I have a nice verie letter from them on the KAKA letterhead for a frequency
check in 1963.  The interesting part about the call didn't strike me until
now.  Ah, the purity of youth.  Your point is well taken though, John.  :-)

I also vaguely remember that they had another interesting call a number of
years ago:  KAKA.  I don't believe that call lasted too long.  Much more
appropriate for AM radio now than it was then. - John

[IRCA] BOGish sky loop

2014-11-03 Thread Bob Coomler via IRCA
---BeginMessage---

BOGs work.  Sky loops work.  Was wondering how a ground mounted loop might
work as a non-directional receiving antenna. I can easily lay out a 300' loop
in my back yard (more with creative geometry).  The best test is to just do it
of course, but was wondering if anyone has any experience with this
configuration?

---BeginMessage---
Not to be confused with the current BOG thread.  :-)
Many thanks to Dennis Vroom, Larry Fravel, Jim Balle and Russ Edmonds for
sharing their thoughts and experiences.  It can't be a permanent installation,
but by including the front yard, I should be able to extend this to about 480
feet.  This could be fun.  It will have to wait until early December as we are
heading out early next week to Iceland to (hopefully) see the aurora borealis
and then to New Hampshire to see our daughter and her family.
As to Iceland, if anybody would like me to listen for anything specific, let me
know.  I'll be taking along my Sony ICF-SW7600GR and/or Tecsun PL-660.

 Subject: [IRCA] Headphones

I'm looking for a new set of headphones to replace older ones that have fallen
apart. My older ones cost around $100 a few years ago and were
noise-cancelling. Not the most comfortable on the ears, but tolerable. Checking
at The Source, Canada's version of Radio Shack, I was I was shocked at the
plethora of headphones available, and the price - all over $300 (with noise
cancellation).
At that price I can live without noise cancellation! But I am floored by the
sheer variety available at The Source, and also at big-box chains like Best Buy
and Future Shop.
Anyone have any favourites for DXing? I'm looking to spend $150 or less -
optimally $50-$100 - and am looking primarily for comfort. Some pairs I've
tried squish the ears. Noise cancellation would be a plus. There are times when
I don't want outside distractions.
Any recommendations?

KSHE gets out well in this direction in spite of only 1.5 kW day power as they

It looks like I am lucky as the noise level here in Arizona is very low.  When
I left Portland 11 years ago the noise level was very high and very little
could be heard but its a lot different here in Arizona with the low noise
level.  I have talked to Hams and they also say that the noise level is low
here and I hope it stays that way.

Patrick, we are in Seattle on our way home from a cruise that started in Seward
and ended in Vancouver, BC.  I did some "DXing Lite", but as it was right at
the solstice, was pleased to hear anything. With the extended daylight and
twilight hours there, listening seemed to be very, very long sunset skip
sessions (which was great. SSS is my fav).  Based on your experience, is this
truly the case or wishful thinking on my part? Regardless, a fun trip on all
counts.

One of the local Puget Sound area pest stations has provided a big thrill for a
Japanese DXer. Hiroyuki Okamura of Yokosuka, Japan has posted a video of his
reception of 1470-CJVB (Vancouver, BC) across the Pacific on his new "barefoot"
3" FSL Tecsun PL-380 model last night. Hiroyuki seems thrilled by his "Science
Fiction PL-380" catch-- maybe one man's pest is another's treasure?

I didn't realize it until we were in Cuba that taking a GPS in was illegal (we

If nothing else, seeing the circuit boards they use to make a transmitter
"wobble" would be educational.  Not to mention figuring out what the thinking
behind this highly unusual mode actually is.

DXpedition from eastern end of Cuba would also be interesting, i.e. what
US/Canada stations, Caribbeans, South / Central Americans, and TA's would you
typically hear?  Would they even let a potential "spy" radio like a Perseus,
Excalibur, or Elad into the country (not to mention the PC to run it)?
Ultralight with FSL might also get dirty looks.

Downtime could entail making a photo gallery of the world's biggest living
museum of classic cars.

Maybe you could get hold of Arnie Coro CO2KK of DXers Unlimited on Radio
Havana? I've been wanting to go for a while, my wife is from Peru and I could
have flown there at anytime (I think) from Peru but never did. She's been there
several times.

Yes, this is DX related - let me explain!

I had lunch today with Rick Lucas, who's just back from a two-week tour of
Cuba. At least for now, US regulations require that US citizens visiting Cuba
have an educational purpose for their trip, which typically means a lot of
"person-to-person" activities like meeting farmers and watching dance troupes
and such. (Canadians and others can go to Cuban resorts and lounge on the beach
if they so desire...)

