[JAWS-Users] Unofficial J2018 update, Build, 1712.54, Direct Download Links + What's New

2018-01-10 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

I learned about this update from another list, & it's all explained below.

Reading issues have been reported when using JAWS 2018.1712.10 (released in
December 2017) with Windows 10 Universal apps. Here are some examples:

list of 2 items
1. In Windows Mail, JAWS 2018 will not speak the body of an email while
navigating by character or word. And JAWS may read a previously opened
email
instead of the current one.
2. In Sticky Notes, JAWS 2018 repeats the character in focus and will not
speak the text while navigating by character or word.
list end

Solution

These problems have been fixed and will be included in the next JAWS 2018
update. But if you need these fixes before the public release, you have 2
options
for receiving a pre-release update as follows:

list of 2 items
A. Download the full version update from the appropriate link below. It is
OK to install over the existing version, or it can be done as a new install
by itself.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Why does JAWS say "clickable" when it isn't?

2018-01-10 Thread Scorpio

It is in your settings centre.

Once in there, go to Speech and Sounds Schemes, pressing right arrow to open
it.

Arrow down to modify schemes... and press the spacebar.

In the resulting dialog box, tab to the edit sound scheme button and press
the spacebar.

In the resulting dialog box, control+tab to the HTML tab and it'll be the
fourteenth item in the list, and it's labelled as "onclick" and should be
spoken as "clickable".

I have changed it to say simply click instead of the clickable so it doesn't
interfere with my webpage reading very much.

I've also changed the "on mouse over" links to just say mouse instead of the
mouse over.

Yes Jim, they sure do.

Well, this has been a thing since at least 2016. I found the archived thread
about this, probably from this list.

I have turned off the "indicate element attributes" checkbox and this has
done the trick. But this isn't an entirely satisfying solution, since now
I'll be missing some potentially useful information as well. The little help
message informs me that you can turn on and off individual attribute
announcements using speech and sound schemes. This I know. However,
"clickable" is simply not to be found anywhere in that list. So if they
could just add it to the schemes page -- then we could turn it on and off at
will. Seems very uncomplicated to me ... or am I missing something?

I recall a response from FS that the "clickable" ghost issue is a known item

switched to Firefox as my default browser about 6 months ago when IE
insisted on opening pdf's in the browser, the everpresent clickable sound

But yes, I was just wondering about this. I understand that there
often *is* "clickable" text on a webpage, and JAWS is trying to inform me
of this fact.

But on many pages, every line will say "clickable", even though there
is nothing to click/nothing happens when you click. Why is this? And
can I get a happy medium somewhere? Obviously I don't want to miss
important information about a page, but when I'm reading a wikipedia
article or IMDB review or something and hear "clickable, clickable,
clickable", on what appears to be static text - that just seems like
weird, excessive noise.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Why does JAWS say "clickable" when it isn't?

2018-01-10 Thread Mike B.
Hi JM,

find and expand, speech and sounds schemes.
down arrow to and activate modify schemes.
Tab to, Edit scheme, & press the spacebar.
control+tab to html tab.
tab and down arrow to on click speak.
tab and down arrow to ignore.
tab to and activate ok.
Now you have to save this modified scheme. This will get you started, & you
will get it all figured out once you're in there.

Agree. The very few times where there's an element that can be clicked

Yes, I know I can disable it, but having JAWS detect these elements is

A quick search on the web reveals that it has something to do with
Quicktime, which is an Apple video format. I guess your newspaper wants to
display multimedia content. Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong...

Hi!
If you press tab, there is a choice to accept the web site and have it come up
in Chrome. It is usually called: Allow. Just press enter on Allow, and the web
site will come up in Chrome!
I have had some web sites say that as well.
That is all you do.

Disable the detect elements setting in your Jaws settings. Going off of

sorry for bringing it up again.

But yes, I was just wondering about this. I understand that there often *is*
"clickable" text on a webpage, and JAWS is trying to inform me of this fact.
But on many pages, every line will say "clickable", even though there is
nothing to click/nothing happens when you click. Why is this? And can I get
a happy medium somewhere? Obviously I don't want to miss important
information about a page, but when I'm reading a wikipedia article or IMDB

Wow that helps a lot. I've had the loading twice thing, too. And yes, it'll

unpredictable. I'll change that setting and see if that helps! Thanks! Very

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Page Refreshing Kicking Me out of Typing Field

A few thoughts.

First, with JAWS, some webpages act as if they load twice. I will click on a
link and JAWS will start speaking the next page. I assume all is well and start
navigating, typing, etc. However, it turns out JAWS hasn't processed the page
yet, and so after a pause (which I don't always catch), JAWS resumes speaking
from the top again. This is especially true with webpages that have lots of
links and other controls.
When I know from experience that I'm about to go to such a page, I wait until
JAWS starts speaking a second time. Only then do I go to work on it.

