Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDFto OCR file
Hello Listers, I haven't experimented with the feature yet, but I have noticed that, in the latest version of Kurzweil 1000, version 12, there is an option via the applications menu to, having selected a relevant document in a directory, convert image document using Kurzweil. Regards, Riana -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Lee Sent: Monday, May 03, 2010 3:29 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDFto OCR file Hello Joanne, If when you open the PDF in the Adobe Reader you hear alert: empty document announced then the file is likely an image of a printed page that has been scanned. I found that a small freeware program called FreeOCR can usually do quite a good job on this kind of file. If you have Kurzweil, OpenBook, OmniPage or another commercial OCR program then you should be able to run OCR on the file and get the desired results. Here is a link to FreeOCR if you want to download it. After the link are some steps to follow when using the program for a scanned image file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3951772/freeocr.exe 1.Install FreeOCR by pressing enter key or double-clicking on the downloaded file. 2.Follow prompts to install the software. An icon will be created on the desktop. 3.You might want to restart your system when installation is complete, although the program doesn't tell you that a restart is required. 4.Press enter key or double-click the FreeOCR icon on the desktop to start the program. 5.Use Alt+F to bring up the file menu, use down arrow to the load PDF choice and press enter key. 6.Browse to the PDF file to be used and open it. 7.Press alt+O to go into the OCR menu and press enter key on the start OCR process choice. 8.Use tab key to move into the edit area that tells you that focus is in page 1. 9.After waiting some time for processing to finish use Alt+T to go into the text menu, use down arrow to the copy text to clipboard choice and press enter key. 10. Open up your word processing program and paste the text. 11. The top few lines will be text from the FreeOCR program so you can select it and delete it. The main text of the document should start right after the text you are going to delete. 12. An alternative to copying the text to the clipboard is to use the save text choice in the text menu of FreeOCR after processing the image file. A dialog box will appear for you to name the file and save it where you want it. You can then open the file in Notepad from where it is stored. I have had success using programs to change the PDF to TIF files and then using the Microsoft Document Writer to extract the text into a document, but this program actually gave me better results and worked faster. If you have the Microsoft Document Image Writer installed you can do the following: 1. Open the PDF file in the Adobe Reader and you will hear alert: empty document. 2. Press CTRL+P to go into the print dialog box. 3. Use tab key to the list of printers and then use up or down arrow keys to find the Microsoft Document Image Writer choice and press enter key. 4. A SaveAs box will appear with .TIF shown in the file types list. Name the file and save it as a TIF file. 5. Open all programs from the start menu, open the Microsoft office group, open the Office tools, and use down arrow to the choice for Microsoft office Document Imaging. Press enter on that choice. 6. Press alt+T to go into the tools menu and press enter key on the recognize text using OCR choice. 7. A dialog box will appear where you can tell the program to recognize all pages. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key. 8. Wait for processing to finish. 9. Press Alt+T again and use down arrow to the send text to Word choice and press enter key. 10.Use tab a couple of times and find out what the default location for the document will be and then tab to OK and press enter key. 11.Wait for the file to open in Microsoft Word. Although using the Microsoft Document Image Writer has worked for me, I have had better output using the FreeOCR program. It is also easier to use and you only need to use the one program. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] USB BROAD BAND STICK A.K.A. AIR CARD
Susie, Yes it is an internet stick. Alot of the cellular companies around here refer to them as the air card. A friend of mine who is sighted had hers through another company and also said that there is a connect button screen before entering the internet on hers as well. Mine was through the widely known A T T and hers was through Cricket. I spoke with technical support and the disability office at A T T and got no resolution just a bill for the first thirty days of not being able to use my air card. I sent a message to my friend and she retyped it to her companies tech support and we never did recieve a response. Should you get an air card to try and see that it is not going to work ask them to see which amount is lower your usage cost or the monthly fee. that is one good thing about ATT they allowed me to only pay for usage which I thought was fair instead of the monthly contract fee. Unless these companies have changed their connect button at the beginning of your internet session JAWS is not going to read the connect button. Another thing someone should be aware of is they advertise sixty dollars a month however my first bill was around one hundred and fifteen dollars until I got it adjusted for just the usage. - Original Message - From: susie Q susi...@cogeco.ca To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, May 03, 2010 6:58 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] USB BROAD BAND STICK A.K.A. [JAWS-Users] MP3 splitter?
