[efloraofindia:208640] Dianthus (Caryophyllaceae)

2014-12-10 Thread J.M. Garg
Dear members,

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Dianthus
https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a---l/c/caryophyllaceae/dianthus
(Pl.
click).

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in
India nearby areas with details keys directly or through links as far
as possible. It’s quite possible that there may be some discrepancy in the
accepted names synonyms taken from other links.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the
page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see
all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source
references it will be wonderful.

Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

Not a legume; it is a Boraginaceae plant.
Way back in early 1990s we collected it from the same area and tried to

Hydrophyllaceae or Boraginaceae. Even scientist at FRI were not able to ID
it. Based on the family I searched it in FRI herbarium and identified it as
 *Wigandia
caracasana* (Boraginaceae) but it took a long effort. This plant is a
forein element in India and has naturalized; not only naturalized but
spreading all along the road in the area. Excited with this, we thought to
report its naturalization in India. But based on our specimens somebody
from FRI published its naturalization in India even before this.
Those were the days without web. Now it has become easier to ID a species.

[efloraofindia:208650] Re: Pteris cretica?/ABDEC22

2014-12-10 Thread Ashwini Bhatia
Thank you Dr Chris. Is there anything I can do in the absence of a chromosome
count to get a clearer picture?

wrote:

 Hello Ashwini,
Yes, this is P. cretica - which has two slightly different and
cytologically different subspecies, recognisable from the teeth on the
sterile fronds. My general impression is that this might perhaps be subsp.
laeta, the triploid, which would be interesting as subsp. cretica (diploid)
is supposed to be more common in the west. But I'm not very confident in
this case, as some parts show the more regular teeth of subsp. cretica. If
only one of Dr. Khullar's students at Panjab Univ. could get a chromosome
count of this plant (unfortunately they don't do mititoic counts from
root-tips), it would be helpful to me to adjust taxonomic concepts of the
 frond-morphology of the two subspecies.
The wavy edges are like subsp. laeta - but on second thoughts I think
those marginal teeth are too regular, so perhaps subsp. cretica is more
likely after all! Difficult! If I had it in hand I might be able to get a
better impression. Both subspecies are common.
  Cheers,
 Chris F.-J.

Most have three pair of simple pinnae with the bottom pair extra-winged. The
longest pinna is at the apex. The edges are sharply serrated and
parallel/forked veins are clearly defined around a protruding costa on

The first image contains only inflorescence buds covered by involucal
bracts, which are caducous in nature, there is opened flowers.
And the second one is shoot buds covered by perulate scales...are
characteristic of the genus Neolitsea not Litsea. In the case of the Genus
Litsea involucral bracts of the umbels are persistent.
Definitely this is the genus Neolitsea and species level identification needs
flowers and fruits. This genus have male and female tree separate.

 Hope this helps...

[efloraofindia:208695] Re: Hooghly-skDec06- : Leea robusta Roxb.?

2014-12-10 Thread surajit koley
One point goes against this plant to be *Leea robusta* Roxb. - as per
Haines *L. robusta* has leaflets with about 11-13 pair of secondary nerves
above the 5-7 nerved base. In these leaflets I can see only upto 10 pairs
of sec. nerves.

It is also to be noted that FoC thinks *L. robusta* Roxb.
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2taxon_id=242328701 is
synonymous with *L. macrophylla* Roxb. ex Hornem.

The number of secondary nerves of this species tally with *Leea aequata* L.

As per Haines leaflets of *L. aequata* L. somewhat resemble with those of *L.
sambucina* (*Leea indica* (Burm. f.) Merr.). That is why another post I
submitted earlier, identified as *L. indica*, is actually a *L. aequata* L.
As per Bengal Plants *L. indica* is not found in central Bengal.

Leaflets of *L. aequata* L. are acuminate or caudate-acuminate, which can
be seen in my earlier uploads.

In this plant, leaflets are not acuminate. Yet it can be *L. aequata* for
its terminal rhomboid-lanceolate leaflet. At least number of sec. nerves
tallies.

Thank you
Regards

On Wed, Dec 10, 2014 at 10:59 PM, surajit koley
surajitnotavaila...@gmail.com wrote:

I am back with *Leea*! And this time I found out that *L. macrophylla* Hornem.
may have pinnate leaves, as per Haines's observation. Please check the
entry by Haines in his book, BoBO.

Today I went to Rajhat (near Bandel Rly stn.) Rajhat is known for its
peacock conservation, but I didn't see any! Instead I found a *Leea* in
 bamboo thicket.

I regret that I haven't learnt any lesson (to examine the underside of the
leaflets) from my earlier posts, which are certainly *L. aequata* L. (you
 agree or not)-

1.

 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/indiantreepix/2zAGVeGlkno/pXKUQ21AAvYJ
2.

 https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/indiantreepix/n2iG0-D0TAw/nVFoPplDE3EJ

As per distribution of species in West Bengal this *Leea* in this thread,
a four ft herb (still now) is either 1) *macrophylla* or 2) *aequata* or
 3) *robusta*.

I think this is not *L. macrophylla*, because all leaves are 2-pinnate.

The pen used for comparing is 5.75 inch long.

Comparing the width of the leaflets I think it may be *L. robusta* Roxb.

 Thank you
 Regards

I am attached to a group that shares pictures of wild plants of West
Bengal, for identification or otherwise. Sometimes I try to identify and
othertimes I fail. The group is not much active, me too!

In that group I have a friend, another Didi - Ruby Di.

About a year ago, in that facebook group, when I posted a flower of
 *Jatropha

 (PUTUL = Doll; GACH = tree/plant)

I enquired, What is PUTUL GACH, Ruby Di?

Ruby Di replied, Er phaler bhetar choto choto putul thake, amra
chotobelay deshlai bakse pasha-pashi shuie rekhe kheltam!
(Small dolls can be found inside the fruits of this shrub, we used to

I thanked Ruby Di a lot for this hidden treasure of *Jatropha*!