Second, I wonder how you're handling forms mode. If I remember correctly, the
JAWS default is "auto." This means that when a page opens, JAWS seeks out an
edit field and puts you in it. I've long since given up on that setting.
Instead, I have it set to manual.
Go into JAWS quick settings with insert-v, then arrow down to "Autoforms."
Press spacebar until JAWS says "manual" and tab to okay to confirm.
This will give you the choice of whether or not to go into an edit field. In
this case, you would press e (the quick navigation key for "edit field") and
once there, press enter to enable you to enter your username, password, etc.
Note that once in forms mode, you can tab from field to field without leaving
forms mode.
I found that in auto forms mode, JAWS would act unpredictably. With JAWS, it's
crucial to have maximum user control.

I hope this is both clear and relevant.

Hi. New to the list, to Jaws and to computers. How do you stop a page from
refreshing when you are typing/ I'm on afew forums and All of them seem to auto
refresh! I have done the insert, typed "refresh" selected "off' and then hit
ok. I have also shut down and restarted the computer afew ties since then. It
still says the refresh feature is off. But everytime I start typing, it either
jumps lines, causing some really funky posts which I then have to clean up, or
kicks me out of the type field completely. Did I miss a step? Is iththe sites
themselves? FS didn't have any further advice toher than what I just did when I
called them. Very frustrating. Thank you so much.

remember that the convenient OCR keystrokes are:

Insert+Spacebar
Release to hear a click sound
Press the letter O
release
Press the letter D
release
You should hear a response that it is working

I recall that this was available in JAWS 17 or later.

That's not working. It still continues to say empty document and no other

The particular pdf does contain images and print. Would that make a
difference?

Hi Vicki,

After opening the "empty" pdf, hit JAWSKey+spacebar followed by "od"
(without the quotes).
This invokes the OCR document scan. It will take a bit of time for the
scan, depending on the size of your document.
The result is then displayed in the virtual viewer.
If you wanted to, once the scan is complete, you could select all of the
text, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into a text file.

A few thoughts.

First, with JAWS, some webpages act as if they load twice. I will click on a
link and JAWS will start speaking the next page. I assume all is well and
start navigating, typing, etc. However, it turns out JAWS hasn't processed
the page yet, and so after a pause (which I don't always catch), JAWS
resumes speaking from the top again. This is especially true with webpages
that have lots of links and other controls.
When I know from experience that I'm about to go to such a page, I wait
until JAWS starts speaking a second time. Only then do I go to work on it.

Second, I wonder how you're handling forms mode. If I remember correctly,
the JAWS default is "auto." This means that when a page opens, JAWS seeks
out an edit field and puts you in it. I've long since given up on that
setting.
Note that once in forms mode, you can tab from field to field without
leaving forms mode.
I found that in auto forms mode, JAWS would act unpredictably. With JAWS,
it's crucial to have maximum user control.

I hope this is both clear and relevant.

through background noise sometimes and the audio captshas are designed to
be, well, noisy.

Your solution is one I kind of like, but I don't think a lot of people in

repeated until I have the solution entered in Word. Then I copy and paste
the results into the field and most of the time, I get it correct on one or
two tries. The structure of the audio CAPTCHs is such that you have to click
to start the audio and then jump into the solution field and type. This
makes me hurry and I too often goof. Just be sure that when you go back to
activate the repeat button that you don't press "get a new challenge."

I still think that we could come up with a better CAPTCH structure. How
about audio that said, "Enter the first name of the famous man shot by John

Consider enabling the JAWS braille viewer. Note that you do not need to have
a braille display for this to work, but if you do have a braille display,
both can be used together.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Any tips on screen-sharing with sighted users?

Hi folks. I need to be doing this soon, while using a web application. By
default, JAWS does not even show the position of the virtual cursor, which
means a sighted person would have a hard time following my
navigation/reading/etc. However, I found the option in settings to highlight
the virtual cursor, which I think should help. Is there anything else anyone
feels I should be aware of? I explained that the virtual buffer reformats
pages in non-screen layout already.

Thanks.

2018-01-10 Thread JM Casey
Yeah, that works, and I've tried this, too. I have difficulty hearing
through background noise sometimes and the audio captshas are designed to
be, well, noisy.

Your solution is one I kind of like, but I don't think a lot of people in
the world would know the answer to that question. It's surprisingly hard to
come up with universal trivia.

My audio solution has become this. Open a word document and then listen to
the audio and type what I hear. Being a tiny bit older than some on the
list, I just try for 3 or 4 numbers or letters at a time. Then I have it
repeated until I have the solution entered in Word.

Wilks Boot."