Hi All. I'm looking for a program that will convert a long MP3 file, say 8 hours in to manageable segments. Would goldwave do this? I want something ideally that will detect pauses and split based on when a pause occurs so for example if i'm converting it in to half hour sections and there's a pause after 30 minutes and 3 seconds, it'll split where the pause is and not in the middle of a word. does anything like this exist and that's accessible? Re: [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDFtoOCR file
if you have either Open Book or K1000, they both have a virtual printer. With the document on screen, go into the Print menu and in the list of available printers, you should see which ever virtual printer you have. Select it and hit the print button just like you would when you ordinarily print a document. The program will perform OCR on the document, just like it would if you scanned a printed page. Your results may vary and you may get gibberish, or you may get enough recognition to at least get the gist of what the document contains. I believe that later versions of K1000 will perform this OCR without having to use the KESI virtual printer. Re: [JAWS-Users] MP3 splitter?
Mo, This could easily and quickly be done with GoldWave. Goldwave will either automatically split the file into segments whose lengths you specify (regardless of what's happening at the split point) or you can manually go in and drop que points where you want the file split. This is pretty quick and easy since you can jump to any part of the file quickly. For example, if you wanted the file split up into roughly thirty minute segments, you could simply jumt to, say, 29 minutes and thirty seconds and start listening, dropping your que point during a pause or quiet part of the file. Then repeate at 59:30, 1:29:30, etc. I did this for a two and a half hour lecture series I recorded and managed to get the entire lecture split into approximately 5 minute segments in somewhat less than an hour. Another nice feature of GoldWave is that you can name your que points and tell the program to split the file at the que points and use the que point names as the split file names. Re: [JAWS-Users] MP3 splitter?
Mo, No. If you simply use the automatic splitter, it will create X number of files of the exact length you specify and one smaller file containing the remainder. To the best of my knowledge, there is no silence detection feature. But, as I said, doing it manually is as simple as listening for a moment of silence and pressing ctrl-Q to drop a Que point. Yes, you can do that with Goldwave. There are also specific programs for splitting mp3's, but if you are proficient in Goldwave, just use your time filemarkers and make separte files out of the segments. - Original Message - From: Mobeen Iqbal mobeeniq...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, May 03, 2010 12:07 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] MP3 splitter? Re: [JAWS-Users] MP3 splitter?
Yeah, there is a silence detection feature. The problem is whether you can set it to not have too many different tracks created. I'm not sure I have the latest version of Goldwav, but I suspect the following procedure still works in versions beyond my 5.52. 1. Open the mp3 file you want to split. 2. Press alt-e for the edit menu, and then you arrow to the cue points submenu. 3. On the edit cue points submenu, select AutoCue. 4. This will bring up a multi-tab control. There are two tabs, one is mark silences and the other is spacing. I can't get Jaws to move there by the traditional method, so if you are on the spacing tab, you'd need to use the Jaws cursor and left-click the mark silences tab. 5. Now, with the proper tab in focus, you can set the noise threshhold and length of silence. The threshhold default is -40DB that is minus 40DB. If you have a file with a bit more background noise, then you may need to increase the value to -30DB or so. 6. Set the length of the silence for what you need. If you for example had recorded a record album, you might have 3 seconds between songs. Other files you may have shorter silences. You may need to experiment with this setting. If you get too many cue points, you may need to lower the threshhold or increase the length of the silent period. 7. When you hit auto-cue, it will generate the cue points in that file. It will then list them. If you are satisfied, you can go back into the cue points submenu and hit the Split File button. If you need to change the settings because the results weren't satisfactory, remember to hit the option to delete all your existing cue points first, because AutoCue will preserve already-existing cue points normally. Does anyone else out there use the digitel jukebox, if so do you turn their voices off and use Jaws with it like I do? Thanks for all the good information. JESUS SAVES!!: JESUS IS THE WAY!! [JAWS-Users] pdf to word
Hi, Does anyone know of any programs I can use that will convert pdf to a word document? Hopefully, someone can help. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] pdf to word
I have and do use several programs to accomplish this on a regular basis. First, Open Book will do this; Simply use the Freedom Impport Printer which sends the document to Open Book. I generally use the Exact View, which preserves layout and imagery. Then you can use the Launchables menu to export the file to word. The latest version of Adobe adds export functionality as well, whenever I am in a Word file, in the file menu, there is an option to Export file to...offering both .docx and TXT file types. Finally, I have used Nuance OmniPage. It is expensive, and the interface isn't accessible, but the functions it inserts into the context and file menus allow you to convert any file type to almost any other file type, again preserving imagery and layout. I hope at least one of these options helps you. Re: [JAWS-Users] pdf to word
Hi Kimsan; What I do is with the PDF file open, go to the file menu with Alt + F, arrow down to save as text , press enter, then I copy the .txt file, and paste it into a Word document. Hope this helps. Take care and get going on your vacation! Have a great time. Re: [JAWS-Users] Flash and Adobe Reader
Hi. I use them frequently, and while as you probably know, Flash is notoriously difficult, they keep improving, albeit minutely, but stillBoth of those updates are easy, and make Adobe even better. I suggest you update them, and happy studying.
