Subject: Network issue - device box status

Hello,

I have remote database (teradata) connected to mainframe using FICON channel
(Type=dummy). Every time; there is a drop/glitch in network
(microseconds) my mainframe devices get boxed and solution is to shutdown task,
recycle devices, sometime it force to recycle chipids.
Is there any way to increase network tolerance time to avoid device box status?

Thanks,

There are two main issues here

1) I can not allocate this many datasets to
A job step that’s includes using SVC 99

2) The job step times out because I have reached a 5 minute CPU time limit on
the job step

Sri from my understanding said DFSORT can overcome these two problems

I’m looking at the DFSORT manual

FW: z14 ZR1 CE LR LSYSTEM not found

2020-09-14 Thread Mazer Ken G
Make sure you have an odd number of twists in between the two CEC's. Each
jumper cable counts as one twist. If you're connected via dark fiber then make
sure that has a twist in the path. If you can't change the ends of the dark
fiber you might be able to separate one end of an LC jumper cable so that you
can make a straight thru cable.

Jumper 1 - CPC to front of patch panel connection via jumper cable = 1 twist
Dark Fiber - Back of patch panel to back of patch panel = 1 twist
Jumper 2 - Front of patch panel to second CPC = 1 twist

In summary if your dark fiber doesn't have a twist that 2 twists, and you need
an odd amount. So either swap the A/B ends on the dark fiber or on one of the
jumper cables.

Hi

The CSYSTEM and LSYSTEM is an actual status via the service element while
looking at the channel problem determination of the VCHPD.

The weird part is, the new system can see both the local (itself) and
connecting system (production) but the current system running production can
only see the connecting system but not itself.

I've verified the IOCDS and also sent it to IBM to make sure I'm not missing
something. They have found nothing wrong after checking the SE log and the
IOCDS from both machines.

When I display the channel on any running lpar (D M=CHP(xx)), I receive
physical - not operational logical - online.
I"ve taken the channels offline via MVS commands on all active lpars as well as
the CFs and then brought them back online but it still won't give me a physical
online.

I'm at a total loss as to where to go or what to do to fix this issue.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Re: Punched cards and character set

2020-06-02 Thread Mazer Ken G
Here's a site that may have more info for your reading pleasure,
http://www.punchcardreader.com/
I have used this service to decode several hundred punched cards several years
ago.
The historical society that I'm a member of has thousands of punched cards with
no real way to read them anymore. To compound not being able to read the
punches these cards also contain handwritten data on each card.
We have cards that contain train crew records, static data like employee name,
employee number, employee phone number and other stuff. Handwritten data
appears to be a months' worth of dates for when they worked that month/day.
We also have cards that contain train movements. The punched data would be for
a symbolled train and it starting location with time of call and a destination
location. Handwritten info would include employees name for (Engineer,
Fireman, Conductor, Flagman, Brakeman).
All of these cards are from 1972-1975.

My point is that punched cards were used for many different reasons and many
different ways.
If I remember correctly the Western Maryland Railway was one of the first if
not the first railroad to incorporate the use of IBM computers and punched card.

Subject: Punched cards and character set

I have never used punched cards, so forgive me my questions.

As far as I know, a character set on punched cards was somehow limited, so it
is not EBCDIC or similar set of 256 characters.
Of course that means some limitations for DD * datasets - if coded on real
punched cards.
Nowadays I'm pretty sure DD * accept every possible character, as any other
dataset (with some exception for delimiter). Note, it is program independent -
this is a change within system (JES2, Interpreter, whatever).

Q1: how it was in the past? I mean, were the DD * limited to "punched card"
character set? Or it was always full EBCDIC if the job was read from DASD?

Q2: What about character set on the cards? Was it always one and the same
within S/360 family? I noted there were several character sets, but as far as I
understand those set was for other machines (Remington,
pre-S360 IBM machines, etc.)
Was there any name for card character set? I mean something like "CP 037" or so.

And another question, or rather kind request: Does anynone have JCL statements
on punched cards? I would like to get/download some images of JOB, EXEC, and DD
statements on punched cards. I have a lot of card pictures, but none with JCL.

