[JAWS-Users] Unofficial J2018 update, Build, 1712.54, Direct Download Links + What's New
Hi All, I learned about this update from another list, & it's all explained below. Reading issues have been reported when using JAWS 2018.1712.10 (released in December 2017) with Windows 10 Universal apps. Here are some examples: list of 2 items 1. In Windows Mail, JAWS 2018 will not speak the body of an email while navigating by character or word. And JAWS may read a previously opened email instead of the current one. 2. In Sticky Notes, JAWS 2018 repeats the character in focus and will not speak the text while navigating by character or word. list end Solution These problems have been fixed and will be included in the next JAWS 2018 update. But if you need these fixes before the public release, you have 2 options for receiving a pre-release update as follows: list of 2 items A. Download the full version update from the appropriate link below. It is OK to install over the existing version, or it can be done as a new install by itself. 32 Bit: http://jaws2018.vfo.digital/171254AT7754/J2018.1712.54enu-x86.exe 64 Bit: http://jaws2018.vfo.digital/171254AT7754/J2018.1712.54enu-x64.exe Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Why does JAWS say "clickable" when it isn't?
It is in your settings centre. Once in there, go to Speech and Sounds Schemes, pressing right arrow to open it. Arrow down to modify schemes... and press the spacebar. In the resulting dialog box, tab to the edit sound scheme button and press the spacebar. In the resulting dialog box, control+tab to the HTML tab and it'll be the fourteenth item in the list, and it's labelled as "onclick" and should be spoken as "clickable". I have changed it to say simply click instead of the clickable so it doesn't interfere with my webpage reading very much. I've also changed the "on mouse over" links to just say mouse instead of the mouse over. Yes Jim, they sure do. Well, this has been a thing since at least 2016. I found the archived thread about this, probably from this list. I have turned off the "indicate element attributes" checkbox and this has done the trick. But this isn't an entirely satisfying solution, since now I'll be missing some potentially useful information as well. The little help message informs me that you can turn on and off individual attribute announcements using speech and sound schemes. This I know. However, "clickable" is simply not to be found anywhere in that list. So if they could just add it to the schemes page -- then we could turn it on and off at will. Hi JM, find and expand, speech and sounds schemes. down arrow to and activate modify schemes. Tab to, Edit scheme, & press the spacebar. control+tab to html tab. tab and down arrow to on click speak. tab and down arrow to ignore. tab to and activate ok. First, with JAWS, some webpages act as if they load twice. I will click on a link and JAWS will start speaking the next page. I assume all is well and start navigating, typing, etc. However, it turns out JAWS hasn't processed the page yet, and so after a pause (which I don't always catch), JAWS resumes speaking from the top again. This is especially true with webpages that have lots of links and other controls. When I know from experience that I'm about to go to such a page, I wait until JAWS starts speaking a second time. Only then do I go to work on it. Second, I wonder how you're handling forms mode. If I remember correctly, the JAWS default is "auto." This means that when a page opens, JAWS seeks out an edit field and puts you in it. I've long since given up on that setting. Instead, I have it set to manual. Go into JAWS quick settings with insert-v, then arrow down to "Autoforms." Press spacebar until JAWS says "manual" and tab to okay to confirm. This will give you the choice of whether or not to go into an edit field. In this case, you would press e (the quick navigation key for "edit field") and once there, press enter to enable you to enter your username, password, etc. Note that once in forms mode, you can tab from field to field without leaving forms mode. I found that in auto forms mode, JAWS would act unpredictably. With JAWS, it's crucial to have maximum user control. Re: [JAWS-Users] Page Refreshing Kicking Me out of Typing Field
A few thoughts. [JAWS-Users] Page Refreshing Kicking Me out of Typing Field
Hi. New to the list, to Jaws and to computers. How do you stop a page from refreshing when you are typing/ I'm on afew forums and All of them seem to auto refresh! I have done the insert, typed "refresh" selected "off' and then hit ok. I have also shut down and restarted the computer afew ties since then. It still says the refresh feature is off. But everytime I start typing, it either jumps lines, causing some really funky posts which I then have to clean up, or kicks me out of the type field completely. Did I miss a step? Is iththe sites themselves? FS didn't have any further advice toher than what I just did when I called them. Very frustrating. Thank you so much. About ten years ago, a new concept was invented. It was called Web 2.0. It isn't a new "version" of the web, but rather a new approach to what the web is and what it can do. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the web was simply a portal for reading and editing basic information, but around 2008 or so, this began tochange with the advent of Facebook, Twitter and more comprehensive websites. People started using the web for everything from banking to advanced document creation to even viewing and manipulating the files on other devices. To keep up with this, The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA). Many web developers saw the need to use nonstandard controls on their websites. For example, rather than having a button that advanced a user to a completely different page to see information, they wanted to have controls that expanded and collapsed different parts of a page. To let screen reader users know exactly what they were seeing, ARIA can be used to tell the screen reader and the blind user something like, "Hey. This is a nonstandard control. Just think of it as a button and you'll be okay. And by the way, right now, it's open, so there's more information to see on this page." Web developers can use ARIA to give sections of their pages custom region names. As an example, go to the Training Downloads Page of the Freedom Scientific website. A few years after ARIA came along, HTML5 (the latest version of the markup language used to code websites) was released. This gave web developers a lot of new semantic tools to play with because it was hoped that they would use to identify different parts of their pages so that one day, when AI would be advanced enough to read and comprehend webpages themselves, they would be able to more easily analyse websites using these semantic tags. Have you ever heard JAWS say something like "article" or "content information"? There are also tags for naming regions. These are some of the new tags in HTML5, but be aware that sometimes JAWS does not speak the correct name for the tag, which is one reason why JAWS is only somewhat standards-compliant. In JAWS 2018, you have the ability to customize what tags JAWS speaks aloud. To see this, go to Settings Center > Web/HTML/PDF > Reading >
