Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Silverlight
Ted, yours is the first email I have seen regarding Silverlight with JAWS. I was able to work with JAWS 15 and Silverlight with Windows XP, but haven't been able to get it to work with Windows 7 and JAWS 15. My application is streaming talkshows from websites. One of the websites I would like to stream from is www.iowacatholicradio.com. I have installed the current version of Silverlight, but JAWS says it isn't there. Is it a matter of having a sighted person install it, or will Silverlight never work in this situation? Thanks! I can now give you a preliminary report on that project-at long last it works. The app itself is a bit overdesigned, and the JAWS cursor doesn't work at present (we hope we can resolve that), but navigation and data entry are now possible. The accompanying log file, on the other hand, is not ready for prime time, suggesting that these and similar apps may have to be tweaked on an individual basis. Presently, buttons and links are inoperative, but the JAWS cursor is partially enabled. I know there are one or two others out there working with this interface, and any feedback would be welcome. So FS's recent Web comments on Silverlight have merit. They further deserve credit for the extraordinary level of personal service required to research and resolve this problem thus far, even sending a programmer on-sight to see the problem first-hand. Hello David, Thank you very much, the directions below were clear and with your additional information about the pre-Windows lack of speech, I proceeded with success! It took perhaps 15 minutes, then the computer did a normal boot and JAWS came up. Very exciting for something to work as advertised. Note: this may take quite some time to perform, during which you will not have speech as your system is in a pre-windows state. When it finishes the system will restart on its own normally, so just turn up your speakers in case you are in another part of the house when that happens. I've known it to take over an hour at the very least if not longer. So do it when you won't need your system for a while. Open Computer or in Windows 8.1, it is called This PC or File Explorer. 2. Highlight the disc in question, probably your C: drive. 3. Open the Context Menu by pressing the APP key between the Control and Windows logo keys on the right hand side of the space bar. If your keyboard does not have an Applications key, the menu can be opened by pressing Shift + F10. 4. Up arrow one time to Properties, and press enter. 5. You will open onto the General tab. Tab down once or twice until you find the Disc Clean Up button, and open this by pressing the Space Bar or enter. 6. Simply follow the instructions to run the Disc Clean Up utility on your drive. This will clean up any unnecessary stuff on your drive. 7. When the Disc Clean Up finishes, close it, and then hold down the Control key and press the Tab key. This will take you to the Tools Tab. 8. Tab down once, and you will find the Error Checking Utility, and press enter on this to start the scan of your drive for any errors. 9. When finished with the Error Check Scan, tab down again to the Optimize and Defrag utility, and press enter to start this process. 10. Once inside the Optimize and Defrag utility, you will see that there is a list of drives to choose from, so arrow down to find the drive in question and stop on it. 11. After selecting your drive, notice what it says about the state of the drive, it will say that it has never been run, that is badly fragmented and neeeds optimizing, or that it is OK. It may say something else, but it is self explanatory. 12. If your drive needs optimizing, after tabbing once more, you will see the Analyze button, which you will need to press enter on. This will find the degree to which the drive is fragmented, and it should then comback and say that it is OK or that it needs optimizing. 13. If it needs optimizing, then by tabbing down one last time, you will find the optimize button, and press enter on it to optimize the drive. Once this finishes, you will get a report on the state of the drive after defragmenting is complete. 14. Now simply tab down to the close button and this will exit you out of This PC completely. Note: If a drive has any bad sectors on it, it cannot be totally defragmented to the 0 point. If this happens, and there are only a small number of bad sectors, then the drive should still perform well enough to run the computer. However, once the drive gets too many bad sectors, then it will be necessary to replace the drive. This is rare, but it does happen. In the last 10 years, I have replaced two drives in two different computers. I hope this helps you to get your disc back into the shape that you want it in, and if I can be of help again, just send me a message. Re: [JAWS-Users] using wordpad
My recommended solution is to use the paste special feature in Word, then copy the results to where you need it next, e.g. to the body of an email. One of the paste-special options is to paste only the text. This eliminates a whole host of junk, everything you are experiencing, as well as differing fonts, format commands, etc. In short, this gives you the cleanest possible result. The steps: 1. Copy the material to the clipboard in the usual fashion. 2. Bring up Word. 3. Press the applications key or shift plus f10. In that list, arrow to paste options, but do not press the enter key yet Instead, use the left and right arrows to find the text only option, then press enter. 