Jerry,

We have 5 CECs in one IODF. Are you using HCD or HMC? Either way it's
possible to combine the three IODFs into one, I would probably do one at a time.

#1) From the processor list you can COPY from the current IODF to a new
target IODF.
#2) Your SNA Network name needs to match and the CECs need to be in the
same HMC network. We have standalone CFs which don't have z/OS images and
we're able to write the IOCDS without any issues.

Re: IODF Activation Question

2020-05-20 Thread Mazer Ken G
Mark,

You've indicated that you have 8 systems in a sysplex does that mean 8 CEC or 8
z/OS systems?
How many CEC's do you have?
Are you doing POR for each CEC?
In the RESET profile you point to the IOCDS slot that you'll POR from. In
SYS1.IPLPARM(LOADxx) you should specify "**" in columns 10 & 11. This will
cause the latest POR activated IODF to be read.
Word of caution, if you don't share DASD between each of the systems, make sure
you have the same IODF accessible to each system. You may need to DUMP, FTP,
RESTORE to get it to the other systems.

If you can dynamically activate, you'll want to do software activates on all
but one LPAR, this is where you'll want to do a hardware activate.
If you're unable to do a dynamic hardware activate then it's POR time.

Hope this helps.

Don,

Is your Visara connected via OSA-ICC? Does the console in question receive the
OSA-ICC three line display?
You didn't indicate the reason for running Standalone DFDSS, did you get a new

The reason I ask these questions is that we just replaced z13's with z14's and
the OSA Express6s cards are a little different as they now have TLS 1.0 enabled.
It could be that you need to update your certs on the Visara for the sessions
to connect.

Re: HMC System Monitor App

2019-06-03 Thread Mazer Ken G
Skip,

I remember this being a pain to setup and test initially. But we did finally
get it to work.
Directions below are basic and you're already past some of these steps, but I'm
including them if others want to follow along.

Using an ID with SYSPROG permissions:
Single Click on "HMC Management", left side of screen.
On the right side of the screen locate icon "Monitor System Events" and single
click.
This opens a new window for the "Event Monitor Summary"
You'll want to fill in your SMTP server, SMTP port & Notification
delay(seconds).
Select any of the monitors "zProcessors" then single click on "Edit..." button.
This will open a new window "Event Monitor Editor"

We have ours set to Hardware Messages for all of the target zProcessors.
Our pattern is set to ".*# any hardware message"
Our schedule is set to: - All days (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday & Saturday)
Our notification list - This is where you type in the email addresses of the
persons who get notified. The emails addresses are separated by a single space.
Finally click "OK" to save what was entered.

This brings you back to the "Event Monitor Summary" dialog which from here you
can click on "Test..." to test the "Test Event Generator"
Set what you want to test and then "Run Test..."

Not sure this will assist as it sounds like you may have another issue.

We’re wading into the HMC System Monitor app in order to get additional alerts
for significant events. Unfortunately we can’t figure how to get beyond Square

On HMC task list, select Monitor System Events, which shows this list of
'permitted objects': Adapters, BladeCenters, Blades, Ensemble, HMC Optical
Network, Managed VM, Partitions, Systems, Virtual Servers, Workloads, None.

Up comes a screen entitled Event Monitor Summary, which displays this list of
monitors:

Accelerator
Crypto
HW Msg Example
Network
OS Msg Example
Partition
Processor (CPU)
Security Log Example
State Change Example
Storage

Each item is selectable, but no matter which one we select with Add or Edit, we
get this message:

There are no defined objects to monitor for the event type of the selected
monitor.
Select a monitor with a different event type or define an object that can be
monitored for the event type of the selected monitor.

ACT04318

We have poked around--including Google searches--until our fingers are
calloused, but we cannot find out how to 'define an object'. The particular
monitor we're interested in is Processor (CPU), but the missing object issue
seems to affect all listed options. Has anyone delved into this arena?

