JNI to choose? 1.0 or 1.1 JDK
Hey all, This is particularly aimed at people in the porting team and others with source access. Does anyone know how AWT performs callbacks? Particularly of interest is the API used. Is this the JDK 1.0 or JDK 1.1 JNI model being used. I never got the 1.1 JNI callbacks to work but the 1.0 works fine. I am concerned with future support for the 1.0 JNI model and do not want to invest heavily if they are likely to go away soon. Of course if they are used in the core product then I think I may be safe for a while. -- Tony Dean Linux: The choice of a GNU Generation!
Re: [off-topic] stop bashing!
I'd much perfer that you private porting club become public. Ur hiding behind the NDA, just makes u appear to be in the marketeering pockets os SUN. This can be exemplified by the way that the JDK 1.2 release announcement was made by SUN before any announcements on the normal channels at blackdown. U'r exclusive sun/java-linux-porting allience, appears to me to be outside of the linux community ethical standards. I'm sorry but thats how i feel. And the blackdown java-linux-porting group has done nothing at all to change this, but has done quite a bit to re-assure me that NOT Joining was the right thing to do. Can I presume thet the Death of the Non-Commercial Licensing for the JDK 1.2 was in part because ur private porting group signed a commercial licensing agreement with sun.? Or maybe you folks dont realize what u did. I Guess its no different that what the movie "BRAVEHEART" depicted when *some* of the scotish nobility sold out their country to the king of england. As for Joining, historically speeking, when the porting efforts was quite young, I did in fact do a "subscribe java-linux-porting" once. It was reject by Karl Asha, because I didn't provide a piece of code from the JDK source - to demonstrate that I had aquired a sun license. Some discussion ensued about the necessisity of this, and chose not to join. group philosophy was quite different also then. offers to Joining only came recently, after many years of doing my porting without any assistence by your group. Something was up, only later did I find out that your group aquired/signed the commercial license to port 1.2. I suppose it was just coincidence, i dont think so I also suppose having my diffs would make your private porting to the 'alpha' fairly easy ( I say fairly because I do not know if the JCK is neutral with respect to 32/64bit issues ). When I do my alpha ports, I feel that I am doing it for the Alpha Linux community. I'm just not ready to work for Sun guised as a linux porter. So How about dropping the Sun commercial license in favor of giving everyone in the linux community an equal opportunity at porting. gat Does anyone know how to contact "/.". I'd like to publish this BTW, u do know that NON-COMM licenses for 1.2 has stopped? Thanks for the encouragement to take the next step. I have tried to refrain in doing so. I dont think this next step is what u expected. Michael Sinz wrote: > On Tue, 22 Jun 1999 07:01:05 -0400, Uncle George wrote: > > >1) I am not a member of java-linux-porting@blackdown. Please return a long/64 bits Window address. Lemme know what gets stored in in the
java int valiable "lets_store_a_32_bit_address", which has the capacity to store 32

The "pro" version costs, but is very good and lacking the limits of plain JRun (no functionality limits, but limits on number of concurrent connections etc.) There's also the GNU JServ and GNUJSP, but I don't have experience with them. > I'm also looking for some (native if possible) JDBC-drivers for > M$SQL-server, Sybase, oracle & informix. > Any help would be appriciated ... Re: JNI to choose? 1.0 or 1.1 JDK
Hi, I cannot answer your questions directed to the porting team, but I would strongly recommend the 1.1/1.2 JNI model (there are some small extensions in 1.2). There are two major reasons: 1. libraries using the 1.1 model are to some extend portable between platforms and should be fully portable between different virtual machines on the same plattform (unless you rely on MS). 2. Sun has stated that the 1.0 model will fade. So, while jdk 1.2 still supports it for backward compatibility, the new "hotspot" VM of Sun no longer supports it. I wasn't on the list at that time, but earlier today I figured that out myself, and it's fixed it to the extent that I'm now trialling the "ideal" configuration on the live SMP server: 1.2 native threads, JIT. it goes fast :-) I haven't yet tried to see if this fixes the problem with starting the green-threads JVM on the SMP box, but it looks likely. Re: [off-topic] stop bashing!
