Hi Dale: Your very welcome. I knew if I researched enough I would find something. Thank you Terrill. There are a couple of situations I run into occasionally where Jaws just dies. Nothing will bring it around until closing the entire computer down when suddenly Jaws announces logging off and down she goes and there isn't any way to know what might have brought the episode about. Hopefully this will help or at least negate the need to kill everything to get computer access back. Re: [JAWS-Users] new JAWS keystroke
Hi Christopher: If you cannot afford JAWS and are using a demo, you can still report Suggestions, Comments as well as quality suggestions and bugs you find to FS. However, I do, not think they will give free technical support if you have not purchased JAWS. . The more information they get the better able they will be to make JAWS a better product and discover incompatibilities with JAWS. Windows+Insert+F4 is only for when a total loss of speech occurs, and it is difficult or impossible to recover JAWS without rebooting the computer. However, a reboot provides no diagnostic information to assist Freedom Scientific in researching the underlying problem. New keystroke closes JAWS, terminates all related processes, and creates a memory dump file. The diagnostic information can be used to assist FS in troubleshooting problems. The memory dump file is saved to the Settings folder located in the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\\ApplicationData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\8.0\Settings\ENU. . In this folder is another folder called, JAWSMemDmp folder. The files in this folder are identified by the JAWS version and build number. The memory dump file has diagnostic information that can be used to assist FS in diagnosing problems. The more information they have then the better they can tell which drivers, programs etcetera are causing JAWS problems; so it is just helping them to make a better product for us. Re: [JAWS-Users] new JAWS keystroke, found the key jaws uses forlaptops; no need to remap
Oh cool!
True, but I found out that FS has made a keystroke for those who use a laptop without a windows key, as long as you have the laptop layout set in basic options, so there's no need to remap the keys if you don't have a windows key. : To assist users of laptop computers, an additional keystroke for this facility has been provided, which is Shift+Caps Lock+F12 (assuming the laptop layout has been selected). [JAWS-Users] new JAWS keystroke, found the key jaws uses for laptops; no need to remap
Hi Dale: Well some good news I think. I found the below information. You will not have to remap your keyboard at all it seems. FS has provided a way around using the windows key with a laptop as long as you're using the laptop layout in the basic options of jaws. Amen brother. I've seen this complaining on two different lists now. Rick - Original Message - From: "Terrill Reynolds" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 8:12 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Complaining about Complainers Some of the shortcuts are difficult to implement for a reason. Namely so you do not accidentally hit the key by mistake when it's not meant for anything but extreme emergencies. If you just take the time to read the help, one can avoid getting into situations which one would not be if they took the time to learn what a certain key is for. As for complaining on the list, it will get you know where. If one wants to complain then complain to the maker of the product and not to someone who is trying to help you. It is my understanding this list is about helping people and not for complaining about something you don't like instead of asking for help. When some one tries to help out another and gets nothing but complaints in return then that's just plain rude. The list should be about helping others with problems and not complaining about everything they do not like. There are other forums for that as well as it serves no purpose since the real people who need to hear complaints is the product makers and not people who are just trying to help others. You ask others not to be judgmental, but I'm sorry but your message is about as judgmental as I've ever read. Re: [JAWS-Users] Complaining about Complainers
Some of the shortcuts are difficult to implement for a reason. Well now I am pretty well used to the laptop keyboard and like it except for that inconvenience. carrying around a second keyboard doesn't enhance portability much. There are a few useless keys though, PrintScreen, ScrollLock, Pause for example which don't seem to do anything for anyone. Thanks. Hi: yes it would unfortunately. The alt key would no longer function as an alt key but a windows key. You can map another key though. I just used the alt key as an example. In order to pick another key Below is a web page with a list of Keyboard Scan Codes for Windows 2k and XP. http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/input/Scancode.mspx Just substitute the key you wish to use; however this is kind of advanced registry editing. the most simple solution is to purchase either a wireless USB keyboard or a regular USB keyboard that already has the windows keys on it and use it with your laptop. Re: [JAWS-Users] CA internet security suite
Chris, A number of JAWS users would have emailed Computer Associates over the years concerning issues they had, and mentioned JAWS. (I'm thinking particularly of the CA Etrust EZ antivirus software, which *used to be* very accessible to JAWS. Also, Freedom Scientific and the others will sometimes approach mainstream companies in attempting to get their softwares to co-operate. - Original Message - From: "Christopher Hallsworth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "JAWS-Users" Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 5:27 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] CA internet security suite My goodness, a mainstream company knows about JAWS? In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, this must be done either through a third party mapping utility or by editing the registry. You will have to Map the right ctrl-key (code E0 1D) to the left windows key (E0 5B) **I think the easiest solution is to purchase an External USB keyboard for your laptop. However, if you want to try to map a key to be the windows key below is how. The scan code mappings for Windows 2K and XP are stored in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout IMPORTANT: There is also a Keyboard Layouts key under the Control key, but that key should not be modified. In the Keyboard Layout key, the Scancode Map value must be added. This value is of type REG_BINARY. To make the Alt key to remap to become a Windows key. Here is how to do it: Copy the below lines in note pad, and save it as a text file and rename it to something like, "altEquilsWinKey.reg". Then enter on it and answer yes when asked if you want to import it into your registry. Start copying below: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout] "Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,5B,E0,38,E0,00,00,00,00 End copying. Now save it and give it the extension of .reg. Once the map is stored in the registry, a system reboot is required to activate it. The mappings stored in the registry work at system level and apply to all users. These mappings cannot be set to work differently depending on the current user. Re: [JAWS-Users] new JAWS keystroke
Well all I can tell you is that if you have a problem with it, don't use it or call FS since it was them who implemented it. Seems when FS makes something to help them find out what is causing problems with peoples computer and jaws, instead of working with them, more just complain and do nothing Again I am just reporting a new jaws keystroke from freedom scientific; if you have a problem I suggest you call them and discuss your problems with it.rather than just complaining on the list. I did not make this key nor am I a employee of FS. Fortunately it works fine for me, but if you have problems then report it to FS so they can make their product better for all of us. make their product better. . Or, do they have an FN key that can be used in conjunction with another key to produce the desired? - Original Message - From: "Annette Carr" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 1:55 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] new JAWS keystroke Wow, now I have yet another reason why I've avoided ThinkPads all of these years. It is my understanding that there are utility programs out there that will let you re-assign a control key or Alt key to be a Windows key. However, you should know that there has been problems with getting these utilities to work. Re: [JAWS-Users] new JAWS keystroke
Hi Dale, I've owned three ThinkPads in my time, and all of them had a Windows key. It's usually the third key from the left of the control key on the left hand side of the keyboard. The series is as follows: Control, followed by the function key, followed by the Windows key, then the alt key,, spacebar, alt again, then the applications key and another control key. Some do come with an extra windows key on the right hand side, but it would depend on the series of notebook and screen size you have. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] new JAWS keystroke
Well for the fun of it I've tried the keystroke, and not only did JAWS not reload automatically, it also mesed up my virtual cursor so had to restart Firefox, so guess there's a bug or two somewhere? It certainly does its job, but with the above issues it can be annoying if you were reading a web page, then JAWS suddenly stopped talking, so you pressed that keystroke only to find that JAWS didn't reload automatically, and, when you do reload it manually you then find your virtual cursor is blank and there's no way around that but to restart your browser.