3. After a few seconds, the results will be pasted into your Word document. From there, you can copy and paste in the usual way; no need to repeat the paste options steps above. This text-only feature can solve a myriad of JAWS navigation problems, so if you are having problems navigating a given bit of material, perform the above steps and paste the results into a separate Word document, or if you do not need to retain the original version, do a cut and paste into that original document. Painfully re-do my default configuration and speech settings so I don't need to listen to JAWS in the Valium mode. 4. One at a time, with the most-often-used-applications, copy back the user setting files and determine if any of them cause the problems originally observed. 5. Others responded that they too had been dealing with this problem. In my case, it started with Jaws 16 and really picked up with the latest JFW release. Anyway, I wrote FS tech support about this problem and was instructed to do the standard run Jaws in default mode. I did this and for the short period of time I was able to do so, the issue seemed not to be present. Running jaws in default mode isn't' exactly a pleasant experience and as I use this machine for my business, I couldn't really keep the computer running under these conditions for a long period of time to really see if the problem had truly gone away. Anyway, I wrote FS about my experience and I was suggested to delete all user settings. Please see below: In this case, I recommend deleting your user settings and manually make all settings again. This can be done by going to: Start/all programs/JAWS 16.0/explore JAWS/explore my settings Once here, perform the control+a command to select all files and press the delete key. You will be asked if you are sure you want to delete these files, tab to yes and hit enter. Now, I'm not saying that this isn't the proper means to deal with this bug,but I don't know if I want to go this rout. This isn't the first time I've been instructed to deal with an irksome Jaws issue is this way, but it sure feels rather extreme and all-encompassing. I was wondering if others were presented with the same solution and if they went through with it and more importantly, did it actually work. I know I can simply back up the files to another folder before going through with this step and replace them if this solution doesn't work, but I do find it odd that 1, FS wouldnt' mention this step in their instructions and 2, I don't want to start messing around with settings this and that and possibly create more issues. Especially on this machine. Any feedback would be appreciated. [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Silverlight
FS, my department, and one of our software contractors have been involved since last summer on trying to get JFW to work with a Silverlight-based app, which maintains eligibility data for our cabinet. Re: [JAWS-Users] having trouble using Jaws to change folder to lookin so as to attach a file
Jason, If you are in the Tree View when browsing, and you utilize the left and right arrows to open and close the different folders, this will work fine until you reach the folder which contains the file which you are trying to locate, i.e. the documents folder. When you reach the documents folder, and it says closed, do not press the right arrow key to open it, simply press the tab key. This will also open the folder and will reveal all of the files and folders within it, not just a select few. I could not really tell, but I hope this ansers the question that you are asking. I am not sure which version of Windows you have, but in Windows 7, from the Attach File window, you are first left in the file name field. Hitting Shift tab twice puts you into the list of files in your last used directory. I believe this is your Pictures folder. Hitting Shift tab twice more should have you hearing Tree. From the Tree view you can up or down arrow, or use the first letter of the desired foler. JAWS should also announce the level of the folder. The default folder name is typically documents when you are saving from most programs, but could easily have been modified along the way. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading the close window icon
Patti, As far as I know, the JAWS reveal cursor is just the JAWS cursor, found by pressing the - key on the number key pad with the num lock turned off. I have never found the close icon in this manner, and to get Avast to close, you can simply restart your computer. You may have to disable Avast in the start up items list to prevent it from starting automatically when your computer boots up. If you need instruction on this, let me know. Otherwise, just call Microsoft Accessibility Support and let them remove the program for you. Then get yourself a good antivirus program. If you want free, AVG is better than Avast, and you can run it with Malware Bytes free version for even better protection. For example, I am currently using Jaws 16 on a Windows7 home premium on a desktop computer. Starting with Jaws15, I have noticed that Jaws will no longer speak to me the close icon at the top of any programs or windows. I have confirmed with family members that the icon is in fact showing. I have spoken to my local Freedom Scientific distributor. But they just said. If it is there, than Jaws will read it. But like I said, family members confirm that they can see it and click on it. I do realize, that I can use the alt F4 command to close a program or window. But I find that alt F4 does not always close properly. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading the close window icon
