I put those lines in the /etc/profile on z/OS 2.2. I did a simple cut'n'paste
from your message. I did not get any error messages. I was not logging in as

are run. Be sure to put the command "set +x" at the end to turn off the
echoing.

Re: What happens with no working SE?

2016-04-19 Thread linda golding
Am curious . This is what i could find looking at the enhancements . Since
you say STP doesn't steer the clock , i would like to know how this works
these days .

*

*Service Element (SE) Time Accuracy*
As a continuation of the zEnterprise 196 (z196) timing accuracy
improvements for an STP-only CTN, namely, SE/CPC hourly clock steer and
synch, the zEnterprise EC12 and zEnterprise BC12 have expanded these
enhancements by allowing the SE to access an STP panel-configured External
Time Source (ETS), even when the CPC is powered off or has not been IMLed.
The SE achieves this by invoking the ETS-configured NTP servers to obtain
the ETS-SE time difference and steers the SE clock towards the ETS clock.
During IML, the more accurate SE clock time transfers to the CPC clock,
maximizing the CPC timing accuracy.

This feature is available exclusively on zEnterprise EC12 and zEnterprise
BC12.

Thanks ,

Linda

RFE's and voting for them

2016-04-19 Thread Robert Prins
Whenever I come up with something that seems, at least to me, useful, be it PL/I
or ISPF (and very soon SDSF), I create an RFE, and post it, here, on the PL-1
list, and also on http://ibmmainframes.com/index.php and that means many of my
suggestions have received double figure votes.

However, when I added my "SuperC WORKSIZE option as ISPF configuration option
(87048)"

yesterday, I also had a look at everything else that might be of interest, and
lo-and-behold, there were two by Lionel B. Dyck that are definitely very useful,
yet had received only one and four votes.

Is he too modest to bring them to our attention? Don't people look at the RFE
site on a regular basis? I don't know, but I would suggest that those of you who
add RFE's give them some publicity, and that we occasionally look at what's
there, and vote for, or at least comment on what's already there.

my dream, but I could live with it.

I thought STP code runs on the support element . Access to the NTP server
from the CTS is initiated and controlled by the Support Element.

In that case , a sysplex would die when support element is not available .

NTP is not STP.
STP is managed from HMC/SE but it doesn't mean the SE is steering the clock.
NTP can be used for "wall clock" time adjustment, but STP will work
without NTP at all or with NTP failure.
Last, but not least: multi-CPC STP configuration will survive any of the
CPC failure. Not only SE, but whole CPC.