But it occurred to us that if we could get enough DXers and other radio folk
together, it might be possible to organize a trip that would focus on Cuban
radio - visiting studios and transmitter sites, interacting with Cuban radio
people and DXers, meeting with Arnie Coro, and so on.

I'm not going quite so far (yet!) as to bid for a Havana convention in 2017 or
2018...but I'm curious to find out whether anyone else would be interested in a
hypothetical week-long trip next winter. If there's interest, I'd be willing to
reach out to the tour companies that have licenses to organize Cuba trips to
see what the next steps might be.

So...any interest?

When I lived in northern California, Radio Rossii on 279 was fairly dependable
and a good friend.  It didn't interfere with NDB chasing, was well programmed
and the announcer was sooo mellow.  The other frequencies were hit or miss, but
always fun to chase.  After moving to Tucson, 279 was the only one that was
able to make the trip and was sporadic at best.  Time and radio move on.

Well, not exactly a dozen on LW in Siberia, Colin:

153 was Komsomolsk, Khabarovskiy Krai
180:  Petropavlsovsk-Kamchatskiy
189:  Belogorsk, Amurskaya oblast
234:  Arman, Magadan
243:  Razdolnoe
261:  Chita (very rarely heard)
279:  was Yuzno Sakhalinsk, usually the strongest (and closest to us).

234 and 243 were the first to disappear, followed by the others.

Seeing reports of TA activity I finally thought to give it a try
tonight, using my N/S and E/W longwires. Lots of MW hets though nothing
close to producing audio, but LWBC doing much better. It's probably been
5 years since I moved from the Oregon site where I had longwires and had
some decent LWBC reception, so it's very nice to see I can also get some
of that again here, much farther south. The S9 to S9+10 constant storm
static tonight isn't helping, but I am hearing some audio.

near Sahuarita, AZ

R75; 750' N/S and 950' E/W longwires (both do about the same for these
TA LWBC, I note.)

(153 strong het but can't pull any audio out; almost seems like just the
carrier is left on with no modulation?)

162 France very poor/poor on peaks 0418

171 Morocco poor 0430

252 Ireland weak on peaks, would be perfectly readable except for the S9

(Weak hets on 189 and 198; hard to tell above that due to NDB carriers
every 1 kHz; 252 is strong enough to easily produce audio.)

Re: [IRCA] Flying from Canada to Hawaii

2016-12-25 Thread Bob Coomler via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Colin,  Last year my wife and I rented a small cabin near Honokaa on the Big
Island for our anniversary.  I packed my Winradio SDR and an active antenna and
all the attendant power supplies, cables, etc.  I put all the "stuff" where it
was immediately visible (not like I was trying to sneak something by our cranky
TSA agents here) along with a super brief explanation and a copy of my ham
license. Probably overkill, but everything went through seamlessly.
Merry Christmas!

It's been 4 years since I have flown to Hawaii -- and "way back when" I did not
spend that much time stressing about which radio to take, carry on board or
check in luggage in mini pelican cases...

Just wondering if anything has changed.
In 2010 I loaded up a Lowe-Pro jumbo camera bag with around 10 pounds of stuff:
EtonE1, Wellbrook antennas, power supplies, cameras and a ham radio license
displayed prominently on top of the heap.

Other than a swab of one of the radios, I found the TSA to be cheerful and good
humored - one even pointed out that his uncle was a ham.

I imagine carrying a Gary DeBock modded URL will hardly raise and eye brow in a
much smaller bag.

I might actually put an extra radio in a mini pelican case in checked luggage.

Merry Christmas everyone!

[IRCA] Fw: Big Island DXing

2017-04-12 Thread Bob Coomler via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---

No question at all that Hawaii is a great spot ... for DXing too.  :-)   My
thoughts were more based on specific locations given that most of the islands
have significant signal blocking volcanic ridges.  When I was last on the Big
Island (near Honoka'a, NE side), I had a killer spot for all but to the east,
but ended up with inescapable noise for a solar power system.  "Due diligence"
will be job #1 next time!

Much like Easter Island - the location totally puts you in the drivers seat for
some of the World's best DX -
Because you can chase Austral-Asia and the Americas.
Having heard Alaska crystal clear in Hawaii, it is well within the realm of
possibility that Europe is likely doable from Hawaii as well.
It would just take the right sort of DXer to step up and do it -
All continents on medium wave from one location -- possible from Hawaii.
Discuss.