I would just like to set some facts straight. 1. Anyone can get the full java 2 source for research, evaluation and internal use (which roughly equates to the previous non-commerical license before). You couldn't get the full source without this license before Java 2. SCSL means that you can use the source in this manner without having to sign a commercial license, the license states that to use the source commercially you need to submit a signed hard copy. 2. You need to pass the JCK/TCK tests and sign a commercial license to publically release a binary product. The blackdown group have done this and it would make things a great deal easier for Sun if other ports subscribed to the existing license since the legal work involved is being done for free for linux. 3. We would love to post alpha/linux diffs if the port can be released when it has passed the license. Perhaps even integrate back stuff that could benefit all platforms. 4. getting java on linux is one part of a forward looking vision. We want to make it a hard decision when people choose their OS, right? We need to work together, yes even make some sacrifices which are never easy, but if that helps improve the case for Linux then surely its better to make history than be history. regards calvin > Resent-Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 09:29:14 -0500 > Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 09:30:59 -0400 > From: Uncle George <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > MIME-Version: 1.0 > To: Michael Sinz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > CC: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: [off-topic] stop bashing! > Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > Resent-Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Resent-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > X-Mailing-List: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> archive/latest/209 > X-Loop: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Resent-Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > I'd much perfer that you private porting club become public. Arithmetic bug in Linux JDK 1.1.7v3
The following program causes the Linux JDK 1.1.7v3 to crash with a
SIGFPE. This is because the x86 causes an arithmetic exception when
you divide 0x8000 by -1; the JVM spec, however, says that the result
of this should be 0x8000 with NO exception thrown. (The fix is to catch
the SIGFPE and tweak the stack with the right value.)
The IBM JDK 1.1.6 works correctly in this case.

Re:Re: ServletEngine for linux
Try mySQL. It also has JDBC type-4 support and works beatifully as well. Of course Apache JServ is beatiful too. Re: Off Topic: Instalation of Visual Age
I have also unziped/untared it in /usr/local and then chown -R user where user is the user you want to run it under, then move the vajide script to ~user/bin and edit that script to give the full path to /usr/local/dir_where_you_put_vaj. Here is my edited script: #/bin/bash # This script sets the environment and launches # VisualAge for Java Professional Edition, V3 Tech Preview for Linux if [ ! -d /usr/local/vajava/ide/program ]; then echo "Please extract the VisualAge for Java for Linux tarfile in your home directory." exit fi export PATH=.:$PATH export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH __PREV_DIR=$PWD cd /usr/local/vajava/ide/program ide cd $__PREV_DIR # I have seen some people on the SoftwareSummit mail list bitching that they can not use this in a global manner. Put your gripes in a coke bottle and use it as a stool!!! Thank you IBM for taking the time to port this great IDE to Linux. Another great feature is that I can export and import projects between VAJ running at work on NT and VAJ running on my home office machine in Linux. VAJ does not appear to give a toss where the project came from. The code is there and it all just works. john On 21-Jun-99 Alex Rice wrote: > > On Mon, 21 Jun 1999 08:39:43 -0500, > Javier =?iso-8859-1?Q?Bola=F1os?= Molina <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> said: > > Javier> Sorry guys I know this is an off topic but the visual age site > Javier> doesn't work and I got it (the va for linux) but I need the > Javier> instalation instructions > > It's pretty simple: > > 1) untar it in your home directory (why it insists on this I don't know, > it's lame) > > 2) run the new script in your home directory and it will finish the > install and start the program > > 3) everything else is under ~/ide/ > > Alex Rice|[EMAIL PROTECTED]|http://www.swcp.com/~alrice > Current Location: N.
