They were call blind Tunes by Do It Blind. I have them but didn’t seem to be
working very well with jaws 18 or jaws 2018 either.

Re: [JAWS-Users] missing folder

2018-01-28 Thread Adrian Spratt
Miriam,

I think this will work:

Go to your "documents" folder and press enter.

Listen to what JAWS says. It should say the name of a document and "Not
selected."

If you hear "Selected," press control-spacebar together and, if need be, repeat
until you hear "Not selected" along with that file name.

Press shift-control-n together.

You should hear "Edit" and possibly "New folder."

Type the name you want, "Books." And press enter.

I've just moved to a new location and everything is a bit confused. But I
thought all was well with my computer until I discovered a missing folder.
In Documents, I had a folder called Books. Humanware companion is set to find
books in that folder from BARD and Bookshare, and I can easily open and
transfer books to my NLS player or my stream. But the folder, Books, is gone. I
have Win7 64 bit computer, Jaws 18, and IE 11. Can someone please tell me how
to set up that folder again?

2018-01-28 Thread JM Casey
Sure. I have been using NVDA too. nVDA works great with both new Firefox,
and, I guess, Edge too (though I haven't used that). But I'm not sure that
NVDA vs JAWS topics are welcome on this list. I made a thread when I first
started using NVDA asking about opinions and all was pretty quiet. I guess
that what we have here is some sort of rivalry. Practically, though, it
makes sense to use both screen-readers, if you can.

Not sure what the status is nowadays, but there was someone who wrote
scripts for iTunes. However, as Apple probably keps changing it, the scripts
would become less and less useful unless they were consistently updated with

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 18 and firefox 53 developer tools

2018-01-28 Thread JM Casey
Hey.
That's a really good question. I don't know. I have peeked around with these
tools in Firefox a bit but never really got far. There are maybe a couple of
people on this list who might know more. I'm usually all gung ho about
firefox but I admit this isn't something I know much about.

Hi,

I need to use firefox to edit the html of a webpage on the fly. According
to the firefox support site I should use the page inspector to do this.

My challenge is to add a new option into a combobox. I can locate the
combobox in the html by searching for the word option.

If I right-click on the first option node and select duplicate from the
context menu, I get a new entry in the lis (good so far).

My problem comes in when I want to edit the value of the option. I select
edit as html friom the context menu, and am placed in presumably an edit
field, but I cannot see anything in the edit box. I have explored with the
pc and jaws cursors but can't find the html tags to edit.

Does anyone have any experience with this tool or know how to get it to work
with jaws?

Any help would be appreciated.

Don

Re: [JAWS-Users] error message. Windows media player.

2018-01-28 Thread JM Casey
This is definitely way off topic for this list, so we should probably stop
after this. Basically it's taking control of your phone and becoming the
"superuser". You can delete things that your phone came with which you don't
want around. You can even change the operating system if you want to. When
you root your phone though, you are on your own; good luck getting any kind
of tech support from your provider. However, it's worth doing, if, for
example, you can't get rid of that pesky bloatware Metro PCS or AT put on
your phone, or if you have an SD card and for some reason the apps you have
downloaded refuse to allow themselves to be moved to it. It works with
Android devices, but I don't know if you can do anything equivalent with an
iPhone.

I did not read the whole thread, but it sure made it sound like fixing this
problem was more than it was worth. I would personally just use another
media player, like Winamp, Foobar or VlC. I don't see the point in messing
around with your user account or restore points just to be able to play a
bloody mp3. Still, you don't seem to be alone with this problem, so do some
more investigating online if you feel it's worth the effort. I know that's
not much help. I never liked Windows media Player and don't know why
Microsoft feels the need to connect to its silly network every time you want
to play something.

I would do the jaws dump command and then try to bring it back with the hotkey

JAWS does not work well with new iTunes. When in the store, and you do
search JAWS is unable to read the links. iTunes works well with new NVDA.
Interested that a free program works better than one I spend money. Hope FS

Oh, it's not a conspiracy theory, it's the truth. If you ever root your
mobile phone, you might be dismayed to see the number of things that run in
the background, which are potential backdoors to discover all kinds of
things about you, your habits, your messages, contacts. These aren't spyware
or anything; the phone companies who sell you the phones put them in there.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Clicking on hyperlink in Outlook.

2018-01-28 Thread JM Casey
Hi Judy.

This is not an issue I have with Windows 10. Are you using outlook? If so,
these steps may be helpful:

1. Click Home.

2. In the Delete group, click Junk, and then click Junk Email options.

3. On the Options tab, clear the Disable links and other functionality in
phishing messages (recommended) check box.

I copied that from the web, hence the non-screen-reader-specific
terminology, but you probably get the idea.

Yes. More specifically, .tif stands for "text image". Do you have a scanner?
Your OCR software might make .tif images before rendering them as readable

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-28 Thread JM Casey
JAWS freezing, or just being intolerably slow, has been something that's
been a thorn in my side for many years. I appreciate your optimism and
supportive words, but I also believe that we, as computer users, require the
same speed and flexibility as everyone else. It's an unpleasant experience
when you know something that should take only a matter of a few seconds
takes you five minutes to accomplish just because of your screen-reader. I
personally think that it's much more important to fix these problems than it
is to introduce new features.

That said, I'm relatively happy with JAWS 18 on my Windows 10 machine. At
least I can reload it quickly if it crashes. There's also NVDA, which is, in
some aspects (not all mind you), more robust. So, the situation is
tolerable, just.

I don't want to overwhelm this serious issue with inherently worthless
responses. However, technicians at VFO have told me that the issue is
"under the hood" so to speak. Apparently, the newer versions of Jaws have
been redesigned in such a way that their headroom can be inundated by
software which requires more than normal functionality. In other words, the
more complex the software, the higher degree of probability that Jaws might
freeze or even crash under certain conditions. On the other hand, I have
noticed that with jaws 18, the program will often recover itself without any
prompting. The freezing is annoying but if we can be reassured that Jaws
will recover, it might be something we'll just have to put up with until the
designers find a way to deal with it. Personally, I think that Jaws had
made some amazing progress recently. I have no reason to think that the
designers won't continue to make it a better program.

[JAWS-Users] jaws 2018 and new iTunes

2018-01-28 Thread Holger Fiallo
JAWS does not work well with new iTunes. When in the store, and you do search
JAWS is unable to read the links. iTunes works well with new NVDA. Interested
that a free program works better than one I spend money. Hope FS fix this
problem.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing

2018-01-28 Thread John Justice
I have no reason to think that the
designers won't continue to make it a better program.

you're probably right. I'm still running JAWS 16 with Windows 7, and I have
not experienced any freezing issues with JAWS.

If you have jaws 16 on your machine, run jaws 16 for a while and see if the
problem goes away. I’m betting on it will.