Hi Jason, Here is a tutorial that explains using the Windows Classic theme Windows Basic theme for Windows7: While helping Barb learn a bit more about the icons at the top right hand corner of most application Windows (Minimize Restore Close), another issue came up. Gene stated he did not have any such icons at the top right hand corner of his windows. I asked Gene if he had ever changed the desktop theme on his Windows7 computer. He stated he had not. I now feel pretty confident I have solved the mystery of the missing icons. (Smile). For any new Windows7 computer users, I strongly, strongly suggest you consider changing your desktop theme from the default to the Windows Classic. By making this change, application windows will begin to feel very much like the older Windows XP windows. I have made this modification as well as other seasoned Windows7 users problem free. No need to worry as this change is not permanent, and you can return back to the Windows7 theme if you feel compelled to do so. When testing my theory I went from Windows Classic, to the default Windows 7 desktop theme, and back to the desktop classic theme hassle free. To determine if you are using the Windows 7 theme simply launch Notepad and Wordpad. Use the Jaws hotkey to read the top of the window (Insert + Numpad 1 (End key). If you do not hear Minimize, Restore, Close or any variation of, it is very likely you too are using the Windows7 Desktop theme. I have typed up the following information to give you and idea of how the Windows Classic desktop theme can be of some benefit to you. The new Windows7 theme is a combination of pictures, colors, and sounds on your computer. It includes a desktop background, a screen saver, a window border color, and a sound scheme. Some Windows7 customized themes can include their own desktop icons and mouse pointers. A drawback of these themes to vision impaired and blind computer users is that these visually stimulating themes take up resources and do not add the same benefits as they would to sighted Windows7 users. The following tutorial will help you make changes that allow for Windows7 to take on the appearance and sounds of the familiar Windows XP classic theme. As an added benefit, these changes will also take the desktop out of the Alt + Tab sequence. We will need to go to the Personalization Dialogue box to make our change from the default Windows7 theme to the classic Windows theme. A little warning is in order. The tutorial below may make changes to your current Windows sound scheme. If you would like to continue using your current sound scheme with all its familiar sounds, make sure to save it or at the very least make a note of its name so you can restore it after the modifications below are made. Here's how to identify your current sound scheme and how to restore it in the event of any mishaps. *Identifying Your Current Sound Scheme 1. Go to the Start menu search box and enter the following: Change system sounds. 2. You will land on the sound scheme you are currently using. Make a note of this particular sound scheme. *Restoring a Sound Scheme 1. If your sound scheme is changed by the steps in the tutorial below, go to the Start menu search box and enter the following: Change system sounds. 2. You will land on a combo box consisting of all of the sound schemes on your computer. 3. Arrow up or down to select your previous sound scheme. 4. This step is very important. Press Shift + Tab twice or until you get to Apply and hit enter. 5. Press Shift + tab to Ok and hit enter. 6. Go back and repeat steps 1 and 2 to verify your sound scheme is indeed the currently running sound scheme. *To Configure the Windows Classic Theme 1. Press the windows key to open the Start menu search box, type the following words and hit enter: Change the theme. Note: you can also simply type the word Theme. 2. You will land directly on the Personalization dialogue box's Theme Gallery. 3. Press down arrow until you get to an item called Windows7 Basic. Right arrow to Windows Classic. Hit the enter key to execute the desired change. 4. Wait a few seconds or until you hear an audio sound effect confirming the completion of this process. I would wait another 2 minutes or so as your computer is making lots of changes and you want to allow lots of time for the process to complete. 5. To confirm the changes have been made correctly repeat steps 1 and 2. When you land on the Theme Gallery make sure it is indeed set to Windows Classic. 6. If you're using the one from the search on the start screen, it is the modern one. There are a couple of settings changes you can make to ensure you are using the desktop version. What will happen is the system goes and checks your drive for errors. Note: this may take quite some time to perform, during which you will not have speech as your system is in a pre-windows state. When it finishes the system will restart on its own normally, so just turn up your speakers in case you are in another part of the house when that happens. Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast Issues
Lynn, The best way you are going to accomplish this is to restart your computer. Then, go immediately to Computer, then open your C drive and navigate to Program Files (X86)/Avast and find the uninstall file. Run this to uninstal the program from your computer. Do not use Programs and Features in the Control Panel, it will only remove portions of the program, making it even harder to get rid of. If the uninstall file does not remove the program, you will then need to go to the Avast web site, and download their removal tool, and try running it to do the job. It is possible that even this will not work, in which case, I recommend calling Microsoft Accessibility Support at 800-936-5900 to get one of the support agents to remove the program from your computer. Re: [JAWS-Users] having trouble using Jaws to change folder to look in so as to attach a file
Sounds like you need to switch folders to a higher level to find your Resume file, which can be done from the Tree view. So I like to be able to route Jaws to the PC cursor and then left click on the close icon. Has anybody else experienced this?