Yes, there are jobs in the tapetool utilities (COPYRFSH) that will allow one to
sync clusters within a grid, there's a whitepaper on techdocs that explains the
process.
We've been working this process for about a month now. We went from a two way

We're in the process of doing COPYRFSH of all of the data before the merge.

CHPIDs for HyperSwap Target Subsystem

2018-10-19 Thread Mazer Ken G
When setting up a HyperSwap target subsystem in HCD does anyone know if the
same CHPIDs have to be used or can you use different CHPIDs?

We have a subsystem with 20480 Mod-54 devices that we need to be able to
HyperSwap to a new subsystem.
I'm unable to use the same CHPIDs for both due to exceeding the number of
devices per CHPID, 32760, by 8192.
I can define new CHPIDs for the HyperSwap target subsystem but they would only
be used while we were in a HyperSwap situation, not very often we're hoping.

XCF ARM for Automation

2018-05-21 Thread Mazer Ken G
Sometime ago it was suggest that we have a XCF ARM Policy so that our
automation product automatically restart if it went down.
We've never setup an ARM policy and I'm looking for a sample, other than the
one in SAMPLIB. Anyone have a simple one they would be willing to share?

Thanks,

Number of Cylinders per Volume

2018-01-09 Thread Mazer Ken G
While configuring CKD storage on a new IBM DS8880 I discovered that the default
number of cylinders for a 3390-27 and a 3390-54 has changed.
Caution should be taken when your defining new storage.

I've always assumed that a 3390-27 had 32,760 cylinders. Not the case anymore,
if using the GUI and the DISK or Mod1 calculations. You end up getting 30,051
cylinders.
I've also assumed that a 3390-54 had 65,520 cylinders. Now the default number
of cylinders is 60,102.

These new calculations are now divisible evenly by 1113, a 3390 Mod-1

If you have a need to define these two volumes sizes please keep this in mind
as this could cause serious issues when trying to migrate from the older volume
sizes to the newer sizes.
I did find the new smaller sizes documented in the DS8870 & DS8880 Architecture
and Implementation Redbooks.

Incorrect z Systems machine information

2017-12-13 Thread Mazer Ken G
Anyone ever receive emails from IBM about z Systems machine information that
you're not registered to receive?

For example this morning I received notification for a 2096 with a serial
number that we've never owned or leased.
The machine 2096-X is back level on MCL activation. There are 49 MCLs
missing including 0 Hipers, 0 Disruptive and 0 Configuration Dependent. There
are 49 MCLs received that are not active. The last MCL activation was done on
28 Oct 2013.

I've X'd out the serial number for obvious reasons. Oh and the link that's
provided gets a 404 error when you try to look it up in Resource Link.

Just wondering if anyone else gets this same kind of notifications.

Round 2 of LCU DASD Configurations with EAV Volumes

2016-10-27 Thread Mazer Ken G
Sorry for the formatting of the first message. I forgot HMTL not supported and
the excel table got out of whack. Hopefully this will work out better.

We're in the process of configuring two new IBM DS8886 for EAV volumes and I
have a few questions for the storage experts

Keeping in mind that each LCU on the DS8Ks only support 256 unit addresses.

Our current methodology is to configure each LCU on the DS8Ks with 128 base
devices and 32 alias devices leaving room for 96 more alias if required.
By configuring only 128 base devices we're able to maximize our addressing from
within HCD by using 00-7F for the first LCU and 80-FF in the next LCU.  So as
an example:

HCD HCD
Device PAV Logical PAV Drive Gb
AddrAddrVolumes Count Emulation Capacity
LCU
8000-7F 18000-1F128 32 Mod-54 7128.240538 00
8080-FF 18080-9F128 32 Mod-54 7128.240538 00

LCU 00 has unit addresses 00-7F configured as 8000-807F with MOD-54 base
devices and the Alias devices are from C0 to FF and use 18000-1801F in HCD.

My question is how many unit addresses are you using per LCU for EAV volumes?
Has anyone set an EAV standard volume size and what are you using?

We started with 262,668 CYLs per volume but now we're looking at 524,160 as
that's equal to eight mod-54s.
Anyone have any this large and if so any problems?

Thanks,

Ken Mazer