[JAWS-Users] Page Refreshing Kicking Me out of Typing Field

2018-01-10 Thread Fuzzmom
Hi. New to the list, to Jaws and to computers. How do you stop a page from
refreshing when you are typing/ I'm on afew forums and All of them seem to
auto refresh! I have done the insert, typed "refresh" selected "off' and
then hit ok. I have also shut down and restarted the computer afew ties
since then. It still says the refresh feature is off. But everytime I start
typing, it either jumps lines, causing some really funky posts which I then
have to clean up, or kicks me out of the type field completely. Did I miss
a step? Is iththe sites themselves? FS didn't have any further advice toher
than what I just did when I called them. Very frustrating. Thank you so
much.

That seems a bit vague, even to me. Do you bring up the file list in the
"Open" dialog of Notepad? If so, you also need to change the file type to
"all files" to see any PDF document.

I'm thinking that your idea is based on JAWS 2018 with the capability to
recognize a PDF file directly from a file list in Windows Explorer, and not
opening it. If so, then Notepad has nothing to do with the process -- the
virtual viewer will come up without having Notepad open.

I'm not sure the requester has said what version of JAWS is being used.

Also the context menu that pops up does not say "OCR" it instead says
"Recognize with JAWS".

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading empty PDF document with JAWS 2018

2018-01-10 Thread net bat66

easy.
open note pad then go to your files. but don't open them.
open a context menu on them and use the ocr option and wait a few seconds for
it to process the text.
do not press the escape key or it will close. then you can view the text of
the pdf file.
the acuracy of the text depends on how much video errors there are in the
scanned image.

JAWS refers to elements with ARIA landmark roles as "regions". I haven't tested
this, but I strongly suspect that some HTML5 elements are treated as regions
also, for example, the element, and the element.

In addition to information given by Roger, you can find useful to see the JAWS
Support for ARIA document, by Freedom Scientific, which explains not only
compatibility level between JAWS and different browsers with specific ARIA
tags, but also aspects in which for some reason JAWS deviates formally from the
standards. You can find this document in Word format here:

Hope it helps!

Thank you very much, Roger. No need to apologise; this was exactly the sort of
thing I needed to read. Thanks for the page reference as well; I will show it
to my contact and maybe she can pass it along to the developer. I understand
the concept of web 2.0 and HTML 5; it was just good to get all this stuff
clarified a bit, especially in the case of "aria". So thanks again.

OK, this is going to be a bit of a rant, but please read it all because you
will hopefully find it interesting and important.

About ten years ago, a new concept was invented. It was called Web 2.0. It
isn't a new "version" of the web, but rather a new approach to what the web is
and what it can do. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the web was simply a portal
for reading and editing basic information, but around 2008 or so, this began
tochange with the advent of Facebook, Twitter and more comprehensive websites.
People started using the web for everything from banking to advanced document
creation to even viewing and manipulating the files on other devices.

To keep up with this, The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created Accessible
Rich Internet Applications (ARIA). Many web developers saw the need to use
nonstandard controls on their websites. For example, rather than having a
button that advanced a user to a completely different page to see information,
they wanted to have controls that expanded and collapsed different parts of a
page. To let screen reader users know exactly what they were seeing, ARIA can
be used to tell the screen reader and the blind user something like, "Hey. This
is a nonstandard control. Just think of it as a button and you'll be okay.
And by the way, right now, it's open, so there's more information to see on
this page." Web developers can use ARIA to give sections of their pages custom
region names. As an example, go to the Training Downloads Page of the Freedom
Scientific website.

A few years after ARIA came along, HTML5 (the latest version of the markup
language used to code websites) was released. This gave web developers a lot of
new semantic tools to play with because it was hoped that they would use to
identify different parts of their pages so that one day, when AI would be
advanced enough to read and comprehend webpages themselves, they would be able
to more easily analyse websites using these semantic tags. Have you ever heard
JAWS say something like "article" or "content information"? There are also tags
for naming regions. These are some of the new tags in HTML5, but be aware that
sometimes JAWS does not speak the correct name for the tag, which is one reason
why JAWS is only somewhat standards-compliant. In JAWS 2018, you have the
ability to customize what tags JAWS speaks aloud. To see this, go to Settings
Center > Web/HTML/PDF > Reading >

Hey randy.

They did not put up the menu in any kind of text format. They only scanned
an image of their print menu. A lot of restaurants do this unfortunately.
Your best bet is to use oCR. I did the JAWS OCR thing on the window and got
reasonable results, though I only glanced at it (I'm very far from San

The text and background is intentionally done as Dave said. It is meant to
make it impossible to be recognized by OCR. I have heard a few audio CAPTCHs
that, without distortion, would say something like "Jim had two cows and a
horse. He sold a cow. How many horses were left? "This example is overly
simplistic, still there are better ways to prove your humanness than the
current tests. As someone with both vision and hearing limitations, I hate
all regular forms of CAPTCHAs.