I've been following the Kona adventures with great interest and envy.  I was
wondering, has anyone been to, or considered, listening from South Point at the
very southern end of the island or Hawi at the very north end?  Both would seem
to offer good east-west shots. Hawi has some horizon blockage to the south (no
big deal), but is a pleasant small village.  South Point can get windy, is a
bit isolated and might not be the best place to spend the night, but no
immediate blockage and very quiet electrically.

So this might be a longshot, but I'm going to Iceland for a week long
trip - driving around the entire country.  And I'm wondering if there
are any good DX cliffs with decent road access (as I won't have that
much time for setup).

I know there is only 3-4 hours of "night", but I'd love to log Greenland
for the first time or other MW stations.  I'm bringing a Tecsun 880.

Any suggestions?

I'm sure it's about #2,758 on their list of priorities, but would a friendly

Subject: [IRCA] Five DXer Session at the Rockwork Cliff

It's safe to say that this morning's ocean cliff transoceanic propagation
provided a real thrill for all five of us. Despite the need to dodge the
squatters and spread out over three different Highway 101 turnoffs, the
exceptional Kiwi propagation reminded us again how unique this wild cliff can
be.

Antenna setup in total darkness right next to total strangers is never
boring, and this morning Tom and Chuck needed some reasonable space to set up
their broadband loops. When I drove up at 1150 (0450 local time) I noticed that
Tom was setting up at Rockwork 4, and Chuck at Rockwork 3 (apparently along
with Nick, who was testing out propagation at various places with verticals).
By now Craig had become fully accustomed to my vehicle, and he showed up at a
perfect time to follow me to Rockwork 6, which had just enough space in between
the squatters to set up four large FSL's and PVC bases.

After enjoying 6 days of thrilling DU-DX on the cliff Craig had become a
pretty skillful live DXer and Baby FSL user, and by now he was fully capable of
running independently on his own. During the DXpedition he had switched to a
new-design, TSA friendly 3.5" FSL with a rubber locking collar to keep all the
ferrite rods securely in place-- and he was using it to track down almost as
much DU-DX as I was. He alerted me when stations on 531, 585, 936 and 1017 were
coming in, and mentioned that this type of DXing was so thrilling that he
needed to book a return trip next August right away.

After the session all 5 DXers got together at Rockwork 4 to discuss the
exceptional results.  1 kW Kiwi stations like 936-Chinese Voice were as strong
as they've ever been, with Nick mentioning reception of 540-Rhema (a
low-powered NZ network). Tom said he had great Kiwi conditions all over the
band, so after he and Chuck review their Perseus files this DXpedition could
well compete for the all-time Kiwi MW-DX record on the west coast (established
here in July of 2014).

Photos from this morning's session are posted at
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/0wxcc0b1cvt3220ir7htdouddcmnngp4 (Craig, Chuck,
Tom and Nick at Rockwork 4) and at

Colin,
Keep an open mind.  I have a Winradio G31 SDR.  I have never used the recording

make the change, but no regrets.  I miss the tactile finger tip and visual

All good comments - my current reluctance to join the SDR crowd is the expense
of buying a Perseus and then getting a laptop with enough horsepower to operate
it...

For me, another strike against is the whole concept of scooping a swath of
spectrum and “listening to” or searching it “later on...”

I work - and I have zero time for hunching over a laptop and snooping through
WAV files looking for DX that happened 8-12 hours earlier.

Maybe when I’m retired.

I am amped about getting a BeagleBone webSDR up an running from my QTH but was
choked when I looked at how expensive it was to get one to CANADA around
twice the price of one in the USA.

I’ll revisit that soon - the idea of having a self contained web receiver with
a dedicated processor is appealing. Having an SDR that is dépendant on the
whims of Bill Gates and Windows holds ZERO appeal. Unlink thé receiver concept
from a Windows O/S and I’m in.

RQM in Maine transmits on 221 MHz and I had to make sure that I was not

By the way, RMQ is the three-letter designator for an airport in Taiwan

Nice TOH ID from KMSD at 2200 MST on both the "regular" radio and barefoot ULR.
1060 is all presumed XEEP.

Paul,

Thanks for the tips on the outages on 1510 and 1550. I started listening at
6:49 PM (0049 UTC). As of 8:23 PM (0223 UTC), both KCKK and KKCL are still off.
I just got a nice CL ID from KMSD, presumably on CH power of 1 kW, over/under
WLAC.

OK, now you've got me feeling old.  My Mom used to take me shopping at that
Bullocks. A classy joint!

Kind of interesting that Bullocks Department Store owned KNN, much like
Wanamakers Department Store in Philidelphia owned WOO.

The former Bullocks Wilshire building in Los Angeles will house the new Academy
Motion Picture Arts Museum, opening soon.
